If memory serves (which often it doesn't), way back in the day
when we were young and may be up to third grade, didn't we make
paper baskets to put flowers in? The baskets were then delivered
to various places. This was all done in celebration of May Day.
Well, hey, we weren't marching in the streets, staging riots and
the like.
[I took May Day flowers that I picked (lilacs from the
yard) to the next door neighbor's porch. Then I knocked
on Mrs. Williamson's door and ran away!! Supposed to be
a "secret" who brought the flowers? -Maren]
And it being May Day, it is also time to break out the ol'
propeller beanie in honor of two younger Bomber Babes and one
very, very, very distant "cousin." One of the Bomber Babes I
actually spoke to. Can't remember the occasion, but we did speak
some where in the hallowed halls. The other Babe is on the edge
of memory. So, one and all, a hearty "Happy Birthday!" to Ginger
ROSE ('55), Sylvia PLUMB ('56) and Doug CARLSON ('71).

As one of the really elite athletes (NOT!!!) to come out of
Richland I think I will weigh in on Brad UPTON's ('74) comment
on athletic success and commitment and the response to his
comments.
I was a regular Richland guy, played multiple sports (hoops,
even a little football and tennis) into Chief Jo (Warriors!) but
was only good enough at tennis to continue on school teams.
Can't imagine what I would have done with track but fortunately,
as a tennis player, never had to find out. The differences in
those times and today have less to do with OTHER'S expectations
and everything to do with our expectations as kids and
participants.
I played 7th grade football and basketball at Chief Jo and I had
a real clear understanding of those of us who were there to try
hard and have fun (me) and those who in addition, were working
towards future growth in the sport, RHS varsity, even college
potential. WE made those choices, and worked towards them. Many
of us were clearly separated by talent. Some were separated by
desire, work ethic, etc. But we also had some common attributes
in our participation. Most of us WANTED to be there. Most of us
played 2-3 even 4 sports during the year. When we had practice,
we showed up, period. Guys who missed practice were either
pretty sick or dead! Very few of our parents hounded us or
reminded us we had practice... and get driven there???
The most common indicator to me was that we ALL played all the
time. By the time I was a sophomore at Col-Hi most of us regular
guys were down to one maybe two school team sports. But we NEVER
quit playing. Almost everybody I knew played basketball and
football on weekends at playgrounds, etc. Everybody who could,
played baseball organized and other all summer. I hung around
Riverside Park almost every day playing tennis. Bomber gym was
host to summer league hoops and plenty of non varsity types
played, every night. All of that athletic activity was just
another part of our lives together growing up. It never felt
separate or unique at all.
My daughter and her gang (2004 Kentridge) were much the same.
Things were competitive and many played. The big difference
today (my view) is that fewer and fewer kids really go play
because they really want to. These athletic activities are NOT
part of the fabric of school, community and growing up together.
The very talented are in elite, almost full time programs that
force making single sport decisions very early in life.
I always say the good ole days were not as good most remember
them, but when it comes to being a Bomber, they were better!

the 20th birthday of a Bomber Babe with whom I am better
acquainted with now than back in the day. Let's put 'em together

certainly hope her current husband takes her to somewhere nicer
than Taco Bell for dinner tonight.

Re: May Day
I'm subbing in an East Wenatchee School today [May Day] and
suggested to the kindergarten teacher to have the kids make May
baskets and I'll tell them how to deliver them with flowers (not
picked from the neighbors' prized flower garden) and not to go
to a strangers house!! So I'm keeping the tradition going... at
least in one room. It will be fun!!!

For all you local/Tri-Cities Bombers: For an afternoon of great
music and singing, come listen to the Columbia Chorale on Sunday
May 4th. We are a group of folks (about 45 of us) who love to
sing. Our concert this time is "From Big Bands to Big Apple",
including radio/big band sounds and show tunes. You will see 3
Bombers at this concert: Burt Pierard ('59) and Missy KEENEY
('59) are in a folk quartet, singing as our guests, and me -
Irene WALDNER ('69). I'm singing in the Chorale. This is
inexpensive entertainment for an afternoon - free, but as a non-
profit group, we still have expenses, so we do suggest $5 at the
door (We pay for the use of the facility, the sound man,
purchase music, etc.)
After this Sunday, we take the summer off, then will start up
again in August for the fall concert (twice a year). Sunday's
concert is at First Presbyterian Church, 2001 W. Kennewick
Avenue (the one opposite the Country Club golf course) at 3 pm.
Thanks - hope to see you this Sunday; come up and say Hi
afterward (cookie reception - that will get you there!!)

Hello from Kansas City!
Missouri, that is. Harrah's. (Uh, no, I don't think I'll try the
slots tonight.)
We continue to have a great trip with lots of interesting shows
and sights. Weather not too bad, either, considering what other
areas are putting up with. I'm sitting in the coffee shop, where
wi-fi is free--costs $10.95 to connect in the room. It's a bit
noisy here so will close for now. Still can't get into my
Facebook to let friends and family know where and how I am!
Tomorrow night we stay in Denver.

