Re: Rain
To: Jean Armstrong Reynolds ('64)
Sorry, Jean, the rain is back. We had one inch on
Thursday and we are expecting thunderstorms today and
tomorrow. To date we have gotten over seven inches in the
past eight or nine days. That's bad enough in the Ozarks,
but on the Delta, it's devastating. Even though walking
across the yard is like walking on sponge, I'm so very
thankful that we are not on a flood plain. My husband is
a little upset though; he has lost over half his tomato
plants, and everything else is turning yellow!

Jeez Loescher! I can't help you out; I barely remember
1957, let alone Sully Bayless and Max Case (or his
brother, Brief).
I do vaguely recall the infamous Bermuda Shorts vs.
the Col-Hi Administration caper in the Spring of that
year. Everyone -- well, nearly everyone -- OK, it was
a few malcontents with no other life -- rallied in favor
of allowing Bermuda shorts to be worn in April and May
and of course, in good taste. After much posturing the
administration gave in; and about a half-dozen of us poor
souls actually wore them. And it turned out to be the guys
with the truly ugly legs.
Was that a 'tempest in a tea-pot?, or 'much ado about
nothing?'. It made the phrase "be careful what you wish
for" take on a very real meaning!
And always remember: "The rain in Maine has plugged
the drain".
Well, its time for evening meds here at the home.
Good night you Kings of New England -

I have a quandary! Has anyone ever heard of a bird, in
this case a robin, trying to get into a house? We have one
that goes to the back slider, the front slider and the
actual front door. It flies up and constantly pecks at the
door! It also just sits at the door and pecks it. It isn't
afraid of me. If I opened the door it would come in! It
demands to be let in. I can tell by it's little birdie
body language. It starts as early as 6 am and will go
until 8 pm. It wakes me up almost every morning, I can
hear it clear from my bedroom. So what is the attraction?
I do have an African Grey parrot, but I don't think that
is the reason. Does anyone have any suggestions as to the
behavior of this robin?

Re: Robin
To: Georgia Rushworth ('66)
We have had a similar experience with an American
Robin, a male. He would fly at and then peck at our
windows repeatedly. He did this for several days in the
Spring. I called our local Backyard Bird shop. I was
told that it is "nesting season", that the robin saw his
reflection in the windows, thought that it was another
male bird, and was trying to fight it off in order to
protect his territory, nest and mate. To prevent this
activity, they recommended taping newspaper to the outside
of our windows, so he would not see his reflection. They
cautioned this might be 100% effective, because he might
remember where the "other bird" was and return and resume
his attacks. In our case it either worked or the nesting
season was over.
I knew your dad from working in 100 N Area or Exxon
Nuclear or both. Memory not what it used to be!! He was
a very nice man.

Re: Howard Amon Park
Yesterday, I was looking through some very old
pictures of picnics at the old park. Since I am an avid
scrapbooker, I journal for every page I make. My problem
is I can't really remember too many details about the
park. I remember "barbecue" places, and the little pool,
and the big pool... the icky grass and mud squishing up
between your toes after they had just watered. That brings
up my question: What kind of trees and flora were in the
park and how did they keep that big old park watered? And
I am open to any other memories about the park... of
course, I remember it as Riverside Park.
I also would like a little help in the name of the
tavern that was next to/connected to the old bowling alley
above the park. My dad used to take me to the bowling
alley, where I would sit for hours while he "tanked" up
next door. I was only 3 or 4 at the time, but I remember
the beautiful, highly polished (shiny to a child)
spectator seats that I entertained myself on by sliding
across. I remember how kind all the bowlers were to me,
even though they knew where my dad had gone.
Thanks for any help.

A Robin once befriended me in a similar way. He/She pecked
at my bedroom window awakening me several mornings in a
row. One morning, I went to my front door intending to go
around to the window and "talk" the Robin into desisting.
To my surprise, there sat the Robin on my front porch,
and, as with your Robin friend, he/she was ready to come
right in the front door.
I don't recall how the story ended, but since it was
Seattle, perhaps it was rain that intervened. I've heard
since that Robins sometimes fly against windows, even to
the point of injuring themselves. Could it be their
eyesight? Ever seen a Robin with glasses?

