Well done, Pete. Thanks for the memories and the history
lesson. As the years move on, you're sounding more like
an old geezer-a lovable and erudite geezer, but a geezer
nonetheless. It happens to the best of us. At least we hope
it does.
The old whistles I recall were made by carefully removing he
bark from a suitable length of a branch, carving a groove in
the stick, and then replacing the bark to provide a hollow
channel. But I'm sure the truly talented found a more elegant
way that shall remain secret to this day.

Well whether it is today or tomorrow, this guy and I had
some great times together during our years at Col-Hi (Bomber
Calendar says tomorry... face book says today)... Been
trying to figure how we hooked up, but ya know I just can't
recall... most kids I remember right about the time I met
them but all I remember is runnin' together all through the
two years we spent together in High School... only two cuz he
was a year older than I and judging where his house was on
GWWay, he would a gone to the other Jr. High... I can never
recall the name... these days I try and figure out which
house was his but the driveways all look different than I
remember them... ah ha... 209 was the address according to my
trusty lil' Richland phone book... do you know they actually
had dialing instructions in the front of the phone book...
instructions for a dial phone... dang! Anyway, HAPPY

Funny... today, ten years makes little difference at all in
ages... I mean common... 70 or 80... ya all hurt like hell
and talk about stuff we swore we'd never talk about... I mean
some of us may have been dumb enuff to say: "Shoot me if I do
that... "today I called a friend while he was waiting inna
Doc's office and he was talking about blood pressure... the
only blood pressure we worried about back inna day was...
uh... hmmmmmmm... nevermind... anyway so here we are with
the same or similar aches and pains and it's the topic of
conversation... today driving to the store I was wishing only
the worst things happen to the NVA who shot off that 122
back in '68... some days are like that... then there's the
hands... can't blame no Vietnamese for that... it's just
parta life... but then there are those we lost way too
soon... On the Spalding playground, he was a "big kid"...
in HS he was closer in age and things weren't quite so cut
and dried but still, I hadn't been invited to eat at the big
kids' table yet... His older brother ('61) and I talk as if
we are no more than a couple a days apart in age now... So
believe it or not it has been 30 years since we lost "the
walk"... We all miss you, Chuck GARDINER ('63-RIP)!!!!!!!!!!!

With the very capable help of Chuck LOLLIS ('64) and help
from several City employees we fired what is now said to be
the best ever display at midnight New Years Eve.
The picture attached was of a 10 inch shell and was taken at
approximately 1 mile across the harbor.

Geez I just realized that song works for me as well as this
post... When I was seventeen... these kids wuz seniors and I
was a lowly "lower" classman... yeah I know it don't rhyme
but it works... Now one of these Bombers, the babe, makes me
swoon at the mention of her name... She is one of my very
favorite... oh wait I've said that before... I need a new
line... "Hi... what's yer sign?"... uhhhhhhhhhh... hey do you
come here often?... eyeeew as ML ('63) would say... "Hey..."
no I can't say that one... I used to say it to her alla time
and she never once fell for it... I'm sure she recalls and if
not... thank goodness... Now the guy I knew but not as well
as I now wish I had... unfortunately we don't get do-overs in
real life... he and I became great pals on face book and he
was taken from us and from his dear and loving wife ('64) far
too soon. I won't forget the times we shared even if they

in The driveway feeding some quail (s) and a buncha other
nondescript mongrel sparrowish kind of birds handful at a

at Yokes when I ohshitslippedon ICE and hit the concrete so
fast and in one singlesoundless Whomp that none of the birds
even flew up outta there in startled flutter the way birds
normally do in events like that and not even when I crawled
off across the lawnsnow up to m'porch and used my Samsung
Galaxy to call my neighbor Craig for help. All evening in the
ER and then home here on my red couch with a bucket for
number 1 and a walker to hobblebob me across the living room
rug to the bathroom for number 2 And don't ask me for how
long owing to Conflicting theories except to say I'm hurt and
hurt bad And that Imma cripple now And there's a half bag of
black sunflower seeds out there on the ice in my driveway.

Ah, life after the holydays. The decorations are being put
away; the tree is down and life continues.
First, my condolences to a "junior" member of this hearty
band. He found out the hard way that it is not wise to feed
birds on frozen driveways. I do hope that he has found some
form of medical assistance concerning his injuries. Just
remember, Terry ('65), that if they have to do joint
replacement; the grease "zerks" are placed where one can get
at them and won't snag on clothing or skin. Perhaps The
Tooter ('65) is flying to your rescue as we speak.
Now for the important part. You guessed it. There is a Bomber
of my generation celebrating a birthday today. Kinda think he
may have been out of the running for 1st Baby of the Year
honors way back then. And, probably, didn't even make the
front page. He should have.
So, a tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!"
to fellow classmate Roger McCLELLAN ('54). Just don't try to
paint the "Duke" city red in celebration.

David Rivers' stream-of-consciousness narrative of January 3
took me back 49 years, and left me standing in the bathroom
yesterday morning, looking at myself weeping in the mirror as
his mention of the NVA (North Vietnamese Army) and 122 rocket
came home. The piece of the 122 that wounded me in February,
1969 was jagged and ugly, etched with Cyrillic characters,
and torn into shrapnel by the rocket's explosive charge. The
metal fragment arrived along with the roar of an explosion,
through the front of my plywood hut, high enough to clear the
blast wall outside, and ricocheted off interior walls.
Outside my hut (hootch in Vietnam), dozens of men were
wounded by the rocket and mortar rounds that caught guys in
the open, headed to the mess hall at 7:00 AM. As the medic,
my job started as soon as I emerged from the protective
bunker I dived into after being lightly wounded. The walking
wounded found me, and thereby triaged themselves into those
who did not need immediate attention. Who needed immediate
attention was Philips, the occupant of the hootch 30 feet
from mine that took a direct hit from the 122. It detonated
about 8 feet above Philips, a night-duty sentry, who was
lying in his bunk. He had many shrapnel wounds.
Philips was alive, but only for a little while would he last
without doctors and a hospital. He was very badly wounded,
losing blood and in terrible pain. The scene was surreal, a
hut torn in two and a man splattered with red and white
blobs. A can of shaving cream had also taken a hit.
Men began carrying the non-walking wounded toward my hootch,
and there were about 10 in addition to Philips who would
need hospital care. An E-7 (long-time enlisted man/sergeant,
and a good one) asked me if we needed a dustoff, an air
ambulance, and I said yes. He sprinted around the back of my
hootch to the commo shack to radio for help, and when he
returned, told me our commanding officer, a captain, had
denied the helicopter ambulance request.
We commandeered a truck, and loaded it with the litters
carrying the worst off and started toward the 91st Evac
Hospital in Chu Lai, a 30 minute drive. The back of the
truck was strangely silent. Philips drifted in and out of
consciousness as I tried to stop his bleeding from the many
wounds. His breathing was shallow, and pulse light and
erratic. He was slipping away as shock set in.
At the 91st, we turned the truck's occupants over to the
ER staff, some of whom were familiar from my stint there
unloading wounded from helicopters, and returned to our
compound. I picked bits of shrapnel from some guys for a
couple of weeks, as the small surface wounds festered.
The captain, a West Point man, unceremoniously disappeared in
4 or 5 days, replaced by a "mustang," an up-through-the-ranks
officer. Philips lasted long enough to be sent to Japan, on
his way home. I assume he lived. The First Sergeant thanked
me. Army Engineers arrived and removed the remnant hootch. A
week later, my fiancé sent me a Dear Joe letter. Late
February still makes me blue.

