Susan Hurst ('65) had a hole in one on June 11th
at Twin Rivers Golf Course in Fall City. 136 yarder
and believe me this one is not an easy hole. There is
a large stump that you have to go over to get to the
green, river on your right and trees on your left.

I will be at Battleground State Park on August 3rd.
Have you placed announcements in the newspapers? There
are a few people in that area that still don't have
computers and they might come if they read it in the
Battleground paper. (Like Tom Martin, class of 48) Let
me know what you want me to bring.

Hello,
I just heard about this site. We moved to Richland
the summer of 1946, and lived at 1103 Long (right
across from the Catholic rectory house.) We moved into
West Richland when I was in the 3rd grade, and between
3rd and 6th, I think I attended all but one of the
then current grade schools. They just didn't know what
to do with the West Richland kids.
I attended Carmichael, then Columbia High,
graduating in 1959. I'd love to find some of my old
classmates. I'm also looking for Madeline Blazon

Well it's been a week, and the buzz is just
starting to wear off. Doctor Feelgood cleared me off
of IR today, now that my chapped lips have healed from
all the kissin'. My shoulders are still pretty stiff
from the nearly continuous hugging, but the best news
is that my belt buckle has never been shinier. We
finally got my bike shorts off with paint thinner,
ouch. What a great reunion, and everyone was so nice
to one another. But you wouldn't expect anything less
from the Gold Medal Class of '63.
Great memories play through my head like a bad
power point presentation. To have Kandy Smith back
in the fold, was a special treat. Seeing Pitts and
Whiteside finishing each other's sentences after all
these years, turned back the clock. Pat Murphy's
smile can still warm up a room. If I could figure out
a way to bottle Ellen and Mary Lou's giggles, I could
afford more than "Two Buck Chuck". Bill Wilson with
his German accent, complete with that Texas panhandle
twang, is still my country code 49 friend. Carla Stein
and Ivalee Workman, both of whom I hadn't seen since
before the Ford administration, were there to add
credibility to all of those Lewis and Clark stories
Plows, Pook and I shared. Jim House can still make
anyone smile. I bet he could even get Lyda to at least
snicker, knowing that the inevitable laugh was about
to explode and would have to come out somewhere.
Carole Sledge, Rosalie and Susan Kinney continue to be
forever young.
For all of you who missed the Memorial on Sunday
morning, don't miss it next time. It was a very
fitting ending to a wonderful weekend. At a time in
our lives when we are learning that every day is
precious, I'm actually looking forward to 2008. It
can't come any too soon.

Thank you for taking the time to share with all of

so many familiar names and as I was browsing through
today's list I saw the address I grew up at from 7th

Re: First post here
I have really enjoyed reading all of your posts,
and finally decided to break down and say hello from
my corner of "lurkdom". I doubt very much if anyone
will remember me, since my high school years around
Bomber-type places were spent kinda quiet, with either
a sketchbook or a book in hand. I hung out with the
quiet, "good kid" types mostly, a few notable
exceptions being Edye Jenkins ('72), Darvi Markfelder ('72RIP),
Jean Bartlett and their buddies, Dunning, Underwood,
and Bolkan. (Also, Dianne Merckx, who we lost the same
summer ('75) as Shannon Varley ('73RIP)) I was so sad
to hear about Darvi's death; she was the wild child
little sister of my best friend in high school, Janice
Markfelder ('71). I remember running around with Edye
and Darvi and their gang, Edye's hair crammed into a
bun warmer and her eyes twinkling maniacally behind
her John Lennon specs, Jean being all flower child
cool, and Darvi with her wicked, wicked grin. Jan and
I just sort of hung on and went along for the ride,
sometimes in Dunning's little green and black "fly"
(I think it was a Triumph Spitfire), sometimes in
whatever bomb one of the girls was driving. We sort
of watched their exploits from the fringes of whatever
was happening, hoping that everyone, including us,
would survive... My main participation was as a sort
of historian, photographing or drawing them. I drew
Chris Bolkan and Darvi with her little peekapoo dog,
Mike Dunning swinging from a tree like a monkey, Mike
Underwood with his sleeveless shirts, headbands and
those infamous striped bell bottoms. I drew Dianne in
art class, the whole bunch at Farrell's (remember the
mall and the ice cream troughs, the drum, the little
plastic animals?), and a whole lot more. The pictures
have started to fall apart with age, so I am re-
claiming digitally all the ones I can. Some of them no
longer exist, but reading the emails from familiar
names are dredging up more and more memories. Somehow,
after CBC, and my marriage, I lost touch with almost
everyone, and it's great to find out where life took
them.
Three years ago, I contracted lupus after being
given sulfa drugs, and am now in a wheelchair most of
the time, which gives me opportunity to finesse my
art, and dig around on alumni sites. ;) I draw under
the name Phoenix RRP, and if you like fantasy/realism
in art, I have a website you can check out at
http://phoenix_rrp.tripod.com/
My youngest daughter Alyssa draws as well, and
just won the Allied Arts Scholarship for Continuing
Student at CBC. Her work was on display at the gallery
(and their website) during the month of June. (Mother
type plug...!)
Anyway, I just wanted to say that it has been great
reading about all your memories in the Sandstorm, and
ask that you all
Keep well and keep safe,
-Ruth Russell Pierson ('71)
P.S.: I am not sure if this is the way things are
done, but I am going to attach a pic of the
"unholy trio" of Bolkan, Dunning and Underwood
that kind of sums up the summer of '71 for me.

