My condolences to all who were born on this day. Is that really a present, or are you going to prank me? Gotta be worse nor Christmas as a birthday. Fortunately for this Bomber, whom I know, the extra day was well spent. Don't get me wrong, he wasn't "slow". That came later after playing football too long without a helmet. Yeah, so he was a football hero. One has to be one to get along with the girls. So much for the fol-de-rol; a tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!" shout is in store for fellow classmate Lloyd KENT ('54). I mean before they get older and know better... but while yer a kid... yer put upon from every direction... I was convinced, that I was the only kid who didn't have grandparents nearby... boy did I wana go visit grama or have her visit us and bake cookies and pies and all that... well, that was before they came to visit us... dang... these were not the people Mary Lou WATKINS ('63) talks about... now looking back I figure they couldn't a been much more than 60 or so, tho I think she lived to be around 105... they were the most crotchety people I ever met... now the last few days we have been having Richland winds (we had the same thing in Vegas before the town grew to unreasonable proportions... that would be more than say 60,000 people)... my most memorable wind day in Richland involves ol' Grampa and a "kite"... now I am pretty sure that you could buy a kite at Thrifty or Newberry's for somewhere between 5 and 15 cents back in say 1949 or '50... I guess he was trying to play Grampa, cuz this old geezer insisted on making one for me... first he got two pieces of lumber (hadda be at least 2x4s) and some of the heaviest wrapping paper on earth... looking at it I knew it would dig ridges in the ground as I dragged it while I ran trying to get it airborne... well, I was wrong about the ridges but it sure as heck never got in the air... just kinda bounced along the ground... not even sure it hadda tail... so there I was, running along the dike with my 300 pound kite while alla other guys like Butchie GREEN ('65-RIP), prolly Johnny REED ('63wb) and Harvey IRBY ('64) were happily flying their normal kites... oh the shame of it all... now as luck would have it... the sky turned black and then the air turned black and the biggest windstorm of my memory saved me from further trauma... all I can say is I sure hope our b-day Bombers never had such an experience... All you've gotten for the last two days are things from myself or the Junior Gyrene ('65). And, hey, neither of us are winners of the Nadine Brown English Composition Award. For those of you too young to have known her, Miss Brown was a long time English Composition and Favorite Teacher at dear old Col-Hi. That being said, we have the birthday of a Bomber Babe to celebrate today. To say that I knew her back in the day is probably right. She was in the band, and I knew a lot of people who were in the band. So, it stands to reason, I probably knew her even though I wasn't in the band. That's how things rolled back then. Without further ado, a tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!" shout is in order for Janice Booth ('54). In Athena, OR we lived one house away from a large wheat/pea field. A lot of neighborhood kids flew their kites there. First kite I remember my parents bought for me was your standard diamond shaped red paper kite. Don't know where they came from but some of the kids had access to some long strips or heavy cloth or canvas about 2" wide and worked real good for tails. For some reason I came up with the idea of tieing the end of the tail in a knot holding a rock, and that really helped keep it stable. Then some kid threw a dirt clod through my kite. I took it home and my parents fixed it with scotch tape. I think it was the next time I tried to fly it some kid said he would hold it while I ran with the string to launch it. He didn't let go and It was torn to bits. Don't know if he did in on purpose or not, but it ended my kite flying for that year. Later on I discovered box kites and was more successful with them. They were simple, just stick two diagonal crossing sticks in each end lining up the notches and snapping them in; and I had better success flying them. Also I flew them alone or with one or two others not a bunch of kids. Once I had a "Stratosphere Kite." You Google "stratosphere kite" and what comes up is nothing like the one I had. It was one of those promotions where you send in a couple of box tops and a few shekels and what they sent you was basically a plastic garbage bag shaped like a doughnut with four tabs equally spaced on the outside. One tab you could use to blow it up and inflated the outside circle, making it look a doughnut and the hole filled in with a layer of plastic. Then you tied a string to each tab, each running down to a point where the kite string was attached. I guess using air to inflate it and no sticks it was supposed to be lighter and fly to the stratosphere. It worked OK, but nothing special. Then a friend a few houses away and I decided to make a big box kite. We used something like brown wrapping paper only somewhat lighter and a mixture of flour and water for glue. It was probablly about five feet high. One day just as it was starting to get dark my parents and I arrived back home and my friend and his father walked behind the car carrying the busted up kite. They had tried to fly it and the string broke. I was so disappointed that we had built it together and I didn't get a chance to see it fly, or even crash. So I started making another one by myself using brown wrapping paper and making it exactly twice the dimensions as the standard box kite you could buy at that time. That is as far as I got; never did make the sticks. I think it was because I didn't have anything to use for the kite string that I was sure wouldn't break. Kept those paper parts for years though. Lived on an orchard in Milton- Freewater when in Jr. High and I made a box kit to exactly the dimensions as the store bought ones. By then I was able to build a kite at least as good or better than the store-bought ones. A day that was too windy I went out to fly it. I had a big spool of twine that was on a cardboard cone used on sewing machine for sewing the tops of flour sacks after they were filled. I had enough string to reach the jet stream, but, it wasn't strong enough in that wind and after about 15 seconds it broke and the kite probably reached the jet stream on its own. In the basement of the "B" house I remember I had two broken box kites I was going to use the sticks and make another, but I guess I had different interests then... like cars and girls. Don't know what happened to them, guess maybe dad threw them out while I was in the Navy. In the early '80s when my daughter was probably in third or fourth grade we made a trip to the Oregon coast and I went into a kite shop and bought two kites. By then it seemed you just could not buy box kites anymore, which were the only type I seemed to have any luck with. I bought one which is the Wright brothers airplane, it is just sticks and paper which can be displayed, but can also be flown as a kite. My luck with kites I was not going to fly it and just didn't think I had a good place to display