Re: Patrol Headquarters
When we moved here in 1947 I think the patrol Headquarters were
in a small stone (?) building across from what is now the Federal
Building in the park. They later moved to a building (one story)
west of The Mart. I remember this one well since I spent several
hours in it one morning. I believe that it was probably a Friday
or Saturday night. I had double dated with another couple and
after the Drive In was over we were on our way to the open air
dance at West Richland when two army guys on a bike hit the
gravel and then spun into our car. I was in the back seat with
Phyllis MAJOR ('51) and we looked up in time to see the guys
flying through the air. As a result the Patrol took the four of
us to Headquarters and we were there until after 3:30am. A rude
awaking to be sure.
Re: Ernie's typewriter building
In 1958 I was caught in a lay off with G.E. and went to work for
an electrical contracting firm owned by Lionel Stewart and Dick
Schultz. It was called S&S and we did a ton of remodel work since
the government had just sold the town to the public and everyone
was wanting to remodel their homes. S&S rented the basement from
Ernie for their shop. A heating salesman rented the upper story
for he and his wife. If memory serves me correctly his name was
Bob Hillman.
I spent 38 years at Hanford before going to BPA and when I see
the photos that Don Sorenson puts in I can remember many of the
people, not by name always, but I know that I worked with them.
I was in many photos when I worked at PRTR and then later the
Sodium Loop in the basement of 324. Its rather sad to drive by
the 300 area where I worked for so many years and see that nearly
everything is torn down. I spent two years on general maintenance
in the main 300 area and worked in all of the buildings. It was a
good time in my life and I remember those years fondly.
Happy New Year to all of the Bombers.

Patti, the Home Furnishings department was in the center of the
store, on the main floor, with notions and yardage, which we
called Piece Goods. I started in '56, a little before you, and
by the time Mel Swain had made me a manager, in 1957, The home
furnishings were my first management assignment. Prior to that,
I made $.75 cents an hour. By the time you graduated from
high school, I had been named Manager of the Lewiston, Idaho
C.C. Anderson's, and that first year made a whopping $6,000 plus,
plus mind you, an unbelievable bonus of $3,000, based on sales
and profit gains. I can't tell you where all of that money
went... Edna and I just spent it, I'm sure. But, Allied Stores
fixed that problem... they raised my goals for the next year so
that I made very little bonus... and things returned to normal...
not a dime to waste.

This cookout was at the "Junior Rider's Club. I'm the kid
standing left center with the plate (late to respond because I
had to verify with sister Suzi ('58) - couldn't believe we were
ever that young!!)
I think that is John Philips serving up the chow. He started the
Club which was located behind the old sewer plant. The fenced
in pasture encompassed most of what is now the golf course and
Columbia Point. At one time there were 50 - 75 members.
Second from the right is my mother, Dorothy Seeburger (RIP) and
fourth from the right in the black cowboy hat looks like Verl
GOODWIN ('54). The others are lost somewhere in the fog of time...

The reason NASA worked so hard on developing a non-leaking zero-
gravity ball point pen is that they didn't want the additional
weight of three (or more) pencil sharpeners in the Apollo
capsules or the LEM.
Re: The Desert Inn
It was still the Desert Inn when my step-father worked there in
the early '50s. The dike was built following the flood and prior
to the building of McNary Dam. The reason for the name change was
some "outfit" in Las Vegas thought they had a better claim to the
name.

this is one of the operations crews from one of the 100 areas.

Re: Oops - I screwed up the caption note for Pic # 2
http://alumnisandstorm.com/htm2010/Xtra/Pie/100103-00.htm
I messed up when I said that Ernie's became part of The Hanford
House parking lot in 1969 (obviously, that couldn't be true since
the circa 1993 Pic still shows it there!!!!). It is true that The
Desert Inn closed & was demolished in 1968 and The Hanford House
was built in 1969, but they apparently did not acquire the
parking are a at that time (see attached 1969 Pic).
http://AlumniSandstorm.com/htm2010/Xtra/Pie/100104_Slide29.jpg
I am now thinking that the parking area was added when The Red
Lion purchased The Hanford House (unknown year but if this is
the case, it was obviously after 1993). Sorry about my mistake.
Bomber Cheers -

Re: Pens & Ink
Brad, you commented on NASA spending several million dollars
developing a pen that would write in zero gravity, while the
Russians used pencils. I learned about this in 1989 and I have
one of those pens. I got it at the US Space & Rocket Center in
Huntsville, AL. I was there for two weeks training a group of
scuba divers to be NAUI Instructors. We did most of our in-water
training in the huge tanks where the astronauts would learn how
to use a self-contained life support system and do projects in a
weightless environment. It was an great experience for me.

Re: Be still my beating heart
Ok... enough time has passed that it is ok to tell all... today's
birthday girl is madly in love with me... I mean... totally...
talk about having the hots... poor thing... I've tried to let her
down easy but it just doesn't do any good... I think I know how
Jody Foster must feel... it is a burden to say the least... how
do you help such a lovely misguided child... I know what you are
thinking... how does he know she's so hot for him... ah come on
now... it's sooooooooooo obvious... I mean how does a kid let a
girl know he's mad for her? he ignores her of course... the more
he ignores... the more she knows... or at least her friends
know... this Bomber-babe will blast me with emails... then...
nothing... that's when I know... when she disappears... she is
beating herself up for chasing me... so for months and months...
not a word... well she can't fool me... no way no how... but I
love you too, girl... course you know that... so go ahead and pay
all kinds of attention to your little dog, Toto... but I know...
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Paula Jill LYONS ('64) on the 4th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: dikes
yes Earl, the dike was there even when I was young and playing
with ants and picking lilacs behind my dad's shop, Ernie's
Typewriter Exchange.( that was the first shop name.) I had a
sling shot and used to shoot stones over the dike, at least I
thought so...........
Gawd, these pictures have stirred up a lot. the very first shop
was in the half Quonset hut beside the house/jail, etc. Paul's
was a Hobby Shop and I used to go over and buy polished rocks.
Years later when we were in the jail building, the earth behind
it started to cave in. Workers came and dug it up. There were
outside steps down to the jail cell in the basement. I found
an old skeleton key in the dirt while it was all dug up. I'm
starting to feel like that little kid as I write this..... then
they filled it all in again. I can picture every inch of the
inside of that shop. I spent a lot of time there. Mom worked
there all day, so I spent sick days out of school on a quilt in
the back a lot. If I felt better later in the day I would put
stamps on envelopes for 10 for a penny! then sometimes I could go
over to the dime store and buy, maybe a paddle with a little ball
stuck to it by a rubber band... or.... a sling shot! Yeah!! Also
drank my first coke while hanging out there. Sometime I got to
walk to the gas station next door to buy some. Frosty cold 3 oz
glass bottles.
Paula, just wondering why all of us kids didn't know each other
as kids. I heard the name Paul Beardsley all my life as a friend
of Dad's, but never knew any of you until Jr. Hi when Nancy and I
became friends. I don't know if I ever even know you all existed
before that. I miss our Dads too...
Ok that's enough. I'll just be reading for a while now.
Happy New Year to all you Bombers out there.

Since we all had fun recognizing old faces, let's try places.
Now many of these will be pretty easy but they should evoke
