Re: Radio stations
I worked for KPKW in Pasco Saturday mornings as an announcer the
summer after graduation. I went to Seattle by train to take the
required exam and got my third class radio license. I went to the
station a couple of days before I was to begin working to learn how
to operate the transmitter and console. My license didn't allow me
to actually turn the transmitter on, so we left the switch on and I
just plugged it into the wall socket. We signed on at 6AM. My first
day, all alone, I plugged in the transmitter. The fuse blew. There
was one spare fuse. The usual rule is, if a fuse blows, replace it.
If it blows again, look for the problem. I wasn't sure what to do ?
try to find the problem or put in the spare fuse. If the second
fuse blew, I had no idea where to go to get another fuse in Pasco
at 6AM. I replaced the fuse, and it blew again so I decided to
try to find the problem, then worry about getting another fuse. I
discovered a wire at the end of the electrical cord that connected
to the transformer in the transmitter had come loose. I found
a soldering iron and soldered it back to the transformer.
Fortunately, another employee had turned his radio on to listen to
the station, and when it wasn't on the air he came to see what the
problem was. He went and got some more fuses, and I finally got the
station on the air, more than a half hour late.
KPKW was an "easy listening" station, I think. We played light
classical and similar records. My favorites were the movie sound
track from "On the Beach" and music from the TV series "Victory at
Sea." We used a network feed for news. The station owner had us cut
out cigarette and alcohol ads and substitute local ads. That was my
first "real" job.

Cheers for the Cloud, as a counterpoint to the other wall design
given to the "Day's Pay" B-29. We can be proud of such restored
inclusiveness and balance between contesting school mascots.
[NOTE: Day's Pay was a B-17. Enola Gay and Bock's Car
were both B-29s. -Maren]
The mark of a really good symbol is that it bears multiple
interpretations for diverse audiences. Too bad that the Cloud looks
too much like an albino cauliflower and nothing more. Missed is the
opportunity to be more than graffiti. The design by the Class of
2014 might have included in some way the less specific and more
enriching original symbol of proud Richland as the "Atomic City" (a
nucleus encircled by electron orbits, and celebrated in the early
years' Atomic Frontier Days). Or, better yet, the Cloud might be a
bit more vertical so as to recall not only a new technology but
also the more historical smoke signals of Native Americans, even
demonstrating some respect for the 9,300 year-old Kennewick Man
found down steam and downwind along the, what, Columbia River?our
original namesake.
And, further, if the vertical bomb cloud took on the more accurate
shape of a top-notched column?sort of a question mark design?it
might signal the kind of genuine "teaching moment" that one might
expect at Col-Hi (aka Richland High). Inquisitive students might
then interrogate the enriched Cloud design to wonder at one of the
many zig - zaging disconnects that make up much of human history ? in
this case the disconnect between Truman's instructions that "the
gadget" (as it was code named) should be "dropped on a military
target," and the disconnected leadership initiatives that resulted
in 60,000 to 70,000 killed while taking out only 150 military
personnel (United States Strategic Bomb Survey, 1946). However one
weighs collateral damage and a host of other complex and fast-
moving factors, toward one conclusion or another, it is the act of
pausing and weighing that matters.
And one wonders how the new crop of students is being prepared to
pause and weigh the recurring intersection between tough
situations, politics, technology and morality in the 21st
century... Better than we were, one hopes, with our Col-Hi
government text book (Magruder, American Government) opining in the
Cold War '60s that the future of the world belonged to the
evolution of a hybrid middle ground between Democracy and global
Communism. So, I vote for the Cloud, but maybe today this symbol
actually refers to some kind of computer thing in the sky.

As my memory-like-a-sieve remembers it, when I was small (OK, I was
always small, but I'm talking about pre-school thru around 3rd
grade) KWIE in Kennewick had all the good programs: Uncle Ben, The
Lone Ranger, Dragnet, the Cinnamon Bear. Sometime later they were
bought out by KEPR TV and changed their call letters to KEPR, then
later still they became KONA -- all at 610. KALE in Richland
(although their facilities were actually in Pasco) was at 960 and
at one time had a "no rock-and-roll" policy. KORD (Kennewick?) was
at 910, but could only broadcast during daylight hours, i.e.:
sunrise to sunset, which meant that during the winter we could
hardly listen to it at all since we were in school for most of its
broadcast day. I don't remember KPKW at all, though it must have
been around unless several Bombers who mentioned it are suffering
from a mass hallucination. KONA and KALE are still around at 610
and 960 respectively. I don't know what happened to the other two
stations, but they aren't on the AM dial here any more.

I heard once (maybe on Sandstorm) that someone who lived next to
the lot didn't want to sell it and have any construction put up
next to their house. Hmmm Pictures were taken from across the
street in front of "Ray's Drug". Fred SCHAFER ('63-RIP) and I used
to stop there on our way home from Chief Jo in 1958 for cherry
Cokes, vanilla Cokes and some strange kind of lime drink at the
soda fountain. I believe there used to be a gas station on the
other corner but that memory is vague. Ask Ellen WEIHERMILLER
('63). Those were her old stompin grounds.

The Hyatt twins (Billy and Bobby ('63-RIP) lived right by Ray's
when they were going to Chief Jo. I remember going over to their
house and they and their dad would be polishing their shoes
together or they would have their fishing reels all taken apart on
the kitchen table and be oiling them up for a trip to the potholes.
Their dad was pretty cool.

the last scan showed that the cancer is getting smaller.. Praise

I was thinking the other day about some boys in our neighborhood in
the early '50s who I think moved sometime before graduation. Does
anyone know of the existence any of these kids? Just curious.

somewhere by the dike (Hainees?). Kenny died in 1984

Duane LEE ('63) mentioned the house next to the aforementioned was
owned by Mrs. Lucky who was at one time my English teacher a CHS
Columbia High School, and I thought the gas station across from
Campbell's market was a Flying A at one time. Also there was a
Flying A at the corner of Lee and Jadwin that was owned by Jeff
Darden who I believe was also a Bomber grad.

