I haven't been to too many lately, but I hear she has. There is nothing left to do but tip the ol' propeller beanie and say "Happy Birthday!" to Ann ENGEL ('63) on the occasion of her 18th. I'm looking for specific kinds of stories from early Richland (let's say from the Manhattan Project through the 1950s. Since 1992, I've been a volunteer at the local agency called SARC and have been a part of training new advocates for the last 15 years or more (can't quite remember when I started that part). A couple of years ago, SARC changed and became the Support, Advocacy and Resource Center. The name change was to reflect the reality that SARC had many more programs for different kinds of victims needing support of various kinds. They have programs for kids who have been victimized (Kids Haven), for victims of crimes committed against adults (either as adults or as children), community awareness programs, training for individuals and institutions. And they work closely with the Domestic Violence Center in the Tri-Cities. The emphasis is broad but mostly "crimes against a person" as the lawyers might say. For example, when I was a prospective juror one time, the judge asked those in the jury pool to raise their hands if they had ever been a victim of a crime. He then asked each one of us who raised our hands whether it was a crime against our property or a crime against our person. The stories I'm looking for concern the latter. As part of the training I do at SARC, I try to provide a perspective on how crimes against a person are not a new phenomenon. I also seek to give an understanding of how those kind of crimes impact a person, particularly if the victim is a child. The new advocates will be providing services to the public in various ways including a crisis line and hospital calls (where the advocate meets the crime victim at the hospital) and they need to know what they are getting into. As the backbone of what I do in the training, I use my story because I was a target of four different adults who "committed crimes against my person" before I was 9. In conversations over the years with fellow Bombers, I've identified 14 different adults who were allegedly guilty of such crimes during the early 1950s. I would be grateful for any stories anybody might be willing to offer. I will keep complete confidentiality - only using numbers of perpetrators for the training purposes. In order to maintain that confidentiality, it would be best if you send me an email or call me. If you are local to Richland, we could even meet for coffee. If you're interested in what brought me to doing this kind of thing, I can send you a link to my story. -Tedd CADD ('66) ~ 509-947-4402 ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. Great for growing tomatoes and peppers and watermelon. Not so great for tromping around in the woods: snakes (3 poisonous species), ticks (42 bites so far this year), and poison ivy (not susceptable, fortunately). Now on to the cosmic joke: I'm a big fan of our local land trust -- The Land Trust of North Alabama. Been on the board for 20+ years and lead most our the land deals. We've preserved more than 7,000 acres, most of which are open to the public. We have 3 parks in Huntsville alone larger than Central Park (850 acres). This week, I got a call about a 1,000-acre tract an hour east of here, near the Alabama-Georgia border in the foothills of the Appalachians. It includes the remains of an old town and iron works dating back to the late 1800s. The name of the town is... Battelle. As in Col. John Gordon Battelle. Col. Battelle was in the Yankee army and won a battle nearby during The War of Northern Aggression (we still call it that). When the war ended, Battelle carpetbagged south and bought up 7,000 acres. He built the town and iron-smelting operation. It eventually ran out of gas (and money) when Birmingham delivered iron cheaper, faster, better. The Colonel sold his remaining land and moved to Ohio to make steel. His son Gordon died at 40 in 1923 (appendectomy complications at Dayton hospital), leaving $1.6 million to start the Battelle Memorial Institute. Fast forward to 1965: Battelle Northwest takes over running the Hanford site from GE. My dad was with GE and transferred to Battelle, along with a bazillion other dads and moms in Richland. Fast forward to this week: The Land Trust started working the Battelle Alabama project with a Georgia owner/developer, who is working on a big tax write off for giving up his coal-mining rights. The Land Trust would eventually get the land for free in a few years, with the idea of developing a Battelle historical park. Developer says he has talked to Battelle Foundation about funding the park project. But then, he's said a lot of stuff that will require substantial due diligence. If things work out, we'll do the deal this year. One other tidbit: Hugh Hefner built a mansion on the bluff overlooking the Battelle valley in Mentone, AL, right next door to our deal. Judging from the holes in the roof, he doesn't live there anymore. http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Dal/160805-Hefner_House.jpg -Mike DALEN ('72) ~ Huntsville, AL ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. Re: Cal Ripkin 12s World Series Title Game ~ 8/7/16 Herald "Kennewick American's run at the Cal Ripken 12s World Series ended Saturday with a 7-0 loss to Japan in the championship game in Aberdeen, MD. 'I'm pleased as punch,' Kennewick coach Bryan Knapik said via telephone. 