OK Bombers... before summer comes... I would like to do some
bragging about a Bomber classmate from the Golden Class of '63!
Let's see if you can guess who she is. We met at our Sweet
Adeline competition in Spokane 2 or was it 3 weeks ago... you
know how time passes so quickly and before you know it... OH,
yes it was the week-end of April 12th... well I am not too late.
Anyway it was so great to connect with a couple of Bomber
classmates this week-end but what I wanted to brag about was,
first, the chorus from the Tri-Cities got 3 big awards. Rolling
Hills won the most improved chorus, and it also won FIRST PLACE
in one of the divisions. And our own Micki LUND Anderson ('63)
who is apart of Rolling Hills also is in a Quartet "Taken A
Chance", from this group and they won the AUDIENCE CHOICE award.
YEAH! Oh girls, women, ladies, Bombers, granddaughters, friends,
it is so fun to sing in these groups. It is such a healthy, fun,
ladies night out, good for stress, good for you. I know so many
of you loved to sing... so why not join right now? For those of
you in the Tri-Cities... you have one of the best groups in the
Pacific Northwest. And we do not just sing old songs. You should
have heard renditions of "The Night has a Thousand Eyes" and
"Footloose". A great time was had by all. Join the fun, sing for
yourself and others! Some of the other top groups came from
Bellevue and the Olympia area. In Portland there is the "Pride
of Portland" group that is 8th in the world... yes, I did say
the world.
Busy gardening, when it is not raining here in the gorge where
Spring has come. Shades of green splendor line the river, and
the dogwoods, lilacs, and too-numerous-to-mention flowers
decorate the forest and surrounding area. It is beautiful! Have
a great and "Happy Day"!

Are any of you able to help identify the people in this photo?
So far we have:
First clergyman, lower left, is Msgr. John Maraciullo. The
Bishop is Joseph P. Dougherty, 1st Bishop of Yakima. Msgr.
Edmond McGrath is on the Bishop's left (by the school.) Mary
SULLIVAN (?64) is the girl on the lower right with glasses and
white blouse. [Maren thinks MAYBE it's Wendy CARLBERG ('64-RIP)
and MAYBE it's neither]
That could be Brian CORCORAN (?64-RIP) to the right of the
Bishop (parking lot side.) The boy carrying the cross in front
of the Bishop looks like a Reilly (Lawrence, Kevin or Tom (?61-
RIP)) and we are thinking it is Kevin. The middle K of C
gentleman might be Ed Walsh. Dennis thought Frank Magula would
also be one of the Knights.
Please provide any help.

Larry MATTINGLY ('60) wrote about having surgery and getting
medicines from Mexico.
My son is allergic to bee sting... he is a handy man and is
exposed to bees often. He is seldom stung but needs the epipen
just in case. The manufactures are only packaging them in packs
of 2 with the same expiring date at a cost of nearly $400.
Absolutely ridiculous! His budget doesn't stretch that far.
Would Larry please give the information about ordering drugs
from his source! It would be greatly appreciated.

Today, being the 8th of May is cause for some minor celebration.
Why? you ask. I'll tell you. On this very day, way back in
history, a Bomber was born that I happen to know personally. We
went to school together (almost at the same time). He is,
sometimes, a pretty good fella, even with the hairs growing wild
on his face. A hearty "Happy Birthday!" and a tip of the ol'
propeller beanie is in order for Jim McKEOWN ('53).

Big Day is May 7th, 2014
No address as yet!
Bonnie RICHARDSON Reno ('58) called Barbara HORTON Pieterson ('58).
Bonnie visited with Jerry the 6th of May and found him feeding
himself with the left hand... meds are being delivered through
his stomach... Bonnie didn't know why the patch over his right
eye was back on. He's got a long recovery time, but he's working
on it and Bonnie said he's strong and getting better each week
she sees him. Bonnie couldn't find out his address so have to
talk with his girls for that.
Re: Last week's info! Sorry I didn't get info sent last week...
He has charmed the nurse there and said "Thank You" to Bonnie
and gave her a kiss on the cheek. She said he was still
improving... still breathing on his own during the day and
getting air through a tube at night. He is talking some...
sometimes hard to make out... he won't be extended there... will
be leaving on May 7th. 2014, and heading to the Tri-Cites
Bombers Cheers.

