Mabel Deranleau - 1931

Mabel Deranleau - recent

Mabel Josephine Deranleau Hackney was born on April 30, 1913 on a small farm outside Enterprise, Oregon. She was the fourth child born to Henry and Elizabeth Deranleau. The family was eventually blessed with nine children.

The growing family moved to Clarkston, WA, and on to a wheat farm at Linden, ID where Mabel enjoyed the rigors of farm life and the education of a one room schoolhouse. Mabel and her sister Rose ('32-RIP) spent 2 high school years in Moscow, ID at a convent boarding school run by the Ursuline nuns. Mabel treasured those nuns and those school memories. Mabel was the salutatorian of her 1931 class of Richland High School Colts.

The ravages of the Great Depression caused the next family move in 1930 to Richland. Mabel was to spend her next 77 years as a proud resident of the Tri-Cities. She met and married a local Richland boy, Clayton Hackney, and they would share a 56 year marriage and the blessings of 3 sons, Lewis, Clifford and Don. The family operated a peppermint farm in the Kennewick Highlands until Clayton's retirement in the 1970s. Mabel was a full partner as homemaker, mother and farm wife willingly sharing the heavy work burdens of family farm life. Clayton died in 1990 and Mabel lived almost twenty years as a widow. She lived in the family home into her late 80s, resided at the Manor at Canyon Lakes and spent her final two years in Spokane.

The family wishes to specially remember Eilleen Moffit who lovingly provided care to Mabel during her last years. Mabel was a long time parishioner of St. Joseph's Parish and later Holy Spirit Parish. Many a St. Joseph's "rummage sale" depended upon the generous volunteer work of Mabel and her friends.

Mabel is predeceased by her husband, Clayton, seven of her siblings: brothers Charles, Lucian, & Gene and sisters Lillian, Marie, Rose ('32), and Genevieve ('34-RIP) and survived by her brother Ray ('43).

She is further survived by her sons and spouses, Lewis & Nadine Hackney, Clifford & Marie Hackney, Donald & Sherie Hackney, Sharon Cushman, seven grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Mabel was a good and contributing citizen and a blessing to her family. She ran the good race, fought the good fight and has now joined the large group of family and friends she had out lived. She has enriched our lives and she will be missed.
