Thanks Maren for including the picture of my dad with my entry
yesterday, but I can't believe that a professional photographer
selected that one from among those he took. Dad's almost obscured
by one of the union people, but I made the mistake of showing them
a certificate he received from the War Department in 1945 stating
to the effect that he'd worked on the bomb that stopped the war.
Oops, politically incorrect. Heh heh.
I'm not sure what was going on with the photog anyway. He's a nice
kid, but he hung around after the union people left and just kind
of smiled pleasantly, didn't ask questions, didn't take any more
pictures, we just kind of stood there and looked at each other.
Are Tri-City Herald photographers paid by the hour? I noticed him
looking at the pictures of four of my unmistakably Victorian great
grandparents which are hanging on the wall (one of which is also
in the picture of my dad). To fill the silence, I told him that
one family immigrated from Canada in wagons and took a homestead
in Montana. He then asked if that was in about the '50s! I did a
double take and he looked perfectly serious! I said, Noooo, late
"1800s, early 1900s." He's either incredibly ignorant or he was
puttin' me on. If it was the latter, he's good, if it was the
former, God help the media.

How many of you out there have entered a contest just for fun and
actually won something? At the grocery store this morning they were
having a sale on Hershey candy bars. I picked some up and saw there
was a contest for Brad Paisley things. I opened the first one later
and entered the number inside the wrapper. It was my lucky day - I
had a winning 2nd place wrapper good for 6 free months of Brad
Paisley's fan club. The only other one I recall winning was in the
late '80s while I was living in Montana. The magazine I was reading
had a trivia contest (old-time TV as I recall), one answered 5
questions and everyone who got the most right was put into a
drawing for $25.00. Well, I aced the quiz and won the "dough".

COMMENTS: I am not an Alumni, but am the baseball coach for a
men's baseball team, called the Savannah Bombers, named after
Jimmy Stewart's B-24 Bombers. He flew 20 missions in a B-24
during World War II. The 8th Air Force Museum is here in Savannah,
so we honor the tradition.

Re: Candy Bars
I wrote about my exploits with the candy wrapper yesterday. I went
ahead and opened the other 3 so I could see if it was just a fluke
(I was thinking the odds were stacked against me for having any
other winners). Of the 4--3 had a second place prize and the 4th
had a third place prize. The rules say so many of each prize can be
won by one household but only one e-mail address per redemption.
I tried to give one of the 2nd place ones away but since I had
already redeemed it under my e-mail address it wouldn't allow that.
The 3rd place prize was a down-load of one of Brad Paisley's songs
just for the computer. That same size Hershey bar cost me $.05 when
growing up but yesterday they were 4/$3.00. Hopefully now my luck
will change for the better.

David Rivers'(65)writes about his delight at coming to his class
reunions and saying that no matter what, they are fun and it is
nice to reconnect with friends from days past. said that some had
stayed away for various reasons and he had convinced some of them
to come and they were glad they did. well, I can relate to that----
I stayed away from mine, too(fatter than I was in high school and
embarrassed and ashamed of it and not wanting to face the stares of
"look what happened to her", along with other reasons for staying
away, that are too trivial and don't make much sense at this age,
to go into)---finally gave in and went to the 35th and the 40th and
had a good time at both! will admit I had more fun at the 40th than
I did at the 35th, but that is only because more of the group I
knew/hung around with, were at the 40th. *grin* next on the agenda
is to make it to a Club 40 gathering.
someone had written in about "old age" and aches and pains, and
using a handicapped plaque----NEVER in my wildest dreams did I ever
think I would be THAT old, but this blasted body has let me know
that the abuse I did to it as a kid(jumping out of trees, off the
roof, falling down on skates, etc.)has come back to "bite me in the
butt", BIG time!!!!! I have arthritis in my right hip, right knee,
and also have degenerative disc disease in my lower spine, so I
walk with a cane or use a walking stick, and have a handicap plaque
that I use when my hip and back are really hurting. I do try to
leave the space for those that are worse off than me, but there are
times, when I take full advantage of that blue plastic placard and
hang it from my rearview mirror! "old age ain't for sissies"(as
stated by Bette Davis on the "Tonight Show")---truer words were
NEVER spoken!!!! *grin* have found you have to be tough go get
through what is known as "the golden years". *grin* but, the
alternative is worse, so will enjoy what I can do, and quit
worrying about what I can't. *grin*
Linda Reining(Boomber Bomber class of 64).......just got home from
spending two weeks on the Central Coast of CA----Nipomo, Pismo,
Morro Bay----had a blast!!!!!!! weather was just the way I like
it----never hotter than 70 and most of the time it was 67!!!!!!!
clam chowder, fish and chips and salt water taffy were
delicious!!!!!!! *grin* now, back to reality in Bakersfield, CA,
where triple digits have arrived and we will "see" 104 on the 4th
and they say we will "hit" 108 on Thursday!!!!!!! am more than
ready to head back to the coast!!!!!!! *grin*

I am about to give up, because I can't seem to get any info. One

The old school is about ready to go down. The trees have been cut,
the insides gutted out, and it's about ready for the wrecking ball.
A number of people have ran into a unannounced sale of the items
inside and came away with chairs, desks, doors, scoreboards, and
various items from the school's history. Some of the people who
may have wanted something will probably have to find it on eBay.
Re: Bomber mom.

just want to mention it. Delores Dauenhauer-Morman. Delores and her

Re: Just right weather
When I see numbers like 103° and 107° in good old Bomberland, it
makes me glad I live over here. We sat out on the deck last night
watching another fabulous sunset over the San Juan Islands,
drinking a glass of Washington wine, and watching the boats go by.
It was 71° at 9:30 PM, down from 83° and just perfect. In fact, we
have been doing that for the past week or so and looks like it will
go well into next week when they are predicting in the 90s for
Seattle by mid-week. 90° in Seattle probably relates to 110° to
112° in the Tri-Cities, which it was in Tucson on the 4th and 119°
in Palm Springs the same day.
Whilst 103° - 107° is just too hot for me now, thus I live over
here in the more temperate zones, I remember those summer mornings
in Richland when I was growing up. It would be 70° or so at 6:00 AM
on my paper route and racked up to 100° by early afternoon and then
up from there around 5:00 PM and it never bothered me. We rode our
horses, hunted, rode our bikes up to the swimming pool and did all
kinds of stuff, never really understanding how hot it was. Sure,
from time to time we would just lay out in the shade of the big
Lombardi Poplars my Dad planted as a wind break, but the heat
really did not seem to stop us much.
Now it would melt me, butter ball that I am. Just the same, I know
Eastern Washington is very therapeutic for a lot of people and that
is where they should live... drowning in sweat. Go for it you
Richland-living Bombers. Me, I am going out and drown a few herring
and maybe even catch a salmon or two. I guess I should ask Pappy,
Fish and Game guy that he is, if the number of salmon you catch is
directly correlated to the number of beers you consume or is that
just a heat thing? If so, I had better get a bigger boat both for
salmon and beer.
On a more serious note, did you know that in Washington, DUI laws
apply to driving cars AND boats? Maybe just a two-pack for eight
guys is smarter now that I think about it.

and so are the women.

