Re: New Year
Well, here it is; the beginning of a new year. The
best news out of the old seems to be that Maren is now
a grandmother aka "Oma". This is much better than what
CNN brings us.
Of course the final graduation of Dick McCoy (Now
Class of '02) was of semi important news. And the 35th
Anniversary of Jimbeaux ('63) and the Ever Lovely Miss
Nancy ('65) finishes off a reasonable Bomber year.
To: Marcia Wade Hausenbuiller ('67)
I'm sorry, Marcia, you're far too young to know

Re: Blue Lady
There were people dressed up in paint and
pretending to be statues and sit there all day and
don't move. They have a box in front of them and you
are supposed to drop money in their box. Guess it is a
way to make a living. Guess it beats being a telephone
solicitor. :)
Re: Abby
I was coughing a lot and had a sore throat, so I
chose not to go visit Abby. A much as I would have
LOVED to hold her, I was more afraid of her catching
what I had. I am thinking it is probably bronchitis.
And there was NO WAY that I was going to chance making
that beautiful, darling baby girl sick. Sure enough.
Went to the Dr. and that is what I have. I am on an
antibiotic.
To: Linda Reining ('64)
I remember Tiny Tears. I had one of those also.
Thanks for reminding me of her. She was a joy to have.

Re: The Beads of New Orleans
During the Mardi Gras there are floats that are in
the parade. As they go down the street, they throw
cheap beads at the crowds. As, I said, my husband
bought them for me, as this would be the only way that
I would get any. They are very inexpensive. We found
some for $1.99 a dozen.
To: Maren
You did a great job, as usual, with the pictures on
the web site. I should have had you take a picture of
me and Wayne under the Bourbon Street sign. Guess we
will have to come back again. :)
Heading home tomorrow (Jan. 1, 2003)
Hope everyone has a great year to come.

Some sad news. I just learned this a.m. that a
former '83 class member passed away yesterday in a
tragic skiing accident. His name was Donald Dovey (twin
of Daniel Dovey). He was actually a good friend of mine
(my senior prom date-to be exact), and a very nice guy.
An article can be found, via the internet, in the 12/31
Everett Herald. I'm sure the Seattle Times would have
an article also. :(

Re: Fireworks Show
My family walked from our house over to the
Muckleshoot Casino on New Years Eve to catch Larry
Mattingly's ('60) Fireworks show. Found Larry and his
wife and several of his crew over by the casino and
spent about 45 minutes just visiting and telling tales.
At 9pm the fireworks started and I must say that in all
of the years of watching fireworks shows this was the
greatest. And to have Larry standing right next to me
giving information about the different shells and
patterns was the greatest fireworks show I have ever
seen. My Father-in-Law is 87 years old and he said it
was the best show he had ever seen. It was a wonderful
evening.
I might tell a little story here that shows the
kind of person Larry is. Two people walked up to us
while we were talking and Larry greeted them like he
had known them for years. I asked him who they were.
He said that his group had gone to the buffet in the
casino and it was very crowded. He got to talking to
the people in line behind him. When his party was
seated he saw there were several empty chairs at his
table so he went back to the waiting couple and told
them there was no reason for them to wait, they could
join him at his table. It probably saved them 30 or 40
minutes in their wait.
Larry has the true Bomber Spirit and we are proud
of him.

What a wonderful year with all the Bomber reunions.
I'm already counting the days until June's R2K+3 reunion.
Filling the calendar with Bomber luncheons will make
the time go much faster. Asking who I will meet that I
have not seen in so long. Always looking forward to
meeting the Bombers I haven't met. The reunions are
always filled with such great surprises of Bombers who
show up! It would be fun to see an All Bombers luncheon

Re: New Orleans and Oma's Abby
Ain't New Orleans a real kick though? In one day
you could have never done it justice as it takes days
to see a lot of the things that are around there to
see. Plantations of the likes of Oak Alley and so many
cemeteries to view as the headstones are fabulous. Did
Maren take you to the headstone and grave of the
infamous Marie Leveau?
[Didn't make no stinkin' GRAVEYARDS, but I DID point
out Marie Leveau's VODOO shop. We didn't go in. -Maren]
And did you sign it? *G* And the boat trips are so much
fun too. I have been there four times for a week at a
time and was on the run every day to see something of
interest. You are right, you do need to go back
someday. ;o)
Sorry that you didn't get to hold that little angel
of Oma Maren's--I would have worn a gas mask if I had
to to get MY hands on her! LOL! You can go to
ForeverAbby.com and sign her guest book that she will get to read someday.
I have already, as have some other Bombers. Thanks Pam Ehinger