Re: Best excuse I've ever had
So I get kinda nervous when I don't have something to do alla
time. I'm beginning to get Terry DAVIS ('65) syndrome in my
almost middle age... As kids we always knew that Terry was
either on or off... 100 mph or asleep... no in between... I
"need" stuff to do... if I have nothing to do (more honestly
that I want to do) I can only think of one way to spend my
time... nap time without the graham crackers... just curl up on
my little love seat and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZz out... that, however,
makes me feel like I'm a lazy bum... so going into the weekend I
had 6 tasks involving installing new light fixtures, replacing
the hose, filling my lift with hydraulic fluid and cleaning up
the mess left by the escaping fluid and doing the front brakes
on my roadster... all that time with '50s on 5 blaring in my
ear... yeeeeeeeeeeees... On goes the radidio and out comes:
"Yummy yummy yummy I got love in my tummy... " Ah crap...
I glanced around... nope I'm not in a bunker or anything...
"Chris?" "yo hooo, Chris...?"... no I haven't fallen asleep and
been visited by the Chris Noel demon... "Come on down to my boat
baby... " oh my it's getting worse... next they'll be playing
Tommy Roe... or way worse "Baby I love you" by Andy Kim or what
ever his name was... Oh jeez they did... Oh please tell me this
is a bad dream... I ran to the box and sure enough on the right
station... Man since they took my favorite show with Norm N.
Nite off it's been bad enough but this is really awful...
worse than awful... I've hearda rock n roll heaven, now I'm
experiencing what rock n roll hell must be like (no offence to
those of you who loved the stuff I'm mentioning... I mean I can
dig the different strokes for different folks and all that so
just know I'm a rock n roll dinosaur... OK?)... OK so calm down,
David... it'll be over soon I'm sure... sure I'm sure... well it
lasted all weekend... some kinda new channel they were
pitching... "Oldies Rock n Roll Dance party" or something like
that... well you can imagine I worked faster than normal so I
could go take a nap... now by Monday I still hadn't recovered...
I had Frank WHITESIDE ('63), Leo BUSTAD ('64), Myrna BOLIN ('63)
and Brad PUGH (66) on my list... but during my breakdown, I had
read that Frank's b-day was actually on Sunday! Now last year
there was a little confusion on the correct date for his b-day
and I thought I had nailed down the 6th... nope wrong I got
aholda Frank and he confirmed that it was I that was
misinformed... well with all that going on I not only missed
Frank's b-day but all those kids onna 6th too... Now come on...
ya gotta admit... insanity is a great defense... I mean way
better than being captured by pirates... right? hello... right?

Very good to hear Jerry IRWIN ('58) is on the mend and heading
home! I'm back to "normal" with '50s on 5 back to its regular

So a couple of the first things I do inna morning is my prayers
and meditations, email my lil girl that I love her and read the
Sandstorm along with emails from a small gang of Bombers I email
a great deal... so this morning imagine my delight when I read
Ann ENGEL Schafer's ('63) post... now I can't say that the tasks
she listed are things I get all excited over... but Ann IS
something (one) to get excited over... well at that time in the
morning my hair looks pretty much like Grandpa Munster and I
hadn't taken a shower yet... but I knew I needed to pack some
essential items if I was gonna make the trip to Vancouver... now
some of you may recall (tho most of you won't) that I was on
"Homeland Security's" (why do they use those names??) watch list
for heading to Colorado or Montana or someplace with a pouch
fulla ammo (tho my gun was neatly and properly packed in my
cargo luggage) last year or so... so I shoulda been more
thoughtful, but hey... this is Ann! Once I got a few clothes and
my gun and ammo in my checked luggage I headed for the ol'
airport with my bag a stuff... now I knew that I'd need to do a
post for one a my bestest bud's b-days but I could do that from
Ann's... Oh my oh my you can't imagine my joy and excitement...
at the airport I dutifully threw my half full bottle of water
into the trash, knowing they won't letcha take it on... I
presented my boarding pass with a huge smile to the frowning TSA
lady and proceeded on... Holy Mackerel... I want you to know
that it's not just perfume and stuff they want in a plastic bag!
I mean I'da needed a huge garbage bag... what did I know... It
was "up against the wall" time again... They took my Mr Clean,
my Drano, my lawn sheers, my 409, almost took my little whisk
broom, gas for the lawn mower, oil for the lawn mower, Windex,
shovel, weed killer, bug spray, fertilizer (I can understand
that... I mean it about gagged me on the car ride) and just
about everything else in my little carry on bag... after all
that I missed my flight but did manage to talk them out of
taking me to jail... Now I ask you... how many other guys would
do that for a Bomber-babe???? But at least I was let go in time
to get my HB off for tomorrow's post... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Chuck

This year is Little League's 75th Anniversary (1939-2014). We
are celebrating the first Little League game played in the Tri-
Cities on May 21st, 1951 at Jefferson Field. Richland American
and Richland National both started in 1951 and played at
Jefferson. (Richland American was renamed to GRLL a few years
ago)
You are all invited to celebrate with us.
On May 21st, 2014 at 5pm at Jefferson Field (Floyd Gates Field),
we will have a small ceremony celebrating the birth of Little
League in the Tri-City area.
We will start at 5pm and finish around 5:30, so we have time to
start the game at 5:45pm. Bring a lawn chair and come watch some
Little League baseball.
We would love to hear any memories, photos, articles, etc. of
playing Little League in Richland.

the Junior Gyrene to fly up and help her clean house. Especially
after reading of his trials and tribulations on trying to catch

local "Freddies" (Fred Meyer) or Wal*Mart. Go figure.

What a stunner to find that I was the only contributor to

we were all saved from receiving a "not" issue.

world famous Bomber Calendar [for May 12th].