Re: Rural Setting
I have heard parts of the Lacey-Olympia area are rural but last
week took the cake. It was about 6:30 on Saturday morning when I
was returning from my weekly grocery shopping trek. I saw a car
a block or two ahead stopped in the left lane. He had no signal
on and I thought there's nothing there to be turning into. As I
approached his car I saw why he was stopped--there was a doe with
two fawns standing beside the street in a housing area. The area
is only 5 blocks or so from my complex and the manager had told me
when these apartments were built about 20 years ago it was nothing
but woods. There are still a lot of fir and pine trees across the
street so I don't doubt it. I'll definitely be vigilant when I go
shopping; I like to go early and beat the crowds of shoppers. I
have even been through that area in total darkness and never seen
any deer other than a dead one a year ago beside the same street.

the east side but bad enough

To All Bombers,
When I read the idea about putting together a book containing the
stories related in the Alumni Sandstorm I thought to my self what
an excellent idea. I remembered the saying the faintest ink is
better than the brightest memory or something like that (should
have written that down). Personal histories are treasures worth
more than gold. Children really like to know what they can about
their parents. It is a connection that will never fade and will
only grow stronger with each re-reading of that recorded history.
Loved ones who pass through the veil, leaving family behind,
will remember with great clarity what is dear to their heart.
Remembrances should be recorded for those who we will leave behind
and to personalize family that preceded us. Newspapers are a great
source of family stories however, Richland is the only community
I know of that had a company newspaper printing events of its
residents. Another unique aspect of being a Bomber.

they mourn the loss of their mother, Vada! The Eckert and

your mom and always admired her ability to cope with such a
large family. My mom just had four Keeney kids and we were

There was some discussion about Jack Moorman ('54) and his
declining health. I sent a message to Jack's wife, Kathy, to ask
about his health problems. She has given me permission to share
this with his friends.
------------
(from Kathy)
Things have been rather hectic around here for the
past few months. The doctors Tell us Jack isn't going
to make it, but of course they don't know how long
it will be. Because of the congestive heart failure
they say he could drop over anytime. Eleven years
ago he had a quadruple by pass and an aorta valve
replacement and now the valve is not working right
and because of all his other medical problems they
can't replace the valve again. They tell us he
wouldn't make it through the surgery. Hospice has
been coming out here since the end of March. They
told him to do whatever he wants to as long as he
doesn't over do it. He as a hard time knowing when
he is overdoing it. Ha!! He has always been a
workaholic so he still gets on the riding lawnmower
and mows a little and plays with his old cars. He
has a '63 Ford Galaxy 500 and '64 Ford Galaxy 500.
The '64 is a show car, but the '63 is a hot rod. That
probably sounds like the Jack you remember. Ha!! He
is on oxygen 24/7 now, so he has a long tube on his
big bottle in the garage so he can move around the
cars better. He has a couple of small bottles he
uses in the house and when we go somewhere he can
carry in his hand or hang on his shoulder. We have
a machine that makes the oxygen to fill the little
ones. He has a good day now and then and then he has
bad ones. That's what the doctor says will happen
until the end. I know I don't have to tell you the
stress I'm under, not knowing what I will find each
morning. He can't drive anymore so that doesn't set
too well with him either. You probably know how he
likes cars. We will appreciate all those Bomber
Prayers. Kathy Moorman

Greetings from the hot midwest, where surprisingly we are getting
a cool breeze in the house at the moment, though it's above 83°
outside (I forgot how to make the degree sign [I know how to do
it, Helen. -Maren]), and the humidity is low (for which I am
grateful, very grateful!!
Well, at the moment and for the next few years we will have 2
houses, this one by the little lake in West Harrison, Indiana
and another house, about 200 miles away in the little town of
Grandview,Indiana where we will be living in the Methodist
parsonage while Warren preaches at 2 little Methodist churches
in the area.
The first 2 Sundays have gone very well, but we will be busy...
we've already decided we can't be driving back here every week as
we'd planned. So we'll cut it back to 3 times a month now and
probably twice a month before long.
People are very nice in Grandview and Rockport, and Owensboro,
Kentucky which is the closest big city... The parsonage is nice and
clean and has Air Conditioning, for those days when the humidity
isn't low... but we haven't had to use it much because we are
surrounded by huge trees there, and that does make a difference in
keeping it cooler... so if you find yourself in the Evansville, In.
area give me an email holler... and drop by...
Theresa, I too am wondering what is happening to our reunion for
the class of '62. I've tried to email and call John Adkins ('62).
Maybe someone will respond to this email... I have already planned
a big trip back to Washington State to attend the reunion, and my
girlfriend from Tokyo, Japan will be joining me, and then I am
taking her on a sight seeing tour of Washington for a few weeks,
so I'm registering for Club 40, as it is to be that same weekend...
so I hope to see many of you '62ers there,,,,
I remember those hot days growing up in Richland too where we
walked everywhere, to the pool, shopping uptown or downtown, maybe
both... and the heat never stoped us from doing anything... there
is a neighborhood pool in Rockport, IN about 5 or 6 miles from the
parsonage and I hope to go visit there some hot afternoon after we
finally get moved in...
There are some Abe Lincoln things around there too. A state park
and a boyhood home museum set of buildings where I hope to get
involved, when we are not teaching Sunday School, or planning to
do something at church... but it will be fun, and interesting, and
doing this work for the Lord is what we want to be doing at this
time...
Greetings from the house by the little lake where there is a lovely
breeze blowing this afternoon. My foster cat is so glad we came
home again. We can't take her with us, as we are a block from
Hwy. 66 and I am afraid she is too used to roaming in a bigger
rural area to take her, so my neighbor who I adopted her from will
be looking after her again... and she is a hunter, as I think most
cats are...