it so I still have it in the box unassembled. The other kite was a French war kite which is a three sided box kite with wings. Large ones were built by the French to carry a man into the air and observe German troop movements in the 1800s. I also bought a spool with handles of strong nylon string made for kite flying and was given some good advice; for a kite that powerful, wear gloves. I flew it at least twice. Once in a school play yard and once with daughter and a couple of her girlfriends along the river in North Richland. I think one of the front sides of the box portion of the kite is sewn two long because it wants to dive off to the right. Didn't have great success either time but the second time we ended up going through the reeds and stuff at the water's edge to recover the kite and string. Someone I worked with said put a streamer at the tip on one wing--I think it is the one opposite of the way it wants to dive. Think I broke a stick on it, but as it is nylon instead of paper, should be easy to fix if I get it out of storage after all these years. Yep, when Charlie Brown came along with his "kite eating tree," I said, "That's me!" -Dennis HAMMER ('64) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Linda REINING ('64) David RIVERS ('65) had mentioned grandparents in his entry, yesterday (April 3rd) and I guess I never really thought about how lucky I was that my grandparents were in Richland. When my mom and her two sisters came to Hanford in '44 from Minnesota, their parents came with them... they had been working on the Al-Can Highway... my grandmother did the cooking and washing for some of the men. When the men heard that grandma's daughters were leaving the farm and going to work at Hanford, they asked them to wait. They went home, sold the farm, and they all moved to Richland. My grandfather got a job at Hanford, too... not exactly sure what he did, other than he drove a truck hauling "stuff". My memories of my grandfather aren't many, since he died when I was 5, but my grandmother lived into her 90s, so we(my brother and 5 cousins) were lucky to spend every holiday and every birthday with our grandmother... she had a two-bedroom prefab on Winslow and her house was filled with the aromas of Norwegian "goodies" every Christmas. I don't remember others talking about seeing their grandparents, on a daily or weekly basis, so we must have been "the rarity". Re: kites I remember buying kites at Densow's... probably not more than 15 cents... remember when the "box kites" came out? never could "fly" one of those. -Linda REINING ('64) ~ Kuna, ID ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: twinsies Well, contrary to my story of my Mom's folks yesterday, we all know that there was really good stuff about being kids... for one thing, unlike Terry DAVIS ('65) who will be returning from Michigan tomorrow, we didn't hafta deal with "unfun" snow, that according to him can't even be used for snowballs and kids refuse to play in... we had "fast" snow... snow inna morning, Chinook about noon and awwww gone! Of course we all had chores and some sort of restrictions... my chores were painting the top of the" F" house with some ungodly paint my father prolly got from the Spanish-American War Surplus... I mean not even the Buck Private woulda sold this stuff... you could smell it at the rose bowl I am sure... the fumes were so caustic I would throw up about every ten minutes... just before I would nearly fall from the 90 foot ladder... According to him, it had no smell and it was my maginashun... I don't think my Pop ever bought a liquid for use around the house that didn't smell to high heaven... then there was the rock garden... every spring I moved his rock garden from one spot to another... I felt about the rock garden much as Mr. Roberts felt for the Captain's palm tree... wait... maybe it was Ensign Pulver who hated the Palm tree... I think Roberts just the the damned thing overboard at the end of the movie... anyway, that's the idea... According to my Pop (and I have no reason to think he wasn't telling me the truth) He said Patton made them move rocks in the desert over by Yuma or somewhere to prepare them for the battle in Africa... I might have thought rifle or tank practice might serve better, but then what would he say about the rock garden... we also had certain prohibitions placed upon us... the way we acted around growed ups and toward them was very important... I wasn't allowed to hang out much at night (except at the park across the street) which I must say in my folks' favor, kept me from going to jail at a young age along with a number of my buds (names omitted to protect the guilty), but for the most part, along with so many others, the street lights told us the time... corse that all changed when we got licenses and cars but that's another story... we gots some very special Bomber-babes celebrating today... a couple a twins who, contrary to popular belief were borned a year apart on the 4th rather than the third... and one young thing who was snagged, much as the ever young and lovely Miss Nancy ('65) (coincidentally she is named Nancy too... or perhaps those guys from the Gold Medal class just liked the name)... by an "older man"... Some where in my travels I had gotten a WWII target kite. It had German insignias and a Swastika on it. It was about 5 feet across and maybe 8 feet tall. It had a wooden reel of twine that was about 5 inches thick. It was a bear to get in the air, but once up it flew well. So we are at the kite contest and my son had won the largest kite now he was after the highest flying award. After some struggle we got in the air but then the parents had to back away and let the kids fly the darn things. About the time The kit was maxing out a strong wind came up and my son in order to hold the kite had wrapped the twine around his wrist to anchor it. The wind drug him about 75 yards before I could catch up to him. I had to cut the twine and the kite fluttered off and I had some explaining to do when I got the scared and dirty kid home. I had more fun than the kid. -Rex HUNT ('53wb) ~ from lovely downtown Hanford, CA ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Dennis HAMMER ('64) To: David RIVERS ('65) Re: Mr. Roberts trivia Actually both Mr. Roberts and Ensign Pulver threw the palm tree overboard. First Mr. Roberts throws the tree over the side, then he is transferred off the tub to a combat unit he had been trying to get. As he was leaving the crew presents him with an over-sized medal they made for him consisting of a brass palm tree hanging from a gawdy ribbon. He pins it on as he is leaving the ship. Later on, mail call brings a letter from Mr. Roberts saying how much better he likes it on his new ship is and that he is so proud of his "Order of the Palm Tree" he would rather have it than the "Medal of Honor." Then they open another letter and learn that Mr. Roberts was killed in action. This makes Ens. Pulver so mad he goes up to the bridge wing and throws over the Captain's replacement palm tree. When I was in the Navy a shipmate told us that during WWII the author of the novel "Mister Roberts" had served aboard his former ship the USS Virgo which was an attack cargo ship. He told us that because of that the