I remember when your sister, Jean, ('54), used to “borrow” your
beautiful clothes to wear to Col-Hi after you had gone to work.
I also remember your wonderful parents Homer and Eula Pittman,
who were my second set of parents during the early '50s. Was
that over 60 years ago? I want to wish you a very Happy Birthday
(yesterday) which incidentally is my husband Carl’s birthday
also.

We had two weekends of dog shows in Tucson, AZ in November. We
had a wonderful two weekends with Shelby's puppies who are now
19 months old. The first weekend we showed Duke and Princess and
the second weekend we showed Baron and Diva. Our girl, Tonka,
who we sold to a lady in California was here for the shows both
weekends. Below are the accomplishments for the dogs:

Duke, aka "Black Bart"
November 10 he won Winners Dog and Best of Winners. This earned 
him his first major which was worth 4 points. He now has a total 
of 8 points.

Tonka, aka "Buttercup"
November 9 she won Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex. This 
earned her her first major which was worth 5 points. On November
10 she again won Winners Bitch and Best of Opposite Sex. This 
earned her second major which was worth 4 points. The number 
of points earned is based on the number of dogs beaten in the 
competition. This completed the requirement of 2 major wins 
and a total of 15 points and she is now a Champion. Tonka is 
Shelby's first puppy to earn a Championship. November 17, 18 & 
19 Tonka won Best of Opposite Sex all three days. It takes 3 
major wins and 25 points to become a Grand Champion and Tonka 
only needs 3 more points to earn that title.

Princess, aka "Purple"
November 11 & 12 she won Winners Bitch. This earned her two
major wins of 4 points each. My husband, Dave COCHRAN ('61),
was her handler for the show. She now has a total of 8 points.

Baron, aka "Green"
November 19 he won Winners Dog and Best of Winners. This earned
him his first major which was worth 4 points. He now has a total
of 7 points.

Diva, aka "Golden Girl"
November 19 she won Winners Bitch. This was a major win worth 4
points. She now has a total of 4 points. Dave Cochran ('61) was
Diva's handler for the shows.

Re: Cimumum Bare

Even tho yesterday wuzn't a real SS, it was still enough to
remind me to order the Cimumum bare for my partner... we were
talking about "old" stuff the other day and he was surprised I
had listened to the Bare... he said I was the first person he'd
ever met who listened to it... told him he sure hadn't met many
Bombers... We also shared our horror when we learned "Sparky"
was a stupid puppet... I learned when I ordered a picture... 
he learned when he saw Big John and Sparky in a parade on 
Fremont street... what a bummer that musta been... but today I 
wanna be sure and wish another Bomber-babe an HB so HAPPY

Re: Dust

The recent Burns special on the Dust Bowl Brought back memories
of my early days in Richland. I noticed that Burns did
differentiate between Sand and dust. Dust caused those storms 
from the wheat fields which closed roads between Pasco and 
Spokane. On the other hand, the construction town of Hanford
suffered from blown sand. It was built on a huge sand mass.
Termination Winds they were called. "IE DuPont... I don't know
about E but I am leaving."

In August of 1943 we moved in to a "B" house on the East side of
Thayer Drive ("A" street then). Across from us in the summer of
1943 were two farms. One, up on Williams and Thayer, consisted
of a ramshackle house and barn, and was nestled in a grove of
gigantic Cottonwoods. The other, down by Symons, was very tidy,
surrounded by orchards of Italian plums. The farmer never got to
pick them that fall, because the Feds ran him off. (But that is
another story)

Soon after, in a Henry Ford assembly line manner, a covey of
dozers and backhoes descended on the farms and dug basements for
homes from Williams up yonder to the North. Then they went away
for a few months leaving us with piles of sand and empty holes
standing ominously right across the street. Then the winds came
and we had our own sandstorm.

We had a hummer in our house, a loose piece of insulation paper
under the shakes that hummed like a one-note harmonica when
winds reached about thirty MPH. When, after the dozers, it
sounded off, we could expect to be covered in sand. The finest
particles got under our windows and the bigger sands under our
door in neat piles. We could hear it hit the windows in waves. 
If the wind was up when I went to school, I had to run for a 
couple of blocks, to escape the stinging sands on my face and 
hands. I soon learned to cover up, like a burka..

In the spring the boys came back along, redug the holes, and
built the bleeping houses. Peace reigned again, though our
hummer never as loud again. Now you might understand why some 
of the good folks at the school paper changed its name from the
Rocket to the Sandstorm, which still exists, as you can see. I
have a hunch Chalky CONWAY ('45-RIP) had something to do with 
that. Also, when Lola YALE, (wb) editor of our unamed Club 40
newsletter and I thought we should get with it. We figured old =
dust. Viola! Dust Storm. True Story.

I too was disappointed to learn that Sparky was a puppet. The
way I found out was when my parents took me to see them do a
live show at the Walla Walla Armory. However, I did keep on
listening and remember that the show ended with a series about
how everyone they knew seemed to be Martians and they were
trying to figure out what was going on. Well, it never really
ended; the final show had Big Jon and Sparky explaining to the
radio audience that it was just a club where their friends were
just pretending to be Martians and apparently the whole town,
except them, was in on it. Funny, that and the theme song, "The
Teddy Bears' Picnic" are the only things I remember about the
show.

Re: The Monster That Devoured Cleveland

Some six months ago or so you mentioned having car problems as
big as the monster that devoured Cleveland for us Maynard fans.
Maynard G. Krebs  (or is it Crebs?--oh well, in one episode it 
was pointed out that even Maynard didn't know) was the beatnik
sidekick of Dobie Gillis in the TV Show "The Many Loves of Dobie
Gillis" from 1959 until 1963. I enjoyed watching the program and
when CBN broadcast it in the early '80s, my daughter liked it
too. It is now on MeTV in the middle of the night Sat-Sun and I
have been recording it. A few days ago I was watching several I
had recorded and in one episode they all thought Maynard was
leaving. He was standing on the street with his suitcase and
they were trying to talk him into staying. He explained that he
was just going to the movie and they showed the theater in the
background. I'm sure with those 21" TV sets everyone had in
those days, and as it went by so fast, that everyone, or at
least almost everyone missed it. But, since I now have the
latest electronic technology, I backed up and paused my VHS
videotape to see what was on the marquee. It was a triple
feature: "The Monster That Devoured Cleveland," "Bride of the
Monster That Devoured Cleveland," and "Son of the Monster That
Devoured Cleveland." Oh, and what was in the suitcase; it was
full his snacks for the movie. Which makes me wonder how someone
can eat a whole suitcase full of candy bars while watching a
movie and remain as skinny as Maynard.

Re: Sidekicks and characters

In those old TV shows it seems that I always enjoyed watching
the ones that played the "characters" more than the lead actor.
In Dobie I got a kick out of Maynard, and later also Chatsworth
Osborne, Jr. (who recently passed away). In the Disney TV version
of Zorro it was Sergeant Garcia. In "Leave it to Beaver" it was
Eddie Haskell. In "McHale's Navy" almost everyone except Ernest
Borgnine (also recently passed away) played a character, but my
favorite has to be Captain Wally Binghamton. Although I don't
think Gabby Hayes was on any of the Roy Rogers TV shows, he was
in some of their movies, and at least one John Wayne movie. 
If I took the time, I could probably think of more, but my two
favorites have to be Barney Fife of the "Andy Griffith Show" and
"Ed Norton" of "The Honeymooners."

Now you and RIVERS ('65) know how McCOY (all those classes) felt 
when he learned that Charlie McCarthy was a dummy.

In your mention of George "Gabby" Hayes as Roy's sidekick in the
movies and once in a John Wayne flick, you might have forgotten
that Gabby along with Yakima Canutt appeared in almost all of
the early John Wayne 60 minute westerns. They would alternate
between playing the sidekick and the bad guy. Gabby would put on
a fake beard when he did the sidekick.