So as I understand it, the ground hog came out and declared the
ball wuz too deflated to play er sumthin' like that... yeah but
that's old news... today is the day many say the music died...
butcha see... music doesn't die... oh sure maybe in book "1984" it
died... but then we all waited for 1984 to happen and it was
pretty much like every other year... at least then... no further
comment... I remember back in the early dayz a rock 'n' roll, I had
this little short waive radio... Keith PETERSON ('65) and I would
sit and surf the stations (tho we didn't know we wuz surfin' at the
time) till we got us a rock 'n' roll song and we would just relish
the music... Buddy Holly became one of my first idols... I mean
Elvis was cool and all, but there was just something about Buddy...
later, I would be lucky enough to see Elvis twice a year on opening
night right at the stage... never seen anything like it and doubt
I ever will again... I've seen some greats and some close ta
greats... Even drank with Chuck Berry one night when I was sittin'
with Paul Revere and Mark Lindsay and Chuck... Chuck was buying my
wife champagne coolers er somthin' and the boyz 'n' me wuz relivin'
the days of the KISN corner in Portland... Chuck wuz a tad
surprised when my wife left with me... but earlier, the music was
truly magic... nothing like it in the world... The post about one
of our local stations having a no rock 'n' roll policy didn't
surprise me much... some girls weren't even allowed to go see Elvis
movies... the music changed my life... what could be better
than' sittin' listening to Gene Vincaent and his Blue Caps, Eddie
Cocheran, Link Wray, Hank Ballard, the Clovers and the Statues...
The Robins and the Coasters... one of my favorite memories is a
bunch of us sitting in the swings at the park across from my house
when Stuart ZIEGE ('57) came south on Stevens and turned west on
VanGiesen winding up each gear and then letting the pipes rumble
(no not Link Wray rumble... the pipes) as he shifted into the next
gear with Finger Pippin' Time blaring loud enough to hear it all
the way to the Uptown... That Impala, those pipes and that music
took us to a wonderful land where we weren't just little Jr High
kid wanna be's... we wuz the real thing... Brian ('65) driving
his dream '59 Buick and the rest of us driving what ever ride
we happened to fancy at the time, as we raced from Richland to
Yakima... Jack MOOREMAN'S ('54-RIP) red '34 Ford coupe sitting in
his Mom's back yard was always one of my dream cars... I remember
after February 3, 1959, Tommy Dee would cut a record called "Three
Stars" about Buddy, Ritchie and JP... Eddie Cochran did a pretty
good version too... I remember Linster the Spinster ('57), with his
theme song "Straight Flush" by the Frantics playing Blue Velvet by
the Clovers and the Statues... I could never decide which was
best... I now prefer the Clovers... in those days the Real Don
Steele was second string to Lyne and moved on to Yakima, then
Portland at KISN, then L.A. and finally syndication... I have two
huge boxes of "Live from the sixties" in my garage, many of which
Michelle transferred to CD for me... I think each record holds 6
shows... great stuff with all the old commercials and stuff... I've
never learned how to use the machine that transferred the records
to CD and it is sitting over at Big Mike's... some day I'll get it
back and learn to use it... for me the music never died... it
changed while I was in Vietnam so I mostly listen to '50s on 5...
but it never died... When the preacher (who legend says was the
Killer's cousin, Jimmy Swaggart) made the famous statement about
"the beat the beat the beat, being evil" he couldn't have been more
wrong... we don't care what the people say ROCK 'N' ROLL is here to
stay... so Mama, don't make me hang up my rock 'n' roll shoes!

Re: Modern Vocabulary & Argument Vs. Invective
A few weeks ago, I received an E-mail from a fellow Bomber where he
described certain folks as being "mouth-breathers." Because I had
some knowledge of this Bomber and also due to the context in which
"mouth-breathers" was being used, I was pretty certain this was NOT
a compliment. Nevertheless, although I had previously heard the
term, I really didn't know the origin of the word or its true
complexity. Ultimately, after quizzing a half dozen of my above
averagely literate friends without finding an answer, I resorted to
googling the word. According to "UrbanDictionary.com," a mouth-
breather is "someone who lacks enough intelligence that they never
learned to breathe through their nose." Now, if you find yourself
referred to in this fashion, you will know more precisely HOW you
are being insulted. (I suppose if you have a congenital or injury
caused nasal blockage, you may be thought of less negatively for
breathing through your mouth.)
Finally, I would make the following observation regarding the use
of personal invective (insult). When people find themselves on the
losing end of an argument/debate, they will often resort to this
tactic in an attempt to marginalize their opponent. (For example,
if you're a "mouth-breather," nothing you say can be of any
importance; right??) If you pay attention, you may be surprised at
how frequently people do this. When you find this technique being
used against you, just know that you have already won the debate
because the other side is out of logical/intelligent response.

I worked at Densow's Drugstore part time from '60-'62, and again
'63-'64.
Yes, Evan Lytle was a great pharmacist and nice person. I knew him,
and his wife and kids, Vicki ('69), Denny ('66), and Jil ('82)..
They were next door neighbors to my cousins on Birch Street when we
were growing up.

Re: Pennywise Drugs on Thayer Dr and Richland Laundry and Dry
Cleaners, Richland Lite Opera and Village Players
I had my first job in Richland at the Richland Laundry and Dry
Cleaners owned by the Stollers. At the same time I worked at
Pennywise Drugs on Thayer Drive as a waitress. Many Col-Hi students
have worked at both establishments.
Best memory was of Gene BARFUSS ('54) sleeping in a laundry cart at
the Laundry. Best memory of Pennywise: I served a banana split to a
customer without the banana. The customer never noticed until I
retrieved the errant concoction and put on the banana making it a
true Split.
Fun days in Civil Air Patrol, dancing in musicals with the Richland
Lite Opera, performing in plays with the Village Players and Camp
Fire Girls, all this during the '40s and '50s. The enrichment
experiences offered in Richland at that time was outstanding, made
available thru many talented teachers and leaders such as; my
mother and father Jim and Virginia Clatworthy, Vera Edwards, Mr.
Duncan (sp), Gordon Pappas, Jean Smiset, Jane Johnson, CAP teachers
& officers, H. Stell, Ms. Ellis, and Mr. McGrath. Oh yes, I forgot
the square dancing teachers in the early years at one of the
elementary schools. We did it all.

I am eating fast food while waiting to get my tires rotated as part
of getting things ready for our trip to Florida next week; and
you'll never guess where I'm eating: an A&W root beer place,
Wasn't that the name of our popular drive-in in Richland during
high school? I remember lots of friends worked there as carhops,
but I made more money working year around part time at Densow's ,
so I missed my chance to have that job. I'm having a diet rootbeer
float and a cheeseburger. does rootbeer have caffeine? I forgot to
ask.
Well, we did get a little of the white stuff, but with the sunshine
our roads are fine, but it was 12° outside, so it looks nice, but
it's cold outside. makes our Florida trip even more inviting.
We'll have invited our exchange students to our church this Sunday
and we have a dinner for them and their families afterward in an
attempt to get to know them and make them feel welcome. We expect
10 exchange students from all over who are living in this little
town of Hope, a town of about 1,000.
I guess we do this partly because I loved being an exchange student
so much.
I wonder how many exchange students are at Col-Hi now? We usually
had 2 most years I remember. my 6th grade teacher, Clair Karlson,
had a German exchange student come to talk to our class, and that
was when I decided that was something I'd like to do, and I worked
at CUP church making and selling fruitcakes to help raise funds for
our International Christian Youth Exchange Students for all through
high school, and maybe in jr. High too, before I finally got
selected to go, all I remember is lots is Saturdays were donated to
fruitcakes, and we saved and collected lots of coffee cans.

