So here I am with due "Belle Donne" from the GMC63 sharing a
birthday, and I don’t know which to list first. Me thinks the
term for such a quandary is "being on the corns of a Dalmatian".
I was going to use alphabetical by date of rank, but then I
realized one of ‘em has always been a front row kinda girl, she
being only about 3'8". But she claims she can still dunk on the
COLE twins ('63). She is half of one of those undividable duos
like Crunch & Dez, Scotch & Soda, A&W, Cisco & Poncho and Rinse
& Spit. The other is a South End treasure who you can always
count on to raise your spirits in a heartbeat. I've known her
since about 1950, which was shortly after Jerry KERN ('63)
started shaving.
Happy Birthday to Annie ENGEL Schafer ('63), who always will be
half of Annie & Freddie, and to Mary Ann WEILAND ('63).

Wow the first of August... whoooooooooooooosh time just rushes
past... today, we have one of those wonderful Bomber-babes who
had me swooning all during my sophomore year... I did a lotta
swooning back then... and she was (is) just sooooooooo cool...
the guy is a guy I've come to look forward to seeing every
time I get to town... between the two of them they keep me
very thankful for being a Bomber! I was so glad to see the
babe a few weeks ago when a few Bombers got together to be
with a dear friend and I was just so happy to see her... just
don't get to enough these days... please join me in wishing

This weekend the city of Silverton, OR, celebrates yet another
Homer Davenport Fest. Why am I mentioning this, since it has
nothing to do with Bombers? It is more of a family thing. My son
Richard (3rd in line) has stepped up to head the festival for
the second time. Another son, Sean (2nd), will be the 7:30 PM
featured performer on the Main Stage. He and a friend will be
doing something from a beetles song book, although why anyone
would want to do insect music... wait a minute... I'm being
informed that it is the other group of almost the same name.
That's right, the lads from Liverpool: Paul, George, John and
Pete. There are those that claim the later addition to the
group, one Mr. Starkey, is really an interloper. Oh well, I
digress.
In addition, my wife, Karyl, and I will be driving small
passenger carrying vehicles about the festival grounds. Not at
the same time, nor the same vehicle.
So, if you've a mind to, do as some game-shown host said: "Come
on down!" Silverton is just a few miles east of Salem, OR, and
there are at least 3 freeway exits that will point you in the
right direction.
And a belated tip of the ol' propeller beanie in honor of the
Alumni Sandstorm's birthday.

Re: The best laid plans
Well, I did it again... read "August 2" and wrote "August 3" on
my yellow sticky... So I missed the first Kadlec baby's birthday
on August 2, 2011... but belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Ed QUIGLEY
('62)... Sorry, man... "it won't happen again" and "the check's
in the mail". But today I gotta remember the guy who brings us
the weekly grain price report and has the largest collection of
Bomber memorabilia in the world... Even larger than mine which
is saying a lot... I've been called the keeper of everything
Bomber, from banners to Desert Inn Cabana keys... but I can't
hold a candle to this guy... It's not his birthday but it is a
very important day(s) for him and his favorite Lion... did I
tell ya about the time I was getting a Bomber tattoo over in
Pasco and every lion in the world was gathered across the street
from the tattoo parlor? That little bitty tattoo on my leg felt
as tho it was the size of a billboard... was sure I was gonna
relive the night HARRAH ('65) and I got jumped by a bunch of
guys in Yakima when we got lost after a basketball game... it
was all in my mind tho... they didn't even notice me in my
"nuke-em" shirt... (Reminds me of MADDY ('67) going down to see
certain groups of visitors to his little haven in Hawaii get off
the boats wearing his nuke em shirt... )... so anyway, this
Bomber has been with his lady for a buncha years and they will
be celebrating their special days on August 3-4, 2011 so HAPPY
ANNIVERSARY to Gary ('64) and ['65 Lion] Janice BEHYMER!!!!!!!!

Re: Speaking of Sandstorm anniversaries ...
At the bottom of this post, you will find my post from the
Sandstorm of 8/10/2000.
Here's what happened next:
On May 7, 2001, 3:37am, Thomas PEASHKA ('68) (who was living
in Spokane -- I was living in Richland), couldn't sleep. He
Googled his band name, "Isle of Phyve" -- just an idle thing to
do while trying to fall back to sleep, or wake up all the way
& get started on his day. The 'hit' he came up with was my
Sandstorm post, below. He responded with an e-mail note to me
(answering the question I had posed in my post.)
He & I started e-mailing regularly, then talking on the phone.
I was getting ready (in May, 2001) to leave for Spokane that
August to do some post graduate work. I ended up attending
the same church in Spokane as he & his then 5th grade son did.
Nikolai (the son) and I 'fell in love' immediately -- I became
(his name for me), his "soul Mom." Thomas & I became close
friends. In fact, he was my sponsor as I completed the process
of joining the Catholic Church.
Although I returned to Richland in December of 2001, I visited
Nikolai and Thomas often between February, 2002 and May, 2002,
when I moved back to Spokane. Life went along ... and March 17,
2004, Thomas and I were married in that same church (St.
Augustine's). Nikolai was the best man. (By that time, he was
calling me just plain "Mom".)
In July 2005, we moved to our little farm place here in Idaho,
and launched a whole new life and way of living.
Anyway, I love so many things about the Sandstorm that I can't
list them all here. But my two BIGGEST thank you's for the
Sandstorm (and Gary, Maren, Richard) are a happy one and a hard
one: (1) Being the vehicle that was used in the round-about way
described above, to bring Thomas and me together (2) Being the
vehicle that allowed for incredible support both via direct
email, and via the response the Harlan FOOTE's ('61-RIP 2/18/10)
CaringBridge.Org site during and after the time I (along with
Thomas and my kids) provided end-of-life care for him. That
was/is, without doubt, the hugest pain I have every suffered --
and the Bomber hands reaching out to me/us, and folding in
prayer for me/us had so much to do with our making it through.
(P.S. - Thanks to Maren for telling me about CaringBridge.Org in
the first place. What a God-send!)
So please read below, just for a little jaunt back down memory
lane with me (can't believe it's been 11 years since I wrote
those words!)
And CELEBRATE and GIVE THANKS for THE SANDSTORM with me!!

