My wife, Mary, saw her at Costco several days ago. Norma said
she had given up golf.
Norma and I used to start the dancing at our class reunions to
"In The Mood". We dated a couple times during high school and
she has been a good friend through the years. She will be
missed by her family and her many friends.

I am having a ball driving Uber a couple of days a week and
along with my Rotary Club service I am able to remain sane. I
had a customer today who is inspiring and is the Sports
Coordinator for the Seattle YMCA. Errol Knight played his
College Basketball at Gonzaga before playing professionally in
Israel.
HERE IS THE ASK: Coach Knight also coaches the Rotary Eybl
(Nike) team and when he found out I was a Bomber, requested

Today we gots one a them unsunged heroes in Bomberdom... a guy
who carries the water every time asked and often sua sponte...
several years ago he took it upon himself to gather the names
of all Bomber Veterans to the extent people from whom his
call went out (and he did put out the call several times)
responded... those names appear on several beautiful panels he
has displayed on several occasions... now that's a Bomber...
not to mention the photos and music he has supplied for many

You might have a better one Maren but here is a score if you
don't already have it... Richland beat two time defending
state champions Federal Way today (3/2) 61 to 57 in a
thriller.
Game tied then Bombers scored with 5.7 seconds left to make
it 59 to 57. Federal Way then got called for a technical for
having 6 men on the floor after their time out. Bombers made
both technical foul shots to make it 61 to 57 then they got he
ball and ran out the clock.
They play number 1 seed, Union Titans today (3/3) at 3:45.

This brings back a memory from the '58 season. After we beat
Davis, the Davis coach stated that he didn't sleep for three
nights. Later that season, we played them again at Col-Hi.
When it became obvious that we were going to win again, the

Well, Pitts ('63) really got me to thinking about "love
songs"... my first impression was that love songs... favorite
love songs tend to reflect where we as people (listeners) are
at a moment in time... for me... I was most susceptible at a
younger age or at a time when I might be in the process of my
next bout of infatuation... before I could drive, I spent a
great deal of time lying on my bed listening to Lynn BRYSON
('57-RIP) and the Real Don Steele... love songs were my
passion... I mean in a song you can either win or lose and in
the mind of a young teen... rejection and acceptance each
carries its own set of emotions which are extreme to say the
least... each bringing some form of satisfaction to the teen
aged psyche... In those days tear jerkers were big on my
list... as were meeting Miss right... Jimmy Beaumont and the
Skyliners filled the bill on both counts... The Clovers did
the same... Buddy Holly had some great love songs, True Love's
Ways being way up there... the Belmont's Where or When was and
always will be a big fav of mine... Once we could drive, my
tastes changed a tad... I was no longer "dreaming" but I was
in the big league actually testing the waters... wooo hoo
the real thing... ah... then the first huge "love"... Nancy
MIDDLETON ('67) and I craved the Righteous Brothers and had
every album few of their songs did not qualify as "love
songs"... well maybe Latin Lupe Lu wouldn't... Jay and the
Americans, the Temps, and another of Nancy's favs Little
Anthony and the Imperials... Del Shannon, Roy Orbison, the
Everlys... and Elvis all produced magnificent love songs...
so... anyway, I took it upon myself to go public with Pitts'
challenge on face book... for the most part, people tended to
go after adding to Jim's list... finally I started posting
songs FROM AFTER 70 that qualified for me... again they were
my picks and if I had more time or had taken more time the
list would change I am sure so, in no particular order here

team has made this season is an illustrious one.
But that doesn't make this loss hurt any less
for the Bombers.
Richland will play No. 2 Gonzaga Prep in the
third/fifth-place game at 11:15 am March 4.. The
Bullpups beat the Bombers in triple overtime in

TOMORROW is the Official RE-start in Fairbanks
There are three looking to match Rick Swenson's five (5) wins:
Martin Buser, Jeff King, and Dallas Seavey.
And Dallas' dad, Mitch Seavey could claim his third win.
And maybe it's time for a woman to win: We have Aliy Zirkle,
Jessie Royer, and DeeDee Jonrowe all trying for their first
win.
More than one Norwegian looking for their first win including
Joar (pronounced your) Leifseth-Ulsom.
It'll keep me busy for then next couple of weeks anyway.

Classic with the Bombers posing with some

A lot of factors contributed to the Bombers (21-7) losing to
the Bullpups (25-2) for the third time this season.
The final score was 64-57 in favor of G-Prep.

birthdays. We're talkin' two Bomber Babes and a Bomber. I'll

Now, on to the important ones. People I went to school with.
The graduation program shows our names, not in the same
column, but they are there just the same. The Bomber Babes are
sisters who look remarkably alike and have fooled people for
years as to which was whom. The Bomber was here and there
doing many things during his tenure.

TODAY is the Official RE-start in Fairbanks
If you've paid attention in past years, you know that we
won't know which team is "really" ahead till AFTER everybody
completes their mandatory 24 hour rest.
Last year, there was a drunk on a snow machine who charged
two Iditarod teams just outside of the Nualto check point.
Aliy Zirkle and Jeff King. One of Jeff's dogs died as a result
and I think he pulled two others from the race right then.
Both Aliy and Jeff were maybe running 1st and 2nd at the time
-- certainly in the top 5 anyway -- I remember watching Aliy
when she arrived at the check point... she was shaking scared.
This was before they knew it was a drunk. Aliy finished 3rd
and Jeff finished 9th. I'm SURE they will both be glad to be
past the Nualto check point this year. Nualto is 629 miles
from Anchorage and 346 miles from Nome.
4 time winner Jeff King has had some rough years lately. In
2014 Jeff left White Mountain (77 miles from the finish) in
1st place and a storm pinned him and his entire team down and
huddling in the snow. Dallas Seavey left White Mountain in 3rd
place and -- unbeknownst to him -- passed Jeff. He said later
that every time he turned around he saw a head lamp and
thought it was his dad, Mitch, behind him... he thought he was
battling for 3rd place. He didn't know till after he crossed
the finish line that he had won... Aliy came in 2nd and was
asking "Where's Jeff?"... Mitch Seavey was third. and Jeff
scratched after he and his team were rescued.
MANY of these teams are racing this year and any one of them
would win in 2017.