Re: Wuzn't we brung up different?
Maybe it's just me. I was brought up to obey certain rules whether
I agreed with them or not. If I disobeyed them I KNEW my butt was
inna sling... end of story... so if there was a rule that I could
not go swimming until 1/2 hour after lunch I knew I couldn't... now
maybe most of the time we'd be ok if we went in... but the rule was
made to protect the municipality which owned the Big pool from
liability AND to protect me as well. So does it bother you as much
as it does me to see this ad... for a car (I think)... where the
kid looks at the posted rule... then at the life guard and jumps
in anyway... then the ad goes thru all this garbage about the kid
going to jail, being a big story in the news and on and on... fade
back to the kid coming out of the pool where Mom meets him (Mom's
way too busy to watch the kid herself while he swims... she's got
portant growed up stuff to do)... Mom asks if he broke the rule
again, he nods his head and she just beams at her little angel in
praise for being a rebel (I say a little sh-t myself)... what the
heck does that have to do with anything they are selling and what
does it tell kids today????? OK maybe it's just me...
Do songs put you back in the time and place you were when you
were first listening to them? They do me. Today I was working on
something and Theme from a Summer's Place came on... I was right
back at noon dancing... OK maybe that's a Chief Jo thing... Wailers
songs put me at Hi-Spot... no matter the song, I drift right back
to those days gone past when I was tooling the Uptown or Zip's with
that special girl... oh come on... I know I gotta rep but you
should not be thinking" yeah right... special girl... for that
moment"... be kind... as Thumper's mom said "if ya can't say
anything nice... don't say anything at all..." Oh Donna sees Tony
HARRAH ('65) and me walking into our first Col-Hi mixer... .
Anyway, I do love time travel... one a my favorite things!
Now for the portant stuff... today is one of my favorite b-days...
I have come to know this guy better over the years and as I say
every year admire him greatly... he is really one of the good guys
even if he is kinda related to Ricky WARFORD ('65), I don't count

Hello fellow alumni - long-time reader, first-time poster.
Reading talk of the green beverage that used to be served at the
drugstore soda fountains over the past few days brought to mind a
Bomber-related story from my time in Mr. Harbour's Advanced Biology
class, first day of the school year, circa 1980:
Sitting on the tall, black-finished laboratory bench at the front
of the science room upstairs in Mac Hall was a clear glass beaker
containing a cloudy, bubbling green solution. Occasionally small
dark objects within would rise to the top of the liquid and then
dive for the bottom.
Shortly after the bell, the murmur of voices subsided as the
teacher, Mr. Harbour entered the room and introduced himself. He
was a tall man with bushy dark eyebrows and a serious demeanor. He
went over a few classroom basics and then started describing the
mysterious liquid. He had our full attention. The liquid, he
declared, was nothing other than Yakima River water, and the dark
objects within were organisms that went up to the surface, obtained
oxygen, and then brought it back into the water. By this process,
these organisms were actually purifying the water to the point that
it was safe to drink.
And to our amazement, he then proceeded to pick up the beaker and
DRINK the now-purified (but still green and cloudy) river water,
organisms and all, eliciting gasps and groans from the rapt
audience!
He put the beaker down, looked around the silent classroom, paused
until we were all just about falling off the edges of our seats
wondering what would happen next, and then he finally shouted out
words to the effect of: "WAKE UP! ASK QUESTIONS! Don't believe
everything that you're told!"
We were all looking at each other in amazement, most of us having
never experienced this kind of thing from the teachers in our
lesser years. The lesson taken from this episode has vividly stuck
to me to this day.
The mystery solution in the beaker was the soft drink Squirt, and
the organisms were black raisins. The carbon dioxide bubbles would
catch in the wrinkles on the raisins until they floated to the
surface where the gas bubbles detached, letting the raisins fall to
the bottom to repeat the process.
Mr. Harbour ('55) was one of the many great teachers I was blessed
to have at Columbia-then-Richland High. Yes, I was there when they
changed the name and there was quite the uproar about it at the
time. The oft-used reasoning was that there was also (and still is)
a Columbia High School in Burbank, WA, and we certainly did NOT
want to be confused with them!

Re: Fatalities in Alabama Pyro Facility Explosion
Several Alums have emailed or called me wanting to know if I knew
about it. Actually I know very little about it.
I belong to a private pyro network (restricted access) that has
members around the world in many countries. We are in near constant
touch. The explosion happened about 10:20 AM local time. It was on
the net around 11 AM.
I don't know any of the details as they are under investigation. I
know a couple of people who work at that company but not at that
facility. There were 2 fatalities, one apparently in the blast and
another died from burns. Several other workers had various burns
and injuries.
Years ago it was owned by a friend of mine and I spent several days
there learning more about some advanced Special Effects (SPFX). A
note came across the net yesterday saying the incident happened
while mixing chemicals. I cannot verify that. Beyond that .. no
details as an investigation is in progress.

We are a fairly small and closely knit industry. It is always
sobering to hear of injuries or loss of life.
After several years of not going, Wed Jackie and I are off to
WinterBlast at Lake Havasu, AZ. We fly into Las Vegas and rent a car
for the 2 1/2 hr drive. It runs Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat and this year the
last night public display in Sunday Night. Seating and parking is
tight... anyone wanting to see some great fireworks needs to get
there early.