Re: Bomber B.Ball
To: Bombers and especially Rod Brewer ('65) and Jim House ('63)
The preseason coaches picks were (1) Pasco,
(2) Walla Walla, (3) Ike, (4) Richland, (5) Moses Lake,
(6) Southridge, (7) Wenatchee, (8) Davis, (9) Kennewick,
(10) Kamiakin, and (11) Eastmont.
The Bombers opened play at Davis (no player over 6'2"),
but very quick. Richland committed 20 turnovers and 26
fouls and lost by 5. Next up was Kennewick, a home
game. Kennewick ran a good motion defense and were led
by the Nelson brothers. The Bombers ran the same
offense for the most part, but kept pounding the ball
on the floor instead of passing the ball. Kennewick won
by 19. With the upcoming schedule, it looked like we
could be 0-6. Next up was Southridge (just coming off a
win at Ike). The Bombers never trailed and at one point
led by 37. An easy victory by 30 points. Next was
Pasco. Richland shot poorly and lost by 7. Had their
chances late in the game to win. The next game was
Walla Walla at Richland. Both teams played great
defense and Walla Walla played the typical slow down
game. The game was close until Richland went on a 12-2
run and won by 3, 47-44. Walla Walla scored 7 points in
the last 57 seconds. The last game before the Holiday
break was at Ike. The Bombers shot the ball very well,
played good defense and handled the double teaming of
Ike. Ike starts 6'7", 6'7", 6'7", 6'2" and 6'0". The
Bombers were successful by 12 points.
So much for the coaches picks. Davis is 5-0,
Kamiakin is 0-6, Eastmont has won 2, Walla Walla has
only played 2 games and is 1-1 and Pasco is 3-0. Some
games were changed because of the football playoffs.
That's about it until Saturday 01/04/03, when the
Bombers host Moses Lake. With 11 teams in the league,
there are no non-conference games as a team can only
play 20 games (not counting the tournaments). Hope to
have better reports in the future.

Re: Bad Week for Washington Teams
The only good thing about the Rose Bowl; I think I
heard the WSU band play the Carmichael Cougar fight
song.
Equally disappointing was the performance by Seattle's
Rainier Beach H. S. in the basketball tournament in
Houston. The Beach came to town ranked No. 1 in the
nation and left with two losses and in search of some
perimeter shooters. Five other teams in the tourney
were ranked in the top 25, including teams from NY, NJ,
VA, NC and CA. Some of the teams had already played in
tourneys in Florida and Las Vegas. I hope the teams had
fun during their visit here even though we don't have a
Camlin hotel.
That reminds me of some of the great road trips the
Bombers made in the 60's. I know the Gold Medal Class
'63 was thrilled to get to go to both Sunnyside and
Toppenish in the same season. I bet Frank Osgard (63WB)
can also share some fond memories of the wild action in
the hot spots in Wapato after a Bomber game with the
Wolves.

Jan Bollinger Persons ('60) emailed me and asked me
to write the Alumni Sandstorm to let Bombers know about
Gale's passing. Jan and Gale have been close all their
lives... even in adult years living close to each
other. Gale passed away on January 1. 2003 slipping
away peacefully with her daughter Kristin's family in
Kristin's home in Tacoma. They opened their home to
have Gale be with them during Christmas and the
holidays. Gale slipped away little faster than
expected. Recent meeting of Gale's daughter and my
daughter Katrina has bought me close to the family of
the Bollingers again (another Bomber fun story).
Gary Persons ('57)- Jan's husband - & Derrith
Persons ('60) father had a stroke on December 30th.
They were in Richland to be with him. Jan did not
say how his recovery is at this time. If I remember
correctly he was at the Bomber luncheon in Spokane.
The memorial for Gale will be within the next week
in Spokane. Because of Gale being on the west side of
the state at her time of passing, it will be a few days
before the obituary will be in the paper telling when
the memorial is.
I will always remember Gale's beautiful smile. She
will be dearly missed by all who knew her. If you would
like to email the family please email Jan.

they had talk shows in Alabama. I felt the worst for
my Dad. (I still brag that he was the valedictorian at
WSU (aka WSC) in 1941.)
Best restaurant on Saipan for a Bomber luncheon?
Bring it on! We're in food heaven with heavy
populations of Chinese, Korean, Thailand and Japanese
restaurants. Plus the Japanese hotels have great
restaurants. All scrumptious authentic Asian taste
treats.
My favorite? The Next Door Cafe/Coffee Care. Owned
by a guy from Oregon that used to teach English in
Japan that got into the espresso business. Pasta, steak
and seafood straight from the Marianas Trench. If
anyone ever makes it over send me a message before
arriving.

Maren,
The last year was 1982 because that is the year my
little brother Kent "Wig" was the ASB president with
Theresa Schneider as his V.P. and Guy was in there too.
They were the Reps that took the thought of changing
Col Hi to Richland High to the appropriate authorities
for the change. We were glad to see the change and
credit Wig and his group for it. Makes more sense to
be Richland Bombers and actually be from Richland High

Re: Update on Tom McKeown ('53)
To: Those who wanted to know
Tom has bone cancer. He has one stem cell
transplant with his own stem cells. The first one was
done last summer. The second stem cell transplant that
he had in November is from a donor, his younger brother
Mike ('58). This second transplant is very progressive
and quite risky. There only about 150 of them that
have been done. Survival thru the next 100 or so days
is about 50/50. The success rate after the 100 or so
days is about 85% to be cancer free and high chance of
close to normal life. Intense pain but they felt it was
worth the risk. Tom is tough and is faring as expected.
Attn Millie
Will e mail Darlene!s Seattle address to you. Sorry

I hear that a classmate from '55, Duane Smith,
makes excellent wines from his vineyard in Benton City

Re: Bands and Headbands
I am confused about the bands at the bowl games. I
think the U. Of Wisconsin band played dah-dah-dah-dah-
dah-dah-dah-dah-dah.
I couldn't have handled the decision as to which
headband to wear. I had enough trouble deciding on the
socks. Gold socks with the green uniforms and green
with the gold? Or the other way around? I was lucky to
have my shoes tied by game time. Those decisions were
typically based more on superstition than fashion, well
except for Denler (64), I believe he wore an ascot
under his jersey.
I think John Sonderland (62) always wore two pair
of socks; two green and two gold, in case he forgot
where he was. Discussing the superstitions of Bomber
athletes might take the Sandstorm to a new low, so I
will stop here.
Sorry I brought it up.