I just received news of the passing of our classmate, Dale, from
his sister Kathy ('60). Dale died on March 31, 2014, at OHSU
Hospital in Portland. He was 75. Dale is survived by two sons
Stanley and Dale, a daughter Jodie and sisters Shirley and
Kathleen and brother Robert.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Ohhhhhhhhh the buzzin' of the bees in the lollipop trees and the
sodie water fountain... the lemon aide springs and the bluebird
sings in the big rock candy mountain... Howdy there Buckaroos
this is your ol' Pal Bert Wells... nah It's just me... but had
ya goin' didn't I... dunno what got me to thinkin' of Bert... I
think I was singin' that song to myself... actually humming...
Terry DAVIS ('65) calls it my "slingblade"... he just hears
hmmmmm heeeeeeeeeer huuuu... but it is humming... my daughter
can tell when I'm in a room immediately because she hears me...
I corresponded with Bert for a while... he may have even
contacted Sandstorm one time... but maybe it's just one of those
things I dreamed up... [you didn't dream that up... he sent
something to the Sandstorm a few years back. -Maren] we traded
Christmas cards too for several years... I remember him flag
pole sitting in the Uptown one time by the Bank... flag pole
sitting was big for a while... dunno why... Bert was born in
Grandview and lived in Yakima for a while and that's where he
was living when he passed away at 79 in 2009. He worked at
Handford, played in bands, taught High School English, was a
speech professor at Eastern Oregon University and was even a DJ
in LaGrande (listen and learn Crowster ('65)). I guess ya might
say Bert was one of my early heroes... I've always said my
childhood heroes were: Audie Murphy, Gene Autry (I never liked
Roy Rogers for stealing Gene's title of "King of the Cowboys"
while Gene was off to war... prolly wasn't Roy's fault... I'm
sure somebody higher up the food chain at the time made the
call) and James Dean, but I realize now that Bert was a more
local hero... well you know me... no good reason for getting off
on Bert when it is a time for Bomber-babe b-day... but I'm
easily entertained and even easier thrown off track... well,

wanted to read more about him. I did not find too much, but I
did find an obituary which included a pretty good biography. I

Re: Howard BRANDT
Many of you probably knew Howard BRANDT ('57wb). Gifted as a
student, artist, and musician, Howard attended Marcus Whitman
Elementary School and Carmichael Junior High School before
moving to Seattle where he attended Queen Anne High School.
He subsequently received his B.S. in physics from MIT and his
Ph.D. in theoretical physics from the University of Washington .
During his career Howard's interests focused on General
Relativity and Quantum Computing. In each of these areas he made
significant contributions. Howard spent the last thirty years
working as a senior scientist at the Army Research Laboratory in
Washington, D.C.
Howard died on April 13, 2014. He had had a quadruple bypass
operation and an aortic valve replacement operation all rolled
into one. For a while Howard made significant improvement to the
extent that he and his wife, I and my wife, had planned a trip
to Romania in August. But, alas, it was not to be.
Howard is survived by his wife Marilyn, daughters Karen and
Sonja, and a beloved three-year-old granddaughter, Genevieve.
Lastly, Howard would have wanted me to let you know that he died
as a confirmed Catholic. We all will miss him greatly.

Gotta great email from Dean HOFF ('62) today with all kindsa
'50s memories... now they didn't have skeeter sprayers,
hookybobbin', or sniffin' bus fumes but the had some really cool
stuff... they had the "automat" which I only seen in movies...
in fact, I made a pledge years ago that I wuzn't never goin' to
New York... crossed the line one time from Bergen County, NJ for
dinner by axedent, so have made several trips since but never to
NY City... Terry DAVIS ('65) and I went to Buffalo one time and
hadda great time... so anyway, did ya know that Dean and the b-
day Bomber-babe are "class mates in law"? Yup, her other half is
a class mate a Dean's... hey so is Doug HAWKINS ('62), why I'll
bet there are bunches a class mates in law out there... where
wuz I... oh yeah... well there was one item I had hoped was outa
my memory for good, but I was wrong... It was the only thing I
ever remember really wanted Santy to get me for Christmas, even
if it was the one my Pop bought for hisself and maybe just wrap
it up and put it unner the tree, but nope... I got a shaving kit
and English Leather instead... hell I barely shave now... not
sure why I needed a shaving kit... it was water buffalo...
shoulda knowed there was gonna be water buffalos in my future...
Now I liked the English leather... so did every other guy in my
class... anyway, one a the '50's memories was a transistor
radio... like the Freddie Boom Boom Canon song... Transistor
sister... Brian JOHNSON ("65) got one and brought it by
Christmas morning... "Now or Never" was playing on it when we
got to HEIDLEBAUGH's ('65) house that morning... the email from
Dean also had Bandstand on there... "Don't" was one of the songs
on the board... when I walked out to finish woking on the front
end a my Shore Patrol, "Don't" was playing... spooky, but then
"Tall Cool One" came on and I forgot about "Don't"... If only
they'd play my favorite Louie Louie... oh well, at least they

didn't get the radio, but I lived... It coulda been way worse...
now ya gotta figure we were 13 that Christmas... .when we got to
Terry DAVIS' house he whipped out his present... a brand new
pair of Have Gun Will Travel 6 guns (I don't remember Paladin
wearing two guns... just one big one and a derringer... I also
don't have a vivid memory of the guns Terry got but he swears
there were two with knights on the holsters)... I mean any other
kid would have just shriveled up and died to get 6 guns at 13
(tho Beej was still only 12)... not Terry, the next Confirmation
class he showed up wearin' those guns in his pajamas... when
he teacher tried to take them away, he took his gun fighter's
stance and bellowed: "Nobody takes my guns, stranger!" Ah
what times we had back then... well nuff remunisin' and more
celebratin' before somebody falls asleep here... HAPPY BIRTHDAY

