Also, how many have motorcycles now and what types? I saw thousands of bikes coming into Skagit Valley for the Oyster Run. Unfortunately, they are of an inoperable type, and her condition has been classified as terminal. Her husband, Kelly, just brought her home to the Tri-Cities, and the family is going to stick close and keep her as comfortable as possible. This generation saw seven Russell cousins graduate from Richland High School: Marlene, '62; Linda, '64; Edna, '65; Dianne and Lloyd, '67; Charles (Alden), '69; and Ruth, '71. Plus, Charles (Alden) provided two daughters, Charlene (not sure of year) and Darlene, '93, to carry on the Bomber tradition. If anyone out there would like to say a prayer for, or send a card or their thoughts to Marlene and Kelly, it would be much appreciated. Send me an email for their home address. Marlene is very close to her sisters and brother, Linda, Dianne, and Charles Alden, who could also use your support through this difficult time. Send me an email for their home address. Emails for any of the Russells listed can be sent c/o myself. My email address is at the top of this entry. I will make sure all messages get to the right Russell. Right now, it seems I am the only family member actively checking emails, etc. -- daily -- so that should work fairly well. I will give the list updates on Marlene's condition. I cannot tell you how much reading your letters of support to the various alumni has helped re-affirm my faith in decent, caring people. There is such a sense of community and connection in the daily Alumni Sandstorm... I just wish I had discovered it years ago! Keep well and keep safe, -Ruth Russell Pierson ('71) ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Rob Peutz ('73) Re: Hogs/Scooters To: Bill Didway (66) I ride a Harley Low Rider, and I ride it every chance I get (over 26K miles this year). Did not know about the Oyster Run, but would surely put it on my list of things to do. I made it to Daytona, Sturgis and Milwaukee this year, and having just retired from the Navy after 30 years, 2 months and 2 days (but who counts)?, I did a 6,000 mile road trip to the west coast. Missed WA, but got to Oregon and Idaho on my way to Yellowstone, via Baja California. I am sure my wife, Jeanette Haberman ('73) would jump at the opportunity to make a run to the evergreen state, next year. We both have siblings in the Seattle and Tri-City area. Would appreciate any info on the Anacortes Oyster Run. Fresh seafood in Iowa is harder to find than mountains. An opportunity to get back and get our hands on some dungeness crab would be a welcome treat. -Rob Peutz ('73) ~ Where the frost is on the ground, and it takes warm gloves and two pair of wool socks to winterize the Hog! *************************************** *************************************** That's it for today. I want to thank all the folks who helped out in making the event possible and hope to we get as great a turnout next year. Bomber Cheers, -Mary Triem Mowery, a '47 Bomber ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Bill Berlin ('56) Re: Alumni Sandstorm in China I just got back from our yacht building site in China and was able to access the Alumni Sandstorm every day. It just amazed our Chinese staff that I would get "...a letter from my Secondary (High School) School every day telling me what all of the 'American peoples' are doing..." Every morning when I would come into the office I would be surrounded by six or eight people to see what the news was from Bomberville. When I told them our team name was the "Bombers" and our logo was the Mushroom Cloud, I had to take an hour to tell them what that all meant so now our factory soccer team is called the "Bombs" and they love it. By the way, one of the interested parties is a member of the People's Liberation Army [PLA or the Chinese Army/Navy]. He loves it as does the Party Secretary, who is also a good friend. I suppose it falls into the Chinese category of "crazy American stuff," or something close to that but they sure love it. Re: Anacortes, WA Oyster Run We are moving to Anacortes full time in about 60 days but I have been going to the Oyster Run for years. This year (last weekend) there were 15,000 bikes up there and they sold 20,000 oysters warmed and opened on big barbecues. It is really a well run event and the town comes out in droves to see all the "Hogs", Roadsters, and Customs, etc. I have a Soft Tail Classic Sport and soon the drive will be just 4.7 miles from garage to the Run. Usually it is held the last weekend in September and the weather this year was 76 F (23 C) and I saw a lot of bikes from British Columbia, Alberta, a couple from Alaska, New Mexico, NY, South Carolina and naturally, WA or OR. Oddly enough, not a lot of CA rigs but they were probably staying home for the recall election. A lot