Re: Mid-Atlantic Bomber Lunches Launched
Saturday, May 1 was a great day for Bomberdom, as five
alumni, one "almost", three spouses, and one WIWAB (wish-
I-were-a-Bomber) gathered at Stafford, Virginia's new
Applebee's Restaurant for the first-ever Mid-Atlantic
Bomber lunch.
Those who traveled from far and wide to attend were:
Wanda Wittebort Shukay ('53), Ann Clatworthy Hogshead ('54)
and hubby Carl "Bud" Hogshead, Patty Crigler Cole ('59)
and husband Billy Cole, Earl Bennett III ('63), Pamela
Pyle Jewett-Bullock ('69) and hubby Charles Bullock, and
Steve Huntington (an "almost" '73 but moved to Spokane
before graduation).
Dropping by for a taste of the comradery was the Rev.
Toby Larson (a Spokane native and former Washington boys'
state tennis tournament participant, now a resident
Missioner for the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia in
Stafford, VA, who was kind enough to get behind the camera
to take a couple of our group photos).
Steve Huntington got the prize for the longest
commute to our lunch. A resident of Lynchburg, VA, he
traveled to the lunch from Wilmington, Delaware, following
a business commitment there. (Steve told me his wife
thinks him "addled" for such displays of Bomberville
loyalty. We assured him that the demonstration of Bomber
spirit was both appreciated and extraordinarily sane, and
promptly awarded him a T-shirt--thanks to thoughtful
cheerleader Wanda Wittebort Shukay.)
Others traveled (four via motorcycle) from little
Virginia "burgs" such as Reva, Fort Valley, and Lake
Ridge. It's interesting that some of the places we now
call home make Richland look like a big, sprawling
metropolis! Watching us swap stories and memories of "a
long time ago in a land far, far away," other restaurant
patrons surely couldn't have guessed that none of us had
met prior to the day's gathering.
In fact, we had such a good time that we had no
difficulty concluding the experience MUST be repeated...in
the fall. We're looking toward October, and sincerely
hoping others from the Mid-Atlantic Region will join us
for that next time. Watch the Sandstorm for details.
In the meantime, an online photo album of the
gathering can be enjoyed by all. To view, go to
http://www.ofoto.com/I.jsp?c=41fzgkld.834kiz3t&x=0&y=sw2by3
and click on the 'view' button. There is no need to
register/sign on as a member of Kodak's Ofoto service
(which is free, by the way) unless you desire to use the
service in the future to create, save, share and order
prints from your own photo albums. I use it when I want to
have the ability to share photos with groups of friends.

Re: Nesting Robins
The recent tales of Robins reminded me of our robins
that used to nest every year in our back yard. We had 9
tall poplar trees in our back yard and the same pair of
robins would show up every Spring and would gather up
twigs and grass and build a nest in a secure spot. We
never saw one blow down. My dad would put out some twigs
and pieces of bright string just to watch how those birds
would use them. One of the strings would be attached to a
nail in the ground. The robin would pick it up and fly
away....BLAM... he would crash to the ground. Not hurt, he
would get up and try again with the same results. Watching
that bird walking around and eyeballing that string from
different angles and pulling and tugging on it was great
entertainment as that robin just would not give up.
Finally after a couple of hours mom or I would go out and
snip the string and move it a bit so the robin would try
again with success. I don't know how many babies we saw
learn to fly over the years. One of my fondest memories of
Richland is that particular happy chirp as a robin greats
the morning sun.

Re: Robin
To: Georgia Rushworth ('66) any Bomber looking for answers
to do with birds!
What a dilemma with the Robin. The newspaper,
suggested by Dicksy Poe Creek ('50), to get rid of the
reflection is probably the best way to send the Robin
away. Putting outdoor shades, such as bamboo shades, on
the windows could do it also. You might also check the
area where the Robin comes to, to see if there are any
flowers or foods that can attract the Robin. Putting food,
such as, sunflower seeds out in your yard far away from
the house might also help.
I do not consider myself an Ornithologist but thanks
to Mr. Galati my teacher in sixth grade I have watched
birds through out the years. Being as I do feed the birds,
I have found the following magazine to help me with
answers about birds. Birds & Bloom is the magazine, which
can be ordered online. A subscription can bring six
magazines per year packed with questions and answers from
people all over the United States who have had experiences
with birds and flowers and more. Like the Sandstorm it is
a priority for me to read as soon as it arrives. The link is:

I now know the Sandstorm - after the write in about
the Robin - is also a good place to ask questions about
birds. **grin**

that they had already filled in the big pool before I was

Thank you, thank you. We lost our pet robin a few
weeks back and thought we'd never see it again! Please,
let it in and I'll come get it right away. We were playing
fetch with a night crawler here at the house, and I had
the screen door open... She flew out to get the worm and
must have gotten lost. Maybe it's because of that quandary
you mentioned. We have one at our place, too. Poor robin

We had the same experience last year with a robin. I
was told that this time of year the male robins (mating
season you know) are more aggressive and when they see
their reflection in a window they will do exactly what you
described. It is assumed they think their reflection is a
rival male and they will not give up beating their head
against a window (testosterone affect).
If you can put something over the outside of the
window so they can't see their reflection they will stop
or move to another window.
Good luck.

Re: Don't get SASSED, Bombers
Two slightly different versions of a new worm virus
called "Sasser" were discovered on Saturday, Alumni
Sandstorm readers. They exploit the local security
authority subsystem Service (LSASS) buffer-overflow
vulnerability identified by Microsoft last month.
Computers running Windows 2000 and XP are primary targets.
As with earlier worms, a patch to close this security hole
in Windows had been available for download 18 days before
Sasser was found.
The worm attacks systems connected to the internet
that were not updated with these software fixes. PCs
infected with Sasser will either crash and restart
repeatedly or start scanning the Web for other vulnerable
computers to infect. When infected, you'll see a "System
Shutdown" dialog box which cannot be dismissed count down
from 30 seconds until your system reboots.
Unlike previous Internet worms, Sasser enters and
infects vulnerable PCs without any action on the part of
the user, allowing it to spread quickly. This time you
don't have to open email attachments to be infected.
Simply connecting to the Internet using an unprotected PC
is enough. The worm can infect unprotected computers less
than 10 minutes after they are connected. Because the
virus seeks out infectable computers automatically and
does not use email to spread, experts said personal home
machines may be most vulnerable.
A link on the Microsoft's home page instructs users to
make sure that they have enabled their protective Internet
connection firewall in Windows XP, updated Windows to
close the security loophole that the worm exploits and
then to remove the worm from their hard drives.
http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/sasser.asp
Keeping virus detection programs updated with the latest
signature file to detect the latest viruses and setting
up Windows to auto download and install new "critical"
patches will keep systems safer from the newest worms.
While the Sasser worm does not seriously damage infected
computers, hackers could try to spin off more malicious
variants in the coming days. For those without virus
protection software, I've linked Trend Micro's free online
virus scanning and cleaning site below:

bird houses (Chickadee house on our fence and three Robin

The Rec Hall was the whole building consisting of the
Tavern, Bowling Lanes, Lunch Counter. Pinball machines and

Room was later used for Hi-Spot dances.
I believe the Big Pool in Riverside Park was filled in

Do I remember the Mart? I spend many an hour as a

to the Mart it had the Evergreen Room (lounge), cafeteria
(the entire building originally was a cafeteria), Economy
drug store (which later became a part of the Payless chain
and moved), and jewelry store (Nihart's). I really missed
it as we had to find another "hangout." Muscles spent a
lot of time in there also.
Re: The big pool
Camp Hanford was here then and wanted to maintain the

said it did not meet certain standards so they filled it

Re: The Day Care Center
It was located on Geothals-now-Jadwin and Lee Blvd. in
a Quonset hut. A lot of women who worked in the 700 Area
(between Knight Street and Lee Boulevard - east and west)
and Geothals-now-Jadwin and Stevens Dr. - north and south)
used the day care. That location later had a filling
station (gas) and after that became what is now US Bank.

I am very involved here in the Tri-Cities with
welcoming home our military men and women. Our group
"American Citizens Encouraging Support" (ACES) was started
during the Gulf War and we welcomed over 300 at that time.
So far we have welcomed 120 and know we have missed some
as we did not know they were coming in. We have a red
carpet, flags from all branches including POW/MIA, music
and gifts for each one. We shed tears of joy with each
homecoming as most of the Heroes returning share those
tears with us. I can't explain the pride we feel for each
one. They receive hugs and hand shakes from each and every
one of us. Most of us feel they are a part of us even if
we have never met until that moment. We have members
that come from Hermiston and Milton-Freewater. We can go
anywhere to great them, the Pasco Airport, and those that
come in other ways we do at their homes, Hubbies Pizza,
Red Robin, Granny's, parks, etc. We also sent care
packages, send to wounded, work with the 303rd Nat'l Guard
that is in Iraq at this time. We had a large send off for
them at the Pasco Armory and now help their families here
when they need help through AmVets Shoulder to Shoulder
program. As you can see this requires a lot of time and
love for those giving so much for us, but it is worth
every minute.
Now I will get down to business. We have received many
requests from military units and families wanting someone
in the Seattle area to have homecomings for the ones
coming home in that area. Any Bombers that live over there
can be of help to me by letting me know of anyone that
is interested in starting up a group of this type. The
founder of our group, Carol Boe, and I will be happy to
work with anyone that in interested in giving some time.
One rule we have is that we never include politics as
no matter for or against the war we must support our
troops and our supports come from our hearts 100%.
Thank you for reading my "book".