Re: Laundry Lists
To: Brad Upton ('74)
I have been contemplating a new career as a
professional musician - all those years of accordion
lessons with Fred Grazzini have to pay off somewhere.
Not being – "in the business" like you, I wasn't
really sure how I could really get my new career
going. I thought about perhaps hooking up with Larry
Mattingly ('60) and perhaps he could help "skyrocket"
me to fame and fortune, or perhaps get Jeff Curtis ('69)
to write a witty anecdote that included reference to
my prodigious skill on the ole squeezebox. I believe
Jeff has already shared with us some of his insights
into music lessons, the angst of budding stardom on
Starlite Stairway and other semi-professional venues.
I also considered getting Mike Davis ('74) to endorse
me based on extensive contributions to the musical
education program in Finley or perhaps Val Ghirardo ('73)
for my frequent guest appearances at the Spudnut Shop.
None of these really seemed to have the "hook" I was
looking for... until your recent postings of laundry
lists!!!
What better way to get some free publicity for my
upcoming gigs than laundry lists. Alas, I didn't have
any. Not to be dissuaded by such a trivial fact- I
wracked my brain for acceptable alternatives. I came
up with two:
1). Pete Wascher's (Service Oil Company) old Fuel
Oil Delivery route books
2). My dad's (Dean-Jacobs) old Oil Burner Preventive
Maintenance route cards.
Both include references to old Richland family
names and addresses and I could even list gallons of
fuel oil purchased and the price!! Since this will be
my initial entry -- I'm hoping one of many -- I will
ask the readers to "vote" on which of these important
pieces of Richland memorabilia they would like me to
share. In order to keep Maren from being flooded with
responses, I would ask that we proceed with the vote
in a systematic way:
A-D - vote on Monday
E-L- vote on Tuesday Etc.
Please vote for which set of lists you would like
to see- the Oil Delivery or the Preventive Maintenance
and where my opening venue should be- the Big Pool or
Adrian's (exotic flavor)...
If these first two lists don't work out, I'm
holding the "killer" list in reserve- my old TCH (Tri-
City Herald) route book!!!
So all you fellow Bombers- vote early and vote
often.
And Brad- thanks for the inspiration (is that what
they call rip off in show business??).
Bomber cheers

don't understand my musical genius... or Spudnuts

Re: 30th Reunion
It's gonna be here before you know it. July 18-20.
Message from the reunion committee:
"Registration deadline is July 1, so get your
registrations in the mail ASAP! If you register later
(and yes, we will take late registrations), some items
may be unavailable (such as shirts, glasses, etc.).
We sincerely want everyone who can possibly attend
to come to the Reunion, but your cooperation in getting
the forms and monies into us in a timely manner is
greatly appreciated. We have to pay for the events in
advance, so we need to have as accurate a count and as
much money up front as possible.
The Reunion Committee has made a genuine effort to
make this Reunion affordable while still offering a
quality and enjoyable event that will appeal to all
those attending. So, without further ado, send the
forms and the bucks into our Treasurer, Gina Brauer
Begalka at 2005 Howell in Richland, right now! (Note
that Gina can be reached at 509 943-3689 for all of

form (to print and send) are at

Re: Back to the Desert
After 30 years, I finally made it back to
Richland. My wife (Jeanette Haberman '73) and I
attended her parent's 50th.
The place has certainly grown, yet somehow stayed
the same. Uptown doesn't look much different, but not
only was there a Richland McDonald's, (I used to joke
that my home town had yet to have one, and I had eaten
at all 13 in Tokyo), there was a Jack in the Box!
Having lived in San Diego for 25 years, Jack becomes a
staple. The company headquarters there. Alas, Iowa has
yet to experience the joy of those greasy 99 cent
tacos. (I had two.) Went to Spudnut, as maple bars
are very hard to come by in the Midwest and east.
Jen likes those. I say if you are going to eat a dough
nut, throw some custard in it. It was nice to get back
to the desert for a few days, and the Columbia has
always been much nicer to watch, than the Mississippi.
After being home a couple of weeks, Jen and I took
the Harley for a ride through the back roads of Iowa
(we have many of those), and came across Bennett,
Iowa, home of the Bombers. That is enough to get a
laugh out of anyone. Population is less than 500, and
the entire school district brags almost 300 students.
I will have to return there, and see what the history
behind that, reveals.

sprinklers are rare, and God waters the lawn.

Re: accordion
How many years did you take accordion lessons from
Fred Grazzini? I started taking them in 3rd grade and
quit when I entered 7th grade... school didn't offer
accordion in the band, and I couldn't find time, or
didn't want to find time, to practice at home and be
bothered with Mr. Grazzini coming to the house once a
week for an hour. Wish I had never quit, now, but that
is always the way it goes. I had my accordion til
after my first daughter was born, then sold it to
a guy in a bar who played country-western music on
it... sounded so funny for country-western music to
come out of that thing... only things I had ever
played on it were waltzes, polkas and other "normal"
stuff for the accordion!!!!! sounded better with
country music, or maybe, it was just the guy playing
it was better than the original owner!

