So glad you were interested in looking up my little brother and talking to me. I thought that was what this sandstorm was all about... and am glad for it. I don't know what anyone has a problem with... guess I missed that one. -Shannon CRAIG Hightower ('50) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Dave RHODES ('52wb) Hi Maren I am sorry that people have become so narrow minded that if people write things they disagree with they are dropping out. I often times have read articles that I did not agree with, but I also believe that those persons had the right to their own opinions. I recently paid my next years dues and I intend to continue as long as I am still alive. My good friend and classmate Dick WIGHT ('52) and I do not always agree on things, but by golly we are still friends and I hope that we always will be. I only attended Col Hi from 1948 until we moved away in June of 1950. My happiest and most fun times were when I lived here. I was one of the so-called trailer trash from North Richland. Our fathers were heavy construction workers and as their jobs were finished we moved on. My next stop was a little railroad town (Wishram) where my stepfather took a permanent job with the SP&S Ry Co. The school there was so bad that I was sent to Stevenson, WA to live with my Grandparents. I worked there all the summer of 1950 as a section hand. One month after school started my Grandfather was transferred and I lived with a family where I was treated very well. I need to backtrack a little bit. You see I had been nearly beaten to death by my stepmother, so I came to Richland to live with my mom and Stepfather as a ward of the court with the stipulation that I had to live with a family member. I finished my junior year at SHS (Stevenson High School) and my sister accidentally told my Stepmother I was living with a Foster family, and the court sent me to Renton to live with her and my Dad. The day I graduated I left them and went my own way. This is probably not very interesting unless you had the same experiences. I am proud to say that I am a Bomber. GO BOMBERS. -Dave RHODES ('52wb) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Curt DONAHUE ('53) Re: Biggest Giant, Cliff Thompson Some days ago I wrote about this over 8-foot man, Cliff Thompson, being at the "Y" Grocery Store when I worked there. He was selling replicas of his wedding ring for fifty cents and I bought one, but have lost it in the many moves. If you bought one of them, he gave you a little booklet that told all about him. That I still have. I felt like a really small child working around him all day that day he was there. About two years later, while I was going to school in Portland, OR, I saw him drive by in a 1948 Dodge Coupe. It looked like he was sitting in the back seat, his seat was so far back. It was specially modified for him. Maren found the following - everything that's in the little booklet - on the internet: http://www.sideshowworld.com/41-GG/65-C-Thompson-A/CG-Cliff-Thompson-ABC.html Thanks Maren for all you do!! -Curt DONAHUE ('53) ~ Pasco where the sun is shining brightly **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Sara Ousley, aka Ann BISHOP ('56) I guess I'll throw in my "opinion" of the latest events. I agree with most of the others that the AS is NOT the place for true political discussions. Some of the entries are "boring", but most are not. I didn't have the advantage of growing up in Richland. I tell folks I grew up "everywhere west of the Mississippi" and that is mostly true. When I was 5, I'd had a birthday in 5 different states. Col Hi is the ONLY school that I spent more than a few months in and that was for 2 years and 9 weeks! I went to as high as 5 schools in one year, from the ArkLaTex to several schools in Washington. My mother was rather strict, so I wasn't allowed to go to the "hang outs" enjoyed by the rest of you. Because of that, I never had any long time close friends. You are all so blessed. So, that being said, why is there so much hostility among us? No two of us are always in total agreement... not even among CLOSE friends or family. Why can't we just get along and tolerate/embrace our differences, grow from them and enjoy the things we do agree on and the great, funny and sad memories we each have? I don't personally know 99% of you... just 2 or 3, but through the AS, I have become familiar with a lot of you and prayed for all who asked for prayer. I guess I'm kin to what is called a 'prayer warrior' in my Christian circles. I find most of the entries informative, entertaining, funny (i.e. 'tooter') and sometimes sad. Those I have no interest in, I just scroll through. No biggie. I, for another, am sticking with the AS. Thanks Maren for your mighty efforts. O.K., so I'm off my mini soapbox! -Sara Ousley, aka Ann BISHOP ('56) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Ed QUIGLEY ('62) Re: Subscription. . . Wow; seems as though I unintentionally tweaked a couple of people, but I'm happy to see that it inspired a few entries! Let me set a couple of things straight: 1. I DO appreciate all of Maren's hard work, and have told her so. I helped set up a free, Mac-specific, free help website, along with 16 other people from all over the world, back in... immmm... 2003(?); it took us about 8 months to get it up and running, and for the next 7 years, I spent 2-4 hours a day doing what Maren does. At the end of the 7 years, after a year of dealing with the back-biting and political intrigue that erupted amongst the administrators, I bailed. I'm happy to say that http://www.techsurvivors.net continues on, to this day, but without my help. So, yes, I know well how much work she puts into it, and how much time it takes out of her life. 2. My decision to suspend my subscription has absolutely nothing to do with be offended with anything that anyone has said (I firmly believe that being offended by someone is a matter of choice!), so it's not a matter of "taking my ball and going home", nor have I been bored with the Sandstorm. As a matter of fact, I have found myself, in the last 24 hours, questioning my decision, because I too, have made a couple of friends that, was I not a subscriber, would not have. I miss Pappy's entries (what a great imagination!), enjoy Larry MATTINGLY's ('60) entries (man, I wish I could play with fireworks that big, and get paid for it!), and many others' who keep us up to date on what's going on in their lives, so, who knows, I may change my mind and be back, but I'm glad that with that last entry, I sparked some more activity here! :) -Ed QUIGLEY ('62) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Duane LEE ('63) Re: Bomber Hoops Decades ago there was a fan at the Bomber basketball games who would stand up just before the tipoff and in a big, booming voice would proclaim "Gooooo Yeeeee Bombers". This would be followed by a loud cheer from the raucous Bomber student section. He was great. There is a guy who is doing it now also. I don't know if he is a relative of the original "crier" or just a loyal fan carrying on the tradition but it is a welcome part of each game. Richland put on a real clinic in the second half of their game with Kentridge tonight [2/27]. The Chiawana gym was packed! Landon