when there are no SS entries... with alla kids we got from our
school seems we'd have tons of entries every day... Apparently my
computer got a virus the other day and people were getting all kids
of stuff from me including invitations to "skype"... sounded dirty
but nobody took me up on it... like the other day I was driving a
tail draggin' custom '37 Plymouth and some guy pulls up and says...
"Nice car... betcha get the chicks with that... "I said I might of
30 years ago! My 928 GTS will be headed for Florida in an hour or
so... that car has been a blast... but I kinda outgrew the need for
it... like Rolex watches... the day I retired I stopped wearing them
and have been wearing my USMC issue watch ever since... now they
just go round and round in little rotating boxes to keep them
oiled... I gotta say that between the deal my buddy gave me for one
of the last three new GTSs inna world and the price I got, I drove
that car for about $1000.00 a year... not too shabby... it was a
rare car so I wasn't gonna give it away... the guy buying it has an
exotic car store in FL and has wanted one to drive... he sounds
more excited than I did the day I got my first 928... drove to a
meeting and couldn't figure out how to unlock the doors when I got
there... a Lawyer I worked with when I clerked in Law School had one
and I knew that was the car I wanted... when I got this one, Porsche
had stopped making the 928 and I said I wouldn't buy another new car
till I found one I liked as much... Ellen WEIHERMILLER ('63) will be
the first to tell you I've never bought another new car since and
don't plan to now... so next time we meet at Mary Lou's ('63) I
won't be in a "normal" car... Life's way too short not to have fun
and way too portant to take seriously... the other day we were
talkin' about important dates... we all agreed there are really only
2... 16 and 21... after that it's pretty much "been there done
that"... from there we just move forward to that last inevitable
road sign that says "STOP" or "DEAD END"... so make the most of it
while we can... ain't no yesterday worth regretting and tomorrow
never comes so alls we gots is now... if we remember that instead of
fretting about what coulda been or what might be we needs to enjoy
alla good stuff inna middle... I spent most of my life either
regretting or worrying and it sucked... Doris Day got it right when
she sang Kay, Sarah... (never figured out why she kept agreeing with
Sarah)... what will be will be and for the most part it's gonna be
no matter what I do or don't do... had a Partner who was a total
control freak... figure Tums made a fortune off a him... Terry DAVIS
('65) always laughs about how calm I am inna group... it wasn't
always that way... at 17 I was at Jansen Beach and I saw this Squid
leaned up against the wall... smoking and totally cool... I wanted
to be that Squid (well not a Squid but you get it)... he had a
little buddy who was all animated... for most of my life I was the
animated guy... always reminded me of a cartoon I once saw with a
too cool for school Bull Dog and his little yappy buddy... I was
the yappy little buddy... now I ain't sayin I don't believe in free
will... I'm just saying Kay Sarah... well let's get to it... HAPPY

Holy heart shaped candies!, Batperson, it are Valentine's Day.
That means that many years ago, in a land not too far away, Skippy
and Clarence got married. I know for a while they resided in a
trailer in North Richland. What a lovely way to start a marriage.
But it work, through thick and thin, they are still together. I
wish them all the best and hope that they don't eat too much
candy.
He wouldn't admit it, back in the day, and he probably would have
been laughed off the Colt 45's. None the less, today is his
birthday, and since he is getting along in years, he has had to
give up his horses. Guess he's not only too old, but getting
weaker as he is unable to carry them. I guess a tip of the ol'

I have, on loan, an aged Selectric II Typewriter which I
need very much to do some work on my genealogy. (Long carriage)
I had a flood in my basement and did a LOT of damage, and some
of my genealogy work (done lovingly and painfully with a manual
typewriter with a long carriage by my hard-working Mom), was
damaged, and I need to redo some (a whole LOT) of the pages.
When I got the loaned machine, I was thrilled. Then I went to an
office supply and got some new ribbons, and the little white
correction ribbons. (Hard to find. Who would have thought it?!)
I spent years working, thrilled to have one of those to work
with. Now... Is there anyone out there that knows how to make it
work? I turn it on, and it sounds like a key is stuck...
(Familiar sound.) But... I can't figure out what it REALLY means
? and how to fix it. Anyone have any suggestions, or, I live in
Richland. I've asked around, and no one professional that I can
find who does that. I figured I'd be able to do it as that
typewriter had been my mainstay for over 15 years.
I'm sending this now, although I'm about to depart for Hawaii
with two of my daughters, the trip being a Birthday Gift from
my kids!!!! Leaving here this coming Friday, and be gone for a
little over a week. I've never been there, and they gave me this
Surprise Birthday Party 10 days before my big date. It was in
the Grange Hall in Kennewick, and they got me there on pretense
that my granddaughter wanted me to attend a M.S. meeting with
her. We opened the door, and about 102 people, kids, grandkids,
friends, nieces, sister, some ex's, several great grandkids, and
two now-grown (no longer kids) both had lived with us for
years!!!! (One from Snohomish, the other from Walla Walla) I
hadn't seen either of them for years. They took dozens of
photos, and we had a blast, kids cooked up a big feast, and I
can call it the greatest event I've ever had. They gave me an
envelope that announced my forthcoming trip to Hawaii.
I know that there has to be Bombers who can make a car go longgg
past it's prime, and can build vehicles out of parts, and
electrical, and other mechanical and technically mysterious
things. My husband, Doug, could do all that, and I miss him a
lot (he's been gone since 2010, RIP).
As I said in the "subject" line, HELP!!!!! Thanks.

Then, early afternoon I received an answer, from Spencer HOUCK

on typewriters... That was very fast. So glad I could get such a
quick turn-around about it. He will be coming by to look at my

so helpful. Maybe next crises I have I can do it that way, only
quicker. In case this loaner doesn't get better and over its
problems, anyone have any ideas of where to find a long-

It is with great sadness that I write this missive to inform our
Bombers, mainly class of '58, and all who knew, worked with and
were friends with him that Brian went Home to be with the Lord
on February 5, 2015. He was laid to rest on February 9, 2015, in
a private graveside service. There is a guest book on the
Einan's site available. There will be an obituary coming in the
paper sometime this week. I have known Brian all of my life as
we grew up in the same neighborhood through childhood. Brian was
one of those fortunate Bombers who got to live in the same house
in that same neighborhood until the day he passed. RIP Brian and
God bless you. I know that you will be sorely missed by many. My
heartfelt sympathy, prayers and love go out to Brian's family.
God bless them. I would also like to request for our large
Bomber family, and those who know our Bombers, to please pray
for those Bombers out there who are suffering through the many
things that we human's do, that they find pain-free peace and
know we love them.

Hello All---
Earlier in the week I was noodling around on Facebook (comme
d'habitude) and saw an entry from Melissa Kelly, Joyce's
daughter. She ended with "RIP, Mom." I guess it showed up on my
feed because I used to get an occasional note from Joyce. It
took until today to get any more info from her.
Joyce died LAST YEAR in Phoenix on March first! I had no idea.
Melissa said it was a blood clot to her lungs that was the cause
of death, but that Joyce had advanced lung cancer, which she hid
from her family. Her husband Billy was heartbroken but has
continued to do his "work camping" gigs that they enjoyed doing
together. He spends summers in Colorado, Melissa said, and
winters in Arizona. They lived in Vancouver, WA, for years and
years, but I don't know if they moved from there to Phoenix or
if they were just there for the winter. That's actually all the
details I have. There is an obituary on file in the Vancouver
Columbian (!), but it gives few details.
Tough to be the bearer of bad tidings, especially when it's an
old friend from that long ago. I do hope the rest of us are all
doing well. We are, and we're still gloating over not having any
snow.