Re: Spam 'n' Worms

That smacks a bit of "Big Brother"! Seriously, when
you register your OS online with Microsoft, they have
a block to check if you want to be informed of future
updates, or at least they used to. Many who did check the
block would change the setting the first time that they
logged on and ended up in the maze of Microsoft home! A
solution is to periodically log on to Microsoft home and
check for updates - you can do it on a slow evening when
there isn't much mail or other surfing to do. I received
a warning from my ISP with the link to the update and I
assume that many more ISPs did the same.
To: Pam Ehinger Nassen ('67)
There are many spam blockers available but most are
too drastic in their filters - fine if you aren't hoping
to hear from a long lost classmate or a new friend -
anyone whose address isn't passed by your spam filter.
SBC YAHOO, my ISP uses a different tack - being a internet
mail provider, they trap filtered email to a "Bulk"
folder. You can periodically review the source and title
of the messages held without actually opening the message,
even with a couple of hundred of messages in my bulk mail,
I am able to scan, mark and delete the trash without
loosing any desired messages and not opening any that
might be infective! There should be similar spam blockers
available for computer based email (Outlook Express is a
computer based email system), however the file has to be
downloaded to your PC from the web which is all that it
takes for newer viruses.

To: John Browne, Jr. ('61)
I understand how you may have wondered that, John but
no. The Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) available in
Windows XP doesn't behave like you'd just unplugged your
DSL cable or modem line from the Internet.
ICF is a "stateful" software firewall. A stateful
firewall is one that monitors all aspects of the
communications that cross its path and inspects the source
and destination address of each message that it handles.
ICF prevents unsolicited network traffic from entering by
keeping a table of all communications that have originated
from the local computer. All inbound traffic from the
Internet is compared against the entries in the table.
Inbound Internet traffic is only allowed to pass when
there is a matching entry in the table that shows that the
communication exchange began from within the local box.
All this mumbo-jumbo means is that you can go to the
Windows Update site and download patches even with ICF
turned on. Open "Network Connections", right-click your
Network Connection, click 'Properties" and then the
"Advanced" tab and check the checkbox to turn on ICF in
Windows XP.
Re: "Thanks for the alert" from Lynn Noble Paden ('72)
And Lynn, Sony won't notify you of available Windows
patches but it sounds like you already have Windows set to
"auto-download" any new critical updates that become
available. Good for you! Because you kept on top of this
you had already plugged the security hole (buffer overrun)
in lsass.exe, and thus you weren't vulnerable to the
Sasser worm.
If you'd like to take this protection a step further
or if you have a legacy operating system like Windows 98
Bombers, go to http://www.windowsupdate.com/, scan for
available updates and under "Recommended Updates" you'll
find some software to install that will notify you of any
new critical updates that become available. It's called
"Windows Critical Update Notification".

