There were 6 Richland Bombers--Roy and Pat Gier West (both '49), Ginger WARFORD ('55) and 2 others from '54 whose names I don't remember. The show was great and we ate delicious food at Anthony's, overlooking Spokane Falls. Wonderful! This trip was through Richland and Pasco Parks and Rec. Progress continues on the new Lewis and Clark school. Landscaping is completed on the Jadwin side with lots of concrete and black top on the Downing side. They managed to save some of the old trees, which I think is nice. I've been told the old building will be torn down. The move apparently starts as soon as school gets out for the summer. New construction going on at Jason Lee on the Van Giesen side. Not sure what that is all about--looks like maybe "permanent" portables??? Surely not! The "M" Hotel is up and running again. Lots of cars parked there so maybe business is good. I guess Sterling's on GWWay won the battle with City Hall to build closer to the River, on their same lot. Good for them! Yesterday (5/30) I went to Malley's Pharmacy up on GWWay and the sign is gone. Other stuff being sold. Now I wonder where I'll get the Methyl-Guard my Neurologist recommends. They close at 1:00 on Saturdays, so I don't know if they still carry that product. Seems to me I heard that Densow's pharmacy has closed. This morning I took my sister-in-law (NAB) to the Library to check out more audio books and they don't open until 1 pm on Sundays and are closed on Sunday in the summer. Looked online and didn't see a clarification. Is it Summer, yet? Weather-wise, yes. Per calendar, no. I'm sure this is not all I had in mind, but will close for now. Bomber regards to each and all, -Marilyn "Em" DeVINE ('52) ~ in hotter and hotter Richland *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Derrith PERSONS Dean ('60) Re: for prayer no tears... last Monday my sons took me to Kadlec where I woke up Tuesday... alarms on my bed... my sodium level was down to 118 not good... over the next few days my sodium was built up to 135. An MRI was done cancer was found in my brain. At least 30 marbles which will take 15 treatments. I have had 3 already. my redeemer lives! I am so happy that I have all you all who pray for me. I am going through radiation at this time not fun but doable (if that's a word) I had wanted to help with our class reunion and yet I will still do what I can.. I do want to be there. I am going to try to be there for the lunch on the 6th. I am not driving yet. That will come. While in hospital they wanted me to use a walker... I did pick it up and walked with it... I got out of Kadlec on Thursday... rapid heart beat sent me back until 11 something... pm. please continue to pray for me... I was sure that they just grageated the other day... but for me the other day can be two days ago or 50 years ago... time has no true dimension for me... it just is... the other day someone posted a picture... actually two pictures on face book... one was some older babes and the other was high school girls and the caption read something about how to each other we haven't changed at all... that's the way I feel about the B-day Bomber-babe... it's funny how I look at my friends and see that tho we have NEVER grown up... we have hanged in some ways... I enjoy the way I feel great respect and am so very proud of who we have each become... not "what" we became like as in what we have done for a living... that stopped being important about our 25 year reunion and I assume it was the same for most of us... at that point we just became the friends we were inna olden days... I always say we kinda reverted back to third grade or maybe even kinnygarden... no more I have, I am, I did... but just kinda "hey wanna go play on the dike and drink water outa somebody's hose when we get thirsty"... the Bomber-babe is one side of a couple that I cherish greatly... always thoughtful... surprising me with cards now and again from the North Shore and just always being the kind of people we all hoped we would be when we... uhhhhhhhh... got a little older... not that she isn't every bit the babe she was in school... of course she is... The Bombers knocked off Battle Ground 5-4 and Yelm 13-10 in Friday's games, setting up the semi-final against 2012 champion Woodinville. They beat the nationally ranked Woodinville by a score of 9-7. Then lost to Tahoma in the Championship game by a score of 9-1 taking 2nd place. Right now the Malley's sign is down because they are remodeling the storefront after someone drove through the front windows last year. They are still open as near as I can tell from that site. I heard the old Lewis and Clark will come down shortly, after school is out. The old Marcus Whitman will also