Re: On a football note:

The Cardinal will play the Badgers in the Rose Bowl and 'Bama
will go up against ND for the BCS title. All other bowl games
almost meaningless except for fans of the teams participating
including Northern Illinois.

And the Seahawks proved themselves to be legit by beating the
Bears in Chicago. No really bad calls by officials in this one.

I couldn't help responding to the subject of dust storms when we
were growing up in Richland. I too was interested in the Burns
special on the Dust Bowl. I remember getting caught in a dust or
sandstorm coming home from Spalding School one afternoon back in
the '50s. Of course, we girls couldn't wear anything but dresses
to school back then, so I just remember we "hit the ground" to
try to protect ourselves as best we could as it pelleted us...
and once I got a scratch in my eye from dust. The doctor came to
the house that evening, as I had about rubbed my eye out, it
irrated me so much. He said the dust or sand was gone, but I had
scratched my eye, and gave me some wonderful magic salve that
took away that irritation, so I could leave it alone to heal..

well, now I won't be writing from the Grand Canyon anymore (at
least for awhile, as I'm home from that great trip, nor will I
be writing from Grandview on the Ohio River, as of yesterday my
husband started preaching at a new church in Hope, IN. It is
between Shelbyville and Columbus, tucked between Highways I-74 
and I-65 on highway 9. It's a historic little town started by 
Moravians in 1830, and we have a historic church that was built 
in 1890 from a kit from the catalogue!!

While we will serve a historic church, the parsonage is almost
brand new, just 3 years old.

I LOVED Big Jon and Sparkie. I can still picture lying down in
front of the big radio console to listen to the program. I saw
them "live" when they performed at the Uptown Theater. I was
shattered to learn that Sparkie was not a real boy. In 1968,
when I was a junior in college, I did a semester in Paris with
other NW students. One morning I was downstairs in the student
lounge talking to a young man from the UW. It turned out that
he, too, had been a fan of the show. This was wonderful; I
hardly ever find a person who has heard of Big Jon and Sparkie.
When I tried to tell this young man that Sparkie was a puppet,
not a real boy, he threw himself on the floor and began
screaming, "No, No, No!" And, I was screaming, "Sparkie is a
puppet!" Apparently, our noise was carrying to the classroom
above us because several people rushed down to find out what was
going on. They were not happy with us.

Yeah, I can understand the same might happen if Charlie McCarthy
was only heard on radio, then seen on TV. I think I first 
saw Charlie and Bergen was on Groucho's "You Bet Your Life."
Although Charlie had been in some earlier movies. I saw "You
Can't Cheat an Honest Man" on TV a long time ago, but didn't
correctly remember the title so jumped at the chance recently to
see "Never Give a Sucker an Even Break." Wrong movie; it did
have W. C. Fields, but no Charlie McCarthy.

I believe we got TV in 1954. I remember when the political
conventions came on (I believe the first time they were
broadcast) and to a 9 year old boy just ruined two weeks of 
TV watching. I did see Elvis on the Ed Sullivan show.

A few years ago someone I worked with gave me a DVD with four of
John Wayne's earlier movies, so when I read your post, I checked
it out. All four had Yakima Canutt and three had Gabby Hayes in
them. I had only watched the first one which was without Gabby,
I'm going to get at it and watch the other three.

going to a meaningless Bowl game, even though they have 5 
losses.

T'was almost Christmas '12 all over the Palouse,
Not a creature was stirring, not even Bill Moos.

COUGAR nation was resting, a few in their beds,
With visions of the Apple Cup still in their heads.

But down in Las Vegas the huskies were abuzz.
They had a meaningless Bowl game, Maaco it t'was.

Now about this same time, Santa Claus was ready
For Christmas deliveries in his sleigh so steady.

On a trial run to Vegas he said, "Sakes alive!
That looks like the huskies, but their losses were five?"

Now Santa wears red, but it's not for the fashion.
His clothes are all crimson 'cause COUGS are his passion.

So when he looked down and saw purple and yellow,
"Down with the wet dawgs!" cried this jolly old fellow.

So the plan he devised you would not have believed.
All his reindeer had eaten, but had not relieved.

Now he circled his sleigh and he steered it in low.
When they were over the dawgs, his reindeer let go.

The sound and debris, yes it made such a clatter.
Sarkisian looked up to see what was the matter.

That nasty stuff did fall on Thompson, on Sankey,
On Feeney, on Trufant, on Jenkins so lanky.

It hit thousands of huskies, surely no fewer,
So it rained from the sky, this yuletide manure.

As Santa Claus flew off on this pre-Christmas day,
Some people who were there heard this jolly man say,

"Merry Christmas to you and to you and to you,
I say down with the huskies, forever WAZZU!".

Now don't get me wrong... I think all Bomber-babes are
special... this one is one of those Col.-Hi flames that
naturally never completely extinguishes... now I've told this
story before and I won't put the B-day babe thru the retelling
of a story I can't say I wear the white hat in... (oh crap... a
preposition... )... we really did have some grand times, but as
usual I was 17 and a guy... in other words I was dumber than
dirt and not always what someone might wanna take home to
Mommy... There were much more socially acceptable young
gentlemen out there and she found one and the entire famblie and
I have got along famously ever since... I love getting together
with the B-day girl and her fambilie whenever we can and it's
always great to see them... but in all honesty, I do gotta say
that John ('64) made a great catch and he was clearly much more
mature and right thinking than I at a younger age... I mean...
if I'da had my way, I might still be stalking the halls at 
Col-Hi as its oldest Sr. So HAPPY BIRTHDAY Janine Elizabeth

Yes... talkin' about the 45. If you know the song on the other
side of "wipe Out" you got the name of the b-day boy, today...
well not his name but a good clue... think "North Shore" Think
beautiful long white hair... well not as long these days, in
fact he wears it shorter each time I see him... I'm afraid I may
never have cool white hair... both my Partners do... One is my
age and the other is 3 years younger and both have been white
for several years... mine gradually gets more salt and pepper
but not white... My dad never did get white hair... he was
getting rid of the last of the black when he died (well not like
he was selling it on eBay or anything) at a pretty ripe, old 
age of 85-88 or so depending upon whether you believed my dad 
or his older sisters... Can't wait to see the b-day boy and his
beeeeeeuteful wife ('63) this weekend in Olympia! Now I don't
wanna give short shrift to the Bomber-babe who shares her
birthday with the b-day guy so HAPPY BIRTHDAY to LaMont DeJONG

Re: HUSKY BOWLING

I will certainly agree with Herr STEIN ('64) re: the lack of
meaning in the bowl game to be played by the Huskies later this
month. On the other hand, with the advent of the BCS system,
aren't all but one of the games meaningless now. It used to be
that the winners of at least three of the bowl games (sometimes
4 or 5) could reasonably argue for the subsequent nine months
about who was really "Number One," thus promoting off-season
interest in the season to come. Alas, no more. As for the rest
of Santa Stein's Christmas parody, it sounds suspiciously like
sour grape manure; even if the Cougs did get lucky in Pullman
this year.

Re: A date which will live....

We gots three strapping young Bomber-dudes havin' they b-days on
the "Date" I've mentioned before that my old Pal, Bo Belinsky
was also born on the date... Bo was 10 years older than I which
means I was only 55 when he passed... actually I was 4 days shy
of 55... he was several days shy of 65... dang... been 11 years
now... we threw one heck of a send off at Dodger Stadium for
him... that park was originally the Angel's park and so we held
the send off in the club house... never seen a room so full...
we took limos from Vegas to L.A... Dean Chance arranged the
thing... every old sports writer and announcer who was still
alive from the '60s was there... Mamie didn't show... guess that
was a good thing... one of the old writers told the story of
their engagement night and the "scoop" she and Bo gave him... he
arrived at the suite to get his scoop and there sat the two of
them butt nekud on the bed with her flashing her new rock...
Dean, Bo's Doc and I had the front row... the Doc's dad had a
new trophy wife who looked like Elke Sommer... she grabbed hold
of my arm and held on to get in the front row... the Doc was
somewhere in the back of the club-house... Parts of the event
were televised live and my partners were watching it in Vegas...
when they saw me with my "date" they bout passed out... one of
them TEVO'd it but I must say I've never watched it... ah those
were the days... we laid Bo almost next to Sonny Liston so
they'd have someone to talk to... I sent one of the B-day guys
an autographed copy of Bo's book "Pitching and wooing" since
they shared the b-day... I hope these guys have a wonderful
special day... I'll be heading for the '63 bash in Oly on these
guys' day so HAPPY BIRTHDAY Ed BORASKY ('59), Jim HOUSE ('63)
and Jerry SPEARS ('64) on your special day, December 7, 2012!!!

last week.  We saw some new faces and heard some new stories,
which is always fun.

