I was pleased to see your comments on some or our
post-school days and our singing escapades. I was
shocked, very shocked, that there was an implication
that we were "chugging" a few at the same time. I think
I liked your banjo ukes the best but I do remember
fondly baritone uke, the "Dickie Lee". Didn't know that
was the reason that you proposed to the fair Carol
Tyner though.
But I wanted to comment on Dick's parents, Rasty
and Leone Roberts. They adopted (so to speak) a group
of us after Dick ('49) and Carol ('54) had married and
moved to California . They would invite those of us
still in Richland (late fifties to early sixties) to
their house for parties and a good time was had by us
all. (It also kept us off the streets). I don't think
we were doing much singing at those parties though.
Great memories.

Re: John Wayne
In "The Wake of the Red Witch" The Duke was killed
when his airline broke while diving for the gold
bullion. This was, of course, sometime after he killed
the guy in the rubber octopus suit.
In "The Sands of Iwo Jima" he was shot by a
Japanese sniper shortly after the second flag raising
on Mt. Suribachi
In "The Alamo", a Mexican lance through the chest
did the trick.
In "Fighting Seabees" Duke took out a Japanese
invasion force by driving a bulldozer into a large
fuel tank.
In "The Cowboys" he was shot by a rustler.
In "The Shootist" he was killed during a gun-fight;
but Richie Cunningham (or was it Opie) revenged his
death.
In "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" Marion Micheal
Morrison died of natural causes off screen, so it
shouldn't really count.
And, if memory serves, was he also killed at the
end of "The Sons of Katie Elder"?
That, as they say, is a wrap (I hope)

I have been sitting back and reading for several
weeks and finally decided I would put my 2 cents worth
in. It is so comforting to have this Alumni Sandstorm.
Even when I am home on the beautiful Columbia I look
forward to each day's entries. So when we are traveling

refuge. Thank You Maren and ol' Bomber mates.

One of my best friends ever lives in Colfax. I'm
sure you know them, Bernie and Donna Tyacke. They lived
by us for awhile in Kennewick, and our kids were great
friends. If you know them maybe you could talk to them
and get me their email address. I sure would appreciate
it.
To: Brad Upton (74)
I know you probably don't remember me, however I
do remember your family and especially your mother. We
lived next door to you and in the same "A" house as
Donna Bowers ('63). My mother put together a cookbook
this christmas of all her family favorites and gave it
out to all her kids, grandkids and great grandkids. In
the cookbook she has two recipes that she got from your
mother. It is such a great little history book, because
she has many recipes from the cooks at schools and old
friends of the family. It sure was a warm and fuzzy
reminder of dinners around the old dinner table.
Re: Thyroid Disease
I really hate to get started on this nasty subject,
but, I was in the Fred Hucthison cancer research study
on selected Tri-City graduates, I don't know exactly
how we were all finally selected. But they found 2
large tumors and they aspirated them and found them
both benign.
I was diagnosed with Hoshimotos Thyroiditis. It has
been very difficult problem to keep it regulated. It
sure makes one feel as if they are a little crazy and
agitated. So my dear friends do make sure to have your
thyroid tests run.
Last year my hubby and I were able to travel with
his consulting job from the Tri-Cities to McAllen, TX,
then to Houston, TX then onto Edwards Air force base in
Lancaster, CA. Then we came home for the reunion, which
was great fun. Then we went down to Carmel, CA, then
onto Temecula, CA, then Ontario, CA. The last week of
November we drove home for the December holidays. On
the 15th of February we hit the road again and we came
across the gorgeous snowy Salt Lake City, UT, Rockies
Mountains, Vail, CO, Denver, CO, and over to Kansas
City, MO. We will be here another week and then on the
the 14th we will drop down south and head west to
Anahiem, CA for a job with Disney.
From there who knows were we will travel. We are
hoping for an assignment in New Zealand. Wow how
great!! This is such a vagabond life. I sometimes wonder
how well I will do when we retire and finally decide to
live in one place. Will my feet stop itching? The only
state we have not been to is Maine.
Go Bombers Go!!! On to State!!!!

Brad,
I think that there are a couple of views to this
"balding and receding" hairline that I would like to
share.
#1 Grass doesn't grow on a busy street and #2 I
believe that it is called a horse shoe shaped haircut.
Either way, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Look at all of the movie stars that finally got the
clue that losing their hair is not the worst thing
that can happen to them, and they are finally going
"au natural." Sean Connery is just as sexy as ever
with less hair. I saw Tom Jones not to long ago and
he is showing a little more skin, but boy is he sexy.
I could go on and on, but bottom line is no matter
how a person changes physically, they can never change
who they are.

We had air conditioning in our "B" house. When I

we converted to electric heat, we put in central air
and used the existing duct work.
How many of you recall as kids the temperature
could still be 100 at midnight, but the humidity was
less than 5%? When I was visiting last summer that is
one thing that has really changed and that is the
humidity, it sure is a lot stickier than it used to be.