come down when they start building a new school on the same site. The kids while construction is going on will be bused to the old Sacy and the current Sacy students will remain in their fairly new school so there will be 2 groups of kids in adjoining schools for the next school year. The construction at Jason Lee is a new alternative school (not part of Jason Lee) and will open in August. I had read Densow's will still be open -- just not the pharmacy part. I hadn't heard about Malley's as the head pharmacist graduated with my niece in '95 and came home to start her practice. She started elsewhere but when Malley's became available she purchased it is my understanding. On another note-I participated in the Relay for Life Friday 6pm until Saturday at noon. I stayed awake all night, didn't walk all night obviously but didn't sleep either. I was almost afraid to get down on the ground in my sleeping bag, thought I may not be able to get up and didn't need that. I raised just under $1,300. and had a blast. -Betti AVANT ('69) ~ Richland ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. A ceremony will take place at the Davenport Hotel in Spokane on September 18th. On September 19th, at a home football game, Rex will be introduced along with others at half time. Rex coached gymnastics at WSU from 1966-'68 and tennis from 1967-'94 at Washington State University. His athlete students had the highest graduation rate in school history. Center court at the WSU outdoor tennis center is named in his honor. Rex is a graduate of WSU, where he lettered in gymnastics. While Rex was stationed in Korea during the end of the war, he learned to play and teach tennis. That was the beginning of his 39 years of coaching at Richland High School and WSU. While at WSU, Rex coached both women and men's tennis for a time, finishing his career coaching only the men's teams until he retired in 1994. He is one of only 5 Cougar coaches to attend and graduate from WSU, win an athletic award, return to WSU as a coach and retire as a coach from the WSU athletic department. During his retirement years, Rex volunteered his time to help with the Pullman High School tennis teams and plays tennis often. Just think, around 1950-'51 the Korean War started, just a few years after WWII ended. Nike missiles decorated the desert mountains surrounding our home town. The missiles promised Hanford and Richland protection, however the young, handsome soldiers of the U.S. Army which manned those missiles did not... according to my father, Jim Clatworthy. Thanks to my two strong brothers, Jimmy ('46) and Bobby ('51-RIP), I erred not. Then, Atomic energy was the new "marvel" promising the world an unlimited supply of energy for the future. The history of this promise was documented, thanks to another new "marvel"of the time, Television. It was both a scary and wonderful time in which to live. Times haven't changed much have they? I will be 80 years old in September but it seems like yesterday that Jan BARKER ('55-RIP) and others danced with me in Jean Smiset's recitals to great songs like; "Nola", "Mexican Hat Dance", "Heart Aches", "Louisiana Hayride", "Hungarian Folk Dance", "Copen degas" and "Night and Day"... probably several more that I have forgotten. Later I danced at the Jane Johnston School of Dance after Jean Smiset retired. By then I was married to my Hi-School sweetheart, Ray WEYERTS ('53-RIP) and had one child. I worked for Janie the year she did "The Little Mermaid Ballet" for recital. I danced the parts of "Queen of the Dark Waters", the "Mermaid" (the dry one) and was a tap dancing "Sea Urchin" of some sort. When Ray and I moved to Seattle in 1958, we each attended the University of Washington. He graduated in 1961 and with two kids I took my time and did the same in 1968. I taught school and Ray was Senior Designer for Westin hotels. In our spare time we took ballroom dancing lessons. We enjoyed dancing three nights a week for many years. Needless to say, after Ray's accidental death in 1991 I was without the love of my life and dancing ended for a long time. As time passed I rediscovered solo dancing. Today I do Zumba Gold (for those over 55) two times a week and line dancing one night a week. I'll dance as long as I can walk and then, if necessary, I'll dream of Margo Fonteyn and Ruddy Nureyev dancing "Romeo and Juliet" at the Seattle Opera House. One day, I'll catch up with my handsome ballroom dancing partner in the greatest ballroom of all. Boy, I can hardly wait! He and his wife started out at Lewis & Clark elementary school in the mid 1950s, as the PE teacher and the music teacher. But along came the budget cuts and one would have to go. Not so fast. No gymnastics points