Where were the Coug alumni? 3 Rose Bowls in the last

Re: Lost RED 3 ring binder
Judy,
You had such good luck locating the lady with the
lost necklace from the Club40 reunion last September
[See the 12/11/02 Alumni Sandstorm] that maybe you will
bring me luck on locating a 3 ring binder that came up
missing at the Class of '60 reunion, August 2000.
I had done quite a lengthy search for information
about special write ups in the Tri-City Herald, both at
the Kennewick and Richland Libraries in the TCH
Microfilm File. I copied articles and pictures for
approximately one month prior to our June graduation
and following period. I placed all the information in a
red 3 ring binder and gave this to Fred Phillips ('60)
who was our MC for the Saturday night get together at
the Richland Red Lion Hanford House. Fred said he
placed it in the Hospitality Room by the furthest
outside room from the pool. I checked with many
participants and the hotel management with no luck.
When checking with Fred he said that was the last place
he had it. If anyone who attended this great event has
it, the information would be great for the 50th... or
sooner.
Thanks Judy for your great powers and to any of our
helpful Bombers.

Re: HBPJ
Not that it matters, but a certain beautiful lady
is very aware of my secretarial situation. I had one
leave after being with me about 12 years... as you can
imagine, it's been a nightmare. Hired a nice older lady
who I thought would be just perfect. Kinda frumpy and
much older. Figured she would work out just fine...
turned out she was about 5 years younger than I and a
newlywed... I mean a rip roaring newlywed... her
husband would pull up in the parking lot at 4 and at 5,
no matter what she was doing or had to be done for the
next day... she was gone... undergarments dropped along
the way... It was the pits... fired her and she managed
to sabotage more files than you could possibly imagine
in the half hour it took her to pack and leave. Next
day, I actually had to borrow the judge's file to argue
a case... so, the point of all this is that I knew
this really sexy "older" woman who was job hunting...
looking to make a little change in her life... I mean
working with me would be about as much a change as
anyone could ever want... right?... So I kinda hint
around to this lady that I know of a great spot to
work... so I give her the quiz... right? 1. Can you
type real fast? 2. Do you mind long hours if need be?
3. Lift up your top. 4. How much money do you need?
5. If we have to can you work weekends when I'm in
trial. 6. Lift up your top. Do you know she saw those
two trick questions coming and got them both wrong!
"No" is not an appropriate answer, ya know! Ok so she
outsmarted me... but then what could I expect. Sorry I
was so caught up in me and my trials and tribulations