of people relate Harley's to trouble but there were only two arrests all weekend and the average in Anacortes on a "normal" Saturday and Sunday is seven. The Anacortes Police, to their credit, just let things roll along, no heavy handed stuff, and do their job. People who get out of line, whether they have a Harley or a Kenworth, need to get busted but the Oyster Run violations are really very minimal. -Bill Berlin ('56) ~ Final two months in Seattle, then to Anacortes and back to China ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Suzie Gunderson Chiles ('60) Re: Club 40 Reunion CD To: John Adkins ('62) Received our CD yesterday. Thank you for such prompt service. Our check went out Tuesday. And thank you, John, for caring enough about us Bombers to take time out of your busy schedule to do such a grand job of "putting us in pictures". It was a blast for Bob [Chiles {58)] and me to look at the pictures together. We tried to see who would be first to recognize someone. Neither of us did very well. We did enjoy seeing Carl ('58) and Shirley Armstrong Dvorak ('61). They look wonderful, as did everyone! Rainbows & Butterflies to all, -Suzie Gunderson Chiles ('60) ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Ed Quigley ('62) Re: Oyster Run To: Rob Peutz ('73) I think the Oyster Run is always the last week in September, as that particular weekend has a good long record of nice weather. Last year, there were approximately 25,000 bikes, and this year, they had expected twice that! Don't know whether they got that or not, but people ARE referring to it as "Sturgis West"! Put it on your calendar for next year; you'll love it! -Ed Quigley ('62) ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Deedee Willox Loiseau ('64) Re: Marlene Russell Kallioinen ('62) To: Ruth Russell Pierson ('71) I am the facilitator for our church's email prayer chain. We go to First Baptist in Kennewick on 27th. Today (Friday, 10-3), I got a prayer request for Marlene, which I quote here: "Thurs, Aug 25, Marlene went to Dr for mild headache. Tues. 8/30 she had learned she has 4 inoperable tumors in brain, 2 in her body and has 3 weeks to 3 months to live. She is in her mid-50s. Please pray for her husband, Kelly and the rest of the Russell family." This was forwarded to approximately 150 people in our church, so they will all be praying for Marlene and the family. I know we have a loving God who will hold her in His hands. You have my heart. -Mercedes "Deedee" Willox Loiseau ('64) ~ Burbank, WA ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Bill Didway ('66} For all those interested in the Anacortes Oyster Run.... http://www.oysterrun.org It is mainly a Harley Davidson show but all types and kinds of bikes show up. I don't ride a Harley as I have just graduated up in size from Honda Trail 90's to an XT225. Where the blacktop ends and the gravel begins is where the fun begins for me. Not single track trails but logging roads and fire roads and old dirt roads. Dual sport riding. Georgia Rushworth ('66) and Rob Peutz ('73) should think about making next years Oyster Run on their Harleys. Maybe a "Bomber Run" from Richland. Must be more riders out there. -Bill Didway ('66} ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Betti Avant ('69) Re: Homecoming Tonight (Friday) is homecoming here in Goodland, Kansas. Their football team is 3-1 going in. They lost a heartbreaker last week 10-7 in overtime. In my day they never played overtime, just settled for the tie. Bomber cheers to all, -Betti Avant ('69) ~ Goodland, KS - There has been a nip in the air the past couple of weeks and at other times it has been almost too warm. Oh well, it is October. ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Brad Upton ('74) To: Don Andrews ('67) Thanks for your kind words about my show in Portland. I'm currently on MS Zaandam...tomorrow morning we'll be going through the Panama Canal. Monday night I disembark in Cartagena, Colombia and get to spend the night before flying home on Tuesday. I'm told there are plenty of bombers (something about being leftists) in Colombia, so maybe I'll see some! -Brad Upton ('74) *************************************** *************************************** That's it for today. She was at our Club 40 reunion on Friday evening, Sept. 5th. I heard later that she went to the hospital on Saturday, but have not heard any news since. She and I knew each other at Richland (Col) High and we enjoyed a good visit that Friday evening. I'm anxious to receive any news of her condition, as well as an address where I could send a card. Thanks so very much. -Claris Van Dusen Troutman ('48) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [In case anybody else missed it, see yesterday's Sandstorm for an entry from Mary. -Maren ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Betti