Two Things: AntiVirus Programs and Updates
1. Antivirus Programs:
I hope everyone has some kind of antivirus program running
on their computer at all times. If not, the world can only
cry for you when you find out you have been invaded ... I
am a civil savant working for Uncle Sammy and am aware
that the US of N uses Norton Antivirus.
Ask yourself - "How many times have I heard about military
computers getting trashed by some worm or virus?" ... the
answer would be almost none. Actually very few. It does
happen and when it does Norton springs into action. I am
not endorsing Norton ... just saying that Norton Antivirus
is one of the best. Once you have it loaded you can
update the virus definition files at your leisure ... and
at your peril or you can set up Norton Antivirus to check
periodically for updates.
When the Norton Antivirus program is up an running on your
computer it should show the Norton Antivirus protection
badge in your system tray. Indicating it is active. You
can right CLICK on the badge, "OPEN NORTON ANTIVIRUS"
and click on "LiveUpdate...". At that point Norton will
connect (if you are on the internet) to its update site
and copy the latest virus definition files to your
computer. Norton will also up date your Norton software if
it needs to do so.
2. Microsoft Updates:
If you have your computer set up to NOT check for software
updates ... and would like to do them manually on your own
time. Open your browser, assuming you are using Microsoft
Internet Explorer ... any version ... however you should
be on Version 6.0.xxxx.xxxx .... You can check the version
of Internet Explorer by clicking on "HELP" and then click
on "ABOUT INTERNET EXPLORER" ... a small window will be
displayed with the version.
To check for updates; Click on "TOOLS", select "Windows
Update". You will be linked to the Microsoft Windows
Update site. Click on the little green button with the
white arrow - "Scan for updates". Microsoft will scan your
computer to see what updates you do not have. They will
present you with a list of "CRITICAL", "Recommended" and
"Update" sort of like ... "If you want these" updates.
I would recommend that you select all "CRITICAL" and
"Recommended" updates. The "If you want these" depends
upon software you may or may not have loaded on your
computer. If an update is a very large file, 1 or 2 mega-
bytes or larger and you are still on a modem ... select
one at a time and update your computer over a day or two.
If you are worried about Microsoft getting into your
"STUFF", your "DATA" or your "LIFE", I think there is
little cause for concern. I have been in the UNIX/DOS/

Re: Patches and Worms and Updates
To: Jay Siegel ('61)
Re: Spam 'n Worms
Hi Jay,
That "block to check" is a checkbox Microsoft provides
to new users of Windows to choose to get email announcing
service packs that contain software enhancements, not
Windows critical updates. Checking the box when you
register Windows really doesn't mean you are registering
to receive Windows patches. Those critical patches are
made available constantly on the Windows Update site:
http://www.windowsupdate.com. When installing a new
version of Internet Explorer, checking a checkbox resets
your browser's home page to http://www.microsoft.com and
since that's your IE home page, you'll visit it every time
you open your browser. On that page Microsoft announces
new updates available for Windows and new virus threats.
But of course, you can always change your home page back
to whatever URL you wish. I must say you gave very,
very good advice, Jay, when you suggested that Bombers
"periodically log on to Microsoft home and check for
updates".
To: Helen Cross Kirk ('62)
Re: The patch
You may have been the victim of some kind of email
hoax, Helen. Receiving "an email from my server (or some
department of it) to unload a patch" just sounds fishy.
Earlier worm viruses used these types of emails to
propagate themselves when people opened attachments
in them thinking they came from their ISPs. Logically,
uninstalling Windows patches is counter productive. You
make your computer vulnerable again. Given the fact that
when you tried to go to the web site mentioned in the
email and your virus program blocked it, well that really
sounds like something weird was going on. I'm convinced
that you won't be receiving an answer from the email
address you sent your inquiry about this to. But it
sounds like you're doing the right thing now, Helen, by
not responding to messages or following instructions in
emails that you don't recognize the originator's email
address.

I could not and can not swim because of ear problems
I have had my entire life so other than seeing my sister
swim at the big pool and taking my children to the George
Prout swimming pool I really can not remember how the
Prout pool was funded. (I wasn't interested I guess.)
George Prout was the General Manager over the entire
Hanford Project when the General Electric Company was
here. Since we had only one contractor at that time he was
the head honcho over the entire Hanford Project. He may
have been the one who spearheaded having the pool built
and thus the pool was named for him. That is just a guess
on my part.

It probably wasn't the firewall that presented the
problem, but the sasser itself, since it was tough to get
ANYwhere long enough before the system began rebooting...
of course, with the virus already onboard, IT could be
'the source' of some of the outbound messages, couldn't
it? So the firewall might just assume any responses were
valid... hmmm

Greetings to each and all, and special Mother's Day wishes
to all you moms and grandmoms.
My little Minnie Winnie is ready to find a new home!
It's a nice little 21 ft with 6 seat belts and sleeps 4.
Fully contained, it would be great for a small family
taking short trips. My kids decided it wouldn't do for me
to take off for a couple of months at a time and traveling
long distances. It has 107,000+ miles on it.
Bought an "upgrade" recently. It's a Jambouree Raley
and is bigger than I thought I wanted (27 ft), has a full
bedroom, which I will probably appreciate as I trek around
the USA seeing the sights of this wonderful country of
ours, and visiting relatives and friends. Surely gas
prices won't stay up FOREVER, will they?!!?? I guess the
Alaskan Bombers are lovin' this---the Dividend Fund is
dependant on the price of oil per barrel. So while they
are being gouged at the gas pumps, just like the rest of
us, at least they will be compensated in October.
Have a good and safe Memorial Day weekend!

