My gosh…it's impossible to keep up with all the health problems
we Bombers are experiencing!

To: Kay MITCHELL Coates ('52)

I'm so sorry about Dick having the added burden of dialysis and
the strain it puts on you.

To: Diane AVEDOVECH ('56)

I contacted M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX (via
email) and received an immediate reply that my daughter probably
would not be a candidate for their treatments. Bummer. We are at
our wits end to find something that will prolong her life, yet
let her be comfortable. Contrast MRI of the gastro-intestinal
region, yesterday. Another test this coming Sunday, looking for a
pinched nerve which could be causing her extreme headaches. The
good news is: brain tumor and stroke were eliminated Monday the
21st. She and Bobby are grandparents as of August 30th and they
have so much to live for.

To: Maggie GILSTRAP O'Hara ('74)

Is it any particular Protein powder? I checked at Safeway (I was
there anyway) and a Health Store, but there are choices. If you
have more information, please let me know.

Keeping all of you... too many to mention... in prayer and
positive thought. And wishing all a Better New Year.

Re: Original names for the Desert Inn & Ernie's Typewriter & Printing

The Original name for the Desert Inn was the Transient Quarters
which functioned as you described but I have no knowledge of it
being limited to "Gentlemen." My Dad stayed there for one night
in early January, 1944 (I have his receipt in my files somewhere
- I believe it was about $3.00 for the night).

The jail facility you refer to was much more than that. It was
the Central Security Patrol Headquarters before it became Ernie's
and the building was apparently torn down to make room for the
Red Lion Parking Lot (I don't know this for fact, just assuming).
As an aside, V. E. "Van" Van Dusen, father of Claris ('48) and
Van, Jr. ('52), ran a Radio & Electronics Repair Shop in Ernie's
basement for a number of years in the '40s & maybe early '50s.

Bomber Cheers,

Yes, the Hanford House was once the Desert Inn, located next door
to my dad's shop Ernie's Printing, which was once the Richland
City Jail. Yes, as one of Ernie's children, I could tell you
some interesting tales about the basement of the City Jail, the
graffitti on the walls, and so forth.

However the Hanford House (once the Desert Inn, and now the Red
Lion) was NEVER the Rivershore Inn. The Rivershore was a few
blocks south right on the water and is now called the Shilo.

My parents, Ernie and Inez de la Bretonne, sold the property
(Ernie's Printing) on the corner of GWWay and Knight street --
across from the old Post Office -- to the Hanford House to
be used as part of their parking lot. Not only was there an
interesting basement in the building (City Jail), there was
an apartment above the "shop" (as we called it) where my
grandparents lived for a few months, maybe a year, when my
grandfather was between assignments as a minister.

When my Dad sold the property to the Hanford House, he moved
his business near the Uptown on the corner of Williams and
Jadwin. Later he sold the business to his long time employee
and shop manager, Dick McLean. The business is now closed.(Dad
also bought the first business property sold by the government
which was the old Ganzel Building -- barbershop and all --, I
believe, in 1958). Dad died in 2006. Mom is still living.

Re: Dating a ball point pen

The date 1952 for the first ballpoint pen is surely accurate.
When I was in second grade ('51-'52) in Lewis and Clark grade
school, I faced with trepidation my possible advancement to third
grade. We would be using ink pens for the first time, and being
a lefty, I had been advised that I would forever be at risk of
smearing my well-formed letters across the page. Academic life
would not be easy. But, there it was on the market in the nick of
time, the marvelous ball point pen, just as I entered the third
grade in 1952.

Re: David RIVERS ('65) & Parentheses

One time, long ago, I tried to figure out where your parentheses
open and close, only to find it an exercise in futility. Ever
since then, I just read with the flow - I'm a quick learner.
Sometimes a quick scan actually winds up making more sense than
a careful read - sort of like Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home
Companion; various seemingly unrelated anecdotal threads all come
together as a cohesive whole at the end of the program. However,
I know your entries are usually loaded with obscure, "you-had-to-
be-there" references. Since I am casually acquainted with some of
your subjects I occasionally slow down to see if I can pick up
on some of it. Not often, though - that would drive me mad! Re:
Mullers Linda REINING ('64), was Steve about your age, or maybe
a little younger? I may have played chess with him occasionally,
know he was smart. I do remember I played chess a lot with
someone named Chuck near the south end of Elm. You know I'm
praying for you every time the Lord brings you to my mind, which
has been almost daily. At the same time I pray for my cousin
Carol (your age, also in chemo) and Bonnie STEEBER Frasca ('57).

Regards, ecb3, from cold central VA (down to 17 tonight) where
the record-breaking 18-24" of snow ten days ago is mostly out of
the way, but the deeper drifts and larger plowed piles are still
significant.