Avant ('69) Re: homecoming victory Well, the Goodland (KS) Cowboys pulled out their homecoming game, 28-27. On the opponents' four touchdowns they went for the 2-point conversion every time. The commentators wondered if they even had a kicker for extra points. Well, it turns out they do (he kicked a 32-yard field goal) to make up for the first three failed PATs. Goodland's defense stopped them at the goal line on their 4th PAT attempt, that would have put them into OT for the second week in a row. It's great winning a game of that caliber. How is the Bomber squad doing? Have a good one, -Betti Avant ('69) ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Ruth Russell Pierson ('71) Re: Marlene Russell Kallioinen ('62) update Just wanted to thank those of you who have already emailed me for Marlene and Kelly's address, or sent messages, and, of course, DeeDee Willox Loiseau ('64) who let us know about the prayer chain at the First Baptist in Kennewick for Marlene. I have a guardedly positive thing to report about Marlene's condition--- the doctors have come up with a treatment of sorts that they think Marlene may be able to tolerate with minimal discomfort and risk to her heart---all I actually know is that it involves steroids and injections of some sort. They will be trying it out to see whether it helps her enough to make putting her through it worthwhile. The best medicine for her right now continues to be the love and support of family and friends. Thank you so much for your caring response! I will continue to pass on their address for cards and notes to those who email me and ask for it. And I have been printing out the email messages I have received, plus those that have been posted on the Sandstorm, to pass on to the family---every word of encouragement will get to Marlene and Kelly, and the rest of their family. It looks like a fun project for me this winter to help me keep my mind off "Other Problems". Thanks, -Gus Keeney ('57) ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: John Campbell ('63) Re: Oyster Run I attended the Oyster Run this year and it exceeded my expectations. My wife and I attended the Blues Festival at Port Townsend on Saturday and rode up Whidbey and across Deception Pass the next morning to Anacortes. We attended Sturgis last year, and I agree that Anacortes is a nice local alternative - not as rowdy, but a lot of bikes in one place. They also had a nice car show. Traffic can be a bear, so you might want to seek accommodations for Sunday night. The small ferries are first come first served for cycles, so plan accordingly. The only downside was a real shortage of bathroom facilities for all us beer drinking bikers. -John Campbell ('63) ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Jeff Michael ('65) Re: Trippin' Bomber Folks: What a long, strange trip it has been! I just finished reading all the back "Sandstorms" I missed on the commute to Richland. The drama started 10August. I just last night got full internet communications reestablished. Just as a taste of the fun... as soon as my DSL was hooked up in our house, I started to do the install. I had used my lap top on- line a few times at my office, so figured this process would be a snap. I no sooner get into the activation phase of the disc, and a dialog box pops up and says by computer will shut down in 60 seconds. And it did! When it restarted, I restarted the install process. The #^&&^%$ box popped- up again... and shut down. Each time this happened, it would happen sooner. I kept trying to race through the install thinking I could beat the pop-up and things would be fine. But no. So, I took the laptop to work again... had no trouble. Came back home again and tried next evening. Almost got through the set-up when the evil shut-down box appeared again. Called my DSL provider and was informed that this was the feared "Blaster" virus. He walked me through going to Microsoft for the patch to install. While the patch was downloading, the Blaster reappeared. I watched the screen and the download raced the shutdown. It was like a Mission Impossible segment! The download won by 3 seconds!!! It showed-up once later in the evening while I was on the internet, but I went to the patch again and seem to have stamped it out. I read that some of the Tri-City schools got hit real hard by it. This is just a small taste of the trials and tribulations we have experienced in the move... I might add, that my household goods are still in a moving van, in Portland, I think. But that's a whole 'nuther story. Just a note to all other Bombers that recognize "de Colores"... my wife and I have been involved in numerous Walks and Flights over the past 7 years while in San Diego. We are anxious to get involved in the Tri-Cities. Thanks for asking. -DJ Jeff Michael ('65) ~ Back Home Again In...Richland ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Joe Schmitt ('73) Last night the young men and women of the Richland marching band earned their place in history. They came in first in their division and displayed the best sportsmanship and professionalism that any school could have ask for. To not have been there to watch them compete is truly a loss that can never be replaced. Congratulations to the best, the Richland High School marching band. -Joe Schmitt ('73) ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Larry Davis ('80) - Former Footballer Re: Need my Bomber "Fix" To: All Tri-City area Bombers I need your help! I'm stuck here on the dreary (today) West side (Kent, WA), and I have not been able to get my "Bomber fix". I need your help, I'd love to know how the Bomber football team is doing and like Betti Avant ('69) who wrote in this morning (Sunday), We have not heard any results. Now, I know I'm not alone with my need... I'm looking for several willing Boosters to step up and help us poor, needy, displaced Bomber fans out. I'm hoping for details and I need scuttle-butt (i.e coaches, players, cheer leaders, Officials, fans etc.), too! I live near Kentwood HS, my oldest daughter Marie (born in Richland) goes to KW and all I hear about is Kentwood. Now KW is ranked third in the state and is still undefeated but it was sure nice a few years ago when Richland kicked their booty. Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing from many of you, especially those close to the class of ('80). Oh! to all you WSU Cougar fans, Yeah! Good Job. Wonderful Homecoming. Sorry, Huskies. I am on the task force for the Comprehensive Plan for our city. We have just completed the goal portion of the plan and will be going into the action plan the first week in November. We have a declining population overall (now about 16,000) with an increase in the over 60 group (of which I will soon be a part). There are many parts to the plan with one goal being a plan to increase the interest in the downtown section. We have thought about a walking tour of the historic district, cemetery walks to highlight the lives of men from the different wars, as well as men and women who lived and died in the area, and possibly street dancing. If you have any ideas you would like to share, please let me know. If you would make the subject "Bombers" or something like that, I won't delete it. It seems like I get a lot of mail that I don't recognize that I end up deleting. I am looking forward to being there for the Cool Desert Nights and the '64 reunion next year. The fact is that in order to apply for Social Security benefits (and for a number of other reasons) you will probably need at least one of these documents, either the original or a copy certified by the state that issued it. Figuring out where to go to find the certified copies you need could be confusing -- until now. My brother, Marc ('66), was in the Peace Corps in 71-73, (I think) in Ghana. He taught several science courses at a small college there. Africa was in the middle of a many years drought while Marc was there. I'm not sure he even liked yams before he got there, but after eating them for most of the two years, he won't even look at them now. Did Vicki find out what this young lady will be doing? My husband, David, was in Uganda for almost two years with the Public Health Service instead of going to Viet Nam. Among this interesting and diverse group, they called themselves 'the chicken of the sea' or 'the pubic health service'. Sorry about that, medical humor is often to usually offbeat. While he wasn't actually being shot at as in Viet Nam, he did have the misfortune of landing on the day of Idi Amin's coup d'etat. There was house arrest for several months, meaning everyone could go out to work as long as they were inside their homes by 4pm. He did get beat up a couple times by drunken boarder guards. He has lots of interesting stories. He was offered the honor of being Idi Amin's personal physician... he sadly declined, saying that since he was in Uganda under diplomatic passport he was unable to oblige. Besides, it could have been hazardous to his health. Unfortunately, I didn't know David at this time! I took your concern to the group at lunch today. There was a lot of discussion about having tried doing the luncheon on Saturday's and not gotten very good participation. The general consensus is that there is no "good" day that will fit everybody's calendar. However, since Sunday has generated the best, and by the way, growing, participation, we will continue with our current schedule of holding the Puget Sound luncheons on the 2nd Sunday of each month. The subject of location/distance from the "north end" was also discussed. Again, the general consensus, was that although Fife is not central to Seattle residents, nobody