Re: Tribute to my loving mother
In a previous sandstorm I had the opportunity to express the
challenges that every family faces when their parents get up in
years. Since that article, my dear Mother has passed away. I know
that this is the one thing that is inevitable for everyone, if we
are fortunate to live that long, but it does not make the passing
any easier. She was the "rock" that held our family together and
the challenges we face without her will not be easy. As children,
we did not realize just how strong she was, until she was gone.
She was always there when one of us needed her, and in her own way
kept us on a pretty straight path without us really knowing that
she was doing it. Her strength was not in judging us, but loving
us no matter what we did.
Mom passed away unexpectedly due to a fall she took in the middle
of the night. She was on the medication Cumadin (sp), which caused
her to bleed internally and could not be controlled. I know in my
heart that she lived a full life, but as a child, numbers mean
nothing, Moms are supposed to live "forever". She will live in this
BOMBER'S heart forever, but nothing takes the place of being able
to see her sitting in her chair and smiling when I walk through her
door every day to see her. She always had a smile and a big kiss
when I arrived and one just as big when I left. She was not only my
Mom but she was my good friend.
Evelyn Ella "Tootsie" Henjum will live forever in all the wonderful
memories she left behind. I can only hope that when my time comes
that I can leave behind with my family the legacy she left for me.
What a wonderful Mother she was.
I want to take this opportunity to thank all my Bomber friends who
helped me out during this sad time. I had emails from friends that
I have not heard from in a long time and two of my friends, Mary
Judd Hinz ('60) and Patti Jones ('60), were especially there for
me. Thank you so very much.

Yes, you have the beautiful days and nights in Western Washington
with views to die for. After my twenty years living there I find
the days of beauty and warmth are many more in the Richland area.
Many more days of warmth and not over taken by the chill of all
the water and low temperatures.
I was in Tacoma for my grandson's graduation the week of June 10th.
In my packing I knew the temperatures there and was not sure
what to pack knowing it would there when it came to keeping warm.
Thankfully I put in a long sweater that wasn't too heavy. What a
life saver. Wore it most days I was there. Did enjoy dinner at
Salty's at Redondo looking up the Puget Sound toward the San
Juans. Having lunch at Brown's Point at Archie's (outstanding
Hamburgers at Archie's) looking at Commencement Bay and all it's
splendor. An evening at the Cliff House at Brown's Point gave
a whole different perspective of Commencement Bay. All places
revisited I will take the greater Richland area any day. It took
me 43 years to get back here and a week to know I am home. As
Lora Homme Page ('60) said not long after I moved back here, "The
Government knew what they were doing when they chose this area to
build".
The other greater part of living here is that within an hour to an
hour half there are so many wonderous places to see. Traffic is
light and makes it easy to get to them all. Mid Columbia magazine
with each issue is writing wonderful articles about the East side
of the state. The issue that just arrived has an article about
Badger Mountain. Lots about the wine country also.
Supposed to be 108° by Thursday. I find it doesn't make much
difference when the temperatures rise so high because the air
conditioning during the hotter part of the day keeps it comfy. The
wonderful evenings sitting outside watching the stars is relaxing.
Looking forward to the luncheon on Saturday.

Well, you can imagine my excitement when I read Number 10's ('64)
note in the Sandstorm for Tuesday the 10th... A statue of the
Divine Mary Lou ('63)... I figured I would use the picture for a
screen saver and get Davis ('65) to help me steal the statue from
Granbury, TX at a later date... so you can also imagine my shock
when I saw the picture of the statue... I can assure you that the
sculptor (or caster or whatever) has NEVER laid eyes on our Mary
Lou... suffice it to say that I am not using Ray's picture as a
screen saver and have canceled my trip to Texas... I was hoping
the dear lady would grace us in Vancouver on the 21st for the
celebration of our pal Freddie Schafer's ('63... too soon... just
can't use RIP just yet) life and times but alas she tells me she is
getting married to three guys or something like that... something
to do with weddings anyway... if I got it wrong, ML, I know you
will forgive me... But she did mention that Jimbeaux ('63) and
her partner in crime Ellen W. ('63) would be on hand so all is not
lost... well I mean my heart is broken but hey... I'm a big boy...
it will mend I'm sure... I am sure... I'm pretty sure... but then
I don't have the picture as a screen saver... don't have the
statue... but I'll survive... yes I will... Oh poop... I'm gonna
go home and cry myself to sleep!

Don't ever look for my name on a "Hoopfest" (I call it "Foulfest")
roster. It is a very impressive festival with 6,000 teams playing
on about 500 courts for two days in downtown Spokane. But four
years ago I told my friend Ray (’64) that if I was ever tempted
to play, that he should remind me that I said I will never be a
part of it.
According to the local paper, this years event resulted in 16
broken bones, and eight fights requiring police intervention that
led to numerous arrests (and the men's games were even rougher).
Two years ago a woman was pushed through a plate class window.
I believe this was the 18th consecutive year that organizers
have failed to give a sportsmanship award to any of the 24,000
participants. Two years ago I played in a few other tournaments
that were equally rough. In one tourney the Dayton Police
intervened during the championship ship game and declared a
winner and threatened to arrest their opponent.
After that, I decided I would never play again without referees
(preferable a loved one). Even my regular weekend games with
friends are no longer fun with their cavalier attitude toward
intentional fouls. I frankly began to fear I might "over" retaliate
some day and regret it forever. So, no Hoopfest for this wimp.
For now on, my basketball will be limited to my back yard, like it
was 45 years ago, scoring at ease against imaginary foes like Elgin
Baylor and Jerry West. Now that is therapeutic!
-Jim House ('63) ~ Mead, WA where this afternoon the temperature
is approaching 100° and I got the A/C on full blast. It's OK

Re: How many people can say
They got friends Like the Bombers... the '65ers were in Richland
for Cool Desert Nights a month ago... I had bought a little '36
Ford 3-window coupe with a nasty big block from Seattle and Jimmie
Adair ('65-'67... I love saying that... eat yer hearts out you guys
and gals with only 1 or 2 classes behind your names) went and
picked it up for me and had it at his house waiting for me...
(I'm enclosing a picture for Maren ('63-'64) to figure out
how to post... I know I'm spozed to send them somewhere else)...
AlumniSandstorm.com/htm2007/Xtra/Any/070712-Rivers-36Ford.jpg
Now as I've said many times before... most Bombers have always
considered Jimmie to be the ultimate hot rodder... he and I were
swappin' cars with each other when we were 15... but a few years
back Doc 40 (Jimmie) modernized his '40 Ford that he's had since we
were 16 or so into a luxury vehicle (shortly after that he became a
biker dude as well)... he drove this little '36 of mine and called
me to tell me it was unsafe at any speed... I knew then and there
that we were not speaking the same language... I told Jimmie that
the ultimate hot rod hadda be mean, loud and have the directional
stability of a shopping cart at speed... otherwise it ain't no
hot rod... he agreed... the '36 must be a true hot rod... Well to
continue the story... Jim Stull ('62) was headed to Phoenix this
week and mentioned it to Jimmie... In true Shelley ('63-RIP) style,
Stull was gonna ride his Harley... Jimmie mentioned that if he took
his truck and trailer he could drop the '36 off to me... Jim took
up the challenge and just moments ago we unloaded the car and Jim
headed for Phoenix... now how many people can say they have friends
like we Bombers?

