What an exciting story about Richland's conception and
beginnings. Thank you for sharing the history of our home town.
My dad was there in 1944 living in the barracks working for
Westinghouse / government (along with Dick Donnell of Dupus
Boomer fame) in the administration personnel office. He finally
procured a new B-house in South part of Richland - everything
was sand and dirt when my mother, baby brother and I arrived in
June, 1945 - I was just 6 years old then. Across the street
were Pre-fabs and I thought they were very strange houses. A
year or two later we moved into a new H-house just around the
corner. Sometime in the '50s we moved into an R-house in the
North part of Richland where I attended the brand new Chief
Joseph Jr. High. I remember living in the B-house that dad paid
someone in construction to bring over a huge pile of top soil
and my mother worked several days spreading it around the
house, ending up with severe 2nd degree sun burns that required
a hospital stay.
Pete, I appreciate your account of the early history of
Richland - it's a great story.

I remember the celebration held when Richland was incorporated
into a city (or town or whatever), ending its history as a
government town. Part of the celebration including exploding a
miniature 'mushroom' bomb. There was also an essay contest for
students, which I remember only because I won an honorable
mention.
I'm a die-hard Bomber fan, which isn't easy since I belong
to the Mesa Writers Guild, and all of the ladies in it are
liberals. I occasionally wear my shirt from the '62 50 year
reunion to meetings just to irk them.

Oh boy... I wait all year long for the Rat Fink Reunion up at
Big Daddy's digs make sure everything is lubed and greased and
watered and and and... then it hits me I gotta get up at
2:30am!!!!!! oh my as Leo WEBB ('63) would say... called my
daughter and told her to be here at 4am and she said we don't
need to leave till 4:30... she's right but if she gets here at
4:30 we won't leave at 4:30 because we hafta pack her stuff...
and then this and then that and then we'll be in trubel with

I doubt the Secretary of Defense ('68) would go along with
naming the high school after him. That is just my guess.
Secretary MATTIS was known as the 'Warrior Monk' (out of the
respect of him being a life-long bachelor) by his Marines.
Also, Chaos. During his grilling (confirmation hearing) by a
Congressional committee, he told the senators "Mad Dog" came
from the media. I do not believe he would want that moniker
used. I have not heard if the President has stopped calling him
that or not. I have no foot in that door.
Richland High School Warrior Monks will not fly. Maybe the
Secretary would go with the school's library being named after
him and give all his books to it. His answer will no doubt be
classic.
I do not believe it will be long before the millennials, or
whatever they are called, and other liberal thinking people
will be changing their minds and stop playing with our history.
At some point in time, and we certainly do not know when, there
will most likely be a crisis where the Federal government
starts scooping 18-35 year olds off the street like a snow
shovel cleaning a winter drive way like they did with many
Bombers starting with the Korean War and then the Vietnam War,
an engagement here and a skirmish there and the in-betweens
ever since. Then and only then will this generation, and you
know who you are, shut their foolish mouths.
Anyone who tries to erase, hide, or whatever they think they
are doing by getting rid of our mascot, or even Confederate
statues and other historical names, places and things to make
us look like we all got here because we are Nation of nice guys
is skewed. We are not nice guys. The history of the United
States is chock full of horror, misery and death. Just ask a
Native American. First it was the Spaniards for a few hundred
years coming from the South. Then the Europeans for a few
hundred years coming from the East. We all took history in
school. We all know where we came from. We all have blood on
our hands.
The drill is this: if somebody on the planet doesn't like us,
then they are welcome to pick up their rifle and come and get
us. They know where we live. We witnessed this on 9-11. We have
witnessed it in recent bombings and shootings by terrorists
amongst us. Now, I was not born when Japan attacked Navy ships
at Pearl on a Sunday morning and shot up civilians and any
other targets of opportunity; including women and children. We
could not get a plane into the fight. I have doubts that will
happen again. History does not repeat itself. People do. How
many times did we succeed in our battles since 1776 by the
folly of our enemies? Many times. Nothing is guaranteed in war.
War is the last option. Always. Bombers know that more than
most and we all know why.
My gggg-grandfather was chasing down rear guard Brits at
Monmouth during their retreat to New York. He died an old man
and he and his wife are buried in Adams county, Ohio. So you
are warned that if it is not your generation, then it will be
your children or grandchildren that will pay a big price for
your blind stupidity. Trust me.
In the meantime, we leave the high school name and mascot where
it is. Find some other cause for your bumper sticker. IMHO.

Photo: My gggg-grandparent's grave in Ohio. He was a cannoneer
with the Maryland Militia. This was his third enlistment. A
history teacher can fix this for me if need be. The men in the
established districts would get the call and the units would
form and march off to wherever. Then go home. Therefore, when
somebody says their relative was a Revolutionary War soldier,
that is pretty much every American male living in the Colonies
who are at least sixteen years of age (along with the many
who lied about their age), if my memory serves me correct.
Married with children and/or not.
Dec. 8, 1776: Thomas enlists as a volunteer and served three
and one half months as an Orderly Sergeant (this is an Army
rank of the four ranks of sergeants in the late 1700s) in the
MD Militia, 36th Reg. Vol.; Regimental command - Col. Joseph
Smith and Company command - Capt. James Smith. They marched
from Hagerstown to Philadelphia to Correll's Ferry to Lord
Sterling's and engaged at Quibbletown.
Thomas was then pressed into service as an Orderly Sergeant
under Capt. Smith while guarding prisoners at Fort Frederick,
MD. He was also for a short time under the command of Col.
Shryrock (spelling?) ferreting out and capturing Tories. On one
outing they captured about 100, hanged two of the captains and
marched the rest to Hagerstown, MD.
June 10, 1778: Thomas reenlists as a private and serves nine
months under Capt. Nathan Williams in Col. Otho Williams' MD
Reg. They marched from Hagerstown to Fredericktown to Tanney
(Taney) Town to York to Valley Forge where they joined the main
Army and engaged the British forces at Monmouth; attacking the
British rearguard as they (the Brits) moved out toward New
York. The command then marched to New Brunswick where Thomas is
discharged.