Bob CARLSON, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) and his lovely wife Karyl
joined us again. Bob always has good stories to share. Jan
RUCKER Meyer ('55) was with us again with more photos to view.
Jeanie TURNER Anderson ('61) and Gary Anderson (Spouse) enjoyed
their visits. THANKS Jeanie & Gary for bringing the name tags
and taking the photos. Tom HEMPHILL ('62) and Linda Hemphill
(spouse) had some great visits and enjoyed the Beaches lunch.
Doug GUINN ('62) and Linda Guinn (spouse) invited their lovely
daughter Sharon and her husband Duane. It was nice to meet more
of the family. Don FUNDERBERG ('63) shared some old gymnastic
memories with Toby ELLIOTT ('64) and others. Terry WERNER ('65)
shared many stories as well. John ZIMMER ('66) drove down from
Tacoma. Craig KLUCUS ('69) joined us for a while as well.

According to the "Turner Rules/Logic," if the 3-9 Cougs are
better than the 7-5 Huskies since they were the winner in the
competition between the two schools, then the 7-5 Huskies are
also better than the 11-2 Stanford Cardinal for the same reason.
I don't think so... in either instance. "On any given
Saturday... " The biggest travesty in the upcoming bowl season
is Northern Illinois getting into the Orange Bowl against
Florida State. How did THAT happen???

Re: We ain't no cult

We'z a famblie! What a wonderful weekend... Total Bomber alla
way... the dinner and Slumber party at Ellen WEIHERMILLER's
('63) were a total blast... the afternoon Friday was spent
waiting for the gang to arrive... Mary Ann WEILAND ('63) (I need
the recipe for that dip), Ellen, Cecilia BENNETT ('65), Mary Lou
WATKINS ('63), Leo WEBB ('63) and I finished off enough crab and
"White Trash" for an army... then Ellen pulled out some cheese
that was out of this world... I thought seriously of stuffing 
a bunch in my pocket for the plane ride home... Jimbeaux ('63) 
and the ever young and lovely Miss Nancy ('65) arrived with 
some fantastic music and a whole CD of Mr. Knutson's (RIP) past
Christmas cards... I never heard Kent Morrill in finer form...
I coulda listened to that CD all night long... Leo fulfilled a
life long dream that he says will make him the king of Auto Shop
but I'm not allowed to tell what it is... (think "beaver")... 
we received several calls from Rosalie LANSING ('63) and Chuck
(NAB) as they slowly made their way from Richland to Olympia...
they made it on time for dinner but it turns out they had set up
a little chain concession on the pass to help young babes and
little old ladies with chains... I think they made quite a 
profit before they finally decided to join us... Kippy Lou 
BRINKMAN ('62) and Gary (NAB) made it at about the same time and 
some of Ellen's long time Oly friends showed up in time for din
din and a few games... we played a game to determine seating 
at the table and I think Ellen slipped her Oly friend a little
inside info because she guessed her question in three guesses...
took the rest of us about 20... then nobody was happy with
having to sit next to "that" person or "this" person so
everybody switched names... we played a game where we got to
pick items out of a grab bag but could steal someone else's
treasure if we wanted it... Rosalie took my beautiful necklace
and I gotta pair of size 2 diamond studded flip flops... Ellen
grabbed a vibrator and we didn't see her again for most of 
the night... the Dinner and the pecan pie with ice cream were
wonderful... the Spuddies CeCi brought were a hit as well...
enough sugar to last us all a very long time... Gary made some
comments that made us all know the he "gets it" where some NAB's
just don't... I summed up his comments with: Bombers are more
like siblings than friends"... he said that was what he had been
trying to say... but suggested that one of us needs to write 
a book because some day the "Bomber Feeling" may be lost... I
figured I could cheat and sing: "You never close your eyes any
more when I kiss your lips... " didn't quite capture it tho...
Things were going just great till it was time for the Bombers to
put on their Bomber Jammies... I saw a look in the Oly couples
eyes that can only be described as "FEAR"... they left right
after the jammie doffing... not sure why... the next day was the
great red sweater chowder caroling brunch... Leo had the room
set up perfectly but the little DI waitress put the heat on us
to be seated and be seated NOW... As there were about 30 members
of the gold medal class in attendance it would be silly for 
me to try and list them all... I must say that Jim "Pitts"
ARMSTRONG ('63) had on the coolest Wailers hat I've ever seen
and I'm gonna get me one by golly... well a course Lamont's
('63) Santa hat is always a big hit... time enough for a few pix
and then time for every one to go their merry way... gotta say
it was nice to have Rosalie's 6'3" Chuck to take the pix... I
was mildly scolded by ML for forgetting to bring a couple of
items to the brunch... I can only mention one (the bomb)... but
I will say the Leo was awfully surprised to see ML separated
from her beaver (that's OK to say isn't it ML?)... I just hope
that the gold medal class knows how special they are and how
much I appreciate being allowed to participate... 

Lest I forget with all this I must say that there are 4 of my
Bomber Buds having their special day on December 10... so HAPPY
BIRTHDAY Loretta JENSEN ('65), Jeff MICHAEL('65), Larry WERSEN
('65) and Mike BOTU ('65-RIP) on their special day, December 10,
2012... lemme say to Margi MAY ('66) sorry I missed yours on the
9th... we have soooo much history that you are prolly better off
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes Bob, this was a fantastic week for the Redskins and how
about the Seahawks! Yes I wanted to do wheelies on my Goldwing
1800, aka Hogshead's HOG! It was warm enough here to ride
yesterday and I did!!! How blessed can a 77 year old broad be?
Now all I have to do is get serious about taking it easy... 
retirement is GOOD!

BTW RGIII's knee... he cried "like a man..." will be okay, 
MRI revealed no tares just tears!

I just re-read RIVERS' ('65) account of the past weekend's
festivities. As an "elder" Bomber, I have tried to counsel David
about making such outlandish statements in public. But the poor
boy has two strikes against him already (maybe three now that
I've called him a poor boy); first, he is a former Marine 
who's D.I. in boot camp was SGT Carter of Gomer Pyle fame; and.
secondly, he's a lawyer (or purports to be one). Now, I'm not
asking you to cut him some slack, au contraire, stick it to him
then, maybe, he will learn something and hopefully not do it
again. I do think that banishment from further Class of '63
activities might work, but he would probably appeal that to the
commissioner.

Packer fans: congrats, ya finally won a game on your own.

Happy Birthday, I always remember that your birthday is on Pearl
Harbor Day, well I remember wrong, but at least I do remember.
Hope it is Happy!! 

We are almost all moved to the Methodist church in Hope, IN.
(just one more trip to pick up a few things, so the pressure is
off, as one parsonage is cleaned and moved out of)... now to
take a little time to get moved into the new one, literally, as
the parsonage was built in 2009. We've had 2 nice Advent
services, so looking forward to getting to know and work in this
great little community.

Glad to learn you are moving in, Rosalie... how neat that you
did make it back to Richland, & the great state of Washington!!
I'll have to be content with visits for years, as my one and
only grandson lives in Nevada, so all my visiting will be

concentrate our efforts on what is really important in life, and

While I regretted being unable to participate except vicariously
through my sister Cecilia ('65) (nice recap, Nevertowed, though 
ML & e may take exception and bar you from the big kids' table 
for a time).