Richland... I'm sure most kids out there remember the wild
Richland winds of yore... yes I know... it still blows but

Year."
Former Hanford swimmer Lisa Tixier was named
NAIA Swimmer of the Year on Saturday at the
conclusion of the NAIA Swimming & Diving
Championship in Columbus, GA.
Tixier, a junior at Biola University, won
national titles in the 50 free and the 100
butterfly, where she set an NAIA record. Tixier
also had a runner-up finish in the 100 free. She
finished second in the 100 free Saturday with a
time of 50.42 seconds, breaking her own school
record of 50.91 set March 4, 2015.
Julie Woody of Savannah College of Art and
Design won the 100 free in a time of 49.24 -
breaking the NAIA record of 49.33 set in 2012.
Biola finished third in the 400 free relay with
Tixier swimming the anchor leg. The Eagles
posted a time of 3:31.81. Tixier had the fastest
split of 50.08.
Biola finished third in the team race with 343
points, behind winner Olivet Nazarene University
(639) and second-place Savannah College of Art
and Design (632.5)."

Maren . . . I enjoy your fascination with the races in Alaska.
I used to represent all the people who worked on the barges
from the Tri-Cities to Prudhoe Bay in Alaska. I spent a lot
of time in Nome with a company called Arctic Lighterage. The
Iditarod race is a real celebration for them... almost like
Mardi Gras is for New Orleans. To be in Nome when the race
was over was one hell of a celebration. They used to have
bathtub races where guys would get in bathtubs and race down
the one street in Nome in 40 below weather in their bathing
suits. To say they were drunk would be putting it light. They
also had an 18 hole golf tournament carved out of the ice in
Norton Sound. The holes were big and long and they played with
black balls. Every night there was a celebration at the Board
of Trades or the Polar Inn. They had a big end of the Iditarod
race made out of burlwood sitting at the end of main street.
The company had a barge slip at the end of town where I held
my meetings with the workers and I loved spending some time
with them BS-ing about all the festivities that accompanied
the race. Perhaps those who wonder why you like the race so
much don't understand what's it all about. In the early 1900s
there was a diphtheria epidemic in Nome and they needed the
serum to save the town from a lot of deaths. There was no
railroad to Nome nor any planes that flew there. The nearest
railroad was a town called Nenana on the Tanana river. They
brought the serum into Nenana and mushed it over to Nome in a
desperate race to save lives. It was a tremendous distance
through hostile territory and quite a feat for both the men
and the dogs that undertook the challenge. They made quite a
hero out of one of the lead dogs, I think his name was Baldo.
To make a long story short they got there in time and saved
all the sick people.
[Which is why the Iditarod is a commemorative race. -Maren]
I also loved to watch all the dredging for gold in Norton
Sound. It was a very interesting place to be. I don't know
that I'm the only one who enjoys your telling of the race, but
I doubt it. It's very interesting to watch their progress. If
some don't like it, to hell with them. Keep it up.

all-tournament first team, and senior forward
Tyler KURTZ ('17) was a second-teamer.
SORN averaged 12.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 7.5
blocks over four games. He shot 61 precent (20
for 33) from the floor, and his 30 blocks were a
tournament record.
KURTZ averaged 11.5 points and 4.3 rebounds, and

I enjoy the Iditarod data each year. I learned a lot from Jim
WATTS' ('54) summary of the background of how the race got
started and developed over the years. Very informative and
appreciated. Maren, really appreciate your interest and update
each year.
I remember back in 1955, my senior year at Central Washington,
We went up to Alaska and played both college teams and three
service teams, beat both local college teams and lost to all
three service teams (like Eielsen AFB) who were loaded with
ex-college players in the service. Anyway, we got to ride a
dog sled, such a great experience. I shall never forget it.
Then as a pilot on KC-135s, we flew a lot out of Fairbanks

Dallas Seavey is resting THREE or FOUR dogs at a time...
Dallas' check point drill: He arrived in Nenana having done
only 9.86mph with 16 dogs. On closer observation he actually
was only had 12 in harness and 4 were riding comfortably in
his specially designed boxes of his carbon fiber reinforced
sled bag. He quickly launched into a 15 minute drill: checked
dogs, looked at booties, released two dogs from the tow line
who obediently stood calmly by the team, moved like a whirling
dervish to the sled, opened the kennel door from which two
resting huskies emerged. After the exchange, two fresh dogs
were hooked into the team with one assuming the single lead.
Then again, two more dogs were unclipped, two came out from
another kennel door, and Dallas was ready to leave with
thirteen dog team with three dogs now resting comfortably.
Time to retrieve fresh bags of frozen snacks for the dogs and
installed them and some fresh booties and harness into well
designed compartments that fit to the size of his gear bags.
12 minutes! -- most mushers average 15 minutes to reorganize
their loads at checkpoints.
Everyone says the trail is better than they expected because
the trail breakers have made the snow hard packed... faster
for everyone.

Disney made a cartoon-movie about that dog and the race to
bring the medicine to the town [Nome}... I watched it with my
grandkids... was a good movie and, even though it was done as
a cartoon, you got the sense of the urgency in bringing that
serum to the town and the importance of having to use sled

I did it... yup... I hear much about people washing their
phones or dropping them in water... I actually dropped mine
into a big tub of antifreeze and it stayed alive but today
while trying to get some jeans in the washer quickly I took
everything out except my wallet... what a mess... I am looking

Joyce J. Larson, 82 of Pasco, passed away
peacefully on March 1st, 2017. She was born on
March 2, 1934 in Underwood, ND. She moved to
Richland in 1964 where she taught English at
Richland High School for 38 years and also
taught piano for many years at Music Unlimited
as well as private lessons.
In lieu of flowers, because of her unconditional
love of animals please donate to any local
humane society. A private memorial will be held
by the family.