objected to staying where we are. We have regular attendees that come from Lynnwood/Edmonds, and even some that come over from Richland - just for the lunch!! One of today's attendee's is moving from the Seattle area to Anacortes, but says he will continue to attend. So, if you can make it, we'd love to see you. Last Friday my Mom made it to 88 years of life, and I had to work. Somehow, birthdays the day after are just not as fun as on THE day. I finally got her to decide that she would be playing bridge at the Senior Center - this was about two hours before the games began. I called a Richland florist (you all know Arlene's Flowers) to get something delivered to the Senior Center that would call everyone's attention to Mom's birthday. The terrific person (who happens to be a 1962 graduate) and I conversed for a while and as time piddled on we came up with a plan - I bought a big balloon bouquet and she offered to go anywhere I wanted to pick up some goodies for the bridge players. We ended up with several dozen really nice cookies from Albertson's. Making a long story even longer, the cookies and balloons were delivered at the onset of bridge and everyone had a hoot, especially Mom. They all sang happy birthday, hugged, congratulated, patted her, asked her age (and I can't believe this part: she told them!) She was so surprised and thrilled she called me as soon as she got home. I told her about the very nice lady at Arlene's who helped me, and confirmed that her mother and my mother used to play bridge together about 50 years ago! The special service-oriented person I want to give lots of thanks to today and tell you all about is none other than Paula Beardsley Glenn ('62)! I want to point out that she didn't know I was also a Col-Hi grad when she was being so kind to go the extra mile for cookies for my mom. No wonder Arlene's has been in business so many years, with people like Paula providing customer service. Okay enough, and I also want to spread the word that Nadine Smith Heusser ('60) and hub Roger are grandparents for the second time, first time for a girl. Wow, what a surprise to grow up and find out that isn't so. My father and younger sister Rebecca ('77) spent many long hours and did a wonderful history of our family. I encourage any of you who have thought about doing a family tree to do so. And be sure to get all of those wonderful stories of the past. I was about 15 and went to the sold out Paramount in Seattle with my brother (Brian '76) and mom and dad. You can imagine how much fun it was to go to a concert with your parents. Carlin was brilliant. 16 years later I got to perform at a sold out Paramount on that very stage during the finals of the Seattle Comedy Competition. I actually looked out to the area where I had been sitting 15 years earlier...it was a beautiful, personal moment for me. In about '95 I was working at the Maxim Casino in Las Vegas and George Carlin was headlining across the street at Bally's. I wrote a note to him and told him that he was a big influence on me and told him the story about seeing him in Seattle many years earlier. I gave the note to the concierge at Bally's and asked them to deliver it to him. About 2 hours later he called my room and said, "Hey Brad, it' George." We talked for several minutes and he invited me to his show that night and to meet him afterward. I had to do my own show, but as soon as it was over I hustled across the street and caught about the last 15 minutes of his act. Afterward I went backstage to his dressing room and spent about 15 minutes talking with him. He's a great guy (I was surprised how small and elderly he looked in person) with a brilliant mind. He's an icon in the comedy business with how prolific he is in his writing. He did 106 appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. 106 times 6 minutes is over 10 hours of material!!! That's nearly impossible. See him live if you ever get the chance. -Brad Upton ('74) PS. I just opened again for some other heroes of mine, the legendary Smothers Brothers, at the Las Vegas Hilton. More than 23 years ago the Wilson family and many of you changed my life, being a foreign exchange student. It was tough but I learned a lot and still do because of you through the Sandstorm. I came thanks to the American Field Service and the idea was to make peace triumph from war because when you get to know people living with them wherever in the world you just cannot kill them! From then on I still believe in this idea and try to do my best to teach it to my pupils and children of course. That's why I need your Bomber's spirit once again: I'm looking for a course master for my elder daughter Deborah for next summer. I allow myself to ask you for help, since she would work for free and for the joy of learning something different about horses. She's a tough worker