USS Virgo had a palm tree painted on the bulkhead by the door going into the bridge. One day it was tied up on the other side of a pier from us and he pointed it out. Guess I should have taken a picture. -Dennis HAMMER ('64) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Linda REINING ('64) David RIVERS ('65) had mentioned chores, in yesterday's (April 4th) Sandstorm and said that we all had them... yep, and mine was keeping my room clean and my bed had to be made every day (I still make my bed, as soon as I get up) and helping clean the rest of the house... am sure all "we girls" had the same chores, along with anything else our moms could find for us to do. We had linoleum in the bedrooms (3), bathroom, kitchen and utility rooms... only room that had carpet was the living room and my mom was a "stickler" for the floors being scrubbed clean and no using a mop either... on your hands and knees, bucket of hot water filled with Spic 'n Span... then another bucket filled with clean hot water for rinsing and we waxed those blasted floors every week too! The old wax was scrubbed off with SOS pads, then that residue was "mopped up"... then you washed the floor with the Spic 'n Span, then once the floor was dry you put down another fresh coat of wax! And this was done EVERY Saturday before any "fun" time... same routine was done in the kitchen too except in there the stove would be unplugged as would the fridge, they would be moved to the center of the room so that area could be cleaned! To say my mom was a "clean freak" was putting it mildly. Did I keep that routine when I got my own home????? Uh, NO! Used a mop... left the stove and fridge right where they were... figured the "dust bunnies" could enjoy themselves; as for waxing... only did it, when it was necessary... usually stripped the wax, every month instead of every week. David also mentioned the movie, "Mr. Roberts" and the palm tree incident... it was Ensign Pulver (Jack Lemon) who threw the palm tree overboard after they had gotten word that Mr. Roberts (Henry Fonda) had been killed when the ship he was on was hit by a torpedo. One of my favorite movies and I watch it whenever it's on TCM. -Linda REINING ('64) ~ Kuna, ID ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: what a great place Let me say that I was so sorry to hear of Leslie HUTCHISON's ('63) passing the day before her Special Day! Once upon a time... oh no... nobody starts stories like that any more... Oh wait... first lemme bow to the prowess of Dennis HAMMER ('64) on his kite flying skills... I could NEVER get a box kite to fly!... So as I was saying... Once upon a time there was a call far and wide seeking people to come to Eastern Washington where the Columbia, the Snake, and the Yakima rivers all converged... the land of milk and honey, it sounds like to me... come and learn a trade the ads promised and they came... in fact, near whole towns from what I've been told headed west... now imagine if you will... the kids that came with those folks... specially if one was a Jr or a Sr at his old school... and even worse if he was a sports star... now that must have sucked, but there were also those who were just starting school or were maybe just a few years along... these families and their children were the beginning of something magical (a Magical mystery tour if you will)... Eventually children would be born at various facilities and finally our own Ed QUIGLEY ('62) would be the first Kadlec baby... then more would come, including the Sorry 7, only five of which were actually borned there (but that's another story)... workers would get on busses, disappear for hours and then return to pee in bottles left in canisters on the front porch... winds of unknown proportions would be common occurrence and eventually the Columbia would flood... but more importantly, the workers would learn what they had produced and a new comradery would immerge that took the whole town with it giving rise to "We are the Bombers, mighty, mighty Bombers... " A powerhouse in Basketball and just an all round great place to be... a town where no one locked their doors and keys were even left in cars without mishap... now who would ever believe such a place could exist... We could... we who grew up in that little town and became proud of it beyond belief... tho many left to go to school or find jobs elsewhere, including stints in the military... very few would stay away for long... oh sure... just like any little town... the initial reaction was "we gotta get outa this place"... but the attraction remained and remains for so very many of us... It is home and we are Bombers, Mighty, Mighty Bombers... whether we continue to live there full time or not... for the most part... we always return... today's B-day bomber-babe was one who returned to live... in fact I recall the day or close to it that she did... I think I learned of it on face book... but it coulda been in this little paper of ours... so HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Mary MASSEY ('64) on your special day, April 5, 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -David RIVERS ('65) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Brad WEAR ('71) Re: MLK, Jr. I can't believe anyone, let alone me, missed the tragic anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. Truly a great man. He joined the Coast Guard in '52 in California, having tried his hand at getting into the movies. Draft was after him. He had been in a few "B" movies. When "Mr. Roberts" was casting, Adamshock was a radioman 2nd class aboard a small USCGH ship in San Diego. He somehow got in to see the "Mr. Roberts" director - wearing his uniform - and got into the movie with a pretty good role, quite a few speaking scenes. Had the stage name "Nick Adams". The Coast Guard gave him leave for the "location" shots in Hawaii. Adams went on to a fairly successful career - "Rebel Without a Cause", etc. and a TV series he "created", a western called Johnny Yuma. His brashness got him started with the part in "Mr. Roberts", a movie he loved... Adamshock died young, supposedly from a mixture of alcohol and a drug supposed used to keep him from drinking. In his early USCG years, he hardly drank at all - maybe one beer when we went "honky tanking." He palled with James Dean, some with Elvis Presley. So I'm a day late and a dollar short, but I gotta echo the sentiments for the loss of one heluva singer... as many will recall, in the early days of Richland, the music pickins wuz mighty slim (arf arf... get it... Slim Pickens... )... for the most part as I recall, Bob Wills wuz still the King and that wuz 'bout it... I remember when Rock 'n' Roll reared its cool head sitting at my little short wave radio with Craig DAVIS ('65) and Keith PETERSON ('65) searching the waves for that one R 'n' R song to pop up... that was way before Lynn BRYSON ('57) and the Real Don Steele (NAB) hit the air... now I guess all that hill billy stuff got kids to either love it or hate it... I thought I hated it but it stuck with me my whole life... I wuz still listening to guys like Willie when he hadda flat top, Waylon when he hadda duck tail... and ol Conway hadn't decided if he wuz country or Rock 'n' Roll... The Hag was at the toppa my list... I was fortunate enuff to be invited to his Birthday party at the Hilton close to 20 years ago (it was probably his 60th Birthday)... 