Re: Club 40 in September
I have a minor correction to make with regards to
Bill Witherup's ('53) schedule during the Club 40
week-end. Bill will be regaling his fellow classmates
on Friday (Sept 5th) during their gathering between
2pm and 5pm. Bill will also be at the Community Center
on the following Saturday between 2pm and 4pm. The
latter is strictly a commercial event as he will be
selling copies of his books. As far as I know there
will be no "poet face off" between he and Bill Wilkins
('51). Yes you can all breathe a sigh of relief over
that piece of news.
So, Class of 1953, contact Norma Loescher Boswell
Everyone else who is eligible and interested in
attending, go the the Club 40 web site at

your check or money order to the address on the form.
We may not yet have on-line registration, but we do

We will spend the 4th watching Larry Mattingly's ('60)

Does anyone have any recollections of Della? If so,
would you write in to the Sandstorm or email me. She

Now there's a name out of the past. Weekly piano

parents and I had different ideas about music when my
mother threw out my Jerry Lee Lewis records. I guess
they thought all the party goers would gather around

Hey, Linda, you could have played that old

Used to be the bike ride was better then the bike
show. The friends along the way, the camaraderie, and
those make shift parties.
Rode to bike week this year from Iowa, and saw one
other bike (my riding partner's) for the first two
days. As we plugged along in the 37° weather, and day
and a half of rain, the trailers just kept rolling
by. Some waived, most ignored us, embarrassed, most
likely. Some people were parking their trailers in
Georgia, and riding into Daytona. Out of shame, I am sure.
The weather got warmer, as we got south, and by
the time we got there, our bikes had dried mud, salt,
and whatever else was on the road, stuck to them. We
had such a blast getting there, we washed our bikes,
let our butts rest for two days, and headed back
Early. Leaving 88° weather for the snow. What a blast
the trip was, and bike week was okay, too.

Arkansas is quite a place. It was kinda hard to

fok, along with their computers (Commodore 64s), only
use a nineteen letter alphabet. They had not learnt
all them there other letters yet!
Saw a lot of road kill armadillos on the roadways

stew for all the kin. Mighty tasty! Rated right up

All in all, it was a nice trip, but the one

that is this - "If an Arkansas couple got a divorce,
would they still be considered cousins?"
Take care,

To: Class of 1952 and friends of Alfred Johnson (RIP)
Alfred was a dear good friend of mine and I could
write a book about our good times in high school and I
will miss him. I thought that I had him talked in to
coming to our 50th reunion last year but at the last
moment he backed out.
We both had '40 Ford coupes in our junior and
senior years and if you know how small they could be
(his had a make shift bench seat and mine was an opera
seat model) it was a tight fit to get two couples in!
We enjoyed the ditch bank and hay stack parties that
went on during our days and going to the out of town
ball games. Al and I decided to have good fun in our
senior year and we did!
I moved to Richland in the last quarter of my
freshman year which was 1949, and I met a lot of the
great people from the class of 1951 and 1952. Then
cars came into our lives and the close-knit
friendships became smaller and have continued to be
great friends ever since.
I talked to Alfred's brother, Duane Johnson ('52)
the other day and hope to see him this summer when we
head north. Always looked forward to hearing Duane
singing "Moving On" (a Hank Williams song) and, if I
have it right it was with Bill Large?

Note to all Class of '63:
My address in the reunion memory book should say
VA for the state rather than WA, but the zip code is
correct, so it should work anyway. We don't use snail
much anyway, at least among Bomber alumni.
Deepest thanks to everyone who had a hand in
making the reunion the warm (despite the weather) and
wonderful time it was. Rosalie, Dick, Linda, Dean,
Anita, Jim, Janice, Sue and Jim were just the most
visible, I know many others contributed a lot of time
and effort. The food was tremendous, the activities
were fun, and it just felt good to find out where
everyone has been and what they've been doing. I
should be able to send in a few pictures in a couple
of days when I get some updated software installed.
We had a family reunion, too, as all five of my
sisters were in town that weekend. Glenda Burdsall
('63) who lived next door to us on Turner even joined
us at Mom's apartment to share a little of our joy. It
also felt good to bring Karen Kleinpeter ('63)
together with my sisters Diana ('64) and Cecilia ('65)
- they were best friends during high school and
before, discovered Pooh together, and occasionally my
sisters were irritated that Karen and I were friends,
too.
Being at church with the family prevented me from
joining the memorial for our deceased classmates, but
I was thinking of Brock Erickson, who was my best
friend in junior high. We were fixtures at each others
houses for a few years, and he even joined us for a
week's vacation at some lake one summer. His first
question to my Mom whenever he came over was "got any
cold pancakes?" - she always saved any leftovers for
him, and he would put peanut butter and jelly on them.
I wish I could have been at the memorial, it would
have been a blessing to learn more of what God is
doing in everybody's life.
Warmest regards, ecb3 - from Reva, VA, where we are
now more than 15" of rain over normal for the year,
after a 3-4 year draught - remnants of hurricane Bill
dumped another 2" on us in the last 24 hours, but 90

the street, then the house number, then the letter

It also has little reports about how many houses
were appraised, how many houses are vacant, etc.