and already a good technician very appreciated from her former course masters. Below a letter I sent to some people of the appaloosa horse club (waiting for answers). Thank you for reading it anyway and if you think of something just tell me, I trust you. My daughter Deborah, 19 years old, is right now studying in "Normandie". This French region is well known for horses. It's her first year of the two needed for the BTS ACSE exam (superior technician certificate for analyse and leading of a farm estate system) more specifically for horses breeding, but concerning bovines too. These two years are just a step for her who would like to become horses zoo biology teacher in an agricultural school. She studied the speciality for four years already at the same time the school offered riding lessons (jumping) with a 9th level instructor. She her self reached the 7th level which is enough to become an instructor for the 6th first levels. During these years she got to work with two different course masters for a few months. One was breeding cone Mara ponies and the other one appaloosa horses. During this last course with Mrs. Renaudin (Chatembrun - 18170 Le Chatelet - France), she discovered more of western riding, educating foals and started to break two of them. She became found of it and would like to get to know more about it! It's partly why I'm writing to you today. While studying in "Normandie " she needs to find a course master for July and August 2004 in an English speaking country. The purposes are: speak English more fluently and learn specific vocabulary, get to know the way of farming and of life in other countries, learn as much as possible about the job, specificities and surroundings. During this two month Deborah will work for free but board and lodging will have to be offered. Regarding to her level in English: she studied it for 8 years at school, went many times in GB and USA for family travels, but never travelled by herself in foreign countries yet! If you are interested in teaching, next summer, more of the passion you share already with Deborah, please contact us as soon as possible (indeed we need to make arrangements with the school and for cheap transportation, early) Deborah Beaucour ************ -Monique Mangold Beaucour ('80) ******************************************** ******************************************** ******************************************** Funeral Notice scanned from the TCHerald by Shirley Collings Haskins ('66) >>Don Dawson ('55) ~ 1/21/37 - 10/13/03 http://FuneralNotices.tripod.com *************************************** *************************************** That's it for today. Well, before Jimbeaux accuses me of being lax again, here's an update from Hot Rod City aka Sin City aka Lost Wages. Lemme begin by saying that two weeks ago I headed for Bakersfield in the Shelleymobile with a group of hot rod hoodlums and donut delinquents for a Weekend known as the California Hotrod Reunion. It is also known as the Gathering of Geezers. Old time hot rodding all the way. We headed out around 3am... me with my little old time cooler hanging from the passenger window... It was wonderful... at least until the sun came up at which time the temperature in the Mojave dropped 30°... (I have to clue what causes that... my apologies to my physics and natural science teachers at various levels)... I didn't want to stop the group to take the AC off... couldn't figure out how to turn it off and so just stuffed a rag in it held by my navigator... We got to Bakersfield in good time and headed to the drag strip for the reunion... (we tried to have breakfast in Mojave but somebody moved the whole dang town left of the freeway)... we got great parking and had a wonderful time that day... Poor old Gene Winfield of custom car fame more than racing was next to me with his "restored" dragster... I hate to say this but that baby never looked that good back in the day... he was about to show it off to some guys and hit the switch... grind grind grind... dead battery... if he wasn't such a grouch on his good days I would have pulled up the Shelleymobile and hooked him up in good fun... but the look on his face told me he wasn't in the mood for fun... On Saturday the place was packed and what little organization there was was not working... One of the So-Cal guys from the "Beatniks" is a rather famous pinstriper, who has also gained fame for reproducing an exact duplicate of Norm Grabowski's Kookie car from 77 Sunset Strip. My boys got separated from me and by the time I made it thru the gate they were out of sight... I asked Von Franco (the pinstriper and Kookie builder) where my boys went... he said they were sent way out to the normal parking... Since Franco has always been fond of the Shelleymobile, he suggested we park with his club in the Vendors' row... get