the flour beetles that won.

Hi Cathy,
I would love to have coffee or juice and get together with you
for a visit. I graduated in 1965 and my name is Donna Fredette.
I am going to Chicago for a few days and then will be back next
week.
As long as the weather doesn't get too dicey I would be up for
driving to Seattle. I live in Redmond.
Sounds like you are having fun reconnecting to your bliss!
That's neat that you teach at Carmichael. That's where I went
to school and I have been wishing I could have been there during
this snow season to watch the new generation of kids having a
blast.
Let me know when a good time is for you and I will meet you!
Bomber Cheers!

Happy GHD. I hope everyone had a great Ground Hog Day. Salute
to Punx Phil, Bill Murray, and all shadow watchers.
As I was cruising the big city this morning I see 2 landmarks,
at least in my opinion, being torn down. The old Richland
Library, Harry Kramer Center, and other is now history. Its now
a pile of rubble next to the city of Richland police station. I
remember going to that library and searching for books and
information on old card files. When it was the Harry Kramer
center I attended many receptions, parties, and even wrestling,
seeing some classic characters from the local or regional
Saturday afternoon matches before there was WWF pay per views.
The bigger blow was the Richland American League concession
stand/announcer building was flattened. Maybe it was time but
it was there my whole lifetime. I played from about 1964-'66 in
little league, and not well truth be told. The field is still
there, of course, named Floyd Gates field. If anyone knows when
that little building was erected let me know.

I thought the Bombers might enjoy this site.
This is no ordinary jukebox. I found it very interesting
and I use it nearly every day. Brings back many memories,
some sad and some very moving....
http://www.tropicalglen.com/
Once there add the site to your Favorites! This ones a
keeper. As you will see when you click on this site, there
is a Jukebox-but it is no ordinary jukebox.
It will play all of your favorite songs from 1950 through
1982. Each year has a scroll or drop down box that shows
all the great songs for that year. Most years have over 40
songs.
Once you click on a song it will play and when it finishes
it automatically plays the next song in the list and
continues until it has played all the songs.
This is really cool. Have fun with it.....!!
It has a volume control which you should use in conjunction
with your computers volume control.
One of the best features is that it will play in the
background. That means you can be doing other computer work
on a different screen. For those are not too familiar, just
open this Jukebox, start a song list playing THEN open
another window in your Browser and use that window to surf
the net or whatever, while the music plays. I set it up on
my desktop as a favorite so all I have to do is click on it
and it opens automatically.
This is the great music from the past. No Gangster Rap or
other unintelligible garbage that has been foisted on the
public with an attempt to pass it off as music. There is
also Christmas Music, Movie Themes, Show Tunes and lots of
other categories.
This Jukebox plays any popular song from 1950 through 1982.
Hundreds if not thousands of hours went into creating it
Enjoy it, I do.

Re: The old Richland Library
I remember when they first opened the Library... not sure of
the date (probably late '40s, or early '50s). Does that mean
they're building a new Library?? We all remember having to go
through the "card files" seeking the book by title, or author.
I enjoy going to our local Library for information, reading the
Seattle Times paper, and checking out books of interest. Now
everything is simplified with the computer.
-Wally Erickson ('53) ~ I saw on "NBC News"; someone sent in an
email from Spokane saying "hey, we got lots of snow here in
the northwest". There's been so much news about the weather
in the northeast, mid-west, etc.. I had to smile on that
one, because we do have lots of snow here. We had a record
snow fall for the month of January... almost 4 feet. Yes,
we got lots of snow here. It's not usual seeing a pickup
truck with a snowplow on the front. Usually it's not a
problem getting from one place to another, but it was a
difficult time for a couple of days. The sun was out today,
and it was beautiful!!

Maren, I received an ad from GESA Credit Union in Richland,

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello Rex,
What you have received is what is called a "phishing" fraud
scam. I got one too; in fact, I personally, and we collectively
at the Sandstorm, receive several EACH DAY, purportedly from one
financial institution or another.
This is most certainly NOT -- repeat NOT -- from GESA;
legitimate financial institutions NEVER -- repeat NEVER --
contact their customers in this fashion. I have sent the
offending email to GESA to alert them that somebody is
"phishing" for their customers in hopes of hooking a sucker.
I did some research and have found that the scam is hosted by a
computer service in the Netherlands; the actual perpetrators of
the scam are most likely based in eastern Europe -- Russians are
particularly evil -- or China.
How, you ask, did you receive such a scam message when you are
not a GESA customer? Well, using what is called a "botnet" of
virus infected computers, the phishers sent perhaps as many as
10,000,000 emails to addresses around the world; they couldn't
possibly care if the recipient was or wasn't a GESA customer,
they cared only that MAYBE an email would "hit" a real GESA
customer (and then they hoped that the poor sucker would fall
for the scam and give them information which would allow them to
loot the customer's account).
Best advice: NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER respond to or act on such an
email unless -- and this is a VERY BIG unless -- you know what
you are doing (I do; I was in the computer racket for a loooong
time -- started out at NBofC back in the sixties).
Sincerely,
with best Bomber Cheers,
Re: Rolling Hills Chorus group which Missy Keeney Baker ('59)
belongs to. Chief Joseph Auditorium
As the show opened I was in for a big surprise. The show opened
with Mary Lou DeMeyer Gonza ('59) and her partner Steve Haberman
were the star group. Steve playing the piano and Mary Lou
singing. By the third song I realized that I was listening to
Mary Lou with the same voice she sang in in high school. Tears
came to my eyes with all the memories and her stage presence so
many years ago. Belting out songs of Irving Berlin bringing you
right into her heart. What an amazing woman. Mary Lou and her
partner have a sense of humor together which is something
Mary Lou had in high school and has not lost either in her
years. Whether or not you have known her, go see her, you will
be captured by her outstanding caring ways as a singer and funny
actress. Steve and Mary Lou appear in Richland at the Bookwalter
Winery on Wednesday evening. At this time they record and are on
109.7 FM the following night. Call the Bookwalter for times.
The Rolling Hills Chorus were at their best also singing many
Irving Berlin songs. Missy's group (The Radiations) sang with
their outstanding quality of voices (still baffles me how
quartets sing with no accompaniment) bringing their voices out
more singing Irving Berling songs. Did miss seeing them sing
their songs in funny costumes and antics. Micki Lund Anderson
('63) is also in the Radiations.