Your entry today made me smile big time. I was homesick for 43
years. NO MORE! No I won't stop talking about wonderful Richland
and area. Richland is waiting for you. Get your plans ready and
send your money to Ann Thompson, aka Anna May Wann ('49) treasurer
for Club 40. A weekend here will help some of the home sickness.
Also plans for retirement here would help. Many Bombers are still
gravitating back here to retire.
Remember, Margo, laying on the grass growing up watching the stars?
Still a great thing to do here. (Do not even need a blanket to lay
on.) My granddaughter was on one of her first visits after I moved
here. In 10 year old excitement (and a big smile) she came running
into the house saying as loud as she could, "Grandma the grass
doesn't hurt me here". Knowing exactly what she meant from living
in Western Washington the ground was always hard from rain and
dampness we had a good laugh together.

Re: Weather report
Weather people have backed down a bit and are saying that we aren't
going to have 108 temperatures now. Can change tomorrow or in ten
minutes. Lightning is expected. Not good. A little overcast this
evening didn't cool it down. I turned off the air conditioner for a
bit but an hour later had it back on. Guess I have to sleep with it
on tonight instead of listening to my pond waterfall. Checked the
weather just now. Temperatures back up again in the projections. At

Re: Sacramento Luncheon
Just a reminder that Friday, the 20th of July, is another Bomber
luncheon in Sacramento. This time we are holding it at the
"Firehouse" in Old Sacramento, a beautiful restaurant with
marvelous food. We have some out of town guests who will be
attending including Charlie Gant ('53), Phil Gant ('54), Norma
Loescher Boswell ('53), Tom McKeown ('53) and his wife Darlene
Card McKeown ('54)... and hopefully a bunch of the regulars. The
gab-fest starts at 11:30AM with lunch following, I believe, with
a trip to the Railroad Museum afterwards for those interested.

Re: Larry Coryell ('61)
Larry was the featured artist last night at the Anthology (a newly
opened dinner club) in the "Little Italy" section of downtown San
Diego. My wife, Bev ('61 Ike High Cadet) and I were lucky enough
to be in attendance. Larry was joined by his son, Julian, and his
wife of only two months, Tracy who has a wonderful voice. For
nearly two hours they blew the doors off the place. Incredible
music and artistry from start to finish. The highlights for me
were the tribute to the legendary Wes Montgomery played by Larry
and Julian and then Tracy's vocal rendition of "give me one reason
to stay here and I'll turn right back around". I'm sure the song
title is in there somewhere but...?? I think that Kim Cairns did
it originally. I'm sure the more musically informed Bombers out
there can fill in the title and history.
Larry came out for a few minutes before the set to talk to us and
introduce his bride. He is a very gracious and talented musician.

Now you have me smiling. You mentioned the "dry heat" of Richland
while growing up. In 1994 when my brother Howard ('72 RIP) and I
were in Richland for my mother's memorial service we both commented
on how "muggy" it felt in the park along the Columbia River. I
guess because of the increased irrigation (at least more than it
used to be when we were younger) the humidity had gotten worse.
We were out one day and even though it was only in the 90s the
humidity was pushing 40%. The worst part about the heat is trying
to get to sleep. After the sun goes down it almost feels worse than
it has all day and I'm laying in bed sweating. The temps have come
down some for now in western Washington. Hopefully Monday's mid 70s
won't be too cool for a classmate and her sister who are stopping
by for lunch and a visit. She says living in Texas makes anything
below 70 cold to her.
Bomber cheers, Vicki.
Re: Wayward Deer on Property - Jul 14, 2007
I told the story of the deer a few weeks ago. I followed this
little guy into my complex Saturday morning. The property is fenced
in and the fence is too high for him to get over. Authorities told
me he found his way in so he'll find his way out.

Re: Charter Communications Service
Last Wednesday, as we drove home through heat and smoke from visiting
my "MUCH YOUNGER SISTER," Marilyn Swan Beddo's ('63) home near Salt
Lake City, Utah, I silently reminisced about our fishing trip up into
the High Uinta Mountains. Reminisce is all I can do on those long
trips as Mrs. Pappy is good for 20 minutes or 20 miles (her own
words) and then she is fast asleep, "leaving the driving to us" (I
mean me). But, more on Pappy's Fly Fishing Misadventures, at a later
date.
As the miles ground slowly and drudgingly along, I found myself
fantasizing that I was flying along on a lengthy, low level air
strike mission into Afghanistan. It was easy to get caught up in my
imagination as we skirted a massive range fire that had virtually
burned off "Black Pine Peak" to the west of us (in the Juniper/
grassland along I-84 just after, crossing into Idaho northwest of
Snowville, Utah). Several fires were still burning uphill, with high
flames, in the canyons. With all of the pillars of smoke rising
straight up. It did look like a video report following an air strike
in Afghanistan.
Anyway, after numerous potty breaks, refueling, and resupply with
coffee and munchie stops, we completed our mission, landing at
Burbank International ... when my copilot/navigator finally woke up.
We participated in some serious R&R on Thursday and then on Friday
(the 13th) morning I sat down at the computer to get caught up, only
to find out that our wonderful Charter Communications Fiber Optics,
"Put all yer eggs in one basket" package was ... kaput. We had no
phone, no Internet, and worst of all ... no TV Cable service! I was
really concerned as Friday night was the premier program for the new
season of "Dog Fights" on the History Channel. If not my favorite TV
program, it is very nearly so. A similar situation posed itself for
Jeanne in relation to "MONK" and another detective show. So, Jeanne,
aka Mrs. Pappy, called Charter, who very professionally informed her
that they were very aware of trouble on the line and it would be
taken care of shortly.
Right!
The next morning (Saturday), quite disgruntled Mrs. Pappy and Pappy
arose to still ... no phone, no Internet, continuous coverage of a
blizzard on the TV and the irritating memories of premiere shows ...
unseen. During a second call to Charter, a gentleman (I'm still
trying to be nice) revealed that there was indeed, "no trouble" on
our line, but they would have someone come out to check it out soon
(somewhere between whenever and whenever).
Well, by mid-afternoon, Mrs. Pappy is emitting a continuous low
wailing moan and Pappy was pacing the floor threatening to rip out
the cable, call the "Dish" folks and the old phone company for new
installations. So, we called Charter for the third time and a young
lady informs us that she will make an appointment for us on Monday as
they have no "Techs" available over the weekend. I scream, "Who's s_
_ _ _ _ _ _ who here?" Oh, that stands for "spoofing." Yes, it does.
What were you thinking?
It was a long, long Sunday. On Monday, a most efficient young
"geeentillllman" arrives in a white four-wheeled steed to solve our
problem. After checking our box, he shows me a gnarly looking little
connector and cheerfully says, "This is your problem!" So, now we
have TV, telephone, and Internet service once again. But, now I am
most skeptical...
My neighbors inform me that they had no problems over the weekend.
However, on Friday, most curiously, about the time our service went
out, they noticed a Charter Technician who was turning off one
neighbor's service as they had sold their house and were moving. He
made several trips between their box and ours. Hmmm, coincidence?
Maybe, but come to think of it, the tech today sure didn't spend much
time at our box. I'm really beginning to question the value of this
"package deal?"
But, I have to admit that the bottom line is that I got a lot of yard
work done, ran the shotgun club all day Sunday, and other than that
it was a very quiet weekend. Ummmm, maybe I'll unplug that box myself
ever once in a while.