out and run like heck... Not being one to run from fun, I turned on my emergency tow light and drove in like I owned the place... calmly got out and left the mobile there for the rest of the day. It was a huge hit. Last weekend I had the pleasure of going to Huntington Beach to visit my kid. When I go I always get ahold of the worldly traveler Rich Maddy ('67) and meet him for breakfast on Saturday at the donut derelicts at Adams and Magnolia... I did and we did and had a great time. This month marked the premier issue of a new car mag called "Ol' Skool Rodz"... The lead story is the Viva Las Vegas car show held last April... Prominently displayed on the first page of the article is my Buddy Big Mike's car and... you guessed it... The Shelleymobile (pretow version)... so... for all you not willing to look for the mag... I'm sending the picture to the Sandstorm! Take care! -David Rivers ('65) ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Patty de la Bretonne ('65) Dear Linda Smith, Happy Happy Birthday to your Mom Alta. We didn't have children for the first 9 years we were married, but I feel like our first 3 sons were little poodles we loved and raised and treated as if they were our children. I still miss them, and our one and only German Shepherd we had for only 7 years. I agree, mutts are much more healthy than purebreds, and feel that I too would prefer a mixed breed to a purebred for that reason. We almost took in a darling 2 month old part German Shepherd stray a few weeks ago, but someone else wanted it. We just travel too much to make an honest commitment to a dog or a cat. I think 8 weeks at a stretch in a kennel is too much. I like that quote: "Next to the dog, the wastebasket is your best friend." B.C. We spent Monday in the Quarter and had lunch at Mesparo's across from the Jax brewery near Jackson Square. Tuesday we hit the road driving through Baton Rouge and crossing the river by ferry to St. Francisville. We passed up numerous plantations and the Port Hudson Battlefield and passed through Natchez, MS and finally arrived in Vicksburg, MS in the early afternoon. We stayed overnight at Anchuca Mansion, built in 1830, and enjoyed a tour and a plantation breakfast in the morning. Pitts stayed in the fancy canopy bed in the same room where Jefferson Davis stayed (and where the resident lady ghost has been seen). Don't think he had any visitors. We went on a great boat tour to see the city from the viewpoint of the Union gun boats. We mentioned that we lived in Washington State and the owner asked if we had ever heard of Richland! He explained that he had sold his previous boat to the Columbia River tour boat company that we rode on at our 40 year reunion... talk about a coincidence! We lost a few bucks at the local casinos and visited a museum and spent much of the afternoon driving through the Battlefield which was about 15 miles long and had over 1300 monuments. It was too late to do much else on Wednesday, so we headed back to my house in Bayou Gauche, LA. Thursday we spent much of the day at the Chalmette Battlefield (Battle of New Orleans) and did lunch at the Quarter View Restaurant. Friday I took them to the airport just in time for the big nationwide security scare... don't think they had any problems getting their flights though. I'm enclosing a few pictures of the trip and I'm sure Pitts and Quane may have some to contribute when they can. If anyone is interested in Anchuca Mansion or Vicksburg shoot me an email or type in the names on your computer and you can pull up plenty of information. Pictures: 1. I have no thumbnails left! Having said that, the best match-up (emotionally, historically) would have been the Cubs and the Sox., if for no other reason than to have the Series played in two of the all-too-few- remaining old parks. I am not prone to superstition but you had to wonder last night if the Babe wasn't behind that final hit! For those of you who are interested in odd baseball notes, the town I live in (Bisbee, AZ) has what is considered the oldest park in America where pro ball has been played. It is a lovely old thing, feels like sitting in Doubleday at Cooper's Town. This year there was an attempt to form a new AZ-Mexico league (don't laugh it had 4 teams). We got some great ball until the financial problems of the Nogales and Tecate teams caused it to fold. The good news is there looks to be yet another incarnation, this time AZ-New Mexico, already 6 teams scheduled. It's a good Halloween Costume for him and he'll be wearing it for the party. In fact "Sam", the dog, is now a full time resident in Richland (go Bombers) at my parents' home, Kathy Hudson Williamson ('53) & Jim Williamson ('54). Please feel free to "Trick or Drink" them for Halloween. I'm sure Sam will greet you first. He's quite the character and well known through the