Re: Bomber Basketball 2003
The Bombers started off the new year with their
first game against the Moses Lake Chiefs, sporting a
4-1 record. The Chiefs have one of the premier guards
in Brian Kast, a 6'1" senior, who has had a pure shot
forever. They are not terribly big, with the post at
6'7" and about 160 pounds.
Moses Lake scored first with a trey from Kast
followed by a deuce from Valdez. 5-0 Chiefs with 6:09
remaining. Johnson scored on a quick turn around in the
paint followed by a trey from the Chiefs and a driving
lay up from Tierney. Baskets by Walker and Kast made
the score 11-4 Chiefs with 4:23 remaining. Joey Frank
scored from the baseline and Bussman muscled in a short
shot in the paint with a foul. Foul shot good. 11-9
Chiefs with 3:34 to go in the first quarter. Kast
nailed a bucket from beyond the arch and Frank hit
another base line jumper for the Bombers. Kast scored
the next 6 points on two treys and the Chiefs led 20-11
with 2:07 to play. Bussman hit a jumper followed by the
Chiefs Lawson. 22-13 Chiefs. Frank muscled up an
offensive rebound for the Bombers and Lawson finished
the first quarter scoring for the Chiefs. At the end of
one, Chiefs 24-15.
The Bombers opened the second stanza with pressure
defense and Kast picked up his second and third foul
early in the quarter. York started a 7 point run for
the Bombers with a deep trey followed by a driving
deuce. Johnson was hacked and converted two free-throws
and with 6:02 remaining it was 24-22 Chiefs. Lange put
back an offensive board for the Chiefs with 5:30
remaining. The Bombers went on an 11 point run. York
hit two from the charity strip and followed that with
a trey on the assist from Bussman. The next trip down
the floor York returned the favor with an assist to
Bussman. Johnson hit two from the stripe and Bussman
finished the Bombers second quarter scoring with two
from the line. Lawson canned a short shot in the paint
for the Chiefs to end the half. Bombers 33-28. The
Bombers out scored the Chiefs 18-4 during the second
quarter.
The Chiefs shot much better in the next period and
Kast returned to the floor after sitting out most of
the second quarter. The 6'7" Lange (who did little in
the first half) scored the first 6 points for the
Chiefs sandwiched between a buckets by Frank, Johnson
and Tierney. With 5:13 in the third it was Bombers 39-
34. Kast hit a jumper in the key and Millican made one
of two from the charity strip to cut the lead to two
points. B J Arthurs (nursing an ankle sprain) scored
inside for the Bombers but Lange got one of two from
the free throw line and Baker hit a deuce to make the
score Bombers 43-42. Kast picked up his fourth foul mid
way through the period and returned to the pine. A big
trey from Johnson at the 1:52 mark put the Bombers
ahead by three. Walker scored two for the Chiefs and
Arthurs scored in the paint on an assist from York.
Lawson hit a driving bucket for the Chiefs to end the
third quarter at 47-46 Bombers.
The final period started with another deuce from
Frank and a return bucket by the Chiefs. Bussman hit a
trey from Downtown, but Walker drove the lane for two
to make the score 52-50 Bombers with 5:50 to play. The
Chiefs were well over the limit on fouls and the
Bombers expected to greet the charity stripe with open
arms. Frank was fouled on a rebound and calmly put in
both shots. Kast followed with a deuce and it was 54-52
Bombers with 2:49 to play. Frank drove the key, hoop
and a hack, foul shot good. After a miss by the Chiefs
Frank hit one of two from the stripe to make the score
58-52 Bombers with 1:11 to play. Kast hit a deuce, his
final points of the game, to cut the lead to 4. Johnson
nailed two from the foul line for the Bombers and Lange
put in an offensive rebound for the Chiefs, The last 4
points were two foul shots from York, one of two from
Bussman and with 3 seconds remaining York hit one of
two from the charity stripe. Final, Bombers 64-56.
York had 17, Frank 16, Bussman 12 and Johnson 11
for the Bombers, The Bombers were 18 of 36 from two
point range but only 3 of 17 from beyond the arch. The
charity strip produced 19 of 23, a sizzling 83%. The
Bombers pulled down 19 offensive boards (5 by Bussman)
and 23 from the defensive end. Bussman led with 13
caroms. York had 3 of the Bombers 8 steals and 5 of the
Bombers 13 assists. Bussman blocked one shot and the
home team committed only 7 turnovers. Kast led all
scored with 20 points, 14 in the first quarter alone.
Next week the Bombers have a bye on Friday and
travel to Wenatchee on Saturday. Stay tuned for more
Bomber action. After staring 0-2 with losses to Davis
and Kennewick, the Bombers have won 4 of their last 5
to go 4-3. A win at Southridge, a loss at Pasco, a big
win over Walla Walla at home and another at Eisenhower
before the holiday break, followed by the win over
Moses Lake puts the Bombers in 4th place. Every team
has at least one loss early in the season.
Re: Change on Basketball Results
Davis is undefeated, 6-0, as they beat Ike 100-72.
Pasco and Walla Walla have one loss, Southridge and
Moses Lake have two losses, followed by the Bombers
with 3 losses, Kennewick and Eastmont have 4 losses,
Eisenhower has 5 losses and Kamiakin has not won a
game. Richland has defeated Southridge, Eisenhower,
Walla Walla and Moses Lake. Losing at Davis, Kennewick
at home and at Pasco The remaining games in the first
half for the Bombers are at Wenatchee, Kamiakin at home
and at Eastmont. The second half will find the Bombers
home for six of their 10 games.

Re: Lost and found
Ok... we Bombers are funny sorts. We know it and we
are proud of it. Today I watched "Fat Man and Little
Boy" for about the 100th time... never get tired of
it... it's a little of that glue that holds us all
together.
Well, as it became clear from my blurb yesterday, I
missed out on a really great lady to work with because
she "missed" the trick questions... Sorry I called her
an "older" woman... but I thought more "mature" or more
"experienced" might get me in real trouble.
A couple of the guys have been mentioning our
Mr. Denler ('64) lately and it has been bothering me
that when I send mass mailings, his address now comes
up as no such number no such zone... Checked with
numbers 32 ('63) and 10 ('64) as well as Freddie
Schafer ('63) and Jimbeaux ('63) and none of them had a
new email address for the boy. Even our great publisher
didn't have a new address for him. So here's the deal,
we don't lose no one... even those that would prefer
not to be found get found around here... so, anybody
seen Denler lately or got a new email address for him...
lemme know!
Thanks a bunch!