All I can say is thank God for the e-4 medics. They show up
before the dust settles.
I spent a few painful hours at the Chu Lai 91st ER, just as
they were receiving in-coming mortars. Then off to DeNang
landing, just as they were receiving incoming 122 rockets,
three stops before daylight.
Thanks again for the combats medics, always at the right
place and time.

Many of you may already know, but currently I am waiting for
Marsha to come out of surgery for the resection of a 4x4.1 cm
cancerous mass/tumor in her right temporal lobe. We found out
on Wednesday, 1/3 after she had a CT scan of her head done
after a fall on December 18th. Although she saw her primary
doctor, who didn't find anything wrong at the time, recent
changes in her speech, reasoning and gait made it apparent
something wasn't right.
The CT scan she had last Wednesday indicated the possibility
of a large mass and they had us go to the ER Department at
Kadlec immediately. After a two hour wait for a bed to become
available she was seen in the ER Department. An MRI was done
and showed the mass which was pushing towards the brain stem
which was approximately one mm away. It was determined by a
neurosurgeon that surgery was indicated asap. As I am
waiting, Marsha has been in surgery over four hours and her
doctor had said it could take as long as eight hours. She
will be in ICU for at least three days and possibly longer
depending what is found in the surgery. From there she will
be transferred to the surgical floor for several days and
then an undetermined number of days in Kadlec's Rehab Center
learning her motor skills which may have been affected by the
tumor and mass in the brain. At this time the time frame for
almost all of her recovery is still not known.
She has asked me to let everyone know that at the present
time she prefers to have NO VISITORS because of the very
difficult situation she is going through. We appreciate
everyone's understanding. Those on Facebook who already know
a lot about her illness and have sent your prayers and well
wishes; thank you from both of us. It has truly meant the
world to us and been immensely helpful and uplifting for
Marsha. I will be updating her condition here in the
Sandstorm and also on Facebook. Continued prayers are
definitely welcomed for her speedy and complete recovery.
Sorry this is so long, but it is my intention to let those of
you who know and remember Marsha be told of her struggles she
is currently facing.
11:23pm 1/5/18 UPDATE:
Marsha is out of surgery after almost five hours. All went
well and a full recovery looks promising. Thank you all for
your support!

I need to thank you for recounting your memories February,
1967. You were probably all of 22 years old. That much gritty
reality, pain, loss, senseless madness - actually I don't
know what words to use. All that (and more, no doubt) packed
into one short month, experienced by one young man.
Then my mind tries to multiply all that by the thousands/
millions of "man (& woman) months" during that war... and I
just sort of shutdown. Overwhelmed. And I wasn't even there.
I know I don't really have a clue. But your narrative at
least gave me an intense & moving glimpse. So, again, I need
to thank you. For the writing. For so much more - clearly.
War has stolen innocence & youth from countless millions,
many of them Richland Bombers. To all of you to whom that
happened, or who have a loved one to whom that happened - you
are in my prayers this morning.

Today (1/6/18) is day #1 post-op and it has been a fantastic
day!! Marsha is doing remarkably well being only a little
over 24 hours from having major brain surgery to remove a
mass from her right frontal lobe. This tumor was discovered
after seeing her primary physician after a fall at home just
before Christmas.
At first all seemed ok; no concussion or apparent injuries
except for minor headaches and sore neck and shoulder aches
and pains. However when things didn't improve her doctor
ordered a CT Scan of her head, STAT. That was done this past
Wednesday afternoon and a mass was discovered. An MRI was
performed at Kadlec late that same evening. It was determined
the presence of unknown mass in the area of her right temple.
She was admitted to the hospital early AM on Thursday. It
was indicated to us by the neurosurgeon on duty that after
reading the CT & MRI reports surgery was indicated as soon
as they were able to schedule it. It was done on Friday,
starting at 3:30. The surgeon explained to us prior to the
beginning, it could take 4-8 hours depending what they found.
That's how it all came to be and I am pleased that today she
is doing great. Much better than all expectations. All the
doctors, therapists and nurses seem to be almost amazed at
how well my little fighter has done in such a short time.
Originally she was to be in ICU for at least three days
before moving back down to the acute care/Oncology floor.
Now the move may take place as early as tomorrow she is doing
so well. She does have some head pain (on the infamous 1-10
pain scale) and they are keeping her mildly sedated and
comfortable.
I have become quite proficient in my nursing duties while
spending my days (and yes nights on those comfortable couches
they have here) I do take a break every day and go home to
shower and get fresh clothes, plus make sure our two cats Koa
and Mac are ok and taken care of in the food and box cleaning
department!!
Thank you one and all for everything you all have written and
the prayers sent our way. I can't begin to tell you how much
it means and how much it is appreciated.
Again, sorry for the length of this epic tale, but I have
received several texts and Facebook messages asking what
happened. I will attempt to keep Y'all (as they say in LA
(sorry Maren, couldn't resist) shorter with future "Marsha
Updates"!

Ahhh the memories of the '66 girls and the '65 boyz... today
we gots one a them babes havin' another birthday... these
birthdays keep coming and thank goodness for that... One of
my favorite memories of this girl isn't from the old dayz but
from a reunion... now we all recall that if we were referring
to a woman... especially an "older" woman, we most often
referred to her as a "lady"... we were standing in line
waiting for our name tags and packets and the b-day Bomber-
babe nudged me and asked: "who's that LADY?" referring to an
unknown woman with one of the Bomber-guys... it hit me so
funny as we were beyond the age of referring to women in that
fashion, at last that's the way it hit me... I burst out
laughing and said I didn't know but I was pretty sure that

since 2nd grade and he has barely changed in looks over the
years at all... still looks like the little league picture of

Here's the link to view the first 4 episodes of 6 total
episodes of the TV series on the Richland Bombers football
team's 2017 state championship season that is currently being
shown on SWX channel 786 in the Tri-Cities. (Only the first
two episodes have aired so far). Those who aren't local
and/or don't have cable TV can view these through this Link.
Each episode is about 50 minutes.
This is an awesome series and covers lots more than just
football! The friendships and relationships these players
have formed, the mushroom cloud mascot/logo debate,
basketball state championships, the Richland "atomic city"
community pride, game by game action, etc.
I was informed that there is likely to be a DVD of all six
episodes of the "Fear None" series, as well as the tv showing
of the entire state championship game made available for sale
in the coming months.