I've got a funny story that happened in French
class my younger sister and I were in taught by Gerard
Labrecque in fall of '83 or spring of '84. (anyone
remember that guy?, he retired in '85, I think our
class wore him out!!)
Anyway, Mr. Labrecque was having the class make
up sentences out loud starting with Vous le vous (very
roughly translated 'you do this') so, when it got to my
little sister's turn, she looked Mr. Labrecque straight
in the eye and said, very innocently "Vous le vous
coucher avec moi?" (will you sleep with me?) The poor
guy almost swallowed his teeth, and had a coughing fit.
Anybody out there remember this, or other incidents

Re: Bomber Hoops Report ~ March 1, 2002,
Regional Semifinal - Richland versus Ferris
Ferris has lost only three games all year. They
won the GSL league, but lost to Shadle in the District
Tournament. Ferris starts Josh Parker, 6'2", 12.5
points per game, Marcus Clift, 6'1", 10.1 points per
game, Sean Mallon 6'9", 24.2 points per game, Adam
Jackson 6'3", 4.3 points per game and Adam Seaburg
6'6", 11.2 points per game.
The Saxons won the tip and went right to Mallon in
the key, 2 points. This guy is so big and athletic, he
will score. How do we keep the ball from him? Hilgert
come right back and challenged Mallon and sinks a
bucket to tie the game with 7:27 remaining. Mallon was
fouled and made both free-throws and followed with
another three footer to give Ferris the lead at 6-2
with 6:40 to play. Hilgert drove the lane again and hit
a deuce to close the gap to 2. Mallon made one of two
from the charity strip and Frisbee came back to bury a
trey to tie the game at 7 with 4:12 to play. Mallon
again made one of two from the foul line, but York
followed with a driving two and a hack. Foul shot good.
Bombers 10-8. Bussman got a great look and buried a
trey with 2:33 to play. Bombers 13-8. Clift made one of
two from the line and York nailed his first trey. An
offensive rebound and put back by Mallon made the first
quarter score Bombers 16-11. Getting the picture about
Mallon? He is going to Gonzaga next year.
The second quarter started with Buck getting a
driving shot in the paint and Frisbee getting a feed
from Bussman for a bucket. Bombers 20-11. Mallon got
another short shot in the paint followed by another in
the paint. Bombers 20-16 with 3:33 to play. York found
the net with his second trey of the game, but Mallon
came back with a hoop and a hack for three points.
Bombers 23-19 with 2:49 to play. Frisbee drove the
baseline for two and Clift hit a baseline jumper for a
bucket. Frisbee made one of two foul shots and Johnson
also made one of two from the charity stripe. Bombers
27-21 with 1:35 to play. Hart hit one from the foul
line out of two, but Frisbee came back with two free
throws to make the score 29-22 with :53 to play in the
half. Ferris missed a shot, but Mallon muscled the
rebound back to end the second period scoring. Bombers
29-24.
The third quarter has been good to the Bombers as
of late and fans anxiously awaited the beginning of the
second half. Mallon started with a shot in the paint
with 5:57 to play. York came back with his third trey
to make the score 32-26 Bombers with 4:35 to play in
the third. Seaburg hit a deuce, Parker drove the key
for a bucket, Clift nailed a trey, then he hit another
trey, Mallon made one of two from the line and finished
by hammering home a trey to finish the third period
scoring. Ferris 40-32. The Bombers scored 3 to the
Saxons 16. Ferris ran off 14 straight to end the
quarter. The Bombers had three turnovers, had some good
looks, but the ball would not fall.
The fourth quarter started with Frisbee hitting a
bucket, but Seaburg came back with a pair of baskets.
Ferris 44-34 with 6:02 to play. York hit a deuce, but
Sloan responded with a deuce at the other end. Hilgert
found the net from the key and Buck hit a trey with
3:50 to play. Ferris 46-41. The next 8 points belonged
to Ferris. Seaburg got a bucket, then another, Parker
hit two free-throws, then Parker drove for a hoop and
suddenly it was Ferris 54-41 with 1:07 to play. Buck
hit his second trey of the quarter at the 1:01 mark.
Ferris 54-44. Parker made one of two from the foul line
and Buck came back with his third trey of the quarter.
Buck stole the ball and hit his fourth trey of the
quarter and was fouled. Foul shot missed. The Bombers
got the rebound and worked it around to Buck. He put
up a good looking three and was pounded to the ground.
Big time foul, but no call from the Spokane Ref. It was
Ferris 55-50. Parker was fouled immediately and Coach
Streufert got a technical "calmly" discussing the
previous no call when Buck was hammered. It could have
been 55-52. Parker made the two foul shot and both
technicals to end the game. Ferris 59-50.
Ferris made 15 of 27 free-throws while the Bombers
made 5 of 10. The Bombers were 9 of 22 from inside the
arc and 9 of 28 from outside the arc. They were 5 of 10
from the foul line, grabbed only 4 offensive boards, 21
defensive boards, had 7 steals, assisted on 11 baskets,
were whistled for 20 fouls, committed 8 turnovers and
blocked one shot.
The Bombers were led in scoring by York and Buck
with 14, Frisbee had 12, 6 for Hilgert, 3 for Bussman,
and 1 for Johnson. Buck grabbed 8 rebounds and Frisbee
had 5. Mallon had 24 for the Saxons.
The Lady Bombers defeated the Gonzaga Bull Pups by
22 and will face Pasco tomorrow at 12:30 with the
winner advancing to State.
The Bombers will play Ike at 2:30 with the winner
advancing to state.