I am wondering ... where could I mount a dish?

Re: Summer heat
Well, we have survived 3 Sundays of preaching and living in a small
community of less than 1,000 people... which is usually very positive
and fun, but we do feel a bit like we are living in a fish bowl.
However, I am off to a quilting class which is something I've
always wanted to do. And we are growing to love the people in our
congregations, and all the people we've met have been friendly, so
we are settling in.
Related to dry heat versus humidity. I remember the first time I was
ever exposed to real southern heat and humidity driving in an un-air-
conditioned car from Beaumont, TX to Houston, TX, way back in l966.
I thought I was going to faint when I walked into an air conditioned
store. I'll agree, that dry heat is easier to take than humid heat.
When my husband and I first moved from Sacramento, CA to Cincinnati,
OH in l974, we used to play tennis all the time. We'd get up early
(like 5am) to play here but the first time we went back home to
Brewster, WA we were playing tennis at noon in l05° and it felt
O.K. to us.
Sadly, now I don't play tennis at 5am or any other time of the day.
I do walk a lot however.
Looking forward to the class of '62 Reunion along with Club 40
September 7, 8, & 9.

Re: Music Trivia
The song you mentioned is by Tracy Chapman. "Give Me One Reason" is
the title I believe. "Give me one reason to stay here, and I'll turn
right back around" is the first line. I happened to see her open for
Bob Dylan at the Gorge Amphitheater about 20 years ago. She is a good
songwriter and you could categorize her as a folk singer or singer/
songwriter. Seeing Larry Coryell ('61) at an intimate nightclub
setting would be quite good. I still love to go to concerts but the
ones in the small venues are more attractive these days where you
really feel like you're part of the show.

Re: Hoop Fest
I agree with your opinion about Hoop Fest in Spokane. It may have
gotten a little too big and its always been highly competitive. My
nieces played and the competition at all levels was fierce. Its hard
to have one court monitor control a game of half court basketball.
Its either a will to win and a great competitor or I will do anything
to win. Besides dodging flagrant fouls, flying elbows, and pushing
and shoving, you have to avoid the pot holes in the old streets of
Spokane.

Most of the past 2 weeks have been a bit on the cool side for short
pants but it's a whole different story in direct sunshine. Evenings
are wonderful and many are spent outside by the little fire pit in
the late sun. The problem with that is, it can be 1:30 in the morning

Thursday I will go down to Homer to see more old friends and enjoy

Re: All Bomber Lunch - 7/14/07
http://alumnisandstorm.com/Lunches/Current-ALL/00.html
What do I say? There are Bomber luncheons and there are Bomber
luncheons. Everyone has it's own statement. This luncheon had it's
definite statement with the friendliness, the meetings and the
caring.
I arrived about noon, an hour before the luncheon. JD Diner has been
attracting more and more Bombers no matter when I have been in there.
When I arrived and started setting up with Hannah (the owner) I met
Bombers who were leaving. Went out to the car and met more. These
Bombers did not know of the luncheon. They left with promises to come
again.
Meanwhile the luncheon group began to arrive. Word had spread in
attendance would be Gary Persons ('57) and wife Jan Bollinger Persons
('60) who were visiting from Spokane. Always good to have visitors
from other Bomber luncheons. Definitely exciting to have the hosts of
another all Bomber luncheon visiting.
Four birthdays were celebrated. Lorin St. John ('55) (Lorin, you
missed on the pie so there will be a piece for you when you are there
next time). Glen Rose ('58), George "Pappy" Swan ('59) and Jan
Bollinger Persons ('60). After pie was delivered to each birthday
person, everyone sang Happy Birthday. Pie is homemade by the cooks
at JD's. Missy Keeney ('59) was coerced into singing her version of
Happy Birthday. The Black Balloons in the song always gets a good
laugh from everyone as well as the whole song is a hoot. Thanks
Missy.
In attendance: George "Pappy" Swan ('59) and spouse Jeanne ('58-Alaska),
Alan Stephens ('66) and wife Nina ('64-Honolulu) are enjoying the
drive from Kent, WA and the luncheons so much they attended for the
second month in a row. I think they said they would be back next
month. Julia Alexander ('65) who recently moved here was happy to
finally attend. The smile on her face shows it. Dona McCleary Belt ('54)
always with wonderful hugs for everyone, Our own Birthday singer
Missy Keeney ('59), Kathy Hoff Conrad ('64) who is a volunteer for
A.C.E.S. and always has good reports about what the A.C.E.S. is
doing. Donna Thorson Whiteside ('66) and her husband Bob ('43-Sunnyside).
Yes he said, he graduated 1943. If we could all look so outstanding
at 82 years old. Marj Qualheim Haggard ('60) another host of a
luncheon. Kaylene Henjum Livingston ('60), Mary Judd Hinz ('60) who
looks like she is ready to dance which she does so well with her
hubby Ron, Kaylene with her husband Herman ('60-Finley). With a
little start of announcement from me they let the group know with
pride they have been married for 43 years. That brought a lot of
cheers from everyone. Lloyd West ('63), Vera Smith Robbins ('58),
Gary Persons ('57), Kaye Ivers ('60), Marsha Lawall Hatchcox ('60),
Alice Rhodes ('52-Colville, WA) and husband Dave Rhodes ('52wb),
last at introductions but last is always the best. Carol Rose ('62-
Sunnyvale, CA) wife of Glen Rose ('58), Dan Haggard ('57), Burt
Pierard ('59), Judy Willox ('61wb & '82) and Nick Nelson ('56).
Gus Keeny ('57), Gus you look great after your surgery.
Be at the next luncheon for the announcement of something new we
will be starting at the luncheons, or stay tuned for next month's
Sandstorm Entry. Suggestion came from the cook at JD diner, Janey.
Now approved by the owner Hannah.
For those who are attending Club 40 in September and wish to attend
the luncheon on Saturday September 9, 2007 I am having to ask for
reservations by Thursday September 7. Please, all attending make
reservations which I am taking now until then. This will help Hannah
plan for how many will be there. We had a large group last year.