60 seemed mighty old at the time... Dwight Yoakum was probably the youngest guy there... but Dick Clark looked younger than everyone else... I remember up around Coos Bay I think... I found what I decided was the "perfect" Merle Haggard hat... I bought it and plopped it on my head... grinnin' like I wuz somebody... now I musta just had a spat with the girl I wuz with cuz she gave me a look and said: "Well, you ain't no Merle Haggard"... never wore that damned hat again! One thing about losin' singers... we always got the Music... Re: pool Getting about time to open the cement pond for the summer, so I needed to get busy and fix the multiport valve on top of the sand filter. It was leaking last summer so I ran a hose back to the pool. They no longer make the model I have. I mentioned rebuilding the valve. Lady at the pool store asked if I would be able to do that and I said that if I could rebuild '50s and '60s V8 engines I should be able to rebuild a valve. I figured I would just wait until I closed the pool and do it in the winter time. Finally got a "round tuit" and ordered the parts from Amazon.com and it took almost no time to put it together. Thought I would need some help aligning the holes, pushing the spring and putting on the handle, but put it back together making sure the hole in the plug aligned with the hole in handle and the handle was in a position where it was lower before bolting the top assembly on to the lower assembly. It helped that it was designed idiot-proof. That was a term we used when I was a mechanical designer for designing things so there was only one way to put it together. Trouble is... you can't really make anything idiot-proof because idiots are just too ingenious. I have come across at least two cases where they managed to do it. I took me less time to rebuild that valve than it did to put it on the filter and hook up the pipes. If I had know it was that quick and easy I would have done it last summer. I saved some money there, but the big thing was... with a replacement valve I would have to re-plumb the three 1 1/2 PVC pipes going to the valve and I really did not want to do/or pay for that. Re: Dandelions Are we having a bumper crop of dandelions in the Tri-Cities this year? It is not just my yard, it seems to me like all over there are many more than usual. I wanted to use some in my dandelion post so I went to his yesterday's Sandstorm and I lifted ten of them from his post. All I had to do was copy and paste. I should be OK though because I think once they are posted in the Alumni Sandstorm they are in the public domain. I would ask our Sandstorm Barrister for a legal opinion, but I don't think I have enough exclamation points to pay his fee!!!!! -Dennis HAMMER ('64) ~ Money talks! All mine says is "Good-bye." ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Tedd CADD ('66) That's OK David RIVERS ('65). I don't use ellipses very often and if Staples runs out, I'll just use three periods. I can even salvage some colons and semi-colons for extra periods and commas. And, of course, there's always the idea of recycling them if I need to. I notice that there is a super-abundance of apostrophes and commas world-wide. So many, in fact, that people have resorted to putting them in places where they have no business being. Like the sign I saw on one of the nurseries here locally: "We have pansie's." Of course, the question be becomes, "What do you have that belongs to Pansie?" If anybody would like to read a fantastic book on punctuation that is written to entertain (and does it well), try "Eats, Shoots & Leaves" by Lynne Truss. The title comes from a joke about a Panda. The Panda goes into a bar and orders a sandwich and a beer. When he is finished, he gets up, pulls out a pistol and fires a shot into the ceiling. He starts out the door and the bar tender says, "Hey! Wait a minute. What was that all about?" The panda says, "I'm a panda." "Yeah... So?" "Look it up," says the panda and throws a nature book at him. He looks up the entry on pandas and reads, "The panda eats, shoots and leaves." Of course, the joke is the comma after the word "eats" changes the meaning of the sentence. Truss's book is full of amazing real-life experiences of signs and letters and more where people said things they really didn't mean to say. Consider putting two commas in this sentence: "Woman without her man is nothing." "Woman, without her, man is nothing." "Woman, without her man, is nothing." Where should the second comma go? Or maybe there should be a comma in this sentence: "Let's eat Grampa." Ignore my lame repetition of two old saws on punctuation. Lynne is far more creative. -Tedd CADD ('66) ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. Ah, springtime in Richland. If you were from Minnesota, as I was, it was a delight, no snow, 75° and up. Take in the sun and enjoy. Think also about a fine new school on a hill. In that month that we moved from the dilapidated old school in that south end to that new school, Richland High, nee Columbia High or Col-Hi. There were about 300 of us, very crowded in our old digs, to rattling around in the new building meant for about 1000. The main hallway was very long from the auditorium on the north end, which was finished, back to the gym on the other end, which was not. There were a couple of wings running out to the west Looking at today's school, I don't believe an original plank still exists Our teachers were gleaned from wherever, and some were not quite adequate, while others were very good, none seemed just average. We began some traditions which exist to this day, The student council was very active. They took the imitative to ban other school letter sweaters and it was enforced. A Girls' League was formed. Also a Drama Club which actually put on a play, "Brother Goose" on a broken down stage in the old school. There was a twenty member Glee Club including only two boys. There was also a fairly large band which was loud, but managed to keep its beat, sort of. Also an annual yearbook staff, which got the info, but failed to publish. That was taken care of by Club 40 in 1990. Best of all, we had our lively newsletter, The Rocket, published right away, in August, 1943. It was the precursor of the Sandstorm and was named after that which many then believed was being built at Hanford. In sports we cheered our basketball team, which played in the Lewis and Clark Gym. They were pretty mediocre, but they did beat Pasco once, much to our delight. Without a gym, the phys ed classes were bussed down to Lewis and Clark grade school where we went through exercises led by our teach "Pop" Lehman who retired early being a little old to handle us, You folks might have seen him around the Post Office in later years .Anyway, at the end we did laps, and one day, being a little tired, I hid behind a tree. Someone ratted me out, so Pops forced me to jog back to school. While the bus was loading I jumped on the back bumper and hung on to the door. My buddies sat in the back seats so the driver, Pops, and the tattler were obscured. I watched for cops, and managed to hang on till we arrived. It was