'We had a great tournament. We are No. 1 in the nation. Japan was by far the best team we have ever played.' I received this one in Excelsior MN, where the forever young and always lovely Miss Nancy and I are 2042 miles into our summer road trip. Cruising with the Beach Boys by Dana Gioi So strange to hear that song again tonight Traveling on business in a rented car Miles from anywhere I've been before. And now a tune I haven't heard for years Probably not since it last left the charts Back in L.A. in 1969. I can't believe I know the words by heart And can't think of a girl to blame them on. Every lovesick summer has its song, And this one I pretended to despise, But if I was alone when it came on, I turned it up full-blast to sing along - A primal scream in croaky baritone, The notes all flat, the lyrics mostly slurred. No wonder I spent so much time alone Making the rounds in Dad's old Thunderbird. Some nights I drove down to the beach to park And walk along the railings of the pier. The water down below was cold and dark, The waves monotonous against the shore. The darkness and the mist, the midnight sea, The flickering lights reflected from the city - A perfect setting for a boy like me, The Cecil B. DeMille of my self-pity. I thought by now I'd left those nights behind, Lost like the girls that I could never get, Gone with the years, junked with the old T-Bird. But one old song, a stretch of empty road, Can open up a door and let them fall Tumbling like boxes from a dusty shelf, Tightening my throat for no reason at all, Bringing on tears shed only for myself. -jimbeaux -Jim HAMILTON ('63) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Pat DORISS Trimble ('65) Re: A Cute Nostalgic Web Site I was going through and clearing out some links I've received the past few years and came across this. Now for the most part I am a '50s rocker, but the beach boys are a major '60s weakness of mine... I will admit I stopped going to see their shows when they became the "Mike Love" show... I went to see the Wilson brothers and Mike was just something I hadda put up with... yes he maintains the sound at the sacrifice of the feeling... It's just me so go and have a ball... Dennis was my favorite and then Brian and Carl... damn what talent... I find it hard to sit through a current Brian concert, though if I close my eyes and go back I'm good... so much damage to the voice, the body and the mind... back in the late '80s or early '90s my partners, clients and I knew we had reached the top of the power structure when we vacated a section road through my buddy/Client's ranch... now the fact that I put the ranch together from smaller parcels to place the section road in the middle was no longer an impediment... we asked for it and we got it... back then I made two phone calls and the street in front of my Dad's house not only got the speed bumps he wanted but a whole new road... but as we left that day from the County Commissioners with the vacated Section road, we were playing the beach boys... a buncha little kids had come to power... I still use "don't worry Baby" as my Bombers ring tone and "God only knows" for my daughter, Sarah... the message of Jimbeaux's post was one we all thought was special to each of us... I recall one afternoon at the DI, a buncha '65ers were gabbing in a room and I learned for the first time (first hand) that I had not been alone all those years earlier... we all felt we were lower than whale poo poo in our teens... if we had been younger we mighta gone out and eaten worms as everybody hated us and nobody loved us... which is not to suggest that we are totally free of our personal demons at all times... we just "know" intellectually that most of them are just in our minds... most... I wanna wish the Class of '66 a wonderful reunion and I am so sorry I couldn't make it this year (I am sure they are all heart broken)... Well, it is time for me to think back to those days lying on my bed listening to love songs about today's Bomber-babe b-day girl... Someone who I always wanted to meet was Levi Fisher (Garfield '63). He was the star of Garfield's State Basketball Championship teams in '61 and '62, and 2nd place in '63. I played against Levi in HS and college, but never had spoken a word to him. Fortunately my sidekick, Jim HOUSE ('63) knew Levi from his days at UW and even drove Levi over to see a Bomber basketball game in '64, but Jim hadn't seen him in 50 years. Through a Senior basketball teammate, Jim Miller (Blanchet '63) we arranged to meet Levi for lunch in North Bend. Levi is a great guy and it was fun to talk about "back in the day". He told Jim and I that the reason Garfield didn't win a 3rd straight Championship was that Richland "wore them out" in the third game of the '63 tournament. Even though the Bombers lost to Garfield in that game, Jim and I took some satisfaction from Levi's statement. BTW Blanchet beat Garfield on the 4th day for the '63 title and our other lunch guest, Jim Miller was the high point man for the victors. My idea of good basketball was set in granite when you all were playing and I think every good team has to "run them to death" like Dawald had you do back in the day. Otherwise the game just doesn't do it for me. You all were so good technically, also... what fun to remember! Bomber basketball, back in the day, was soooo good! The other thing that sticks out in my mind was the Garfield cheerleaders and their way cool routines. They did everything to a beat and the fans just swaying and chanting in