The theme of the night of course, as you can tell by my
entry, was "Irving Berlin". History of him was also given
throughout the show. What memories this all adds to my already
memories in Richland.
Update: Kaylene Henjum Livingston ('60) and her husband Herman
arrived safely back home in Finley on Wednesday. They are
working on building Herman's strength for the heart bypass
surgery he will have soon. Thanks for all the prayers and please
continue. Hopefully Kaylene will be putting in an entry soon
after she gets all the new schedule together.
Re: Good Friend Rufus Pederson ('48-RIP)
Rufe was a good friend and a fun companion during those high
school and early college years. His friendship extended into our
growing family days here in California. Our kids played with his
kids. My kids all remember him well. There were some great times
and some great stories to tell. He was an honorary member of our
high school gang, The Par-A-Dice Club, along with Rem Ryals,
Phil Raekes, Rex Davis, Mel Stratton, Royal West, Joe Wilson and
Gary Nield. (all '49ers)
The first play I ever went to was at WSC where Rufe was a lead
in The Glass Menagerie. He introduced me to stage shows and the
theater. Later we saw Mary Martin in South Pacific in Spokane.
One summer, Rem and I drove to Portland where Rufe was selling
Kirby vacuum cleaners door to door. Great fun that weekend.
Another memory finds Rem, Rufe and I parked along the Columbia
River in my '29 Chevy drinking Oly, playing the uke (he taught
me how), and singing the songs of yore. Lots of fun. We
harmonized and thought we were the greatest.
Rufe was a well known, respected director for a major TV network
in San Francisco for a good number of years. My oldest son
wanted to get into the business and Rufe was not only kind
enough to show him around his studio and gave him sage advice,
but also put him up for a couple of nights.
Another memory finds wife, Carol Tyner ('52), and I in San
Francisco. We found Rufe, bought a loaf of SF sourdough bread,
some imported cheeses and meats, a bottle of wine and sat along
the edge of the San Francisco wharf sharing dreams.
There's more, but I need to take a break. May God bless Rufe
Pederson!
Re: Irving Berlin
Keep singing those songs by Uncle Irving. The royalties on songs
are forever based on our proprietary laws, so whenever you sing
that song or use it in any manner, a royalty is due. If it is a
Bomber group, let me know and I will get Uncle Irving to give
you a discount. (Don't I wish he was my Uncle.)
I have a friend and her Father was a music writer in Hollywood,
mostly for movies but some as hits. His run writing music ran
from the 1930s to the 1960s, over forty years and she is still
collecting royalties, some $100,000 per year. Going back some
years when she realized there were royalties waiting to be
claimed to the tune, sorry for the bad pun, of $1.2 million.
In September 2005, the two U.S. Senators from Louisiana, Mary
Landrieu (a Democrat) and David Vitter (a Republican), jointly
introduced the Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief and Economic
Recovery Act in Congress, a bill that sought a total of $250
billion in federal funds to provide long-term relief and
assistance to the people of Louisiana AND THE GULF COAST. Of
course, the legislation didn't propose that the entire amount
be spent on New Orleans alone, or that the money literally be
distributed to New Orleans residents, so the amount listed per
New Orleans resident is neither honest nor accurate.
Re: Gesa and old library
The GESA scam came to me (I live in Richland and am a GESA
member) via telephone and sounded phony from the beginning. My
first clue was that it was a recording. My second clue was that
the voice pronounced it as "JESSA", not "GEESA." I hung up and
called GESA. They knew about the scam and congratulated me on
immediately realizing that it was false. The TV news that night
said that only one person had been taken in by the call and lost
money. Have not kept up with further developments.
The old library on Knight that is being torn down has not been
the library for many years. However, the "new" library at the
corner of Swift and Northgate that replaced it long ago also
is being either torn down or totally renovated and greatly
expanded. For the next several years, the library is being
housed in the old Rosauers grocery build (which has been many
things since then, such as Pasta Mama's and Shumate car
dealership).
Lots of questions about the library seem to be around. Here is
what was presented to my Kiwanis Club a couple of months ago...
They are rebuilding and expanding the library... it is not being
torn apart. They moved all of the books and materials last month
to the old Suzuki Building--next to "Payless-RiteAid" across
from Zip's and it will take about 18 months to redo the library.