more fun than jogging. All was part of student life in those long ago days. -Dick McCOY (from the Tin Can class of nineteen and forty five) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) To: Messers Hammer ('64) and CADD ('66) Re: Punctuation marks Staples is not thee place to go for punctuation marks, especially exclamation marks (!). Fifth Regiment is the most decorated regiment in Marine Corps history. We have been around a while. Those who find themselves in this regiment at any time, find themselves at first in a very disturbing place. Then reality sets in and it gets worse. I found this important at the time. Nevertheless, as time fades, I find that notso. I have talked to Marines at Camp Pendleton who were in this outfit in Iraq. Guess who the USMC command was while there. Our General James MATTIS ('68). One of the former Marines who was in Kilo 3/5 in Vietnam before I got there had a son in the Fifth Regiment (3/5) in Fallujah during the second time in the city. I was in Pendleton for the award presentation when this young corporal was awarded a Silver Star for action in that city. During a conversation, the corporal said Marines would go anywhere with the General. True story. I would say with that note, the General ('68) should be our Commandant and would be if it were not for the fools we have running this country. 'Nuff said (I learned this from David '65 - 'nuff said !!!). I say this as a former Marine. While serving during war, Marines have no politics. Matter of fact, the only holiday we know is Nov. 10. Beyond that, we are told where we are going and who we are killing. The truth hurts. Don't believe any other thing you are told. Where was I? Oh... I already had quite a few men sign the book who I had served with during the war. Well, I had one WWII vet sign it, but it was King Company then; before they changed all the fandango lingo in the '50s to Alpha, Bravo, Charlie... R.V. Burgin. RV was our Kilo Company treasurer for years. Still kickin' it in Texas. I posted a pic of him several years ago. A survivor of Peleliu. Bronze Star. Wrote Island of the Damned. Contributor of the eight part Tom Hanks HBO movie - The Pacific. He is one of the speakers during the show. Oh... I had no idea how to really get hold of the Skipper via online, not necessarily because I'm stooped, but just uneducated within the confines of the internet proto, how to, learning curve, so I just looked up FedEx and found some person within their large list of company portals, or whatever they are called, i.e., shipping, ground, air, etc. etc. to forward the email to their boss. I then forgot about the whole escapade after days went by. Fruitless endeavor is a word that comes to mind. And then... lo and behold... about six weeks, or so, I get this email from Fred Smith at FedEx telling me to send him the book and he would be happy to sign a book for one of his men. He did not know me, but he knew of me. He had lost a platoon commander by the name of John Ruggles, III, who was my platoon commander. I was only a statistic on an H&S daily report from the Remington Raiders. I have a copy of that. My name is not on that report. The report only states 3rd platoon has three... here, you can look at it. An old document, but hey. It is what it is. Company commanders do not forget the dead and wounded for the rest of their lives. Trust me. I take the book and the email copy from the Skipper that contains a long line of numbers and give it to this young lady at the desk and tell her I have this email with a lot of numbers from her boss and I am supposed to give it to her. She looked at me like any ordinary person does talking to a normal insane person from southern California and said her boss was not there right at the moment. I said no, I'm sorry, I mean your real boss. She looked at it a little closer and said, "Oh." She put the book into a large FedEx mailer and said, thank you. I asked how much was my bill. She said it was taken care of. I said thank you. About three days later I have a FedEx delivery man with my book in hand... signed, sealed, delivered. Why did I tell you this story? Would somebody please tell Maren my address has changed. I would like somebody, anybody, to please tell whomever is in charge of address change at the front office of the Online Sandstorm to please let Maren know I need my address changed to olekukahi@yahoo.com for my daily and hopefully before Google buys them. Your old CO helped a group I'm with here in Dallas: SteakTeamMission.org Several years ago. We grill steaks for the various branches of the service in combat zones, and non-combat zones. FedEx had a shipping station in Afghanistan at Camp Bastion. It was right off the runway. We usually utilized American Airlines to ship our gear over to Afghanistan or Iraq, but the 2013 trip FedEx stepped up and took all of our gear except the 1200 (originally 2000) steaks we were shipping over. AA shipped those for us as they had dry ice replenishment capabilities in London. Too bad FedEx didn't take those as 800 were confiscated in Kuwait as a "tax" by a corrupt official. We were going to grill for the Brits too, but they lost out due to the "tax". Smith was the driving force behind getting our gear there. "Make it happen"! (Stole an ! From David). Our own Jim MATTIS ('68) greased the skids for me to handle the logistics. He hooked me up with Joe Dunford, then Asst. ommandant. Amazing what two Four-Star Generals can do. The previous owner and several other owners in my small cul-d- sac do no weed control. I bought the house in 1995 and have battled the weeds and the moss every year. I have received lots of advice from professionals that works for maybe one year. But the next spring they are back in grand form. Last year I brought in a machine and ripped up 12 large yard trash bags of moss from my front yard alone. I am talking about bags that fit a 55 gal drum. The yard was essentially all moss. This was the third time I have done that. My fireworks company owns 32 acres of industrial zoned land and there are several large deep holes for unknown purpose. We have filled 2 of them with yard waste. Yes I have paid professionals ungodly amounts of $ to eradicate the moss. They are well less effective than I am. Years ago when I had the three Equipment Rental stores I attended several classes on "Turf Development and Maintenance". I had numerous landscape professionals who rented machines from me. One thing I learned was that good thick turf will choke out many weeds and moss. In the past I have not had the time to develop the turf. Howsomever...... I have 10 more days to work at Entertainment Fireworks. Yes I intend to concentrate on my landscape. I enjoy planting and growing and hopefully having more than a few hours a month will make some difference. And yes the rumor is true... I started another company. Pyro Consultants, LLC. We used to get it snail mail, but the times, they are a changed. It is a small world, indeed. Semper Fi, Pappy! I have always been impressed with Fred Smith. Particularly after the war. I really knew nothing about him while there. I avoided rubbing elbows with brass at all costs. Later finding out who he was. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth, really. His father had Greyhound buses running several states in the southeastern U.S., if memory serves me. Smith's father died when he was young and I imagine he could have most likely escaped the war, but he did not. Jumped right into the middle of it. Built FedEx off money he had inherited from his father and an idea from his school days at Yale; before Vietnam. More important, he will stop working at a moment's notice when it comes to 'his men.' Smith gave Heath (one of several Marines who put me on the medevac) a job when Heath was struggling here in SoCal. Knoxville, Tennessee dedicated a little league baseball field after my platoon commander, 2Lt. Ruggles. Smith spoke at the dedication of the field. Pic of me standing on the mound in 2005. http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Mad/160418-Maddy-Knox-2005.jpg To: Others Vets We had been running patrols off Anderson bridge on a every other day rotation about six miles SSW of DaNang. This meant I could sleep within the wire in my hole in the ground every third day vs. the jungle and being eaten alive by insects, among other things. I was with Third Platoon. We were small platoons at the time. I was a fresh replacement and they just could not fill a full-on Marine Corps platoon and never did while I was there. Two and three man fire teams, not four, etc. Two squad patrols out in different directions, usually night, and like the enemy, setting up ambushes. One squad on the bridge at all times. Spent a month doing that duty. People like to try and blow up bridges during war. We had a tank, and they tried blowing that up one night with 122mm rockets and mortars. Adventurous place. There ARE things on my mind both off and on that bridge I would never talk about except to Mac, Heath, Hole, Basteeen, Shu; men I served with and talk to regularly. On Feb. 6, '68 we lost seven men in Second Platoon after they had been ambushed not far from the bridge coming out of the CAP by a company of NVA; Hole and Shu are two survivors of that melee. There were less than eighteen men in the platoon (a normal amount of a large squad, not a platoon). A squad gets bigger as you add radioman, Corpsman, gunner, a-gunner, blooper (M79 40mm grenade launcher), etc. etc.; weapons platoon and such. SSGT Bagget was awarded a Navy Cross for his actions as the squad leader. Shu told me he should have gotten the MOH. Bagget was one who lost his life there. I visit Shu from time to time. Lunch in Newport Beach. I have met five of the survivors. They had actually gotten into hand-to-hand. My squad left the bridge to do a walk through of the area looking for any gear two days after. I was never the same after that day. My fear level, already at critical because of the bridge, worsened. Then Hue City started happening. We were put on Chinooks, man did I hate being on that chop (!!!). Choppers came down in bunches during this time. I did not join the Corps to be on a boat or in the air. We were taken to a place known as Phu Gia Pass about thirty-five miles SSE of Hue City off Highway 1. We were looking for Vietnamese Communists (a Marine Corps Lite term for the enemy - we had several other names, of course - Senator McCain took a hit for using one) that were blowing up trucks and snipers shooting at any targets they could muster. The job was running flanking patrols off the highway looking for these people. Well, one day they got lucky and found us first with their traps. Lots of traps everywhere around this place. Tet of 1968 was an odd time. Very little slack time during this period. Day after day of something going wrong. A different time, a different war, nevertheless, SOS, day in and day out somewhere, every damn day ... even today and tomorrow. A lot of people do not like war stories. I will never write a book on the subject. I wasn't there long enough anyway to know anything useful about war? I should write a book about Army and Navy hospitals. I spent a year in those. A week in critical care in DaNang until I could travel. Five weeks in the 239th Army General Hospital (something like that) at Camp Drake, a joint US Army/Air Force base in Saitama, just outside Tokyo, Japan. I was there because they had an infectious amputee ward. This is where I think I acquired my Post traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and years of sleep disorders, anger, short-fused. There were at least thirty of us in the ward. I don't even know how to describe this place. Screams in the night and wheelchair races during the day. Strung out on Demerol. Camp Drake and the old Bremerton Navy hospital have been razed. Before I go, just one reminder to combat veterans ... I was in the Spokane VA hospital in 1992 when I was asked by a doctor if I knew of PTSD. No. Out of curiosity, and because of a host of ill fitting behaviors that had been on my mind for years, I was given an appointment with a VA shrink. I show up and without any conversation I recall, gives me a 100 question PTSD test - True- False, Yes-No Q's. Back to school? Test? I did not want to take this. I found it to be stupid. Things come to mind that Maren would have to edit out. So, instead of wadding the paper up and throwing it in this shrink's face, I decided to answer all the Q's with the opposite feeling/answers. I failed the test. I did not have PTSD. Goodbye beer money. I saved the VA, Feds, taxpayers and all a big wad of cash. See Ya. I never talked to a shrink about the war, including the Bozo at Spokane. Who needs them, when I have you? Although I am 100% disabled with the loss of use of both hands, I was denied PTSD by the Veterans Administration because in 2009, during one of my 'are you un-disabled yet' meetings I refused to go see the shrinks. Things had changed drastically and the government was passing out PTSD like candy on Halloween. The VA is NOT fair and balanced. Trust me. Now they are back-stepping on these awards I hear and on some sort of witch hunt. Oh well. One thing is for sure ... you do not go, you do not receive. You will not hear anything from these people. Nothing. Need help? Walk into a VA hospital emergency room (without a gun, please) and tell the person at the desk you need help. There is still a chance you might get some. This would be worth your while vs. the alternative. Or move on as best you can. I should stop here. I walked out of the Bremerton Navy Hospital on Jan. 31, 1969. Sixteen operations. Never looked back. Thanks again, Brad. -Rick MADDY ('67) ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. I think it was the Senior Squid who asked about the 5th Marines... H 2/5 was the Company portrayed in Full Metal Jacket... another company of 2/5 (I don't recall which) was portrayed in Battle of Los Angeles... so I guess you could call the 5th Marines "Hollywood",but I wouldn't do it within earshot of any Marine who served with the 5th Marines... now... speaking of MADDY ('67)... I am always happy when he lets the pressure valve open a little... very few of you know Rick's full story and I would not presume to tell it... I can tell you that Rick lent a hand one day when a buncha my Finkster buddies and I wuz broke down in Huntington Beach a while back... we then met Rick on the pier for brunch... now two a the guys had never seen the Pacific ocean so that kept