I trust you all have had a wonderful Presidents' Day. I remember
back in the day there at least three celebrations in February:
Lincoln's birthday on the 12th, Valentine's day on the 14th and no
school on the 22nd (at least in the State of Washington) - wonder
if they still do that. And now we come to "Fat Tuesday" or Mardi
Gras as it is known in some quarters. Around here and in Bavaria,
its called Fasching and in Rio its known as Carnivalle. Just brace
yourselves for Lent.
In other places it is known as Curt DONAHUE's ('53) birthday. So, a
tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a hearty "Happy Birthday!" to

EVERYBODY READY???
Lack of snow has forced the official restart of the 2015 Iditarod
to Fairbanks. Since the ceremonial start is in Anchorage on March
7th, everyone needs an extra day to get to Fairbanks for the
restart on Monday, March 9th.
What NORMALLY happens is the ceremonial start is the first Saturday
in March... (this year March 7th) then the official re-start the
following day (Sunday). HOWEVER, the Iditarod trail Committee has
moved the re-start to Fairbanks after concluding that there isn't
enough snow on the traditional route this year to maintain safety
for mushers and dogs.
The 2015 route is 979 miles.
The traditional Southern Route (odd years) is 998 miles.
The traditional Northern Route (even years) is 975 miles.
Mushers draw for starting position on March 5, 2015.

It is with sad heart that I tell you that my brother David passed
away Sunday morning, 2/15. David had been diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer in October. He didn't want to go through chemo therapy and
radiation, so he fought it with faith and letting nature take its
own path.
There will be a memorial service in Moses Lake, WA on Saturday,
February 28th. When the final arrangements are made, I will pass
those on.

Been one a them dayz where I started out great guns and then just
petered out into a nice nap... dunno why some dayz are just like
that... I mean it ain't like I just laid on my butt all day...
hmmmmm well maybe part of the day but not all day... watched a
great movie about the Court Martial of Jackie Robinson last
night... had no idea... ah ha... and there's the reason... when I
go to bed way after mid-night I tend to be a bit lethargic the next
day... and got up at 5 a.m. and went to donuts Saturday, stayed up
late and stayed up late last night too... ahhhhhh I'm not good
fer nuthin' and lazy after all... dang if only my dad could hear
that... today's B-day guy comes from the class of '57... now I
gotta say... the class of '57 musta been a great time to grow up...
haircuts were of two major brands... duck tails and flat tops...

picture over and over... ... I can just see the guys in the barber
shop picking number 7 and 12 (I can't really remember the little
poster on the wall I'm faking it)... the owners of two of my

Carol has gone into Hospice this week.
We just returned from a wonderful fun 10 days in Florida, and I am
now making plans to get out to spend as much time with Carol as I
can, as soon as this frigid weather in the Midwest breaks, which
will probably be this Friday.
So please direct prayers for Carol, and her husband, Gary (who is
having a hard time with this) and her son Brett who very kindly
took Carol's phone to call anyone on it who he thought might like
to know.
It's very hard for me to face losing CArol, but I know she is
walking with The Lord, and that makes it easier to bear.

Gary BEHYMER ('64) posted a picture of this chair on Facebook
and wanted to know if any other Bombers from the class of '64
remembered them... my grandmother had them, plus the drop-leaf
table and the hutch... there were six chairs... my youngest
daughter has this entire set now except I kept three of the
chairs... the set originally belonged to my grandmother (my mom
and dad bought it for her)... after my grandmother passed away, my
mom took it back, then gave it to me, now my youngest daughter has
it... has to be more than 60 years old... the chairs are covered
in fabric, am thinking my mom more than likely made the covers,
since the wicker wasn't that comfortable to sit on... this picture
started a good discussion among some alumni from the class of '64.

According to several sources, today is the birthday of a Bomber
Babe from The Class of '54. To the best of my inconsiderable
knowledge I do not think we "interfaced" (as they say today)
during our high school years. I was, however, aware of her, but

alum and deserves some recognition. Accordingly, I will now tip

it'll be last night and well... ya know... ) I was just sittin'
'round wudn't doin' nuttin and right there on National news came
the words: "Richland, Washington"... my lil ears perked up and
sure enough, there was Barronelle Stutzman (a Bomber?), the
owner of Arlene's right there on TV with her attorney... holy
mackerel... not sure I've ever seen that before... nothing about
Hanford... just Richland... so it got me thinking... He coulda
been a contenduh... now for those of you who were there and those
who weren't (I am sure Dean HOFF ('62) was there) go back with me
to the year... uh... uh... oh poop... I may hafta get in touch
with David BOWLS ('58) to go back into his receipt box and lemme
know when I got my car painted... I'm sure it was painted when I
hit Zip's that memorable evening... along with a few of the usual
suspects... now just because Bob didn't lemme date his daughter,
didn't mean he banned me from hangin' out... so there I wuz...
truly wadn't doin' nuthin' of any import 'cept maybe eating fries
and tarter sauce... someone bet Lew LLOYD ('62) he couldn't go up
the hill, race down and do the Zip's circle at oh say 50mph... the
money was on the line... not sure who held the 50 cents that was
bet... up he went... down he came... and CRASH... right thru the
front of Arlene's... Ralph LEE ('63-RIP) pulled him outa the car,
took him home and then began loudly querying "does anyone know who
stole Lew's car?" None of us did... the trick did not work and
soon the local Fuzz wuz banging on Lew's door... the rest of us
moved our cars kinda drive in movie style and aimed them across
Zip's up Lee hill and turned on the lights to watch the rest of
the extraction of that beautiful Crown Vickey... Had he just
waited 51 years or so... He too coulda been on national TV last
night... well, he coulda... so what does that have to do with

That was one of the more memorable (to me any way) episodes of The
Beverly Hillbillies. I remember seeing it when it first aired. Saw
it again a few years ago. For some reason a kangaroo was shipped
next door to Banker Drysdale's house and got loose. Granny keeps
seeing it and thinks it is a giant jackrabbit. No one else ever
sees it and Jed believes Granny has been drinking too much of her
rheumatiz medicine so he keeps trying to find where she hid her
jug. In this picture Miss Jane had been trying to get Jethro to
kiss her. However, not really understanding what she is saying,
when Sharon Tate comes in he picks her up and kisses her instead.
As I remembered it Miss Jane is pointing to the door kicking
Sharon TATE out, but it looks more like she is kicking Jethro out.