They should be back and open in June of 2009 and better than
ever.. Here is the website for the renovation if you have other
Re: I did NOT forget
OK... maybe in the words of the King: "I forgot to remember to
forget". First, thanks to Phil Belcher ('51) for the Juke Box
site http://www.tropicalglen.com/ ... "*yeah baby you KNOW what
I like.." So anyway, Sunday is always hectic... as I tell people
it's Mumster day... the day I take my mom all the stuff she's
been making lists for all week... so then when I got back I had
been doing some work on a '49 Ford that's been standing in line
for a little over a year... since new years 2007... so I got
busy finishing up what I had been doing before I left and then
of course a short nap... short... spozed ta be short... so I
then realized I had forgot to send in my "day the music died"
note on Saturday... oh woe is me... so anyway... On February
3rd, 1959, I was just getting used to my new digs over at Jason
Lee and running with a new crowd, Davis ('65), Nussbaum ('65),
Beej ('65) (but I'd know him since... forever), Nalder ('65)
Heidlebaugh (soon to be '65), Adair ('65), Nevins ('65), Snow
('65) and a ton of others... I was missin' the Petersons ('64,
'65) and all the rock 'n' roll we had enjoyed... Jimi was
thinkin' about hitting Garfield, where Quincy had attended,
wonderin if anyone would ever groove on his licks, the
Fleetwoods had put out Mr. Blue and Kent and the Wailers with
Rockin' Robin' Roberts had cut Louie Louie and all their other
great hits and were the band to beat tho they wouldn't hit
American Bandstand for another 5 months... We were all
rockin'... Waylon had given up his seat and Jerry Allison and
Joe Bob were safe and sound on the ground... I wouldn't know
anything about Waylon till 1964 when he would cut the most
amazing version of "4 Strong Winds" I've ever heard and then I
would be hooked for life... then the news hit... Big news to the
kids... Huge news to me... the story would later be memorialized
in the song "Three Stars"... "gee we're gonna miss you everybody
sends their love... " The music would never be quite the same...
Buddy was doing a lot of experimentation with his music and
maybe I woulda lost interest... who knows... Ritchie had only
cut a couple of records and JP Richardson... well how far can
you go with gimmick records (maybe I should ask Sheb Wooley or
Ross Bagdasarian)... So anyway... they remain as we remember
them... they influenced all the greats to come and they molded
our lives in so many ways... so what else is there to say but
"gee we sure do miss ya... everybody sends their love... .. ."
Picnic scheduled too - It will be August 16th... Tom and Linda
Hemphill have graciously volunteered their home for our picnic.
We will send address info and maps later.
There are lots of positives for this change. We don't have to
pay a fee to the campground to use their site, Tom doesn't have
to take apart his cookstove/barbecue and haul it, the Hemphill
residence is easy to reach off the freeway, and for those beer
and wine drinkers, you can BYOB, which you can't have in the
Battleground Park.
So, there we have it. See you all in March...
Re: Library
Richland has had a "new" library for years. It's at the corner
of Swift and Goethals. I used to go to the old one as well.
Sometimes I'd walk down after high school for some books for a
project and then catch a ride home with my mom who worked in the
police department. What are they putting in the area once the
building comes down? I don't recognize many parts of Richland
any more. The last time I was there I went by the house I grew
up in, how sad. They took out the front lawn and put in concrete
for parking (the whole front lawn not just a small part of it).
How 'bout them Giants?
The old old library is being torn down and the newer library,
which resides at the corner of Swift and Northgate Boulevard,
is closed for repairs and expansion. I guess every library can
always use some more room. It worked fine for me for a number of
years. As they expand and fix it up the temporary library is on
Lee across from Zip's and next to Albertson's. The building is
next to the old Payless/Rite Aid store. This building has housed
a Rosauer's, Pasta Mamas, and Tim Bush Motor Sales.
Re: Richland library
Had a bad experience with the second Richland Library, not the
one we frequented 1950-53. My parents donated three of my
letterpress poetry books to the Richland Public Library circa
1987-88. They were in a special glass case with some other
collectible items, such as shrunken heads. On a visit from
California, where I was living then, and after my father's death
in 1988, I went down to the library with the intent to donate my
first collected poems, "Black Ash, Orange Fire" (1986) to the
library as well. I found that the books (and the case itself)
that my folks had donated, were missing, and not in the library
catalog. On further inquiry, I discovered the three books had
been sold at a library sale.
Those of you who know my temper can visualize Bill Witherup
going critical and about to melt down. My shoes melted the
asphalt on the way back to 1411 Townsend Court. I could barely
speak. My mother, always the one to damp down the fire, said,
"Now, son, I can't have you losing your temper before the
neighbors." Thus and so.
One can listen to the Bomber (aka Notre Dame and Wisconsin)
Surprisingly I found an Andre' Rieu (The world's greatest
orchestra leader) selection. It was a wonderful remembrance
after seeing him in his own "Homecoming" performance in
Maastricht, Netherlands. Not many orchestra leaders have their
own castle. He has earned one. If you ever have a chance to see
his performances or the "Homecoming" DVD, you'll understand.
Its comfortable working at the computer with headphones and
had one of the older girls to babysit when Mom and Dad were
such...now everyone is Rick or Richard, Bob or Robert, Bill or
William....but I have always remembered my friends the way they
were... Heidlebaugh is still Jimmy and to his chagrin, that's
I knew the library didn't face Goethals, but the back side of it
does. Was Northgate always a street or was it formed when they
built the library? I worked across the street from the library
on Goethals and often would walk over on my lunch time. It seems
it has a second level to it for offices and meeting rooms. I
took a course and for the final I had to have it proctored. I
had one of the librarians do it as I didn't have access to CBC
at the time and that was my only other option. The next year I
enrolled in a program at Weber State where I had done the course
for. I gave the instructor a hard time as the other students had
to take the course I had already completed but their final was
"open book". I didn't complain too loudly as I had "aced" the
course through correspondence.
Ran across your Vietnam Vet entry in Nov. 2007. I am moved. It
is a small world we live in. You briefly mention a Navy side
trip in April '69 when your ship joined Task Force 71. This was
in response to the shooting down of a radar plane off the coast
of North Korea. I was there too, on one of the four aircraft
carriers in front of you (the USS Hornet). You mention losing a
man overboard. I remember learning that a sailor had been lost
sometime during the day from a destroyer behind us, due mostly
to the combination of high speed and bouncy seas. My memory is
that things were too urgent for your ship to even turn back and
that visibility was not good. All these years I have often
wondered who he was.