I did not know the Pastels were from "out of town"
(Pasco.) Wow! I, too, remember seeing Paul Revere and the
Raiders at the Richland Roller Rink (that's the way I
remember the name from the '60s -- different from what
YOU called it, the Roller Bowl). That was so cool -- but
think how lousy the acoustics must have been. Nobody
seemed to care, though!
Maybe someone has already mentioned this, but remember
"The Isle of Phyve" (spelling??) -- Randy FULLMER, Tom
PEASHKA (I think) and .... who else? And what was the
name of the band in which Keith GOSNEY ('66??) played?
Also, the band Larry HORNE ('68) played in?? How much did
those bands get paid for playing at our proms, etc., in
the late '60s -- anybody know?"

To further the clarification of muddy waters; the official title
of this weekend's fun in Silverton, OR, is "Homer Davenport
Community Festival". It runs from 11am to 10pm Friday and
Saturday, August 5th and 6th and from 11am to 6pm Sunday,
August 7th.
My 3rd son, Richard, is President of the Festival Committee (and
I thought committees were chaired, not presided, oh well). The
name of my 2nd son's, Sean, group is "Glass Onion." They will
be performing from 7:30pm to 9pm, Friday, the 5th, on the Main
Stage which is located in Coolidge-McClaine Park in Silverton.
My wife, Karyl, will be operating the transporter on Saturday,
the 7th; and I will be at the wheel on Friday the 6th, from
11am to 2pm. This will be the only transporter on the festival
grounds, so, hopefully, it will be hard to miss (and we drivers
will also try to miss whatever may be in the way).
Enough of that. I have also learned that somewhere around the
first of this month Al Gore discovered the Internet which has
made all this communication possible. I had heard it was
something like the 20th anniversary of the founding.

What are the chances? So I'm at Ghandi Mart checking out the
Racing Form and see a slam dunk Trifecta in the 3rd race for
Today (Thursday). It's like the clouds parted and I'm that much

almost like there was some form of divine intervention, who
wouldn't choose Mister Bomber, JCP's Favorite Sea Gull and
Chesty's Boy Jimmy.

Re: Big middle and little kids
These birthdays just seem to keep rolling in. Today we gotta big
kid, a middle sized kid and a little kid who would never eat his
porridge... The big kid was very nice to me last year when they
had me "announce" the basketball game... it must have been agony
for him and Gary WEBB ('64) to sit there with a guy who thinks a
slam dunk is something you do with spudnuts! I mean all those
guys looked alike going up and down the floor and besides they
were all Bombers... "and now folks the Bombers steal from the
Bombers and number 5 glides down the floor and he's up and it's
a hole in one... no an eagle... no a birdy... no wait a touch-
back... " But hey it's all in fun... right? Then there's the
middle kid who I enjoyed watching in Speech class so much...
this guy was a class act and his impromptu talks were just the
best... never on subject but always entertaining! Finally we
have the kid who got in trouble for tearing the picture out of
Life Magazine, of Normie Grabouski munching on a cheeseburger in
the "Kookie Kar" before it was even on 77 Sunset Strip... and
gluing it... yes... not pinning it... gluing it to his bedroom
wall. Haven't seen Normie in a few years since people stopped
paying his way to the major car shows... sure do miss him cuz he
is still one funny dude... I do have two of his skull gear shift
knobs that are now worth about halfagazzillion dollars but are
way too cool to sell. Used to love him showing the ladies his
anatomically correct rocking horses... he'd lift the tail and
flop... the ladies would faint... well ok... maybe correct is
the wrong word... he may have exaggerated just a little on the
size... but then again I haven't heard from the little kid b-day
boy hisself since mid-may... maybe I called him a big fat liar
just one time too often... or maybe I forgot to acknowledge that
he has known the divine Ms. HOFF ('64) way longer than I have
often enough... (geez... sounds like a Willie Nelson song...
Maybe I didn't something quite as often as I could have... ) so
anyway let's wish a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Roger FISHBACK ('62),
Ken(ny) DALL ('64) and Jimmy HEIDLEBAUGH ('65) on August 4th,

The Jim NOLAND Foundation first annual golf tourney is planned
for Friday August 12th at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick.