for any dismount. Instead, together they did the double half-time maneuver and we students kept them both. What's that tennis expression? Oh yeah: "Love". -Pete BEAULIEU ('62) ~ Shoreline, WA *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Shirley COLLINGS Haskins ('66) Re: Malley's http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Col/150605-Malleys.jpg Malley's has been remodeling since last summer when a lady lost control of her car and drove through the front windows of the business. They are open, and I purchase my Methyl-Guard Plus there. (See two attached pictures.) Re: Construction at Jason Lee The construction on the big open area of the playground on the south side of Jason Lee on the Van Giesen side will be the new home of the Home-Link School. Re: Lewis and Clark, Sacajawea and Marcus Whitman Grade Schools The last day of school for Richland will be Wednesday, June 10. As one of our daughters is a teacher at Lewis and Clark, she told us that they have to be completely out of the current building by June 12. The Richland Police Department Bomb Squad will be using the old school for practice, and then the school will be demolished. The new two-story school located on the east side of the current school will be open this fall. Sacajawea is also in the process of moving to its new two-story school northeast of its current location in the fall. The current school will be used by the Marcus Whitman staff and students for one year, as Marcus Whitman will be demolished with a two-story school to be built on the current school property. I believe they will stagger the start and dismissal times for Marcus Whitman and Sacajawea in the attempt to avoid congestion. There are very, very few things I love nearly as much as my trips home... but the Rat Fink Reunion is one of them... every year, 100s of Finksters head for the Roth (Big Daddy Ed Roth) House in Manti, Utah... Kenny and Jennifer DAME ('68/NAB but is in spirit) got the opportunity to share the fun with us for a day this year... tho they were on a schedule, I did manage to introduce them to most of the artists (many more that once... ok so I'm getting old) and they were able to see the museum and finale car show, tho the tour of the house will hafta wait till next year... My daughter, Sarah, made her second visit by popular demand of Finkland and a great desire on her part (photo of us on our way enclosed)... http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Riv/150609-WithSarah.jpg the only way to describe it is as a "Famblie Reunion" only one at which everyone likes everyone... no grudges and no egos... just pure fun... some of these kats and kitties are famous for their work world wide... but everyone is equal at the reunion... Ilene Roth and her famblie make us all welcome... we are fed and looked after at every turn... this year we had 70 artists make the trip from all over the US and Canada... for a better look check out my face book page... Jen and Ken were welcomed as new famblie members outa the gate and managed to collect some nice memorabilia... if you have never been to a Rat Fink Reunion you have no idea what you are missing... this was our thirteenth at the Roth house... Ed started it as a Christmas Party for the artists back inna day in L.A... but when he passed Ilene moved it to the house and Moon (nka Moon Eyes) took over and continued the Christmas event which is pretty darned awesome in it's own right... Chico makes a point of thanking every single vendor personally as the show comes a close... The moment I leave the motel at Manti, I experience a home sickness that, previously, I only experienced when leaving Richland... well, after the L.A. Roadster Show the weekend of the 19th... next stop Richland and Cool Desert Nights (CDNs)... For alla '65ers out there: if you have an idea of where to have the Saturday party lemme know... it is getting close... Brian JOHNSON ('65) and Shirley COLLINGS ('66) advised me that the "kissing tree" will remain in place and only pruning will be required... I am sorry for the Collings' family's loss of brother Jim ('62-RIP)... Speaking of loss... today I remember the birth of a favorite Bomber-babe... tho I was in her sister, Nina's class ('65), this babe and I became very close friends over the years... she is missed but always in our hearts... The tour, provided by Dept. of Energy folks here, is very well done. It starts with a brief video and briefing at their tour site (off Horn Rapids Road), then a bus tour on a comfortable tour bus out to the B reactor for about a 2 1/2 facility tour that features several talks by docents, self-guided tour opportunities, etc. The bus tour continues in an informative circle through