I meant to mention this earlier but forgetted, of course...
This year I managed to remember to post for all four b-days of a
Bomber-babe dynasty ('60, '63, 66 and 67) and got my Gold star
inna mail, which was way cool by itself... but Ellen
WEIHERMILLER ('63) also sent me a very cool Reddy Kilowatt (NAB)
pin in its original folder... I mean this is way way way cool...
Now I'm sure you kids from the '50s and older (I mean more
mature) member Reddy very well. You may not know that Reddy was
borned on March 14, 1926... so I missed his b-day by quite a bit
this year... He was put inna movie by Walter Lantz of Woody
Woodpecker fame and his voice was done by Sherman, Mr. Peabody's
pet boy... I remember seeing Reddy everywhere growing up in
Richland and he was almost as familiar as the "atom" symbol for
the Atomic City. I remember stickers with the Atomic City symbol
everywhere... I think someone (Jimbeaux ('63)???) sending me
one... Jimbeaux has a famous "box" where nearly anything and
everything can be found... He is always coming up with something
new... the last thing he produced and was kind enough to present
to me was a book full of Vietnam lighters... we all had them...
Zippos and Zippo knock offs with engravings on them... I was
dumb enough to send mine home in my sea bag along with RX
sunglasses and other treasures that were stolen before they got
to CONUS or maybe after who knows... I can't say the "postal"
service was all that reliable... I remember one time a guy was
picking up the mail and the guys in the mail hut were blaring
rock n roll music... most of which turned out to be stolen from
the mail along with many real to real recorders sent home for
safe keeping (mine included)... so he's standing there listening
to the Real Don Steele on a tape dedicated to Cpl Johnny
Schmuck... as Don gives the dedication to Cpl Schmuck (NAB and
not his real name)... the guy reported it and the boyz headed
for the brig and we didn't get no mail for a while... sometimes
that was a good thing tho... MY grandmother sent me a birthday
cake for my 21st b-day that came by ship... all that was
salvageable was the stale popcorn she packed it in... but boy
did we scarf that down... so as usual, I've gone off on a
tangent... never was very good at sticking to the subject...

The Junior Gyrene remembers some things well. It was a given
that most of the electronic goodies purchased in the 'Nam
somehow were disappeared before departure. Especially those
purchased in 'Nam, never opened, and immediately shipped home.
There was one way to avoid this. The air corpse had what was
then known as the PACAF Exchange Service mail order catalogue.
Bought several items through them and lo and behold they arrived
at home before I did and intact. Shipping wasn't all that much.
I'm not sure whether the light fingered persons in the postal
forces in 'Nam were service personnel or indigenous employees.
And to think of some of the things that were sent through the
mail in those days (must have been before UPS broke out of the
Pacific Northwest).

Thank you Gary LUCAS ('57), for telling us about Howard's
passing. Sunny OGSTON Anderson ('57-RIP) told me that you and
Howard were her good friends in D.C. and that you helped her
through some very trying times. I remember Howard's beautiful
singing voice and that he was a cheerleader at Carmichael. We
lived in the same area and briefly had a neighborhood science
club. It looks like he took his interest in science all the way.
I am so impressed with what he did with his life!

Re: Reddy Kilowatt (NAB) etc.
When I was a kid I did get a big kick out of Reddy Kilowatt. I
think he was on all my parents' electric bills. When we drove
through a town I would keep and eye out for him. There was a
Reddy Kilowatt neon sign in Walla Walla I always looked for.
Then he sort of disappeared. I guess in the '70s instead of
trying to get everyone to use more electricity, they were trying
to get everybody to use less electricity. Just like in the
'70s they were trying to get everybody to build houses with
fireplaces, then in the '80s they were telling everyone they
couldn't build a fire in their fireplace because it caused
pollution.
I too bought a Vietnam lighter, and it is not a Zippo. I think
it is a Nippo; that's a Japanese copy of a Zippo. (Credit for
that one goes to author Sol Weinstein's hilarious parody of
James Bond--Hebrew Secret Agent Israel Bond (code name Oy-Oy-
7)). I was turned on to him by a Jewish shipmate of mine
although I have only read "Loxfinger" of the four books in the
series. I also bought a Korea lighter and I don't know why I
bought them because I have never been a smoker. I guess I just
wanted souvenirs.
I bought a gold ring with a black sapphire supported on each
side by gold maple leaves in Bangkok. I sent it home to my
girlfriend (later wife), and of all the stuff I sent home, that
must have been the only thing I did not insure. Home on leave I
asked her how she liked it and found out she never got it. It
was probably on the finger of some mail clerk's girlfriend.
I had a 3" reel-to-reel tape recorder a friend bought in Vietnam
and sent to me so we could exchange letters on tape. I think we
each sent one tape. When it was my time to go to Vietnam I took
it with me, I think I sent one tape home and never got any back,
so next time on leave I took it home and put it back in the
original box and it has been there ever since.
On my third and last WestPac (Vietnam) cruise my wife
(girlfriend mentioned above) sent me a box of stuff for
Christmas. It got to me late, I think after New Years Day. The
individual presents were gift wrapped so they were OK, but
there was a can of caramel popcorn and the lid popped off so
everything was incredibly sticky including even the inside of
the Christmas card. It was a fairly large card folded like an
accordion. It was such a neat card I didn't want to throw it
away so I wrapped it up in paper and kept it. Among the stuff
she sent was a shirt that was white, pink, and purple striped
with a pattern in the stripes, tan/gray corduroy pants that went
really well with the shirt and a pair of purple sox. (Hay, you
got to remember this was very early in the '70s) That crummy
old oiler I was on then was more lax on the dress code than the
heavy cruiser while we were at sea. One day we were all gathered
in the main radio room with the Chief sitting at the one office
style desk that was in there giving us all a lecture. This is
the guy who reminded us that radio was a secure space and we
were not allowed to have cameras there. All the while his camera
was sitting right there by him on top that desk. I was wearing
some non-regulation gold sox and the Chief told me I was going
to have to stop wearing those @#$%* %$, $@^# %$ sox. Unbeknownst
to the Chief, the 1st Class Radioman who was sitting in a chair
next to the desk was also wearing gold sox. He started goofing
off for the rest of us acting like he was pulling his pant legs
down to cover his sox. Probably a good thing no body LOL ed.
Later on when I knew the Chief would not be there and the 1st
Class RM was; I put on those purple sox, went upstairs and right
in front of him put my feet on the table so he could see my
purple sox. I think he laughed so hard they could hear him all
the way from Radio to the Engine room.