Marsha GOSLIN Brehm ('65) Update:
Most of you probably already know that Marsha went through
brain surgery last Friday after doctors discovered a large
mass when she had a CT scan after a fall.
When she had surgery the doctors had said she would most
likely be in ICU for at least three days, then Intermediate
Care for several days and then some rehab for relearning
things that she possibly "lost" during surgery. This morning
her surgeon came in the hospital room and surprised us both
by asking if she would like to go home today. Although she
really feels rough (her words) right now, she will recover.
It will be several days before we get the Pathology results
and Marsha needs to take it easy and mend. She isn't really
up to company or phone calls at this time.
Thank you all for your understanding and support in this very
stressful time. And all your prayers.

So, I've been fighting a leak in my wood/stucco patio cover
for a few years. Initially I was able to put rubber sealant
where it was leaking and it worked for a couple of years...
since them I have been up there over and over trying to
figure it out. I am realizing that I cannot give in and admit
I'm whipped. It is a character defect I am afraid I have
never admitted to myself let alone all you guys. I hope I can
get someone out here who knows what they are doing. I have

Brother Tom's ('53-RIP) long time partner in life, died,
January 7th... at 9:20 pm... 2 days before the anniversary of
Tom's death on the 9th, 5 years ago... she died of not being
able to get enough air, having just one lung due to many,
many years of smoking, probably... she and Tom are survived
by 4 children, and a slew of G'gids and Great G'kids... so
the beat goes on... since Tom died, Darlene kind of became a
recluse, but she was greatly taken care of by her daughter
Kathy, and, of course the rest of the immediate family... at
this time, no plans have been made for a memorial, but when
and if there are plans, I will let the Sandstorm know... now
that Darlene has been released from the toils of old age and
modern medicine, may she rest in peace...

Re: Marsha's progress
Although I graduated from Kennewick, I have to admit I
married one tough little Bomber gal 25 years ago!! Marsha is
slowly improving at home and because she can't be left alone
yet, she went to the grocery store with me this morning.
Having brain surgery on Friday and going home on Monday still
amazes me to no end. Doctor has ordered plenty of rest and
light activity, but especially with the flu problems right
now she doesn't want visitors. We've had four people die from
flu in our area and the hospital was full of patients with
it. We're keeping our fingers crossed and very glad we got
our flu shot in September.
I will do my best to keep you all who know Marsha updated. We
are still waiting to hear on the Pathology. Please think of
her and you prayers are still greatly appreciated!!

Many years ago, here in Richland, Dr. Fewel did his thing
on my head, took out a small portion of my skull and took
out a golf ball, really, (wait for this) it was really a
meningioma. He got I believe all of it and put the piece back
in with clips and screws, and I told him when I went back in
2 weeks that there was a lose screw. I put his finger on it
and told him to move it back and forth, which he did. He did
say that it would be OK. Well I go back in on the 8th of Feb.
for another back surgery, this will be my second with him.
He really knows his stuff, total of 3 surgeries. By the way,
after the first head surgery I took a walk the second day in
the hospital, around ICU. Any thought I'd give my account of
my fun trip. Think I went home an the third day.

I'll betcha most of you remember your first bike. Mine was
a 24" skinny tire one speed. I rode that thing everywhere...
riding bikes was just the way it was... no... nobody had
those little teeny bikes that near grown-ups rode a few years
back... in our day we only rode a bike till we could drive...
today for me and for most of the people I know... bicycles
are "wall-art" or hanging from the ceiling in the garage...
man they look like a great idea till the first or second
ride... now one of today's Bombers doesn't use a bike just
once in a while... it is transportation... much like Joe B.
FORD ('63)... Now the other Bomber is one whose last name is
becoming a family word in Richland... I recall when they
moved to Richland and his older brother ('65) became one of
my gang within minutes of arrival... Now I may be wrong...
but I recall them living on one of those houses like
Trujillos' ('65) on Marshall (?) but I recall them occupying

My condolences to the McKeown family on the loss of their
mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Just be rest
assured that Darlene CARD McKeown ('54-RIP) is somewhere
with her beloved "Farley" ('53).
On a brighter note, today is the birthday of a fellow
classmate. He's lucky that it fell on a Saturday this year.
Can't remember when first we met, probably at Carmichael
(then the only Junior High in town). But certainly in the
hallowed halls of Col-Hi. See him on a sort of annual
gathering during the Club 40 Annual Meeting. He doesn't
seemed to have changed much.
A tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!"
to Bill WENDLAND ('54). Make the most of it.

Re: Death of Gordon Pappas Nov. 19, 2017
Gordon Pappas was a fine musician and a great teacher who
taught band at Col-Hi from 1948 to 1960. He brought quality
music to our school. In 1953 he staged the musical, "Good
News," set at mythical Tait College in 1928. It included
the memorable song, "The Best Things In Life Are Free." Our
school superintendent at the time objected to the scenes that
included drinking and smoking.
In order to add a "big-time" touch to the performance, Mr.
Pappas rented a gold plush curtain to adda little class to
our drab auditorium. He also purchased with his own funds a
follow spot to highlight the singers.
I did props for the show, and really enjoyed being a part of
it.
The most memorable thing he brought was the fine trumpeter,
Rafael Mendez for a concert in April 1954. Mr. Mendez spent
a week rehearsing with the band. He was a very fine musician,
but he was mostly remembered by us in the band as an elegant
man with great patience in his instruction. Everyone in the
band enjoyed this wonderful man.
I had the pleasure of getting reacquainted with Gordon,
visiting him in castro Valley, and later in Pleasanton, CA.
His wife Ruby died in 2011 after sixty-three years of
marriage.
We have lost a fine teacher who added much to our lives.

Kids learn how to calculate the amount of dog food each dog
will need and how much total food to send to each check
point. HINT: about 20 check points. Different distances
between check points
Teams leave the starting line every two minutes. At the
completion of their mandatory 24 hour rest, the time
difference between first and last to start the race is
calculated. EXAMPLE: If you left LAST from the starting
point, you may depart at exactly 24 hours from your mandatory
check point. However, if you departed second to last, you
depart the check point in 24 hours and two minutes. GREAT
math learning tool for kida.

Last Saturday I received the football shirt I had ordered
depicting the undefeated season and state championship for
our mighty Bombers. It's really cool and I'm glad to add it
to my collection of memorable teams that include Ohio State's
championship in 2014 and the Seahawks' Super Bowl win among
others. My only issue was the airplane outline on the right
sleeve.
I had thought to take it and have a red X put across the
plane, but instead I just took a black (color of the shirt)
permanent marker and colored out the plane. It has worked and
stays on after washing.
I know that all of the sports teams put the airplane outline
on their gear, but I don't like it. My grandson, Cameron
JENKINS ('16) and granddaughter, Sydney JENKINS ('19), think
I'm over reacting, as they both proudly played and play with
the plane on their gear. I doesn't matter much to them. (I
know it's a generation thing.)
I don't mean to bring up the bomb vs. airplane discourse
again, I'm just making an observation and my take on it. I
think the R Cloud is fine without either depiction and I'd
like to see that as the only symbol used.