I cringe a bit when the Oracle ('63) sends me an email that is
titled "Blew it again, Rook"... Oh I mean if its just to let me
know I missed Bobby Goldsboro's demise I can take that in
stride... I'm sure I was somewhat of a fan in the day and I know
while I was in Australia I enjoyed the song "Honey"... but I think
he ranks up there FOR ME with Bobby Vinton... I know I know some
of you think Bobby Vinton invented "Blue Velvet" but Lynner the
Spinner ('57) taught me mo betta with the Clovers and the
Statues... but when Jimbeaux scolds me for missing the Ever Young
and Lovely's birthday, I take that very seriously... now there are
few b-days I have committed to memory... most of them belong to
Bomber-babes who have last names beginning with "W" (there would
be seven to be exact... four from the same famblie) and one is the
Ever Young and Lovely... now truth is when ya spend as much time
in jammies with a Bomber-babe as I have with the Ever Young and
Lovely you tend to remember such things... I dare say I believe I
have probably even kissed her in a moustache... but then I've
kissed Mary Ann WEILAND ('63) in a moustache without the
jammies... no I mean she wasn't wearing jammies... no wait... ah
crap... so maybe that doesn't count... I dote on this babe to the
extent that I even gave her a wonderfully beautiful umbrella at
Pook's ('63 RIP) memorial that she has been trying to get rid of
ever since but just like that "song" the "Thing" by Phil Harris
(that they play endlessly on '50s on 5 and why I have no clue...
get outa here with that boom boom boom) nobody will take it... So
there are several Bombers who I put on my cheat sheet with just a
little reminder instead of full name and class year... the Ever
Young and Lovely is one of those... in this case I just put an
"N" and a very small "n" at that... well, I was so busy trying to
remember the year of the Arlene's "crash" and Barronelle METCALF's
('62) maiden name that I didn't even notice the little "n" on the
cheat sheet... now to be perfectly honest, I did check before I
went to the coast to make sure I could do the post for the Ever
Young and Lovely when I returned... I confirmed I could... I even
called Kippy Lou ('62) on her special day knowing she never uses
email and doesn't read the Sandstorm so it isn't that I wasn't
aware... I was just in Richland back in '63 or so... and almost
failed to return like the time traveler in the series 12
Monkeys... ah geez this is not helping very much... all I can say
is Nancy WICK ('65) I was very much aware of your birthday and
just screwed up!!!!! For the next five years at Christmas, when we
do the grab bag, even if I pull out a solid gold diamond ring, you
can snatch it away even if it isn't your turn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I get a huge kick out of watching the efforts of today's High
School Students and the way that great educators help them to wrap
their arms around today's technology. My granddaughter Jessie
Wymer is a Freshman at Shorewood High School in Shoreline
(Beaulieauville), WA. Jessie has quite a Bomber lineage in her
pedigree as her grand parents include Mary WINSTON Wymer ('55),
The Forever Young and Always Lovely Miss Nancy ('65) and good old
jimbeaux ('63). She's passed the Spudnut test more than once and
could be "One Fine Bomber"
I've shared this video from her High School with several of you,
but thought everyone might enjoy the production done in part to
show off their new school (thanks Pete for those tax dollars). It
was filmed backwards and Jessie shows up in a green tee-shirt
about 1:30.

Well, I didn't get an email with that subject line so I guess I'm
on the hook for a nuther whole year... I kind of stepped in it
today with a post on Face Book... I was trying to set forth the
law as I believe it to be in a case that involves one of our
Bomber-babes and instead invited a heated round of exchanges where
Mary Lou WATKINS ('63) actually resorted to calling me a ring
tailed tooter... perhaps I'll refrain for a while... I had no
intention of creating a situation where people's heart felt
beliefs on right and wrong were made the issue as opposed to the
way the law is intended to work in such situations... I guess
that's why friends, even Bombers should heed the warning don't
discuss politics or religion... I will be very careful of using
the phrase "lighten up" in the future!
On a happier note, there is a great photo making the rounds that
should be shared showing Bomber Spirit... I am enclosing a picture

history, Dick ROBERTS ('49) and Carol TYNER ('52) got married.
They are nice folks, and I wish them all the best, and maybe we

screen to keep track of important dates. I must admit that I
believe I forget one year, but made my apologies the next day

Re: Quick trip and fireworks
At the last minute Jackie and I decided to go to Winterblast. The
pyro version of "Spring Break".
We used some mileage for seats on Alaska Air to Las Vegas. I
showed my special card (there is a story about the card for
later) from Budget and we were off driving to Lake Havasu City.
Fortunately some member had room he did not need and we got it.
The city was full for several events and there were NO rooms
available.
A friend of ours is new to the pyro business and after selling
his life business he retired to do pyro. So we gathered group of
friends and in 2 days started from scratch and set up his display
using 500 multi-shot devices. These were single effect devices.
That means all of the either 12 or 16 sots in a given device
were the same. Normally that would be a bit boring. But not if
carefully arranged. After the fireworks each night we spend a
couple of hours working on a beer keg and talking fireworks.
Monday after the Blast we mashed the throttle and hot footed it
to Algodone,s Mexico and made it in time to get measured for new
glasses. Thanks to Gus KEENEY ('57) for the kind loan of a bed for
the night we were off to pick up the glasses and get back across
the border and drive the near 650 miles back to Vegas as we had 7
1/2 hours to get there. The speedo in the car went to 160! Nah...
I did not dare to try it. But hiway 95 was deserted, flat and
straight. Suffice to say we made it with time to spare. Jackie
did not even get nervous. So I will take that as a compliment.

Near the bottom of the page is a place to click on and see the 5
minute display we cobbled together. A friend designed it, but
Jackie and I gathered a crew and got it set up and ready to fire.
You will see me sitting in a chair as my new knee was not ready
yet, and any other position is/was quite painful. But I cannot
work pyro and drive taking pain pills.

Hey guys,
I've been thinking about this for awhile, and I think that I'm
going to join Betty McELHANEY Hudspeth ('57) and Brad UPTON ('74),
in bailing from the Sandstorm subscription list, but for different
reasons. I feel as though what a lot of subscribers want, is to
simply relive the "old days", and avoid any subjects that might
stimulate thoughts or emotions about stuff that is going on, right
now, that have a direct impact on our lives, as they are now.
I loved my days, growing up in Richland, and going to school
there, but my Life didn't end back then, and going over and over
and over those memories is just not what I choose to spend
whatever time I have left, doing. I had my second brush with my
own mortality last year, and once again it was brought home to me
just how valuable our short time here on earth is. . .
Motorcycles, music, writing, and now "new" hobby (photography)
keep me in the here and now, and I don't want to miss a minute of
it; I have already lived the past.
Just sayin', and I don't mean to give offense to others who don't
feel the same! "Live long and prosper!"

This is NOT real. It is high tech, expensive, software
designed to simulate display fireworks.
It is used to develop choreography programs for
displays. There are 3-4 brands of this available, some
much more pricey then others. Some is too fancy and far
from the real appearance. I have a version of it called
Finale in my computer. Current price is over $1000 for
all sections.
I mostly use it to get the timing right with a music
program. When you want a comet to rise with the rise in
the music or a shell to open to a word in a song. I
recently used it to set the timing of the rise of
comets across the sky to a point of music.
If you open the Jackie's blog if us at Winterblast
there is a place to click on that will open the finale
program used to sim the display we set up and fired to
music at Winterblast.