Waiting to see more Sandstorm entries about your rodeo days. Really

Re: Jim House's ('63) basketball experience
I can certainly relate to Jim House's comments about elbows flying
when there are no officials to officiate basketball games.
About 20 years ago when I first started working for the Seattle
Parks and Recreation, I was the assistant director of the South Park
Community Center in south Seattle. Each evening during the spring,
summer and fall we would have "pick-up" basketball games in the
gymnasium. On my first day on the job the director asked me to go
into the gym and make sure the games were orderly and no one got
hurt. Most of the players were black and I was this lily white guy
from the suburbs who had never worked with minorities in my life.
Well, I got a quick education. Every time a team brought the ball
down court and missed a shot, the players would argue for about five
minutes about who fouled who. In the beginning, I thought it was my
job to break up each argument. I soon learned that this was their
mode of operation and (usually) no fist went flying. I finally put a
time clock on court side and limited each game to 15 minutes. Years
later, when I was the director of Green Lake Community Center in
north Seattle, where "pick up" basketball was King, I wouldn't allow
my teenage son to play in those games for fear that he would get
injured.

the internet much as I have been on the road since June 9. Did not
know about the lunch or I would have been there. Would have loved
visiting you three. Been a long long time since saying hi and bye
to Shari ('67).
...I drove from Huntington Beach, CA to Reedville, VA where I spent
four days watching squirrels frolic in the trees while trapping,
netting, imprisoning and torturing these little blue crabs in a five
gallon bucket... after taking a good look at these beautiful little
creatures and releasing them back into the wild I would drive into
Reedville and eat them in a sandwich, coated and fried (fried in the
South means deep fried), soft shell and all, or just go with the
grilled shrimp piled on a bed of grits. The grits were actually much
better than the grits at the Waffle House, which surprised me. Way
too much work cracking those tiny blue crab after years of Dungeness
whacking and butter dipping in Washington state. I love Virginia in
July.
Right now I'm in Rainier, WA for a couple days and then need to
go home. Driving across South Dakota and hanging out in Deadwood
watching Wild Bill get shot at 1, 3 and 5 pm in a bar he had never
stepped into was almost too much to take in another "theme town
America" historical moment. The original bar burned down sometime
around 1900 along with most of the town just like about every town
in America did around 1900. Deadwood was sort of like being in
Tombstone, AZ standing where Morgan Earp caught a bullet in that
bar... that is now a woman's clothing store, if I remember correctly.
Tombstone burned to the ground in 1910. Maybe someday someone will
give us an American history book with at least some truth in it
instead of theme town... ahhh, why bother, nobody wants to hear the
truth anyway. Fantasy is not scary. I'm fried and need to go home.

Re: Weather
Boy, was our weather man wrong. He called for a "slight" chance of
rain today. Well, here it is 9:30 am and it has been raining since
about 4:00 am. Don't get me wrong we really need the moisture. My
apartment complex chooses not to have sprinkler systems and counts on
the moisture we get from the clouds to keep the lawns and flowers
going. The grass was starting to get mighty brown the last week or
so. They do water the plants around the office area by hand but
that's as far as it goes.
Pappy, I know what you mean about that drive from Utah up into
Idaho. When I was living in Kansas I'd use I-80 across a bit of
Nebraska, southern Wyoming, into Utah, then on up to Richland. That
stretch after Tremonton is one lonely drive. When I went to school in
Ogden for a year I drove down from Richland the day after Christmas.
Thankfully I didn't have any snow but from the Idaho border all the
way to Ogden for the most part I was driving in fog. It was so thick
in some places I couldn't even see the road let alone the line at the
side of the road to know you're still OK.

When I was a child in Muskogee, OK I can remember my Mother coming
in to our bedroom at 3am and sprinkling the sheets with water from
her ironing bottle in the hopes that with the big fan going it would
cool us down. The really nice thing about the Tri-Cities is that it
nearly always cools down in the evenings. I can make it if I can get
my sleep.
Whenever I drive through the Y area I remember that in '47 there was
a traveling circus that set up just northeast of the Y in the flats
that bordered the road. This was before the flood of '48.
Driving on GWWay coming into town doesn't seem right with the
community house gone and just a big hole in the ground. We spent a
lot of time in that old building. Mother always thought that a pool
hall was the reason that so many young people went bad. We would
sit at the lunch counter and watch the older men playing pool and
billiards. They seemed normal to me.

Re: Snow memories
So the heat has everyone down, why don't we swap snow stories?
Every time I see Gus Keeney's ('57) name I think of snow. It did
snow in Richland and even enough to sled on occasionally. The year
I am recalling it was maybe 6” and we packed it down with our sleds.
Then a little more snow. And some warm weather, enough to put about
a quarter inch crust on top of the new snow. Some of us "big" guys
decided to do some late afternoon sledding. Back of the high school
before the "new science building" was built. I know there were lots
of kids there that afternoon but the only ones I can name for sure
are Gus Keeney ('57) and Skip Hutton ('57). Some how I was chosen to
ride atop the stack Gus, Skip, there may have been one other but I
don't recall for sure, … … … there I was flopped atop this tower.
Away we went. Gus thought it would be fun to do some swerves, oops
should tell the guy on top! I didn't hang on to well, and ended up
sliding down on my own tummy (MUCH flatter then!). I was laughing so
hard that when the two guys (Gus and Skip) ran over to pick me up I
didn't even know I had a cut, from that crust of ice, near my eye,
just under the eyebrow. Well you all know how an eye wound can bleed,
they both thought I was going to bleed to death. By this time it
began to hurt too. Skip did the neatest thing, he went over to a
clean bit of snow got under the crust and with a hand full of that
clean snow applied to the cut it soon stopped bleeding and the hurt
went into an ache from the cold. Smart guy! We all decided that was
enough for the day and I was walked home... to make sure I was going
to be alright. I still have a very slight scar, but it may be the
reason I still have the fond memory.
Anyone else???

a boat trip up (or is it down) the Columbia River to "white Bluffs"

That leaves us with barely time to squeeze in the Bomber luncheon at
West Richland, sounds good to me, and, of course, I'll run and visit
my mom in between somewhere... before 6pm....
Sounds like fun, see you then...