For several years, Terry DAVIS ('65) had urged me to put my
Sandstorm posts in booklet form and "self-publish"... I think
the cost would far exceed any $ from purchases, but as Chuck
LOLLIS ('64) has dutifully sent my posts to me every single
month for such a project I think I certainly owe it to him at
least to give it a try... However, if there is no interest, I

My biggest concern is that it will contain real names. Some
of you may not mind your name in a post... but a "book" may
be a different story. I will remove one girl's name since an
ex-husband complained and called me a lair... to the best of
my knowledge all stories are true or close to true... Now
that girl's best friend Joann BUSHNELL ('65) would readily
confirm our (the un-named girl and mine) antics, but why mess
with an idiot... so... if there is really no interest I will
give up rat here n now... I gave writing a book about growing
up in Richland the ol' Bomber try, but as I have always
maintained, I am a bear of far too little brain for that much
of an undertaking. You will not hurt my feelings if you think
it is a stupid idea. (well of course I will bury my head in

Thank you, Karl Bucholz, aka Shyrl BUCHOLTZ ('54).
for posting the notice of the passing of our great teacher,
Gordon Pappas. He and his wife Ruby were the model of
devotion to their craft, their art and the profession of
teaching. I can add some to your thoughtful narrative, which
I was not to learn until many years after our time at Col-Hi.
Gordon was not only as good as they come as a teacher, he was
a model of modesty and rectitude. I visited him and Ruby in
Castro Valley, California long after they'd left Richland.
Earlier (1962) I'd gone to see them in Richland while
visiting my folks following my discharge from the U.S.
Army. I was on my way to taking up a position in the NY
Philharmonic. Gordon asked me to give his regards to a friend
from his army days. Paige Brook, Associate First Flutist
there, a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, had been
commissioned a Warrant Officer and was the leader of the
Seventh Armored Division Band, at 75 musicians, the largest
in the European theater in the waning years of WWII. Paige
had made Gordon, a member of the trumpet section, his First
Sergeant. These guys were all in their early 20s. Of course
they'd learned how to drill, in Paige's case while a member
of the National Guard before the outbreak of war. (He was
later to regale me with hilarious stories of weekend training
sessions of a tubist's horse running wild from panic at the
pounding of drums and the big brass contraption in which its
pitifully helpless player had enveloped himself.)
Gordon merely asked me to give Paige his regards - nothing
more was said of their relationship until many years later at
the breakfast table of Ruby and Gordon in Castro Valley, to
which I shall return momentarily. First I must relate Paige's
reaction to my locating him at my first service of the
orchestra, which at that time had a Summer gig in Lewisohln
Stadium in NYC. I asked around for him, and upon having him
pointed out to me, approached him to pass along Gordon's
greeting. "Are you Mr. Brooks," I enquired. "Brook!" he
barked. "No 's'". "Excuse the error, Mr. Brook. I have
regards for you from Gordon Pappas." "Gordon Pappas?!?
How do you know Gordon Pappas?" "He was my high school band
director," I replied. "Oh my god," said Paige. "I can't be
that old, can I?" My age at the time was 25. Paige became my
best friend in the orchestra during my seven years there, and
asked me to be the best man at his second wedding - a couple
with whom I was life-long friends. (I produced a recording of
his great artistry in 1969 which is in the NY Philomusica
Records Catalog, CD No 2 - French and German Masterpieces for
Flute. He is also on many other of its recordings, sprinkled
throughout the catalog.)
Fast forward to Ruby and Gordon's breakfast table in Castro
Valley many years later. Gordon opened the subject with a
casual remark, "I had a life-changing series of events when
Paige and I served in the Seventh Armored Division after the
Normandy landings. The Germans were on the run but still
resisting mightily. The band followed the armor as it went
about its business, with little more to do than pitch camp,
break camp and move on, day by day, until one day the combat
troops came back our way with 300 prisoners and ordered us to
guard them until relieved. Here are two youths who'd thought
they'd be tooting their way across Europe, suddenly charged
with having to soldier with no provisions of any kind. "As
dusk descended on us, Paige and I conferred on how to handle
our situation. One of us would have to seek assistance
wherever it could be found by our fellow soldiers more
qualified for the assignment than we. He agreed he should
stay with the band, so I hopped in the company car and headed
down the road around the first curve and out of sight, my
last glimpse of Paige in my rearview mirror. Within minutes I
was halted by a German officer, his weapon aimed right at me.
I was sure it was my last moment alive. Instead of shooting
me, he imprisoned me with two New Zealanders he'd already
captured. We became his slaves, exchanging our hope for life
with his wish to get his contraband to safety out of the war
zone, there being no gasoline for motorized transport. For
the next few months I was bedding down in haystacks and
abandoned buildings, surviving the destruction of Wurzburg
by American Artillery when its German commander refused
to surrender. Nonetheless, it fell and I was liberated,
returning to the U. S. one year ahead of the rest of the
band. I heard from some of my former bandsmen that they were
mighty perturbed by my early release. Who can blame them?
Postscript to that experience, the officer in question looked
me up in the U.S. long after the events to say 'Hello'. He
exhibited no embarrassment. Just another strange twist in
life's path, I guess."
You know, Shryl, why the Col-Hi Band was so darned good at
parading whenever it had the opportunity. I hasten to add a
call-out to Gordon's colleague and friend, the Carmichael
Junior High Music Director, Cynthia Huckstep, not a military
vet, but a superb teacher of music, discipline and marching
too. She fostered music in those schools, and Gordon knew
just what to do to further it when we all got into his orbit.
We were certainly among the most fortunate of people to have
such guidance at such a critical stage of our development,
which you have been citing in your Sandstorm posts for some
time now. Thank you very much for documenting the many
kindnesses and influence of our superb education in the
Richland School System during those years.

My memories of Mr. & Mrs. Pappas were equally impressive,
but based in a completely different reality. Their daughter,
Nikki, was in my class. I did not know her well in later
years in school. But I remember her from Lewis & Clark, &
Brownie Scout days. Her parents were gracious to all of us
little girls during all kinds of school related & Brownie
related functions. Very nice & innately gracious & "classy"
people - that is my childhood recollection of them. And such
an exotic last name to my little ears!

Re: Day's Pay Story

Unlike you, I can't recall a time when I didn't know the
story of the plane "Day's Pay". We were a very blue collar
family. So it meant a great deal to & was a great sacrifice
for my parents to have made the decision to participate in
that war effort.
Although Day's Pay was built years before I was born, my
Daddy told me the story from when I was a toddler - many
times. It was a favorite of mine. For him it was the one
source of pride that he could actually talk about in terms
of the war effort. Everything else he did, of course, was
classified.
However, in spite of my honoring that selfless act of giving
on the part of so many, I agree the plane does NOT belong on
our Bomber t-shirts, etc.
Speaking of which, is there a place I can order a Bomber
T-shirt & sweatshirt without the plane?