It is indeed too bad to see some folks "unsubscribe" and "let
their feet do the talking" with regard to participating in
Sandstorm. Right off it needs to be clear that Maren is in no
way at fault, and is pretty much caught in the middle.
As I understand it, the basic premise for this newsletter is to
exchange friendly info between alumni. Any "political" discussions
are not allowed, but most anything else is o.k. within the
boundaries of normal decorum. Therein lies the "rub". Late last
year there were some entries about welfare issues... some folks
declared this a political issue, and it surely can be said that
there is a political component to this subject. There were some
strong statements that one of our readers took very personally.
To some extent, the validity of the viewpoint that discussions
of welfare issues "politics" is debatable. To me, the issue of
welfare is to a large extent a moral issue - so even in that
context, there is some disagreement on the definition of
"political".
Anyhow, some "bad blood" was generated, and the fallout seems to
continue. For my part, I prefer to try and live by this old adage:
I may disagree with you, but I will defend your right to say what
you believe.
It seems to me that we should all try a little harder to be less
"thin skinned" when we have opposing opinions on issues.
One reader recently complained that Sandstorm is becoming a dull
and not-too-interesting forum. I rather agree. I tried 2-3 times
in the past few months to generate some discussion about the "old
days" at Columbia High, and some other discussion about the
"modern day" Tri Cities. Scant response happened.
I too sometimes tire of seeing just a few folks submitting the
"same ole stuff" about birthdays, anniversaries et al... but they
are certainly appropriate for this forum, and probably not boring
to some folks.
So I will continue to read this forum pretty much daily, and try
to participate in a wholesome and hopefully interesting way.
My hat is off to Maren for keeping her "cool" and keeping this
forum alive.

I don't know who all would remember Mrs. Huske. She worked at
Jason Lee in the cafeteria in the '50s thru '70s. She was the one
who had the bright red hair. She lived behind the 7-11 on Wright
Street, on Humphreys. She was a neighborhood fixture. Kept watch
and nursed all the kids for blocks around, including myself and my
siblings. I grew up (part of growing up) with her son Richard ('61).
My sisters with her other sons John ('58-RIP) and Vern ('56). She
also has a son Mike ('64). She was red haired almost to the last.
I saw her last when her son John passed away, and a few times
after that. She never forgot our family. We were all part of her
"neighborhood family".
I want to tell all the Huske family how much she is remembered and
loved. She was a big part of early life.

So, as for stuff with an "impact" in both the past and "here and
now", let us celebrate neighbor Ed back in the eighth grade, for
example. On one occasion you came to the busy halls of Chief Jo
with a giant purple blotch against your shoulder, giggling in your
unique way. Rabbit hunting in the sage brush. Forgot to brace the
weapon securely against the bod and the high-impact kick left an
impression. And, weren't you also the farsighted one who stepped
on a hiding Jackrabbit's tail, such that it jumped right out of
its skin? Another memorable impact! The same year, I think, your
parents (both excellent nurses) carted you off to have a doctor
drill into a boil compressed under your fingernail. The pressure,
you bragged, sent a stream clear up to the ceiling, and then there
was the scream...
It's just impossible to forget the Ed QUIGLEY phenomenon. May you
continue. Talk to us. Are you still doing the troll thing living
under the Tacoma Narrows Bridge? Tell us a bit more about your
current writing and new hobby of photography? Sunsets, birds,
flowers, sage brush landscapes?

Dear Alumni Sandstorm:
Most of you will not understand what the death of our State
Auditor has to do with the Alumni Sandstorm. Let me explain.
Last night, when I found out this great man (a Rep. running for
Governor of Missouri and well liked by both R + D) committed
suicide over a whisper campaign by the Chmn. Of the Republican
Party in Missouri. Imagine my shock, after telling Mike ('60) last
night, I thought it could be that he was really Jewish and not
Christian when I read in a Post Dispatch editorial this morning,
that, that WAS possibly the reason he took his life. I had not
known any of this, as his was always portrayed as a lovely
Christian family, but he looked Jewish to me. He was well known
for doing an excellent job at whatever he did.
One of the signal memories of growing up in Bomberville was an hr.
long discussion/argument with a very smart, articulate fellow
Bomber, Peter Baugher ('63) over religion when I was a junior in
high school. It was my first experience of arguing religion with
a Jewish person. I was dyed-in-the-wool Christian, but he was the
first person to begin to open my mind. So when we moved to St.
Louis and Mike took a job in a Jewish/Christian company, we were
to experience something we hadn't before. We developed special
bonds to the Jewish faction and I subbed in many Jewish dental
offices. I developed a deep respect for how hard they worked,
their intelligence, and their acceptance of all kinds of people.
Our Jewish friends always had Mike's back at work. You do not
forget that... ever.
The shock of finding I was right this morning, prompted me to be
thankful that I grew up in Richland. To be thankful that we never
had knock-down fights over religion while I was growing up in
Richland like they did here in St. Louis. The subtleties of race
and religion may be lost on those who have never lived outside the
PNW, but they are huge elsewhere. The fact that politics can be
so mean as to cause a man to take his life because his grandfather
was Jewish just upsets me beyond words. We all need to back off,
of the cruelty/Untruthfulness that seems to permeate our politics
lately. But, I am grateful for the Peter BAUGHERs in our lives who
open our hearts and minds to different ways of thinking and I have
missed him at our reunions. I am grateful and wish I had told him
how much I think deep discussions are healthy for thinking and
changing our world for the better.

To my fellow alums thinking about opting out of the Sandstorm:
It is a rare thing to belong to any group without some
disagreements. Regardless of what groups we join, there will
always be differences among members. However, we are all RHS alums
and have unique memories. I have actually gotten closer to some
fellow Bombers over the years. It is great when Bombers lend their
support when we face challenges such as family health issues, as
an example. In short, stay the course, not because we all think
the same, but because of that bond that you will not likely find
anywhere else. Thanks again to Maren for herding the cats. I don't
always read each entry, just as I don't always look at old photos
of my kids. It is nice to have them when you feel in the mood.

Why is it that some people will say how much they have enjoyed
reading the Sandstorm for many years, but one little thing comes
along they don't agree with and they fold their tent. They seem
to be saying that 99.9% is great, but that 0.1% is a deal breaker.
That is like if I went to the car dealer, they offered me a brand
new Cadillac for $500 and I say, "Nah, I don't like it that they
took the ducks off the shield." (emblem) How does one get through
life without coming in contact with people they disagree with?
I am a pretty easy-going guy, I don't go out looking for a fight,
but I have run into people I disagree with in school, military,
church, work, whatever, and I expect some day I will be buried
near someone I could not agree with on the color of an orange.