The cost is $45.00 that will cover Greens fees - a cart - and (of

We will arrange the groups by class, as close as we can, and just go
out and have a good time.
I must have your commitment by August 15th to hold tee times. If you

>>From: Donni Clark Dunphy ('63)
Hi Bombers!
Well, I am back from Ireland, where in spite of many changes in that
land, economically and otherwise, we had a wonderful time. It was my
husband's fourth trip and my 2nd. He has Irish relatives there and
even though he has more German blood than Irish in his veins, I think
he would like to claim that he was pure Irish.
Would you believe that I bumped into someone on the Waterford tour
that asked me if I knew RAY STEIN ('64) and BRUCE BROWN ('64)?! This
Yank from Washington (his card) was from WallaWalla. When I told him
I was from the Tri-Cities, he said, "Ooooo, hate them Bulldogs!" I
proudly told him I wasn't a Bulldog, I was a BOMBER! He said, "Oh!
That's even worse!" He played the Bombers and especially remembered
Ray and Bruce. He has been a school principal and his name is Dennis
Gowan. He now lives in Yelm.
It was my husband's dream to take all of his children to Ireland, so
this time we took our 4th, plus our oldest grandchild. Noelle has
always been the fun-loving, out-going one so on our second night she
was up-front in the pub, singing with the guys. She doesn't drink
either. It was a joy to travel with them. We made a big loop, so we
could give them a taste of what Ireland is renown for. We toured
castles, went to a Medieval night of food and music at Bunratty,
kissed the Blarney stone, went on the jaunting carts at Muckross. The
driver of our cart told us he was wanted for murder (a wild Irish
story-teller no doubt) but Marissa (our granddaughter) and I carried
through with it, found clues and developed a murder mystery of our
own. We freaked our daughter out as we saw shadows in the woods
moving behind the walls, a newspaper headline for wanted murderer
in the newspaper that night, whispers behind closed doors at "Molly
Darcy's Pub", and heard a body being drug across the floor in the
middle of the night. We were laughing so hard because we really had
Noelle going. "Murder at Muckross Stables" could be a best seller! We
did the Guiness Brewery tour this time which was very impressive. We
also had sweets and tea at "Queen of Tarts", and ate Fish and Chips
at Leo Burdocks famous place, all in Dublin. We stayed at a B&B that
Matt McConaughey and the film crew stayed at while making a movie in
Wicklow. The porridge and bread there were out of this world! The
owner took us up into the hills. His family had lived on the land for
600 years. We watched him command his sheep dogs to go get the sheep
bring them all down into one particular pasture and then bring out a
special little bottle-fed lamb so that Marissa could cuddle and pet
her. It was amazing to watch those sheep dogs do just as they were
told, just as if they understood every word he said. So, Marissa, got
to hold her lambie named Freckles. We also took a wild Atlantic boat
ride out to the Cliffs of Moher to view them from the sea. There were
small-craft warnings latter that day. Marissa and her cousins had a
blast (thank God they didn't go over board!). She had so much fun
with her 5 teen-age Irish cousins, riding horseback, climbing
hay stakes, going through the Bunratty Folk Park (much like Knotts),
having a pic taken in old-fashioned clothing, eating 99 soft, ice
cream cones (like ours use to be, Yum!) and trying all the different
candy, Crunchie bars being our favorite still!
I was sad to hear on my return that Fred Schafer ('63-RIP) had
died. I will always treasure the memories I have of Fred. He was fun
loving, always put one at ease, never ran out of things to say, was
up-beat, cheerful and had such a good heart. I will always remember
a hot summer day at the Water Follies, riding in that spinning cage,
swimming in the lagoon, and picnic and watermelon fight by the
Columbia River. I am so glad I got to see him last year and enjoy his
company, his cooking, his good humor the walks, the laughs and the
hugs. My condolences to you Ann and all of your family. May God be
with you and give you peace at this time and may Fred rest in peace.
We are going to a family wedding this fall to Philadelphia, PA. Do
any Bombers live there or does anyone know the area and can share
good places to stay and things to do? We want to go out to the Amish
country and see Gettysburg for sure. I would love to stay in an Amish
run B&B.
Also, I am writing a story for my l4 year old granddaughter on what
it was like being l4 in '59. Can anyone help me remember words we use
to say, besides "neat", "square" and "cherry"? The Bubble cut was
in, thanks to Sandra Dee, and the crinoline petticoats were on the
decline. Does anyone remember our bucket bag purses (loved those!).
What were those wide, cinch, belts called that we wore and the white
blouses with the ruffles on the sleeves, neck, front and bottom? I
will forever remember Shelley McCoy ('63-RIP) singing "Great Balls of
Fire" at the 9th grade Carmichael party. It was my first year to go
to Disneyland, be a cheerleader, go to Hi-Spot and get kissed by
Jerry Taylor ('63), who I think all the girls had a crush on. Did
all your moms read the movie magazines like "Silver Screen" and
"Photoplay".
If anyone can help me out with some memories from those years I
would be grateful.
Have a great day!

Patti--I'm glad to see you got your picture taken as part of the get

Re: My "mini" Bomber lunch.
Rick, it was an unofficial gathering. Shari Napora ('67) has a son in
Kent and Darlene Napora ('69) was here visiting from Austin, TX. They
had a family gathering in Gig Harbor. Dar said some of the family she
had never met. I have been e-mail "pals" with Darlene for about the
last year and a half or so. She broke her ankle and was laid up for
a while so we starting communicating through the internet. She had
told me she'd like to meet for lunch or dinner while in the area.
They have an elderly aunt in Centralia and wanted to see her, also.
Shari has seen her but Dar hasn't since she was a kid. After checking
the aunt's schedule we agreed to meet at Applebee's for lunch on
Monday. The three of us had a great conversation and lunch along
with some laughs. The waiter was very obliging and took 3 different
pictures as we each had a digital camera. It would have been fun to
meet you, Rick. Sorry, we just didn't advertise it as a get together
as such.
Alan, as to Dar being a blonde. It's not really blonde it's just some
lighter shading to her dark hair she always had. My hair was always
blonde but now it's pretty much gray even though one can't tell it in
the picture.
If any of you out there get together for just a quick lunch or visit
with a classmate or 2 how about sending a picture like I did? I had
a great time and I think you would too. Here's to the next time,
perhaps.

My wife and I recently visited Gordon and Ruby Pappas at their home
in Castro Valley, CA, where they have lived since leaving Richland
in the early sixties. They are well and happy, still busy with their
musical lives and a large family scattered over a long distance.
We had a very pleasant time catching up on old memories. Favorite
recollections for me are the Rafael Mendez concert in 1954 and the
"Good News" production.
Gordon & Ruby are enjoying their sixty-second year of marriage.
The Pappases had just returned from a trip to New York where they

Interesting for me to hear about my brother's "misadventures." I'm
wondering how many people sport the tell-tale scars. Gus and my
cousin, Tommy Ely, put me in a wagon and shoved me down the hill in
front of my aunt's home in Jonesville, VA. I was about 3 or 4. Of
course, I knew nothing about steering or stopping the stupid thing
and went flying under a barbed wire fence at the bottom with my arms
in the air. Ripped the heck out of my arm. My country doctor uncle,
sadist that he was, took me to his office and stitched me up without
the aid of any anesthetic. To this day I pass out when anyone gets
near me with a needle. I think it's time that those who have suffered
'abuse' at the hands of Gus Keeney should come forward.