the site, showing the locations of all 9 reactors, other buildings and sites, a distant view of the vitrification plant under construction, the locations of Hanford and White Bluffs. Tour is narrated by a guide through the trip, which takes about 4 1/2 hours start to finish. Tours are by reservation only, and fill up quickly each year. However, there are often cancellations and seats available on short notice if you live locally or are here in the Tri-Cities for a few days. A new tour has been added that is more oriented toward prewar history and the communities that existed before 1942. It was a delightful experience to visit with fellow classmates. Among others, I enjoyed seeing Rosann BENEDICT ('63), a fellow Sandstorm staff member who shared the honor with me of being admitted to the staff as a sophomore. A special treat was seeing Peter BEAULIEU ('62) again, who told some stories about me that I didn't remember. After the luncheon Rosann and Peter accompanied me to the Holyrood Catholic Cemetery to pay our respects to Peter's wife Kristi and my high school love Patty BEZZIO ('63-RIP), a very nostalgic moment for me. I also enjoyed spending six hours visiting with fellow classmate Sandra GENOWAY Jeneaue ('62), catching each other up on our lives and sharing stories of Patty BEZZIO. I didn't know Sandra when we were in school, but we became acquainted first through e-mails as she was a friend of Patty in her adult years. Sandra is confined to her apartment building due to severe allergies and asthma. Her husband passed away and Sandra is very lonely and would love to hear from fellow Bombers. She's currently without Internet access but would like me to share her phone number. Please e-mail me if you would like to give her a call and I'll reply with her phone number. I didn't have time to visit with Diane ZELLEY ('63), the one girlfriend who is still living, but I did talk to her on the phone. I was surprised when she said she didn't consider me her boyfriend, although we dated for eight months and she took me on a Tolo date, perhaps because six of those months she shared me with Patty, one of her best friends. I was happy that she was willing to talk to me. Our oldest son Tom, 28, finishes his two- year course of study in computers and software technology at the Los Angeles Job Corps center June 25th. And as of that day he has no place to live. The plan earlier was that he would have a job by then and be able to secure a place to live. The job has not materialized, despite wide-ranging searches in the Los Angeles area and out of state. Job Corps will not house him when classes are finished, and he cannot come to live with us in Oregon, as our lease will not permit it for more than a month. He has a steady girlfriend in L.A. whom he plans to marry, has signed up for continued education at a local college, has long-term goals to pursue a Bachelor's and eventually a Master's degree there, and strongly wants to remain in L.A. Everything he wants and needs is there (except, so far, a job). Tom is adopted, and has been through many severe challenges over the years. He has come a very long way, longer than we can reveal. There were times we didn't think he was ever going to make his way in this world. But he blossomed in Job Corps, was an outstanding student, and has a long list of certifications for his profession. He continues to interview and has a good prospect for a job. Tom is quiet and polite, and doesn't drink, smoke, do drugs, or hang with those that do. He is very health-conscious and mature. The bottom line here folks is that he is in desperate need of a place to live in the L. A. area until he can get settled in a job. Not an apartment; can't afford that, but something like a spare room, for which we can provide a modest stipend. SO, fellow Bombers, I'm sending out the call. Can anyone help? If you can, email me immediately. You'd earn our undying gratitude. We have 10 days to solve this. Harry called me and said Kate wishes to be at our Club 40 celebration in September. I then received an e-mail from her explaining what they are working on. A project has been put together as a cutting-edge mapping project funded by the Imaging Research Center at UMBC and they seek our participation. They are focusing on those who grew up near the Hanford facility in the 1940s and 1950s. This is strictly voluntary and no names or address will be asked for. Their software allows anyone to take a survey on an ipad or iphone and it will be sent to a mapping program to be viewed later. They are asking even if you have no health issues or if your family has had issues from living in the area, then they will map either outcome. Harry says their purpose is