unison... something that we, from the other side of the mountains had never seen before. It was just so cool watching them at the UW gym. I remember thinking... I want to do that! But, you guys really deserved first place in my mind. Two hard fought games. Mr. Andre got into trouble for reading to the class near the end of the year (1962) a graphic description of what happened physiologically during crucifixion. It was apparently too graphic for some students, and some parents thought it an inappropriate use of class time. Maybe the school agreed, but in any event Mr. Andre didn't return the next year, and Latin was taught by the Spanish teacher, Mr. Mendoza, I think his name was. I mean who could fault one for havin' a b-day next to the other's... it's just a theory that I been workin' on for... oh maybe 10 years or so... guess I'd better think it through a little better... soooooooooooo HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Judy BOGGS ('64) on your special day, August 17, 2016... if another famblie birthday occurs tomorry, though... Since I seldom send anything I have to grab any opportunity that comes along. I'm one of those consecutive birthdays. I came home from school on my (approximately) fifteenth birthday (December 5) and my mom, who had been expecting for a while, asked, "How would you like to have a baby sister for a birthday present?" I was overjoyed. I already had two brothers and didn't see what another would add to the family, and I really wanted a baby sister. Little girls dressed up look so much cuter than little boys. See picture of my two kids, taken back when they were still cute. http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Dou/160819-CuteRodgerEmi.jpg Well, the event didn't happen until the next day (December 6, if you don't have a calendar handy). Also, she was not a baby sister. I had another brother. Must be genetic or something. Of the four brothers, I'm the only one who managed to have a daughter. We planned that ahead of time. Anyway, we decided to keep the new kid. At least, I can remember his birthday every year. My older brother Walker ('57) has the same birthday as my son Rodger - January 28, so theirs are easy to remember. My daughter Emiko's birthday is on Prince Kuhio's birthday, which of course everyone knows since it's a state holiday [in Hawaii]. The only birthday I have trouble with is younger brother Jim ('72), which I have finally put on my computer calendar which reminds me of events I just missed, this one August 3. I'm glad we decided to keep Marc ('77). We had four boys in a little over five years. My husband was an airline pilot so was gone a lot. My sister Barbara ('50) told me I should write a survival book about raising four boys. A typical experience was while in the Hawaiian airport, our youngest who loves noodles of any kind, wanted one more bowl of Saimin. While I was at the noodle stand he started loudly crying. (He was about five at the time.) He ran up to me sobbing, "I don't want to be Chinese!!" I told him to calm down. People were staring as he cried even louder. I firmly said "You are NOT Chinese!" He replied "Uh huh, Mike and Kirk said I was Chinese 'cuz every fourth person born is Chinese and I was born last, do I have to be Chinese?" I guess I should write a book starting with grocery shopping with two in the basket and two hanging on my pant legs (And lots of unwanted items in the basket,) to four teenagers. This has nothing to do with Richland memories, but I thought it might start your day with a chuckle. There are some days when that's needed, that's why I enjoy David RIVERS ('65) so much. Re: What a faaaaaaaaaaantastic Bomb-babe

Ok ok.. I know it seems as tho I have a "thing" for Bomber-
babes... one might even say I'm addicted... but I say Bomber-
babes Rule so why not! Now I will confess I did not meet
this babe until my 25 year Reunion... but man was it worth
it... there are few if any times I hit Richland that I do
not spend time with her... ya see it's like this... me n her
sweetie ('65-'67) go back to when he first moved to Richland
from Ideho I think... a pretend farm boy... at least he
pretended enough to get a Farmer's drivers license... he was
15 and so wuz I but I figgered he was in his early 20s...
Sgt Rock chin, great black DA with a Buddy Holly curl and a
5 o-clock shadow that would make Richard Nixon look like a
third grader... he did, does and always will know more about
cars than I ever will... and then my experience consisted of
sitting in the swings with my buds over at the park across
from my house pretending to be driving very cool cars to
Yakima or some other far away place... I hadda '46/'47 Ford
4 door with a froze engine and he had a '46 Chevy with no
reverse... now I was no dummy... I knew if I wanted to
change directions I could just turn around... what could he
do? Well in a couple a days he was cruzin' in the Ford. 'Nuff
said... so ever since, he and I have been bestest buds... and
when your bestest bud marries a great Bomber-babe, she also
becomes yer bestest bud... along with the entire famblie...
there's not much inna world we haven't done together and it
would take a lot more space than I got here to tell alla
stories... From first in line at Disneyland to fighting our
way outa the big Surplus store on Holywood Blvd... well OK
she wasn't involved in that particular incident... to say she
is a trooper is an understatement... she's just the best and
I love her to pieces... HAPPY BIRTHDAY Kathie MOORE ('69)!!!