A final clarification (I hope).
Having spoken with the President of the Committee, I have
learned that my driving will not be on the Festival grounds.
Instead I will be driving the shuttle from downtown Silverton to
the Festival grounds. This should prove to be fun, and hopefully
the streets will be free of parade obstacles. Oh, yes, there is
a parade beginning at the old high school at 10am on Saturday.
For those who are so inclined, the Homer Classic 8K run and 2K
run/walk is also on Saturday beginning at 8:30am.
The Silverton Poker Run starts at 11am on Sunday at the Salem
Harley-Davidson Store (last bike leaves at noon).
And if you really want to push it, the Davenport Races begin
at Noon on Main Street (you actually get to push someone in a
davenport). Wonder if there is an opening for die-hard couch-
potatoes?

Once you turn onto 15th... just stay on this road. It will
turn to 17th automatically & then become Washougal River Rd.
Enjoy the beautiful river road for 10 miles. Look for
mile post 10. You will see an intersection sign... This is
Laurel Lane. Turn Right.
You will know when you are close once you pass Cape Sky Horn
School on the left and a little further down the road,
Mercentile Store will be on your right.
At the intersection the American Legion Hall is on the left.
You will turn right! (Laurel Lane)
You can only go one block and you will see... Yes... There
is another Laurel Lane. This time turn left! Go down the

Gotta leave in a few for a dinner on the strip... dunno if I've
ever mentioned it but I hate going on the strip. It is one of my
least favorite things. This is in a big fancy mall that I hate
to go to because I can't find my way around it at all. The
restaurant is unfindable and I'll be lucky to get there on
time... I'd follow my partner but he uses Valet and I can't cuz
I don't want some kid finding my gun under the seat... guess I
could just drive in the heat with my jacket on so I can just
keep the gun under my jacket rather than leave it in the car...
but not too long ago some guy got shot here at COSTCO cuz an
employee noticed his gun and things got crazy... as I said...
arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh... So, anyway gotta big kid birthday one of
them awesome big sis's that I was always swooning over... like
I said about Ann ENGEL Schafer ('63) the other day... I did a
lotta swooning... oh... by the way, Jimbeaux ('63), saying HB

I wish we could be there, enjoy the festival and maybe even
ride with you on your bus. We have stayed in Silverton in our
RV on two different occasions, just because we like the area and
enjoy the countryside and people. The first time we were there,
Silverton was having their annual wine and jazz festival; lots
of fun. We have had a good German lunch and beer at the Bavarian
Restaurant where you live, Mt. Angel. The last time we were in
the area was during tulip season and enjoyed the cacophony of
colors in the fields. We hope to get up there again next year
and perhaps we could join up with you in Mt. Angel for some
sauerkraut and beer.

ATTENTION CLASS OF '56: Just a quick reminder that you have

Dorothy Douglas, a Bomber mom, passed away Sunday evening, July
31, one day after her 93rd birthday. All four of her sons –
S. W. "Walker" Douglas ('57), David Douglas ('62), James Douglas
('72) and Marc Douglas ('76) all graduated from Col-Hi. All four
of us were together with her to celebrate Mother’s Day, and will
be together again to celebrate her life on Wednesday, August 10.
Mom gave each of her sons a scrapbook of family history,
pictures and mementos when we married. (I was the last one to
get his for some reason.) She included newspaper and other
clippings that mentioned us. Looking through my scrapbook
tonight, I ran across an old Sandstorm which included the
article that I was the first sophomore in its history admitted
to the Sandstorm staff. My one claim to fame!
She was a great mom. We will all miss her.

that just go together... One year I gave a little account of

Hi Folks.
My wife and I are going to drive to Astoria, OR this Thursday
and visit my brother Ron and his wife who just moved from
10,000 ft. in Marble, CO to sea level. Oldest American city
on the west coast, 200 years. Anybody close around there?
At the end of March we were house sitting again for my brother-
in-law in Tacoma near Brown's Point. My brother Mike ('69) said
to check out the bakery, book store and restaurant in Black
Diamond which is east of Tacoma about 30 miles. It is a coal
mining town in Washington but most everything was closed except
for the bakery/restaurant, as it was to early in the year.
Talked to an interesting guy who was doing sprinkler line was
the one to who restored the old steam engine that used to
pull the coal cars out of the mine. His name of course was Gomer
and his father was Welsh miner who came to the US in 1917. I
was reading a book from the library by Homer Hickam called the
Dinosaur Hunters and reading about some of the other books by
him I discovered also wrote about coal mines in West Virginia.
The book was called Rocket Boys and after the movie was made
was renamed October Sky, also several others. Very interesting
author and after Vietnam and college worked for NASA and being
a diver wrote about U-boats off the east coast during WW2. The
book was Torpedo Junction and very good.
Usually when I find an author I like I read everything by that
person, so to the retired Coast Guard Lt. Commander check his
books out. I also read another very good book about Marines in
Vietnam called Matterhorn by Karl Marlates that only took him 30
years to write, which I can well understand since it changed all
our lives. Who thought that in 1965 when I and friends talked
about getting drafted, that we all thought the police action
would be over long before we graduated. Peace folks.

Re: Bella the runt and other obligations
I really want to wish all of my classmates that have been fated
to enter thier 7th decade a HAPPY BIRTHDAY and many more reunions.
There was a time ago when I wrote about Bella, runt of litter
that Maggie, The Magnificent, had picked up when the pup was
about 15 minutes old and wedged her between siblings and put her
on a teat. We took her and brought her home to be part of the
family that missed Daisy so much. She was a very high strung dog
and when we took her to the vet they had to muzzle her just to
get her examined and get her shots.
Then came the time when it was time to relieve her of the burden
of motherhood. I took her into the vet and she had her tail
between her legs and seemed VERY anxious.
I got a call from the vet, who was Phi Beta Kappa at WSU, and
said she had done great during the surgery. He made a point of
telling me that he had given her a shot to relax her prior to
being anesthetized and become totally relaxed. He said her true
nature came out where she just loved everybody and accepted
their love in return and was not frightened at all. It is
amazing how much we can learn from "dumb" animals. How much we
have learned and how much we have forgotten. Thank you for your
indulgence.

