Re: BETSY'S SKI CHAMPIONSHIPS
Tri-City Herald Sunday, February 16, 1958 Page 12
Young Tri-City skiers put their six weeks of learning on display
yesterday at Spout Springs and judges gave them all a "well
done."
It was almost the final day of the Tri-City Herald-YMCA Ski
School which has attracted 125 novice skiers from the Tri-
Cities.
Technically the school ended with Saturday's races but because
of demand, Dick Ortmeyer, general secretary of the "Y" said the
ski buses will run one more week. Two buses are engaged and
tickets may be purchased by following the regular procedure as
in the past.
About 100 skiers took place in Saturday's contests, ending with
a slalom.
Winners in the advance group were: 1. Gary Dukelow, Pasco: 2.
Glenn Dukelow, Pasco; 3. Cliff Cunningham ('62), Richland.
Intermediate-1. Ted Johnson, Richland; 2. James Hurt, Richland;
3. Terry Smith, Richland.
Beginners-1. Bob Mathis ('63), Richland; 2. Betsy Fox ('63),
Richland; 3. James Hodgson ('64), Richland.
A large number of parents was on hand for the events run, in
windy conditions with a light snow falling during part of the
contest.
"It has been a very successful school," Ortmeyer said last
night. "Sixty per cent of these youngsters had never been on
skis before." Now they can come down a slope, snow plow and
keep their speed under control.
"Give them another year and they'll handle any of the slopes in
the ski area regardless of slope. Our instruction has been
excellent."