I didn't even notice that I was missing anything because my wife
and I spent Friday evening at the National Ground Intelligence
Center (NGIC) Holiday Ball. While not nearly as impressive
acronymically, it was a festive event in its own right (write,
rite), held at the Boar's Head Inn Pavilion in Charlottesville,
VA - and the band was great. If you've ever seen the "missing
soldier" part of such ceremonies (or "absent sailor" from my
prior attendance at Naval Reserve dining in functions), that's
worth the price of admission by itself.

I am with my Sweetness, Barneata, during the Ball, my first
activity as a retired Department of Army Civilian, 6 days into
my "leisure years." That's right, they let me go (though my
Division Chief did say something about "stop loss" on all Arabic
linguists about a month ago - I doubt they can do that to
civilians). They're even replacing me with a Chinese translator,
leaving the command with only one Arabic translator, because
Chinese translation requirements are more voluminous at the
moment. They know how to find me, however.

I confessed my inability to read my own writing to Maren ('63
&'64) a while back... also my inability to transcribe names and
dates from my cheat sheet to my yellow stickies... It became
again glaringly apparent this morning when I saw I missed Uncle
Burt's ('59) b-day on the 12th. I am certainly glad I re-checked
my yellow stickie a few minutes ago because I had this b-day
Bomber-babe's b-day in my mind as the 14th... I woulda felt just
awful to be a day late on this one... Only known this babe since
the 6th grade but it seems there was never a time I didn't know
her. That means I've only known her brother ('68) since he was
in third grade... Oh my! She is a total doll and has only
changed in hair color from the day I met her, tho I must say
from a picture she posted on my face book she has clearly
undergone some changes in the in-between time... Hair style
mostly I guess... tho not much otherwise. She is a dear friend
and I can always recognize her from a distance but I will
refrain from explaining how as I am doing my very best to be a
good boy... something I guess which has been lacking from my
character in the past... but I know she knows and I guess that's

And I'm tellin' ya it gets darned cold in the desert. Our posted
temps always make people laugh but I can tell you... sitting on
Ellen's ('63) porch last weekend to have my little smokey treats
I was in my (long) shirt sleeves and felt just right... sitting
on my patio I'm in sweats and still cold... even the cats give
me a pitiful look while they wait for me to finish... gives the
term "Cool Desert Nights" a whole new meaning... NFR (National
Finals Rodeo) has been in town all week. Tonight I'll make my
obligatory appearance... don't go near as much as I did when my
Dad was alive... Can't really explain it because that old man
and I never went anywhere together... cept I do remember going
to the dump with him once in the '50s... Lavender Blue was
popular and it was the first time he didn't change the station
when "my" music came on... He also took me to Wellsian Pond
where Jackson KEENEY ('65) and I met in the early '50s and yes,
Peter Joe CARROLL ('65) reminded me on my birthday that we 
used to go to Pow Wows in the '50s but the point is we weren't
"pals"... and we never went to NFR together but he was always
happy when I'd bring him back a Jacket or buckle or some other
memento... He and Ben Johnson came out west together years and
years ago before Ben won the Oscar for Last Picture Show and
before he took an NFR gold buckle for team roping so I got him 
a reproduction of Ben's Buckle one year... he did like that...
Because my Jacket is old and ragged, I wore his to the '63 Red
Sweater event and his buckle too... Jimbeaux ('63) took one look
at me and said: "hmm... cowboy boots and a pawn shop buckle...
"... arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh... but today I wanna wish an HB to a 
guy I have come to "know" and enjoy thru our beloved Sandstorm..

Ahhh... I know it well, I was one of the first crew to work
there when it opened. It was the Star View Drive In. When it
opened it was located in Heminger City (Now West Richland). It
was operated by The Mid State theater Corp. and was Managed by
an Irvin Forke at the time. I forget the first movie to show on
opening night, but do remember the cartoon was the Road Runner.
It was the first time anyone had seen one and the place rocked
with laughter.

The picture had to have been taken from the side of Flat Top.
The race track wasn't there when it opened in '54. Thanks to
Gary for posting the picture, I have for years wished for a
picture of it. Now I have one... Now If someone has a picture of
the North Star Theater that was located in North Richland at the
time, it would sure make my day..

"pathetic is as pathetic does" (don't ask what that means... I
saw it inna movie so it must be true)... just shows he has no
concept of the lengths a man will go for true love... besides...
I may be stupud but at least I don't disclose the name I was
given in the witness protection program in a published document
on the internet!!!!!!! So neener neener (have no clue what that
means either but everyone said it when we were kids)

Whewwwwwwww I feel much better now, Because as with my post on
the 13th I get to wish a beeeeeeeuuuuuteeeeeeeful Bomber-babe an
HB today and no SCPO is gonna spoil it for me. I've just always
known this girl since we were little kids and she is very
special to me... I remember at our 25th, Tony HARRAH ('65)
suggested we should "get together"... it came as a total shock
to both of us... we looked at each other for about half a minute
and just broke into laughter... I mean it would be like a
brother/sister thing... as a dear friend of mine is fond of
saying: "Eeeeyeeeeew!" I mean not that this babe isn't a total
babe... it's just... well you know... not done in polite
company... I know I know I know I've said it before... but
Bomber friendships really are more like being siblings... OK so
I have had some relationships with Bomber-babes... OK so have
hadda lotta relationships with Bomber-babes... so I guess that's
kind of inconsistent with my earlier statement... I mean...

Given the events in Newtown, CT, Friday, perhaps what we have 
to say here is not all that important in the overall scheme of
things. It is important to some of us, in that it strengthens
Bomber bonds. Outsiders might not want to consider that
important, but they don't know us.

With all that said, sorry to hear the Eastern Eagles got knocked
out of the playoffs. Put up a good game of it, but apparently
the red turf didn't help. Wait until next year.

Ann, sorry to hear RGIII will not be playing this Sunday; guess
they figure his health in the long run is more important than
this game.

This year's Gold Medal Class of '63 Marching, Caroling and
Chowder Society Christmas Gala was one for the books. We did
have a couple of interlopers from the Card Table Class of '65 in
attendance, two of whom added some considerable dignity to the
do and one exponentially negated their efforts. The traditional
Friday night Pajama Party again marked the official start of the
Holiday Season with the spilling of the wine and someone from
California licking the salt off of the cashews. Special thanks
to Brother Leo for putting it all together and we'll muster
again next year on December 7th 2013, mark your calendars.

in his pajamas and six guns... the teacher, Ilene, said "Terry
Davis, take off those guns"... T whirled at her... took a
fightin' stance and said "Nobody takes my guns, stranger!"

Re: Truly A Small Bomber World

It is truly a small Bomber world. I had my yearly mammogram on
6Dec and was recalled for additional views and an ultrasound of
my left breast. I went in yesterday (14th) and had those studies
done. When the mammo. tech said my last name was familiar she
asked where I was from. You guessed it she not only is herself a
Bomber, class of '71 but has a brother who graduated with me and
also her "steady guy" while in high school was in my class. I
was then called by the U/S tech. and she had been told I was a
Richland Bomber and she too is, class of '80. Of course she
didn't know me with the age difference. She said she rarely goes
back to Richland but did attend her 30th a couple of years ago.
You never know when you may run into or under what circumstances 
find fellow Bombers.

I've been using this imaging center for 5 years and it's 
the first time this mammo. tech. did my study, never had had 
ultrasound done there. Please, if you find it in your hearts,
keep me in your prayers as I now must undergo a biopsy of the
area to determine what it may or may not be, thanks.