two-fold. First, they intend to utilize the WWWeb to allow populations near sites of radioactive and toxic releases to integrate community health data with global health data from similar exposure sites. Secondly, they hope to gauge the level of interest in the new form of community epidemiology. Kate, Harry and their helpers would be out in the lobby at their own table with further information and electronic devices, September 11th. It will not interfere with Club 40. They would be available to anyone who is interested in answering their survey and then seeing the mapping in a few weeks to see where the groups of healthy or ill people lived. Nothing has been settled yet, but I am interested in hearing from you Club 40 members who read the Alumni Sandstorm. If you are interested in seeing more of Kate Brown's accomplishments and awards, Google her at Kate Brown, Professor of History, UMBC. It will tell you a lot!! Harry's class of 1960 will be having their 55 year reunion, and he plans to attend. Kate is planning to attend other local class reunions for this same survey project. My husband, Clarence FULCHER ('51) went to work at Hanford in 1955. At that time they did not have any understanding of what danger they were working with. General Electric had him pouring chemicals from one pail into another with NO PROTECTION of any kind. There were many other exposures he was subject to at the direction of supervision. Fast forward- in 2006 he was diagnosed with cancer. Niosh said the percentage of his employment at Hanford was 70 percent caused by his exposures to the chemicals during his 30 years at Hanford. He was stage 4. Three years of treatment reduced the large growths but it remained in his blood and bones. Two months after the chemo treatments ended, he had a heart attack, then dementia began, then severe psoriasis, then other things. He ended up with 7 different illnesses. In 2012 they called me and told me he had cancer in three new locations of his body. By this time I was all used up and could no longer give all the care he and our property needed. I called our son who lives in Ferndale, WA and told him I needed help. He immediately helped me move to Ferndale where he lived. I have been here 3 years with Clarence in an assisted living home and Hospice is helping take care of him. The doctor has given him 6 months at most. It's been heart breaking, to say it in the kindest way. We've been married 62 years and grew up together. I was 16 and Clarence was 20 when we Married. We were both virgins and new NOTHING about life or anything else. We learned one day at a time. How do I live without him? Hanford is certainly a mixed bag of mystery to many folks. I've read many articles written long ago describing its excellent safety record and the on going attempts of improving the safety of its operations. However, the results of those efforts in a large number of cases have been heartbreaking. In the past 15 or so years the culture has changed. One radical change (to me anyway) is the lower radiation exposure limits that are now placed on workers. When I hired on in 1977 the limit was 3 REM a year whole body the extremities, I. E. hands, arms, were higher. And you could take up to 300 milli-rem a week when the job required it. With that being said the radiation monitors tried to stay away from that limit. Today it is 500 milli-rem a year whole body. It can be approved to take up to 1000 milli-rem, or 1 REM, for the year and in special circumstances 1500 milli-rem. Those exposures include gamma, beta and neutron radiations. Years ago that was not the case. Chemical exposure was controlled in some fashion but only to those whose hazards were known. In the separation plants powdered chemicals were routinely handled without respiratory protection. There were no such things as MSDSs to inform the worker or exposure limits set when they were being used. Today's Hanford worker is more informed about chemical and radiation exposure because of the painful and heartbreaking lessons learned from former workers, issues your husband suffers from today. It will be interesting (kind of a poor word to use) to see if the same plight(s) befall the current work force. My post is not meant to defend the actions of Hanford. I hope you don't feel that's what I'm doing. My heart does go out to you and your family. -Don Sorenson (NAB) ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. It seem like a dozen "Bombers" stayed in the same house. After working 12 hour (hard labor) shifts and a 14 day work week it all became blurry. The line between a dream and reality faded. It seems we dammed up the creek (for a waterfall) and flooded the basements up-stream, and hot bunking with 