You said your new hobby is photography. I have been interested in
photography since Jr. High and even have an enlarger and other
dark room equipment I will probably never use again. I just
recently dug through boxes and boxes of old pictures, scanned
them and put together a slide show for my mother-in-law's 100th
birthday party with pictures of her in her christening dress up to
one taken the day before on her actual 100th B-Day. It was shown
on a digital picture frame and on a TV in two different rooms at
niece's house where the Saturday party was, and on a projector at
church for the Sunday party. Most photography we do is so we can
remember the moment, or to share the moment with others.
I had a Canon FT SLR for many years and could do all sorts of
things with it. I recently acquired a Nikon D3100 which is far
superior to my 10 year old Fuji digital camera. Now the camera
will do all sorts of things, but I need to hire a Jr. High kid to
come along with me to show me how to use it. Mostly I just leave
it on automatic and hope for the best so far.
I find it interesting you ended your post with "Live long and
prosper!" then within hours I hear breaking news that the actor
famous for saying those words has died. Maybe you really are in
the future.

Not sure I understand why some are deciding to "opt out" of the
Sandstorm... my understanding of the reason for the Sandstorm was
to discuss our memories of Richland and/or Col-Hi and reconnect
with old friends, who we may not have "found" any other way. I
realize that some of us enjoy a "good" debate, but the Sandstorm
was never intended for a political forum... we had the Sandbox for
that and we also have other venues for those discussions... Face
Book is one that comes to mind. *grin*
I don't write in all that often... don't always have something I
think others would be interested in reading, but I LOVE reading
the entries... will admit, even though I probably shouldn't, that
there are some that I skip over, as the content isn't something
that interests me, but for the most part, I read every entry.
I just hope Maren never "tires" of her duties, as I would miss the
Sandstorm if it were to disappear.

Editor in Bomber-babe has requested that we refrain on the more
provocative subjects in our posts, for good reason... sometimes we
forget ourselves and can get downright nasty and disagreeable. I
remember well when the Sandbox was invented... it was getting
worse than a bar fight between a buncha squids and the Few and the
Proud... notta pretty sight... it got damned ugly... worse than
ugly... now the Editor in Bomber-babe didn't sign on to do two
Sandstorms a day... We are the ONLY people I know of (tho I do
not doubt that the other two secret cities may have something
similar) to have a daily Alumni paper where we Bombers can keep in
touch... it is about the coolest thing I've ever heard of and I'm
not all that easily entertained... I am the first to admit that
there are kids out there from my class and likely others who
consider me a perfect A-hole. I'm not perfect nor am I always
right... in fact, every single day after saying my prayers and
meditations... I mean right after, I catch myself taking the
tooter far too seriously... I gotta think... If my little feelings
are hurt, what in MY behavior is wrong. I don't wanna see ANY
Bomber leave this forum because of something that was said. I
especially don't wanna see anyone leave because we can't get down
and dirty... we got lotsa places to do that... we don't have to
agree alla time... but here, we need to be civil and if that means
we can't say everything on our minds sometimes I can certainly
live with that... we learn through disagreement... and for that
let's go outside this lil gem of ours... My daughter's restaurant
gotta 100% bill of health from the health department the other
day... she said "Dad, we can't be perfect, how do we improve if we
are perfect?"... I'm thirty years older than she is and I'd never
heard it put so well. The other Day, Betsy FOX ('63) put her
position to a question I posited in a FaceBook post about as
eloquently as I've ever read... but if I hadn't read it, I'd have
missed all of the points she made... right forum... right place
for us to argue... When I saw that "Em" ('52) and my ol' friend
Q ('62) were dropping out from "boredom" I took it seriously...
I mean I met Em quite a while back and found her to be just
lovely... Q is the first Kadlec baby in history... man we don't
need to lose people like that and we shouldn't... we shouldn't
lose anyone because it's too nasty or too boring... it's a great
means of staying in touch... .Well, that's how I feel anyway...

Re: Politics and Me
I may have shared my childhood stories and a bit of my adulthood
about living in Richland. Stories after I left. Stories when I
came back... and left again. I have never 'relived' my past in
here. Have fun trying to do that!! I believe we started out by
simply telling short stories of our lives in Richland. People we
know/knew. Where we went if we did leave. Our parents, teachers,
children, grandchildren. Notable automobiles. Many of us putting
our story in here for the many reasons we did with a touch of
trust. Opening up at times for vile scrutiny from others when
we actually believed we would be treated in an atmosphere of
'confidentiality' due only to the fact we are all Bombers. Be
careful with what you assume. The brotherhood and sisterhood.
Love. Prayer. Happy Birthday. So many good things have by far
outweighed the bad. The details of an individual's history of
Richland before the bomb(s) and since. An ongoing story and I
still enjoy reading them.
The old Col-Hi and Richland High School still exists in our
hearts, minds and today. They are one in the same. I have heard
FEW stories from the alumni from the years 1980 to today. I have
read many from the 1930s to 1979 and there are many that still
have not penned their thoughts for whatever reason. I am waiting
to hear from the 1980 to 2014 grads. I want to hear about their
keggers, where they had them... is it still possible to have
them... and etc., etc. etc., etc. Those who believe the '30s
through the '70s is the story of Bomberville is sadly mistaken.
Anyone who wants to use this site for their propaganda constructs
and governmental 'truth' is a long way off the Alumni Sandstorm
trail. Use your local newspaper to spew your political views. Make
your own website for the like-minded. I do not even care what your
political view is. Wrong place. I can read about politics online
every second of the day until I drop dead. I vote. I have little
use of ever hearing anyone's political views in here because it
causes me PTSD. If Maren allowed it, I would leave. I'm sure
nobody would even notice I was gone because there is only going
to be about ten to twenty of you left in the Alumni Sandstorm
attempting to put your ball in the other's court with your
political views. Haters are going to hate.
Politics almost got me killed in 1968 when I was 18 years old and
killed several Marines I actually liked. I think of those Marines
on an almost daily basis. Like when I wake up every morning and
ask myself, "You still here?" I am an eighth generation American.
My family has been shot up on many occasions because of
Republicans, Democrats and other political fanfare. I could go on
and on and on, and sometimes do, about it. And to think that my
decision to join the Marine Corps as my father did before WWII
so not to be drafted into the Army... that I could have been a
Canadian divorce lawyer... therefore, I repeat, my take on your
all knowing, skewed, fanatical political views is to take them
elsewhere. I won't even say good-bye.

Thank you, Maren, for keeping the AS real and as clean as you have
accomplished with a few bumps along the way. How you do it is a
mystery for myself. I have too much anger and a low tolerance for
a lot of reasons that I have yet dealt with. Probably the reason I
live alone.