Re: Marsha GOSLIN Brehm ('65) Update
This is very difficult to write at this time, but I wanted
to let all of you Bombers know about Marsha's diagnosis when
we saw her surgeon today for her two week checkup after her
brain surgery.
Her Pathology report came back as stage 4, Glioblastoma, an
aggressive form of cancer. Of course this was hard for both
of us to hear, but Marsha being the fighter she is took it
much better than I would ever think. She's a very positive
person and she remains so even with this diagnosis. She will
begin radiation and chemo treatments next week at the Tri-
Cities cancer Center, the same facility I went to for nine
weeks of radiation treatments last summer. We are truly
blessed to have this wonderful treatment center in our
community.
Thank you all for your support and prayers you sent
throughout her surgery and hospitalization. We both are
truly grateful. We appreciate your continued prayers as
Marsha faces this journey. Thank you from both of us.

CHECKPOINTS: There are over 20 checkpoints along the trail
where mushers must sign in and where each musher's 2,500
pounds of dog food has been distributed. A veterinarian is
stationed at each checkpoint to provide care to the dogs.
There are currently 26 checkpoints on the northern (odd
years) route and 27 on the southern (even years) route where
mushers must sign in. Some mushers prefer to camp on the
trail and immediately press on, but others stay and rest.
Mushers prepare "drop bags" of supplies which are flown ahead
to each checkpoint by the Iditarod Air Force. The gear
includes food for the musher and the dogs, extra booties for
the dogs, headlamps for night travel, batteries (for the
lamps, music, or radios), tools and sled parts for repairs,
and even lightweight sleds for the final dash to Nome.
There are three mandatory rests that each team must take
during the Iditarod: one 24-hour layover, to be taken at any
checkpoint; one eight-hour layover, taken at any checkpoint
on the Yukon River; and an eight-hour stop at White Mountain.

Gordon Pappas was in a couple of recent entries so thought I
would add my own.
In my opinion he was our best orchestra and band instructor
we could have ever hoped for and learned so much from him.
He will be missed. Thanks to Karl Bucholz, aka Shyrl BUCHOLTZ
('54) and Bob JOHNSON ('54) for bringing us up to date.
My highlight of those days was the Mendez concert, and a few
years ago I learned about the existence of a tape from Diane
AVEDOVECH ('56) and Tony DURAN ('55) of the concert and got
the tape and copy of the program. Though Gordon passed away
recently and Raphael passed away some 30 plus years ago the
memories live on, and it will always be something special for
me. It seems like just yesterday as opposed to 63 years ago.
All participants in the Mendez concert gave of themselves to
make one good sound. There was an innocence in the music and
how it all came together.
I also recollect how Mr. Pappas got some of us to volunteer
to help him dig out his basement in Richland. Those of us who
did were happy to donate our labor and we all got to know him
a bit better.

So we don't have a non-issue.
I just came inside after cleaning the birdbaths and on ground
water dish (all heated) and refilling them. I also filled the
squirrel's peanut feeder and the sunflower feeder that is for
the birds, but mostly visited by the squirrels. My hands are
red and feel frozen right now, so I put on a teakettle to fix
a mug of tea. It feels like a good day for a bowl of chili,
too.
When I got up this Saturday, morning the temperature read 36º
and the sun was coming up turning the sky pink. Now the
clouds have moved in, the breeze is rising and it feels
really cold despite the temp reading 47º! But, since my
grandson, Cameron JENKINS ('16) is in Jamestown, ND and
experiencing far colder temps with snow on the ground I won't
complain.
I was able to sprinkle the Epsom salts around my rosebushes
yesterday as is my usual procedure. I'll give them the
dormant spray after the rain is done this week. I have
primroses blooming in the yard and I noticed some bulbs
poking through the bark mulch. So much better than our snow
covered ground last year at this time. I'll take green grass
over the white stuff in any January!

When I would move from one neighborhood to another, I made
it a point to scope it all out and kinda learn where kids
lived... I became familiar with the railroad tracks and the
canals when I moved from Jefferson to Spalding. Before that
my range of investigation was pretty much bounded by Hanes
(and whatever it was called after the curve The fire station
(great place to trick or treat), the Uptown and the houses in
between... My territory increased as I got older... I became
aware of the Richland Village and having to traverse Sherwood
Forest to get there... However, I was completely ignorant to
all the houses east of GWWay. It would be years before I
would realize so many homes that didn't look like any of mine
were over there... Eventually, I became aware that people
were building/buying brand new homes on the River... woo hoo
swimming pools and the whole 9 yards. There was a vacant lot
between VanGiesen, Stevens and the street that ran behind
Richland Lutheran Church (I take note of the name every time
I am home and immediately forget it [Maybe Kimball?}). Joe
CASTLEBERRY ('63) would move there and the HAMMERS ('65-'66)
and Terry KRUGEL ('65) would live on the Chief Jo side... so
I often wonder how in the world could I possibly be so danged
ignorant of all those other "developments"? I still don't
know the names of them and when people mention them I pretend
to have a clue what they are referring to... someday maybe I
will become more aware of my surroundings... riiiiiiiiight...
well at least I know that I have a very special Bomber-babe's

A huge Thank you to Curt DONAHUE ('53) for alerting me to
his devotional book "A daily Devotional for the Layman"...
it arrived today (yesterday) and it goes with my other 5
devotionals (AA related) I read every morning without fail.
I am so proud of our literary Bombers and the wonderful works
they have published. I have read several and will begin
reading Curt's this morning (which isn't here yet as I
write... )... today's Bomber has the distinction of having
his Pop share the residence of Kippy's ('62) Pop, "Brink"
(NAB-RIP). So many Bomber parents keep in touch and I find
that very refreshing. Think about it, all of those strangers
coming together for a common goal of which they were totally
unaware until the historic newspaper article announcing the
Project they had worked on so diligently. All of those days
leaving lead lined cans out on the front porch to be picked
up and inspected (eeeeyeeeew as ML ('63) might say) come to
fruition and success. No this is not a political post it is

Fellow Bombers, I am moving back home!
I hope to be back there by mid-May. Really want to buy a
small place, with a yard. (I'm a dog & gardening person).
But if I can't find a place to buy right away, I will need
a rental. Needs to be fenced.
I'm a non-smoker with a gentle, laid back, lazy 100 pound
dog, and a 10 pound dog. Neither are destructive.
I don't want to buy in a mobile home park, because of dog
restrictions & no real yard. However, I have no objections to
a manufactured home per se.
Would also strongly consider land with water & electricity
(no septic required) on which I could park a tiny house.
So - get creative, friends. Please feel free to contact me
with any thoughts or ideas you might have!

the '53 Columbian, and still didn't trigger anything.