David DOUGLAS ('62) mentions the in-town mini-nuclear blast
and his honorable mention in the Richland essay contest.
(Congratulations, but what was that wad of paper he was seen
tossing into the conflagration?)
The simulated "A" bomb blast took place in the Uptown Richland
area on December 12, l958. It was part of the three day
celebration for the incorporation of Richland as a "first
class city" on December 10. The U. S. Army, Camp Hanford,
built the device and the deputy general manager and director
of production for the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), E. J.
Block, pushed the button.
The day before, on December 11, the City Council held its
first meeting, and Mrs (!) E.T. "Pat" Merrill was elected mayor
of the council. John B. Nason, father of John NASON ('62), was
appointed acting city attorney. Commencement Day Exercises
were held in the Bomber Bowl on December 13. Governor Albert
Rossellini and U. S. Senator Warren G. Magnuson were among the
dignitaries who showed up for the ceremony.
Now, as for things atomic, here's a possibly interesting
comparative note for us Hanford downwinders... By the numbers,
how do twelve years of Hanford stack up against, say, one day
at Chernobyl or at Three Mile Island? Hint: decimal points
matter...
An interim Seattle Times article (July 29, 1990) reports
radioactive airborne discharge levels for Hanford (mostly
accidental or unintentional). For the 12-year period 1944 to
1956 Hanford discharged 500,000 curies of radioactive iodine
(a curie is a measure of how fast a radioactive substance
disintegrates, giving off radiation). Much more tightly
controlled emissions continued up until 1988.
By comparison, the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in Russia
discharged twelve times this total amount in a single day
(not 0.5 million, but 6.0 million curies). Fatalities were
high (I think 15,000) and the place is still a deserted and
off-limits ghost town.
The much dramatized (and very contained) March 1979 Three Mile
Island event in Pennsylvania discharged a total of only 15
(that's fifteen, as in 0.000015 million) curies.
The biggest single airborne radioactive iodine discharge from
Hanford was called the Green Run, on Dec. 2, 1949, and emitted
some 7,780 curies (0.00778 million). Its purpose was to
calibrate equipment needed to monitor Soviet nuclear arsenal
production levels, and was kept secret until 1986. The Green
Run airborne radioactive iodine plume spread out (and diluted)
over most of Eastern Washington and Eastern Oregon.
A 1988 report found that only "0.08 millirem is the largest
dose any member of the public received" [that year]-compared
to the much larger 300 millirem per year we already get from
natural background sources. (millirem: one thousandth of a
roengten or X-ray unit).
Iodine is fairly short-lived and decays away in a few months,
while other radioactive residues do not-those mixed with either
ventilation air, or liquid waste (the 77 million gallons stored
the 57 much-reported underground storage tanks now subject to
long-term cleanup), or cooling water (into the Columbia). The
purified liquids not stored in the 57 tanks had 95 percent of
the total radioactivity removed, and over the years were
spread across large tracts of Hanford sand. These skimmings of
radioactive tritium deteriorate quickly, with a radioactive
half-life of twelve years. The outer edge of the groundwater
plume has lost its kick over the past decades. The tritium
batch of 1945, for example, has lost over 98 percent (63/64ths)
of its dumpsite radioactivity by 2017. (Yes?)
Going back to the airborne iodine, the health focus has been
mostly on downwinders and the risk of eventual thyroid cancer,
the possible outcome of many repeated doses of daily new
radioactive iodine from grass-eating, local milk cows. (And,
babies accumulate ten times more iodine in their thyroids than
do adults.) But I recall declining successfully for months, in
the early 1990s, to be interviewed as a targeted Richland
downwinder. The researchers were intensely interested in sets
of Richland twins growing up in the 1940s and '50s.
I'm wondering how other Sandstorm readers responded, and any
other thoughts????

Was waiting for this predictable observation. The Bomber mascot
issue is simply a liberal thing. Hmmmmm, the issue has been
around for at least 50 years and those who think it is a
liberal thing are off target, or wrong.
And millennials don't "call themselves" that. It is another
invented label applied by us older folks in stereotyping a
demographic. As a baby boomer I never understood lumping tens
of millions of individuals together as if they were a single,
common class of people. I will never get that.

About those milk bottles.
We have a couple of the small, 8 oz milk bottles from the days
of yore. They make nice cruets to meter out an evening's ration
of wine for dinner. You can sometimes find them in antique
shops. Like nearly all cruets, they do dribble after pouring,
which can make an unsightly ring on the dining room table. The
solution? Beer coasters that we pocket during our travels!
As I said, much more serious matters.

Thanks Mike FRANCO ('70) for debunking that taking away our
mascot is a "liberal" thing. It is just revisionist history,
and not a very good revision at that.
Many of us are old enough to remember when both political
parties actually talked to each other and tried to work
together. Some of us grew up in homes with a democrat father and
republican mother, or vice-versa. Believe me, politics is NOT
about what my parents fought. Growing up, does anyone remember
political labels? I don't remember Ralph or Maxine (dad and
Mom) ever referring to anyone as conservative or liberal. There
were just communists and US.
I'm proud of my Bomb that resides in my front yard. Someone
even left me a note one day that said, "Go Bombers." I have far
more trouble with the name of our high school being "changed -
changed for some very odd reason.

until after certain revisionist-history school teachers started
making a stink about the bomb and the cloud. I can't pin down

Let me get your Sandstorm entry straight. Most of the people who
have a problem understanding The Cloud are "terrible, no-good,
very bad" liberals and moderates are just liberals in disguise
therefore the only OK people in this world are conservatives.
I'm sure I misunderstand what you are trying to say. If not,
there doesn't seem to be much room in your world for people to
exist as worthwhile individuals if they hold a different opinion
than you. Please tell me I'm wrong.
Maren, I know this is "political" but every time the mascot
controversy comes up people start taking shots at liberals in
the Sandstorm and it's not OK with me. Use your best judgement.