whole neighborhood. As for my other Beagles, several of them will be in California this weekend (with me & my wife) for a dog show near Oakland. I hear the weather is in the 80s. James might make some great passes, and he might get his share of steals, but I do not see him offensively controlling a ball game. I may eat these words by the end of the season. Do you really think he'll average over 30 points per game? He may be a playmaker, and quite an athlete, but I'll wager he won't go near Mike's offensive output. Ray's a hall of famer. Actually, last Saturday I celebrated in Richland with my best friend – we went to a seminar (a gift to me) and had dinner. Next Saturday I will have my Spokane celebration. But THIS weekend – well, grad school stops for no one’s birthday. I have a MAJOR paper due Wednesday, so there really could be no celebration yesterday. Two and three going into the game, CJ was going to need a really superior effort against a formidable foe to conclude the season at a respectable three and three. The opponent: Garrison of Walla Walla, a team which had thumped Pasco's Ochoa which in turn had thumped CJ a couple of weeks previously. A difficult assignment. An aside: I am from Walla Walla. Before I was shanghaied to Bombeville halfway through the eighth grade way back when, I was a proud (and ferocious) Pi-Hi 49er. Our death enemy was Garrison Junior High. It still is. Vicariously, it was important for me for CJ to look good. Well, CJ looked better than good. Behind great defensive play and two long TD scoring plays, CJ won the game 14-0. Yay!! Two TD's: one from Jamie Morris, and a long pass and run by number 24 -- Stephen Piippo. Stevie (for that is how his Grampa Toivo called him) provided the extra point kick -- he finally got his plant foot far enough forward! -- for the second extra points (the first was mucked up by a penalty). Oddly enough, at the junior high level, if you kick the extra point, it is worth two, and a run or pass is worth but one. Takes a bit of getting used to. (Simple explanation: the kids who can kick the ball accurately from Richland to Walla Walla are all playing select soccer for Three Rivers United or whatever other soccer team.) And the reward for all this? Well, the kids have to lug all the appurtenances of the game -- the team benches, the yard markers, whatnot -- to the equipment shed. Then they get to go get a shower and go home to do their homework. And the reward for the parents and friends? "Thursday there is a meeting to talk about hoops season." -- Jamie Morris. It's indoors anyway. And the reward for Bomber dad Steve Piippo ('70) -- who did not show up on the sidelines for the game (against arch-enemy Carmichael) in blustery and cold conditions the previous week (and who admitted later -- much later -- to having sat in his van (his toasty warm van) in the parking lot)? He got to work the chain crew (the guys who run the down-and-distance gear) along the sideline. He did a great job. -Richard Anderson ('60) ******************************************** ******************************************** >>From: Helen Cross Kirk ('62) I have just learned my friend from Japan and her 23 year old daughter are coming to the US October 30th! Well, Georgia Rushworth ('66) ..... did you ever have that dream about standing alone in nuthin' butcher pin feathers? How 'bout being the only person to send in an email to the sandstorm? ..... just when you "pop the question"? I have those things happen all the time! So anyway, to kinda answer your question (and I hope you know that you have given "DJ Jeff" ('65) a whole lotta ammo to use against me; but then, I'm corresponding with a girl): as most people who know me are aware I have always been a very shy and reserved kinda guy. Not the kinda guy who could just walk up to a gggg ... gggggi ... gggggir ... gggggirl (whew ... can hardly even get the word out) and just start talking to her. So my experience with gggggggirls is somewhat limited -- ask any of my 4 wives (it doesn't sound so bad at my current age) -- anyway, pictures of me are rather scarce since I am so reserved and shy; but, I think if you were to go to any of the R2 reunion sites you might be able to find a picture or 100 of me in one of those sites (that is if Frank Osgard Jr. ('63WB) hasn't erased them all and substituted his in place of the few that exist of me). So, anyway, I hope you are able to determine whether I have been able to maintain my boyish figger over the years. At least I still have my hair (as Terry Davis [Knox] '65) is fond of saying: "tho most of it is growing out of my ears now" (NOT TRUE for me; but it's funny when he says it)). She is scheduled to start chemo again on Monday morning this next week. We are hoping the chemo reduces the cancers in the lymph nodes so she can get off the pain meds for a while.