So I gotta call from Paul TAMPIEN ('64) a couple a hours ago
leaving St. George, UT. Ray STEIN ('64), Jim HOUSE ('63) and
Denny NALDER ('65) have spent a bit a time there for their
"elder gentlemen's" B-ball championships. I've yet to make it to
the games but one a these days, by golly... so Paul and Sally
will experience some of the most fun and the very worst of a
trip from Utah to Vegas... the trip thru the Virgin river gorge
(hee hee I said virgin) is wonderful and I just love that part
of the trip to Manti for the Rat Fink Reunion, which I'll be
making again inna couple of weeks... but once you hit Arizona
and Nevada it is the very longest, hottest and most desolate
stretch there is... makes the Mojave seem like an oasis...
almost every year coming back from Manti, we experience record
breaking heat coming through there... two of us are taking
roadsters again but this time I have a "Biker's mask"... last
year after 5000 feet I couldn't believe what I was feeling...
took my nose and lips 3 weeks to heal... not agin that's fer
sher... This is also the time of year that 3 '65er dudes and the
Bomber-babe who was my first date inna world could have a small
reunion just for their b-days... I can't say enough about these
kids... they have been a part of my life for so very long... one
of them since before we started school... I still have a belt he
made me in crafts class at Col-Hi, but I think it might fit
around my leg now... boy I musta hadda skinny waist back then...
musta been when I was built lika Marine Poster boy... as if I
was ever built lika Marine Poster boy... I went to Vietnam with
a kid like that... I look at the picture of us leaving that day
and we all looked pretty darned "Gary SETBACKEN ('64)", but this
kid was a perfect triangle with little or no neck (no not with
the pointy part on top)... wow... looked a lot like HEIDLEBAUGH
('65) looked outa boot camp only taller... so, as usual, I call
all but one a these kids 'cept one I don't have a number for...
one will be fishing, one will be doing some kinda "officiating"

Re: Jackie and Larry's Fireworks and adventures
For Several years now Jackie has maintained a blog of our
activities.
Our latest fireworks effort was an addition to the annual demo
of consumer type fireworks for Jake's Fireworks. His brands are
"World Class" and "Cutting Edge". Both are superb in bright
colors and great activity.
The Jake's 7 Western States Distribution Center is at Winlock,
WA [a bit south of Centralia]. Every year at this time Jake
Marriott (no connection with the hotel chain) flies out here
from the Kansas HQ and they stage a demo for all the dealers.
After firing 94 of their top items for the demo Jackie and I
were invited to use Jake's consumer products and stage a short
display as a finale to the evening. Jackie is an artist at heart
and it just may have been one of her finest efforts. Part of the
equipment for firing this finale was my new three position
trailer firing platform. It worked perfectly and all the crew
were pleased to use it. We actually fired from 13 positions.

Re: Passing of Sister Vincent Mary (RIP)
Sister Margaret Graziano (Sr. Vincent Mary), age 97, died at the
Marie-Rose Center at Mary's Woods in Lake Oswego on May 11,
2014. She was a vowed sister of the Holy Names for 77 years. The
Mass of Christian Burial was held on May 21, 2014, in the
Provincial House Chapel. A memorial service is being planned for
early June in Eugene, date and time to be announced.
Sister Vincent Mary taught at Christ the King when it first
opened in 1954.

All right people, let's get with the program here. It is not fun
to check the old inbox to find yet another "Not" issue of the
Alumni Sandstorm. I mean, come on, two in a row! Two in a month
is bad enough, but two straight days of "Not" shows a lack of
interest on the part of many. My excuse is that there are any
birthdays of those I know on the calendar, nor are there any
historical/histerical issues to be resolved.
Let's face it, even as incomprehensible (sometimes) as the
Junior Gyrene's reminiscences can be, they are somewhat readable
and do take up space.
And what has become of the adventure's of Pappy's elves and/or
dogs?