I miss-spoke earlier when I delineated McCOY's high school
connections. What follows is, I believe, correct. When he
thought he graduated in '44, he was a Bronc. When he completed
his course in Washington State History in '45, he was a Beaver.
In 2002, he finally received his diploma from R.H.S., which
officially makes him a Bomber. In doing all this research, I
could not prove that he played left tackle for the '27 Colts; 
so his Richland connections to not go that far back. I trust 
all this clears the air.

school year... he was class of '45 and 1945 was the year that 
the mascot changed from Broncs to Beavers... He did come back,

mascot changed from Beavers to Bombers. He completed his 
Washington State History course with class of '46, but never got 
a diploma. HOWEVER, UW received his records when they asked for 
them. During the 2002 Club 40 party, he finally got his diploma,
signed by the 2002 principal.

Re: Diving adventure

Did you see the 60 Minutes special on Sunday evening on CBS?
They featured the salvage of the Costa Concordia in Giglio,
Italy. Mike Lucia, the son of a very good friend of mine (Dennis
Lucia), has been there for seven weeks with the American salvage
dive team from Global Diving. Mike and some of the divers met
Lesley Stahl from 60-minutes by chance in a bistro. The divers
were not allowed to discuss the salvage on orders from the
salvage company (Titan). 

Dennis was a scuba diving student of mine in the 1970s. In 1983
he came to Houston and spent some time living with me while I
ran him through a commercial diver training program. Later in
1987 we became business partners. Mike learned to dive from his
dad, but took his training to a much higher level at the Divers
Institute of Technology in Seattle. Mike is at the peak of his
career right now and we are all very proud of him.

Re: My Mentor and My Friend

Couple of things before I wish a VERY dear friend an HB. First,
I know squids can be dense... I fully understand Dick McCOY's
('45; '46; '02) history. Believe it or not, I even know the
history of our school's mascots... I even have a little beaver
stuffed animal that has all of our mascots incorporated in to
his little self... but the poor SCPO ('54) missed my attempt at
humor when I threatened to turn him in to the Beaver Police the
other day. It's OK, man, you still get to win our little daily
email jabs.

My illugitumutt son sent me a poster of a Vietnam documentary 
he narrated. He sent it to me in time for his B-day wish, but 
I neglected to open it till today. I feel badly about that but
what can I say... I'm pitiful. Terry and I went to Dallas for 
a Vietnam Veterans of America Event a few months ago and the
director of the documentary was there and we all got to view 
it. It was wonderful and Terry ('65) was magnificent. Terry 
went back for the premier and it was very well received. I am
including a poster with this post that shows the fellow who was
the subject of the film when he was rescued from his unit after
it was over-run and as he looks today. Terry explained in his
email to me:

"True story. The young wounded soldier in bottom of photo is 
the old warrior in the top. That photo appeared in the Memphis
papers 2 days after the famous massacre and was the first
indication his family had that he was alive! 43 years later,
cameras follow him back to Vietnam in search of the remains of
his fallen friend. I narrated the film, and was honored to do
so. Terry"

Now back to the true subject of this post... I've said a million
times I might well not have made it through Col-Hi without this
guy to guide me. Tho I am such a well rounded, good hearted,
downright spiffy dude today, it was not always so... I was
troubled as a kid to say the least. I had three interests in 
my entire adolescent life: Rock 'n' Roll, cars and girls (in 
varying order at any given time)... tho in hind-sight, the b-day 
boy may disagree, he had a much better focus than I... he always 
managed to get me to the church on time, so to speak and I've 
loved him as a brother for as long as I've known him. One day, 
years ago, a bunch of us were sitting in a room at the old DI,
and the B-day boy shared his feelings as a kid and the rest of
us chimed in... it was the first time I actually understood that
I was not alone in my feelings of being "less than" as a kid. 
I admired him greatly for what he shared and got the rest of us 
to share, that day. He once sent me a b-day card that showed two
JD's on the front... our receptionist asked if that was really
the two of us in the photo... either very perceptive of her 
or very naive... so HAPPY BIRTHDAY Tony HARRAH ('65) on your
special day, December 19, 2012... don't spend that gubmint check
in on place!

Re: Biopsy

I have my biopsy set for 7Jan2013. The insurance company didn't
require prior authorization even though they told me they did. I
talked with a nurse who is employed by the clinic and asked her
a few questions, she's actually a breast cancer navigator but I
figured the questions I had she would be the best one to answer
them. I told her I work in the field when I'm working and she
said sometimes the more we know about something the worse off it
can be on you. She put my name on her calendar and will be in
the room while I undergo the biopsy, she said if anything to act
as a distraction for you and I got a laugh out of it. My doctor
will be out of town until the 8th so it will work out perfectly
as she should have the pathology report by the end of the week.
I dropped her an email since she leaves tomorrow and told her
and she said she'd call me on the 9th if she doesn't hear from
me.

Thanks Tony, now I am hesitant to drive down the block. Actually
the video is a good reminder how fast things can happen and an
advertisement for defensive driving. We had our first snowy day
and I was surprised how whacky the traffic got in just a matter
of minutes before I could get to a safe place. I usually avoid
driving until the body repair shops begin to fill their lots. I
take that as sign that many of the slow learners have had a
lesson and are hopefully "off" the road.

It does not bode well for me to pull off another full house on

Thank you so very much for the train ride. The train was a
wonderful way to travel. I left home in Richland and went to
Denver for nursing school. I took the train home at Christmas
and for my summers break. It took 4 days off of my time with
family but an enjoyable time, to relax and be prepared for
relaxing with family and anticipating visits with high school
friends upon arrival. Then had time to reflect and prepare for
another quarter of schooling. Fond memories. I still want to
take the trans-Canadian train trip.

I went to four hi schools. No wonder it took me 4 1/2 years
to escape in December, 1945. No Washington State History
anywhere. No graduate until 2002 when Burt PIERARD ('59),
Ray CONLEY ('46-RIP) and Principal Steve NEILL ('72) took pity 
on me. Gown, march Pomp and Circumstances etc. at Club 40.

It's beginning to look like Christmas here in s.e. Indiana, as
we had a windy, winter storm blow in last night from the west,
and woke up to our lawn almost covered with the white stuff...
and baby, it is cold outside, especially with the cold wind. 
We will do a midnight Christmas Eve service at the Hope United
Methodist Church, and I just noticed that the Moravian church
will have a 6pm service. So I'm thinking maybe we Methodists
could go to the Moravian 6pm service, as I've never attended a
Moravian service before. 

This town of Hope was founded by the Moravian Church in 1830,
and our United Methodist Church is very historic looking, as it 
was built from a catalogue in 1890. You can view it on our web

traveling home from Denver's nursing school by train… I also
took the train several times in my years at Spokane's Sacred

The other day I saw that Face Book had deleted a comment I had
made to some message someone sent me... the reason given was
that it was abusive or SPAM! I haven't a clue what I said, but
that's what it said... now, I haven't received a Sandstorm for
days because AOL simply chooses not to allow it... how nice 
of them to determine what goes out over my name and what I
receive... starting to remind me of another group... Oh well, I
really am still too full to complain... we had our firm Lunch
yesterday at a Brazilian place where they come around with types
of meat and slice it right on your plate... they also have a
salad bar and I was warned in advance to be careful... they 
had so many wonderful cheeses and other things I just love that 
I returned with my full plate wondering where the meat was
supposed to go... When we were all finished we were offered
dessert... well, not one to turn down pecan pie alley mode, I
had a huge slice (not nearly as good as Ellen WEIHERMILLER's
('63)), but very tasty just the same... which is a seg way to
the b-days today... At the dinner/slumber party a couple of
weeks ago, at which, contrary to some muckraking, yellow
journalism which appeared herein a while back, absolutely
nothing of any interest occurred... Rosalie LANSING ('63)
brought up the fact that the two b-day Bomber-dudes had been
best friends since forever and remained so to this day... now
the whole time I've been wishing these two HBs, I didn't know
that little historical fact and it's cool that they share their

First of all, I want to wish all my Bomber friend the happiest
of Christmas seasons. I always enjoyed Christmas in Richland...
from attending the Knights of Columbus children's parties out at
the old Quonset hut with Ernie Langevin (Bomber Dad) playing the
role of Santa to getting to join the raucous carolers that Kerry
SULLIVAN ('68) used to put together for a number of years during
the 1970s. There was a succession of houses we visited and
imposed on for libations... the Nikolas, Coach Rish, the Barbers
and, of course, the Water Treatment Plant... following the
mandatory stop at the Uptown Tavern to serenade Tommy
Volpentest. Good memories, to say the least.