Radliff, the team spark plug, pumped in 28 points. Re: New 12 Plex They are building a 12 plex theater in "Richland" since we haven't had one since the Uptown was shut down. The theater will be located across the Yakima on the border of West Richland but still technically in an expanding Richland. There was yet another move to change the name of West Richland to Enterprise but was shot down because it would be cost prohibitive. Re: Hanford High Our grandsons attend Hanford High. It is a great school and they have a lot of team spirit. It just always seems strange to me to attend their sporting events when they play their big 4A cross town RIVAL Bombers. Re: Spudnuts Had to stand in line outside the Spudnut shop today for 10 minutes just to get in the door but the wait was worth it. Hope that place never shuts down or goes hi-tech. Re: Original '63er Last but not least, a big shout out for Maren and the job she is doing every day. Thank you from all of us. She really can't help being such an over achiever since she is claimed by one of the best classes ('63) to ever come out of Bomberville. Keep up the terrific job Maren. We appreciate you. -Duane LEE ('63) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Bill SCOTT ('64) Hats off to Margo COMPTON Lacarde ('60) for defining the proper nature of the Alumni Sandstorm in yesterday's edition. She nailed it. Sheesh, as if there were not enough other venues on the internet for "thoughtful discussions". The problem with those is that they seldom stay "thoughtful" for very long. Sooner rather than later, in today's polarized society they degenerate into name calling, religious and political posturing, vituperation, and hate speech. There's already too much of that on facebook, which is why I seldom look at it anymore. Too hazardous for my blood pressure. I'm sure that isn't what facebook's founder intended. It has taken me a long time to realize how unique we boomer Bombers, who are the most frequent contributors to this venue, were and are. Not to brag, please don't misunderstand. But we really did grow up in Norman Rockwell's America, a place where you didn't need to lock your door when you went out on the town (we didn't), crime and homelessness were virtually nonexistent, and the schools were excellent. Perhaps the reason the boomer reunions are so successful is that for so many of us, our classmates are like an extended family. Why? Because most of our parents worked for the same employer, employment was stable, and so many of us went through school together from kindergarten through high school. It took me years to realize that you don't get that in other towns. I'd hate to see anything introduced into this forum that would drive a wedge between Bombers. I like the Sandstorm just as it is. Maren's done an incredible job of balancing all this over the years, and were it not for her, would the Alumni Sandstorm even exist? Let's keep it as it is, a refuge from controversial topics, where classmates can stay connected over the years, and talk about shared experiences and common memories growing up in a town like no other. -Bill SCOTT ('64) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Deedee WILLOX Loiseau ('64) Re: Opting Out Maren makes a good point: who wants to deal with the political stuff?! I'm as political as anyone else, but the place for airing my views is NOT the Alumni Sandstorm. We did have a "Sandbox" where we could write anything we wanted, but no one wanted to edit or handle it, so it died. If any of you "opting out" people want to take it on, do so, and quit complaining about what ISN'T in the Sandstorm as opposed to what IS there. I don't mean this to sound mean or nasty, but the Alumni Sandstorm has been operating for many years, and I appreciate Maren's efforts on our behalf. -Deedee WILLOX Loiseau ('64) ~ Burbank, WA where the days are warmer, but the nights still nippy. **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Jim HEIDLEBAUGH ('65) Re: Herding cats Hi Maren, THANKS for all you do. John C. said it right, "herding cats". Says it all. Great cats, and they are our cats. -Jim HEIDLEBAUGH ('65) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Mike FRANCO ('70) To: Donna BOWERS Rice ('63) WOW, so the Auditor of Missouri supposedly committed suicide and his being accused of being Jewish may have affected his political ambitions? And he "looked Jewish"? That's pretty interesting. And our family moved to Richland in 1954. As one of a very few Jewish families in town we knew the other Jewish families very well. If the Baugher family was Jewish I never knew about it. It's not impossible, but I am surprised to learn that. [and I had no idea the Franco family was Jewish till recent years of this Alumni Sandstorm... never knew it when your dad removed my appendix. -Maren] As far as political issues being surfaced here: I kind of like that this forum is relatively politics free. I read newspapers, watch news, read online journalism, follow financial issues, education issues and POLITICS is everywhere. I find that politics is not only everywhere but it often seems to carry a complete lack of civility. I welcome this forum being as free as possible of that discourse. After all, there is no lack of other sites and venues for any and all political discussion. Hope to see a few Bombers in Tacoma next week for some hoops -Mike FRANCO ('70) ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. Lively Sandstorm yesterday... I enjoyed it all. But I do suppose interest in the site will slowly fade away, since the "younger folk" who graduated after the 1970s rarely participate. I don't think it is a fault of the forum, but more of the communications technology of the time... all the internet- connected ways to rapidly communicate are more attractive to the younger folks... our "kids" and grandkids are all over Facebook and similar mediums... I subscribe to other online and printed stuff such as the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Alumni Assn. Nice magazine and online version, but the younger officers (the last 25-30 years) don't opt in to a significant degree... and the ranks of the older graduating classes are thinning.... Oh, well...dinosaurs like me will hang in awhile longer..... -Dick WIGHT ('52) ~ hanging on in Richland **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) No precedent breaking item to report, and hardly even controversial. The time is right to celebrate the birthday of a Bomber Babe and a Bomber. Now, I'm not going to say this is a May-December thing because I don't think they even know each other. For starters, she is a fellow classmate and he is a guy I met though Club 40. One thing you should know about her is that we went to school together, but not in the same classes. Didn't see her again until R2K. Following that, she did show up for subsequent reunions and occasional Club 40 Annual Meetings. Now we will tip the ol' propeller beanie and quite possibly shout our a "Happy Birthday!" for both Debbie HOLDEN ('54) and John ADKINS ('62). "Live long and prosper." -Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ Mount Angel, OR where we are back to sunny days and cool nights and not much snow in the mountains. **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: David DOUGLAS ('62) I love the Alumni Sandstorm. I don't think I've ever deleted one of them. Even though I just skim some of the birthday and anniversary greetings (unless it's one I sent, or for one of my friends), I do look at every one. I enjoy connecting with friends and acquaintances I haven't seen in decades (until the 50 year Class of '62 reunion). I've also made some new friends through the newsletter. I wish I'd discovered Sandstorm earlier than I did. I would like to have reconnected with my high school girlfriend Patty BEZZIO ('63-RIP), but she passed away in 1998 and I wasn't introduced to Alumni Sandstorm until 2000. Therefore, I'm requesting assistance of any of you, especially class of '63, who knew her if you would let me know how she fared her senior year and beyond, after her mother parted us. I've learned a bit about her adult life, but I'd like to know more about what happened her last year at Col-Hi. Thank you, Maren. You are greatly appreciated. -David DOUGLAS ('62) ~ Mesa, AZ where the temperatures are in the low 60s this week. Brrrrrrrrr. Can't wait for our pool to warm up **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Lynn JOHNSON Andrews ('63) Re: Donna BOWERS Rice ('63) comments about Peter BAUGHER ('63) 2/28/15 Alumni Sandstorm I remember Peter as a very intelligent and thoughtful person, interested in a great variety of topics. Once at Col-Hi he, Dianne KORNBERG ('63) and I were discussing religion, and he made the statement he believed that people had created God and religion because "they felt a need for them." I don't say this to start a flame war on religion, but to illustrate that he was a thoughtful person. Perhaps in his conversation with Donna he was being rhetorical, or playing devil's advocate? -Lynn JOHNSON Andrews ('63) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: they just keep a comin Well there's one thing fer sher bout Bombers... long as we keeps breathin' we keeps havin birthdays so let's keep breathin out there gang... today's Bomber has provided us with tons of music and pictures over the years to keep us rockin and to keep our memories green about good times at Col-hi reunions... hope it's not rainin up a storm there as it is here so he can go out and play... at least till the street lights come on! I agree with several other people... I am a political junkie and have my very own soap box. And a very late Happy Birthday to Kippy Lou BRINKMAN ('62) (sorry I don't remember your married name, Kippy). While I was I. Florida earlier this month I saw a "blast from the past"... when I was visiting Joy Hendrix Wilson (NAB) who I had met in Richland in '63 after I returned from being an exchange student Joy showed me an autographed copy of your album "An Evening with Kippy Lou" with a very young smiling Kippy (with your harp) on the cover. My husband and I had visited you once at the Dome of the Sea I think it was called, so I had seen you perform there, and I was so proud to know you. A Happy Memory. I hope Ed QUIGLEY ('62) comes back to the Sandstorm, as I'll never forget when he wrote in years ago that he was sitting in his island yard watching whales go by, and I wondered why I had ever let my husband talk me out of going to Seattle with Boeing for his job, because as much as I loved California there is no whale watching around Sacramento, and whale watching is even less possible in Cincinnati!! -Helen CROSS Kirk ('62) ~ Hope, IN where we had about 6" of snow on Saturday night; church was cancelled, but our roads are clear, so I've got to get to the store 12 miles away from this dear little town to buy some "greens". **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Pete BEAULIEU ('62) To: Lynn JOHNSON Andrews ('63) Your comment on the thoughtful nature of Peter BAUGHER ('63) could actually start a "flame war on religion." To help deflect such theater on these pages, here's another recollection of neighbor Peter from down the street (Howell Street in the north end). Peter was one bright and thoughtful guy, with a ready smile, usually in a necktie. My most relevant recollection is his presence at a Christmas break party (1964 or so) in one of those large "S" houses on Harris Street facing the River. The place was crowded, and in the kitchen BAUGHER was cogitating aloud to his listeners as he glanced at the spice cabinet: "People say everything is 'relative'...but relative to What? Nutmeg?" Now that is a thought provoking question. As to whether or not it is man who invents God, to satisfy a need, this inverted notion has not played well under regimes set up by the devotees of Karl Marx--who famously said that "religion is the opiate of the masses," and then further announced on who does what: that "this question is forbidden to Socialist Man". Forbidden? . . . food for thought, today. The above comments are about a neighbor and about recent history (not religion as such). BAUGHER was the talk of the neighborhood as very well read in philosophy well before he got out of high school. Does anybody know where BAUGHER is now? I have long wondered about his career decisions and later whereabouts. In the 1980s I saw a name identical to his in a book review journal ("the University Bookman") but could not verify whether this was our Peter Baugher. -Pete BEAULIEU ('62) ~ Shoreline, WA **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Shirley COLLINGS Haskins ('66) Re: Basketball State Tournament ~ 3/2/15 Tri-City Herald "The fifth-ranked Richland Bomber boys basketball team (19-4) and the mid-Columbia Conference champion, will open against Columbia Basin Big Nine champion Yakima Davis Pirates (19-4) at 10:30 am Thursday at the 4A WIAA state tournament at the Tacoma Dome. The Pirates are a familiar foe not only because the two teams were rivals in the Big Nine and CBBN but also because they faced each other in the season opener, an 81-74 Richland home win." A number of us had first-year French in eighth grade at Chief Jo: All but me had committed to five years of foreign language by graduation, which was the requirement to get a language class in eighth grade at the time; I was there because my first choice elective, "General language," and the alternative/second choice "Latin," were full and the registrar moved me into French without asking - giving me one of the defining opportunities of my life to study under Mrs. Sonja Harmon (RIP) http://rhs63.tripod.com/63columbian/ss/143.html I wound up taking five years anyway, three of French and two of Russian (again from Mrs. Harmon). When I dropped in on the '61 class reunion to chat with Dave STEIN ('61) while attending the R2K+1 all-years gathering, my wife needed the restroom, so I showed her where it was. When she came out, she was amazed that I was among a half-dozen-plus of Sonja's former students, singing Russian folk songs she had taught us almost forty years before. Many of us kept in touch with her for the rest of her life, she was that influential, and her daughter Sandy (Sasha) ('62) wrote personal letters to us when she died, thanking us. Backtracking off the rabbit trail, we took second-year French in ninth grade, while Peter took his first year that same year, then he took intensive second-year French