[Yesterday] On this day in history, August 9, 1945, a B-29
Superfortress piloted by Maj. Charles W. Sweeney of the U.S. Air
Force drops "Fat Man"—a five ton atomic bomb equivalent to 75
million sticks of dynamite—on the Japanese port city Nagasaki.
Only three days earlier the Enola Gay became the first aircraft
to use an atomic bomb in warfare when it dropped a similar bomb
("Little Boy") on Hiroshima. A lot of Richland folks of yore,
helped get it done!

Re: Weather
I have two things to comment about or should I say get off my
chest; first is about this global warming thing. I remember back
to the good old days in Bomber Land where summer started about
the end of May first of June and the temperature would climb to
the 80s, 90s and 100s, that was summer. We were out playing,
riding our bikes, running through the irrigation water coming
from the sprinkler in those days and even once in a while we got
to go to the old swimming pool in Howard Amon Park. Now here it
is the 8th of August and at 2pm it was 64° here in green Eugene,
OR; so much for global warming. I do think we have had 6 or 8
days this year in the upper 70s lower 80s; so much for summer
here.
The other thing that has been on my mind is all this fuss
about the high temperatures around the nation, I remember back
from July 5th to the middle or end of August, 1971 that the
temperature in Bomber Land was over 100° everyday during that
period. I remember because I broke my leg and was in a toe to
hip cast, melting my leg away. Some of us had air conditioning
by then but back when I was younger all we had was a fan if we
were lucky; some had swamp coolers that just made one sweat. We
did not think anything about it being hot; it was summer and we
were enjoying the hot weather. I remember working at Westgate
Conoco on the hot blacktop with air temperature at 110° and did
not think much about it. I never remember us hitting the news
like those who are warm are now. Guess we were just too close
to the reactors, glowed in the night, and did not know the
difference. Which reminds me what about the winds in Bomber
Land; a 70 mph wind is common and gusts close to 100 have
happened with no national coverage. Anywhere else it would be
classified as a hurricane or tornado, go figure.

she died on August 2 in a nursing home in Issaquah, WA. She had
been living there about six months. She was 91. My immediate

I came across an old Alumni Sandstorm entry written by Jo Miles ('64)
a number of years ago concerning Jim Spencer ('62-RIP) and a
broken nose. While Jim is remembered as a great baseball player I
remember him as carrying a big stick on the golf course. He was
an early user of a driver with a fiberglass shaft. The flex on it
was similar to a fishing fly rod but 'man o' man' could he ever
hit it. This is a FYI for all of us who did not realize that
Jim's son, Sean, had a short stint in the major leagues.

Hadda start this little message with one of my favorite Bobby
Helms songs. When I went to Vietnam, I cut all female ties.
Just wasn't interested in getting one a them Ferlin Husky "Dear

and Sue" was one of my favorite songs by BJ Thomas and Billy's
name wuzn't John either... so anyway, this girl was the only

was always there too (in letters)... funny how these things stick
with you... Like I've always wondered why I carried C. MOORE's

have this water buffalo hide wallet with those pictures in it...
I mean C. Moore was Pierre's ('65) girlfriend for crimanny sakes
and I hadn't seen Billy since 9th grade... won't soon forget
walking in to a small PX in DaNang while waiting to go home...
don't recall how long we hadda stay in DaNang... I think it was
only a day or two... all the guys who were still alive that I
went over with were there too... I got all spiffed up for the
ride home and was standing in line to check out with whatever I
had bought and I heard a guy behind me talking... without even
seeing his face I whirled around and said : "Billy Simmons!"...
he hadn't changed a bit. But this ain't about C. Moore (tho she's
still very dear to me) or Billy (ain't seen him since)... this is
about that special girl who was always there for me so many years
ago... HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Jo Marie ROBERTS ('65) on August 10,

My wife, Sylvia PLUMB ('56), and I will be in Richland August 11-
15th. We will be staying at the Red Lion where we are having a
family reunion and we plan to tour some of the homes that Sylvia
and I used to live in while were going to school in Richland. Our
families will coming from New York, California, Alaska, Kansas,
Oregon, Oklahoma and of course Washington. Hope to tell them some
Bomber history stories and even get them to the Spudnut Shop.

Re: temps and winds in Richland
I remember the hot, hot summers in Richland, but it didn't seem
to bother us, as kids, we just played outside, ran through
sprinklers, went down to the "big pool" and played outside til
street lights came on (that was our curfew), and, sometimes, we'd
also sleep outside. We didn't have a/c or a swamp cooler, just
opened the windows and hoped for a breeze to cool the house off
at nights. Didn't help, though. The heat really bothered my
mom... she'd put tin foil on all the windows, close all the
curtains and drapes, put a "soaker" hose on the roof, hoping it
would cool down the attic (didn't help one blasted bit... good
thing they didn't pay for water, back then...*grin*).
As for the winds... hated them... between blowing the dust all
over and not being able to see and stinging bare legs, it just
about blew you down... to this day, I hate the wind... puts my
"teeth on edge".