For Sandstorm readers, in 1969 TF 71 was the largest navy task
force assembled (literally overnight) since the Korean War. The
homebound battleship New Jersey turned around in mid-Pacific to
join us. Thirty ships in all. My bet is that the downed radar
plane (an EC-121, a flying computer warehouse with a crew of
ten) was monitoring events connected to a flareup at the time on
the Chinese-Russian border. The story was that the downed plane
was over international waters. Probably true. No survivors. This
was a dicey week or so. Kissinger wrote about it in his "White
House Years", but some of his site-level info was clearly second
hand. I say a small world. Years later I ended up working in
Seattle alongside an ex-pilot of one of the four jets flying
intercept over all of us 24/7 during that period. Back in
Vietnam he later had gotten hit and ejected straight down toward
the ground barely a second before his plane exploded. A year in
hospital recovery, but by the time we met he still could outrun
me on the track. Not a particularly difficult thing to do. His
penalty was to have to listen to Bomber folklore.
Like Dennis, my tour in the Tonkin Gulf -- possibly in sight of
each other -- was fairly routine. To answer a question raised in
these Sandstorm entries, the reason some personal orders to
Vietnam got torn up was that at least by the late '60s, it was
decided only one inductee or volunteer from any one family had
to make that trip.
Re: The old library building
I was very small, perhaps about 4 or nearly so during my
earliest recollection of that building. My dad had a black '40
or '41 Ford sedan. We were passing the garage one day going
North and a car came out the big door and ran into the side of
our car pitching me into dad's lap. Details are not clear now,
but the one thing I do remember is it was a Studebaker that ran
into us. So all these years I been thinking it was a Studebaker
garage.
Down in Columbia park there is an old building on the river side
that I remembered as the Ford garage. That is where dad took the
car to get it fixed. That building was still there a couple of
years ago. Wow, was it really over 60 years ago?
Turned out Mathias has his office in Federal Way but is licensed
Re: Old Library
I remember well the old library that is being torn down. Spent a
lot of time in that building doing research for school projects
and passing time looking at book titles wondering how I would
ever have time to read them all.
I have some memories of the old, old library in the park. Small
concrete building with a huge dictionary by the front door. The
resident cat was usually asleep in the middle of it. I believe
that library was flooded in about 1950 or so. That was when they
built the new one, the one that is being torn down.
In my part of the world we will be getting a library again,
thanks to help from the U.S. taxpayer, the Gates foundation,
the Clinton-Bush foundation, and insurance that the city of
Pass Christian, MS had on the building. Right now we have a
double-wide trailer in the city park that was donated to us by
DuPont. That's better than most of the towns here on the Gulf
that were destroyed by Katrina. Our trailer library has a
resident cat, as did our pre-Katrina library. When I worked at
the Naval Oceanographic Office, that library (Mathew Fontain
Maury Oceanographic Library) had several resident cats. I'm not
sure what it is about cats and libraries.
Re: A real viral threat warning
Our weekly newsletter from Snopes just arrived, containing a
real warning about a Trojan virus threat. It has information
that the threat is so broad that spam blockers and virus
programs can't catch it all because the material is encrypted
and has too many sources. It's now up to individuals to delete
immediately these suspicious emails that are easily identifiable
by Subject Line and the body. The body contains a short message
and a link that uses an IP address rather than a domain.
Example: http://127.0.0.1 Do not click on any such link.
The Snopes article has a list of subject lines that are being
Re: Hockey Day in Canada
Here I am on a dark gray day parked in front of the TV with
a Molson's Canadian in my hand and watching the Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation's (CBC) Hockey Day in Canada...a
celebration of the game from the "Tot's on Ice" to three NHL
games...13 hours of hockey. It doesn't get any better than that.
What is so cool, sorry for the bad pun when talking about a
game played on ice, about this is that national TV goes small
and selects a rural town in Canada to base a lot of hockey
dignitaries and broadcast hockey all across the country. Today
it is Winkler, Manitoba where they celebrate Mennonite/Mexican
life, but that is another story. I love the little leaguers when
the come off the bench and onto the ice and immediately fall
down. Nothing bothers these little guys and gals and they are
back on their skates for another...sixty seconds. How about a
story of a couple from Chilliwack, British Columbia who have
attended over 600 straight hockey games of their local team.
Hockey in Canada is really a passion.
When I went to Linfield after Col-Hi I had a couple of Canadian
fraternity brothers who would travel to Portland, some 40 miles
in each direction, to play amateur hockey there. They talked me
into coming up one time and "strapping on the blades" and whilst
I had scatted quite a bit in the Tri-Cities, I was not at this
skill level. Not knowing the nuances of the game, I got smashed
into the boards a dozen times, was "high sticked" a dozen times
and "hooked" half a dozen times. So much so that I was thinking
I should put my skates on my bum rather than my feet. As
unbelievable as it was, I actually scored a goal, a nice goal at
that, and I was hooked, eh.
When I lived in Anchorage, Vancouver and Victoria I played in
the older guys leagues and in Anchorage we called it the "Pig
on Ice" league. Took us twenty minutes just to skate between the
Blue Lines...or so it seemed. My biggest thrill in hockey was
getting to drive the Zamboni, the machine that treats the ice
during a hockey game. What a blast.
Now Bombers that live in the Tri-Cities have the Western Hockey
League (WHL) Tri-City Americans hockey team and if you have not
been to one, go. It takes a couple of games to learn the rules
but it is fast and scoring comes even faster so you get used
to following the puck. Did you know that a "puck" it is a hard
rubber disk that they keep frozen for the games...slides easier,
faster and hurts more. I go to the Everett WHL games and used
to be a big Seattle Totem's/Thunderbirds fan. Portland has the
Winter Hawks. Hockey team names are cool, sorry for the bad pun
again, too. How about the Trail, B.C. Smoke Eaters and I can't
remember where the Hustle Kings are from. How about Patti Jones
Ahrens ('60) organizing a "Bomber Night" at an American's game"
She is great at that kind of thing and would make a hell of a
hockey coach in my estimation.