I HATE sharing sad news. The youngest of the six of us
"Franco kids" passed away this past Sunday in Denver. She had
endured cancer for about six years. Her time had come but it
was incredibly painful. Her passing also brought back endless
memories.
Martha Franco went to Jefferson and Hanford.
Martha was born in 1962 when I was 10, sister Barbara 13,
Marc 14. Janet 7 and Ellen barely 1. I used to remember our
house as a circus, but I think most circuses were under much
more control than our bunch!
Looking back: We lived at 1909 Davison, corner of Davison and
Willis. Meekers were next door, Turpings next door to them,
Felts and Ned Smith and the Barrs close by on Willis.
Cartmells, Bixlers, Van Wykes a couple blocks away, the Roe
girls right up the street. Waggoners, Armstrongs all close
by. It was a typical Richland neighborhood. Everyone knew
everyone and TONS of kids everywhere.
Martha received a lot of attention as a baby and toddler. She
had the very best of what all of us experienced as Richland
kids. She had Kathie and Carolyn ROE as her prime baby
sitters. Trisha Meeker next door was like a seventh kid for
us.
A few years later I used to walk Martha and Ellen (one year
older) over to Fran Rish's house on McMurray (a block away)
for swimming lessons in the summer. That Rish was pretty
different from the one we all got to know in high school! The
memories are endless and I think very similar to those we all
have.
Martha was not a Bomber but I wanted to share with our many
friends. I hope some of you or your family members might
remember Martha and those very early Richland days for all of
us.

Two Bomber-babes n a Bomber celebratin' today... but first
(you know there is always a but first)... remember back inna
day when you needed to see the Doc? Now I spoze our parents
took care of makin' the 'pointments and all (or maybe I have
just misplaced the memory of doing it)... now there may have
been a waiting period in their minds but for me it was just
here we go to the Doc. Put us on the scale (One of which I
have in my bedroom thanks to John CORRADO ('64) and his dear
wife, Janine RIGHTMIRE ('65). John was kind enough to make
his Dad's scale a present for my 60th b-day a week or so
ago... well, "the other day" anyway)... the thermometer and
maybe a shot or two and that was that... not so today... Now
my Doc finally after MUCH pressure from some Big Dogs n me
talked him into selling his practice (he was working 7 days a
week and losing at 2 Million smackers every year... he's our
age and looked a hundred or so... and becoming a Concierge
Doc, which means we pay him every year and then he gets what
he can from insurance... Now insurance companies hate guys
like him... they can't bully them ahhhh but the Insurers get
even by requiring us to get a referral from one of their Docs
to go to a specialist... so everytime I wanna see some Doc
I've seen 1000 times before I gotta get a referral... now the
"primary care" guy happens to be the son of a former client
so he's been pretty cool about the whole silly thing... but
it does require me to make an extra visit for a piece of
paper... not Zackery like the olden dayz... Oh and thank
goodness... for several dayz I have been trying like
crazy to remember what is important about January 27th...
I REMEMBERED... I have a DMV appointment the day before!
Whewwww glad I membered!... gee now where wuz I... oh yeah...

passing, and I wanted right away to send along my condolences
for that happy and highly energetic little girl I used to see
(and hear) playing out in front of your house with the other
two younger Francos whenever Susan and I would take a walk
through the neighborhood in the evenings.
I'm sorry, Mike. I know how close-knit your family is.
Your good father, Dr. Franco, somehow managed to keep my dad
alive those two long months after his surgery, back when I
was a junior in high school. I'm grateful, still, for the
kindness in his eyes when he came walking down the hallway
that night to where my mother and I were sitting and told us
we would have my dad for a bit longer yet. I wish I could
repay some measure of that kindness with these words.

While early reports that any celebratory lighting of the
Birthday Girl's candles had been cancelled, due to a total
lack of interest, indifference and/or ambivalence, on
everyone's part. This might be only slightly overstated, and
I feel compelled to step in and wave the flag. It's more like
a white flag as she's bombarded me with daily texts and
e-mails announcing the number of remaining days since last
February. It was February 19th, to be exact, the birthday of
Copernicus. This is the one and the same Copernicus who
theorized that the sun was the center of the universe. The
Birthday Girl has always felt that this was no more than
hasty thinking and lets us all know that she is and always
will the center of our universe.
John Prine penned a song, "I guess they oughta name a drink
after you", and Lord knows I've searched for an appropriate
candidate. After all due diligence, the best I could find is
a beer named after her. Kinda.

Regardless, Happy Birthday to Mary Lou WAKINS Rhebeck ('63),
one very special friend. How appropriate that this birthday
should fall on a Saturday in January. Just like the day that
I first met her, some odd 60 years ago, on the ski bus. We

City Girls", about two young women going to work in WWII at
Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This follows an earlier novel titled
"The Girls of Atomic City", about two young women going to
work in WWII at-you guessed it-Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This
sort of stuff annoys the hell out of me. What is it about
Hanford that whenever the Manhattan Project comes up, it's
largely ignored? Recently finished "The Making of the Atomic
Bomb", Richard Rhodes' monumental Pulitzer-Prize winning book
on the Manhattan Project. It was found in my late father-
in-law's study after he passed away. There is one page of
pictures of Hanford facilities. Otherwise, it doesn't get a
whole lot of mention; the book focuses on Los Alamos. As did
the film, "Fat Man and Little Boy", and as did the tv show
"Manhattan Project", wherein Hanford was mentioned once in
passing. Saw a recent tv documentary about the Bomb wherein
Hanford wasn't even shown. So why is it that every time
this subject comes up Hanford either is barely mentioned or
totally ignored? Was it even more secret than the other two
sites? Was it somehow less important to the war effort? We
know that's not true. Any novels about Hanford out there I
don't know about? Sheesh. Maybe I should make it the subject
of MY next novel. After all, I lived it, along with many
of the rest of you. I'm not sure Hanford is the sort of
notoriety that we should be celebrating, but it was a great
phenomenon. Anyone out there has any ideas about why Hanford
is so largely ignored in film and literature, I'm listening.

The memories are a clear as a bell... At the "request" of
the Spalding powers that be, We had just moved from Acacia/
Spalding to VanGiesen/Jason Lee... Thank goodness my Dad
wanted another "F" house or things could have been much
worse... instead of beating me to death, he just gave me the
lecture I've mentioned before about being the worst thing
that ever happened to my parents, never to expect to have a
drink with him, never to expect to be his friend and never,
ever call him to get outa jail... with that under my belt I
set out to meet new kids... now even that didn't start out
too well, something about me throwing a rock at the dog from
across the street ("Whitey") for barking at my dog ("Pepper")
and having the rock land in the middle of a famblie picnic...
the youngest future Bomber-babe jumped up and gave me what
for... of course she was a doll (as were the other two ('60,
'63_RIP). Clearly my chances at a date over the summer before
school started were somewhat lower than whale poo poo...
Shortly after the beginning of school (and after becoming
part of "the group", which included my old Spalding girl
friend, Gretchen GRIFFEN ('65-RIP)) another newer kid showed
up with his sister, who would both become great buds... My
teacher asked me to show the new guy the ropes (I mean it's
really hard... class, recess, lunch and class again, where
the teacher totally grossed me out by brushing her teeth in
the sink after eating Oreos... YUK!)... Turns out the new
kids would only stay in Richland through the 9th grade before
moving to Alaska... During the summer before 7th grade, the
"dog girl" would become the hostess with the mostest for our
gang in the basement of her house... I still swoon over that
summer... not sure we spent any time at the River that
summer... not even sure we ever left the basement... Later,
the teeny tiny prefab occupied by the new boy/girl team would
become a hang out... you could literally walk in one door and
out the other in case "mom" came home... these and other
memories will always remain with me... Though the boy/girl
team left before becoming Bombers they (at least he) seldom
misses a '65 event and in many ways it is as though he never
left (except he is an expert fisherman and many of the guys
Salmon fish with him in Alaska)... what else can one say...
my new adventures and meeting these b-day kids made my life