at (I think) the University of Chicago during the summer. He joined us for our third year of French as sophomores with Mrs. Compton. She was such a bad teacher that I was told some parents of students that year ensured the school board did not renew her contract. By the end of the year, Peter was so advanced beyond most of us that he actually took on some of the teaching, and did it well. The one good thing Mrs. Compton did was to include in the curriculum Le Petit Prince, d'Antoine de Saint-Exupéry ("s'il te plait, dessine moi un mouton;" "c'est trés estrange, le pays des larmes"). Another memory is the nearly monotonous start to the roll call during most of my Chief Jo core classes most years: "ANDERSON (Paul); ARMSTRONG (Phil); BAUGHER (Peter); BENNETT (me)"... Regards, ecb3 - from a 100-year record cold winter in central Virginia, where last week's snow is hanging on stubbornly as we sigh at a predicted new accumulation tonight of 1-3 inches, while being reminded to "spring forward" this Sunday. Check out a concept new to me this week, but intuitively sensible: "Meteorological spring". -Earl BENNETT ('63) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: What's this cold stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Davis Pirates - 59 The Bombers looked like they were sleep-walking for most of the game. They were missing both layups and 3 point shots and most everything in between. They had Davis in foul trouble throughout the game, but couldn't take advantage because of poor free throw shooting. Their team defense was almost non-existent, allowing Davis to drive the lane for easy layups time after time. The Bomber's shot selection was terrible. They were taking wild shots and shots under heavy pressure on possessions where they needed to be looking for a clean, open shot. And they were turning the ball over way too much. They were down by ten going into the fourth quarter, and things didn't look good. But then, for a stretch of two or three minutes on the game clock, they started playing like we expect Bombers to play. They started finding some open looks at the basket and knocking down a couple of three pointers, they played some great defense and got a couple of turnovers and all of a sudden they had tied the game up, and the Bomber crowd was going crazy. Sad to say, that was the end of the line. After that little burst, they fell back to all the same bad problems they had shown all the rest of the game and ended up losing by that five point margin. I hate to say it, but to be truthful, the Bombers didn't look like a well-coached, disciplined team. They just didn't look ready to play at a State Tournament level. Too bad, I really thought this was going to be their year to go all the way. Bombers will now have to win two games in a row just to finish in fourth place. Hope they can do it. -Dave HANTHORN (Gold Medal Class of '63) ~ disappointed here in Mercer Island on an otherwise beautiful day. **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Rosann BENEDICT ('63) To: Mike FRANCO ('70) A while back I attended one of Prof David Domke's notable (in Seattle) lecture series, and a friend told me she'd have me meet someone I most likely knew. Sitting in Kane 130 at UDub, there was Mike FRANCO ('70). We had fun reminiscing about many of people we knew, especially those stalwarts of the Jewish community in the Fifties and Sixties. One of the most famous of course was Larry CORYELL ('61), my estimable campaign manager when I ran for ASB office and formidable editor of the Sandstorm. Also Larry was a state champion high jumper. Incidentally, he was also a pretty good guitarist. And there was Howard KIRZ (60-RIP) who was ASB President and later Group Health's Chief of Medical Staff. Howard left us way too soon. No where did Peter BAUGHER's ('63) name come up. I met Peter the same year Dianne KORNBERG ('63), Lynn JOHNSON ('63) and I were in "The Diary of Anne Frank", a production of the Richland Players in the old Village Theater [on GWWay] in 1959. Even though all three of them were Warriors, we were friends before we made our way to Col-Hi. Dianne was "Ann", Lynn was the production's prompter, and Peter was their friend. Over the years I have known Peter I have never heard him refer to a Jewish background. And he's just as intelligent, thoughtful and interesting--or more so--than he was over fifty years ago. As for people who "look like they're a Jew"-- well, I guess I do. Some time ago, when "In the Beginning" quilt store here in Seattle was still a going concern, Laurie Schifrin (published quilt designer) asked me to applique a menorah and a dreidel. She said "You're Jewish, aren't you?". I said, "Not that I know of, but I might be. Who knows what the ancestors in Spain were up to--they could have been converses.". She said, "You look exactly like a Jewish woman I know in NYC.". And I told her that probably sealed the deal! That was quite a bit different than saying that I looked like a Jew. With that said, I think it's finally time for me to cancel my subscription. I've hung on many years longer than I thought I would and with VERY few postings by anyone graduating after 1972, I simply can't relate to most of the memories shared by alumni from the '50s and '60s. In fact, there are probably more obituary notices from people around my class than postings, so I've gotten to the point where I'm only opening the Sandstorm to see if anyone around my class year passed away (sad truth) or see how the sports teams are doing. As someone mentioned a few weeks ago, my generation and younger is keeping in touch using more social media options, like Facebook. If there is one thing I've always admired about the Sandstorm contributors, it's the amazing school spirit my fellow alumni have and how proud that makes me to be a Bomber. I have always wondered why I never knew him before that fateful day we met at my house back when... simple Answer... he didn't live in Richland before that... He rolled up in a black '46 Chevy with that jet black hair with the Buddy Holly curl and a cute babe by his side... I figured him to be about 22 or so... he was checkin' out the green '46/'47 Ford I had parked in the driveway (good reason it was parked... frozed engine AND I was 15)... I wasn't gonna let this used ta be teen- ager get the best of me but he did look kinda intimidating... he also seemed to know what he was talking about and I was dumber than dirt... we each kicked the tires of the "piece a crap" the other guy had and soon a deal was closed with a hand shake... I got me a runnin' Chebby (with forward gears only) and he got a froze up Ford... we parted knowing that we both snookered the other... from that day to the present ain't been nuthin' in this world come between us 'cept miles... we finish every phone conversation with "love you" it's just that way... we've had some fun times over the years... eaten every brand of Strawberry pie in Orange County... almost got 'rested in Hollywood when he decided to re-enact our times in Vietnam... (thankfully he didn't run over any land mines this time)... One a his boys ('08) managed to get Terry DAVIS ('65) on a rollie coaster for the very first time... he's baby sat cars for me in Richland and we've had some good times in Vegas... we even relive the first day we met... right now he's toolin' the Uptown in a little custom Ford he talked me outa... something like 100 major mods on that car... I grabbed George Barris at a show one time and told him I hadda surprise for him... he started combin' his hair and I hadda tell him "not that kind George"... I showed the car to George and he gasped "The San Antonio Rose... ya know I took the pictures of that car for a magazine back in 1958... " I showed him the mag and said "ya mean these pix?"