I love the game so much that I go to the Vancouver Canucks
games several times a year but if you have never been to a
hockey game, go to one or two and see how much fun it is.
Peewee's, Junior Minors, Senior Minors, WHL or NHL. It's all
good stuff. and remember the old saying, "I went to a fight one
night and a hockey game broke out." Why is it that a hockey
players smile is always the size of a puck...and without teeth?
Keep you stick on the ice.
I read Shirley Rae Drury Crume's ('51) entry regarding Dupus
Boomer. I remember those cartoons well. Dick Donnell and my dad
worked together in 1943-'44 so we always had a booklet around
the house all the time. Dad worked for DuPont in Kankakee, IL
and transferred to Richland in 1943, so yes, DuPont was the key
contractor in Richland at that time. I was always enamored with
their son's hot rod, a '32 Ford roadster, I think, and it had a
rumble seat that I got to ride in once. Dick and Zola lived on
the bank of the old dike and I used to go across their yard all
the time to go down to the river and play. What fun those days.
All the discussion about the Richland Library brought back the
memory that every summer during grade school, my mom would sign
up my sister, brother & me for the Richland Public Library
Summer Reading Program. You had to read a certain number of
books both fiction & nonfiction with some specific categories
like autobiography and write up small book reports. The
librarian checked off your list and at the end of the summer,
you got a certificate for completing the program. There are some
types of books that I would never have selected on my own which
I learned to appreciate. I can trace my love of reading and the
hundreds of books I have exchanged with others over the years
back to the Richland Librarians and their Summer Reading
Re: Richland Street Names
http://hanford.houses.tripod.com/streets.html
To: Web Master, Richland Street Names
My name is Harry Russell Hughes, normally called Russell because
I was junior. I graduated from Columbia High in 1953. My Father
Harry senor, who was an engineer, had a part in the naming of
Richland streets and they were given a list of southern military
officers to name the streets after. I never really knew his
sense of humor back then, but he inserted one different street
name in the list that was sent to the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers office in Spokane Washington for final approval. All
the other names were of the Army officers as instructed except
for this one. The name he chose was Wellsian Way, named after
the well field that supplied potable water for the Richland
Village at the time. The street naming engineers patiently
waited to see if this particular street name would be approved
and when the approved list of street names came back from
Spokane, there it was all official. I first found out about this
prank when a man contacted me years later to see if I had any
photographs of the engineers that worked in what I believe was
the 703 Building in the 700 Area. What he was looking for were
the names at the bottom of the picture that were missing. I
didn't have any of those pictures, much less the names. We
continued to talk about those good old days and at some point he
told me the story about the name Wellsian Way and how it came
to be. I later asked my mother Dorothy Viola Hughes about this
story and she confirmed the accuracy of it. It was more or less
a practical joke on the Corps that was successful to say the
least. To top it off, it didn't affect plutonium production
or give away any military secrets. I am not sure why the term
"southern military officers" was mentioned except that some of
the Corps officers having to do with the Manhattan Project were
from the south. Maybe that was their own version of a prank on
the Army at the time.
Re: All Bomber Luncheon - Richland
When Glen Rose ('58) and wife Carol arrived at 12:30 p.m. Glen
said, he didn't think many Bombers would be at the luncheon
because of the Caucasus in the Tri-Cities. Within in minutes we
were surprised with the Bombers who just kept coming. Charles
Kaiser ('63) was there having a cup of coffee and came to visit
for a minute before going off to one of the Caucuses. Mary Judd
Hinz ('60) raced in the door right at 1:00 p.m. excited about
being at one of the Caucuses.
The Bombers and spouses were so talkative that I didn't think I
would be able to get them to quiet down for introductions and
announcements. They did finally. **grin**
No photographer again, darn. Guess "Pappy" Swan ('59) and his
wife Jeanne must have slipped off to one of the meetings. Right
"Pappy"?
The following were in attendance: Mary Massey Horsey ('64) who
has been taking care of Larry Holloway ('64) arrived with Larry
looking very well after his heart surgery. Her care for him
shows. Lorin St. John ('55) and his wife Phyllis started a new
table which filled up quite fast. Betty Bell Norton ('51) did
her announcements for the seniors and what's to come at the
Community Center. Betty makes it so interesting you would want
to be at every event. Marie Ruppert Hartman ('63) and Barbara
Isakson Rau ('58) were in a discussion about grand children
and sports. Kaylene Henjum Livingston ('60) and husband Herm
attended to help them get over cabin fever before the next round
of doctor visits to help Herm be completely well. They both look
well after what they have been through. Fred Klute ('58) handed
me an obituary cut from the Tri-City Herald about my brother.
Those Bombers have gone, will not be forgotten. Derrith Persons
Dean ('60) always happy and carrying on with the discussion at
hand. Dona McCleary Belt ('54) was glad to have her husband
Larry Belt ('57) attend with her. Yeah Larry, hope you attend
more. Dianne Garrison ('66) joined her Bomber friend (I think it
was Mary Massey Horsey ('64). Dianne attended West High School,
Bremerton, WA.
There is always a table with people eating right in the area
where we have lunch when we get there. a couple of them Bombers.
I think I convinced them finally to wait a little later and join
us next month. If not I will write their names down so we all
know who they are.
Thank you for the suggestion of organizing a Bomber group at
the Ice Hockey games and me doing it. I have thought many times
about going to the games here. My son and granddaughter have
attended a couple of times when they visited here. My kids and
grand children use to attend in Tacoma. Ice Hockey is easy to
learn the game and follow. Do not like it when they knock each
others teeth out but have learned fighting is part of the game.
Doesn't take much to get those guys riled up.