3 to a bed was the norm, and their was the misconception that the drinking age in Walla Walla taverns was 18. I'm familiar with Rogers after working there 3 or was it 4 summers? They did asparagus, peas, carrots, peas & carrots, corn and spinach. Aside from 30 or so full time workers, they hired ±240 summer help. Needless to say, they put a lot of folk through college. Their products were shipped all over the county. Much of it into New Jersey & New York. By the mid-'70s, peas were being raised all over the U.S. and the Walla Walla area processors were struggling to keep the doors open. The real killer for canned vegetables was 'salad bars'. Folk stopped eating veggies and headed to the lettuce and tomatoes. I loved the several jobs I did at Rogers. (Depalletizing empty cans to be filled with product & radio control + I was a scab during a strike in 1968 right before I got married.) I was working 12 hours/day 7 days per week at a rate more than $10/hour + overtime. When the strikers came back to work my $ dropped to $3.40 or so. Just wondering what you told your fellow classmates to have one refer to us as "bad guys." As I recall, we spent most of our time working, sleeping and drinking beer. The long hours were very painful?especially after a 12 hour shift and being assigned to come in early the next day. Day and night became pretty much the same after awhile. Sometimes they broke up the shifts, and I remember taking naps outside of Libby's because it was too much trouble to go back to the "boarding house." I think we made a bit over $2 an hour which seemed pretty good when the minimum wage was $1.25 an hour (in 1963). I remember small Spanish-speaking kids passing the house and taunting us with short phrases that we were sure were curse words although none of us knew for sure. Today I imagine most kids would refuse to do the grueling work that we did. I don't recall any real "entertainment" other than teasing each other and goofing off. QUANE ('63) remembered a lot of the other guys. I think most of us passed each other on the way to and from work on different shifts. I had several jobs. One was operating a big can-dumping machine. Being extremely tired could have resulted in an accident. Luckily, I didn't have any. We had one big kitchen at the house... don't remember what we ate... probably mostly canned goods. Maybe some of the other guys remember some specific events. Tony ('63) and Pitts ('63) may recall a few things. -Frank WHITESIDE ('63) ~ Presently suffering from a lot of very red, itchy fire ant bites... especially on my legs. My industrious mother, never one to let grass grow beneath MY feet, let me sleep in a few hours after being up all night at the Class of '64's graduation party at the old bowling alley above Howard Amon, then hustled me off, still tired, to Dayton to sign up with the Green Giant. Was I ever scared. From the insular world of Richland deep into a whole different culture, surrounded by Mexican Nationals, as they were referred to, from Texas. If memory serves, Tracy RUPP ('64) and David Miller were there with me. At first, I slept in the ramshackle worker huts near the plant, then "graduated" to a house in town, where I rented a bed on a second-floor landing next to the stairs. I remember some old guy had this scratchy old recording of "Cotton-Eyed Joe" he kept playing. Hard to get a good night's sleep on the landing. Like the rest who wrote, I worked 12-hour shifts seven days a week, but I was fortunate to have day shift. First season worked as a loader operator making $1.25 an hour, then the next summer ('65), graduated to swather tractor driver, making the princely sum of $1.58 an hour. Never made enough money to even talk about there, but it was a valuable lesson in persistence and courage. The swather driver job came about thusly: I was waiting in the early hours at job dispatch when the call went out for a swather driver. "I'll go," I said. So off they sent me to the field. I arrived, got on the tractor, and began to fumble around. How do I drive this thing? I'd never been on a tractor in my life, and this one had the transmission reversed, since it was operated backwards. The cranky field boss came over and said, "I thought you told dispatch you could drive this thing." "Nah," I said, "I just said I'd come". He gave me the evil eye and stalked off, whereupon I quickly figured out how to drive it. But he never did like me after that. -Bill SCOTT ('64 --- writing as B J Scott) http://www.bjscotthistoricals.wordpress.com http://www.amazon.com/author/billjscott *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: Oh my Well the sellers of Rooster pills are back at it... now they've got couples in the Bomber Bowl