Re: licorice tea

I LOVE black licorice (never have liked the red... too sweet),
so I will look for licorice tea... we don't have a Safeway, but
Von's carries some Safeway products... am wondering if it's made
by Celestial Seasonings???? they have a lot of healthy teas. also
like Constant Comment... I buy their cinnamon tea... love that...
I add Jolly Rancher cinnamon candies to it... gives it more
cinnamon flavor. *grin* Thanks for the thoughts and prayers...
they do help... and, yes, I am very stoked about what the doctor
had to say about my cancer... 2010 will definitely be a better
year! *grin*

To: Maggie GILSTRAP O'Hara ('74)
Re: cancer advice

Thanks for your input... really makes a lot of sense and "keeping
your head in the game" is half the battle... IF you don't stay
positive, you cannot get through all this stuff! I am not going
to be "heroic"... I will admit that I did get "weepy" during the
chemo... just so hard on the body and that blasted nausea was
horrible, but I had/have a great support in my daughters and
they'd make up jokes and we'd end up laughing, instead of crying,
so keeping positive is the best medicine! as for eating... it is
hard to do when you have NO appetite and everything you eat makes
you nauseous, BUT I do understand that eating is important... my
daughter would make me creamy potato soup and instant oatmeal...
I also ate puddings... was about the only things I could keep
down and swallow without lots of difficulty. As for cooking in
the cast iron skillet... excellent idea... I remember my gram
always cooked with cast iron skillets and pots and pans... in
fact, I have her cast iron pancake griddle... makes the best
pancakes. *grin* as for powdered protein... not sure I'll try
that... I did find protein drinks at Target that have 21 grams of
protein per can, so I bought 4 cans and they don't taste that
bad... a bit "chalky", but I can handle that... I bought the
cookies and cream flavor... the only other choice was vanilla and
I figured that one would definitely be too "chalky". *grin*
thanks, again, for the advice. and, I agree about the citrus
drinks... they are just too acidic and hurt my mouth and
throat... especially when my mouth is covered in sores from the
chemo. I am very glad to hear that your husband beat his cancer
and is still here! woohoo *grin*

Re: FW: FW: FW

Why can't I take instruction?????? Why do I hafta cross if it
says Don't? If Mommy Dearest says I hafta read Ivanho and Tom
Sawyer one summer why have I never read either (tho I could once
quote the first page of Tom Sawyer)... Gee I did have something
to say before I noticed Maren's ('63-'64) note in yesterday's
Sandstorm... Now where was I before I got distracted... it'll
come to me if I keep hitting keys I'm sure... Thanks for the nice
notes on Boxing day... I saw a car yesterday with "BOXING" for a
license plate... made me wanna just run over and tell the guy I
knew what it meant... up till a few days ago I thought it was the
days when Davis ('65), Bo Belinsky and I used to go over to the
Mandalay and watch guys beat the crap outa each other... silly me
silly me... I can't believe it is the New Year already... as you
read this I'll be in the lil' Milner Coupe sans Man-a-fre heading
for Stateline (or Primm as it is now called)... the border
between California and Nevada with the Donnut boyz for another
freezing get together in a Valley at the beginning (or the end?)
of the Mojave filled with nothing in this world but wind... may
well have been the first organic wind tunnel for car makers...
I'm sitting here as I write this trying to keep a huge box of
chocolate covered pretzels from spilling as I try and nibble on
a few... got them from one of the girls for Christmas and didn't
realize it was a bulk package till I removed some of the plastic
wrap and they kinda fell all over... In my younger days I would
have felt obliged to eat as many as possible so they wouldn't get
stale... but this year I think I'll avoid the stomach ache and
put them in a big bag... this year will be the best ever... I
have high hopes just like the rest of you (Earl ('63)... I am
avoiding any semblance of paragraphing just for you!)... I mean
it's gotta cool ring to it... "2010"... didn't they make a 2001
sequel for 2010? As I recall it was about as good as the sequel
to American Graffitti (ok... to be honest, I couldn't bring
myself to watch it but I have it... AG not 2010)... I think it
was Soilant Green where Charleton Heston walked by a theater and
it showed that before things went bad "Rocky X" was playing...
always got a kick outa that... I'm hoping more than anything
that all my friends out there who have been experiencing health
difficulties with recover and be well... I love you all and can't
wait to get to Ms. HOFF's ('64) Big Event in June (I know she has
lots of help... but give credit where credit is due... besides...
I always love being kissed by her but the idea of getting kissed
by John ('62) or Roy ('63) just doesn't do a thing for me... )...
So from all of me, to all of you... HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Subject: Thank you Ally

Hi, I did get in my sophomore year at Col-Hi, played in the band
and was totally homesick when we moved to Alaska in 1965. I
guess coming from the unique city of Richland makes a special
impression on you when growing up. I have met a few Bombers since
I have been in Alaska. Vickie ANDERSEN Simmons ('67) is there and
of course Jackie. I am so grateful for the effort and results
that we Bombers seem to manage on a regular basis.

Anyway, let me thank you for everything you do. I still consider
myself a Bomber, even after all these years. I am going to beat
this demon and any help from my fellow Bombers is graciously
appreciated. My loving wife, Kelly, does the finances and is
aware that this is going to get expensive. We are doing OK so
far, but, the funds are getting shorter as time goes on.

My Heartfelt Thanks to you and all the Bombers out there in
cyberland.

May God Bless you all,
-Gene BURRILL ('67wb)