Re: love songs
I enjoyed the lists given. While I was writing a teen-age
romance novel (The Trouble with Kisses) I would listen to
Sirius channels 5 and 6 ('50s and '60s music). I used several
of the song titles in my story. The novel needs a major re-
write, so until I get the energy to do that I'm revising the
first few chapters into a short novel for pre-teens titled I'm
Available. I would like to use lyrics to the song by that
title but don't want to pay for the rights, so I wrote my own
lyrics (or rather the first two lines of lyrics) that the girl
sings while she's looking for a boyfriend.
After temperatures in the 60s yesterday, it's warming up to
the 80s today. The pool temperature has already gone from 70°
to 74°. Another 10° and we can go swimming again. Last year we
started swimming the end of February, and the last day I went
swimming was November 1. In the peak temperatures the middle
of summer I run the solar heater at night to keep the pool
cool!! above 89° and it's more like taking a bath.
Maren, I enjoy reading about the Iditarod, even though I've
never been athletic myself. I enjoyed football and basketball
games in high school because they were cheap dates. I only
dated girls with ASB cards. I liked basketball better because
(a) it had more action, and (b) it was indoors where it was
warm.
I use Microsoft Mail for my email program. Did you know if you
type an a in parentheses you get a little angel icon, and a b
in parentheses produces an beer mug icon?

How many times do we (lots for me) do something and just as we
do it, a little voice says "bad idea"... I can't think of a
single time that turned out well... unfortunately I normally
ignore the voice... usually it's just a broken this or that,
spilled coffee or water or something that can be fixed... but
if I had a nickel for every time I put something in the wrong
place... just for a second... I'd have a pocket fulla nickels
I'll tell ya... Of course most often for the really big stuff
my little voice is asleep... my question is usually "how could
I be so stupid"... I think I'll leave that one alone... so
today we gotta Bomber-babe who I shoulda asked out in school
and a Bomber from my Adopted class... I've often wondered how

March 25, 1964, just a little over two months before I
graduated I watched an episode of "The Beverly Hillbillies"
titled "Granny Versus the Weather Bureau." I never saw that
episode again in reruns, but always wanted to. It was recently
posted on YouTube.

In this episode Granny insists it is going to rain even though
the TV weather girl says it will be clear. Granny's main
indicator is a little beetle she keeps in a matchbox. Banker
Drysdale takes Jed to see the man from the weather bureau
played by character actor John McGiver, who seems to good at
stealing the scene in about everything he is in. Everyone,
including the weather bureau man agrees he is a good
weatherman, but not as great as his father was. His father was
a great weatherman. The government man comes to the Clampett
house with a movie projector and sets up a movie screen (See
what primitive times we lived in back then) and showed a movie
about the modern weather predicting methods including the new
satellites. Granny in still unconvinced, saying it is going to
rain in one minute, then lightening strikes, thunder roars,
and Miss Jane runs out to put the top up on her convertible.
It ends with the weather man back at his office with Granny's
matchbox and beetle. He stands up and walks over to the
portrait of his father, then notices in his father's hand is a
little matchbox and says, "Dad, you should have told me you
were a beetle man."
Now why have I remembered that episode all these years? Well,
could be that three of four years earlier we lived on an
orchard in Milton-Freewater until moving to Richland in
1961. One night my dad thought he heard a rooster crowing. I
remember him actually getting out of bed and going to the
chicken house to make sure. Yes, the rooster was on the roost
crowing. He insisted the weatherman, who had said it was not
going to rain was wrong and the rooster crowing was right--it
was going to rain! I thought my old man (20 or so years
younger than I am now) was nuts. Thinking some stupid rooster
crowing after dark was a better predictor than meteorological
science. Guess who was right!!!

Remember that BFF you had 10, 30. 50 years ago? When was the
last time you spoke? Grageashun night? Maybe they were one of
those kids who only lived in Richland for a short time, but
you were totally close... then they moved... How many of those
friends have I had? When we were young... we were way too busy
to be distracted... then we started thinking about them but
how were you going to find them? I personally have looked and
found many of those kids when I learned that their Reunion
Committees have lost track... lotsa kids losta classes... hell
no... "it wasn't my job", but then I am a firm believer that
all Bombers are friends regardless of class... does that mean
I've been good at keeping track? Hell no... I do the same
thing each of you does... ."boy, tomorrow..." Back when I
was sending Christmas card... in fact the last year I did, I
had been wondering about my Best Friend at Spalding... I took
a flyer and sent him a card... he responded with a short
note... of course I didn't follow up till I learned he was
ill... but since then I am in touch with him on at least a
weekly basis... Jimbeaux ('63) used to say "but you know
everybody"... not true, but through the Internet I have become
"friends" with so many kids that I didn't "know" when I was
growing up. In fact, I spent time in many of their homes when
a couple of years amounted to decades in social circles...
many of them didn't even notice me underfoot... but they were
legends... at least to me... I know... I can be preachy... a
total pain in the ass as a matter of fact... hey... don't
wait... call that guy or girl... make contact... I think you
will be happy you did.

He was larger than life during and after RHS days. Two of my
kids were friends, and we are devastated to lose him at 48.
No service until some future time, but many alums would like
to know about his passing. My favorite of his many roles on

CBC summer musical "Little Shop of Horrors" in the late '80s
or early '90s. The obit is extensive and covers high school,
college, law school, travel, and many jobs and other
activities in the TC and elsewhere.