on blankets who don't want to "take time" to take a pill once the "feeling" hits... they are swimming and hot to trot... they are even flying around in parachutes... Suddenly she started screaming and rolling on the ground. We ran out and found her legs covered in tiny ants that looked like the 'sugar ants' that we had grown up with. She was covered in bites and sobbing so hard she could hardly catch her breath. Our neighbor said they were fire ants that bite. Since she is allergic to wasp and bee venom we rushed her to the ER. She was treated the same as our asthmatic son was when he had an attack. The rash of bites was very ugly and painful so she was on medication for about a month. The pest control people came to get rid of the nest and we didn't have any more incidents during the eight months we lived there. We were very watchful whenever outside, though. It is true, boys and girls, the temps did not hit the century mark as some predicted (cloud cover stayed longer than they thought). Eugene made it to 98°, had a 100° on the car going through Curtin, OR on the way back from the coast. But this is the "wet side". Only problem was the humidity, made it almost feel like New Orleans or some other spot on the Gulf Coast. Definitely not the dry heat of the desert Southwest or even the high desert on the East side. On the other hand some weather guessers are calling for 100°+ over the 4th of July week-end. As a result, there may not be any fireworks displays this year (bummer!). -Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ at dry Mount Angel, OR *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Jack GARDINER ('61) Just about a month ago Dick "Buz" BOISONEAU ('61) called to say that he had leukemia. What a shock to both of us. June 3rd they admitted to Kadlec for treatment. They gave him chemo for just over two weeks. He told me he can't have any more because his body is too weak to accept it. He stayed at Kadlec another week to get his strength up... then released him for hospice at home. Saturday night they took him to hospice off Yelm Street in Kennewick. I went to see him today [6/28]... he was feeling better.. glad to see me. He needs your prayers and people in his corner.. -Jack GARDINER ('61) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Helen CROSS Kirk ('62) To: Tim SMYTH ('62) Well, I guess you were right to be worried about the 2 jail escapees being in your area, as both were found and killed in upper New York State. Seems a lot of Bombers had good memories of hard work, but fun times working in the "peas". -Helen CROSS Kirk ('62) ~ Hope, IN where we are fortunate we are not flooded as much of the state is with our continuing heavy rain, but the cooler temperatures are wonderful!! ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. So I put my ball uniform on real quick and went to see him. I left him at 6pm... sometime before 7pm Buz passed. Besides Buz's family and friends, baseball was his first love. He always envied me because I was still able to play. Tonight we beat the number one team in the league 9-7. this game is dedicated to you, my good friend... God Bless!! -Jack GARDINER ('61) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: I am blessed For all of you who are easily bored, time to just skip this post cuz it's gonna be long and disjointed... what they call scream of conshusness... I got home late this morning [6/29] from my yearly trip to Richland and the joy and memories are flooding in... I can't really call it the Sorry 7 or '65er gathering, as it was so very much more and in ways much less... a whole buncha kids didn't make it this weekend but those who did filled it to the brim... I won't go into the trip on Ally-giant but I didn't get to the DQ till around 9 and many kids had split... korse Jimmie ADAIR ('65-'67) and Kathie MOORE ('69) were there in spite of all Kathie has been and is goin' thru... she was a trooper... Friday morning a whole bunch of us met at the Spudnut Shop... Somehow Ron SLEDGE ('65) drove from Vegas and still beat me... John COLE ('66), Larry GREER ('65) and I made plans for the secret get together in the later afternoon (Sorry Roger GRESS ('61) from now on I will give you the high sign)... Katie SHEERAN ('61) showed up in cog neeto (no Kim Novak shirt, but she made up for it Saturday)... we touched base with as many as possible in the heat then around noon we were all gone... Cecilia BENNETT ('65) and I hit the Farmers' Market for some nice breads and smoked salmon which we forgot to put out... as the day progressed Mont ('63) and Jimbeaux ('63) started bringing over chars and ZZ Top hats (a how how how) and CMOORE ('65) and sister Nancy ('70) made their way over... Rosalie ('63) and Chuck arrived and things were getting perfect... now for those of you who missed it and haven't seen the pix on face book... this event had been the subject of months of work by CMOORE, John COLE, Mick HEMPHILL ('66), Gary WEBB ('64) and several others... it was an effort to place Pierre REMILLARD ('65) and Jack KEENEY ('65) in the spotlight to receive Quilts of Valor for their service to our country during the Vietnam War... as time progressed, John was bright enough to realize we needed a mole... at that time John brought Pierre into his confidence to be sure and get Jackson to the church on time... no easy chore I will say... of course he neglected to tell Pete he was being honored as well... Jack, Pierre and Dick STEPHENS ('66) showed up a little early, but they were busy playing tunes and caterwauling... er I mean singing... the crowd began to gether... now sure how I forgot to tell Ken DAME ('68) the procedure, but I did... thankfully he called me early and I told him the plan for the boyz... As he did for my Quilt last summer, Ken got right on the phone and called General Jim MATTIS ('68) who came flying over with a plate of goodies in hand... Steve HAGGARD ('65) became my BFF by showing up with some fruit Rush Limbaugh teas... I hate sweet tea... not any more!... Terry DAVIS ('65) was in awe as he missed my presentation last year... I am pretty sure John CAMPBELL ('63) reacted pretty much to meeting Jim as Mary Lou WATKINS ('63) did last year except he didn't try and shake his hand with a glass of red wine in his hand... oh wait... I'm not supposed to tell that... nevermind, ML! The presentation by John and Mick was superb as always... I was sure KEENEY cried way more than I did, but Carolyn ROE ('63) has assured me that is NOT the case... Jimmie ADAIR (a recipient of a quilt) wanted to impress some people and introduced the General as one of his "Army buddies"... the response was to be expected: "I'm a Marine". Corse only Adair could run over a land mine and get a butt reduction so consider the source... Ellen WEIHERMILLER... THAT'S WEIHEERMILLER ('63) and Doug HAWKINS ('62 also a recipient) made it on time and Doug and I hugged as though we had known each other all our lives... OK OK I did give Ellen a peck onna cheek... OK I gave alla girls at least one peck onna cheek... hey why waste the moment... It was a truly magnificent and touching evening... Eventually I got dinner at Denny's around midnight with Cecilia and the Adairs... Saturday, was early Spuddies again... Katie did her best Kim Novak and I fell in love all over again... Terry DAVIS ('65) brought Craig DAVIS and wife Pat and I was able to catch up with my best Spalding friend ever... Pancakes with the DeJongs was about all I could do in the heat and off I went for a nap... Doug and Ellen went to see the Cows at Katie's, but I missed the field trip again... listening to Katie explain the fine art of washing cow butts was about all I could take (did you know those things just stare at you while they poop!)... I'm sure Oklahoma Doug got a real kick out of it... by the way... if you happen to hook up with Doug, you need to scream in his left ear... but don't mention I told you to... in the evening, the party at Myra WEIHERMILLER's ('67) was intimate and a whole lotta fun... Myra and I played Doug and Ellen in a game of something or other and whooped ass... after the game Myra came running over to me and kerplow... I thought she was trying to jump my bones after all these years, but I learned she was doing a belly bump... I'm told it is whatcha do when you win a game... I liked the bone jumpin' idea better... Sunday was special. I haven't been able to catch Jim STULL ('62) in a couple of years... as you probably know, Jim has been battling cancer since about 2002... Ken DAME ('68) picked the Divine Ms. Hoff ('64) and me up and ran us out to Jim's... Jim looked great and it was so refreshing to spend half a day with him just reliving old times... I wouldn't have missed it for the world. As I said, I am blessed... I no longer use the word "luck"... I have escaped death enough times to know that luck has nothing to do with it. I am sending a picture of the Boyz and General MATTIS with this post. I can only say that no matter the size of our gatherings, she are VERY special events! http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Riv/150630-Boyz-Quilts.jpg Jack KEENEY ('65), Jim MATTIS ('68) and Pierre REMILLARD ('65) -David RIVERS ('65) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Tedd CADD ('66) Re: unusual summer heat Not to be bragging but the Tri-Cities is forecast to have temperatures at least 10 degrees above Death Valley, CA for the next week...