Ah jeeeeez... I have been trying to remember why the date of
the 27th is important... I knew I had done my birthday posts
and was just turning in for a long winter's nap when it hit
me... Damn I hope Maren is still awake... not sure when she
turns in the Sandstorm for publication over the net... oh
poop oh poop oh poop... At least it would be a fer piece from
So-Cal in March when I'm there for Terry's Play just to dunk
me inna river... I think... maybe? So, it is no secret, that
I have been head over heels over a slightly more "mature"
Bomber-babe since at least 7th grade... well actually way
more mature but not a great deal ahead of me chronologically...
After the first time I saw her, I thanked my lucky stars that
Brian JOHNSON ('65) had moved over to Johnston street... My
new favorite song became "Born too late"... well favorite...
maybe my least favorite song as I had no chance whatsoever of
this future Bomber-babe ever even noticing me... at least I
could swoon over her during noon dancing while breaking my
teeth onna frozen snicker from the school store... I'm sure
that made me even more attractive to her with the damned
halfa snicker hanging from my mouth... ask her to dance...
no way... I would never be able to meet her girls, her dogs
or her Grizzly husband or son-in-law or watch movies with
her till two in the morning... oh I was lost... I clearly
remember at one of the Col-Hi mixers when this kid named
Larry Smith (NAB) who hung around with Frank OSGARD ('63
almost/kinda) asking her to dance and his girlfriend, Short
Fat Fannie throwing a fit... it was a sight to see... I think
Larry wrote a song about it... something like: "Well at a
honky tonk party just the other night Fannie got jealous and
started a fight at the club I was dancin' with Mary Lou, I
hadda call Jim Dandy to the Rescue!" I think Frank and
Jimbeaux ('63) managed to break the whole thing up before
Uncle Tom Lyda got wind of it... that was a close one... now,
as I've mentioned before, this Bomber-babe is a doll and
blonde... did I mention she was blonde? Well, there are many
jokes about Blondes, none of them would be right for this
Babe... well, there is that hand eye coordination thing... I
mean she is blonde... now I would never, ever tell tales outa
school... but hypotheticals are another thing all together...
imagine if you will, I am talking to a four star Marine
general ('68) and imagine further that this Babe is rather a
fan of such general... purely hypothetically, mind you... so
adding one more factor, I am trying to introduce this Babe to
the General... oh yes... let's put a glass of red wine in her
hand and have her wearing a lovely white top... now what do
you think would happen if this Babe were to shoot out her
hand with the glass of red wine and attempt to shake hands at
the same time... boy wouldn't that be a gas if it ever really
happened... it would turn out as bad bad as Kippy Lou ('62)
making her famous pomegranate salad in a beautiful white
sweater without an apron! Now in the past, I have done my
best to name alla songs with this Babe's name in it this year
I'll leave that up to you... gee I sure hope this makes the

Here in So Tacoma, WA we just got over nearly a week of cold
wet weather making it totally miserable to try to accomplish
anything outside. I was glad I spent the time 2 weeks ago to
install my several sets of spotlights that turn on if someone
walks past the house into my back yard. I have similar sets
of lights on my shop building on the back of the property.
Least some think I am getting paranoid in my old age (76, Jan
6), There are several break-ins a night within 2 miles of our
quiet Cul de Sac nearly every night of the week.
So, I spent the last 5 days cooped up in the house sorting
papers. I had hoped to toss over half of them away but I
ended up saving over half. Many of them are a part of the
record of my life working with explosives, flammables, and a
dangerous variety of pyrotechnic devices. While my memory is
fading a bit I can still clearly remember 4th of July 1954
when I was allowed to actually handle pyrotechnic items. I
fused candles, fountains, ground bombs and some aerial shells
that had missing fuses. Before that I had to watch, fetch
tools, dig holes, hold ropes and learn what it was all about.
At about 35 or so I was dubbed the kid that played with
matches and never grew up. But I outlived that moniker and
by the mid-to-late '70s was teaching safety classes in
pyrotechnics and specialized explosives to Fire and Police
personnel and received invitations to work with some Federal
Agencies.
I need to say I have been fortunate to have married a
wonderful and talented women. Over 35 years experience in
Fireworks, Photography, and Graphic arts. She is truly my
life partner and I treasure our time together.
Thru all of this I remained an active shooter of Displays and
Special Effects as they became available. I held management
positions in several companies until out of frustration with
what I saw in the sky, I cobbled together an effort that I
named Entertainment Fireworks Inc. I was called stupid, a
damn fool and just plain crazy by the competition. But my
good friend and partner and I hung in there and set some very
high goals in quality and what I called "Entertainment Value"
in what appeared in the sky. Our manager in our Spokane and
Eastern office agreed with us and admired our stance in
quality entertainment. It was a lot of work but it paid off.
I dislike bragging and so will only say we are quite
successful, the leading company on the NW and well respected
members of the Fireworks Industry.
My personal career as a teacher and advisor has been
rewarding. A great many activities and trusted positions with
countless Departments and Agencies, has been interesting, and
with some quiet pride in taking part in numerous activities
involving Safety and Security at several levels. But my most
rewarding feelings still come from the cheers of the crowd as
the last of the finale falls to earth.
I am now semi-retired looking to spend time in my well-
equipped woodworking shop. I have made a commitment to the
City of Unalaska at Dutch Harbor. I will continue there as
long as I am able. It is a wonderful challenge. If I may say
I do a pretty fair job of "Entertaining People with Fire".
I am delighted to have Chuck LOLLIS ('64) as my very able
assistant at Dutch Harbor. If I can keep him from going
after foxes. The 4 legged kind are plentiful for his camera.
See the attached picture fired this past NYE. The picture was
taken at just over on mile by an employee of the Grand
Aleutian Hotel. Many are saying that the picture joins a
small group of photos said to be "the best ever". The
photographer has given me the rights use the picture as I see
fit including selling reproductions. Judging by the number of
requests for "permission to use", that picture may be front
cover on virtually every Fireworks publication in the world.
I see the essence of Dutch Harbor in that picture. The calm
waters are in the "Best Sheltered Harbor" in the Bering sea.
The fishing vessels represent what is said to be the "Premier
Fishing Port of the World". The snowy hills in the background
are Dutch in the winter. The perfect shell break speaks for
it's self. 11x14 copies on quality matt paper will be
available.

My displays at Dutch Harbor have been touted by residents as
two of the best things to happen twice a year. It is a solid
feeling to know I done good.