Re: SPAM filtering
To: Carol Black Foster ('48)
The primary secret on Hotmail is to establish the
account and unchecking the "Hotmail member directory"
and "Internet white pages" options (the default is to
have them checked). Hotmail claims they do not publish
email addresses in it but that has not been my
experience.
I am serving my church distributing prayer requests
via e-mail to a selected list of people. With the first
address I established at Hotmail, I didn't uncheck
those options. Within an *hour* I was getting spam and
it has only gotten worse with some of the grossest
material being offered. I've now established a second
account and made sure I unchecked both options. I've
been running that new account for a few months and have
only had one or two pieces of spam.
Another option is to get an Amerion mail account
(http://www.amerion.com/). They own a number of ISPs.
We use televar.com for example. It costs a little but
Amerion provides a spam/virus filter on their systems.
You can tune the filter and even add specific addresses
or sites to an acceptable list. I'm really glad to have
that service.
http://Spamcop.net has similar capability and it
works with your ISP. That means you have to have an ISP
so there isn't a savings there. But they can provide
the spam filtering you need.
Perhaps, the answer with Hotmail is to set up
another account (unchecked) and another until you find
an address that doesn't get the spam and use that one.
A little tedious but possibly effective. I one of the
accounts I use on our prayer network has been in
operation for a couple years with (virtually) no
trouble.
I'm sure there are other providers out there that
offer similar services but these are the ones I know
about.

Chuck, thanx. I am visiting my son in Lynnwood. My

RE: Lexington vs. Encino
Thanks to all on this site for your input on my
relocation decision. By actual vote Lexington was the
clear winner by a 4 - 1 margin. After visits to both
locations, and much consideration, my decision is...
NEITHER. Both cities have their good points, but
neither compare (in my humble opinion) to the Great
Northwest. Sooooo, I've conned a company into keeping
me around Seattle for a while longer. And even though
Krispy Kremes is just down the hill from me, the
thought of being more than a 3 1/2 hour drive from the
Spudnut Shop was the deciding factor. So... Hi-HO... on
Monday I grab my lunch pail, and off to work I go.

Glad to hear the update on Harry Walker... if I had

that Jordan won't play in the Seattle game? Got any
Mariners tickets? Call me when you get here... I just
dusted off my golf clubs.

Odd... and I thought I was naive as a kid... though
I will say it never occurred to me either, that anything
had anything to do with what different parents made, or
race; to me everyone was pretty much the same...
Now for those who are still under the misconception
that David Rivers ('65) is an only child... he ain't.
Same parents, different personalities... one being
very out going, one not too (at least until he gets
comfortable with people). One is always in the
forefront, one's always in the background... One is
camera shy since a kid, one definitely isn't... one
signs everything, one doesn't... one's always been a
clothes horse and well groomed, while the other (as a
kid) would put on pretty much whatever came to hand and
could never seem to find his comb... that being the case,
it's no wonder no one ever saw me with him. :o)

Re: A/C
Though my brother was much better traveled about
town after we moved to Van Giesen... even I knew about
air conditioning, having learned about it when a friend
moved to West Richland on the Yakima. I had the
opportunity to ride the bus to his home on a few
Fridays and stay over. It was a wonderment to hear the
sound of "something" above whir and know that this
cooling air would be coming out of this little hole
with vents. After that quite a few of my friends'
parents put in air or built new homes with it and the
novelty was gone. It was the swamp coolers that threw
me, I simply thought some peoples homes were cooler and
therefore a joy to be in... until I was looking at
pictures of the late 40s and saw swamp coolers on the
side of some of the houses. It never occurred to me that
other people had them, but then I spent more time out
doors than in. When I asked our mom about them, I got
the story. Now a lot of things got passed on because
mom was QUITE "frugal"... But our lack of even swamp
coolers wasn't related to funding, it was simply that
as our dad spent most of his time in buildings with
some form of cooling or other... it never occurred to
him that we might need or enjoy it. When dad was in
Vegas while we lived on Hunt, mom had a small swamp
cooler (which I thought was an "air conditioner") in
the living room... OK, I never checked to see what one
LOOKED like... spent some time sitting in front of that
at night. But our dad carried the same feelings on the
matter down to Vegas with him. We moved into a house
with a swamp cooler, WOW. Now here swamp coolers were
quite functional... until the humidity levels went up.
But they didn't get air, until he hit retirement time
and realized just how uncomfortable it was to be
without.
So that's the story... and here I thought my bother
was always so cool and sophisticated, never occurred
to me he could be as naive on some things as I was... :o)
Be safe all...

Your French class story reminded me of a similar
incident when I was substitute teaching in Spokane a
couple of years ago. It was Valentine's Day, and a
student received a rose or whatever gift West Valley
High School was selling along with the message, "Volley
vows couture aver Maui ce soiree." He asked me if I spoke
French, and I said, "MIAs au, Joe parole un pee francais."
(Just like I lernt from my French teacher at Chief Jo,
can't remember her name.) Then he showed me the note.
Naturally, we hadn't learned the word for bed back in
junior high school in the 70s... too dangerous! So I
looked it over and said, "Well, I'm not sure about the
word coucher, but she's asking you to go somewhere with
her tonight." Well, the light bulb certainly lit up over
his head. He understood exactly what she was saying,
while I was left in the dust. After thinking it over
awhile longer and comparing the word coucher with the
English word couch, I even figured it out. Am I getting
old or what!?