CONGRATS on being "smoke-free" for 18 years! I quit over 40
years ago... they were going to raise from 35 cents a pack
to 50 cents a pack and I decided I could do something better
with that 50 cents, so quit, "cold turkey". another incentive
was my two girls (who were little, at that time) they hated
the smell and were always hiding my cigarettes, so quitting
was a bit easier.
I still like the smell of cigarettes and a good pipe tobacco
(can't stand the smell of cigars... ugh!) and there are times
I would still like a cigarette, especially when I'm in a
bar or when I'm in a casino and the smell of cigarettes is
wafting throughout the place, but, like you, I know IF I
take one, I'll want more... another deterrent to ever taking
another cigarette is being "cancer-free" for almost seven
years and the type of cancer I had was/is caused by smoking
(even though I had quit, I lived with a smoker and most all
of my friends smoked, so was around the smoke all the time...
"second-hand" smoke is almost as deadly as the "real thing",
although, I NEVER believed that, till I was diagnosed with
cancer! So just one more reason why I will NEVER take
"another drag". again, CONGRATS on being "smoke-free" for 18
years.

I probably have you ALL beat with the number that I smoked
(burned up in the ashtray)... 4+ packs a day. We quit cold
turkey in '78. I can't stand the smell now, not even on
clothes... a good pipe is another matter, cigars, yuk! I
couldn't tolerate them even when I still smoked. My husband
loved them, but never smoked one around me, unless we were
outside and he would get 'down wind' for me. Oh, boy, I sure
miss him!

First things first--
I just checked with Vernon VAN DUSEN ('52) and he said it's
okay to share this information: last week, Van broke his leg
just below the hip. He is at Kadlec. Terry De VINE ('52) has
been to see him every day.
On another note: does anyone happen to know April the
Giraffe's DUE DATE??? Seems to me it would make sense to know
when she's due before we start worrying about the fact that
she is STILL pregnant! [She was SUPPOSED to have that baby
giraffe in late February!! -Maren]
On still another note: I quit smoking for 40 years. When I
learned that my daughter (Sandra Hubbard Spivey NAB) had
stage 4 colon cancer, July 27, 2007, I started smoking again.
It was a crutch, of course, but it worked for me. By my own
rule, I never smoked more than 5 cigarettes a day. Many days
it was less than 5. Sometimes I wouldn't smoke for weeks. I'm
still smoking once in a while. Sometimes I don't touch a
cigarette for months at a time, but I still have part of a
pack in a plastic baggy in the freezer. It's been in there
since last September 3rd when I came back from Alaska. Truth
be told, it is a little bit lighter now, but I have no desire
to take a drag again. At least not for now.
Does anyone else think we are getting more rain than usual?

I spent most of the 13th in the hot sun... yes the HOT sun...
over 80 easily... now it was my first day in shorts and I
shoulda realized I needed to take it easy but nooo00ooooo...
I felt the flicker in my eyes and thought how it had been a
very long time since I'd had a migraine... since over the
last few years I've only had flickering lights and nothing
else I kept on doing what I was doing... lights went away and
I eventually went into the house... at some point I felt
really funny like a migraine, but... I went to turn on the TV
with the remote and couldn't figure out how to work it (2
buttons max)... I knew I had to do Carol SLEDGE's ('63) b-day
but couldn't really figure out what to do... I finally
realized I'd best dive in to bed as I was totally lost... I
knew what was happening but couldn't do a darn thing about
it... now I know it's not as good as being kidnapped by
Pirates but it was the worst I've had since I got home from
Vietnam (when they started)... I'll do gooder next year...
today my daughter and I met the delinquents at a tiny Casino
in Henderson to try out for Tuesday lunches... Oh my
goodness... the food was fantastic... most of us had prime
rib (not some crappy prime rib... the kind you get with a
nice dinner)... Sarah and I then went to Winco and Costco for
Daughter and dad fun... when I got home I checked the mail
then unloaded the trunk... reached for my phone and... uh
oh... called every place I had been with the never used house
phone (yay it worked)... no luck... after searching the car
top to bottom decided to walk to the mailbox... sure enough a
little black dot could be seen in the road... wheeeeeeeeeeew
I was sure I was finally gonna be over to Verison tomorrow
for a smart phone... not yet! So that was more than anyone
needed to know... I'll get to HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Roy BALLARD

t was announced this morning, on KPAM radio... here in
Portland, Oregon, that Mitch Seavey had won the Iditarod sled
dog race by reaching Nome first. The announcer stated that
Mitch was the oldest winner to win this race (57}. My
right fist went up into the air as I said "hooray for us
seniors!!!" I may stand corrected but I believe I read,
somewhere, that 71 began this race from Anchorage to Nome. All
at younger ages-- Gooooooooo seniors!!
[Mitch was also the oldest when he won a few
years ago... and son, Dallas, was the youngest
to ever win the Iditarod. Yes, they started with
about that many... and a few are older... both
Linwood Fiedler and DeeDee Jonrowe are 63. I
think -- if memory serves -- the oldest to ever
FINISH (not. win) was 84... The Iditarod has no
age barriors. -Maren]

top-tier MCC foes, giving Kamiakin one of its
tightest conference games (72-64 on Jan. 14),
and falling to Chiawana 59-55 and 55-49 in the
regular season, and 57-54 in overtime in a

averaged 12.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.9
assists per game.

combo player was huge on both ends of the floor

Re: Cold weather
For those of you encountering cold weather, I've been thinking
warm thoughts for you. Yesterday I went swimming in our pool
for the first time this season. 86°.
Re: Nicotine
I smoked my first cigarette my sophomore year at Whitman
College (Walla Walla). Whitman only had a men's dorm for
freshman. After that males either joined a fraternity or got
an apartment. I and another frat reject rented a one-bedroom
apartment just off campus. He got the bedroom, I got the
living room. He dared me to smoke a cigarette, so I did.
However, I finally quit - cold turkey - about 30 seconds
later. Getting the taste out of my mouth took six hours. Years
later I worked in an office where we had staff meetings every
two weeks on Friday afternoons - about 30 people, half of whom
smoked, in an enclosed conference room. I'd go home with a
headache. Monday morning I'd come to work with the same
headache. I finally figured out I only got the headaches every
other Friday, which had to have something to do with the staff
meetings. I went to the doctor, who ordered allergy tests, and
discovered I was allergic to nicotine. The doctor gave me two
pills to take - one before the meeting, the other for times
the first pill didn't work. I have no urge to smoke.
Re: Daylight Saving Time
Daylight Saving Time is nothing but a headache. We don't
observe it here in Arizona - it upsets the chickens, or
something. Unfortunately, I have a talking watch that updates
the time at midnight every night with the Bureau of Standards
WWV station. It automatically updates to Daylight Saving Time
as well, so I have to set the time zone to Pacific DST in
order to have Arizona time. When my wife and I went to Hawaii
for our 50th wedding anniversary last June I had to subtract 3
hours from whatever my watch said, as it only had options for
the four mainland time zones. It's a neat watch for a retired
person. Without a regular routine like going to work I lose
track of the day and date, but my watch has a button that
tells me what it is.