ATTENTION!!!
I want to mention something that happened yesterday early
evening here in Spokane. I almost killed a young boy about 8 -
10 years old.
I was driving on a street (Washington Ave.) at about 32 miles
per hour heading home at about 4:00 in the afternoon.
Two young boys were playing around and one of them pushed the
other one who jumped into the street to get away. The problem
was that he ran right in front of my vehicle and fell down. I
slammed my brakes on and stopped just about 2 feet in front of
him. I really almost hit the kid. I just sat there almost in
tears and was very unsteady. The boy was okay. He was also
almost hit by someone else. I sat there and just shook for a
couple of minutes. If I had been just a little less attentive,
I would have run into and over him.
I still haven't gotten over this. I don't know if I could have
ever gotten over it if I had hit him.
Parents! Please let your children know that playing on the
sidewalks can be very dangerous.
Car Drivers! Please realize that being inattentive for even a
second -- That includes talking on your phone -- EITHER TALKING
OR TEXTING -- COULD CAUSE SOMEONE TO BE KILLED.

Things have been a little slow in here lately, so I hope you
don't mind the plug!
Friday, June 6th I'll be part of a BIG show at the Pasco Red
Lion. The Corvette Comedy LaughFest will take place in a BIG
tent out in the courtyard. It's in conjunction with the Corvette
Club... I believe there will be over 200 Corvettes in the
parking lot. This benefits Make-A-Wish. The show is 4 headliners
that I hand picked (I picked myself) and 3 of my best buddies in
the comedy world. Dwight Slade, Auggie Smith, Kermet Apio and I
are each doing about 25-30 minutes and then we'll all come back
out and sit on stools Blue Collar Comedy Style and take
questions and tell stories. It'll be a great show, lots of fun,
lots of laughs. I hope to see some of you there.
Tickets are only $10, I have no idea why they set the price this

I agree with Mike CLOWES ('54), how can it be that TWO days in
a row, nothing was written into the Sandstorm! How can that be?
...with all the Bombers out there, surely someone has something
interesting to tell, on a daily basis... it's sad to open the
Sandstorm and find that there weren't enough entries for Maren
to publish anything for that day. I love reading what David
RIVERS ('65) sends in... his memory is amazing and his humor is
so much fun to read, too... love how he deliberately will spell
words wrong... am sure the "grammar nazis" have a fit, but I
love it... brings a smile, and that's a good thing.
I have wondered about Pappy SWAN ('59) and the adventures of the
elves and his dogs, too... those adventures were so much fun to
read... could "see" all the exploits of those elves... come on,
Pappy, surely those "little people" have been creating enough
havoc, so that you could write a "book" on them. *grin*
I do have some news... my son-in-law has taken a job in the
Boise, ID area, so we will be moving... the company he has been
working for is being sold, and no guarantees that his job would
be secure, so he sent out "feelers" and took a job with Idaho
Power... he would have preferred Northern Idaho, but nothing was
available, so he took the offer in the Boise area. he has to be
to work, this Tuesday... the rest of us will follow, once the
house is sold. I am looking forward to being where I can
actually have FOUR seasons, and also SNOW... he was told that
the climate/weather in the Boise area is comparable to what the
Tri-Cities gets, so am jazzed about the move... my daughter
isn't so sure that she is going to like living where it gets
COLD, she "freezes" down here, but my son-in-law keeps assuring
her that a "dry" cold is different than a "wet" cold and she
won't "feel" the cold as much as she does here. hardest part is
leaving my youngest daughter and grandson... have never lived
away from them, so this is hard, but it's ONLY a 13-hour drive
and my oldest daughter has said we will come down OFTEN so that
is helping... figure we will come this direction, every 6-8
weeks. AND, it's only about four hours from the Tri-Cities, so
will be close to my family, once again.

Sunday before Memorial day started out normally... Over the last
few weeks the Shore Patrol Wagon, Paddy, 1 ea., had been
permeated with an awful stench of rear end fluid... I mean
really awful... now don't you believe those adds where they put
blindfolded people in a room filled with zombies and garbage...
Fabreze does NOT get rid of all smells... I tried and tried...
so the other day my buddy and I were doing some 220 wiring for a
new compressor... I looked under the car (actually didn't hafta
look at all) there was a puddle of goo under the right rear of
the Shore Patrol where there was nothing above it to create the
puddle... I opened the back doors and oh man there is was... a
bottle of rear end oil tipped over and dripping it's obnoxious
contents all over the box I keep filled with stuff like that and
all over the back of the vehicle... nasty, nasty, nasty... so I
planned on cleaning up the mess and then checking a power valve
to see if it was causing my excessive fuel consumption... two
simple straight forward jobs... but after finishing the clean
up, sitting enjoying a well earned ciggy-butt, an
overwhelming... (that is almost too mild a word) urge came over
me... I got out my box of stencils ( big box full of many other
boxes of all sizes of stencils) and made groups reading "FREEDOM
IS NOT FREE" and sprayed the message on the open radiators of my
"Chesty" Henry J and my '27 Roadster... .at first I was very
disappointed... I couldn't read the signs when they were
finished... as I walked back a few feet to get some black paint
to spray over them I turned and saw that just as in real life...
.that concept can be difficult to fathom... but as I stepped
back I could read the messages loud and clear... I was simply
too close to see the message for the blurs... .Today, I wish to
celebrate the birthday of a very special Bomber-babe... but it
is also a day to let my brothers and sisters know that they are
WELCOME HOME. Many of us were not welcome when we came home...
some still do not feel they are welcome nor do they feel
comfortable here... when I got home I hated it... The "Big PX"
was not the Disneyland I remembered... much of it was that I was
not the same and never would be... I wanted to scream and much
more... a couple of days into my new duty station I requested to
go back... I mean the thing I had NOT wanted to do when I got my
Orders to Vietnam, was now the thing I was asking to do again!
My friend Magoo, was in the first class of SEALS and spent 4
full years in the jungle... I can't say it did a great deal for
his people skills, but dang man... that'll do something to a
guy... Terry DAVIS ('65) thinks Magoo is about the coolest thing
since shirt pockets and I gotta say I agree... but he sure ain't
the kid that posed for the "Gung Ho" T-shirt stencil when Big
Daddy Roth did it back inna '60s( enclosing a picture NOT
POLITICALLY CORRECT AND NOT FOR THE SQUEEMISH... not zakly the
original... Marine Corps wouldn't let him use their name back
then so hadda call it "Gung Ho...