I am printing out all the suggestions and am going

It really frustrates me to push Discard and the

I have taken my name off one site, which makes me
nervous since I have heard that once you do that, they
sell your address to everybody in the world. Except
some of these sites don't even have a place to remove

One of these messages starts with the name carol

Re: Bomber Basketball March 3, 2002
Richland versus Eisenhower
The Bombers and the Cadets played in the 2:30 PM
Consolation final game with the winner going to State
and loser just going home. The Bombers were coming off
a 59-50 loss to Ferris, while the Cadets were coming of
a 76-60 win over Wenatchee.
The Bombers won the opening tip and after a slow
start York found Arthurs under the basket for an easy
two. Hilgert hit a fade away in the paint to give the
Bombers a 4-0 lead. Buck drove the baseline and hit a
deuce to extend the lead to 6 with 4:40 to play. So far
Ike had committed 2 turnovers, two fouls and missed
four shots, but Curfman hit a runner in the key to make
the score 6-2 with 3:24 to play. That would be the last
point for the Cadets in the first stanza. Bussman
buried a trey from the corner with 2:11 to play and
Frisbee drove the baseline for a twisting bucket. First
quarter Bombers 11-2.
Frisbee started the second quarter with a short
jumper, but Groth was fouled and converted both foul
shots. Bombers 13-4 with 6:44 in the half. York netted
a long trey and Groth came back with a pair of free-
throw to make the score 16-6 with 6:14 to play. York
drilled another trey to give the Bombers a 13 point
lead with 5:55 in the half. Rasmussen nailed a drive in
the key, but Hilgert answered with an offensive board
and bucket. Bombers 21-8 with 4:32 remaining. Rasmussen
got one of two from the foul line, followed it with a
deuce and Groth hit two free throws with 2:45 to play.
Bombers 21-13. York tallied a deuce and Roybal put back
an offensive rebound. Buck found the net from beyond
the arc and Johnson made one of two from the charity
stripe. Bombers 27-17 with :46 to play. Curfman
finished the scoring in the half by hitting a bucket
with :04 to play. At the half, Bombers 27-17.
Curfman hit a deuce to start the third period and
Groth found the net twice form the foul line. Bombers
27-21 with 7:23 in the third. York hit a driving deuce,
but Roybal (at 6'9") got an easy bucket to keep the
lead at 6 for the Bombers. Buck drained two from the
foul line, but Curfman knocked down a trey, Groth got a
hoop and a hack, foul shot good. Bombers 31-29 with
3:39 in the third. Buck hit one of two from the foul
line and Groth got two more foul shots to drop. Bombers
32-31 with 3:15 to play. Johnson hit a bucket for the
Bombers, was fouled, and made the foul shot. Frisbee
drove the baseline, hit the bucket and also got fouled.
Foul shot good. Bombers 38-31 with 2:09 in the third.
Groth hit a driving bucket, but Buck hit two more free-
throws. Bombers 40-33 with 1:33 to play. Roybal found
the basket twice from the paint to end the third period
scoring. Bombers 40-37.
This period would decide who goes to STATE! Groth
hit only one of two from the charity strip with 7:49 in
the final quarter. Bombers 40-38. York missed a shot,
Hilgert fought for the rebound, which ended up on the
floor. Hilgert pushed it to the corner to Bussman who
calmly sank a trey to make the score 43-38 with 7:35 in
the game. Groth hit his third field goal of the game to
make it Bombers 43-40 with 6:33 in the game. Frisbee
hit two free throws at the 6:29 mark. Guzman made one
of two from the charity stripe and Groth hit his fourth
field goal of the game to make the score 45-43 Bombers.
Frisbee was fouled and calmly found the net twice.
Bombers 48-43 with 3:21 to play. While in-bounding the
ball, the Bombers were called for an offensive foul,
but no shots for the Cadets. Groth was fouled driving
to the hoop and converted both foul shots. Again the
Bombers were called for a pushing foul on the inbound
pass, but this time the Cadets got to shoot. Groth hit
two more. Bombers 48-47 with 2:05 to play. After a
Richland turnover, Guzman was fouled and hit only one
free throw. The game was tied at 48 with 2:04 to play.
Another turnover by the Bombers gave the ball to the
Cadets. After a time out, the Cadets were confident to
run the clock with 1:54 remaining. The ball stayed in
the hands of Groth for the most part. Buck was guarding
him with 4 fouls. Each time Groth came out to the top
of the key, Buck inched a little closer. Groth dribbled
around the top of the key and then drove the sideline
toward the baseline. A whistle. A five-second call on
Groth. Bomber ball with 16 seconds left in game. In-
bounding from back court, Buck went down in the paint
and drew three defenders, Bussman in-bounded the ball
to York. York passed to Frisbee and back to York. Buck
hustled toward the top of the key, drawing two players
with him and leaving a gaping hole for York to drive in
for a shot. The ball swished through the net with :02
remaining. Bombers to State. Final Bombers 50-48.
The Bombers were 12 of 32 from inside the arc and 5
of 13 from beyond the arc. They converted 11 of 14 foul
shots, grabbed 30 rebounds, had seven steals, seven
assists, committed 21 fouls, 15 turnovers and blocked
three shots. The Bombers were led in scoring by York
and Frisbee with 12 apiece, Buck had 10, 6 for Bussman,
4 for Hilgert and Johnson and 2 for Arthurs. Hilgert
snared 8 boards and Buck grabbed 6. Buck and Hilgert
each had 3 steals and Hilgert blocked 2 shots with Buck
getting the other block. Groth had 24 for the Cadets
(16 of them from the foul line). No other Cadet was in
double figures. Say goodnight Ike!
The Lady Bombers also won in the consolation finals
and will be making the trek to State.
Next game will be in Tacoma on Wednesday against an
unnamed opponent for both teams.