Let's recall those lazy childhood days in Richland when we
sprawled on the grass trying to see patterns in the clouds. On
slow summer days in the exciting late '50s-before laws against
noise pollution-the blue sky sometimes brought a wall-rattling
sonic boom, and a glance upward revealed the linear vapor trail
clouds behind swept-wing B-52 Stratofortress bombers based up
north at Moses Lake Air Force Base.
Then there's the very different and less-noticed cloud
meditation by an unnamed fourteenth-century monk, called
The Cloud of Unknowing. Between the '50s and even the '80s,
according to a recent translator, this cloud changed from being
"a species of foolishness" into a "mystical text [that] has a
relevant message for the modern age." Another cloud capable of
more than one meaning. And what then of the biblical "cloud of
witnesses" reported in the biblical Letter to the Hebrews
(12:1), often attributed to St. Paul. Or, today the very
different, and all-knowing and all-seeing surveillance of the
Internet cloud that now hovers over every smartphone?
Then, there's our late 1960s bomb cloud, no longer the bomb
but now a revisionist mascot.. This blasted cloud might be
described best by the general who actually engineered it,
General Groves (after whom Richland's placid Leslie Groves Park
[was named]). In his Memorandum for the Secretary of the War
(Stimson) from the predawn test at Alamogordo, New Mexico, July
16, 1945, he said:
"The whole country was lighted by a searing light with the
intensity many times that of the midday sun [the 6,000
centigrade blast is also the surface temperature of the sun;
iron melts at 1500 degrees]. It was golden, purple, violet, gray
and blue. It lighted every peak, crevasse and ridge of the
nearby mountain range with a clarity and beauty that cannot be
described but must be seen to be imagined. It was that beauty
the great poets dream about but describe most poorly and
inadequately. Thirty seconds after the explosion, [there] came
first the air blast pressing hard against the people and things,
to be followed almost immediately by the strong, sustained,
awesome roar which warned of doomsday and made us feel that we
puny things were blasphemous to dare tamper with the forces
heretofore reserved to The Almighty."
Such imagery from the very military Commanding General of the
Manhattan District Project? Not quite. Groves and Brigadier
General Thomas F. Farrell had a policy of staying separated
whenever there was a risk of mishaps. It was from his
observation point, 10,000 yards south of the point of explosion,
that Farrell penned the above. Others noticed that as this
particular cloud rose skyward the prevailing winds twisted it
into what looked like a five-mile high question mark... .J. Robert
Oppenheimer, the inventor-scientist, blurted his possibly
rehearsed and famous line from the Hindu Scripture, the Bhagavad
Gita: "Now I have become death, the destroyer of worlds." His
colleague, Kenneth Bainbridge, the on-site physicist in charge
of the actual test, responded in the more vernacular: "Well,
Oppie, now were all sons of bitches!
In the end even Truman was conflicted. First he said to the
National Council of Churches: "When you have to deal with a
beast, you have to treat him as a beast." But later, according
to the Secretary of Commerce (Wallace): "Truman said he had
given orders to stop atomic bombing. He said the thought of
wiping out another 100,000 people was too horrible. He didn't
like the idea of killing as he said, 'all those kids'" (The
Price of Vision, ed. Blum, p. 474).

I think enough is enough. It's making my head spin.
I'm beginning to wonder if we haven't been taken over by Daleks.
You remember their motto: "Eliminate! Exterminate!" No matter

To be honest, they were only characters in a somewhat "cheesy"
sci-fi drama. But I really fear their mentality has taken hold.

have led with a compliment about the roast, but he had NOT said
there was anything wrong with it; he just wanted to know where
the wife bought the it. The offense taken by the wife was simply
imagined.
The point of that little story is that, in trying to communicate
effectively, it is usually much better to pay attention to the
words that ARE spoken or written and far less to some imagined
meaning.

This is a small display for the LeMay Car Museum the worlds
largest car collection. Located in Tacoma this is our 5th year
for this event for a fund raiser for the museum, a formal affair
titled "Heels and Wheels".
We had to use small products as the area is confined, but it
came out nice. You can hear the response of the attendees of the
party on a balcony of the museum.

The lady who did the video was not one of my crew. She walked up
took the video and left. Someone else in the pyro world found
the video and told us about it. But they got the date wrong. I
did not catch it and that is my fault. Sorry bout that.
I don't know what the problem is with access to Jackie's blog
of our travels, she has had that address for years. Here it is

ventures.
Unfortunately Travelpod is closing down on the 17 of June.
They did provide a way to copy the whole file so Jackie can re-
open our travel blog elsewhere.
Today is Thursday the 8th. We are in SW Oregon attending to a
bit of my business. The business part of the trip being finished
we are driving up to Crater Lake for some photography, weather
allowing. Much of that National Park is still closed from winter
snows. One entrance is open and so we will make the trip up the
mtn.
My Blazer has all wheel drive and I have a new set of high
traction all weather tires. They were great in a snow storm in
northern MT. So we are off to see what can be seen.
One last item: I have a number of good starts of American Black
Walnut trees compliments of a family of squirrels.
The walnut tree in my back yard is about 30 years old and is
roughly 70 feet tall and 60 feet from side to side. On the west
side of the property it shades a quarter of an acre. The first
night I spent in the house after buying it, lightning hit that
tree in a huge explosion waking up the entire neighborhood at 3
AM. Despite that, the last couple of years we estimate 800 to
1000 walnuts on this giant tree with a dozen or more squirrels
feasting on them.
I am in the midst of doing some landscape cleanup. So....
IF...there is some interest in these trees I would dig them up
and plant them in buckets. My thought is they would be available
to anyone who makes a donation to the scholarship fund. Say $20
or more?
If there is some interest in these I would want to be sure they
are growing and healthy after digging them up. There may be as
many as 20. They would be available to plant next spring. I
would also have a few healthy holly trees.
Friday is Jackie's birthday so the day is hers to command.
I hope the above clears things up and give's access to the blog
to interested parties.