Greetings Maren,

I thought some of the Alumni Sandstorm readers may be
interested in this article. Basically, GESA Credit Union now
offers GESA Visa Debit Cards that help to raise money for
local high school sports. This article advises that both
Hanford High School & Richland High School themed debit cards
are available for issuance and are free to members. Since
I'm already a member of GESA & have an active debit card, I
called and had the new Richland High School debit card issued
to me. GESA stated I should receive the new card in the next
7 to 10 days.

As a side note, how many readers remember or know what the
initials GESA and HAPO stand for? HAPO is another local
credit union. Both credit unions started in Richland for
employees of Hanford contractors.

I think the way it worked was non-exempt employees got paid either weekly or bi-weekly and exempt employees got paid monthly so they at the end of the month when their money ran low they could borrow from the non-exempt employees. GESA stands for General Electric S........ A........ and I think HAPO was one of the Marx brothers, you know, the one that didn't have to remember any lines to play his part.. It's membership was federal government employees. In my earliest memories it was housed in the 703 Building, then later moved to the Federal Building. For years it was a one-woman operation, with Dottie Owens as chief cook and bottle washer. Well, I'm sure that wasn't her title, but she did it all. Until I was in high school, HFCU's hours still coincided with the hours of my nursery school. I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it? Later, as you know, Dottie (my mom) was joined at HFCU by Alene Bush (your mom) and the staff doubled overnight! But I get ahead of myself. One of my early memories, in the mid-sixties, was going to the HFCU office outside of working hours at the end of the quarter and using paper and pencil to compute interest. I must have been a pre-teen, maybe 9 or 10, but pretty good at math, so would compute the interest independently of Mom and then we would compare our results. If we matched, and amazingly we did match over 90% of the time in those pre-calculator days, she'd note it in the pass book. If it didn't, we'd both try again until we got consensus. Hmmm, I can't remember whether I ever got paid? Oh well, I got fed and that was good enough for me. When your mom came on board, I retired. I used to smile whenever your mom would post in my pass book, as she initialed ABush and I thought that was really cool! Somewhere in the mid-seventies HFCU merged with GESA and Mom was offered a job but declined and took early retirement. I have many artist friends who are famous in the striping world but few have gone beyond... Kenny Michroney is known for many, many animated movies such as Lion King, Cars and on and on... Jeffy Derandis has "Dora the Explorer" (and co-credits with Kenny on some of Kenny's movies)... Big Daddy Ed Roth captured many of our imaginations with his Fat Fink and monster cartoons... Robert Williams is known as the God- father of low brow art... .but I think that pretty much sums up my artist buds who have really hit the big time... our guy perhaps leans more to the higher "cultural" art, but then what is culture... all in the eyes of the beholder... if you have never checked out this guy's web site... you should do so... I seriously doubt that this Bomber Babe is of that age. I'd knock 30 - 40 years off and think it would be closer to her age. It is certain that the "Tooter" ('65) will weigh in with some comment on two on this person. Why not; he certainly had/has a "crush" on her from sometime back. Cameron drove his truck loaded with all of the stuff he needs for his first year of college. We rode with Allen and Christy in their truck and we all took turns riding with Cameron. We took a detour to visit the Cody Museum in Cody, WY and also visited the Little Bighorn Battlefield. Both were well worth the detour and Cameron (a history major) was really impressed. We chose to not drive into Yellowstone because the smoke from the fires was so thick that we couldn't see very far. We arrived in Jamestown Wednesday (9/24) night. Thursday (9/25) Lance, Allen, and Cameron played golf at the county club course that Cameron's baseball coach had recommended. Christy and I checked out the town. Jamestown reminds me of Ellensburg - a small, friendly college town, but it has several large chain stores. Cameron had baseball practice that afternoon so we met the coaching staff and then went to visit the World's Largest Buffalo at a cute little old time village in the town. The real bison were way on the other side of the park and hard to see. That night Cameron went to a nearby town to watch the football game. The Jimmies lost, but he had a good time. Friday (9/26) was move-in day and we joined all the students in that mad event. We ate in the dining hall and met several students that Cameron knew, then attended the orientation program with Cameron. He was scheduled for the rest of the night so we headed back to the hotel for some much needed rest. Cameron