Who is that guy posing as my brother? The truth is,
that once upon a time, there was a happy family with
their only child. Then came a knock at the door and
there in a basket was a little baby boy. Now I had a
lot of strange pets in my day... Allen Green ('65) got
a salamander from me once and Mrs. Brewer still talks
about the white rat I pawned off on Rod ('65).
My Mom often would NOT let me take in strays... but
with this kid in the basket, she made an exception (I
really wanted a magpie). Did everything I could think
of to lose this kid. At two he walked in front of a car
at Haines and GWWay. He was thrown completely over the
car but was ok... he tried to say that Billie Lipke's
grandmother pushed him in the street... then one day,
Allen Green talked him into holding an air rifle full
of dirt to his eye and pulling the trigger... then
talked him into pulling the fire alarm... none of these
things worked... Finally, one day on the way home from
Portland, he got out of the car and wandered off
(something he did all the time... and my folks always
made me go find him... As if!). Well, I'd had it...
when the folks got back into the car at the gas station
I just mummed up! Many miles later, when there was no
sound of fighting in the back seat, they noticed he
wasn't there... darned if they didn't actually go back
and get him... my dumb luck!
So I guess it's true... I do have a little brother,

He was also one of the biggest war wimps in the

Re: Hotmail & SPAM
Hotmail does provide ways to keep the spam separate
from the good stuff. You have to take several steps in
order to achieve the results you want. Essentially you
must use the most "exclusive" filter. In other words,
if the sender isn't on your own address list (including
from certain other addresses) the e-mail will go into
the "Junk Mail" folder. You open that folder and look
at the address and subject lines and find something
from someone you know (I have this problem with one or
two correspondents who keep changing e-mail accounts).
Those you can separate out by indicating they are not
"junk mail"; for the rest, hit the "empty folder"
button. Changing identities can sometimes help, but
they can also confuse friends. No matter which way you
look at it, Hotmail does seem to attract more flies
than other e-mail servers. Guess those folks just like
anything Bill does.

Well, the State Tournament draw has been made and,
frankly, Bombers have been presented with a serious
challenge. A seriously serious challenge. The other
three teams in our little corner of the tournament --
Garfield, Shadle Park, and Lincoln -- are currently
ranked first, fifth, and second (if I am not mistaken
each of the three teams was ranked first at some point
during the season). We play Lincoln on Wednesday at
2:00pm. If we survive the first two games we will
become the odds on favorite to win the whole thing.
Gosh, it could be a rerun of Wa-Hi's 1999 State Title,
right down to the opponent in the final: Ferris. Go
Green!
I don't follow girls hoops so I have no feeling
how they'll do.
Anyway, you can see the complete brackets (and a
bunch of other stuff) at
http://wiaa.com/Athletics/basketball/postseason.htm.
They say that defense wins championships and right
now Bombers are playing pretty decent defense. Watching
Travis Buck and Derek Groth play cat (Buck) and mouse
(Groth) at the tail end of the Eisenhower game was
amazing; Travis pounced at exactly the right moment to
force the 5-second turnover that led to our winning
possession. It was a thing of beauty between two
excellent players. Earlier in the game John Tierney
applied some excellent defense on Groth as well; John
must have some interest in textiles (he, along with BJ
Arthurs, are the clothes horses of the team) because he
was seen to be attempting to remove -- physically
remove -- Groth's shirt. Tough game, hoops.

Duhhhhh, I'm reminded of a time that I read on the wall

Re: The Duke
I've seen lots of mention regarding the "Duke" here
in the Alumni Sandstorm lately, so thought I would toss
in my two cents worth.
In the fall of 1971 I was working off duty part
time jobs (from Tucson Police Dept.) We mostly did
crowd control, keeping the gawkies back from the movie
sets far enough to satisfy the director. Often times
some of the actors would pass the time with us
uniformed officers, asking about local restaurants,
places to go, things to see while in Tucson. John Wayne
got into such a conversation with a TPD Sgt., one thing
led to another, and the next morning the Sgt. John
Wayne and myself were off to a dove hunt out by
Picatcho Peak, near the old stock yards of Redrock.
We had a GREAT hunt. As I recall we all limited
out. After the shotguns were put away, John pulled out
a fifth of Wild Turkey 101 (which was kept in a foam
rubber cut out inside his shotgun case). I opened the
playmate to find a couple of cool Falstaffs, and we
proceeded to limit out again. A great memory, now I
wish I would have asked for an autograph, but,
considered that too tacky at the time. I did ask him
what he preferred to be called, and his response "Well,
not late to dinner." Then he added, "Just John is
fine."
He had a ranch up by Springerville, AZ... The
Circle M, or something like that. His son has it now
of course, and I heard through the grapevine that it
was up for sale.
John was a good shot, a good sport, and a lot of
fun to be with. He had some hilarious tales to tell,
especially with a snoot full. We were all going to "do
it again", however, somehow we just never seemed to get
it all together again.
I've reminisced long enough, now I'm outta here.

Re: The Duke's walk
Ken,
You're partially correct on The Duke's walk. He
actually copied it from another Washington State
export, Yakima Cannuck. He was a stunt guy and double
for a lot of actors. He died not to long ago, I think
he was closing in on 100. Story has it he was following
Yakima all over the place when he asked him what he was
doing he said "I like the way you walk, I'm copying
it." and the rest is history.
I met the Duke once while stationed in southern CA.
He was in Newport Beach, CA and I just bumped into him.
He was pretty reclusive until he found out I was from
Washington. He said "one of his role models was from
there"... I guessed it was Yakima and he just smiled
and walked off.
He did have small feet for his size.