Re: Global Warming...
While there is some worthy debate about the issue (and the
skeptics' research and analysis needs to be aired rather than
summarily dismissed), there was one news item in Seattle recently
I found amusing.
My wife, Pam HUNT ('66), and I were over there for a few days
three weeks ago with our granddaughter Jazmyn. (Jazmyn's mother
was in UW hospital for serious surgery.)
One weather person announced that, so far this year, Seattle had
experienced 78 minutes of summer...
On another topic:
It has always been a mixed-emotion feeling that I share my
birthday with the second atomic bomb dropping in Japan. When the
news media begin their reminders of the two bombs, I can see the
photo of the headlines on the local paper about how Hanford
had participated in those events.
I don't intend to resurrect the "Proud of the Cloud" debate,
but I just finished a relatively new book that gave me another
piece of history. "Unbroken" By Laura Hillenbrand, author of
"Seabiscuit: An American Legend" tells the story of Louie
Zamperini, an Olympic medalist track star. The story is about
his experiences in WW2 in the Japanese POW camps. If you know
anything about what happened in those camps, you'll know it is
a brutal book.
But the thing that struck me relative to the A-bombs was what
happened in the POW camps. As the Allies were closing in on
Japan, the Japanese executed incredibly horrible kill-all orders
on those camps in danger of being liberated.
Louie's camp was scheduled for that extremity on August 22nd.
When the Emperor surrendered, instead of executing the order,
the guards abandoned the camps. Aside from that part, the story
is about Zamperini's courage in facing the brutality and the
destruction it wreaked in his life after the war. The most
amazing part, though, was what happened to him that sent him back
to Japan to find the worst of those guards and meet with him.
Well worth reading.

Randy FREE ('61) passed away Wednesday August 9, 2011. He moved
to Richland with his parents when he was one year old. He
attended Columbia High School along with his two brothers Ken
FREE ('59) and Jerry FREE ('62). He was an outstanding athlete
and was a starting forward for Art Dawald's Richland Bombers. He
proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps.
Randy led an adventuresome life along with many misadventures.
Randy was very grateful and overwhelmed by the outpouring
letters, cards, pictures, and visits he received from family,
Richland Bombers, Marine Corps buddies, and life-long friends
during the last month of his life. He fought a courageous battle
with cancer before moving on.

Wow...I got lucky this year and find Club 40 is on a free weekend
for me [September 9, 10, and 11 2011].
So Jackie and I will be there. And we will bring a book or two of
pictures of our adventures in pyro and travel.
Now let's see... where did I put that registration form? Some
days I feel like I am almost 70 years old, but most of the time
I am able to not act like it yet. I still do many of the things
I did 30 years ago... but... sigh... It is not as easy or as
painless as it was back then.
We found a really low cost flight on AlaskAir and so we will be
in Honolulu August 24th to 27th to visit daughter Sandra and
grandson Lee. Oddly enough, the fare is from Anchorage to
Honolulu and return, and I had already bought round trip tickets
to Anchorage to work with Jackie on the annual Houston Founders
Day display on Saturday, August 20th. If any of you are in the
neighborhood is it a quite large display and worth seeing. If
any of you do come by we are on the hill above the Houston Fire
Station, come up and say hi.
By the way, it is fun and interesting to read the writings of
some of you nearly ancient Bomber Alums. I was still quite young
during the mid to late '40s and reading your observations of
some of the happenings, both local and national, and even,
international give me a better perspective on things. I remember
Richland going wild with the announcement of the end of WW2, but
I had no real comprehension of it. WW2 is high on my reading
list, but it is something that happened way far away. But I have
been to Hiroshima and Berlin and seen the evidence. There are
lots of buildings in Berlin with bullet holes/chips in them. And
the Koln (Cologne) Cathedral was badly damaged and while it was
rebuilt there are still signs of the war. But I digress, so I
will just say thanks and keep writing.
The aftermath of the 4th of July is all cleaned up and put away
and all the college kids are off for a few days before returning
to the grind. We had a great crew of temps this year, best ever.
But what is that saying? "No rest for the wicked?" We brought in
a demo machine and crushed and burned our row of storage sheds
before they fell apart and hurt someone. They were 10 years
old when we bought the company 16 years ago. Now, myself, our
warehouse tech, and the last temp who is a construction worker
out of work, are replacing the sheds with more and bigger.
But it is nice to have a project, as if I didn't have anything
else to do. I try to spend at least 2 hours 3 evenings a week on
my yard, gardens, and shop and den building. The flowers and my
roses look pretty good, and the tomatoes and cukes in the green
house are growing like weeds. The radishes and bib lettuce are
going to be yummy in salads. Jackie and I set up an automatic
watering system and it has made a big difference.
The American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) will hold it's
annual international convention in Seattle this Mid September.
Entertainment Fireworks is the host company. So we will get to
do some international elbow rubbing for several days. Jackie has
been appointed the official photographer of the APA for all APA
events. Her normally exquisite photos are now even better with her
new Sony camera. She has finally found a camera to match her
talent and her pictures that have been great in the past are now
really spectacular.
Looking forward to seeing friends at Club 40.