them busy... Magoo and I sat with Rick for a long time... Magoo and Rick were like two long lost pals... Now Magoo was in the very first batch of Frogs to go by the name of SEAL... I mean the first of Team One... Magoo did 5 tours in Vietnam and even lead the raid on the Winslow AZ clotheslines for Levis they would use in Nam... Magoo's wounds shoulda sent him home for good, but he kept going back... all that to end up beating the crap outa some ossifer and getting a less than honorable... now I can fully understand his behavior as I did the same to some FNG S/Sgt in Vietnam... split his forehead wide open all over a can of beer I had hiked a fer piece to get only to arrive as beer call was ending... luckily the silly SOB didn't get up... there were no witnesses to Magoo's "crime" but he fessed up... anyway... the point of all this is that Magoo thinks that Rick walks on water... I guess I do too... from his posts and our talks I think that Rick has accepted the cards he was dealt... but it's still good to let it out now and then... I am proud to be his friend... soooooooooooo now let's get back to the main subject... a tattooed, Best ex, Christ the King, Bomber-babe who keeps us all connected... I killed off all of the moss in my entire yard, and had new grass growing and I was so proud of myself. However, within one year, that moss had returned with a vengeance, and was even thicker (how this is possible, I know not) and greener than ever before. After hearing similar tales of woe from friends and coworkers, as well as from those who had successfully won the moss war, I decided to make my peace with the moss, declaring my lot a sanctuary yard, a moss safe haven, or in other terms NOT a DMZ (de-mossified zone), for the moss to happily grow in without fear. I agreed not to attempt to kill the moss off, and it in turn agreed to 1) keep me from ever touching the glacial till underneath which gets everything all kinds of muddy for 9 months of the year; 2) preventing 99% of the weed seeds blown in from the neighbors' yards from ever germinating; 3) staying lush green for most of the year; and 4) quickly returning to green after not getting watered over the sometimes-dry summer months. Of course, I could do the proper thing and add drainage to the yard. But having a half-remodeled 1977 house, I can't justify spending the time or money to fix the drainage (see below) before the front room gets flooring put in. Moss should be considered a symptom, not the root cause. And, much like medicine, if you merely treat the symptoms without addressing the underlying cause, you will be a rich pharmaceutical company (ba-da boom, I'll be here all week)! The root cause is poorly-draining soil. The solution is to improve drainage which can often involve buried trenches filled with drain rock and a collection system, along with a layer of sand or other porous material, topped with landscaping fabric, covered with topsoil, on top of which your nice, new, moss-free grass grows. So that's my inflation-adjusted $.06 on moss and what works for me. Re: Spinal tumor So many Bombers have had similar things happen to them and have gotten a wonderful feedback from other Bombers. Now, I have something that I would like to hear back from those Bombers who might know of someone's treatment or had this same thing happen to them. My MRI in March shows a "redemonstration of circumscribed extrameduilary/intradural mass within the spinal canal at the T-11 - T-12 level, demonstrating homogeneous intense enhancement on post contract images resulting in moderate to severe spinal evidence to suggest cord edema. Meningioma versus neurogenio turmor such as schwannorna". In other words, I have a tumor in the spinal canal. I was referred to a neurosurgeon in Richland, Dr. Fewel. He was wonderful and has left things up to me as to whether or not I want surgery or wait and see! If symptoms of weakness in legs and arms comes about later on, surgery will not reverse this. The spinal cord is being pushed aside and the tumor has taken up about 70% of the spinal column. Doctor is surprised that I don't have any symptoms now, with this happening. He said I have had this tumor for years. It is a slow growing, benign mass and they don't know how it comes about or when. I am going to Harborview in Seattle for a second opinion in May. I just want to hear what another doctor says. If surgery is the answer, I would prefer to be in the Tri-Cities. I am writing this to also hear from anyone who has experienced this sort of thing, because I do know it is a common tumor. With my research, I have found out that this tumor only appears in the brain or the spinal column. In fact, my eldest daughter had this tumor on her brain and after 10 years had to have surgery 2 years ago and is doing great. She, of course, is 20 yrs younger. Age is the question, now for me. Not knowing a person's life expectancy, do you do it now, or wait until it has done more damage. Okay, Bomber friends, what do you know about this sort of thing?? Another, thing, I have NO pain and this was found by accident when my lower back was checked by another doctor!! Same with my daughter, she had a MRI for a concussion and they found it!! Wonder how many people are running around with one?? Don't wish this on anyone!! Thanks for listening, (reading)! A few facts about Mel that I'm sure many of you don't know: He was elected Senior Class President, named to the All Valley Football Team and was the first Richland football player to be named to the All State Football Team. Mel attended WSU (that is what it was called then) and he lettered in football and boxing and received his bachelor's and master's degrees in physical Education with an interruption for a year and a half while he served with the US Army engineers in Korea during the Koran War. He was awarded the DiGivonni award at WSU for outstanding Student athlete His coaching career began in Othello , then after 4 years on to Kennewick. Then he moved on to Central Wash. State College where his team was the undefeated United Evergreen Conference Champ. His team was ranked 10th nationally and he was named Coach of the Year by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, AAIA District 1. Mel and the team were named to the Hall of Fame at Central. His old high school football coach, from Texas, Tom Tipps was at the U of W and while talking to Mel on the phone at Ellensburg he asked Mel if he would like to coach at the U. Of course Mel said yes and he was the Freshman football coach his first year at the U. He went on to become Defensive Coordinator on Jim Owen's team For 8 years. After the 1978 Rose Bowl he became first director of recruiting and student services. Mel was then placed on the committee to hire a replacement for Jim Owens. He always claimed Don James was his best recruit. The only sad part he could never beat Rish while he coached Kennewick. Mel was known as an inspirational and motivational speaker and spoke at many of the high school banquets throughout the state. Another interesting tidbit, while driving home from a high school reunion at Othello he said "Do you know that our lives have been nothing but a POKER game" I asked, "why" and he said "Look where we have lived Pullman, Othello, Kennewick, Ellensburg