I am not driving right now because of physical problems (Thanks
to Glen Rose ('58) and his wife Carol, they are getting me from
point A to B) so I would have to opt out. Have no idea if Carol
and Glen would enjoy the games. Maybe next season I can organize
one. If I do you will be expected to be here. Thank you Bill.
Re: Rufus Pederson ('47-RIP)
How sad to have Rufus go. I was at a Club 40 weekend about five
years ago having breakfast one morning. Many Bombers were coming
in about that time. Rufus (whom I didn't know) looked over at me
and asked to sit with me. As soon as he sat down and we learned
from each other that we both had lived in the Bay Area. We both
knew San Francisco, CA, which caused endless discussion from
there. Do not remember which TV channel he worked for but seems
like it was Channel 7 out of San Francisco. My favorite when I
lived there. Then I learned that his sister was Beth Pederson
('61). Had no idea she had an older brother. Even though we did
see each a couple of other at times at Club 40 it wasn't as easy
to sit down and talk. I will always remember the day that Rufus
brought sunshine into my life.
My sympathy to his family. I know you will miss his fun.
Re: Motorcycle trip
Then there was the two seniors back in 1950, or 1951, who had
just graduated and thought that riding their big noisy
motorcycles down the main hall and back at Columbia High would be
a real neat stunt. After all they had already graduated and what
could befall them now? They got the motorcycles into the hall at
the south end, started the engines and blasted down to the other
end, turned around and started back down the hall only to have
Mr. Haag the Vice Principal, who came out of the office upon
hearing the noise and stopped them. I understand that the two
boys had their diplomas pulled for a while until some restitution
was agreed upon. I don't remember what the restitution was, but
eventually they got their diplomas returned. Nobody else ever did
that kind of a stunt afterwards as far as I can remember.
Re: Richland High School Race Track
Then there was a driveway so you could drive all the way around
Columbia High School without having to go onto a city street.
The problem became serious when some students started using the
driveway as a race track. You know, wind the engine up and back
off the throttle and listen to the loud exhaust pipes sound off.
That interesting daily spectacle came to a quick end when the
school district blocked the driveway off in a couple places to
prevent a complete circumnavigation of the school building. The
driveway was actually a fire lane for the school. The driveway
was blocked sometime in 1952, or 1953 I think, because I had my
drivers license at the time and made the trip around the school
building myself a number of times in my 1929 Model "A" Ford
convertible coupe. You sat up straight, held your head up proudly
and smiled at the kids standing there who were watching the event
that didn't have a car in order to be able to do the same thing.
Re: Dupus Boomer books
In actuality, there were TWO Dupus Boomer books originally
published. The first was copyrighted in 1946 and titled "You
Asked For it." It was released as a first anniversary collection
of Dupus' first year in existence (first published in the
Villager on November 20, 1945). There were possibly at least
two printings since there was a "Red Cover" and a "Green Cover"
version (I have copies of both in my archives). BTW, the price
was 50 cents.
The second was copyrighted in 1948 and simply titled "Dupus
Boomer" and subtitled as cartoons from the Villager during 1947
and 1948.
Interestingly, CREHST Museum (in collaboration with Dick
Donnell's granddaughter) combined both books into a reprint
some years back and has it on sale at the museum Book Store
Re: Richland Street Names
To: Russ Hughes ('53)
Russ, you are correct concerning the story of Wellsian Way.
Clyde Berghdal related the same story during an interview at his
home. All of the streets at that time were named after Corp of
Engineer officers. The Southern Officer claim well I've got to
say it is only partially true. These officers lived and worked in
the 1800s and were from the North as well. The engineer picture
I might be able to help you with. Susan Baker Hoover ('64),
allowed a friend of mine to copy a photo of an engineering group
from her father's belongings. Perhaps this is what he was looking
for. Back to the naming issue. A question why, after all this
time hasn't something been named after Colonel Matthias? We have
Leslie Groves Park after the good General however he really
wasn't here that much other than to check on progress and to
offer encouragement to the work force. Colonel Matthias directed
the affairs of Hanford and traveled extensively to Chicago,
Oak Ridge, New York, parts of Florida conferring with the top
scientists and engineers at that time. He knew of Los Alamos and
corresponded with Oppenheimer but to my knowledge never traveled
to the Hill during the war. Of course he really wasn't attracted
to pursuing notoriety or using his office for special favors.
He stood in line like everybody else. But he was instrumental in
getting the job done. Anyway I'm sure Burt Pierard ('59) can fill
in any missing details on the names. I'm always forgetting
something.
Well Don, as usual, you've nailed all the historical facts and
there is not much, if anything, I can add. We go through this
discussion (on the Sandstorm) every few years and I can reaffirm
that all the original (WWII) streets were named after Corps of
Engineer people, presumably officers. Some people have trouble
accepting this because they don't know George Washington was once
a surveyor in the Corps. Maren has posted a Feb. 25, 1945 memo
from Paul Nissen (DuPont Public Relations guy and who became the
first editor of the Villager the next month) that includes all
the bios of the Engineers he could find.
As an aside, the three main N-S arterials (Goethals, Stevens &
Thayer) were all "Drives" (except for the special designation of
Geo. Wash. Way) and the three main E-W arterials (Williams, Swift
& Lee) were all "Boulevards." All street names were roughly
"alphabetical" from south to north and east to west.
When this discussion last came up, I raised the question about
Wellsian Way (it still shows as an unnamed dirt road on my
1949 map) and several Bombers responded that the dirt road was
originally just an access road to the main city water supply
wells. I don't know when the road was paved and officially named,
but the name explanation made sense to me.
As to your mention of the lack of attention to Col. Matthias, I
have shared that concern for many years. In actuality, Groves had
very little to do with the construction and management of the
Project and Richland Village - he turned it all over to Matthias.