It would be years between the first time I saw that Gung Ho T-
shirt and I would meet Magoo and become close buds... then, of
course there are all those who never came home physically or
mentally... I have worn my POW bracelet for many years... since
they first came out... the kid on the bracelet was lost his
first day in country when his Company was over-run with no
survivors... he was lost on May 10, 1968, the day before I got
home... I can never say "Welcome Home" to him or those who were
lost with him... Terry did the narration for a film called
"The Man Left Behind"... Greg Tomlin, the kid who directed and
produced the film has won many awards for it. He first met Terry
when he wrote and sent letters to Terry while "Tour of Duty"
was still being filmed weekly... I am not sure they actually
met until he asked Terry to narrate the film... doesn't really
matter, Greg wanted to take his Dad, who had never fully
recovered, back to Vietnam as sort of... hell I don't know as
sort of what... He wanted Terry to go, but as usual, Terry
wouldn't go unless David went and David wasn't goin' back to no
freaking vietnam no how no way... I wear a t-shirt that says:
"Vietnam sucked when I was there; bet it still does; 1967-1968"
If you get a chance to see the film you will understand your vet
friends a little better... maybe... so now I've kinda mucked up
the joyful HB for the b-day Bomber-babe... this was spozed to be
full of all kindsa anecdotes showing what a great babe she is...
oh well... she knows she's loved and appreciated as that go to
Wild Child that let's us all use her place every Cool Desert
Nights during the '65er gathering (which is coming up starting
June 19th in just a few weeks boyz n girls... HAPPY BIRTHDAY,
Cecilia "Ceci" (dunno how she got that name... thank Ellen
WEIHERMILLER ('63), Mary Lou WATKINS ('63), Leo WEBB ('63) and

I have found, with age, that the cold in the Tri-Cities isn't

Classmates, another reminder to get your information in to me
for our booklet and funds for group photo and misc for our
60 Year class reunion.
Time will go by so fast before we know it and we don't want you
left out!!
Saturday, September 5, 2014, we will meet at the Richland
Community Center from 1-3 PM. A group photo will be taken about
1:30 PM. This will give us some free time to visit and have some
snacks with our friends. We have some great door prizes and
souvenirs, so be sure to get your tickets at the door. Then we
will have dinner with Club 40.
Friday and Saturday nights we will have a special area of
seating for our class at Club 40 in Red Lion - Richland, so we
can have appetizer and dinner together. It won't be as easy to
visit those nights as the noise gets a little loud, but we can
work it out!!
We are getting excited as we hear from classmates who haven't
been with us for as much as 10 years, so please be sure to make
contact. Even if you are unable to be here in person, we still
want to hear from you so the contacts can be updated.

Marilyn and I had a good time this weekend in Richland. We had a
nice cruise Saturday afternoon with 33 other Mustangs to Prosser
via Badger Canyon. We attended the Pacific Northwest Mustang
Club's Show & Shine at Howard Amon Park on Sunday.. I visited
with Perry MOORE ('63) and Roger GRESS ('61) - who won an award
for his cool hot rod. My sister Joan ('57) is home from hospital
and feeling better. Attended 80th birthday party for brother
Rush ('52). We beat the majority of traffic back over the
mountains. Looking forward to Cool Desert Nights on June 19-21.
Hopefully, buddy John DALE ('63) will bring his '55.

Lost an old friend last week. Don TWITTY, or "Tweety Bird" as I
liked to call him. He was my first roommate, introduced me to
soul music, Al Green, James Brown, Tower of Power, Aretha,
Marvin Gaye, Isley Brothers, Temptations, and all. We had some
classic hoops battles, Bomber road trips, all good times.
I lost touch with him until he showed up at our restaurant in
Seaside with his beautiful wife and daughter. He loved our
broasted chicken. Man could clean a chicken bone! Happy times.
When I moved back to Tri-Cities, I found him and renewed our
friendship... seemed like we were never apart. His music
collection was classic. Next thing I knew I had a Marvin Gaye
cassette tape from Donnie for the road..
Tweety was a brother from another mother to me. I will miss him.
Rest In Peace, My Brother.

Excuses excuses I gotta million of them... today it was just
one of those days... woke up to find my work computer had been
hacked and all files encrypted... ALL files... 20 years of
pictures and work gone... no I never bothered to back up the

bank and either I backed into a guy or he backed into me...