We played Apple Tree in Yakima on Monday, senior
day. If you haven't played it, you should... at least
once. The restaurant & the coarse itself are great.
The challenge is the green that is shaped like an
apple. This green is surrounded by water. You get one
shot. If you don't make it, you have to hit from the
drop area. I tried twice and both went into the water.
Judy, my wife, was on in one and landed between 35 and
40 feet from the pin. She was just off the green. I
walked to my ball and was directly in line with Judy's
line. She took her putter and putted the ball. I
watched that ball break to the left and she hit the
flag pole and dropped the ball into the cup. A birdie!
Wow, was I impressed! I am not going to tell you what
I shot. Good golfing to all.

It is the 4th of July... hope all grads are having
a great time... I remember the 4th of July many years
ago. After fireworks fired at the Bomber bowl, Larry
Holloway ('64), Dave Sowden and I, slept out and about
4:30am went to Col Hi and found several un-fired M80s.
They had short fuses but could still be lit quickly.
M80s were awesome... we thought. After all, if you all
remember even now, they are the loud booms in the sky
in the fire works displays... Well to make a long
story short. The drain pipe on the gym wall was a
perfect CANNON we figured and proceeded to fire away...
What an awesome sound, Boom, Boom, BOOM... it echoed
across the south Richland air space about 5:30am.
About the 4th or 5th round, we heard our Richland's
finest and all the sirens from all different directions.
I can only think what they thought: still being a
government town, the loud booms, like bombs or
explosions... We knew then we had to clear the area
fast... Running and throwing handfuls of the
fireworks heading for hiding spots across Thayer Dr.
Not being able to hear much after the loud booms,
running for our lives knowing we were gonna be shot on
sight. Never at that time did I realize the cherry
lights on the police cars were so bright... even that
early in the morning... Wow! What 4th that was...
Maybe a few Bombers out there remember that morning...
awaking to the sounds of booms and wailing of sirens.
Not till Viet Nam did I hear such load sounds. That
drain pipe is still there, long silent and never fired
again... What a 4th that was...

Hey, Bombers...
Just sat here, 7am, 4 July, catching up on the
Sandstorm mail I missed while I was out of town. I've
got two 4th of July gigs to work at later today. It
was so cool to read the last week of notes from you
all.
So, where was I out of town to? You might ask.
Richland, WA. Yup... drove by RHS (where did they move
Col-Hi?) a bunch of times. Seems a guy on Goethals
wants me to come to work with him at his DJ/Audio/
Video/Multimedia Show company. Guess I'm moving this
fall. What a trip!!! Swore in June '65, that I'd never
come back... well, except, to visit Mom/Dad for a few
days when there was a Col-Hi reunion. I've learned 2
things in life: 1. Be careful what you pray for.
2. Be careful what you swear about.
So, to all those folks anywhere who are planning
parties, conventions, reunions, corporate events,
school dances, etc., please check in with me.
http://www.blacktiedeejays.com/ I'll post directions
to my new website as soon as it's ready.

Re: Independence Day
Okay, confession is good for the soul, huh? Have
to admit that 4th of July tends to make me happy that
my kids are grown and I'm single again! Has little to
do with 'independence' and much to do with relief
that I don't have to deal with the worry and stress
involved with kids and spouse who HAD to have fireworks
with the biggest bang and most altitudinous glitter
available! I'm watching the neighbors in good old
Bomberville setting off lots of expensive (and mostly
illegal) fire works, and enjoying the sights, and
deploring the noise that incites my 150# dog to try to
crawl into my lap. If I still lived in Puyallup I
might have tried to make it to Patti Jones Ahrens' ('60)
to watch the 'real' show, but since I hate the crowds
at Columbia Park, I'm content to watch the neighborhood
bad boys set off the Indian fireworks they spent mucho
bucks on. Any body out there remember the good old
days when Richland had their own fireworks display at
the good old Bomber Bowl?? Have to admit that I miss
that, too. Even when my Mom wouldn't brave the crowds
to actually go there, (My Dad seemed to always have to
work Swing shift on 4th of July!) we could see most of
the aerial display from our little precut on Abbot.
And it helped, of course, that the trees in the few
blocks between Bomber Bowl and our house weren't real
tall in those days!
I do hope all my Bomber brothers and sisters had a
great holiday, with 'safe and sane' celebrations, and
most of all that we all took the time to contemplate
our good fortune and freedoms--and offer up prayers of
thanksgiving for the great blessings of our good
fortune and freedoms as well!

Mikie is just kidding. Both of his parents were
born there in DeQueen, AR, not far from you, about 54

with some genuine muskidine jam that a nephew had put
up. We also had some pinto beans, ham hocks, cornbread
and chow chow. The nephew who made the jam also had a
croppie fish fry for us with hush puppies etc. to die
for... Nothing quite like southern cooking.