... I did take a 20 year hiatus from Richland after grageashun... well, no, 19 years cuz I did go to the '66 grageashun night party while home on leave... but there's lotsa stories before and after for the tellin'... The statute has run on most of the stuff so I guess it would be OK... dare I risk mentioning that I was madly in love with today's birthday Bomber- babe all thru school and barely spoke two words to her during the whole time? After all these years I have lost most of my "shyness"... but back then there were some girls I just couldn't talk to... I still don't know why... my hands would get shaky and my knees went weak could hardly stand on my own two feet, to coin a phrase... I vividly recall the two opportunities I blew in Jr. High... One was at the Chief Jo Apartments at one of her friends and I just babbled... she was wearing a white t-shirt with a flannel shirt like a jacket over it... the other was on a field trip and she was wearing a fuzzy Mary Lou WATKINS ('63) type sweater... I was sitting directly next to her and Johnny CROWDER ('65-RIP) said something that put an end to my dream... I never even heard what he said... it was a fiasco and I think Johnny and I hadda walk home... thankfully, she remembers none of it... at our 20th, when I saw her I thought I was gonna fall flat on my face... hmmmmm, well, in fact I DID fall flat on my face several times, I'm told... what a dismal drunk I was back then... but for the Grace of God and the Program of Alcoholics Anonymous I still would be... thankfully that was my last drunken "hurrah" in Richland, at least one day atta time... but I have come to terms with missing my chances and we have become dear friends and that includes her great husband... so today instead of wondering what if... I spent the day going thru some boxes in storage and, as usual, found some treasures... I found my autographed vinyl copy of "the Last Waltz", where Martin Scorsese (try and say that ten times inna row) filmed "the Bands" farewell from the Winterland Ballroom with about every living Rock n Roll star available... even Ronnie Hawkins was there... I'd say that must have been interesting to get him to attend as I have heard he never got over the Band's leaving Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks... Ronnie had at least two pretty darned big hits... "Mary Lou" which I added to my post on ML's last b-day and "Forty Days", a cover of Chuck Berry's "30 days"... many confuse him with his cousin Dale, who wrote and made the first version of "Suzie Q"... I watched portions of the film a "few days" back (which probably equates to 1952) and it was so funny to see Robbie and the boyz looking so danged young... but then... And, yes, the urge to smoke can linger for many years. I feel an occasional "twinge" even yet, and I stopped smoking in early 1976! I had smoked since high school, was smoking heavily by the time I was 18, and "had the habit" for 24 years. I stopped "cold turkey" once earlier, in the late '60s, but regressed after several months. It is odd, thinking back, on the public attitude toward smoking "back in the day". It was, for us younger guys, a "manly" thing and we were emulating our parents and other adults. Yet we KNEW they weren't good for us. I recall we even called them "coffin nails" and "coughing nails". Too bad we didn't "get smart sooner". So many people had suffered from the results of heavy smoking... cancer, coronary issues, lung problems. In February 1978, I had just returned from taking my 12 year old daughter and 2 of her friends to Disneyland. As we arrived at the home of one of the girls, she got out and told me thank you. She said "Mr. Hunt, I would kiss you, but you smell like an ashtray." I quit smoking that instant. I had a pack in my pocket and a carton in the cupboard. I found that you only have to quit for a few seconds at a time. As the urge to smoke only lasts a few seconds then it passes. Of course it returned shortly but then you just resist for a that few seconds and it carries you to the next time. After 24 hours the length between urges grows. I know I am as hooked to cigarettes today as I was that day. Just like an alcoholic, you are always a smoker you just don't smoke... and now after 37 years I still have an occasional urge. I get the scoop as it occurs... He let me know in an email that came after I logged off on the evening of 3/19 to let me know that my Spalding "BFF", Craig DAVIS ('65), was going in to Kadlec on the morning of 3/20 to have a triple by-pass... so natch I immediately gotta hold of our friendly Nurse, Ceci BENNETT ('65) to get a room number etc. for Craig... she sent it right back and I've called a few times but no answer so far... Spoze they want him to rest up and stuff... now ta get the picture, ya gotta know the history between us... we weren't just best pals, we were inseparable... If I gotta skinny white belt, Craig got a skinny white belt, If Craig wore his collar up, I wore mine up (and we did)... I wuz gonna send the 5th grade picture with this, but Craig is absent from the pic... I remember us having matching kinda nylon shirts with silver thread running thru the shirts so they shimmered like something Elvis would wear (they also itched like crazy)... we had white bucks and the whole 9 yards... in 5th grade our teacher used to hit us with a rubber hose... the same teacher used to come over to my house and cry on my mother's shoulder... the teacher was deaf as a poker and could never really tell who was causing the problems (what difference did it make... every kid in the class was a died-in-the-wool "hood")... I told my mom and she simply said if she got it wrong on one day it should count for the day before when I got away with whatever I happened to do... not what I wanted to hear... soooooo, we went to Craig's mom and told her my mom was going to the principal, would she do the same... she was glad to oblige and the rubber hose was removed from our teacher's possession... naturally the teacher told my mom and there was hell to pay when I got home that afternoon... I could go on and on about the things Craig and I did in those Spalding days, but you get the picture... by calling Craig to mind, I don't mean to omit the other life long friends from Spalding... they know who they are... but if any of them is about to have heart surgery just lemme know and I'll tell stories on you too... Craig is in room 317 so if ya getta chance to go by... tell him I'm thinking of him and I really did call!!!!!!!! Over the years I've enjoyed picking up bits of info on Bombers and where life has taken them. The diversity in our lives is quite striking and sure interesting - at least to me. One of our alumni runs a successful