It's that time again! '65ers gather and Cool Desert Nights (CDN)
is almost in full swing! The festivities begin on June 22, 2017.
CDN's fans will gather at the DQ with cars and stars (well,
cars anyway). Please don't forget that Pat Davis (NAB) will be
holding a Celebration of Life for Craig DAVIS ('65-RIP) between
4-7 PM at the Gaslight. Craig and I were inseparable during my
tenure at Spalding. If one was there the other was close by. I
hope many of you can make it. My stupid flight doesn't get in
till 8pm so I will miss Craig's memorial but will certainly be
there in spirit. I will mosey over to the DQ to catch the die
hards and get something to eat. Friday, naturally I'll be at the
Spudnut Shop bright and early. Later we will Gather at Cecilia
BENNETT's ('65) for the watch the cars gathering on the east
side of GWWay just south of Haines. Kids from all classes
invited... it ain't just a '65er thing no more! Bring chairs if
you have them and your favorite beverage. Terry DAVIS ('65),
Cecilia and I will bring some kind of eats, but fried chicken
and other delights are very welcome. Saturday Spudies and cars
in the Uptown and the park. Nothing planned but always willing
to join a crowd for dinner. If someone wants to host something
else, lemme know. Not sure about Sunday. My plane leaves about
as late on Sunday as it arrives Thursday so I'll be hangin'
around.

We had a good turnout for out for the All Bomber lunch. 3 were
first timers being here and said they will be back again.

My copy of "The DustStorm" [Club40 publication] blew into the
mail box on Saturday last. An interesting issue.
Enjoyed Pete BEAULIEU's ('62) synopsis of Richland history. Not
quite up there with the history of Lake Woebegone, but close.
And Bill Large's ('52) photo page [page 11] was also
interesting. I can see why he would have the top two rows of
pictures, but where did the Campfire Girls sneak in from. Be
that as it may, I knew two of the young ladies; graduated with
one of them (Janice BOOTH '54) and was on good terms with the
mother of another (Marla Jo LOWMAN ('55).
And, yes, it rained on the Grand Floral Parade just enough to
mark the "official" end of the rainy season. The next monsoons
are expected about State Fair time (late August-early
September).

Oh, what a let down (or is it an improvement) from one single
entry (mine) on Monday last to another "Not" issue yesterday.
Wassamattau folks, no imagination, no newsworthy bits, no

Well, here's some to think about. There is the "Mostly '54
guys" gathering at Bob's Burgers and Brew and the "Gals of '54"
chowing down at the Richland Applebee's on Friday next.
And on Father's Day, there is the Silverton Strawberry
Festival. They use real strawberries, not those manufactured
ones that come from Californy.

Re: Age-Activated Attention Deficit Disorder
This is how it manifests:
I decide to water my garden.
As I turn on the hose in the driveway,
I look over at my car and decide it needs washing.
As I start toward the garage, I notice mail on the porch table
that I brought up from the mail box earlier. I decide to go
through the mail before I wash the car.
I lay my car keys on the table, Put the junk mail in the
garbage can under the table and notice that the can is full.
So, I decide to put the bills back On the table and take out
the garbage first...
But then I think, Since I'm going to be near the mailbox When I
take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.
I take my check book off the table, and see that there is only
one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, So
I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Diet
Coke I'd been drinking.
I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the
Diet Coke aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over.
The Diet Coke is getting warm, And I decide to put it in the
refrigerator to keep it cold. As I head toward the kitchen with
the Diet Coke a vase of flowers on the counter Catches my eye--
they need water.
I put the Diet Coke on the counter and discover my reading
glasses that I've been searching for all morning. I decide I
better put them back on my desk, But first I'm going to water
the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a
container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote someone
left on the kitchen table.
I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I'll be looking
for the remote, But I won't remember that it's on the kitchen
table, So I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs,
But first I'll water the flowers.
I pour some water in the flowers, But quite a bit of it spills
on the floor so, I set the remote back on the table get some
towels and wipe up the spill.
Then, I head down the hall trying to Remember what I was
planning to do.
At the end of the day:
The car isn't washed.
The bills aren't paid.
There is a warm can of Diet Coke sitting on the counter.
The flowers don't have enough water,
There is still only one check in my check book.
I can't find the remote.
I can't find my glasses.
And I don't remember what I did with the car keys.
Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm
really baffled because I know I was busy all day, And I'm
really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, And I'll try
to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail....
Don't laugh -- if this isn't you yet, your day is coming!
P.S. I don't remember who sent it to me, so if it was you, I'm
sorry

Re: new adventures
Well, I've worn glasses since 6th grade. As I got older my
eyes got worse and I still refused to wear them except when I
really hadda see... driving was one of those times but once I
was there glasses came off... I might be a very rich man if I
had the money for the glasses I either sat on in my back pocket
or the fell out of a shirt pocket when I bent over and stepped
on them. Twice my eyes became a liability... the first time was
when Diane MURPHY ('65) cruised by with her mom and waived at
me... prolly 7th grade... I didn't recognize her and she stuck
her nose in the air... now it is clear that I would never have
had the opportunity to attend one of the Academies with my 12
year credentials, however once in the Corp I was tapped for the
Naval Academy. For whatever reason, the quality of my eyesight
was never questioned... at some point, I was sitting with
General Krulak (RIP) and he was apologizing to me for having to
bump me for my poor eyesight... I only vaguely remember his
words as I couldn't believe this General was telling me he was
sorry for anything that had to do with me... anyway, the point
is, that Terry DAVIS ('65) and I will be showing up to CDN's
with three new eyes... two for me and one for him... he is as
excited about seeing again as I was when my eyes were finished!
Well, I am getting excited about heading home for a long
weekend. My only regret is that I will not be able to
personally hand one of the b-day Bombers his wacky card as I
have in the past... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Gus KEENEY ('57) and Dave
SOWDEN ('62/'63) on you special day, June 14, 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Dust Devil Baseball 2017
Yay, our farm team for the San Diego Padres will have their
first home game next Tuesday, June 20th, at Gesa Stadium in
Pasco. I was so hoping my great nephew would have been drafted
this week in the MLB college draft, but not this year!! He goes
to BYU and 2 others on his team made it! The Padres have been
talking to him and sent to paperwork, but they didn't list him
this time! They told him about the Dust Devils and we were
keeping our fingers crossed!