I am trying to get the old Lunchroom at B Reactor named the "Col.
Matthias Room" and stock it with relics and memorabilia from the
Project.
Re: Old Richland Library
I had been to the library many times, but never stepped foot
through the door. The lawn is the closest I was to the inside.
Isn't that right Deedee?
Shame on both of us. Well! Maybe she didn't tell her folks quite
what I did. It took me time to learn that things DO come back to
bite you...! I paid dearly. I flittered away a great educational
experience and lost time with my Mother. Little did I know
neither one would not last much longer.
You know that paybacks are the pits. I have four daughters and
they were each 2 years apart. There was a sign that I had on my
refrigerator, and it was pointed to frequently, by me. It read:
"Leave home while you are a teenager & still know everything.'
I believe that I bought that sign more for myself as a reminder
of how I seemed to know everything about life at 16. I STILL
don't know half of what I should about life, and I am 61!
After hearing all of the great things about the old Library,
I am truly sorry that I never made it inside. Another one of
those foolish choices made in the name of fun.
Re: 1953 Senior Class Picnic
When I graduated in 1953 the senior class always had a picnic at
Sacajawea Park. The problems began when some students started
driving their own cars to the park. I understand that there were
a few incidents with the law for improper driving and the School
District became concerned about their liability. The result was
that any senior attending the picnic now had to ride to the park
on a school bus, or not attend the event. That didn't seem quite
right to a few of us seniors and so we hatched a plan to be sort
of at the picnic and not have to ride the school bus. Three of
us had outboard boats moored at my boat dock on the river and so
we loaded our food and the gas onto the boats well before school
started on the day of the scheduled picnic. The legal picnic
seniors were to board the busses at 1:30 PM and ride to the
park. Those seniors who were not going to the picnic at the park
on the school buses were to be dismissed at 2:30 PM to go home.
At 2:30 PM, Mr. Edgar Haag, the vice principal, came to the auto
shop where we were still in class and dismissed the group of us.
We immediately headed for the boats on the river in our cars and
took off for Sacajawea Park. We arrived shortly after the school
busses had arrived.
We were careful to not partake of any of the official picnics
food or drink. We more or less stayed away from the official
picnic tables and so on. We were careful to avoid any connection
with the official picnic. Of course the whole park was available
to any of the public which included ourselves which numbered
five I think. We had a lot of fun, we associated with the other
students and of course we went out in our boats and showed off
our fancy smart aleck boating skills. At the same time we were
careful to avoid allowing any of the official picnic students on
board the boats. In short we had a ball.
Then came the following Monday back at school. Each of us were
promptly called over the PA system to report to the school
office right now. It looked like we could be in for a little
trouble. We were to be called in to Principal Macintosh's
office, and be grilled prior to being beheaded, or something
equally morbid. The first student went in and it seemed like
a long time under the third degree. Then the second student
entered the office to endure his third degree. The vice
Principal Edgar Haag was summoned to provide some information,
and we waited. Maybe a half an hour had passed by now. Shortly
Mr. Haag came out of the office and stood there with his hands
on his hips and looked at us. We were free to leave he said.
It seems that all of our planning was right on the ball.
Technically we did not attend the picnic. We all had been
dismissed from school that day by Mr. Haag. We were free to go
home we had been told by Mr. Haag. The only fly in the ointment
was that we were supposed to have gone home first. Our defense
was that hardly anyone ever went directly home from school,
which was true. We also stayed away from the official picnic in
a physical sense. We had our own food and didn't consume any of
the school's food, or beverages. We had abided to all the rules
set forth. The powers that be at school never considered that
they had a Columbia High School navy contingent to deal with.
They only thought about land bound motor vehicles of which there
were plenty among the student body. Mr. Haag later told me that
while he deplored what we did, that he had some admiration of
our planning for all contingencies and our ability to stick with
the plan. Of course he also said that that wouldn't happen again
as the rules would be changed to accommodate this sort of a
situation. Mr. Haag was an honest fair straight shooter and we
all respected his ability to deal daily with a bunch of smart
aleck students. I think he remembered when he was a teenager
himself.
The students who owned the boats if my memory serves me
correctly were myself Russ Hughes, Carol Julian and Russ
Armstrong, all Class of 1953. Russ Armstrong's boat was
constructed in the schools wood shop.
I lift up prayers for your full recovery and ask that you do the
same for my brother Clif ('61). His stage II small cell Lymphoma
has progressed to stage III and they are sending him through
more concentrated treatment at UCSF. His beautiful curly white
hair is gone and being a very fastidious guy, I know he can
hardly wait to get it back. He continues to be a caring, sweet
man.
Also prayers for Mike's ('60) sister Kathy Rice Veverka ('58).
She has been in quite a battle with the big c. 1st breast
cancer, then lung cancer and now brain cancer. I cannot tell you
what a wonderful attitude she has had through countless chemo's
and now radiation, and also how deeply I respect her as a
person. Through the years, I have watched her big heart reach
out and touch many in Richland. Helping to start an abused
women's shelter in Richland, planning many JA Jones parties and
raising 3 very wonderful girls, she just is a "people" person.
She needs your "WINGS" right now and your prayers.
It seems as if I cannot read a daily Sandstorm without hearing
of some loss. In my brother's class of '61, I offer my
condolences to Jim Andersen's ('61-RIP) family and to Bill
Coates' ('63-RIP) family. I have known Bill since 4th grade at
Spalding Elementary when we moved to Richland. He and Freddie
Schafer were good friends in those early years. Where Bill was a
sweet man, Freddie was a kick-in the-pants guy, with a heart of
gold. And there is not a day that goes by that I do not think of
Freddie Schafer ('63-RIP) and Ann Engel Schafer ('63) and Paul
Hirst ('63-RIP) and Mary Ann Vosse Hirst ('63)) -- all of them
such terrific people. It always amazes me that there was so much
love in the class of '63 that many of the members married each
other. I look forward to our 45th reunion in September, where we
can give lots of hugs to all those special people we grew up
with.