Re: Jerome Durbin, 1908-2003
Dear Maren:
Earlier this evening I sent this message to your
other address. Just noticed I should perhaps have used
the "Sandstorm" address.
Maybe you could let people know that my beloved
daddy, Jerome Durbin, age 94 1/2, died this morning. We
found him when we went down to make breakfast. He went
peacefully and without pain during the night. It was
the way he wanted to go. I think it was metastatic
cancer from a melanoma he had removed in 1991. But he
was still mentally alert, getting around with a walker,
reading his newspaper and readers' digest and watching
football. We weren't ready for him to go, because you
never are, but he's at peace with my Mom, Hilda, in
heaven now. They had 4 kids, 18 grandchildren, and 7
great grandchildren.
We'll probably have the funeral on Saturday the
11th, and then fly down to Elizabethtown, Kentucky to
bury him with my mom.
My Folks moved to Richland from Kentucky in 1947,
and lived on Sanford and then on Trippe. My oldest
brother, Jerry, did high school at a seminary, but the
rest of us are Bombers: my brother, Terry ('62), my
sister Marye ('63) and I'm class of '69. My dad often
proudly wore his Day's Pay and Richland Bombers T-
shirts, even out here near Philadelphia (much to the
locals' puzzlement).
Best wishes,

Re: Rose Bowl
Hey, Greg Alley (73)
I contemplated driving/flying all the way to
California, to watch a College football game, but then
it dawned on me, wow, it's only a college football
game. If I were gonna travel half way across the US, I
might go to San Diego, to watch the Raiders in the
Super Bowl. Been a Raider fan since the '60s. Seen them
play, many times. If they don't make the Super Bowl, I
will still be a fan. I may watch the Super Bowl, on my
wide screen TV. Hey, I even ventured out as far as to
get to the Pro Bowl once.
Here I sat, in my Iowa basement, watching the Rose
Bowl, on the wide screen, with Jeanette Haberman ('73).
(She is quite the Cougar fan) We like snacking on the
Cougar Cheese that my sister, Bexa ('72) sends us for
Christmas each year.
I will venture out, this winter, to ride my Harley
to Bike Week in Daytona, It will be cold, but Hey, it's
Bike Week in Daytona!
As Keith Jackson said, "Go Cougs."
Great to be a Raider Fan, with a Silver and Black Harley, in Iowa,

Re: Non Localized Prostate Cancer
This is personal and I'm uncomfortable with sharing
such information about myself. On the other hand, by
what I say, maybe a few fellas may be motivated to have
their yearly physicals after they reach age 50 or so.
I last had a physical 3 years ago and because I am in
good health, I delayed getting the next one. When I
did, I found that a previous PSA of 1.7 had risen to
17.0 I won't go into other diagnostic details except
to say that I have an 85% chance that I have cancer
that has already left the prostate.
I've had a lot of well meaning advise on what to do
about my cancer, but the facts are that current medical
treatments for a guy with extra capsuler prostate
cancer all fail within 5 to 10 years. If you're real
lucky, maybe 15. But the side effects! Discouraging for
sure. The promising treatments of the future are aimed
at getting the body to defeat cancer. These include
making vaccine from your cancer to pump up your immune
system (which then kills the cancer). Also watch for
antiangiogenic therapies. They are aimed at getting
your body to fight. We all have cancer in us, but some
of us have stronger immune systems that keep the cancer
in check. I was born 10 years too soon!

Possibly one of the reasons there were so few
Cougar alum at the game was the cheesy way WSU handled
ticket sales. You were given points based mostly on how
much you had donated to WSU. I have worked for WSU for
29 years in the same job and my first little card from
WSU said I had 600 points and therefore not eligible
for a ticket since bottom of the list to get tickets
was 27,000+ points. Later on when it was evident they
weren't going to sell enough, I got another card the
day after Christmas stating I was eligible to buy a
ticket. Some of my coworkers got tickets from big-donor
friends who received several so they could make plans
early on to attend. At the game friends said scalpers
were selling tickets anywhere from $10-25.

Re: SPRING TIME ALERT!!!!!
While taking a walk on January 2 here in Vancouver,
WA, I noticed a bit of green in my neighbor's planter.
Low and behold, the Crocus flowers were pushing up
through the earth. I have seen these early Spring
plants in February, but never before in early January!
I began to look around and discovered that some bushes
had green buds ready to burst. Mother nature has really
been fooled this year! There have only been a couple of
days with lows below freezing, and most daytime highs
this winter have been in the fifties and even a few low
sixties! With all the rain and mild temperature things
are greener then normal. And we haven't had one flake
of snow this year either. If this keeps up I will be
mowing the lawn by the middle of February! (Grin!) Oh,
wait a minute! That may not be a good thing! lol
Anyway, with any luck Spring will be just around the
corner.
Regardless, Spring is already here for me as my son
Will is sneaking home from the Air Force this week to
surprise his Mom and girl friend. (With help from his dad.)