Re: string... who knew
The other day, my daughter and I were coming back from the
Delinquent's weekly lunch and I needed to buy some cotton string.
I had one of those huge cones in the garage, but hadn't seen it
in a while. I looked high and low... lotsa hemp... but no cotton
string. Now I didn't just start looking recently, I've been
trying to find that damned cone for a while. I searched every
possible nook and cranny... nuthin'... no problem so I had
already checked Wally World with no luck... we stopped at
Michael's nuthin' but puny little strands almost like for sewing
or knitting (I know... maybe ya don't knit with it but it was NOT
good old fashioned string!)... everything, including the stuff
you pull a chalk line with was nylon... I went on the Internet
and found what I was looking for was cooking or butcher's string
(or twine... whatever)... Damn... when did string become and

In answer to the question regarding Patricia BARKER ('81wb)
from Marilyn "Em" DeVINE ('52) in the 6/15/17 Sandstorm,
Patricia did not graduate from high school in Richland. She was
born in Richland and received her early ballet training here
from Lynne Williams in Richland.
"She is a former principal dancer with Pacific Northwest
Ballet and is considered one of the world's most gifted
ballerinas. She, studied on scholarship both at Boston
Ballet School with E. Virginia Williams and Violette
Verdy and Pacific Northwest Ballet School with Francia
Russell, Perry Brunson and Janet Reed. She stages,
rehearses and coaches ballets for professional companies
including staging works for the Balanchine Trust on the
Slovak National Ballet and the Hungarian National
Ballet. In her role as Artistic Advisor for the Slovak
National Ballet, she also advised on programming and
fundraising.
Ms. BARKER is a judge for international ballet
competitions and teaches at nationally renowned ballet
schools. She collaborated with Freed of London,
producing an instructional video answering dancers' most
frequently asked questions about the art of wearing
Pointe shoes. As a member of the artistic team of
Broadway Bound, she choreographed full scale productions
performed by children between the ages of 5 to 18.
Age: 53 or 54 (Would have been RHS '81)
Schooling: Took her first ballet class at age 7. Studied
on scholarship at Boston Ballet School before moving to
Seattle at age 15, where she auditioned and received a
scholarship to enter PNB's dance school.
Pacific Northwest Ballet career: Became an apprentice in
1981; promoted to corps de ballet in 1982, landing her
first major role as Rose, the lead in the "Waltz of the
Flowers" in "Nutcracker." She was promoted to soloist in
1984 and then to principal dancer - the company's
highest ranking - in 1986.
Career highlights
1986: Performed the lead role of Clara in the film
version of PNB's "Nutcracker," titled "Nutcracker: The
Motion Picture."
1994: Appeared as Cinderella, a role created for her by
Kent Stowell for his full-length ballet.
1999: Founded BKWear, her own dancewear company.
1999: Performed the role of Titania in the BBC film
version of PNB's production of Balanchine's "A Midsummer
Night's Dream."
During the past 26 years, she has performed with PNB on
tour throughout Europe, Asia, Australia and North
America and also appeared as a guest artist with
national and international ballet companies. For the
past 15 years, she has staged, rehearsed and coached
ballets for professional companies, including the Boston
Ballet School and the Slovak National Ballet. She has
taught at schools across the nation, and is a
spokeswoman for the U.S. Bone and Joint Decade, helping
raise awareness of bone and joint health."
Ironically Grace Haskins, daughter of Matt HASKINS ('81) and
our niece, is a company dancer at Grand Rapids Ballet under the
direction of Patricia.

Re: Father's Day in Vegas!
Wow... this is a first... for a long time, at least... The L.A.
Roadsters decided to give up the administration of their L.A.
Roadster Show to a promoter who has it for the next 10 years...
as he made this change and that I grew less and less interested
in making my yearly Father's Day trek to the Fairplex for fun and
frolic... the less it sounded like fun, the less my interest was
aroused to the point where I simply decided to bag it... Today,
the delinquents met the two... two guys who decided to give it
one last try... at Stateline for breakfast to see them off as the
guys who are not going always do... I didn't even drive a hot rod
to Stateline... how's that for a dampened interest... just talked
to the boyz and so far it has been the cluster... uhhhhhh... we
figured it would be... Swapers have always been able to set up
way early and they weren't let in till 10am... and then only 10
at a time were "escorted" to their spaces... charging 40 smackers
to come in and shop today, but not leaving your hot rod at the
show further lightened the "crowd" for today... We'll see how
people like having to wait in line with alla late comers tomorrow
morning and pay an added fee if they did not "register" their
cars by June 1... "register??????" Oh my what fun... sooo Sarah
will be taking me to lunch on Sunday for the first time in many
years... we've always done it a day or two after Father's day up
to now... ahhhhhhhhh I love the smell of Nitro and cow poop inna
air (no wait... that's another show I no longer attend)... Oh by
the way, the other day I mentioned General Krulak... no clue
where I got his name... the General I met with was Hockmuth...

Today I got my registration form for our 60 year reunion. We are
having it in conjunction with Club 40.
Marj ('60) and I are attending the Friday night and Saturday night
Club 40 activities.
We are also attending our Class of 1957 Reunion Saturday
afternoon, September 9th, at the Richland Community Center from
noon until 3pm.
The Club 40 activities are optional and a lot of fun. You get good
food, a chance to visit with friends from classes ranging from
1947 to 1977. A good time is had by all.

The weather here was almost perfect for the Silverton Hills
Strawberry Fest. Started out in the mid 70s and wound up around
82° or so. About 4° warmer than I would like, but not too bad.