Re: Smoking
I have read all the items about smoking and how hard it is to
quit. I was an early imbiber of the devil weed. By the time I
was fourteen I was firmly hooked. When I got out of school,
my first job was as a cigarette salesman for the Ligget Meyer
Tobacco Company. I worked at that until my non smoking wife
(Sharon TEMPLEMAN Watts ('55) brow beat me into quitting. She
was less effective in convincing me to quit. I kept smoking and
it followed me through my final career as a Union President. I
was the chief spokesman for the Hanford Negotiations the year
we put the sight wide pension plan. Because I did non-stop
talking for 10 months I developed a sore throat. Just before
signing the contract I went to see two throat doctors to get
relief for my throat. Both said I had cancer of the larynx. I
didn't tell my wife but when I went home one of the doctors had
called my wife and told her to get me to the hospital to have
my larynx removed or he wouldn't be responsible. Needless
to say I immediately threw away my cigarettes. I called my
attorney and told him I couldn't go with him to sign the
contracts with DOE. He told me that the doctors who had
diagnosed me had the most mal-practice suits against them in
Southeastern Washington. He told me that one of his law
partners had the same experience and it ended up that there was
nothing wrong with him. He told me to wait till he called me
back. He called back shortly and said he had made an appoint
with some specialist in Spokane at 10 in the morning. I left
early in the morning and though I was suffering from nicotine
hangover we made the appointment with the specialist on time. I
told him my experience with the doctors in the Tri-Cities and
then he put me in the chair and started to examine me. "Hmm,
yeah you have a beaut."
"I've got it huh?"
"You've got a beautiful 'Singer's node'. What do you do for a
living?"
I told him and asked him, "What the hell is a singer's node?"
"It's a callus on the vocal cords. It's a common ailment with
singers."
"I had two doctors tell me it was a cancer. If you can cure
this singers node, I'll be grateful, however I'd like another
opinion."
"Sure enough." He stuck his head out the door and said, "Hey
Bob, if you've got a minute I need you down here on a second
opinion for a Tri-City cancer patient."
The other doctor came in and examined me and said, "Boy that's
a beautiful singers node."
"Well, is there anything you can do for it?"
"I'll give you some spray for your throat and then I'll give
you the prescription. He sprayed my throat which relieved the
soreness. "And now for the prescription: Shut your mouth for
thirty days."
"That will be hard for me to do."
They turned to my wife and said, "Mrs. Watts, do you have any
duct tape. If you do, use it."
The first thing I did when I left the doctor's office I headed
for a cigarette machine much to my wife's chagrin. We had a
very quiet ride home. I thought about things and although I had
tried to quit many times, always backsliding in the process, I
decided to try it one more time. I had picked up an advisory
sheet once and I hauled it out and read it. It advised you to
pick a time and place where there would be as little temptation
as possible, mainly away from bars. Then surround yourself
with munchys and finally call your whole family in and brag to
them how much will power you had and then make a demonstrative
toss of your cigarettes away. I waited for a Saturday and did
just that. They all congratulated me and left. After about
three hours, I that I decided to try to and just taper off so
I crawled down through the wild rose bushes and retrieved my
cigarettes. I decided to put them in the well house buried
under a bag of fertilizer. I failed miserably in tapering off.
Pretty soon I was spending more time in the well house than I
was in the house. In fact, I was trying to figure out how to
put a T.V. into the well house. Well, one day I went out to the
well house and stuck my hand under the fertilizer bag and a rat
trap went off on my hand. After shaking the rat trap off my
fingers I lifted the bag and there was a note there. I opened
it and it read: "Dear Dad: All my life I've bragged to all my
friends that my dad could do anything that he put his mind to.
It has become a great disappointment to me to realize that my
dad is really just a weak minded, fool who can't even beat a
bad habit that is doing him so much harm." I read the note
several times then put the note back and the cigarette. I
thought I'd try to quit for a week and then come read this note
again and make up my mind whether I'd confess to the family
that I was weak or try for another week. I read that note for
six weeks and after watching my boy stop in the well house and
count the cigarettes in the pack for a year, I finally told him
that he could pick up his note and I thanked him for his help.
Now even the smell of cigarettes makes me sick. So don't quit
trying, its worth it.

Maren, I'm suspicious April isn't even PG and it's all a hoax
to see how many people buy into watching her like eagles,
ducks, hummingbirds, pandas, gorillas, etc. I did look up
gestation of giraffes and it's 13 to 15 months so when did she
become "with giraffe"?? Does anyone know?