Re: Fantastic Fourth
What a day we had on the Fourth of July. My wife
Noi and I got up early to head to the Seattle Center
for the swearing-in ceremony for new citizens. One of
Noi's friends was one of the 433 (about to be) new
Americans. When Noi received her citizenship some
years ago, it was at a small ceremony at the INS
office. This once a year major event on the Fourth is
quite different, and is really something to see. The
fact that we were blessed with by far the best Fourth
of July weather in over 30 years in the Seattle area
was certainly icing on the cake. After all the
festivities were over, we took Noi's friend and her
husband and son out for a late lunch or early dinner.
Even after all of that fun and festivity, we still
had time to head home for a nap before it was time to
freshen up in preparation for the REAL event of the
big day. We were soon heading south to Brown's Point
and Patti Jones Ahrens ('60) home to watch the Tacoma
fireworks produced by Larry Mattingly ('60). After a
couple of wrong turns, we finally found our way to
Patti's driveway and a great group of Bombers,
neighbors, friends and family that made us feel
welcome and right at home. There could scarcely be a
better place to watch the Tacoma fireworks than from
Patti's back yard, with its astoundingly sweeping view
of all of Commencement Bay and the City of Tacoma. And
since everyone in Patti's neighborhood seemed to be
having their own Fourth blowouts, the "local"
fireworks kept us entertained all evening while we
waited for Larry's Big Show. The first fellow in a
Bomber shirt that I introduced myself to at the party
turned out to be Tom Hughes ('56) who was a friend of
by older brother Jack Hanthorn ('56 RIP) back in their
school days. I ended up chatting with Tom for most of
the rest of the evening, reliving many common memories
from those long ago days.
Before long, the BIG fireworks across the Bay
started up accompanied by patriotic music on the
radio. What a magnificent show it was. It was the R2K
show multiplied by 10, or even by 100. Larry is
nothing short of a master. He even managed to slip in
a couple of big, beautiful Green and Gold blasts among
all the other marvelous stuff. It seems somewhat
inadequate to merely say "Thank you, Larry" but maybe
that it is a heartfelt "thank you" makes it a little
better. The same goes for you Patti, thank you so much
for extending your hospitality to your fellow Bombers,
we really enjoyed it all so very much.
Special note to Maren ('63 & '64):
I took the remainder of my film from the Class of
'63 Reunion along with the film from Patti's bash in
to the drugstore for processing today, so I should be

so terribly hard for all of us to watch our parents
grow old and suffer, and even though we know that they
won't have to suffer any longer, their demise lives an
empty spot in our souls. I will always remember Jean
as a lady who not only lived the very busy life of a
doctor's wife, and mother of three children, but also
was the best cook in the whole world. When I went over
to Ruthie's house, growing up , the wonder smells that
embraced their house, were more than a little kid
could stand!!! The meals she would prepare! And, in
the year 1964 Jean won a national prize in the
Pillsbury Bake-off for her banana split cake!!! She
left a legacy to her daughter, Ruth Alice, because
Ruthie is also an incredible cook!! We will miss Jean
a great deal, and as Ruthie told me today, her Mom is
in heaven now and she is 30 years old all over again,

Information to pass on to your children or grandchildren.
I completely rewrote the second half of the poem I
wrote called We Still Ask Why? I am a slow writer and
sometimes it takes a number of drafts to get the words
right, as Al Parker can testify to from when I use to
write into the Sandbox. I think the new version reads
better and better depicts what I was trying to say. I
was moved to write the Attack on America poems because
people seem to be going back to being complacent, or
maybe it is just denial. I was moved to write the
Support Our Troops poems because I see a country that
is lagging right now in its visible support for our
troops, who are still dying everyday. My heart is
breaking for them, as it looks like they will be
facing danger in Iraq for a long while.
May our leaders be wise, and our commerce increase,
And may we experience the blessings of peace.
May our leaders be wise, and our conflicts decrease,
And may we experience the blessings of peace.
Someone else wrote the first verse and I added the second verse.
I know Maren likes to keep it warm and fuzzy in here,
so I had better close before she gives me the hook.
To our men and women in uniform, past, present, and
future....God Bless You and Thank You!

Re: July 4th revisited
This year my husband and I spent the 4th in
Central, AK -- an old mining town about 120 miles
north of Fairbanks. My husband's family mined up there
in the '30s when every creek (pronounced here with a
short e) was a potential gold mine. This year the
hotel and hot springs were closed but it used to the
highlight of summer to be at the springs for the 4th
of July Miners' Picnic. Now that was a party. This
year it was so quiet that I began to long for just a
car to drive by--3 did and 1 stopped for a visit. Last
year we spend the 4th in Tulsa, OK on the way to a
family reunion. My daughter and her husband, who both
grew up in interior Alaska, saw their first, yes I
said first, fireworks display on the 4th of July. To
be honest it was the first fireworks display on the
4th that I'd seen in over 30 years. Let's see, would I
rather see fireworks on a warm summer evening or at 50
below on New Years Eve? Hmmmm . . . .

I have to rave about our neighborhood 4th
celebration. I think I live in the best neighborhood
in Port Orchard. This year was our 2nd annual 4th
parade. It was started so the kids in the neighborhood
could decorate their bikes and ride up and down
pretending they were in a parade. This year some of
the fathers decorated their riding lawn mowers in
patriotic themes and rode along with the younger kids.
One of the guys I work with plays the bag pipes so he
led the parade down the street, followed by a red
Bronco pulling a trailer decorated for the smaller
children to ride in. The parade had just about
everyone in the neighborhood in it, so there was just
a small audience, but what fun. Later in the day one
neighbor has a BBQ and we all congregate there to
watch the combined fireworks display with everyone
contributing theirs. It was quite spectacular (I'm
sure not up to our own professional Bombers display),
but such fun to "Ooh!" and "Aaw!" watching from the
front lawn.