Re: Silverton strawberries
Your comments on the Silverton Strawberry Festival brings back
fond memories. I was born in Silverton, OR and lived there until
moving to Richland at the tender age of nine. The summers
(springs?) of 1948 and 1949 I accompanied my mother and cousin;
Al PARKER ('53) in the Silverton area fields to pick strawberries.
At that age, I probably was more of a consumer than a picker, but
the memories of the hot fields are still with me.
I don't remember the proper name of the festival, but my younger
brother Jack ('60-RIP) and I were in several Silverton parades
during the mid '40s. We always referred to them as the "pet
parades." Somewhere around here I have a photo of our entry where
Jack was dressed as a sailor with his arm in a sling, I as an army
soldier carrying a wooden rifle and our neighbor gal dressed as a
nurse. We pulled a wagon carrying a big jug of red-colored liquid
with a sign asking folks to donate blood for the (WWII) soldiers.
Won a ribbon or two, as did probably most of the participants.

I really enjoyed Pete BEAULIEU's ('62) article on the history
summary of Richland and local environs. A lot was going on back
in the day. I remember the dug out canoe sitting in front of the
Lewis & Clark Grade School. I was one of the last 8th grade
students leaving the Hanford School and relocating in Richland.
At Hanford, due to rapid attrition, in a matter of a few weeks, I
was promoted from school Safety Patrolman through the ranks to
Captain of the patrol and that lasted only a couple more weeks and
I was on my way to Richland.

The other day, Gary SETBACKEN ('64) posted [musta been on
Facebook. -Maren] a photo of a large sturgeon he caught... when I
was maybe just big enough to grageate from the little to the big
pool, Terry LINDBLOOM ('65) and I were fishing off the rocks with
a string, a hook and a wooden stick... I felt something hit the
line and begin fighting me like crazy... I yelled at Terry to
go down and pull the fish in... he ran to the water and began
yelling: "Cut the line, cut the line; you caught a sea monster!!"
We had never seen anything so ugly in our lives... I cut the line
and we beat feet for home! Ahhhhhh childhood... hey it's almost
time for me to head for Richland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the meantime,

Just want to let the "Tooter" ('65) know that he's getting' outta
Dodge about the right time. Them temps in Lost Wages, Phoenix,

That is not the point. Today is the birthday of one of the
younger Bombers of my recent acquaintance. Met him at one of the

It was a hot time in the old town today. 118° in Phoenix.
Fortunately, Mesa was cooler - only 117. It's getting hard to
keep the pool cool enough to swim. I don't put the cover on now
so it will cool off a bit at night. I may have to start running
the solar heater at night to cool it more.
Sunday was a day of celebrations for us. It was Fathers' Day,
grandson Michael's 14th birthday, and my wife's and my 51st
wedding anniversary. We went to a Chinese buffet for lunch to
celebrate. Then came back to the house for dessert - chocolate
cake and ice cream. Ate so much I skipped supper.
My son has developed liver failure, of unknown cause. He also had
liver cancer - the doctor burned the tumor off with a hot probe
inserted through a thin tube in his side. He has to go back every
three months to make sure the cancer hasn't returned. In August
he will finally become eligible for a liver transplant. He's on
Medicaid now as he cannot work - the only good thing I know of to
come out of Obamacare.
I'd like to go to the Club 40 celebration or the '62 55 year
reunion but doubt I can make it. I loved seeing everyone I last
saw at graduation again at the 50 year reunion.

I have loved having our exchange student from Spain with us since
last August. He left today [6/22/17] to return to his family
and home in Madrid. He felt he had to return for a tutoring
opportunity to catch up for his senior year and exams for college
this next year.
We will miss him greatly. Having him live with us allowed me to
relive much of my own exchange student year in 1962-1963, but we
hope to see him when we visit Spain next year and in the future.
And we wish him Godspeed and happiness for his future.

This photo was just taken at the UW where Roy's only son and my
only nephew just graduated in some form of engineering (maybe
computers and something else?). His 2 daughters Karin (graduated
from WSU in Bellingham in 2010? And just married in Bellingham
last year). Her husband is next to Kendrick (Roy's son, the
taller blond one) in the photo. Karin is next to Roy. His other
daughter, Kaitlyn just got her Master's degree this past December
in Washington DC; she is next to their mother, Megan Cross on the
left of the photo.
If Roy turns up at the class of '65 reunion this week-end, don't
tell him I submitted the photo, but it's a great family photo and
I thought people might like to see it. I'm a proud aunt of my
only nephew and nieces

Well, here I am watching grass grow while I wait to leave for the
airport. I need to learn to navigate Allegiant Airlines website
mo betta... every time I get to the airport (Vegas and Pasco)
there is always a flight leaving earlier than I am... but when
I go to the website they only give me one choice... I guess I
should start using those "help" sites like expedia etc... as
I recall however, they are always more complicated in some way
which I cannot recall at the moment. So anyway, I am stuck so
here I am... stuck in Lodi again... yesterday or the day before
no planes were landing in Las Vegas because of the runway heat so
maybe it is best that I am leaving a little later... "everything
happens for a reason"... Well, I can't wait to get to Richland...
Friday evening watching the cars is always a great time... this
year coordinating things has been a challenge. No more comment on
that till I return. It has reminded me of a time when a very dear
attorney friend (I have very few attorney "friends" but this guy
was the best) got himself in a bind... he had taken a Capital
case and somehow spent the money without doing the work... He was
a fantastic attorney and I recall so well when he was all excited
for his 50 year reunion at Vegas Hi while I was getting ready
for my 25 year. I thought he was really freaking old! Anyway,
he could have lost his ticket and other icky things for what he
did... he asked if I could help and of course Mr. fixit got into
gear... I had a guy who I had kept going after the Fire cases
settled (he was the special master for both) by using him as a
Receiver while he got his Capital practice back on its feet...
I asked him to help my friend by taking the case... I got it all
set up and the morning I was to broker the deal before the Judge,
he backed out... I mean minutes before... frantic calls on my
part got it back on track and I presented it to the Judge in a
way that only the judge would know the specifics and the
peanut gallery would just see it as a simple substitution of
attorneys... that's kinda how coordinating events for this
weekend ended up but we are good to go and have a ball!