Re: Snow stories
Alice Hanthorn Johnson's ('50_ story about the sledding mishap
brought back a memory from my own files. It had snowed lightly
Saturday night and into Sunday morning, probably about 1962. The
family left for church on schedule and when we arrived at CUP, I
thought it would be fun to slam the car door and knock off the
accumulation. What I didn't plan on was getting my glove caught on
the mechanism of the door and slamming the door on my index finger.
Oh I slammed it hard... so hard in fact that as I stood there
screaming for my Dad to open the door, my finger was taking on the
configuration of the door jam. Needless to say, we missed church and
went straight to Kadlec emergency room. It may be hard to believe,
but my finger was not even broken. Stupid kid trick to be sure.

Re: Small Bomber World
Just wanted to confirm the adage that you meet Bombers everywhere/
anywhere.
Yesterday Tom ('59) and I drove up to Edmonds from our little
pied-a-terre in Seattle (Ballard.) We were looking forward to
checking out the little downtown village again and having lunch at
a favorite restaurant there. Well, to our surprise the restaurant
is closed on Sunday so we did a u-turn and as fate would have it, we
parked right behind a 'green' car like ours. We were departing at the
same time the couple in front of us was exiting their car, so I said
"Are you getting the mileage estimates like we are?" Answer: "We
don't know yet, just got the car yesterday." So chit-chat, chit-chat,
to find that he was having trouble locking the trunk; Tom showed him
how ours is tuned with the electronic key system and he noticed our
Bomber license plate holder. "I'm a Bomber, too!!" We all had a
chuckle over this surprise/amazement! (Tom and Manny unraveled the
'mystery' of the unlockable trunk... some little button must be
pushed at the dash... and other machinations to set it correctly.)
So, to make the longer story a bit shorter, we were happy to meet
the 1955 Bomber, Manny Mankowski and his wife Sue (NAB.) Delightful
people, of course!! I did not know many in that class, but knew of
his brilliant sister, Aida, in my brother's class of 1957. He is a
good fellow and I am telling you that he has a wonderful smile...
(sparkly/twinkley, heh... for you, Manny!) and owns a new, cool car!!
They are from Kirkland and Aida is in B.C.
It was a good day of good fortune.

Re: Farewell Freddie
The picnic / BBQ in Vancouver to celebrate the passing and life of
Freddie Schafer ('63) was more like an "All Bombers" reunion. It was
obvious that Freddie was loved by many people. I enjoyed visiting
with many old Bomber friends and meeting some other Bombers that I
did not know. I especially enjoyed visiting with Mr. Rex Davis ('49),
our elementary school PE teacher at Lewis & Clark. Mr. Davis is a
real inspiration to all who knew him.
Annie Engel Schafer ('63), you are loved by many people as well. We
all pray for you and the rest of your family.
Thanks to all who made this event a joyful one.

Re: A Celebration
Not sure if it is the same for everybody. From those with whom I have
discussed it, it seems to be. Harken back to your 25th reunion...
if you haven't had it yet, you are in for a treat... Before the
25th, everyone is still smarting from some silly injury to the ego,
gathering stuff with which to impress others and bound and determined
to show their classmates that they have "arrived"... the "Joneses"
have been surpassed and have no chance to catch up... with Bill
or Bob or Ted... At the 25th... we returned to maybe 3rd grade or
earlier... the time when everyone knew everyone and competition was
limited to giving the best valentine to the girl of your dreams...
unsigned of course... or signed "the masked avenger"...
That was the feeling of the Gathering to celebrate the life and
times of Freddie Schafer ('63). What a day. Of course going to a Big
Kid's party was a little intimidating for me... I was worried that
I wouldn't know a lot of people, since I only get to sit at the Big
Kid's table now and then... not so... but I was really impressed that
Cecilia Bennett ('65) headed right over to a big crowd of '63 kids
and seemed to know everyone... forgot her bro (Earl) was from the
Gold Medal Class. The weather cooperated, tho those coming from the
North said that they hit huge rain just before arriving in Vancouver.
Upon arriving at the park we were met with green and gold balloons
to mark the spot. Luckily, La Mont ('63) was moving his car as we
arrived and knew which area was staked out for the gathering... Tom
Hemphill ('62) was setting up his BBQ and seemed extremely happy to
see my silly mug approaching... I was reminded that I was to be the
hamburger flipper... I let him know that allowing me near a BBQ could
be hazardous to the health of all participants... that said I was
free to play gadfly with all the folks attending... Tom ('62) and
Mickey ('66) were mistaken for each other all day... I think Alan
Fishback ('61) was called every first name a but Alan. Rex Davis ('49)
was there, of course, looking younger and certainly more fit than
any of the rest of us... he did a thing with his leg during his
reminiscing about Freddie's gymnastic abilities that would have laid
the rest of us up for a week or so... Jimbeaux ('63) and Ellen W.
('63) arrived looking dapper as usual... Ellen gave me the news
I already knew that the lovely Mary Lou ('63) wouldn't be in
attendance... but she had a hug for me anyway... Paula Jill ('64)
bopped in with her little fluffy companion in tow (a puppy not a new
boyfriend)... Number '32 ('63) was thrilled when the bomb arrived...
not sure he ever stopped hugging it... I really think that if he
didn't live so far away, he should be the keeper of the bomb... not
sure how Mrs. 32 would feel about him sleeping with it tho... he
stayed at another hotel and left before I could ask him if he wanted
to go to dinner Saturday nite... the food was wonderful tho Ann was
worried the salads would spoil as there were so many left overs...
after we ate, we all took the opportunity to share Freddie
memories... Dave Hanthorn ('63) put it so well when he said he didn't
have any "Freddie Stories" he had Freddie Memories... well put.
We were all kind of reminded that with guys like Pook ('63 RIP) or
Shelley ('63 RIP) it's just natural to have Pook or Shelley
stories... but Freddie was a different breed... Not to suggest that
we don't all have wonderful Pook and Shelley memories. Everyone who
spoke emoted the love and affection we all felt and feel for Freddie
and Ann. I noted Donna Bowers ('63) mentioned hugging in her entry
the other day... There was more hugging going on than at a family
reunion, which is pretty much what this felt like... family...
Everyone had such fond memories to share... We even learned how much
Freddie put down on Ann's wedding (or maybe engagement) ring! Rod
Peterson ('63) let us know about his and Freddie's arrest records and
of learning about "echo" in an empty "big pool"... He was able to
manage the stories without tears longer than Carolyn Roe ('63)...
which come to think of it wasn't all that hard... I found out
that Rosann Benedict ('63) knows more about current (and classic)
movies than anyone I've met... I now have a list of "must sees"...
It was good to know that even Number '32 can still recall his most
embarrassing moment from school... Even a star like Jim carries the
scars of childhood... hopefully he lets Mrs. 32 button his shirts
or at least check them before he goes out in public... Jimbeaux has
since reminded me of more stories about Freddie... so maybe wh