Anyone have suggestions on what to see and how to see
it best. Two weeks will be spent in Tuscany at a
monastery while my daughter takes some courses for
her masters and I get to learn without having to be
graded. We will have time there to make some side
trips. It is near Azzeza. I expect to be able to spend
a couple of days in Venice (suggestions for hostels,
B and B, or hotels) and we finish the trip with one
day in Milan before leaving from that airport (maybe a
suggestion for a hotel near there). And I don't speak
the language. I've been practicing, but languages are
just not my thing. German in High School is all and I
was really bad.

Since you practically lived at our house don't be
a pulling that old stuff on me. You know plenty about
southern cooking. Chow chow is a relish made out of
green tomatoes, onions etc. Muskidine jam is made out
of muskidines, silly girl. They grow wild and latch on
to trees as a parasite. They look like grapes and have
pulp like grapes. They make the best jam in the whole

Re: Trip to Italy
To: Joyce Stinsman Komac ('68)
You and your daughter will have a great time in
Italy!! I'll try to keep this brief. My wife and I
went with another couple and we used the trains for
our destinations. It worked out great and kept the
cost down. Need to plan each day ahead, so you know
where you're going and how to get there. We used 2nd
class on the trains and was very satisfactory. Don't
need reservations, just get your tickets as soon as
you get to the train station...leave early in case
you're delayed in traffic or whatever. The taxis will
take advantage of you if they find out you're
American; so have address and information on the hotel
you want to be taken to. You might want to check your
map ahead of time. When we arrived in Rome, our taxi
took us the long way (about 10 minutes) to our hotel,
only to find out the next day it was only two blocks
away. So be aware!
Lots to see in Rome, there's so much history.
Probably the first place to go would be the Vatican.
Buy your tickets ahead of time at your hotel for the
tour package. They will tell you where to catch the
bus going to the Vatican. That will be an all day
experience, St. Peters Square, Basilica and of course
the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo. Depending on where
you're hotel is, you could walk or take the subway to
the Colosseum and near by is the Roman Forum going
back to the beginning of "AD"; keep walking towards
the end and up the hill toward the Campidoglio. The
Pantheon built 123 AD is a must; you can do that on a
walking tour along with the Fountain of Trivi ("Three
coins in a Fountain") and other historical landmarks.
You can take the subway to the Spanish Staircase and
have a meal of your choice nearby. Watch for
"pickpockets", or "purse snappers", especially near
tourist areas (money belts are great).
You both will love Venice!! We made our reservation
from our hotel in Rome. Make the reservation as soon
as you can. We ended up in Lido, across the water from
Venice and used the water taxi, it wasn't that bad.
For convenience, you might want to stay in Venice, but
will cost more Lire$$$. Look for "Murano" glass items
in the shops. Go to the top of the Bell Tower in St.
Marks Square, but be aware those "huge" bells go off
every hour!!
It looks like you're not far from Florence, it's
beautiful city with lots of history including the
famous museum of "David" by Michelangelo. You've got
to have "Gelotto" (like ice cream only much better).
If you have a chance to go to Ovierto on a plateau
overlooking the Tuscany area...I recommend it!! You'll
find Milan interesting, but allow lots of time to get
to the airport from your hotel.......it's about 45
minutes away due to the traffic. Again use taxis that
are waiting in line, and find out ahead of time the
price. There are some independents that really take
you for a ride!! Milan is where fashion starts, it's a
great place to buy anything that's leather...the
quality is the best and prices are great.
I tried to keep it short, but tried to give you
some ideas for planning. Don't take any expensive
jewelry and leave valuables at home. Credit cards work
great and there are plenty of ATM's around. Try eating
at the restaurants where the locals go, some are below
ground level like in New York. You'll have a great
time in Italy, enjoy.
Can't really help you on places to stay. You
shouldn't have any problem if you make reservations
ahead of time. You're also going at a good time of the
year. Email me if you want more information.

Re: 4th of July
Thanks to the several of you who made the nice
comments here and direct to me about the 4th. I dug
around in the magazine last week and found 3 more of
the big yellow shells with the green ball center and
found places in the program for them. I am delighted
that the Bombers at Patti Jones Ahren's ('60) party
spotted them. What a nice thing for Patti to do, to
host that group of Bombers on the 4th. But it is
typical to her dedication to friends. My hat's off to
her.
My 4th this year was a particular pleasure in that
a cousin that I had not seen in 45 years showed up
with another cousin, Claudia Moberg Butler ('70).
Barbara was in town for a technical conference and
called Claudia who lives in Seattle. I was able to
get them out on the VIP pier with me. What a treat!
I hope everyone had a fun and safe 4th of July.