Re: Getting up the courage
Yes yes... the Cole sisters beat me again... I totally spaced
Vicki's ('66) birthday and Ms Spudnut Val Ghirardo's ('72), as
well... so... I been bad and I guess I'll pay for it next time
I see those two Bomber Babes... But I do have a good excuse...
kinda... ya see... I've been taking a new turn in my life and
it has become very time consuming to say the least... We have
a big problem in Clark County, Nevada... it has become quite
fashionable for young lawyers with virtually no experience
to run for Judge... it's not all their fault... the job pays
far less than a good, experienced lawyer can make in private
practice... but it is pretty good pay for someone just entering
the market... We have very few experienced trial lawyers on the
bench for that reason... it is unusual for an experienced lawyer
to give up his practice and spend an absolute fortune to run a
good campaign... well, here I am... almost 62 and two of the
judges decided to retire... I figured maybe I'd run for one of
those spots... I checked it all out and it turns out that all
26 of our regular (not family court) Judge races are now done
at the same time (they were once staggered)... that meant if I
didn't run now I'd be 68 next time they ran... dang! So... ok...
I anguished for a while and then said... "I'll do it" Ahhh but
not so simple... Our "worst" Judge was removed from the bench
last year... the case is still pending... Our second worst judge
is running again... all of a sudden I was overcome with little
"birds" twittering in my ear... the little birds it seems were
sent out by other "black robes"... so now I'm running... against
the worst judge (second worst if you count the removed judge)...
one would think it would be easy... she is not bright and not
well liked... should be a snap... right? Well, apparently
she has "juice" with someone... also, many of the prominent
attorneys who would normally be listed as members of my
committee have high profile cases in her court... soooooo...
money yes... names no... talk about fear... I find it difficult
to believe that a sitting judge would retaliate against
attorneys and their clients over the use of a name... Welcome to
the world of politics, Rivers... But there is good news... My
campaign is using... BOMBER colors!... so... if one of my signs
happens to blow into your yard during our windy season...
(now)... please forgive me... it will look like this
We've had a few days of paralyzing snow and frozen snow with
at both churches now, and as we aren't expecting any more snow
in the next few weeks, and we don't live where the Ohio does
Hello All,
I am happily esconced in a friend's home house-sitting for 10
days and taking on my duties as a planning council member for
Women of Wisdom (WOW). Many of you have probably been on this
type of planning council.. a general go-for position done with
great love and much cooperation from many people who like and
respect one another from associations of many years.
I am tired and also energized.
My sister, Carol ('73), has been helping me by sending me things
from Richland when needed. She just opened a letter from the
Tri-City Herald finally!! inviting me to be a participant in a
citizens discussion panel about safety in Richland schools. I
applied the first day the opportunity arose. I felt that having
been such a high academic achiever and contributing leader as a
high school student in Richland and then with a past of working
as an international stewardess and then for Seattle Schools for
many years that I might have a reasonable chance to be selected.
Time passed and no invitation. With Snoqualmie Pass closed and
the conference coming up, I remained in Seattle to continue with
job applications as well as drink in museums and art galleries
and my loved dance classes. I took the training class to be a
voter poll judge and will be here in Seattle working rather in
Richland discussing what can be done to keep our schools safe..
Please remember to vote this next week.. it's important. I am
here longer and will not be able to contribute on this panel.
Weather here has been mixed.. some wonderful sun and some cold
grey rain. I love it all.
I am taking bookings for house-sitting in Seattle while I get
professionally employed. I have references and I do gardening.
Donna Fredette ('65), I got an email from you to meet and
responded but didn't hear back. Did the internet eat our
correspondence?
Good night all, and thank you for keeping the Bomber spirit
alive.
Sincerely,
It is with deep sorrow that I tell you that a wonderful friend
of mine, Jeannine Houston Willis ('54) died Friday [215]. She
had been admitted to Kadlec Medical Center with severe breathing
problems. On Thursday she had a massive stroke and died Friday.
Jeannine and I became close friends after she and her husband,
Paul, moved back to Richland several years ago. Our husbands
became fast friends. Paul died in late 2001 and my husband,
Bill, in 2002. Jeannine and I were a great support for each
other; and enjoyed each other's company. Praise God, she is out
of pain, and in a much better place. The death notice was in
today's (Sunday) Tri-City Herald. Because of tomorrow being a
holiday, the arrangements for a Memorial service is held off
until Tuesday. Tentatively it is scheduled for 10:30 am,
Saturday, at Bethel Church on Keene Rd.
I tried sending Helen Cross Kirk ('62) a picture of Bill Coates
('63-RIP), but her email was rejected. Here is the picture that
I scanned from my wife's 1960 Chief Jo annual. She wanted a
younger picture of Bill.
Re: David Rivers ('65) running for the Bench
To: Ed Quigley ('62) and David Rivers ('65)
I have a backpacking buddy who was superior court judge
for about 15 years. About himself, he always repeated this
depreciating humor... "Well, whenever any lawyer looses favor
with the bar, they just get together and boot him/her out by
electing them to the bench. My being here only means that I
must have really p...... off too many of my colleagues."
Humm, I thought that interesting. And I would think to myself,
"is that why there are so many woman judges?"
Anyway, it's always great to have some humor about... and if you
don't get elected you can always say that your peer group still
likes you!
You win both ways. Go for it.
Re: The '60s, the music, the movie ...
If you were there for the '60s, if you know the Beatles, if you
want to see a fine piece of independent film -- you have GOT to
watch "Across the Universe".
I don't buy many DVDs as keepers, but I watched this rental
tonight, and am going to order a copy for purchase
