BOMBER MEMORIAL
DOUGLAS LEONARD "DOUG" STILES ~ Class of 1957
October 12, 1939 - September 27, 2011
Heaven is a much more exciting place upon receiving the soul of Douglas Stiles on September 27, 2011.
His favorite hobby of traveling on land and sea with his wife of 48 years is completed with this last long journey. As his many friends can attest, in addition to traveling he enjoyed boating, model trains, the constant absorption of knowledge, spending time with his family and socializing with any and all who would listen and enjoy his unique regaling of his many experiences.
He was born October 12, 1939, in Bridgeport, CT to Frank and Joyce Stiles. He moved to Richland in 1944. Doug and his younger brother
David ('59-RIP) grew up in the apartment above the Richland Theater.
After serving in the Navy for 4 years, he worked for his parents at the Uptown Theater where he met his wife Sally who also worked there at the candy counter. Together they raised 2 children, 3 dogs, and 2 ducks. Staying active in the community, Doug ran for City Council, and later after the purchase of his beloved houseboat, Tweedle Dee, he and Sally joined the Richland Yacht Club, where he served as the Commodore in 1996 and 1997.
Skilled at many things: he was a stock boy, a police officer for the city of Richland, an operator for the Richland Sewer Plant (The Rose Bowl), the owner operator of Bassett Transit bus lines, and in his retirement he drove dump trucks simply for fun.
He is survived by his wife of 4.858 decades Sally Johnson Stiles ('61), his son Kevin ('82) (wife Karen), daughter Laura (husband Joe), granddaughter Kayleighann, and three step grandsons; Tye, Elijah, and Cord.
A memorial service will be held October 6, 2011, 11AM, at the LDS Stake Center at 1720 Thayer Drive, Richland. A gathering of all friends and family will be held directly after, at the same location.
Should friends desire, contributions may be sent to the Tri-Cities Cancer Center, Kennewick.
Hillcrest Memorial Center of Kennewick is handling the arrangements. The family invites you to sign the online Guest Book.