get good deals on Five Star accommodations [I should

displays of football, such as the Rose Bowl [and Sun

Re: Relentless Cyber Intruders
It is unfortunate that greed has permeated the
Internet to the extent that our right to surf the web
without being violated is no longer possible. I had
an experience recently, which proved that there is no
limit to how vulnerable we really are when we enter
cyberspace. I was snared by a pop-up ad. I am forced to
do a ctrl/alt/delete and now I'm off line. Expletive!
Was that the end of it? Nooo! I then find that the site
has insidiously become my new homepage. Yikes! Now I am
really livid. I scramble to get my original homepage
back. Precious time wasted!. More Expletives! Was that
the end of it? Nooo! I later go into my favorites and
find my senior brain cells being challenged. I don't
remember setting up the folders that are now appearing
before my eyes, i.e. Shopping, Gaming, Cool Stuff,
Entertainment, etc. I open one of the seven mysterious
folders and run my mouse over one of the links in the
folder and find that the link is to my relentless
intruder's web site. Scary!
The porn spam and the stacked pop-up ads that force
you off line are bad enough, and now this. I read about
people having their homepage taken over in a Q and A
computer section of the newspaper a while back, so I
think this may be a new wave of invasion to be
experienced if you haven't already been a victim. The
ability to invade my favorites was what really blew me
away. I had not heard or read about that happening to
people and had never imagined such a thing possible,
nor had I imagined someone doing something so
unconscionable. I see no way to protect ones self
from these type of attacks. Maybe someone in this
forum has some suggestions to pass on.
I don't think that there is any way to avoid spam
email. Selling lists is widespread. Even our schools
sell lists. I know people who rarely surf the web and
they get that horrible porn spam. There may be ISP's
that sell lists. The best way that I know of to avoid
being intimidated into not fully utilizing the web as
you would like is to have two email addresses. Use one
strictly for personal use and the other one when
signing up at web sites, using site's Tell-A-Friend
(this is a free service offered to web sites by outfits
and I am certain a spam generator), email a page to a
friend (same free service), etc. Go into your spam
email account every so often and click on select
all/delete. Voila!
The last thing that we want is to have the Internet
regulated, but I fear that things may get worse before
they get better.

other fathers of Sandstorm readers. We Smyth children
used to help out Dad with the K of C when it was near
the "Rose Bowl". I used to mow the lawn and the odor
outside was most challenging.
A function of growing up... I have difficulty with
the switch from friends' parents and parents' friends

what age does THAT happen? Time stops for no one.

Re: Tule Fog
To: Betty McElhaney Hudspeth ('57)
Betty,
Tulle is the name of an aquatic plant, that makes
it home in fresh water lakes and ponds.
Since fog is nothing more than a cloud that has
formed on the ground (temperature & dew point are the
same). And since the density of a cloud (fog) is
dependent on the amount of water vapor in the air.
As the temperature drops (over night) you will find
a cloud (fog) forming over a pond or lake. This is
because the air over a body of water is more saturated
with water, than the air is over dry ground. That is
why you will see fog over the Columbia river, but not
over the desert.
In California we have a large lake in the south end
of the central valley called Tulle lake. (named after
the aquatic plant which grows in abundance in the
lake). During the winter months, in California, the
outside air temperature drops far enough so it is the
same as the dew point temperature. When this happens a
thick dense cloud (fog) forms over Tulle lake. Thus the

Re: Jerome Durbin (RIP)
This last weekend I cashed in some air miles and
took a couple of days for a fast trip to Tucson on
business and a nice evening with George ('63) and Peggy
Barnett and then up to Phoenix to see and hold my
newest great grand daughter, Andrea. Got some great 4
generation pictures.
When I caught up on several days of the Sandstorm
on my return, I was saddened to see of Jerome's
passing. My sympathies to the family. He was always a
favorite person to me. I admired him for his unfailing
good spirits. We, Jerry, as I knew him, my mother and
dad and myself were all born in places a few winding
miles apart in the edge of the Kentucky hills. They
knew each other before Richland. Jerry and I spent many
hours working together at the Knights of Columbus hall.
He exemplified the good in others. One thing about the
passing of a man like Jerry: you gotta know he is with
Hilda and happy in a better place. No fear, God will be
good to him.

Thanks so much for letting us know about this site!
(I have been on vacation with my husband in Laughlin,
Nevada, so I'm just getting around to reading earlier
Alumni Sandstorms issues.) I really enjoyed looking up
many songs for kids. I teach child development in a
high school in San Jose. My students have been studying
children and are currently planning and setting up
their second semester on-campus preschool. We have
seventeen preschoolers come in two mornings a week. My
students teach them art, music, science, etc. This site
will be great to help them plan their music activities.
I am always looking for new ideas to help them in their
teaching. I hope that many of them will go on to teach
in some capacity. This site is wonderful.

Yes, the weather is mild this Winter. In between
the storms that enable the surf to drop driftwood the
size of Volkswagens all the way up to the dune grass,
it has been sunny and very warm here on the Washington

I did send you a reply to your e mail... I'm sorry
that it didn't arrive, so I will answer your question
here. Tule (pronounced "toolee") fog is indeed so thick
you cannot see your hand in front of your face! I
didn't believe it, but when I moved here in 1985, I got
my first experience with it... I went outside, put my
hand in front of my face, and I could NOT see it!!! It
was really weird! It usually burns off by 10-10:30am,
but yesterday it decided to hang around all day... sun
never did come out and the schools were delayed for 2
hours... the busses won't run in those conditions, so
the teachers have to be there, but the students are
allowed to come in 2 hours later. I hate driving in it
and usually don't, but on occasions when I have had
to, I drive with at least one window down, slower than
the speed limit, avoid the freeway and take surface
streets!
-Linda Reining ('64) ~ Bakersfield, CA - wind is
blowing and it is cold outside. Someone mentioned
gardeners mowing lawns in near-freezing temps...
the gardeners here mow even when it rains...
nothing stops them! *GRIN* They also put down rye
grass and either cow manure or sulfate of ammonia
(I think that is what it is called... little white
pellets that have to be watered to melt) in the
Winter, that way they can have year-round
employment! *GRIN*