Re: Spam email
I've been reading a lot of entries lately
concerning unwanted email or "spam". I agree that
about the best you can do is just delete it if you
don't recognize who it's from.
However, I thought I read some place that there
was a movement under way to change the designation of
certain websites.
For example, regular websites are designated as
"FillInTheBlank.COM"... here the ".COM" part is regular
"commercial" or try-to-sell-you-something" sites.
The ones designated "FillInTheBlank.ORG" usually
are sites soliciting moneys or donations or are helpful
organization type sites.
The article I read wanted to change the
designations to what they really are. Porno or smut
would have to change to "FillInTheBlank.SEX" or ".XXX".
There are other examples and I'm sure you guys can
come up with some of your own, but you get the general
picture.
Has anyone else read anything along these lines?
If so, does anyone know if there has been any other
articles or action on this subject? Just wondering.

Thank you Mike Clowes, aka Bob Carlson ('54) for
reminding us that the great war hero, John Wayne, never
served. You say it was his small feet but I always
thought it was because he was a footballer from USC.
That was an automatic exemption status. Ronnie Reagan
was more creative. He went in the service and was able
to wear a uniform and join the American Legion later
on. However, he never got far from the camera, making
disease and morale movies for GI consumption. He did
become something of hero later on, ratting on his
fellow Actor Guild buddies before the House Unamerican
Activities Committee, along with fellow rats, Robert
Taylor and Adolph Menjou. Some that they fingered
were communists, others were not. That made little

O, if it were so easy, Dan! I've been doing a lot
of "research" some of this stuff. Conversing with a few
spam filtering people and e-mail experts. Virtually all
of the pornographic spam I have seen has forged
headers.
That means there is very little in the message that
will tell you a real e-mail address, or domain name of
the sender. There may be some clues in the full header
as to country of origin (list available at:
http://www.iana.org/cctld/cctld-whois.htm).
The best you can do is to find one of the sites
that can trace the IP addresses in the header and see
if any of them are real. Spam Cop does that for you if
you want to attack directly. Then with either Spam Cop
or some other intermediary, you can send the SysAdmin
an abuse report.
It has some dangers however. First, the pornographer
may be running his own server. Therefore, no action
will result as to shutting down the account and you
have communicated directly with the spammer. Secondly,
most often the abuse report should include the message
and all the header (technical stuff not normally
appearing to the user) in order for the Admin to know
where it was from. This exposes your address to the
Admin (unless you can mung your address somehow - see
http://members.aol.com/emailfaq/mungfaq.html). That
also means the pornographer may find out who you are.
In our situation, I believe we were hacked by a
vengeful spammer. He got through our software firewall
to do it. We have since installed a hardware firewall
and are now doing ok but we lost a lot of software
pieces and are still suffering from a couple of the
losses (haven't had time to completely reformat our
disk and reload everything).
By the way, it is instructive to see the country
codes in the headers. I started examining those on all
our spam. Many of the messages were from off-shore
servers. Particularly interesting were the messages
about refinancing mortgages. Do you really want to send
your initial financial information to somebody running
a server in places like Romania, China, Russia,
Czechoslovakia or Korea? Check it out.

Re: Becoming a Comedian
Okay, Mike and Diane, you're just as funny as me
and you want me to get you a gig. I'll get you a gig
like those I got to do a long time ago. Here's what
we'll do. We'll go out on the prairies of Alberta and
pull into some small little depressed farming community
where Wednesday night at the only bar is "Comedy
Night." Everyone inside is wearing sweats and greasy
ball hats (I'm talking the ladies, too). They'll be
liquored up because what else is there to do? They'll
be bitter because they live there and they know they'll
always live there. They resent the comedians because
after the show they get to leave town and pursue their
dreams. Their dreams didn't pan out in Junior Hockey.
The stage will be two picnic tables pushed together
with a piece of plywood covering the top. The spotlight
will be a car headlight inside a Folger's can. Pool
tables and dart boards will be busy and there's a
hockey game on the big screen... it's the middle of the
third period and the score is tied. It's almost
show time. The owner, for some unknown reason, wants
the show to start on time. You plead with him to let
the hockey game finish. Nope. The owner walks past the
dart boards and unplugs them in the middle of the game,
turns off the lights above the pool tables and turns
off the big screen TV. He flips on the "spotlight" and
grabs the microphone and faces the very hostile, drunk,
Canadians and yells, "hey you guys, SHUT UP, hey you
guys, SHUT UP, it's time for comedy... the first guy
is an American," that's your intro and now it's your
turn to be funny. Enjoy!

Nice to see the Bombers at state again. My son's
BBall team (Inglemoor) lost to Garfield by two for the
chance to be the second seed from Kingco. If Richland
and Garfield both win in the first round, they'll meet
Thursday March 7, at 5:00. I see by your calendar that
you're scheduled at the Emerald Queen that same day. A
little Bomber Basketball followed by some entertainment
by a hometown boy. Sounds like a great evening. What
time is your show or shows? I've already talked to
several people about going to the game and then
catching your act.
Go Bombers!!!

I've got that same rant about my life in the
nuclear business. Except I didn't pursue any dreams and
do what I wanted, so I got that going for me (to quote
Bill Murray in Caddyshack).
I wanted to say to any Bomber basketball fans
from any era that I listened to that game on Saturday
(should have been there), and it was a great last
second shot that brought a lot of memories back. So
many games, so many wins, so much fun. The memory of
being in Seattle, watching Steve Davis ('72RIP) throw
the ball in the air as the last 5 seconds ticked off.