Maren, I've enjoyed being educated about the Iditarod,
especially this year's description of Mitch Seavey's 15 minute
drill at rest stops. But I do have one question: why is
there such an enormous gap between first and the last place
finishers? They're coming in what, two or three days later?
That would be like a marathon runner coming in the day after
the winner crosses the finish line. Are there no minimum
standards of experience or competence required to enter? Can
a person enter just for the experience? Please enlighten me.
[Bill, There are so many factors. Not everyone
has the time to devote 24/7/365 to dog taining
like the Seaveys. Not everyone has sponsor(s)
that help defray expenses so they have other
jobs. I know they have to finish some other
races before they can even enter... and there's
an entry fee... sometimes dogs get sick...
especially those at the "back of the pack"...
they pick up stuff from dogs ahead of them on
the trail ... then the musher will stay longer
at a check point ... maybe the dogs will get
better... or they may drop a dog or two... that
will slow them down some too... maybe the musher
gets a bug and has to spend extra time healing
... or maybe even scratch from the race ...
maybe a dog may have sore wrists and need extra
time massaging them ... there's a tremendous
amount of planning that agoes into each race,
too. They try to polan where they will stop/rest
and have food and straw sent to the check point
ahead of time so the food is there when they
arrive. There are 25 or 30 Iditarod Air Force
pilots that donate their time and plane for that
kind of thing... and they also help with all the
"dropped dogs" ... If a dog gets a sore wrist
(or whatever) the dog is dropped at the next
checkpoint and then flown to either Anchorage or
Nome to be reunited with the musher after the
race. You drop a few dogs early in the race and
you're gonna be going slower than those teams
that still have 16 dogs. Ijust checked and only
two teams finished with 16 dogs --- #5 Jessie
Royer and #62 Allen Eischens... and they keep
track of how many miles per hour each team goes
as they progress down the trail... push your
dogs too fast too early and some can't keep up
the pace... some just travel slower... the
announcers said that Mitches team always looked
great... and they'd be trotting along at a
blistering 10mph ro 11mpg and still looked
great... they might even have to drop their best
leader and without a good leader, that can slow
things down, too. -Maren]

Junior Lisa BRATTON (RHS '14 home schooled) helped the Texas
A&M 400-year medley relay team take second in the nation and
earned an All-American honorable mention for her performance in
the 200 individual medley at the NCAA Championships on Thursday
in Indianapolis.
The 400 replay broke a school record with its time of 3
minutes, 27.60 seconds, and tied for the highest relay finish
in A&M's history.
BRATTON finished 14th in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.22.

Monday 3/20/17 is Spring!! My Tulips are up now just have to
clean up the flower beds! Been reading about all of you that
have quit smoking! I quit smoking for 20 years, then my life
was going to hell in a hand basket! I bought a pack of cigs I
smoked one like I'd been smoking for the last 20 years! After
15 years I asked myself what the hell was I doing!? So I
stopped Again! I have been smoked free since May of 2009! But I
have no desire to light up ever again! God Bless All of us Non-
smokers!!

stopping speeders, educating students on the
dangers of drugs and gang violence and talking
people out of crisis situations.
But for the past 1 1/2 years, the retired
Richland sergeant's lone adversary has been his
body.
VOWELS, 63, is battling severe aplastic anemia -
a rare disease in which bone marrow does not
make enough blood cells.
Blood, bone marrow and platelet drives have
drawn overwhelming numbers, and a GoFundMe
account https://www.gofundme.com/3gcd1t4
started a little over two weeks ago by VOWELS'
niece already has raised $11,200 of the $20,000
goal.
A bone marrow and blood drive is planned from
noon to 6pm. March 31 in the activity room at
the Richland Community Center, 500 Amon Park
Drive. The event will be handled by the American
Red Cross and Be The Match.
People who are healthy, between 18 and 44, and
want to register as a bone marrow/stem cell
donor can do it at

join.bethematch.org/hopeforsarge. A swab kit
will be mailed to their home with instructions
and a confirmation.
The family is keeping people updated on VOWELS'
progress with a Facebook group page. A Meal
Train also has been set up to help those family

Tri-Cities, especially while Kinlock and Brock
swap duties as primary caregivers for their dad
in Seattle."

Charlotte passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2017, in Prescott,
AZ. She had been wheelchair bound for 3 1/2 years due to a
stroke that left her unable to walk. No services are planed.

Re: ahhhhhhh grade school memories
Today I got two of my favorite Spalding kids... of course the
Spalding cinches that pretty well... Oh sure I wasn't invited
back for 6th grade but some of my most wonderful memories
center around that school experience and these two kids...
One was the brother of one of my very goodest friends... but
even tho he was a whole year older he did not make us feel
unwanted... he hadda vocal group in Grade School and they were
the hit of the school... I could always go to his house and
find these great magazines with all of the latest lyrics to
alla great songs... what a trip... I've mentioned before my joy
in spending the evening with the late Chuck Berry one evening
in Vegas... well I got alla words to his songs at this Bomber's
house long before there was the internet... The Bomber-babe was
another one who invited me to spend hours in her home... in
fact... the neighborhood kids would pool their books and she
would then check them out to us... .maybe ya hadda be there...
but it was fun... so HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Kenny PERTERSON ('64) and
Nina JONES ('65) on your special day, March 21, 2017!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Glenn EKLUND ('71) Update
Glenn was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer a few weeks ago.
He is having good days and bad days, but is hanging in there.
Jack SWANSON ('71) and I drove up to Bremerton a couple of
weeks ago to visit... the outpouring of support from family,
friends, and so many of his former students (Glenn and wife
Rita both taught for 30+ years) is amazing... very nice to see
the profound impact they have had on so many lives.
Below is a recent post on their Facebook page that Rita asked
me to share... she said Glenn would love to hear from his
classmates.
"Just a quick update on Glenn's progress from the
inside of the Eklund household!! He had his
second immunotherapy last Thursday in the midst
of a horrible rash and low grade fevers. Seven
days of fevers took its toll and we ended up in
ER for hydration and steroids late Friday night.
After a rough weekend and Monday we were in the
clinic today getting more hydration and more
steroids. We are praying we have turned a corner
to a less bumpy patch of this uncertain journey.
The good news is that his balance seems better
and he is using a cane instead of a walker and
we are encouraging him to walk laps around the
Eklund race track. He is also doing more things
independently which is good for his emotional
well being. His speech is a little clearer, but
his huge smile is still paralyzed. We can feel
his smile as his sense of humor cracks us up!
I'm not gonna lie, this is like being in a time
warp and the roller coaster ride is tiring, but
we are So Blessed! The outpouring of love,
prayers, meals, visits, cards, text messages,
emails, tree trimming, gifts for Ruby, funny
movies, crazy hats and eye glasses and so much
more continues to amaze and humble us.
God's Love is Shining Through All of You! Thank
you does not seem adequate for what we feel.
We are Blessed Beyond Belief!