To: Ken Ely ('49)
Ken,
That was not Leon Symanski (Leon's real name). I
dated Leon on occasion and he was an only child. I
used to go to his house and listen to classical music.
His family was music oriented and had a marvelous
collection of classical music records. In fact I have
some that were given to me as gifts. His mom was a
great cook and kept inviting me to dinner, but I
wouldn't stay because I was afraid she would try to
feed me kidney stew. Leon told me it was delicious, but
after his mother mentioned it was a wonderful dish as
long as you soaked all the urine out of the kidneys, I
couldn't bring myself to eat it. Years later, I was
sitting in a pub in London and their specialty was beef
and kidney pie and I decided it was time to lay aside
my youthful prejudices and try this popular English
dish. When I went to sample the concoction, the smell
of urine assailed my nose. I don't know if it was my
imagination or not, but I couldn't get the first bite
into my mouth. That was the end of my experimentation
with kidney stew.
Later on, in my wild and single days, two girl
friends and I rented his family home. At that time, the
houses still belonged to the company and it was against
the rule to sublet. The neighbors squealed on us
(probably because of the noisy social gatherings) and
we were evicted. I would like to get in touch with
Leon. Does anyone have his current address?

Re: Relentless Cyber Intruder
In the 1/8/03 Sandstorm, I wrote about a pop-up ad
that had entrapped me, become my new computer homepage
and set up folders in my favorites. After reinstalling
my original homepage, I deleted the folders and deleted
all of my Internet Temporary files. I just wanted this
intruder completely off of my computer. It seems as
though that may not be possible. Now when I turn on my
computer, on my desktop I get that little gray square
with the big red X, which says "This program has
performed an illegal operation and will shut down." The
blue strip at the top of the gray square gives the name
of this intruder's web site, followed by the word
"Startup". I close the gray square and then everything
seems to be okay. This intruder is not a fly-by-night
web site. It is a search engine web site. Not a well
known one, or at least not one that I had ever heard
of before, but a sizeable web site. I hesitate to give
the web site's name in a public forum because they are
obviously unscrupulous and I don't want more problems
from them. The name really isn't important since that
is not going to prevent you from being snared when you
are surfing the web. It happened to me when I was
surfing numerous sites and since pop-ups stack up, I
don't know which site generated it or when it happened.
I am hoping that maybe there is someone in this forum
who is computer literate enough to know what it is that
they may have embedded in my computer to now make them
a permanent part of my daily life.
If this happened to me, there is a good chance that
it will happen to someone else in this forum at some
point in time. If this type of intrusion becomes
pervasive on the web, we will probably be hearing about
it in the news. Words cannot express how violated and
angry I feel right now.

over water and land. Good information. I just want to
add, that after many years of camp fire conversations

usually forms in the low spots first. Knowing this can
help one avoid dangerous situations. Also must mention
that the best fishing on a lake is in these low spots.

I don't really know if it was that glass of great
Northwest Reisling, being at Michael Peterson's oldest
daughter's (Amanda) basketball game (maybe the first
one I've been to since HS) or maybe the elk pepperoni
stick right before bed, but I woke up from a dream of
our Jazz Choir. That group of people were so special
and important in my life. Not being able to go back to
sleep I got up and looked at the old... yikes really
old '76 Columbian. Turning to the music page I was
reminded of that great trip we took to Japan. Who could
forget Scott Bates laughing so hard that orange juice
came out his nose... all over the stoic Japanese
businessman on the plane... wait that might have
happened on the bus heading to Moscow Jazz
Festival... Moscow... wow we were world travelers
weren't we. Oops, that's right Moscow, Idaho.
Of course the thing that the Columbian reminded me
of was our awesome sense of style. The picture shows us
posing in those FINE steel gray/blue leisure suits and
those polyester dresses they really were sexy don't cha
think! Of course then as I perused further back I guess
those outfits could have been worse... .we could have
still been wearing those red polyester pants with the
"cowboy" shirts from 1975.
Along those lines does anybody else look at the
kids today and want to yell "Hey kid, I had those pants
in 1974!"?
We did have some great times though, the trips we
took were so much fun and experiences we had were
unforgettable. The short "fishing" excursions always
were a highlight escaping from those long bus rides.
We had some great talent in that group the "girls
quartet", Michael Peterson, The Mattinglys, Paul Barber,
Scott Bates... man we had some folks who could sing.
Sorry I guess I'm rambling... does anyone else have
any of those memories... especially of that great
"Japan" trip??

My mother, sisters and I went to the Silent Auction
fund raiser for the Richland High Choir last night.
There were some incredible things to bid on, from golf
lessons to driving lessons to massages to night cruises
on the Columbia River.
WOW! What an honor... to be invited to sing at
Carnegie Hall. I was amazed there weren't more people
there. Over $1500 was collected, not counting just
plain donations, so it was all worth it. Thanks to all
who braved the dark to get there (I didn't even know
where the Battelle Auditorium was, so of course we got
lost!) I can't wait to see all the pics from the trip.
They're still accepting donations, so feel free to drop
them a buck or two.