Re: State tourney
What memories I have of the state tournament. I
remember back 30 years ago this year when the Bombers
beat Hazen in the final. This talented team consisted
of Pat Hoke (72), Steve Neill (72), Dean Thompson (72),
Dick Cartmell (72), Jim Kasey (72), Brian Coyne (72)
and my brothers Steve Davis (72RIP) and Mike Davis (74).
(Not real sure why Mike was on this roster. I was only
8 years old at the time, but all I remember him doing
was handing out water bottles and towels to the guys
that actually played.)
I was pretty much hooked on basketball after that.
Watching Mike Neill (75) completely rewrite the record
books in '73, '74 and '75 was an amazing sight. If you
never got a chance to watch him play, you really missed
out. He was without any doubt the greatest Bomber to
ever step foot in Art Dawald gym. His debut as a Bomber
in '73 he knocked down 40 points. (A record that still
stands)
Then of course the 1979 state champions,
Brian Kellerman (79), Bob Kennedy (79), Mark Hoke (79),
Dennis Soldat (81), Steve Chalcraft (79), and
Larry Davis (80). I followed this team all the way to
the state finals against Pasco. My friend David Keller (82)
and I got to be the kids that sat underneath the hoop
and wipe up the sweat and blood off the floor. (Little
did we know 2 years later we would be playing in the
state tournament against Mercer Island.)
Wish I had the time to make it up this year. They
really have an exciting team to watch. I really
wouldn't count them out just yet. With Travis Buck
on your team anything can happen. He really is an
outstanding athlete. With Bussman and York coming back
for two more years you'll probably see the Bombers atop
of the big nine.
The tradition continues - Now, GO YOU BOMBERS!

Well one of the great things about working from
home is being able to do stuff during the day. I'm
going tomorrow (Wednesday) to watch both the
Boys (2:00 p.m.), and the Girls (5:00 p.m.). After that
we'll see.
I was able to go watch the wrestling state
championships, but by the time I got there Richland was
pretty much finished. It was still fun to watch good
ole' collegiate style grappling though, and I ran into
Rudy Nicacio (83), his son (almost a man), and a couple
of his brothers (sorry Luis). It was a good time.

Your initial entry into the Sandstorm in regard to
the item in the Washington Post directed at the war
against SPAM was timely and terrific! You are in the
right place to get us information on all this stuff and
keep us updated. As I've mentioned to you before, a lot
of similar information can be gleaned from the "Tech
TV" channel on cable TV, if you are fortunate to
receive that, but if not, you can go to their website,
specifically http://www.techtv.com/techtv/ or
http://www.techtv.com/callforhelp where you can find
answers to many of the FAQ regarding the subject. The
other day on the TV version we were referred to the
"Spam News" site which is: http://www.spamnews.com and
this offers many links to "stopping the madness!"
Also, yesterday Luana Ivers Portch ('52) was here
to view some of the links to our 50th class reunion
which I have recently installed on our site... She was
also surprised and interested to see the availability
of the Richland Bomber Alumni ring which -- not being
online as yet -- she had no idea existed. Fortunately,
my own Alumni ring (which was a Christmas present to me
from a dozen friends/classmates/family in honor of our
50th) had just arrived a few days before, so I had a
LIVE one to show off! (It fits perfectly and is
absolutely awesome -- all of the information that they
managed to get into such small spaces and the "Mushroom
Cloud" that is 3D embedded into the green stone is
really something!)
Luana felt that many of our alumni friends who are
not online and unable to view the All Richland Bomber
links might be missing out on a lot of offers and
information on this kind of thing. I printed her out
copies of the following links (which she will try to
get into the Club 40 newsletter). She suggests that any
of you who have friends not online do the same, so that
orders may be placed by mail...

Re: Spam
Sorry that spam message went to all of you earlier
this week. It was meant for Maren and I hit the wrong
button in my address book. However, the software I was
referring to is "Spamkiller". You can download it from
the Web and use it free for 30 days. Then the cost is
$29.95. It has multiple filters that can be set for
Subject and/or Content as well as addresses. I have not
tried it as I have not had a significant spam problem,
with only 1-2 a day. As I understand it when it kills a
spam message it holds it on a server for a period of
time and you can look at it to be sure it is not
something you would want to keep. After some period of
time, or on command it dumps them to oblivion. My
partner was getting 150 to 180 per week and now rarely
sees one get through. We are always online on a T-1
line at our office and you can hear the sound of a
gunshot when it kills a spam.

am guessing... oh and as to the controversy of being
the bombers... I find it rather weird, I am now an

Re: Alumni Sandstorm SPAM & Porno
For what it may be worth, I have several e-mail
accounts, and on this one, the one which I receive the
Sandstorm, I get about 12 junk mail (aka spam messages)
to each sandstorm entry. On this account I do very
little business any more. Mostly it is there to get the
Sandstorm Entries; I have other primarily business
accounts, which have remained remarkably primarily
business accounts (I have to deal with very little junk
e-mail). I have never had a porno e-mail (thank god -
now I probably will, huh?). I don't know if this is
because I spend very little time cruising the internet
where I might drop my so-called 'cookies' somewhere I
don't want to, or what, but have never had that
problem. I have heard of friends who were researching
Breast cancer and triggered something (obviously with
the word Breast) and were deluged with porn. On the
whole, despite Maren's minor frustrations with message
references, I have personally been very happy with AOL
as far as unsolicited porn (although as I said I get
about 12 junk mails to every sandstorm, which doesn't
happen on my other AOL accounts - for this I can hardly
blame AOL)

Re: Bombers at state!
Bomber Boys had a tough time in Tacoma! The wife
and I visited the Tacoma Dome on Thursday to watch the
Bomber boys play Lincoln.
Today I just got off the Webcast of their game
against Shadle Park. I wanted to watch my nephew,
Travis Buck ('02) play. I enjoyed all the regular game
re-caps on the Alumni Sandstorm and knew that Lincoln
was one of the top teams in the state so I better get
down to the tournament early. Most of the pre-write-ups
came true in that if the 2 Bomber offensive kids were
not hot than they would have a hard time keeping up
with the top teams on this side of the mountains. It
was a great game for 3 quarters and then they ran out
of gas. Today they ran out of time and luck with their
game against Shadle Park.
Congrats anyway for getting to the State Playoffs,
only 16 teams get the chance. Better luck for the
girls. If they won yesterday they play Kennewick today.