and Redmond. The first letter of each city spells POKER. I told him that was why he was a winner. Our family had 3 kings (Mel and 2 sons) and 2 queens (our daughter and me) that makes a full house - a winning hand. Next month will be 20 years since he passed away with congenital heart failure. Just thought I would like to do a little bragging about Mel, since he always told everybody he wanted to be an engineer but I wanted to be married to a football coach so he took up coaching. He most likely would have been a great engineer too. -Ann Thompson, aka Anna May WANN ('49) ~ from nice sunny Bothell, WA ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) Re: 5th Marines The nickname of "Hollywood" was appended to the 5th sometime before WW 2, which was before there were Marine Divisions. Dan Haggard has agreed to assist on the nominating committee and will be available to receive anyone's name who is interested in serving on any of the four (4) elected positions in Club 40. His e-mail is d-haggard@charter.net You can also send your information to me. I announced that I will not be running for re-election of President in the 2016-17 election, which will be held on September 10, 2016. I am hoping to hear from some of the younger alumni and we are always wanting to have new people join our membership. So... If you are so inclined to be of assistance in serving on the Board as President, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer, please let Dan or myself know. Remember the September 9th and 10th party registration form will be included in the Dust Storm and there will be a deadline to get it in to our Treasurer. NO WALK INS will be allowed. A casual Friday night is planned and a "sit down dinner" again on Saturday night with some yummy dinner choices. And of course, a "live" band. Register as early as you can as we have a limit to how many we can bring in to the Red Lion-Richland. Fire Marshall doesn't allow us to overcrowd!! Also, Club 40 presents four, $1,000.00 scholarships to Richland High School seniors and the presentation for those awards will be at the high school auditorium on May 19 at 6:30 p.m. All scholarships are handed out that night and it is open to the public. A very interesting night to see the senior students who are being honored. In the past years more that 5 million dollars has been awarded on that night! Impressive!!! Come if you can and see how these well deserving students are rewarded. -Marilynn WORKING Highstreet ('54), Club 40 President ~ Pasco where it has cooled down and windy. ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Jim "Pitts" ARMSTRONG ('63) Re: Lonnie Mack Passes For the great "Blues Rock" guitar slinger, Stevie Ray's idol and my personal favorite. Sad to hear of the Passing of Lonnie Mack (NAB)... we often tend (well of course Pitts ('63) doesn't) to cubbie hole artists as was often the case with Lonnie and "Memphis" which I understand was recorded in Chuck Berry's home... hey ever tall ya bout the night my wife and I was drinking with Paul Revere, Mark Lindsey and Chuck and Chuck was buying drinks for my wife thinking he had scored... prolly huh... no score... so now where wuz I... dang I get distracted easily... Just 16 years ago at R2K the Bomber B-day babe was inna wheel chair cheerleading and as time passed she grew stronger and stronger... at the Gold Medal 40th or 45th, she was all dolled up in a red slinky dress and ruby slippers and made me swooooon all night... since then her health has had its ups and downs but no matter what we call each other about every other week to check in... now I'm not a phone guy as people (speshally girls) know... more than a minute and I start sweating and looking for the door... but she and I still manage... I love this girl better than any sister I never had and just love spending time with her... sometimes I think her other half looks at me with a john-diced eye, but it is all friendly... cozy but friendly... Had to look through a few Columbians to get a "recklemember" of her. We graduated the same year, but I'm not sure we knew each other. I know (I think) we didn't have classes together. Ignatius' article was quoted a couple other times in the WAPO. As one can read, the suggestion was not a run by General MATTIS but a reflection on one possible way the GOP could get itself out of the hole they've dug for themselves. By the way, there is another article in the Daily Beast. -Tedd CADD ('66) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Ken STALEY ('68) Re: General Jim I was fortunate enough to email Jim several times during his career. As a school boy, his dream was to be the Commandant of the Corps, not just a Marine or officer, but top dog. When he got his 4th star I asked if he was ready for the top job. His response was 3 words long... "O Hell NO!" His career was varied. His worst assignment was as a Captain serving in Wash DC. in 1983. Most will recall the terrorist blast that killed more than 200 Marines. His job, as a captain, was to deliver the bad news to families. During Desert Storm 2, he was a one star commanding the 1st Marine division as they invaded Fallujah, Iraq. I can tell you that he and Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld butted heads big time. At the time I was sure he was ready to hang it up then. When I asked if he was a Short-timer... His response was, "When you put this much stuff on your shoulder, they tell you when you can go." You'll be hard pressed to find a Marine who served with him, directly or indirectly, who doesn't sing his praises. It doesn't surprise me in the least that he has no interest in running for President. I wish him well. And a quiet, comfortable retirement. Let him be...h e has more than served his time. -Ken STALEY ('68) ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. The "pundits" thought a third party run would be nearly impossible at this late date - probably couldn't get him on the ballot in every state. MATTIS has said he has no intention to run. I must say, I don't recall hogging question marks but I read it inna Sandstorm so it's goatta be true... I mean EVERYTHING I write is straight skinny so I assume the same is true for all others... in any event I thought that punctuation was a readily available and extra- plentiful natural resource... silly me... a year or so ago (which is easily 3 or 4) AOL offered "life-lock" with subscriptions and I signed up... whenever I check I'm still enrolled... at the time I signed up, I was not asked to provide any info... I got a call from them yesterday and missed the call... I called back and was asked all kinds of questions, the answers for most of which I did not have readily at hand... because I couldn't prove I was me they would not speak to me further... I went home and opened my subscription... I needed a user name and pass word... I had no clue... I finally was able to get the user name which was just a conglomeration of unrelated letters and numbers none of which I recognized... I was able to create a pass-word, but the whole thing was pretty silly... hopefully they will speak to me next time if I can remember "dpok>Sdk7363ifkdfslk" when I answer the call... hey but 'nuff 'bout me... today we gots two of my faaaaaaaaavorite '65ers...