I need to apologize for not having worked on the over 500
photos taken by Dana Faith Photography (daughter of Jim
Schildknecht) at the reunion last August. It is a very

Due to having had eye surgeries both in January and February,
injuring my back the end of January plus enjoying time with our

While many of us have been following the progress of the Oregon
State Women, the Husky Women, and the Oregon men in the NCAA
tournament, I'd like to trumpet another great accomplishment.
The WSU Lady Cougars have reached the Elite 8 in the NIT
Tournament. This team, which lost four players, including
their top three, for much of the season, has battled through
incredible challenges to mold into a solid team made up of
mostly bench players who now believe in themselves. They've
won three straight games in the NIT, two of them on the road.
For a team that had never before won a post season game, it's a
terrific accomplishment. Next they travel to Iowa for a spot
in the Final Four. Congratulations, Lady Cougs!

During my Spalding days there was a place to gather... Oh yeah,
we guys wandered the town just like the little hoods from every
other class... but the B-day Bomber-babe's house was "the"
place to hang out... later on, for me anyway, it would be the
Park at Stevens and VanGiesen and Parkers' ('60; '63-RIP and
"65) also at Stevens and VanGiesen, which meant that I just
hadda walk across the street, as I also lived at Stevens and
VanGiesen... more memories were created at the "hang-outs"
than 'I can count and as with most all kids from Richland our
memories form the glue that holds us all together... the
"little" pool, the "big" pool, Uptown, Downtown, the drive-ins,
Zips, Tastee Freez, A&W and just hangin' out at the River(s)...
who could ask for more... when I left Richland, I was almost
shocked that fries weren't always served with tarter... talk
about withdrawal!!!!!!!!! I started using mayo, which was not
the best substitute inna world but since I've never been a fan
of the red stuff (regardless how you spell it) it hadda do...
looking back I guess if that was my biggest problem of the day

"An act of kindness turned into $10,000 for a
former Richland teacher"
In 1977, one phone call helped shape a boy's
life.
When Shannon HOUTROUW ('79) joined the Richland
High School cross country team he expected to
work, but he didn't expect it to be so hard.
He was in the middle of a run, when he decided
to quit and go home.
Coach Michael Mills was concerned about the new
runner, and, not knowing about HOUTROUW's
decision, he called the boy.
'Too chicken to tell him I'd quit after one
practice; I assured him I wouldn't make that
mistake again,' HOUTROUW wrote about his former
coach and math teacher.
The phone call, the decision to stay and the
relationship that formed afterward left an
impression that endured roughly 40 years, and
led HOUTROUW to nominate Mills for a Stephen
Sondheim Inspirational Teacher Award in 2017.
Mills, a retiree after 30 years at Richland High
School, was one of 10 teachers who won the
award, which comes with a $10,000 prize, this
year. The John F. Kennedy Center for Performing
Arts created the award in honor of the
composer's 80th birthday.
When HOUTROUW left Richland High School, he
ended up in the teaching profession. His success
in Kalamazoo, Mich., as a computer science
teacher made him think about the instructors who
influenced him.
HOUTROUW, a finalist for the Presidential Award
for Excellence in Mathematics and Science
Teaching, has been called one of the best high
school computer science teachers in the nation."

the other day... I always heard that it was cut in Chuck's
basement... both made great recordings and I also gotta say
that Johnny Rivers' covers always make me smile... Pitts is
my music "go to" guy... he mentioned Lonnie Donegan a while
back... he made some really good recordings, but unfortunately
this poor Scotsman is pretty much only remembered in this
county for "Does your chewing gum lose its flavor"... hey we
don't get to pick our 15 minutes of fame I guess... today I
celebrate the birth of my first baby-sitter and one of the best
joke tellers around... I miss one for Bomber Lunches in Vegas
and the other for his daily stream of jokes by email and some

skinny kid in school, he grew into a big strong guy with
hands that could make me whimper when he would grab me by the

Re: So it started like this
In the beginning... of the Sandstorm, I began posting now and
then when really close, close buds were having birthdays...
two of them are celebrating today... in those days, I kept the
dates on the margin of my check register... each time I would
need a new register, I would transfer the names and dates...
soon I needed to use a larger "cheat sheet"... in 2003, I
asked Maren to share her list with me and have hand written
additions on it ever since... What started as a once inna
while has grown to a seldom miss posting... and I love it...
keeping track of Bomber Birthdays is one of those things that
just makes me feel really good... Luckily for many, I have
pretty much exhausted "intimate" stories... and just pretty
much share memories of growing up in Richland... Oh it's not
that I couldn't say that one of these guys became my lifelong
bud in early grade school (tho at the time we did not go to
the same school)... I could mention that Christmas of 6th or
7th grade he got the transistor radio I wanted and one of my
most vivid memories is hearing "It's now or Never" standing
across from Jimmy HEIDLEBAUGH's ('65) house... I could share
the origin of his facial scars as the result of growing about
30 inches inna week... the clothesline pole to the head... an
attempt at ice skating... He has also built a good half or
more of the schools in the Tri-cities, including our own
Col-Hi (don't confuse me with the facts my mind on names is
made up)... ah but did I mention several of us found the
"Art Dewald" sign in his garage? Now I'm not accusing and the
sign is right where it should be these days... nuther guy was
one of the biggest jokesters next to Shelley McCOY ('63-RIP)
and one of the Bomber-babes and I have known each other
forever and the other was my very first slow dance to
"Mr. Blue"... so I still got stories... but I would never
wish to come close to Rick MADDY's ('67) Award for longest
post... So HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Carol WISE ('64), Bonnie BRISTOL

Getting closer to the end of March, which means folks in the
NorthWest will soon learn the fate of two college basketball
teams, well four if you count the other two. The only guess
I'll make is, sorry Ducks but them Tar Heels is just too much.

celebrate. Knew him back in the day, but don't remember her.
Which is all right, because she doesn't remember me.