Re: Fireworks at Umatilla (Landing Days Celebration)
Umatilla: Saturday night at 10pm near the Boat Basin just down
river from the bridge we will be firing a right tidy display. Not
Big but nice. We fire it right out over the river.
Re: Pyro Techs
I will have the help of the very capable Chuck LOLLIS ('64) and a
couple of other techs.
As soon as it is over Chuck and I will beat feet for home to
finish packing. I have invited Chuck to an all expense paid trip
to Alaska. Ok... actually we are going to Dutch Harbor to set up
and fire their J4 display. I will see to it there is time for
sight seeing and picture taking. It is still daylight at 11pm. We
fire up against a big dark mountain so the fireworks show up
quite well for the audience across the bay who are also looking
away from the sunset. They get in position early and build large
beach fires out of old wood pallets. They start them early so the
flames die into hot coals by the midnight shooting time. It is a
large display with large shells and lots of extras, and the
reflections on the water of the bay make it really special.
Chuck has become a very capable technician helping on displays in
various parts of the NW. I look forward to his help at Dutch. For
a variety of reasons that display is technically difficult.
Having someone else to work with the crew of locals will be a big
help
Re: Umatilla "Landing Days"
Alums are always asking when can they see one of my displays.
Here is your chance not far from home and a nice display. I am
told folks drive from 30 or more miles away to see it. Fireworks
displays in Eastern OR are few and far between.. The "Landing
Days" celebration is in honor of Lewis and Clark's Voyage of
Discovery that stopped there and camped and traded with the
Indians. (I read the Log Book of the voyage a couple of years
ago) I found it very interesting.
Re: Note
Anybody visiting the new Ilani Casino at MP 16 on I-5 north of
Vancouver on the 3rd of July will see a large format display of
fireworks choreographed to music. It will be the 2nd of several
displays we will be doing there. The first one was a big hit.

Last Saturday, June 17, I lost one of my best friends since the
Marcus Whitman days and the class of '71 lost one of our standout
citizens when Glenn Eklund lost a six month battle with brain
cancer. Glenn will live on through the many students he impacted
in his 30+ years as an educator. Besides his role as a teacher,
he spent many hours on his own working with "at risk" youth,
inspiring and challenging them to achieve more than they believed
possible. His legacy lives on not just in the school gym that was
dedicated to him upon his retirement, but also in the thousands
of students he impacted over the years.

Re: Surgery,
Hi Maren, several people have asked me what is going on with my
health.
I had a cervical spine fusion on Dec 22 of last year. I could
not walk and was restricted to a wheel chair. Well the surgery
and 36 days of physical therapy and I was worse than before the
operation. I am still in a wheelchair and now my hands don't
work. On Tuesday I am going in and they are going to remove the
anterior portion of three cervical vertebra and do a fusion on
three lumbar vertebra. I am hoping that this will work better
than the last one.
I will let you know how it goes.

The 2018 Volunteer Picnic was held last Saturday, June 24 (always
the last Saturday in June), This is also the day for the first
sign ups for the next race.
Sign up began at 9:30am and already 52 have signed up.
8 rookies and the rest vets including 4 champions: Buser, King,
Dallas Seavey and Mitch Seavey. Should be a good year... Buser,
King, and Dallas all have 4 wins and would love to tie Rick
Swenson as the winningest (Rick has 5 wins).
Maybe Rick Swenson will sign up this year and win... then he'll
have 6 wins for the other guys to match. We haven't seen Rick
since 2012. His first race was 1976 and he raced every year
till 20l2 with two exceptions: 1997 and he scratched in '05. He
even finished 20th in 2011 with a broken collar bone!! He's
tough... I'd sure like to see him race again.
2018 has several who are just "RIGHT tHERE" and could easily win:
Aliy Zirkle, Nic Petit, Jessie Royer, and Joar Leifseth-Ulsom.
There are three Redingtons in the mix this year. All three are
grandsons of the father of the Iditarod, Joe Redington.
The beautiful Berington twins (Anna and Kristy) are signed up for
2018.
AND... I've just GOTTA watch DeeDee Jonrowe. She's 63 and has 16
top ten finishes in three decades... she's finished 2nd twice,
4th four times, 5th three times, 7th once, 9th twice, and 10th
four times. PLUS she looks good all in pink. Even her dogs have
florescent pick coats and booties... you can see 'em coming!!
Other driver(s) have till close of business on December 1, 2017,
to sign up. The 2018 Iditarod begins (as always) on the first
Saturday in March. Next year that day is March 3.

and I ain't talkin' bout the "Lemmon" sisters... May I first say
I was shocked to hear about Tom HUGHES' ('56) trials... prayers
and love! My week-end was something else... but all good in the
end... Two hours late both ways and I missed Craig DAVIS' ('65-RIP)
celebration of life... but was able to spend some very quality
time later with Pat Davis (NAB). Got into Pasco around 10:30 or
so then wandered around trying to find the "H" rental car row...
finally got to Richland about 11:30pm... nobody answered their
phones so I took my second wind to wander down to the "benches"..
no not the group W benches... first I sat on Dick PLOWS ('63-RIP)
and hadda nice chat... then moved over to "Pook's" ('63-RIP) and
finally moved to Steve SIMPSON's ('65-RIP), after which I figured
I could crash... up at 5:30am I went to Winco for stuff for the
"watch the cars" party and made it to the Spudnut in record
time... nice visiting with a buncha Bombers started my morning
just right... around 5pm a group of 50+ converged on Cecilia
BENNETT's ('65)... now John COLE ('66), Mick HEMPHILL ('66),
Cecilia, Lamont DeJONG ('63) and I had been trying to get
Jimbeaux ('63) to the event since 6/15/17 (the earliest they were
available after traveling)... up to just before the event the
word was that he and the Ever Young and Lovely Miss Nancy ('65)
were not planning on making it to Richland... it was one quilt,
no two quilts, no one quilt... finally Lamont told me we were a
go and I relayed to Mick and John... We all gathered and Tom
MATTIS ('66) and Jim HAMILTON ('63) were honored with Quilts of
Valor quilted by Cecilia's sister... how cool is that... Mickey
made it through the reading of "the letter" without bursting in
to tears for the first time... after presenting over 90 quilts
(40 something just this year), it is finally becoming slightly
"easier" but no less moving... a photo is being sent to the photo