I suppose one of our higher purposes is to seek true
knowledge... unfortunately, my life has been filled with
gathering trivia... Knowledge... yes... important... not
often. In the morning when I see what date it says on my
meditation books I think "Happy Birthday so and so"...
probably sounds dumb as the subject above implies, but
important to me... during the day, before I do my b-day post
I think of the Bomber or Bombers having the B-day... today I
thought... now why have I always called this particular b-day
Bomber by that particular name... It was just a few minutes
ago that it dawned on me... now from very early on I was a
Buddy Holly fan... Huge fan... gigantic fan... I even have a
piece of the Lubbock High School Gym floor (much as I have a
piece of our gym floor and a piece from the Spanish Castle
(thanks Jimbeaux ('63))... I craved Buddy Holly, had an
autograph on my office wall (he gave very few), a picture of
his grave, my girlfriend on his statue on the West Texas Walk
of Fame and on and on I had a buddy who wrote a monthly
magazine featuring Buddy and other West Texas rockers...
we corresponded a great deal and some of my most prized
possessions came from him... When Buddy's mom died he stopped
publishing and I guess we stopped corresponding... so what on
earth can that have to do with today's Bomber B-day, you
ask... The Bass player for the Crickets was Joe B Mauldin
(NAB-RIP); Joe B. for short... ... I have always called this
Bomber by his first name and middle initial... now I know why
and so do you... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Joe B. FORD ('63) on your

to coin a phrase (thanks Leo WEBB ('63)... what on earth do I
say or not say about this Bomber... I can say that I have
known him almost my entire life. Now that length of time
provides me with a wealth of information... publishable and
nonpunishable... so where to begin... I spent tons of time
with this Bomber to say the least... now inna early days we
always just called him by his first name... later on the nick
name "Beaver or Beav" would take hold and continue to the
present day... I mean this is a kid who in later years would
break bones in ways almost unimaginable... in HS his lack of
talent took a back seat only to my own... most likely to
succeed we were not... nevertheless this guy would master
subjects that leave me with my mouth wide open... he would
become an expert in atomic energy... while I poured over the
US Constitution... now I am the first to admit that the
Constitution is a document I believe to be limited to its
written words... but atomic energy... my goodness I might
say that it's bounds have no bounds... now this is a kid who
would ride all over the area on a Honda 250 scrambler... when
either Larry GREER ('65) or this Bomber had his hood fly up
on the highway to Kennewick/Pasco... they simply exchanged
hoods on days when one or the other hadda date... his dress
has gone from normal Bomber attire to outfits that Warren
Beatty would drool over... all this notwithstanding, he
remains to this day, the perfect friend... "the beav"...

Gary and I have had this wonderful life full of love,
happiness and fun-filled 25 years. Life took a tilt with
tumor surgery and brain cancer. I thought we might be holding
hands on a new frightening and lonely road. But life became
sweet again.
Gary was able to express his thoughts of this ordeal by
writing an update every day to family and friends. Some
thought this was too personal. Of course it was, but it
enabled him to share, not for sympathy, but for feeling he
could and should share what was happening to get things out
of his head and off his chest.
The outpouring of prayers, kindness, support and sharing of
stories was unbelievable. We heard from people from my school
years, friends of yesterday and today, people we have never
met. It felt like everyone joined us on the potential lonely
road, gathered us up, turned us around, and we headed back to
living our sweet, normal life as we had before we knew there
was a difference in me. Not only was I embraced but, more
importantly, so was Gary.
We also were blessed to find this in our community with
people we see almost every day in our stores and restaurants.
We certainly are not faceless people standing in line or
sitting in a booth. We've enjoyed them and they have enjoyed
us for some sweet reason. Some thought these people would not
know what to do with such serious news and should not be
told. They knew exactly what to do with it. They embraced us
with prayers, big smiles, hugs, and caring thoughts. Our
community, along with each of you, have been our glue.
It's a journey of uncertainty with chemo, radiation and no
cure. But there is the possibility of slowing the cancer. And
there are miracles. So we wake up each day grateful for the
opportunity to enjoy our routines, chores, outings, and
everything that is "normal."
We don't know how to express our deep thanks for everyone who
read Gary's posts, who cared enough to express their thoughts
and say prayers, and who thanked him daily for his updates.
You truly have surrounded us with a friendship that holds
us together and blesses us each day. We thank you from the
bottoms of our hearts.

I also read "The Electric Woman", as always love Bill's
writing
Our Seattle Times the other day printed a story about a
"real" Electric Woman. Some scientists in China have come
up with one. They have made her skin out of soft pliable
material even showed them stretching the material between
their hands. She is like Siri and Alexis... she can
communicate with you. If she doesn't know the answer
sometimes she will repeat the question or will tell you
she doesn't know. She is very good looking and can interact
with you. Sounds and looks like the beginning stages of the
Electric Woman. Science Fiction coming alive.
I passed my book along to my daughter and son-in-law and
they both have read it. Bill, you are one of the best. I am
reading an Erle Gardner book now.

I also read "The Electric Woman", as always love Bill's
writing
Our Seattle Times the other day printed a story about a
"real" Electric Woman. Some scientists in China have come
up with one. They have made her skin out of soft pliable
material even showed them stretching the material between
their hands. She is like Siri and Alexis... she can
communicate with you. If she doesn't know the answer
sometimes she will repeat the question or will tell you
she doesn't know. She is very good looking and can interact
with you. Sounds and looks like the beginning stages of the
Electric Woman. Science Fiction coming alive.
I passed my book along to my daughter and son-in-law and
they both have read it. Bill, you are one of the best. I am
reading an Erle Gardner book now.

I promise, NO blond jokes.
Now for something completely different. There is an older
Bomber celebrating a birthday today. I knew him back then. We
"thesped" together on the auditorium stage in two different
productions. In one, I don't think we shared the stage; in
the other we had a whole act together. And then, sometime
after graduation, he went and married a fellow classmate of
mine. Some how neither event computes; but such are the
foibles of life.
A tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!" to
Gene BARFUSS ('53). Be sure to pick up the tab if Treasure
('54) takes you out to dinner.

I have to throw my opinion in here about Bill Scott's latest
book "The Electric Woman." I read this book (as well as his
other 5 books) and loved it. I truly believe this book would
make a fantastically successful movie. Wish I was in the

reactions to The Electric Woman. I've had similar reactions
from others, such as "I didn't think I'd like it but . . ."
or "It's not the kind of book I usually read, but . . .". You
are my best marketing team right now. As to the Seattle Times
article Ann Thompson mentioned regarding the new Chinese
android: it proves what I've said before about The Electric
Woman-that this stuff is far from fantastical, and it is
coming faster than we think. It seems my writing is barely
ahead of developing reality!

Re: making new friends
Before I start the festivities lemme just say that 50 years
ago at 4am I awoke to nearly the entire country of Vietnam
under siege during the Tet Offensive of 1968. Remember our
brothers and sisters.
Now... I gotta say that I can only wish (and I try never to
wish) that I could have met every kid who ever went to Col-Hi
and its precursors... As I look through eh Columbians I
recognize faces from the sandstorm and just think I shoulda
been more open and greeting back inna day... the guy I am
celebrating today and I became acquainted via sandstorm and
email... I look for him on the SS and read every word... we
have all lived diverse lives since leaving Mac Hall and I
can't tell you how I enjoy learning about the lives for
fellow Bombers... I can only hope he considers me as much a
friend as I consider him... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Dennis HAMMER