Re: Pop Up Ads [aka, APUs -- Annoying Pop Ups]
Relentless Cyber Intruder
To: Mary Ray Henslee ('61) & All Interested Bombers
I, too, reported some time ago about an increase in
pop-up ads and huge amounts of spam. The problem got so
bad that it required me to replace my hard drive and
completely load all programs and files. For anyone who
has done this before, you know it takes hours to
accomplish.
The point I'm making is that my problem had more to
do with what they call "Spyware" or "Scumware". These
are programs that act like viruses, eat up your
computer's memory, and even turns your computer
into a server for other computers. You get these by
downloading things that have spyware attached and you
don't even know that you've agreed to it. Weatherbug,
for instance, was one of my major offenders. There are
many others like Date Manager, Precision Time and
especially Kazaa, the music sharing program. These are
all nasty critters.
After hours of research, I found a program that
removes known spyware from your computer. The program
can be downloaded for free, and when you do, you run it
much like a virus scan program. I'm not here to endorse
anything, only to say that after a couple of months, my
problems have largely been fixed. If you want to use it
and it works, then great. I just thought I might save
someone hours of grief.
Go to www.lavasoftusa.com and download the
program AdAware 5.83. Once loaded on your system do a
restart then run the scan. If the program finds any
bad guys on your system you check all the boxes and
delete them. I now do this on a daily basis... the scan
only takes about 2 minutes.
Hope this helps anyone with the problems of pop-up
ads and spam.

Re: Bomber demographics
Something came to mind this morning while I was
reading the Alumni Sandstorm. Have we ever done a study
on Bomber Alum demographics? This seems to ring some
sort of bell with me, but I can’t remember
when/how/where, etc.
Anyway, I think it would be interesting to know how
many are married, never married, now single, widowed,
how many kids, grand kids, kind of work, living where.
That kind of stuff.
Would it be tough to set up a questionnaire
connected to a Bomber site that would tabulate this
stuff?
Just thinking out loud --- input solicited.
Thanks,
-Lynn-Marie Hatcher (’68) - now single, two sons, no
grand kids yet, nurse working toward THREE nurse
practitioner degrees in grad school, living in
Spokane at present

No, I've never yelled "Hey kid, I had those pants
in 1974," though I've been tempted. Summer of 2000 I
was stateside for R2K and went camping with a bunch of
junior high and high school girls. The first shock was
that these girls were the daughters of people who were
behind me in school. The second was that they wore
embroidered chambray shirts, bell bottom jeans, head
bandannas, and the whole nine yards. I felt like I had
been transported back to the halls of RHS, or maybe
even to Twana Trek, circa Camp Field. I mentioned to
my friend's 15-year-old daughter that we used to dress
like that, and she replied, "Yeah, we call it the
'retro look.'" Oooooeee, no comeback to that!

Thank you to the Bomber Alumni that have supported
the Art Dawald Gymnasium floor replacement with your
generous contributions. Floor replacement will happen
this summer because of the support we are receiving
from all of you. We just received Jim Houses' ('63)
donation today and it blew us away. Thanks!!
We have received many $50 donations because
everyone seems to want a piece of that Bomber tradition
and nostalgia. $50 donors will receive a laser engraved
floor board from the original floor. You can see a
picture of the floor board at Bomber Boosters website
if you would like to get one too.
Donors that give $100 or more will also receive
permanent recognition on a wall plaque in the foyer of
Dawald. Our website gives a lot of information about
the project. We just wanted to thank all of you who
have supported "Get FlooRed".

Re: Seattle Area Lunch - 1/12/03
Another great time at the Fife get together. It was
great to meet first timers John ('66) and Merrilee Zimmer.
Hope they continue to attend. John said that it sure
brought back some old memories. Burt Pierard ('59) made
it over for the lunch. Seems he is working over here
several days a week so maybe we can see him more often.
Nada McCoy ('62) also made it and it was great to see
her and get a chance to talk with her again. Larry
Mattingly ('60) had his birthday this month so he got
his birthday "cake". I think he liked us singing to him
but I am not sure.
Attendees: Delores Moody Stewart ('60) and husband,
Chuck, John ('66) and Marrilee Zimmer, Irl French ('51),
Jessica Blessing, Agnes Hughes, Tom Hughes ('56),
Patti Jones Ahrens ('60), Gayle Dunn Sutton ('62),

Sounds like good advice. Maybe it will take a few
class action lawsuits to get some of these "Scumbuckets"
to change their stripes. Is that a word we used as teens
or did I pick that one up in my later life. Can't remember?
Unlike you, I have never downloaded anything. If a
site wants you to download something in order to see
it, I always pass. I am guessing that something ended
up in my registry, which caused that gray square to
come up after I deleted everything connected with my
intruder. Basically to tell me that my computer was
looking for something that is no longer there. I am
just speculating because it seems to me that I read
once that when that gray illegal operation square comes
up it is because you are doing something invalid that
your computer doesn't recognize. I know that I don't
have a virus or anything that will eat up my files.
Just an annoyance that makes you skeptical about
surfing the web, which I think is very sad. Your
experience really makes a person skeptical about going
to unfamiliar sites and ever downloading anything.
My Server scans for viruses. I got a note one time
saying that an incoming email had been sent back to