The rest of the weekend was a whirlwind of activity. Spuddies
with the gang... wandering the car show with Jack GARDINER ('61)
and eating only sporadically... Quality time with the ADAIR's
('67/'69)... a special gift from Chuck LOLLIS ('64), Dinner with
Tere ('65) and Terry ('65) and just a whole buncha fun, fun,
fun... I even made time to revisit the "who lived where" house
search I made with Tony HARRAH ('65) over 25 years ago... I must
say that many houses have changed and my memory is fading fast...
I learned that the Parker picture window is still in place but
the individual small pane windows my dad had done have been
replaced with ordinary windows... But as I say every year...
this was the best yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was an item on the 11 o'clock news Monday night about a
wind storm in Kennewick. Seems the wind was strong (est. 40 MPH+)
and lasted long enough to uproot what looked like a willow tree.
Judging from the background the location may have been in a park
or golf course. No sand or tumbleweeds were involved.
Which is totally outside the realm of the main reason for this
report. That reason being the acknowledgement of the birthday of
a Bomber Babe of my acquaintance. That we went to high school
together has been previously reported along with the memory lapse
of whether or not we had class(es) together. Needless to say, I
do believe I was aware of her presence.
Now I do hope her husband, Jimmie ('54), will take her to one
of the better eating establishments for a nice birthday dinner.
Anthony's springs to mind. Any where except McDonald's/Taco Bell
or Time and or Denny's.
That being said; a tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy
Birthday!" to friend and fellow classmate, Jeanette DUNCAN ('54)

Hey Maren,
You seem to have access to loads of statistics on the Iditarod.
I googled Rick Swenson and found that he was born in 1950. That
would make him 67 going on 68 in 2018. AARP Magazine posted a
March 16, 2017 article from the Associated Press (AP) online.
Mitch Seavey is the oldest, fastest winner of the Iditarod to
date.

[Col. Norman Vaughn is the oldest at 84 to complete the

Re: Monday night storm
Yes, Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) the tri-Cities was
devastated after the rip roaring thunder storm came through here
for about 3 hours on Monday, June 26th!!! Lightening struck a
huge house up on the side of the hill in Richland and burned it
totally. Roof collapsed before fireman could even get there.
Thank Heavens the family got out, but unfortunately lost a pet
snake.
A friend, Jennifer Felicitas, CEO of IMPACT Compassion Center in
Kennewick is asking for people who have chainsaws, trucks, etc.
to contact her as she is putting help together. Many had homes
flooded out, ruined furniture, without basics, fallen trees,
properties damaged from lightening/water/wind/fallen trees.
Tonight (Wednesday) she and help are going to a home on Snow in
Richland with chainsaws and volunteers to cut a tree up that has
fallen on the home after it split. Many cases like this all over
the Tri-Cities. Flooding on Gage Blvd, and in parking lots had
some people having fun racing little boats and even rode in some
boats in the street! In Finley, a wedding venue lost 150 trees!!!
They were asking for help to clear them.
People are saying this storm was the worst they have ever seen
and in some parts wind was gusting up to 68 mph. Sheets of rain,
as many of you know, came pouring down!! Temperature on our patio
went from 101° to 77° in about an hour!!!

you know of anyone who needs help, including, furniture, food,
clothing, any personal items, she is the one to get it. Google

Re: Wind storms
The talk about wind storms (of which there were many in the '50s)
by Bob Carlson, Mike CLOWES ('54), reminded me of when I worked
at the Star View Drive In, located in what is now West Richland
but then it was Heminger City. I was among the very first to work
there, which included opening night. I'm sure that some from the
era of '54 and '55 remember me kicking them out and ending up
sitting behind the fence at the foot of Flat Top. Then I'd go
back and turn the speakers off so you couldn't hear the movie,
only for you to sneak back down and turn them up when I left...
(Grin) I left to join the Air Force and came back home to visit
late '55. At one point during the visit I went to the Drive in,
and ended up in the projection room where I used to announce
Intermission i.e. "Welcome to the Star view Drive in Theater..
During our short intermission visit our snack bar, and while
there, try one of our Tasty Tasty Burgers, and don't forget
folks, every Wednesday night is Buck Night" Or something close to
that.. While talking to the projectionist he told me while I was
gone they had a big wind storm. He said he looked out the window
to get the que off the screen to switch projectors and all he saw
was the Marquee which normally would be behind the screen. The
wind unbeknownst to him had blown the screen down. The funny part
of this was, the movie for that night was "The Living Desert". As
I recall, the storm took down the screen in Kennewick too... The
first films shown at the Star View were "Lone Star" and "The
Happy Years" and the first cartoon was the Road Runner.

prayers. It really will take a miracle!"

Re: Monday's storm
About the storm on Monday night. Some areas were hit harder than
others. I live a few blocks from the Uptown shopping center. A
very large elm tree on the property behind me came down right at
ground level, taking out part of the fence between the
properties, and falling across the dumpster. That area also has
an additional parking spot for each unit. Parts of town were hit
really hard with a driving rain that the storm drains had a hard
time keeping up with.
A couple in Meadow Springs lost their house when it was hit
by a lightning bolt. At first they thought it was just thunder
overhead but when he went out to check he found the roof was
ablaze, they got out with their dogs and not much else. It no
sooner got over when my "dumb" neighbors started shooting off
fireworks.

I visited Gordon Pappas, our music director at Col-Hi from 1948-
1960. He lives in a retirement community called Stone Creek
Village, in Pleasanton CA. It is such a pleasure to reminisce
about those great years in the very fine music program that he
ran. We talked about the musical, "Good News," that he directed
in 1953. Mr. Pappas bought a follow spot to highlight the
singers, and rented a gold plush curtain from a theater supply
to add some sparkle to the old auditorium we used.
Mr. Pappas is active in his community. He is preparing a
presentation on music of the twenties.
I am very glad to be able to visit and enjoy his company. He made
a great contribution to my high school life.