Re: fruits of the vine
Well, sure- muskidine (aka muscadine) IS a grape-
an American grape. In the part of Georgia that I
passed through, years ago, they were called
scuppernongs (don't know the etymology of that one).
While I'm here I'd like to offer my old classmate,
Pam Swain, my bootleg copy of a live Jerry Lee Lewis
set that includes "Lady of Spain" (if your mother
don't mind). Semi-seriously, the great rock pianists
were pretty versatile. Little Richard's band was an
acoustic ensemble- stand-up bass, sax, drums, &
Richard (who was pretty electrifying, I guess). No
guitar (until much later, maybe...)
Speaking of guitars, though, if Ms. Russell still
possesses that fine little slot-head parlor guitar
(from her picture of the dueling guitarists), now,
THAT might be a musical treasure, all by itself (oh,
sure- it'd be even better if someone were playing, I
guess).
Another old classmate, Grant Ross, had a guitar
like that in 'his family' (& I found it in a closet at
his house, once)... wasn't electric, though- so it
wasn't 'cool'- THEN. Some of those little gems are
worth as much as a Fender Strat these days (maybe
more, to the folks who love to play them); and, if
they last another 100 years, they'll be the American
equivalents of Stradivarius violins. ^..^

Don't worry about the language most Europeans
learn at least two languages and English is on the top
of the list. I'm a primary school teacher in France
and I try to teach English from third grade to fifth
grade. We have to keep learning this language till the
end of high school! Even if they never went to an
English speaking country, which is the best way to
learn a language quickly and efficiently, they know
far more of your language than you do of theirs (as
you confessed).
The areas you'll visit are highly touristic and

"You're welcome!" to all who wrote in or emailed me about
what a good time was had on the Fourth of July. It ended
too quickly.
Larry Mattingly ('60) and his company did an
outstanding job. There were new fireworks that made it
very special. Especially the Green and Gold that seemed
to burst towards us like they belonged just to us
Bombers. Thanks Larry. Fireworks displays take a lot of
dedicated people to put them off for our pleasure.
Mostly volunteers.
Being in Pierce County we are allowed to set off
fireworks all day. I'm still finding the remnants. Each
piece being picked up with a reminder of what a fantastic
day. Taking a bunch of pictures put me by the group that
was setting off the fireworks. I asked that "all the
pyros get closer" for the picture. My eight year old
granddaughter Sabryna raised up like she was going to
model saying, "I'm the newest pyro." With a giggle I
decided within a couple of years I am sending her to
Larry for more lessons.

Herr Stoebner was the German teacher, in 1965-66 at
least. He wasn't a German immigrant but rather grew up in
South Dakota. His parents spoke German in the home and so
he taught it. His major was actually Social Studies as I
recall.
Two years with Herr Stoebner was not much foundation
in the language as I discovered when I entered WSU and
started advanced German.
But I will always remember fondly the year-long
investigation Mike Lonergan ('67) conducted into the
theft of the gavel we used in home room in Herr
Stoebner's class. If you knew Mike, he was a grand
comic. We received weekly updates on the progress of the
investigation. The gavel was eventually (last home room
class of the year oddly enough!) found to have been
stolen by a secret band of Nazis that met in a basement
in Richland. Pictures were provided that showed the Nazi
flag and a collection of WWII German gear. The clincher
was the gavel itself in the hands of an apparent Nazi
with the brim of his hat pulled down over his eyes.
Funny, the gavel holder was about the same size as
Mike. Do you suppose ..... naw, Mike wouldn't pull Herr
Stoebner's leg for a full year, would he?

Monique's [Mangold ('80)] note on Europeans'
knowledge of languages was conservative and/or modest. My
family and I lived in Barcelona for two years; and, in
the language area, it was an experience in shame for us.
I met so many Europeans who spoke three, four, even five
languages -- and I wasn't hanging out with college
professors. Several times I was approached by someone who
knew I wasn't Spanish; so, making a guess based on my
looks, they would speak to me in German; when I corrected
them, they didn't miss a beat but immediately responded
in English. And most likely that same person spoke
Italian and/or French and Portuguese. And Catalan (the
local language in that part of Spain). It was quite
depressing for me. Of course, in America we generally
start language instruction in schools just after the
point where the brain loses its optimal ability to learn
new languages, usually about 14 from what I've been told.
Usually the people with language facility were well
educated. I did encounter some people who, like some
Americans, seemed to believe that if they spoke loudly
and forcefully enough to the foreigner, she would have a
miraculous breakthrough and be able to understand the
details of what they were trying to get across. The
people I was most grateful to were those who, either
through education or intuition, knew how to slow down and
simplify their own Spanish so that I could understand
them, and who could extrapolate from the assortment of
words/phrases/incorrectly conjugated verbs that I would
produce, what I was trying to communicate.

Chocolate gravy is the BEST! I had never heard of
chocolate gravy until we went to Arkansas to see my mom's
family when I was 15 years old. My great-grandmother
fixed it every morning over hot homemade biscuits for
breakfast! YUMMMMMMM!!! And let me tell you, when you are
15 years old you don't want to get up to eat breakfast at
5:00 a.m., but when chocolate gravy is on the menu, you
are at that table. We could always go back to bed after
we ate!
I finally got the family recipe a couple of years

kids and husband think it's totally disgusting to put
chocolate over biscuits; but, what do they know?!