Does anyone remember Deannie LAUGHLIN who would have graduated
in 1956. She passed away on March 14, 2017, in Redding, CA.
She happens to be my ex.
We got married in October, 1955, and I thought it was going to
work out. Many of our friends were at the ceremony.
She finished one semester and dropped out to have a baby boy
on March 5, 1956. She moved out of state in or about May, 1956
without letting me know. Just skipped out.
My son finally found me in 1985. What a surprise that was.
Came rolling up on a big Harley to the house in Kennewick. I
did not know him from Adam. The last time I had seen him was
when he was 2 months old in Idaho. What a shock. He was an
officer in the Coast Guard and finally retired a few years
later after we met.
By the way, we are very close now. One never knows. Does
one...

I think it was 7 years ago when I ran into and had lunch with
Bill in Anacortes, WA. The "quick" lunch ended up being a
several hour discussion of all the things we were wrapped up
in, in life. Both of us had something going in at least 2
fields of endeavor at the time.
One of his was a rotating device originally intended to
recover gold from tailing piles from mines in Alaska. A small
group of people were experimenting with it and while it did
not recover minute specks of gold it did appear to purify
water.
Long story short I put $30K down for a PPM share. Watching the
development of this device over the years would take at least
3000 words to describe. But I said "short" so the news is that
at last I have been given the go ahead to make some
preliminary sales calls. This comes from a long letter I typed
about organizing a world wide sales effort and sent to the
CEO. Bill called me and said the CEO was asking "Who the hell
is this guy?" Again keeping this short Verno Holdings will
likely adopt much of what I wrote for an international sales
effort. Additionally they needed a 200 HP electric motar to
provide power to turn the device. I found one at the motor
shop next door to my fireworks company. Harry had just had it
rewound and it was in like new condition. He made me a great
price on it and Verno bought it in a heartbeat. Bill BERLIN
('56-RIP) was intensely involved in Verno and was responsible
for introducing me to the CEO who is also a CPA.
It was a sad day when Bill lost his fight with melanoma. He
has my respect and gratitude. Along with getting something to
do in my retirement our $30K is now worth nearly $50K. I
turned down $45K just this last week. We are not really
interested in selling. I suspect we may be in for some
traveling to introduce the "Verno Rainmaker" in various
places.
The best part is that the device works! Put the intake hose in
the ocean and drink what comes out of the back side. That is a
bit over simplified but it does work. It has been extensively
tested in agricultural waste water, oil well fracking water,
salt water and other types of dirty water. I will be some kind
of assistant to the VP of Marketing. Now that the news of it's
success is getting out several reputable financial entities
are at the door. Partnerships are in development at this time.
They already have land the State of Louisiana for the first of
several manufacturing facilities.
Jackie and I are headed to the island of Malta on Fireworks
business on behalf of a sponsor looking to invest in some
special fireworks devices. We have a Tuesday AM flight on BOAC
via Heathrow/London. But while we are there I will make a call
on the Malta Water Resources office. With little or no
rainfall potable water is scarce. They use Reverse Osmosis (a
series of filters) to make the potable water supply. It is
time consuming and relatively expensive.
The "Verno" device with diesel engine power supply (for use
when electric power is not available) and controls would fit
in a standard shipping container. That kind of unit can be
shipped to and set near any water supply. Yes I am excited.
This machine may well revolutionize water supplies around the
world. It will produce municipal quantities of water at
municipal pricing.

The other day, Pitts ('63) asked about songs that didn't make
it on the charts but are still personal favorites... my three
personal favorite songs from 1960 made number 1, 12 and 62.
They were my favorites, however in reverse order to their
positions on the charts... all three were dynamite slow dance
songs with number 1 ranking prolly one of the absolute top
slow dance songs of our era... As Doug HAWKINS ('62) would say
"lotsa belt buckles were brought to a brilliant shine" by

wuz still a little kid (a lower classman as some would say)
the B-day Bomber-babe wuz a Senior and the guy wuz a Jr.
Eventually I would come to know the babe much better along
with her other half, whom I admire greatly... I would finally
be allowed to sit at the big kids table, with the promise I
wouldn't spill my milk... I did manage to spill my water all
over Dave SIMPSON ('63) one time but have been pretty good
about keeping my promise... so HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Linda BELLISTON

Re: wind and crushes
Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang... today we have had Richland in Vegas...
the wind has brought back many memories of the wind storms we
had in Richland when we were kids... which in turn reminds me
of the great two by four kite adventure... I only met my
grandparents a few times. Once when we went back "east" to
Chicago and Wichita, Kansas and met my Pop's family... as he
left home at 12 and came from an extremely large family, he
was unaware that several of his sisters were sisters and not
nieces... my mom's parents came to Richland for a visit when
I lived next door to the house now occupied by Kenny PETERSON
('64) across from the dike on Haines... my Mom's parents were
not the Norman Rockwell type and I was less than fond of
them... never the less, my grandpa tried to buddy up by making
me a kite... now I am pretty sure that kites of the day ran a
nickel or a dime... but he wanted to make one... I am not sure
where he got the cross members but am pretty sure they weighed
in at a combined 10-20 pounds... then he used some heavy paper
for the covering and expected me to fly the damned thing...
even running down the dike, the kite made furrows in the
ground about 15 inches deep or so... luckily one of "those"
winds came up... the sky was so dark you couldn't see anything
and the kite flew (kinda) into the river... thank goodness...
now to the Celebrations... I just realized I have never
admitted to having a huge crush on the b-day Bomber-babe
in school... ok I now admit it... I can say I never had a
crush on the guy celebrating today...