Dear Bomber alums,
I'm responding to Ray Loescher's ('57) request to
submit an entry in the Alumni Sandstorm... do you remember
our nickname for Ray: "Gabby Hayes". "Gabby" suggested
frequency of motor mouth activity!!
I'm delighted to share my journey with Bomber alums...
after completing 39 years of service as a teacher/pastor
in higher education, I'm happily semi-retired, teaching
courses on "Exploring Spirituality in Popular Film" and
"Spirituality and the Visual Arts: Photography, Sculpture
and Film." I enjoy non-traditional students, 35-75 years
of age... I'm serving on advisory boards for Benedictine
and Carmelite sisters, adjunct professor at a theological
seminary, and resource consultant to congregations
exploring how to bring the visual arts into worship
and architectural settings... I'm very eclectic in my
spirituality, fusing native American practices, reverence
for natural landscapes, Quaker/Buddhist/Catholic
meditation practices, interfaith dialogues with
Christians, Jews, and Muslims... I remember influential
friends and teachers from Richland over the span of many
years... especially, my favorite teachers and ministers
(at CUP/Westside UP)... I'm grateful for growing up with
adults who were lifelong learners in Richland... I've
always found strength and comfort from facing adversities
by "learning something new." That's the secret of growing
at any stage of our journeys... I've also had occasion to
reconnect with Ora Diettrich ('57), Diane Zuelow ('57),
Dorothy Warren ('57), Dick and Dorothy Hill, Cecil ('53)
and Betty ('51) and John Bell, Shirley ('56) & Gloria ('61) Davis,
Don McKenzie ('56) and his sister Carol ('63)... Walker
Douglas ('57), Phil Hefner ('57) and Phil Barr('57), Jim
Clementson. ('57). Please know many of above have married
names... I'm recalling their high school names.
Also had the pleasure of reuniting with David Warren's
brothers and sister at his inauguration as president
of Ohio Wesleyan U./Delaware, OH, several years ago...
David's serving the association for independent colleges
and universities now days.
It's with fond memories I'm connecting to the rowdy
Richland Bombers... "On to State" was our rallying cry
every year!! My friendship remains with so many of you in
so many places, and I'd enjoy hearing from those who
remember our friendship at Col-Hi.

I stopped in Richland a few days ago passing through.
Visited Phil Collins ('67) and we took a little trip to
Dawald Gym. Snapped this photo of John Meyers ('58RIP)
and the excellent company surrounding him. Also visited
Gary Nelson ('67) that evening. Always a good day to be
with these long time friends. Although years go by, we
just pick up the conversation where we left off last time.
That is how it is with friends.

I did not receive my Sandstorm yesterday or today.
Is it me or you?? I remember that sometimes they float

As I remember it the pool was named after George Prout
(a child about 10 years old) who drowned swimming in the
Columbia river about 1947. I didn't know George but knew
a brother I think. Surely the city should have some more
accurate information than my memory.

Re: Gabby?
To: Max Case ('57)
Max,
You recently wrote to the Sandstorm saying: "do you
remember our nickname for Ray: "Gabby Hayes". "Gabby"
suggested frequency of motor mouth activity."
I'd like to set the record straight. I came by the title
"Gabby" from Naomi Buescher, the wonderful geometry and
trigonometry teacher of our era. You see, I happened to be
a stutterer at that time and it just so happened that the
smartest kid in Washington sat right behind me in Mrs.
Buescher's class. Ironically, my friend was also a
stutterer. Think about it. How long does it take two
stutterers to come to a conclusion on anything? It takes
a long time!
Since I had to turn around to "talk" to my buddy, it was
always me that was in trouble. Somehow Mrs. Buescher knew
he didn't need to ask anything of me! There's another
twist. Turns out I had a hearing loss too. Imagine how
frustrating it must have been for my friend. He thinks I
finally have the answer only to have me say "huh?"
I became "Gabby" by Mrs. Buescher. The nickname "Gabby
Hayes" was bestowed by others later on. I suppose it's
true. When I finally overcame stuttering, I probably did
talk a lot!

