From: Karen COLE Correll ('55) Sandstorm Extra that might be political Re: Political ? Extra Re: Free Lunch I feel the need to respond to the "Free lunch" topic. My father-in-law was a prolific writer, and an amazing man. At 100 years of age, he threw out the first pitch at the Mariner's game, only took vitamins, walked every day, and wrote little stories of his life to over 100 relatives. I asked him one time why he didn't write more about the depression, as I was interested in how they coped with their daily lives, but also the lives of everyday people. He responded that he had to go on welfare a few days, and was deeply ashamed. This man lined up his farm machinery to give the bank to repay a seed loan, and brought his family to Spokane. He sold wood and apples on one street corner, while Bing Crosby sang on another. Anyway, welfare at that time consisted of digging ditches all day for a day's food for his family. He said there were many men who stood around talking rather than working. It seems the system hasn't changed all that much, people working to pay for others. The point I'm making is, people do need help and there are always those who take advantage. The end of my story is, they moved to Ellensburg where they felt they had reached the "Land of plenty" for a farmer. This talented man had a genius IQ, and there wasn't anything he couldn't do, and do well. I so admired and loved him. Merry Christmas to all, and don't ever forget the reason for the season. -Karen COLE Correll ('55) ~ Nine Mile Falls, WA ****************************************************************