The Class of 1992 is looking for classmates for
our 10-year reunion! The reunion is set for August 23,
24 and 25, 2002. We're desperately looking for
addresses and/or phone numbers of those in this class.
If you haven't done so already or know of someone in
this class and have this information, please send an
email to: Bomber1992rhs@yahoo.com.
Also, our class fund was given away by the school
for a sidewalk project in 1996. We are planning several
fund raising efforts but need help from our Bomber
family. If you would like to make a donation to our
reunion fund, please send us an email at
Bomber1992rhs@yahoo.com and details will be provided
to you on how you can contribute. Thank you!

Re: Richland 1805-1943
To: All you Bomber History Buffs
A truly great book about Richland is probably
available in your local library, as it is in the
Wenatchee genealogy library. The title is: "Tales of
Richland, White Bluffs & Hanford 1805 - 1943, Before
the Atomic Reserve", by Martha Berry Parker, West
Richland, WA. It was published by Ye Galleon Press,
Fairfield, Washington 1979. It has many pictures and
illustrations if you can't read, which came in useful
to me.

Re: Ugly knees
David,
Those guards are certainly ugly, you're right, BUT,
if I had not worn them, the knees under them would have
destroyed the camera. If you would look behind the
basketball that I am standing behind you will also see
a pair of ugly street shoes... I had forgot my tennies
at home that day. I was just having a bad day, I guess.
Who was the fellow on my right?. I can almost say
his name, but not quite?

Re: B-17 Landing
If you have interest in putting this Unbelievable
Landing of a B-17 (like Days Pay Airplane)... on the
Col Hi website... if you haven t seen... some may enjoy
this terrific story.
*****
THE MOST UNBELIEVABLE LANDING OF A B-17
by George Ureke, Lt. Colonel USAF (Ret.)
Flying a bombing mission out of Foggia, Italy,
off of Tortorella US Army Air Field in Italy, during
W.W.ll, our B-17 caught one hell of a lot of flack.
All four engines were still running, but ALL flight
instruments failed. We had no airspeed indicator. Since
we were returning from the bombing mission in formation
we didn't really need flight instruments except for the
approach and landing. When we arrived over the base at
Tortorella, we peeled off, flying the landing pattern
in trail formation. How to plan my approach with no air
speed indicator? An idea came to me. We II drop behind
the ship in front of us, so that on the final approach,
we can establish a rate of closure to ensure that our
approach would be above stall speed.
Well, in the morning, when we took off, the steel
mat runway was covered with three inches of slimy mud..
It had been raining for weeks. Airplanes, taking off
and landing just pushed the steel mat deeper into the
mud. Every time an airplane took off or landed, more
and more slimy mud had pushed up on top of the steel
mat. So as we approached the mud-covered runway, there
were three or four inches of slippery slime on top of
the mat. But we were not worried (about coming in
"hot"), until I called for flaps. Kenneth D. Goodwin,
our copilot, replied, "we don't have any". "They're not
coming down". -And it was too late to crank them down
by hand.
We weren't about to go around again without an
airspeed indicator. Due to the "hot" approach speed
we didn't touch down until we were half-way down the
field. The airplane in front of us made a normal
landing and turned off at a taxi-strip about five-
hundred feet short of the end of the runway. That pilot
managed to land short enough to turn to the left onto
that first taxi strip. As he turned, he looked out his
left window and saw that we were hallway down the field
before we touched down. He turned to his co-pilot and
says, "Look out that right window. George is going to
crash into the gully at the end of the runway."
(Several British bombers had hit that gully in the
past, and they blew up).
We finally got the plane on the mud and I hit the
brakes. no brakes! (in a B-17, the pilot and co-pilot
can look out their window and see the wheel on their
side). Every time I touched the brakes, the wheels
would stop, lock, and we'd hydroplane over the mud. I
had one choice, something we'd normally try to avoid.
"Ground-loop" I pulled No. 3 and 4 engines all the way
back. I pushed No. 1 and 2 throttles forward to take-
off power, I called for "boosters" and started tapping
the right brake (tying to ground loop to the right, and
let centrifugal force tip the left wing into the
ground). We'd damage the airplane but avoid crashing
into the gully.
Normally, the plane would turn and leave the
runway. But it was so slimy, the wheels had no friction
to make it turn. The plane just kept sliding forward.
No. 1 and 2 engines at full take-off power caused the
airplane to spin around while sliding straight down the
runway. As it approached 180 degrees, I pushed number 3
and 4 throttles full forward. Now we had "take off"
power on all four engines. There we were, going
backwards, toward the end of the runway with all four
engines at full take-off power.
Well, we stopped right on the very end of the
runway and immediately started to taxi back to the
taxiway we just passed while we were sliding backwards.
You can imagine how scared our navigator, James W.
Collier, and the bom