Hi Max,
Just thought you might be interested in this little
piece of news. My daughter, Amy Andrews, who lives in
Hillsborough, CA, just recently joined the Burlingame
First Presbyterian Church (Burlingame and Hillsborough are
communities there next to the bigger San Mateo) and a few
years ago, when she thought she might get married in that
church, we went for a visit and guess who was working
there (the ministerial capacity, I cannot recall): none
other than Liz and Dick Cole from West Side UP Church in
Richland who were involved in the youth groups and I think
Assist. Minister, in the 1950s!! I had seen from a program
their names, and thought, surely there is not another
couple of that name involved in the Pres. Church, so I
asked when we arrived for the visit if there was a blonde
lady named Liz Cole and her husband, Dick working there.
Well, we had a good laugh when we met and it turned out
that she was not blonde any more!! She dragged us in an
office to greet "Richard" who was surprised that someone
from the atomic burg had arrived at his desk!! They were
most gracious and gave us a first-class tour. Another
"small world" event which we enjoyed.
If you are interested in writing to them, I can get
the address or I'm certain that you could find it on the
internet. Continued success in your art studies/teaching.
As a FA major, that pleases me to hear that the history
and at the least "attention" of the significance of art
in culture (in your case religion) is presented to an
audience outside of the universities.

Re: Sacramento Bomber Lunch / JCPenny Connection
All Bomber Lunches website
JC Penney/Bomber connection. A little background first.
I worked for and retired from JC Penney. Worked in the
office at the Distribution(furniture) Center in Hayward,
CA. In 1986 the company began to consolidated and close some
centers. Hayward warehouse was transferred to North
Highlands (Sacramento) CA. Five of us transferred and
moved from the Bay Area. In 1994 the company once again
consolidated and the North Highlands Distribution Center
was closed and Chino in Southern CA took over the entire
operation for Western states. I could have gone "south"
but choose not to after the very stressful ordeal of going
through the closing and disposal of employees not once but
twice. Had enough time with them to receive retirement
when old enough. Got another job with Montgomery Ward
doing the same kind of work. Now Wards is gone also. Do
you see a pattern here for me???? So I retired in 1996.
At the Sacramento lunch on Monday was sitting next to
Jim McKeown ('53). Someone asked him if he was going to
Club 40 in September and he said no as he had a JC Penney
retirement affair he had to attend that same weekend. Told
him I had retired from JCP and he said he had also and had
been the District Manager here in Sacramento from 1986 to
1994. Well, I about fell off the chair. He was "THE MAN"
so to speak. The manager at the warehouse... my boss had
to answer to Jim as he was his boss and indirectly mine
also. You know the chain of command! We knew the same
people of course.
Just goes to show what a small but spread-out Bomber
world it is. Never know who, when or where one is going
to show up.
Could not wait to contact some of my old JCP friends
to tell them "Guess What?" I still can't believe it.
Had another outstanding group of 20 for lunch. Took a
couple of head counts but Harold Kenitzer ('54) finally got
it right. Way to go Harold! Missed some who had been
before... you'll come back... and some new faces... you'll
come back also. Would love to see the numbers go up next
time. We know you are out there! My brother Jim ('52) for
instance!

Re: Bunnies
Often times I have had critter problems of one kind
or another--SKUNKS, being the worst--under the house, the
house being an old adobe built in the 1920s (20" thick
walls) and not so much of a crawl space underneath. The
dogs caused the skunk to blast off under the house on a
Sunday morning. My husband pulled back a corner of the
carpet and drilled a hole in the floor and poured moth
balls and ammonia down there and we promptly loaded up the
kids and took off for Santa Fe and went to church with
my in-laws. Everyone around us was sniff-sniff-sniffing.
There was no sign of skunks when we got back. It took a
long time for our house AND clothes to air out. Just to
make SURE they were gone, we backed the car up to the
house where we could get a pipe under it, ran the pipe
from the car to under the house, poured a little oil into
the carburetor, turned the car on and smoke billowed away
under the house. Critters don't like that either. ('Course,
neither did we. I think we went camping for a day.) THAT
was an ordeal!
Mothballs, ammonia, pinesol etc., are good deterrents
for the critters and insects. They say ants won't cross a
trail of pinesol. The smell?- depends on you. That depends
on where you have to put these things to keep the bugs and
critters away. It is also a way of the keeping them away
as opposed to the poisoning method, etc.
I use mothballs in some of my flower beds where my big
dog likes to lay. It keeps him out. Mothballs don't seem
to bother the plants. If you have enough air around you
mothball scent isn't all that bad.
I have also heard, but haven't tried, that planting
daffodils around the area you want to protect is suppose
to keep gophers out!!?? Don't know how that works.