fireworks display company - can't recall his name now [That would be Larry MATTINGLY ('60)]. Dick MEYER ('51) became a USAF general, and Rod LINKOUS ('53) also. Brad UPTON ('74) remains a successful standup comic. Dick COATES ('52-RIP) and Kay MITCHELL Coates ('52) operated a spiritual retreat center. George BRUNSTAD ('52) was an airline pilot, and also a master swimmer who swam the English channel. Verne VanDUSEN ('52) was a long haul truck driver. And so on... quite a diversity! I'd like to urge fellow bombers to share some of their life experiences, travels, occupations etc. Life often goes different ways... I'll share a little of my own. While in high school, I thought perhaps I'd become an electrical engineer or a "gentleman farmer", not sure which. And as a CAP cadet I figured I'd do my military service in the Air Force. Learned to fly while in high school. Nothing worked out that way. On an adolescent whim, along with a friend, I enlisted in the Coast Guard at age 17, left Col-Hi on Jan 2, 1952... got my diploma in the mail perhaps 2 years later. (Maybe I belong to Class of '54 in stead of '52?) Served 5 1/2 years as an enlisted man (radio operator and electronics tech) - attended OCS in '57. Attend various schools including a 2-year electronics technology school. Served on 8 ships including a polar icebreaker, was executive officer of 2 and commanding officer of 2. Travels and assignments took me to Boston, New York, Connecticut, Puerto Rico, Florida, Spain (and visits to Germany, Italy, France, Portugal, Morocco), various places in California, Oregon, Alaska, the Canadian Arctic, Hawaii and Japan. Served a total of 32 years and retired as a captain (O-6) (same as a colonel for you non- nautical folks). It was a great career. After retiring my wife Ruth and I settled in Port Angeles, WA and for ten years did mostly volunteer community service work... United Way, YMCA board, Kiwanis, city planning commission and 4 years as an elected city councilman. Ruth helped me in some of these endeavors and was a volunteer administrator and fundraiser for Hospice. It was a rewarding time. When we could, we RVd and have owned a trailer since 1981 or so. We are on trailer #9, I think! We've hit every state in the U.S. and many of the Canadian provinces. Built a house on Chinook Pass (40 mi west of Yakima) and lived "in the woods" for 8 years. Moved to a little Arkansas Ozarks community 14 mi.south of Branson, MO and lived there 6 years. Spent 2 years "on the road" RVing, and then settled back in Richland this past October, nearly 63 years after I left. Between us we have 2 sons and a daughter, a "passle" of grandkids and a growing number of great grand kids. It has been "quite a ride"! So what kind of life experiences have some of you other Bombers had, old timers like me and some of you "younger folk"? -Dick WIGHT ('52) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Maren SMYTH ('63 & '64) Re: 2015 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race http://www.iditarod.com/ - Official Iditarod Site Picture of Dallas Seavey, 2015 Winner There's still 10 teams on the trail... maybe they'll all make it to Nome tomorrow. Re: Trail Markers Officials use snow machines to stick lath trail markers in the snow for the mushers along the route... this year there were 13,500 lath trail markers along the trail. Re: How Nome was named Have you heard the story about how Nome was named? A cartographer made a note on a naval map "? Name" and then a person that read his notation thought he wrote "C. Nome." Thus Nome become Nome. Re: Mackey brothers race down Front St. in Nome to the finish line \. Re: Scott Janssen scratched at Koyuk and tells how Lance Mackey saved his [Scott's] dog team . Since these mushers ventured out in most all kinds of weather, for safety reasons they found the idea that pilots rely on, known today as the flight plan. Word was relayed ahead that a musher and team were on the trail, and a kerosene lamp was lit and hung outside the roadhouse. It not only helped the dog driver find his destination at night, but more importantly, it signified that a team or teams were somewhere out on the trail. The lamp was not extinguished until the musher safely reached his destination. In keeping with that tradition, the Iditarod Trail Committee will light a "Widow's Lamp" at 10:00am, on the first Sunday [Monday in 2015] in March, in Nome at the trail's end. This lamp, which will be attached to the Burled Arch, our official finish line, will remain lit as long as there are mushers on the trail competing in the race. When the last musher crosses the finish line, officials will extinguish the "Widow's Lamp" signifying the official end of the Iditarod for that year. All too often, public and media think of the race as being over when the winner crosses the finish line, yet there are still teams on the trail. Let it be remembered, Iditarod is not over until the last musher has reached Nome and is off the trail." http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Idit/150322-Red_Lantern.jpg Red LANTERN (in Elim 123 to Nome 66 Cindy Abbott/#10 Bomber Cheers, -Maren SMYTH ('63 & '64) ~ Gretna, LA ~ 65° at midnight **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: Spalding Rules Well at least I thought so back in the second thru 5th grade... no luck getting through to Craig DAVIS ('65) at Kadlec today either... the first time I called he was back in the OR and the second time they had just moved him into a room in ICU... if anybody knows how he's doing lemme know... in the mean time... prayers never hurt... My primary care doctor refused to do a pre Op physical on me claiming the paper work request from the surgeon was filled out wrong for Medicare. After weeks of discussion and trading more paper work the Administrator of the Clinic (names withheld here) gave the doctor a direct order to do the pre-op. So I went in at the appointed time and the nurse took the BP, pulse, O2 saturation, and temp. Then she hooked me up to the 12 lead EKG and ran out a chart. The doctor came in, looked at it for a few seconds, said he was not comfortable with it, and would not approve me for surgery. He literally pitched it to me and walked out. Jackie and I got a firm grip on each other and held our tempers and I limped out to the car. At that point I had been in fairly severe pain taking half of a 25mg of Oxycodo/acetamino every 6-8 hours. It kept the pain at a tolerable level where I could still function. The Administrator finally called me back almost a week later. She apologized profusely and suggested I call the UW Cardio Dept. Fast forward to a couple more weeks and I had secured an appointment with the Cardio Dept. at UW Hospital in Seattle. Wow! What a difference... 