spent his first night in his dorm. He rooms with another baseball player. On Saturday (9/27) Cameron came to the hotel for his last breakfast with us for quite some time. He had stuff going on all day, so we said goodbye amid laughter and a few tears then he headed back to the college and we started our journey back home. We made it to Butte, MT that night and got up the next morning and made it back here Sunday (9/28) in mid- afternoon. It's hard to believe how fast the past nineteen years have flown. Cameron will celebrate his first birthday without any family on 9/4. I think it will be harder for me and Christy than it will be for him. I enjoyed strolling through a kinda trading post which had all kinds a news paper clippings on a bulletin board on the good works Moldy does... we had potato sack races and egg tosses for the kids and some very good music for the older bunch... when the sun started to go down we said the pledge of allegiance... when asked the kids said they don't say it in school any more... a guy asked me if I came alla way from Vegas just for the little show... The first was in '93. All held in August after some spring flooding in the Red River. ?The mosquitoes were unbelievable. "Skin So Soft"? Nada. Dryer non-wrinkle tissues? Nada. Combinations of several spray cans? Nada. Nothing but pure Deet would hold them off. You had to be careful as it would eat the plastic in your watch crystal. Some pyros broke out really bad from too much DEET. To prove our point to Fair grounds manager we walked out in to the grass with a bare arm out. 15 seconds 10 landing on the arm and getting position to stick the probe in. So they got serious with the spraying and... We have had several more conventions there as they like us and put up with the week-long, house-shaking, window-rattling noise for a week. After we leave the merchants start counting the several hundred thou $ the attendees leave behind and then they invite us back. I am at Anchorage House as Jackie and I had 2 large displays to present. First, her display last Saturday for City of Houston Founders Day. Largest crowd ever and most said it was best ever. Immediately we started reconfiguring the gun trailers for my display Saturday night the 3rd at the Alaska State Fair. The guns (mortars) are ready to load so we are a day ahead of schedule. Despite the new manager cutting all entertainment budgets, they will see a great display. Totally choreographed, multi-level, multi-dimensional precisely fired usng the most advanced remote firing system on the market. I fly south Sunday night, re-pack my suitcase and get back to SeaTac at 6qm to fly to Detroit, MI. Then drive to Grand Rapids, MI for the National Fireworks Assoc. annual convention. I will also meet with several new clients for my semi retirement occupation. Pyro Consultants, LLC. I am putting my over 50 years experience to work. Training in all phases of pyrotechnics, Forensic investigation and re-creation of pyro incidents and accidents, and evidence preparation for litigation. While I am in Grand Rapids I will visit one of my 3 remaining cousins on the Mattingly side. Elaine is 15 years older than me. She moved into a partial care center a few months ago and is anxious to see me again. Jackie and I visited her and her still alive husband, 4 years ago. She gave us numerous pictures. One worth mentioning. For years I have had a vision in my mind of crouching on a cracked sidewalk and feeding nuts a squirrel at about 3 years old. Virtually all of my relatives said I was dreaming or something. Neener neener... Last time I was there my cousin Elaine gave me a picture of me feeding a squirrel on a cracked sidewalk in front of her childhood home. The date on the picture puts me at 2 1/2 years old. http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Mat/Me-Squirl-5yrs.jpg I was sorry to miss Club 40 again, but maybe we will get more favorable dates next year. There was so much laughter, love, and hugs in that room. Actually, we had three events. Our lunch get together was a three hour event and we all really enjoyed it. On Saturday morning the Spudnut Shop tailgate party was a big hit too. But, of course, the party was the cherry on top. The meet and greet line was a way for us to touch base with everyone. It started with a handshake and a happy birthday, but it soon turned in to hugs and visits. For those who stayed we danced to Rocko Bondo and tunes from the '60s. I have a story I'd like to share before I close out my entries to Sandstorm about the party. I gave a two minute talk about growing up and the changes we have seen in ourselves and in our world. Afterward, in the meet and greet line, our bartender came up and told me how much he enjoyed the talk. He said, "You guys are awesome! You guys pushed the boundaries, you demanded change. (He was referring to the woman's movement and civil rights.) The personal changes you experienced are the same ones my generation encountered growing up. I respect you guys so much. You changed the world." As he was leaving he turned, did a fist pump and said, "You guys rock!" We rock, Bombers!!