They don't like pepper. Sprinkle black pepper over and
around vegetable and flower beds. They are repelled by the
scent, after it rains be sure and do it again. OR grow a
patch of clovers and wild flowers in a corner of your yard
to give the Bunnies their own 'salad'. Spray the patch
with a mixture of one cup Molasses, one tablespoon Salt
and one gallon water. But do know that Bunnies do eat
crabgrass, dandelions, knotweed and rag weed. They also
eat poison ivy.

Re: Rabbits...Skunks & Other Things...here in Colfax!
Your 'stuck' with all of these critters until you've
removed their food or water source... try all of the store
bought or home remedies and you'll be 'flushing' it down
the ol' tube... Our MAJOR problem are the white tail deer
that inhabit Whitman County. We've counted as many as 17
in the yard at one time. (Laying down and/or grazing) Our
back deck has 11 steps from the yard to the deck. Several
winters ago we had 6 deer on it tearing at my bird feeder.
The Countess, my wife Janis, Kennewick Lion from the Class
of 1965, has tried most everything... including bear 'dung'
from WSU. One of our neighbors, a local area lawyer,
'marked' his yard... in the same fashion a coyote would
mark his living area (;-)
I did bring up the idea of marking all of the deer
with red paint balls... with the local area 'fish & game'
representative... also a neighbor... rushing out to put
the animals 'down'... but figured I would be the prime
suspect... and at my age much too old to spend time behind
bars.
We fenced our hedge with chicken wire several years
ago... and plant nothing but marigolds...

P.S. I don't recall any of these problems in Richland...
we lived on Hains next to the river. I do recall
Mrs. Floyd Gates running over (one) rattle snake,
on the sidewalk, 20 or 30 times (;-)

Thank you for the Bunnies in the Flower Bed advice. I
will try the mothball treatment first! It would scare me
away! Predator pee ..I will check it out. I have used
bobcat urine just because I happen to have one.
To: Ladies
Are there any ladies out there who live in/near the
Tri-Cities who ride motorcycles? Our local Ladies of
Harley (LOH) club have renamed ourselves and are now
Hooters on Scooters (HOS). We go riding as often as
possible! We do day trips plus overnighters. You don't
have to own a Harley to ride with us. E-mail me if you are
interested.
Bombers will always rule~~

Re: Nacey Kent Jr. USAF
Re: Spooky aka Puff (AC47)
To: The United States Air Force RHS Bomber Veterans
I thought you Air Force Vets would like to know this.
Sergeant Nacey Kent Jr. was awarded the Air Force
Cross for heroism during an attack on Pleiku on May 5, 1968.
One of only twenty non-commissioned officers awarded
the Cross in the history of the Air Force. Nacey is the
father-in-law of my sister’s (Sheila Maddy Kelly ('66))
daughter, Carrie Kent (my niece), married to Nacey’s son,
Aaron. I must report to you and your fellow comrades that
Nacey lost his life on May 1, 2004. He had been having a
lot of trouble with severe headaches for quite some time.
Last year while visiting family, Nacey told me when the
plane (AC 47) was hit by a SAM missile on their attack
dive the plane flew straight into the ground. Surprised he
was alive, he got out of the plane and realizing others
were not, he went back into the aircraft on three
different occasions saving the lives of several of his
fellow airmen while the craft burned. He had a severe
cut on his head, a broken leg and an injured back from
something that had hit him in the back. He thought it was
an ammo can. Nacey suffered severe headache pain for the
years to come. He suffered a great deal with PTSD. Living
in the Washington state woods near Eatonville, WA, he
walked out to an outbuilding, laid down and died. I will
spare you the details. My nephew, Aaron, called by his
mother, ran down the road and started CPR. It was too
late.
This is very devastating to the family and I regret
reporting to you, particularly the Air Force Vietnam Vets,
that you have lost another. Nacey was a good man with a
kind and gentle soul who suffered immeasurably within. My
sincere condolence to you all.