Southern Cooking and Being Married 40 Years
There are several in our Class of '63, but Mike ('60)
and I have been married for 40 years come December. We
are midwesterners now, but my heart is still on the west
coast. I think it's a real tribute to Richland and the
way we were raised to still have happy healthy marriages,
good kids, and adorable grandchildren (five under the age
of four).
One of my favorite recipes for perfect gravy comes
from my Southern son-in-law's grandmother. The easy way
to make perfect gravy is to roll a dollop of butter in a
fair amount of flour. Place it in your meat juices and
let it dissolve as you stir -- you will never have lumpy
gravy again. One of the secrets to good Southern cooking
is they always use butter and thanks to my middle
daughter's family she has become a wonderful cook with
some of the best recipes in her file.
Sorry, I missed the reunion; but, I was so impressed
that there was a special service for those of our
classmates who are gone. We have a very special caring
class; I am eternally grateful that I have been a part of

for his winemaking hobby. Muscadine is a variety of grape
(vitis rotund folia) that is a different species from the
familiar European and American species. Scuppernong is a
variety of muscadine like zinfandel or cabernet is a
variety of the European grapes. They are very large and
very sweet and grow in the South. Duplin and Biltmore

the South. In the fall it is almost intoxicating to run

Think it is part of the British heritage. It is a
real fun thing to listen to an Englishman trying to speak
a language other than his own*. Not too bad with the
German, but anything else falls completely apart,
especially Spanish. The Brits do try to pronounce the
words as spelt, and "j"s are pronounced as "j" and not
with the softer "h" sound. And to hear the pronunciation
of "Don Quixote" makes one wonder whom they are speaking

It's understandable that American people are not fond
of learning a foreign language. You just do not need it
(except Spanish for business with Central or South
America maybe). You can travel for miles and not find
anybody speaking anything else than English!
In Europe countries are small and, like France,
surrounded by countries not speaking the language and now
with the European construction and the borders
disappearing we need a common language. Since English is
already used in business and technical fields it is
naturally used universally (some people do not agree of
course).
Anyway, we appreciate all the efforts you make to
speak a few of our languages -- and I particularly
understand when you tell about speaking loudly -- or
otherwise speaking slowly enough that your accent
wouldn't interfere with our understanding!

I must say I am not right for Jeff either as I am
married. I must also confess that even if I was
unmarried, I would have to say that it still wouldn't
work out. Not because of age, not because of interest.
But I am a man.
I take it that matchmaking is not your best skill?

Hey,
Does anyone have a Bomber jacket (medium?) with a
mushroom cloud on the back for sale? Or know where I
might be able to buy one. (I actually still have my
letter, for managing, but didn't feel like buying a
jacket at the time.)
-Geoff Rothwell ('71)
[Geoff -- now here I can help you out. What one does is
to purchase a plain old letterman's jacket in your size.
Then you visit an emblem store to obtain whatever emblems
you want to have sewn on your jacket -- the emblems are
made to order. Then when the emblems arrive you arrange
to have them sewn on (normally by the emblem shop). When
I got my jacket back in 1998 I needed three emblems: R-
Cloud, $50; 3" 'Richland', $16; 3" 'Bombers', $15. It
took about a month from the time I ordered them until
they arrived and were sewn on the jacket (another 22
bucks). I bought my jacket at Dawson-Richards and my
emblems from U.S. Linen (old Richland Laundry); I can
send you a pic if you'd like. What I suggest is to buy
your jacket in Palo Alto (the Stanford athletic
department or a sporting goods store can help you find a
store) and have somebody here in Richland take care of
getting whatever emblems you need and UPS them to you --
Judy Willox ('61) is *really* good at this sort of thing.

I'm smiling as I read the lists of those who are
passing the 40-year married mark. There's something about
staying in the Tri-Cities that encourages stick-to-it-
iveness. Not that I'll ever make it. To do so, I'd have
to find King Charming (no princes need apply) and it
would be the year 2043 before that anniversary!
I'm really writing to ask about parents. My dad came
up in 1943 and spent the rest of his work life out in the
areas. He and Mom (Robert and Deon Jones) passed their
68th anniversary April 17th of this year and are hoping
to make the 70th in 2005. Any records out there that they
need to break?

If my fingers are counting right, Harvey and Sally

The nicest thing Harvey ever did for me was give me this
wonderful sister-in law whom I love dearly. She is every
bit as nice as you all remember and so very dear to our

Re: Class of '60 Website
Hello,
We just discovered this page. Mike Shirey is my
husband and is not able to write or type due to MS, and I
am filling in this for him. He went to high school there
[Col-Hi] (state champion gymnast '58 and '59), but
graduated in Lima, Ohio after his father died in June of
Mike's junior year.
My name is Merrily and we have been married since
Nov., 1994, and were unable to come to the 40th Reunion.
Let us know if there is anything else you would like for
the site.
Thanks.

Zorba's a GIRL??!! Like, I thought of Zorba .....
like in Zorba the Greek. A MANLY kinda guy. Thanks for
the enlightenment. Just don't go too far with that gender
thing, though.
To: Monique [Mangold Beaucour ('80)] (I'm pretty sure
you must be a girl.)
I gotta tell you, you can't hardly get anything done
here in San Diego without you speak a bit of the local
Hispanic dialect ..... and that's on OUR side of the
border. In fact, according to the latest census numbers,
we are ALL minorities here in California; no ethnic group
is a majority. And Hispanic leads whites and blacks, and
all the in-betweens! I'm wishing I'd done Spanish rather
than German with Herr Vas-his-namen.
Now, that all has nothing with my recent decision to
move back to Richland ..... but maybe the flotsam David
Rivers referred to has had some influence. Say, David;
are there a sufficient number of Porta-Potties along the
Columbia ..... and do the boys come out of the water to
use them? Or has Wayne Newton so polluted your mind that
your don't know? Thanks for covering my back, dude.
Shotguns really scare me.