Hi Bombers!
In regard to Tedd CADD's ('66) mention of Louis Zamperini.
My son had the privilege of meeting him years ago when he went
to the same church he did in Hollywood. "Such an honor", he said.
At that time he bought for all of the family copies of Louis' own
biography, "Devil at my Heels", a great read as well. For those
of you who live in Southern California, Louis Zamperini will be
speaking about his life this Sunday night at the Angel Stadium,
in Anaheim, at the Harvest Crusade. Tonight for those of you who
have teen-agers or grandchildren, Bethany Hamilton will be there,
the girl whose story is told in the new summer movie, "Soul
Surfer".
Life in the gorge is busy and good. We have had a full year of
being involved in community activities, church activities and
just exploring the area. We have entertained 4 Bombers so far and
I hope many more of you come our way. Some people complain of the
wind here, which comes up a little each day. It makes me laugh!
To me it is more like a summer breeze. They don't know about real
wind, like we had in Richland with the dust storms.

Re: Joy and sadness
I really hate it when we lose another Bomber. I read in the paper
this morning about a very hopeful "cure" for leukemia which may
also work for other types of cancer. I don't know about you but
the first time I ever heard of leukemia was when Danny Thomas'
daughter was stricken and he began to work for a cure. I have
since lost friends from that form a cancer as well as others.
Though I was expecting it any day, I was so saddened when Ellen
WEIHERMILLER ('63) let me know this morning (now yesterday for
you) that Randy FREE ('61) had passed after his bout with lung
cancer. I am so glad that so many of his friends were able to see
him before he passed. It was expected but still it doesn't make
it any easier for anyone. I try and take comfort in the thought
that those who leave us go to a far better place and that it is
my job to accept and just "Be still and know I am God". God bless
you, Randy.
Now if I can just convince the birthday girl that her special day
is so very important to me notwithstanding the sad news given
above. Ya see, I have in the past confessed I was madly in love
with the B-day girl during Jr. hi and High School. To this day
I will never know what held me back from asking some girls out
while I had no problem asking others... I mean it really makes
no sense at all... as I recall there were just a few girls that
every time I got near them, my heart started pounding, I got outa
breath and I just panicked... I was lucky to be able to pass them
in the hall without tripping over my size 12s (yup... 6' tall and
size 12 shoes from the age of 12)... so I guess ya win some and
ya lose some. But I still get pretty darned giddy every time this
Bomber-Babe sends me a new picture... Oh hell... I get way giddy!

Re: Class of '71 Reunion
I had a chance to talk to some of the class of '71 Bombers at
their reunion this last week end. As usual they were having a
big Bomber Blast like we use to have.
It just so happened that our family reunion was going on at the
same time and so we were bumped downstairs for our banquet. But
that was just fine. We had our own blast downstairs.
Their Friday evening mixer was very well attended and loud.
But that was okay, except when they broke off into small groups
and continued to party later that night. Kept some of awake at
courtside but I have to remember that these great Bombers were
probably not even born when I graduated and they will be still
enjoying the Club 40 activities from now on. Continue the
tradition.

The 40th is over, but what an event! We had around 200 alum
filter through all the events. I'm going to go out on a limb
here and state that the '71 women were exceptional. Several were
absolutely stunning. Several of the guys were disgusting as they
hadn't aged at all RICCOBUONO, OWENS, CHAPPELL, SHAFFER, and
O'MEALLY are ageless and looked great. Back to the '71 women, now
I have to admit I'm biased, but Petra ILLIG and Peggy O'Neal were
absolutely stunning with the silver hair. They both sucked the
oxygen out of the room when they came in. Pretty dynamic. The
other '71 women that were amazing, and I'm sure I'll miss some;
were: MAKI, KRAEMER, STEIN, STANFIELD, ROE, WISE, BUSHNELL, LYSO,
MASON, MACAK, FLICKINGER, MARCUM, HODGSON, NICKLESON, POTTER,
PETERSON, HARVILLE, ZELLY, PENNICK, CHAPPELL, GRAYBEAL, KOCHER,
PETTE, RICHEY, BROWN (Jane), & BROWN (Lori), BUSHLACH, COWAN,
DAVIS, ROWE, BROUNS, SCHILDKNECHT, LOWE, COLLINGS, and several
others I'm sure I missed. I have to have missed several there
were so many exceptional women there. A special guest was Cecilia
BENNETT ('65) what a great friend and dance partner. All I can
say is go to your reunion, you'll be amazed at the friendship and
the loyalty to Col-Hi. Yeah, Col-Hi. A pox on those who changed

Your statement about preparing for what lays ahead of us, Helen,
was true for me. When I got so sick a year ago March, I had
barely prepared. I thought of old age... I thought it meant I was
getting old... I can look back and see how important for family,
friends and everything. Even found the Bomber luncheon could run
without me... I have been told by Bombers who have been long time
attending, they would take care of it. Very kind and giving as
Bombers are, always. Happened when I was in the in the hospital,
Mary JUDD ('60) took care of one.
Speaking of the The All Bomber Luncheon. The next one is Saturday
the 10th of September... same weekend as Club 40 (All Bomber
Lunch is always the second Saturday of the month and always
announced the week before and the week of.)

the start of Fall, please not yet. Hope it stays summer
though October and November.
I have not put into an entry so far. My grandson Tristan
was sworn into the ARMY last December. He graduated from