I returned from a business trip last night to find a special
package waiting for me... the latest CD from old friend 
and fellow Class of '71 buddy, Gene SWIFT. It is called 
"Zinjanthropus Man" and is almost entirely songs that Gene 
wrote and plays multiple instruments on. Pretty sure you could 
find it on Amazon, along with Gene's other works ... 
     
He features Larry FRITZ ('71) on one of the songs but think 
Larry has been busy promoting his new book... 2000 Hat Blues 
Licks ...     

Music was a major part of my life growing up in Richland some of
my first "heroes" were folks from around the Tri-Cities playing
in local bands. Although there were a ton of good bands that
came through Richland... my all-time favorite had to be the 
Isle of Phyve... anchored by Robert MAGULA ('68) on drums and 
Tom PEASHKA ('68) on Bass Randy FULLMER ('68) on guitar and 
Keith GOSNEY ('66) on vocals were way cool but I was fascinated 
from the 1st time I heard one, by the Hammond B-3 organ. I think
these guys were the 1st in the Tri-Cities to have one, or at
least the 1st that I ever saw or heard and Lynn Stanfield knew
how to play it. I think that Lynn eventually left the band to 
go on a mission (LDS) and I don't think he ever went back to
playing professionally... although I have it on good authority
that he was the best Framing Contractor the Tri-Cities ever 
had. He was replaced by Paul KOOP ('66) when the band moved to 
Seattle and morphed into Factory. I grew up close to the Koop's, 
who lived on Swift Boulevard almost within spitting distance of 
the big pool and within an easy walk to Col-Hi. I hung some with
Bill KOOP ('69) when we were kids and remember that Paul was a
heck of a classical pianist and I think sometimes he played
organ at Christ the King church (although I think it was Byrne
HASKINS ('65) who held that steady gig). Anyway, Factory did not
have a Bassist (I think Tom was off to college by then) because
Paul played Bass Pedals on the B-3 and lead/rhythm on the
keyboard. I could stand over in front of the Leslie Speaker and
watch Paul play for hours. He was pretty much a rock god to me.
Way cool stuff to 14 year old boy who thought that being a rock
musician was about the coolest thing around.

I still keep in touch with other Richland music legends of my
day like Bob DANA ('71), Terry DELSING ('71) and Gary HARMON ('71).
I will share that one my favorite singular Richland music
memories was Julie COLE ('70) belting out "Baby it's You" with
Greg REITEN's ('69) band... Lenore (named after his Mom) back in
'70 or '71... Not only could Julie belt out a tune but she was 
oh so easy on the eyes. Mary GUSTAVSON ('72) had a great voice 
and could have made it in music, if she had wanted and I was 
lucky enough to get to hear her on a pretty regular basis. 

Finally, would be remiss not to mention Belinda SKINNER ('72)... 
one of the finest voices to ever come out of the Tri-Cities. I 
think she still lives and works professionally in the L.A. area 
somewhere.

Sorry... got kind of carried away. Hopefully, Maren can correct
any of the class years I may have missed or screwed up. When
you are 14, you only know that anyone who could grow their hair
as long as they wanted and drove a car was OLD:):) Gene...
thanks for inspiring my little walk down musical memory lane.

And one of the best story tellers to ever grace the Sandstorm,
Jeff CURTIS ('69) was also a major part of the Richland music
scene. Hey Jeff... remember Richland Teen Action (RTA)?? Maybe
some of this will stir up a few other musical memories...

To all you old folks I send out this helpful advisory:
 
I just turned 85 on the 14th and have the following observations.

Old folks go thru stages in there aging... when I turned 60 I 
felt that I was middle aged. I reasoned it was 30 years back
to when I was 30, a young man, and 30 years hence to 90 an old 
one... So, I was good.

Then I turned 70. A little more concerned I thought I should do
some things that I needed to do; start painting again, write a
book, go to the big Island and southern Europe. 

At 80, having done none of those things, I started worrying WHEN
I would die. I read the obits, and noted that many men lived to
90, and did not notice that many more didn't. I also notified
[my wife] Ida that she would have to drive most of the time,
which she does. I just obtained another four-year license, tho.

At 85 I have stopped worrying about WHEN I would die, and
concentrated on HOW. Getting hit buy a truck is no fun. As I am
a 20 year survivor, cancer is out. I still see my Oncologist,
because I enjoy talking with him, and he hasn't enuf $ to buy
his yacht yet. I note that many men die in their sleep. If that
happens to me, you may say that I died doing what I loved best.
Actually, I am half dead now. My right leg has edema, my right
kidney gave out four years ago, My right eye is blind and my
right ear is mostly deaf. Alternately all the stuff on my left
side is in excellent shape. However, it does have to drag the
other side along. 

A also reflect on how life's pleasures have slipped away. Water
skiing gone 50 years ago. Cigarettes 36. Booze, I've thankfully
been sober for 24 years. Snow skiing 20 years ago. And sex...
well that is moot. Very moot.
 
After this cheerful tract, have a very Merry Christmas. HO! HO!

You say you never took Washington State History during your
tenure in the Richland Public School System? I have been under
the impression that: a) this was the reason why you went back
to school in '46; and: b) it is (or was a requirement) for
graduation. Up until the time of my graduation, I lived in
Washington State, but was still required to take the course.
Which I did during 9th grade at Carmichael (go Cougars!). My
oldest son, BA, MA Western Oregon University (formerly Western
Oregon College of Education, formerly Western Oregon Normal
School), was required to take the course even though he teaches
at the Job Corps Center in Moses Lake (a federal job), just to
make the Washington Board of Education happy.

      [I took Washington State History at Carmichael, too (yes,
      go, Cougars, go blue & white) and I can STILL recite
      the 39 counties (in alphabetical order) in the state of
      Washington in somewhat less than 15 seconds. You see, my
      brother, Tim ('62) took the course the year before I 
      did and HIS teacher had a contest for who could say the
      counties the fastest and I helped him study... figured
      I'd have a leg up on everybody the next year, BUT... MY
      teacher had no such contest... *SIGH* -Maren]

Re: Re: 100th Birthday-Dec 24th

Christmas Eve, December 24, would be our Dad Grover Dawson's
(RIP) 100th birthday. Now we know that every dad has a 100th
birthday sooner or later, but this annual birthday was kinda
unique and some Bombers may remember it over the years. Dad
always said that he was cheated because his birthday and
Christmas were so close that he only got one present, not two,
from everyone. Well, we made up for that in the 1950s and early
'60s.

Dad's store, Dawson-Richards in Uptown Richland, then Men's and
Boys' Clothing (and later Womens'), was a pretty bustling place
just before Christmas. On Dad's birthday, everyone brought
goodies to eat and drink and quite a spread was laid out in the
back room (with the sewing ladies). Customers were invited to
help celebrate, especially any students or former students and
anyone who ever had worked at the store. All former employees
who were home from college were invited to work any days that
they could before Christmas. Usually the visitors broke out in
a rousing "Happy Birthday" at least once during the day.

It was such fun to grow up in that atmosphere. Dad had lots of
fans from Col-Hi, because he was on the Richland School Board
for 13 years, he co-founded the Bomber Boosters, and always
sponsored the football and basketball games on the radio, in
addition to sponsoring a Little League team and later a young
adult community basketball team.

So Happy Birthday Dad; we know that you are watching over us and
our good old high school.