2 Cardio doctors grilled me for 25 minutes of health history and what did I know of my WPW? (WPW is an extra nerve path to the heart and at times can cause the heart an extra beat once in a while) (Yes it can get worse and cause fibrillation). But mine never has and I have known about it since I was 19. These 2 MDs were so cool, yet friendly, concise and polite and exacting in their questions. It was refreshing. They hooked me up and ran an EKG and then explained the results in patient detail to Jackie and I. Net results were that afternoon I opened my UW Medical log (they gave me the access code) and there was my detailed letter "OK for Surgery, no problem". After searching for two weeks at an hour or two each day I found a used stationary bicycle for $13 at a thrift shop. My recovery plan calls for some specific use of the bike on a sliding scale. Yes, as soon as I am back on my feet I will find another Primary Care doctor. "Happiness is a new knee joint" -J. My life so far. Got divorced in late '60s. Loaded what I could in car, tossed in three small children (no child car seats or seat belts back then) and took off for Texas. Ended up in Fort Worth, TX when I went to work for a CPA. In a couple of years, I married him and we moved to San Antonio, TX to start a new practice. After 20 years, got divorced AGAIN. But we still worked together for another ten years. Figured I needed my CPA certificate, so I started college at age 50. Went to school at night and worked days and it took me ten years to graduate but I did it. Sat for the CPA exam, twice (that thing was hard). During this time got remarried (last time, I promise). Ex-husband passed away and I took over business. Love doing this work, except maybe during tax season. But since I am my own boss, I can take off anytime I can schedule a cruise. I think we'll find we have more experiences in common than we might think. Me, I'm not going to sum in all up in a few sentences. But I am going to reflect on one thing. Looking back from retirement, I've discovered how the tiniest of events can radically alter the course of our lives. A woman says no instead of yes to a marriage proposal?someone takes the B train rather than the A?someone takes a spur-of-the-moment trip to another city. For me, there is one defining moment, one small word, that had it been different, would have radically changed what my life was to become. Oddly enough, it was at my pre-induction physical in 1968. There used to be this little monster called The Draft, and when I graduated from WSU in 1968, I knew the Army would come calling soon. I beat them to the punch by enlisting in the Air Force, and was sent to Spokane for the pre-induction physical. At one point during the physical, they lined us up and a foot doctor walked by, examining our feet. He stopped in front of me. Now, my feet have all the arch of a thin pancake?which is to say, none. They have limited what I can do all my life. But I didn't know then they were the source of the pain I had experienced. I didn't know they were the reason I couldn't keep up with the others on boy scout hikes, or that my first job, a box boy at Stone's Low Cost Foods on Jadwin, put me in so much pain I couldn't do the work. I've always had to look for work that didn't require me to stand for long periods. I have never been able to do so without pain, and professional arch supports haven't helped. So the doctor stopped in front of me, and said: "Those feet ever give you any trouble?" "No," I said, not knowing they had been the source of my considerable pain throughout my first 22 years. The doctor moved on. But what if I had said "yes" and had been declared not qualified for duty? If I had said yes instead of no, and not been taken, I would not have been sent to California, where I was to spend most of the next 45 years, privileged to live by the sea in a place I quickly grew to love, and still regard as close to Paradise. Three times I moved away, and three times I went back. I would not have become aware of Brooks Institute of Photography, just down the road from the base, and gotten the notion to become a professional photographer, which I was for 18 years (it was my bad feet that quickly forced me out of doing it full time) after graduating from Brooks in 1977. I would not have had the privilege of participating in an outstanding adult choir, and all the joy that brought, or of going with them on a European concert tour in 1985 (unforgettable memories). I would not have met a woman in 1972 who was to haunt my psyche for the next 44 years. I would not have gone to work for the state of California, and acquired a pension, or participated in so many things that ever so slowly built up the self-confidence of a young man with a very bad self-image. If I had said "yes" that day instead of no, I shudder to think how it might have gone. I would probably never have left the state of Washington, perhaps not even Richland. The chronic depression I struggled with for so long might have overwhelmed me. I might never have secured a pension. I probably would never have been able to say, "I've seen Europe". And I never would have become a veteran. I was dragged kicking and screaming into the military, and fought it all the time I was in. But I'm so proud now to say that it's one of the best things I ever did. The benefits never stop. I'm so proud to say "Yes, I'm a vet." The thanks I get from strangers when I wear my Air Force hat are worth more than the military discounts I still receive. Well, I've gone on long enough. It would be interesting to hear from other Bombers who can pinpoint a tiny event in their lives that, in looking back, took them on a radically different path than what might have been. -Bill SCOTT ('64) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Linda REINING ('64) To: Dick WIGHT ('52) Re: Dale GRAY ('58wb) I don't remember the names of all the ships Dale was stationed on, but I do know, that from '65-67, he was on the CGC Northwind and in Alaska from June '66 to November '67; he was on the CGC Midgett and in Alaska in '77... there was a fire on that ship and he was the only casualty... died from smoke inhalation. As evidenced by some of my assignments, we had jobs to do and a duty weekend gave the active duty folks a break. Toward the end of my career, they did away with the reserve units and assigned the reservists directly to the active duty commands. That made it easier for the commands to really use the resources we brought to them. For example, one of my unit's members was a certified Cummins repair technician in his day job. After mowing lawns all over Richland I got a job at Lamb Weston with some other Bombers in Connell. In the fall most everyone went off to college. I was tired of school and ended up joining the Navy the end of September 1970. It was the end of Vietnam and I wasn't guaranteed any schooling and ended up on a gasoline tanker, USS Genesee (AOG 8) in Pearl Harbor for nine months. The ship was decommissioned and I was sent to the USS Midway (CVA 41) in the San Francisco bay area. By that time I had been selected for Yeoman Third Class, so got a job in the Safety/Captains Office. We left for Vietnam April 10, 1972 and returned to San Francisco area March 3, 1973, a very long cruise with multiple stops in the Philippines, Hong Kong and spent Christmas in Singapore harbor where we had the Bob Hope show on the flight deck in Singapore, that was really neat. After six months in the bay area in October 1973, I decided to reenlist in the Navy for orders to the Philippines for 1-1/2 yrs. Lived on the local economy the whole time, but had access to the Navy commissary for food and things. Had three motorcycles, only falling off of one. In April 1975 ended up in San Diego, CA and getting married to my girl from the Philippines (still married 39 years later). After having our daughter, Jennifer ('95), in San Diego I again went back to the Philippines for three years, this time living in on base housing where our son, James ('97), was born. In October 1980 ended up in Bremerton, WA with the Submarine Rep for the shipyard. They convinced me that submarines were better and I ended up on the USS Blueback (SS 581) (the Navy's last diesel powered submarine) as a non qual Chief Petty Officer. After three years on the submarine I finished my 20 years in the Navy at Deep Submergence Unit in San Diego. We moved back to Richland and after a short stint with Hanford Patrol I went to work with WPPS/Energy Northwest where I am still working 23 years later in the IT Department. 