Re: Summer Break
You know how your mind works by association. When I read Rick
SMOLEN's ('62) name on the list of missing people sent in by Jeff
DeMEYER ('62) I remembered an incident I probably hadn't thought
about since it happened in early 1962.
Rick SMOLEN's dad had a great big Red 1958 Mercury Marauder
Station wagon with a 430 cubic engine, a big engine for those
days.
The day this happened, I was walking up Harris Ave, Rick, Jeff
DAWSON ('62) and someone else were in Jeff's driveway. Rick was
revving the engine on their station wagon while the rest of
us just stood and listened. It had glass pack mufflers and it
sounded real good, especially when he took his foot off the gas
and the engine slowed back down. Each time he'd rev it he'd run
it up a little higher. We all just stood there and listened... I
just loved that sound! All of a sudden... nothing, no sound at
all, the engine just stopped. I walked over as Rick kept trying
to restart it. I had a pretty good idea of what happened because
the engine spun over real fast while he was cranking it. I
remember hearing a week or so later that he not only floated the
valves, he rev'd it high enough to bend all the intakes. I don't
think Rick drove again for another full year or so after that, at
least not in his dad's car. If Stephanie remembers this incident
she might remember if it was Rick SMOLEN or not?
While writing this I thought about several things I did during
Summer break, but they didn't seem to be as amusing as Rick's
story. Probably because they happened to me, not someone else.

Just a reminder that the final date for pre-registrations is fast
approaching (August 25th).
Club 40's annual meeting/reunion/party for 2011 is September
9th & 10th. This year's party will be held once again at the
Red Lion Hotel and is "Pre-Register Only" so be sure to get your
registration sent in before August 25th (absolute final date)
Postmarks do not count so be sure to allow plenty of time for the
"snail mail". Registration forms can be found on the Club 40
website, richlandclub40.org along with an updated list of
attendees and activity calendar. The hotel had set aside a block
of 50 rooms for our group at $89.95. Even though you may have
waited until "the last minute" to make reservations at the hotel

I agree with Ray's comment about: "athletes focusing in on one
sport because they spend all their time putting their eggs in one
basket, going to camps and they can't seem to play anything on
their own unless somebody is organizing an event." I was never
great at one sport but played and enjoyed them all. My best
memories are getting together with a group of neighborhood kids
and playing at the Little League park or shooting baskets in my
back yard. With parents not around to supervise, we probably had
a few more fights, but no worse for the wear. This is another one
of the beauties of growing up in the '50s and '60s and living in
a small town.
On the down side, it was not a good time for girls in sports.
When I'm watching the Seattle Storm play, I'm amazed how far
women sports has advanced since Title IX was enacted in 1972.

I believe that "Larry F" is Larry FRITTS ('71.) Larry was himself
a Tri-Cities celebrity back in the day as one of the best high
school rock guitarists around. Last weekend Larry, along with
Gary HARMON ('71) and Gene SWIFT ('71) reunited Dog Years for a 6
song set at the class of '71 reunion and still sounded great 40
years later.

THANK YOU Todd O'MEALY ('62) and Cindy O'Mealy (Spouse) for
hosting our Potluck BBQ again at your beautiful home, and little
piece of "heaven on earth" on the Washougal River. We enjoyed
many great visits about the "good old days" growing up in
Richland, and several stories from everyone about life after
high school.
Our good friend Jan RUCKER Meyer ('55) always has some great
stories to tell. She caught us up on her mom, Helen, who is now
93 years old. It's great to have such fond memories of our Bomber
Moms and Dads who moved to Richland in the '40s.
Doug GUINN ('62) and Linda Guinn (spouse) drove down from their
place in Vader, WA. Doug took some photos, so I'll get those
sometime and share a few with you. I've learned to not post
photos in the Sandstorm until the persons in the photo have
approved. Doug and I grew up in the south end, so we had some
real old stories to tell.
Dean ANSON ('62) drove all the way from Edmonds, WA again. Dean
(Reggie) is always fun to visit with. He also wanted to check on
the project that he gave me a couple of months ago. It's a three
foot diameter, rusty saw blade and an old rusty piece of sheet
piling with a pipe welded to it, and Dean wants a table made from
the parts. I have the parts in the "round to it" section of the
shop, and soon it will be moved to the "get-r-done" section. I
asked Dean how long ago he found that piece of sheet pile, 20
years? He said, "oh no, it's been a lot longer than that." He
found in on the beach in Southern California and considered it a
"treasure." OK Dean, we'll make it an artistic masterpiece.
Bob BERGDAHL ('62) joined us driving his stock, '54 Chevy. Bob
always has interesting stories to tell. Although he remembers too
many stories of the stuff we did in high school. There are some
events that should be forgotten, Bob.
Ann ENGEL Schafer ('63) brought her son, Filip, with his sons
Brandon and little Aaden. The kids, along with Brandon's
girlfriend Becca, enjoyed playing in the river and keeping cool.
Donni CLARK Dunphy ('63) and her husband Gary joined us as well.
They have been in their new home, a beautiful log home near
Stevenson, WA, for a year now. Although Gary grew up in Los
Angeles and they lived there until a year ago, he is loving the
NW.
Our story telling ranged from alphabet houses, to horseback
riding adventures, old cars, world travel, meeting people you
know in all parts of the world, careers, grandkids, worn out body
parts and upcoming surgeries. I even got to tell my old $100,000
free cowboy boots story.
Thanks again Todd and Cindy for hosting our event. The food was
great and the stories were priceless.