Re: Best Regards for the Seasons

As you read this I will be landing in Anchorage, AK for my 9th
consecutive Christmas away from home. Jackie and I will hit the
pawn shops Christmas Eve Day. It is amazing the things you can
find on sale at sometimes huge discounts. Last year I picked up
a brand new-still-in-the-factory-sealed-box, electrical test
meter that runs $350 to $400 in electrical shops. It was marked
$69 and I offered $45 and they took it. We also bought some
personal items for each other at big savings. We will likely
have a quiet dinner at a favorite eatery Christmas Day and in
the evening drive around a see some decorations.

December 26 and 27, I will work with her prepping her two large 
New Years eve displays. She does the Wasilla City Display at the
park at 8PM and private one at 10PM.

On the morning of the 28th (check-in at 04:30 hr) I am off
flying again to Dutch Harbor, AK for their New Years Eve
display. We have increased the size of that display again and
now we have 2 trailers to pull out to the site. My crew up there
will have it all set up and prewired. I sent them detailed plans
and directions weeks ago and they are the best crew I have ever
had. All we have to when I get there is to load the explosives
and weather permitting, shoot it at 12 midnight sharp. On the
second when the time on my cell phone changes from 11:59 to
12:00, the first shell rises.

Aside from missing Christmas with great grandchildren I really
enjoy doing that event. The people are all nice folks, they
really like what I do. With the great crew I have I can really
pull out the stops and open the bag of tricks. They do anything
I ask in set-up. The result is a brite, noisy, and really
exciting display with continuous multiple effects at multiple
levels.

I will fly homeward a year older on my birthday (the 6th of 
January). I keep telling myself I may age but I refuse to grow 
old.

OK enough of this, I must get to the reason I started this
missive...

Here is my wish for you and yours to enjoy the blessings of the
Christmas season and may each of you have a safe, healthy,
happy, and prosperous New Year.

Just for old times sake fill 'er up and check the oil. And Vic,
one thing you must have learned working at Waschers Mobile 
right across McMurray from Kaisers, is that you do NOT put 
the chains on the REAR tires of a Toranado!!!! (I have no clue 
why I remember that but somebody did that many years ago)

And sorry Vic, Kerry SULLIVAN ('68) may well indeed have joined
the carolers way back when but the event always started at
Hedges house (Joe and Ginger had the hot spiced wine heated) 
and ended at Nikola Manor. Chris's dad always took movies and
spliced together the following year so each year we could see
many years of movies featuring the gang. The highlight was
always the Richie Court stop, at Rooster and Vertabrae
Annderson's house where ole Andy would put out a few bottles of
his wine, the most awful, terrible tasting stuff in the world.
It put back wine making in the area 25 years! It was so bad we
had to get an environmental impact statement just to dump it down
the storm sewer... and we used to drink MD 20-20!

Kind of sad when a Jewish guy has to straighten out you CK guys
on Christmas traditions! My favorite, of course, was trolling
Midnight Mass for CK babes!

When I think of all our great Bomber pals gone but not
forgotten, my #1 of course is Big George DANA ('70-RIP)
especially at this time of year. We would swing by the Dana's
on Gowen and the real George (George's Dad) "in honor of the
holidays" would bring out "the good stuff", a big bottle of
Crowne Royal. We would each get a drink, then it was back to
cans of Schmidt for us free loaders. 

Endless great holiday memories of Richland. Everyone have a
great holiday and good 2013.

Re: Chief Jo Christmas of 1958

In a collection of old family photos I find a snapshot of the
front entry to Chief Jo Junior High School—the second storey 
and storey-high (and equally wide) window space at that time 
above the doors. Shown is a student-painted manger scene for
Christmas, some 15’ by 15’ feet. I was invited by the school to
do this. The painting was done on five 3’ wide rolls of wheat
paper, and then over-painted with translucent linseed oil
(sticky stuff) to give a back-lighted and stained glass window
quality at night. 

A day or two after the masterpiece was completed and hung (all
225 sq. ft.), it disappeared from sight. A miracle!!! Not
quite. A parent had complained about the Christmas message on a
school yard. The climate was already beginning to change. It was
a long walk home. I was still no older than the other students,
but suddenly wiser by far.

I think back to this event when I read Dick McCOY's  ('45)
remorse that he has never written his book. For those who might
be interested, over the past five years I have written "the
book" and gotten it published. The connection to 1958 didn't
strike me until this morning. The title: Beyond Secularism and
Jihad? A Triangular Inquiry into the Mosque, the Manger &
Modernity (University Press of America, 2012). Carried by Amazon
and Barnes & Noble, and Kindle has a generous peek. I wanted the
benefit of an academic publisher, but the downside is that the
price is vastly inflated (not many sales and I may never see
royalties, so this is not a sales pitch.) A long and compact
read, with countless footnotes, but there it is.

Becky WERSEN Fletcher ('65) and I saw Johnny Mathis' Christmas 
show with the Oregon Symphony last night. He's 10 years older 
than us, and looks 10 younger! 

The songs we necked to. The words that became what is: 
"Hold me close, never let me go... I'll love you till the poets

Dawson-Richards was a great place to work in the '60s especially
during the holiday season! The store was busy, we wrapped most
of the gifts for customers, there was food-a-plenty, and there
was a marvelous "family feel" to the store. It hardly seemed
like work at all!

Re: Trains

I remember the clackity-clack... the Whoooo-whoo and the,
swaying motion of the train going down the tracks as if it was
yesterday. I remember the polite, helpful, black porters, the
sparkling glasses on the dining tables, the linens and the
beautiful plates. The funniest memory was climbing up into the
berth at night, my mom tucking me in bed and us singing all 
the train songs we knew, like "Tootsie Toot Tootsie" and
"Chattanooga Choo-choo", as we watched the lights bounce up and
down outside of the window as we rolled a long... destination ,
Pasco train station! My memory really kicked in when we rumbled
in late at night, and I saw the lights and my Daddy to be,
waiting for us. When I jumped in his arms, little did I know
what adventures awaited for me in my new home of West Richland! 
That was December of 1948. I've taken many train rides since
that have all been special with children and grandchildren...
but nothing can compare with the thrill, and excitement of a new
experience for a 4 and 1/2 year old and especially in that time
period... which one can only hope to duplicate today.

That month gave me another first time experience and adventure,
my first snow! We not only got snowed in that winter... but on
our first trip into Richland... I can remember Uptown covered in
snow, the candy cane lights glowing on the lamp posts and my mom
singing "Silver Bells". It was a new song... and became one of
her favorite Christmas songs! The train video was set to the
music of "Via Con Dios" another of my Mom's favorite songs that
she taught me. Go with God!

May you all have a wonderful Christmas with all the songs and
smells and great memories of the holidays to warm your heart.
God bless you all Bomber family... you mean so much to me... you
who keep the memories burning bright bless us all!

Re: Does a Toronado even need tire chains? 

I've heard that story too. Someone told me he saw a lady arrive
in Spokane; she had a service station put chains on her Toronado
in Montana then drove it way all the way to Spokane with chains
on the rear wheels.

I bought a '75 Toronado in '78 or '79 and the first winter got a
new set of tire chains for it. I have driven that car across the
passes in the winter. I drove Satus Pass one night in the snow
when all the trucks and half the cars had chains on and never
had the slightest problem. Driving to Spokane one night it 
was snowing and a lot of cars were in the ditch. Just at the
Fishhook turn-off I moved the car over a little to avoid a clump
of snow, went sliding and landed in the ditch headed the wrong
way. (If you start sliding in a front-wheel drive car you will
slide just as bad as a rear-wheel drive car.) The car was at
such an angle there was no way I could get the chains on, but I
turned the front wheels up towards the road as far as they would
go, gave it the gas and plowed my way out of the ditch making a
180 and was back on the road without even getting out of the
car. I climbed a fairly high hill with curves in it covered with
black ice; front wheels spinning all the way but I had complete
control of where I was going, I was more worried about the cars
coming down the hill.