1-1/2 years to go and I will pull the plug for good, enjoying riding my bike around the Tri-Cities in good weather and doing some traveling. -Jim DAUGHERTY ('70) ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. I am reminded of Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken" and a moment in the 9th grade. Columbia High School had a range of advanced classes, mostly in math and the sciences. The idea was to have a 10th grade advanced English class (Mrs. Macy). In both junior high schools the interested students were screened by an original essay we were to write in an hour on how we interpreted a surprise poem that was handed to us. The poem was Robert Frost's, and I had a head start and did well enough. I had been quite smitten by this poem two years earlier when it was dubbed over a TV special on the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Never was interested in the Academy (instead Architecture, University of Washington, 1962-7), but in 1967 did go through Naval OCS in Newport, RI as an alternative to the draft. Went to sea on an aircraft carrier (USS Hornet, CVS-12) and visited Hong Kong, Singapore, etc., and took part in the Apollo XI and XII lunar landing recovery missions in the Pacific. Later in graduate school (UW 1972-5) I studied and wrote about Singapore. One thing leads to another. 'Nuff said about me, but here's my favorite poem--which expands Scott's above comment--and which I actually memorized a full two years before the essay test. The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear; Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same. And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I? I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. -Pete BEAULIEU ('62) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Donna BOWERS Rice (Gold Medal Class of '63) Re: US Coast Guard To: Tedd CADD ('66) My brother Dale BOWERS ('65) served in the USCG during the Vietnam Nam era being posted to Portland, then Honolulu, HI in the mid to late '60s. As a lawyer, I vividly remember virtually every single "NOT" a secretary left out of a brief and I failed to catch in proof reading! I often think of where I would be if I hadn't done this or that. All my life I have made bad choices. Some have been worse than others. The problem is, that with most bad choices, the line my life took led to some of the most wonderful things in my life. If I hadn't made those choices I honestly feel I would be worse off today that if I hadn't made them. I am blessed with the most wonderful daughter in the world and had I not made an unwise choice I'd not have married her mother and I would be far worse off than I am. I would never know the joy of being a father nor have the love of a daughter... we play a game... we each try and find an item the other doesn't have that says: "I love you more" The other day she showed up to the Delinquent's lunch with a ring for me that says "I love you most" I have no idea how I can top that one... she was soooooooo proud of herself and she just gloated all through lunch... bad choices took me to Law School... bad choices lead to my retirement pension going up in 2008 like it was never there... bad choices have all brought me to where I am today and I wouldn't change a thing... I honestly believe that but for those choices I might have missed all the best so the bad all seems quite worth while to me... sure I'd like to be well off and flying here and flying there, but I must say that I have done most everything I ever wanted to do... I have no bucket list and am about as content as I would ever want to be... If I hadn't said "yes" to a beer in the back seat of Charlie WARFORD's ('61) car so many years ago, I might not have spent 24 years drunk... ah but I'd have missed so much... One was my first baby- sitter ever and the other was a great pal with a very good sense of humor... I miss his off color stories in my inbox in the mornings... loved the way he always signed everything... this morning I watched my Bengal cats and laughed at the differences between them... I know both B-day Bombers would enjoy watching them as well... The Alpha is about as fast and stealthy as any cat I've ever seen... almost as fast as Terry DAVIS ('65) when he would swipe goodies out of our hands and have them in his mouth before we knew they were gone... At dinner one evening at Philippe's in L.A., he actually took a huge slice of banana cream pie from me and stuffed the whole thing in his mouth before I could complain... so anyway, the Alpha can catch hummingbirds when they taunt him the way hummingbirds love to taunt cats... keeps me busy saving the little guys... the other who would like to think he is the Alpha sees the biggest dumbest birds in the yards and crouches... then as he begins the attack he yells: "Fill your hands with lead you SOB" like John Wayne in True Grit... he has only managed to catch one dove in his whole career! As an identical twin, let me say that our mother handled this awkwardness very well, almost, when John and I were still in 9th grade. How are twins to give each other equivalent surprise-gifts at the annual double-birthday celebration? John (now in Portland, OR) and I had opted for simplicity the year before, and decided to save each other the trouble of dreaded shopping by skipping gifts altogether. It's a wash anyway, and the time could be better spent together at the River slinging rocks across to the seagulls on the nearest island (never came very close, they fly away). The next year in 9th grade we were instructed to exchange at least something. We agreed to exchange TEN-spots and that this would satisfy the mandate. On that special day, and in front of our mother's watchful eye, I forked over a crisp ten dollar bill and congratulated my brother on yet another birthday marking his advancing maturity. John offered his profound appreciation and then reached in his pocket to hand me, what, a FIVE-dollar bill... He explained, "its been a bad year financially and I just can't afford any more." Some twin birthdays still bring a good laugh over fifty years later. -Pete BEAULIEU ('62) ~ Shoreline, WA **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Tommy HEMPHILL ('62) Re: Portland area Bomber lunch ~ 2/21/15 http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Lunches/Current-PDX/00.htm Hello Fellow Bombers, We had another great visit at Lunch on Saturday, February 21st.