My wife (NAB) is having some major problems with her back and

That's how I spent my time in typing class... typing words to

Today I stood in line for an hour to get tickets at the
Fairgrounds for "The Judds, final tour"... Usually I go to
Safeway to get early tickets, half price for seniors, but found
out this morning that they are only available "on-line"... well,
seeing as I had cash saved for these tickets and my girlfriend
had given me cash for her ticket, I figured I better just get in
line! Was even late to work, which I never am late... LOL...
gotta love the fair, I go every year!
I must be serious about country music now, since I went to
Brownsville this past week-end for the Bi-Mart Willamette Country
Music Festival... even tho it was over 90... and had to sit in
the beer garden for the better part of the day, in the shade of
the umbrellas... it was a great show... Amy Clawson, and Little
Big Town and then a great show by Blake Shelton... Lots of
traffic getting out... But well worth the drive!
Next year planning to go to the Oregon Jamboree... Rascal Flatts
playing... Yahoo!

that is the question... whether 'tis nobler... oh wait... I'm
getting carried away... ya see... I've been getting one upped
for most birthdays cuz people jump on face book and wish their
friends HB a day early... in fact... even the first birthday
guy did it to me on his Former's b-day (former sounds way more
civilized than "ex") and I mean he was several names before mine
in his wish... so here's my problem... I'm gonna take a few days
and get outa the heat and head for the central coast... now I'd
love to be going to the Dana Point area just to see ML ('63) and
her Sweety, but that's just not where I'm headed... I want nice
cool breezes after the unearthly weather we've been having...
tho I always take my gun... I never take a computer and my phone
ain't smart and I don't have one of them there cosmo iPads... so
that puts me in the awkward position of asking my best-ex to hold
a b-day wish for me till the proper day... not that she would not
do it... I just don't wanna ask... she's a total sweetheart and I
never want to take advantage... ya know? So that means the second
B-day guy hasta get his greeting with the first (no problem with
the most beautiful Ms. HOFF ('64)... I'll be back for that)...
which means either I gotta make this as long as one of MADDY's
('67) sagas or these kids may feel as though I didn't give them
the amount of time they each deserve... and they each deserve
lavish praises... one as a cool dude and a wonderful "Arteeste"
and the other as a cool dude and the collector of everything
Bomberdom and then some. But I shore do hope the unnerstan that
I wish them both the most special days ever so HAPPY BIRTHDAY to
Richard TWEDT ('64) on August 26, 2011 and to Gary BEHYMER ('64)

Don't know how long you have lived on the "wet" side; but it has
been a tradition in Oregon for the "dry" season to begin shortly
after the end of the Portland Rose Festival and end about the
time the State Fair opens in Salem. After that anything goes
weatherwise.
I think this was the reasoning behind the whifferdrill over the
Homer Davenport festival in Silverton, OR. One or two members of
the "Homer Davenport Days" committee wanted to change the date
unilaterally because of feared bad weather. After several loud
protests, and a lot of backing and filling, they abandoned ship.
A new committee was formed for what is now the "Homer Davenport
Community Festival" (same song; different verse).
At any rate, progress proceeds on the new Community Center/
Biergarten here in Mount Angel in preparation for Octoberfest
coming the weekend after the Club 40 Annual Meeting.

FYI, on Thursday I saw a mint condition copy of the Dupus Boomer
booklet and original envelope at the Uptown Richland Antique
Mall. The price was $50 -- steep, but if you wanted one badly
enough --

mall and do not know the name of the dealer who owns the booth
with the booklet.

I am wondering if any Bombers has any information on 3 nursing
homes (Rehab) in Spokane.
The Avalon on Nevada, Regency at Northpointe, or the Royal Park
Care Center. All are in the north Spokane area. My niece who is
only 47, had a massive stroke this last month. She will be moved
to one of these 3 places. I find information on line, but they
kinda say what they want you to know. I did find a web site for
ratings, but still unsure.
Any help will be appreciated

Re: Dupus Boomer book that Stephanie DAWSON Janicek ('60) saw
Our family were friends with the Donnells – My dad, Dick
Avedovech worked with Dick Donnell in the late '40s early '50s
and I had a copy of Dick's Dupus Boomer book for many years.
Unfortunately there were too many moves and much was lost, but I
still remember several of the cartoons, one especially with Dupus
watching from his pre-fab porch as an Arab walked his camel
across his front sand lawn.

Thanks for the note about the copy of Dupus Boomer that is
available in Uptown Richland. Collectors should watch out to see
if it is an original or a later printing from a few years ago.
The CREHST Museum (in Richland) MAY have copies of the later
printing available at reasonable prices? IF you are searching for
an original they do show up on EBAY.com every once in awhile for
$15 to $25.

Growing up we lived on Hunt Street (A house) and behind us is
where Dick Donnell lived. He passed away when I was still quite
young but I do remember the cartoon books he published. Dufus was
a lovable sort with pretty poor coordination. Like the cartoon
where he discovers that the name of the Coke bottle factory is on
the bottom of the bottle and pours his soda on the ground looking
at it. He also braved many a dust storm and huge tumble weeds.
Mr. Donnell was a really nice man who put up with us running
through his yard to get to the river and playing football on the
neighbor's lawn with his lawn being the end zone.
I would be interested in knowing how much you would like for
these books; I believe I have a couple myself and would be
interested in expanding my meager collection.