I drove that car until it had aver 260,000 miles on it and then
I found a really nice 1978 El Dorado, last of the big ones. 
(For those who are not car nuts, the El Dorado is the Cadillac
version of the Oldsmobile Toronado.) That car was old by then,
but really nice condition except for the vinyl top. I even took
it to an all GM car show once. Same thing--you could plow snow
with that car. I drove it for over 100,000 until it was rear-
ended by a big four door pickup, and his insurance company paid
me $800 more than I had payed for it.

I put over 300,000 miles on those two cars together and I still
have a set of brand new unused tire chains. I always wondered
how those cars would preform in the snow with chains on, but
never felt the need to put them on. (Hindsight--I should have
had them on that one time.) Maybe someday I will buy a pickup
they fit. I guess it is either that or Craig's list.

I have never bought a car since then that I really liked. They
keep telling us these newer cars are safer, but if I was going
to be in an accident, even without air bags, I would rather be
in one of those cars that little (not so new anymore) Buick
Century I am driving now. When my El Dorado was rear-ended they
said at the body shop I got hit pretty hard and if I had been in
a new car the rear bumper would be about where the rear window
was. I could still open and close the trunk, although you had to
slam it to get it to stay closed.

-Dennis HAMMER ('64) ~  Saw snow coming down pretty good for a 
      few minutes last night, but it didn't stick.  Right now 
      the sun is shinning and it is 50°. My PUD bill was
      outrageous this month and it hasn't really gotten cold 
      yet, so here's hoping I've been bad enough Santa will 
      bring me a whole bunch of coal so I could use it to help 
      heat the house.

a genuine twofer... right here in Richland City... but first
lemme go back in time just a smidge... it was prolly '63 and I
wuz just 17 you know what I mean and the way I looked wuz way
beyond compaaaaare... no no no that ain't right... but I wuz
17... and I wanted one a them really cool paint jobs on my
car... $50 smackers if I did the sanding myself... so I saved up
my cigarette money (that must a been the time when I bought one
of those little machines and rolled my own... no kidding... they
tasted awful but wuz cheap) and went over to the paintin' house
and forked over the moola... picked out the color... metallic
cocoa brown... '53 Chrysler color... I wanted to drive it
primered for a day but the B-day Boy's big bro ('58) said
"NO"... when it wuz finished it was so ravishing... really... 
I did find out that a girl from the class '64 had a '53 Ford
painted a similar color to '54 coupe with more red in it...
found out because she came screaming around the corner of
Stevens and VanGeisen and my mom swore it was me... I suggested
she was color blind not to see the difference in colors... plus
the year of the car... I think it was Vernona CHAPPELLE ('64)
who had the car... now if only I coulda got me one a them Clem
shifters, I'da been the cat's meow! So the reason for that
little bitta my history is that our b-day boy prolly watched my
car (and a million others) being painted... I must congrachate
the b-day boy on giving up bikes a short while back... we is
just too brittle for them these days (I know... I don't wanna
hear from you guys I run with that continue to use that form of
transportation... and I know there's a buncha ya... Especially
NOT you Gus ('57))... So HAPPY BIRTHDAY to a guy I consider a
very dear friend and buddy, Larry BOWLS ('64) on your special

for a few minutes this morning... the cats had never seen snow 
and didn't want to come in so I could go to work... Anyway, as 
I will be out for a while, I need to do another group hug...

Re: Passing of Steven Frederick STORDAHL 

With sadness I want to let you know that Steven Frederick 
STORDAHL passed away in Kennewick on December 19th. He was born 
February 5, 1952. His services will be at 1pm on Thursday, 
December 27th at Hillcrest in Kennewick. I don't know if he was 
a Bomber or not, but I babysat him, his three brothers and two 
sisters when I was in high school. His brothers are Wayne, 
Michael and Richard ('77), and sisters Patty ('72) and Debbie

I used to get most of my back-to-school clothes at Dawson-
Richards and remember it well. Was in there once with my Dad
(Frank), which was different as he usually didn't like to shop
much. Usually my Mom, Esther (RIP) took me there. But anyway I
was with my Dad and he was probably talking to your Dad. Dad
said that he and I were going to Spokane the next day (Saturday) 
to get some work done a trailer tent he bought in Spokane. They 
got to talking about it and your Dad offered some tickets to a 
Cougars game in Pullman. I was on cloud 9... going to a Cougars 
game in person! I think they played Oregon or Oregon St. and 
they even won! It was in the old wooden seat stadium... we had 
seats in the end zone, but lot of action was on our end of the 
field. It was a great day.

I still think about buying clothes there when I ride my bike
around Uptown once and a while.

Miss Nancy ('65) walked down the aisle to marry what was without
a doubt the greenest 2LT in the Army. It was only the lack of a

Fast forward to today, she still makes my palms sweat and my
knees weak and to paraphrase the words of that red haired, jug
eared, Sammy Oatmeal E-1 at Ft. Benning, I'm the "Most

telescope you couldn't find anyone happier than me.

Richland baseball Icon.

Mr. Roy Fowler passed away 12/25/122 at his daughter's home in
Spokane. Mr. Fowler is the father of Karen ('62) and Mike ('67).
Along with being a wonderful father, he will be remembered as
being one of the finest baseball coaches that ever walked on the
diamonds of Richland.

Rest in Peace, Mr. Fowler.

Re: Update on Bomberopoly board game

Season's Greetings! This is a brief update on Bomberopoly. As
you have realized, Bomberopoly game boards have not arrived.
Although we have had terrific support from our local sponsors
and Bomber alumni, we still have 25 spots on the board to get
sponsored. We have had several sponsors cancel, so we have more
spots to fill than previously expected. Until all spots are
sponsored, the board can't go to production. But, we have some
new businesses involved and I am hoping to get the boards out
this spring!

If I haven't had an opportunity to thank you in person, please
accept this as a heartfelt thank you for supporting Bomber

      "1951: Gene CONLEY ('48), the multi-sport standout from
      Richland, was named the No. 1 Minor League baseball
      player of the year by the Sporting News. The former
      Washington State College baseball and basketball star was
      a 20-game winner the previous summer with Hartford of the
      Eastern League."

My condolences to Mrs. Fowler, Karen, Mike and family. Someone
has to be the bearer of bad news Mick ('6'), and I sincerely
appreciate you letting us know.

I have told this story before, but I will tell it again. I went
over to the Fowler's home to grab Mike for a day of play and
frolicking (frolicking as in at twelve going down off the south
end of Wellsian Way into the cattails and weeds and smoking a
pack of cigs until we were green. Or throwing .22 bullets on the
sidewalk in front of Mike's house until one of the bullets hit
the screen door and we realized we could lose an eye, or worse,
doing that. JD'ing - never.). Usually Bill KAAS ('67) and John
HAMMER ('67) would hook up too. I show my face and instantly Mr.
Fowler believes this would be a good opportunity for Mike to
practice some pitching; specifically, his knuckle ball. So, I
put on a chest protector and catcher's mask and set up in front
of Mr. Fowler's nice wooden fence as a back-stop. Mike starts
pitching a few warm ups and then we get into the knuckle balls.
Mike, a pitcher who went on to try outs with the NY Yankees
(there really is something about DNA) a few years later could
throw a knuckle ball. The real deal. The ball comes at me
floating up, down, side ways and just before getting to me the
bottom drops out of it and sometimes the ball actually touched a
piece of the catcher's mitt. Mr. Fowler, getting a bit more edgy
each time the baseball slams into his wooden fence full force,
eventually dissatisfaction, possibly disgust, decides after
about ten or so, that the practice was over before he had to
replace some boards on his fence. This was the reason I spent my
baseball years (6-14) in left field.

A sad day indeed, Mike and Karen. All my love and best wishes
for a better year coming to you and your family.

Re: Question

I was talking with a fellow alum who has always been musically
talented. So, I asked if she remembered when Louis Armstrong and
Jewel Brown and his band came to Richland and played at the high
school. 

She didn't and I am trying to figure out what the specific date
was for when he was in Richland.

Does anyone remember the date?
