Re: Pencil Sharpeners
The basic reason for not using pencil sharpeners in the
spacecraft was: "What do you do with the wood shavings and lead
dust?" You get that no matter what type of sharpener used. Oh you
young kids!
Re: Where are you
I'm glad everyone recognized the south-end beginning of town. As
for the latest batch, Don, I'm surprised you didn't know where
this building is, it is clearly marked. The parade pictures are
on GWWay just south of the Williams intersection. And is that
jeep towing River's '08 fire truck?

Re: Security Patrol Headquarters - continuing
http://AlumniSandstorm.com/htm2010/Xtra/Pie/100106-Slide32.jpg
At least 2 people have mentioned remembering the SP Headquarters
in the red brick Tract House located in the middle of what is
now the John Dam Plaza. Applying my usual standard of trusting
memories (at least 2 people remember something the exact same way
or nearly so) aroused my curiosity and I started looking for some
way to confirm their memories. I knew that Lt. Col. Matthias had
originally stayed in that house (the A. B. Murray home) for a
short time when he first came to town but didn't know of any
other use of the building between then and being torn down
(unknown date). When dealing with Cop stuff, where else to look
other than the writings of the "Singing Cop," himself, Paul
Beardsley (RIP)? Indeed, Paul did refer to the house being used
for the Patrol Headquarters for the Richland Area. This fits very
nicely with the memories, between the McClendon house facility
that eventually became Ernie's and the 770 Building on the South
side of Knight St. Good memories, guys!
Bomber Cheers,

Re: Sad News
It is with sadness that I let you know that Mark STAPLES ('82)
passed away January 4 at the University of Washington Hospital.
He was a good friend of my Son (Randal SOUTHAM ('82)) who was
with him 24/7 over the past few weeks. He was much too young to
go but cancer came and took him. Watch for the Obituary.

Re: Richland Bombers Basketball, 2010 Edition
Well, boys and girls, the team has completed eight of its twenty
games of the regular season schedule and one thing is perfectly
obvious: this is the best Bomber squad in 30 years. Not since
the awesome '79 team (widely ranked as one of the best teams in
Washington state tournament history) has such a formidable bunch
of players taken the floor. Unlike some of the past teams where
good athletes who specialized in other sports and happened to
play basketball formed the team, the core of this team is four
pure basketball kids doing very good basketbally things, and who
are joined by three good athletes to form the basic seven-player
rotation.
The fearsome foursome: seniors Dylan RADLIFF, Tanner DUNN, and
Colton McCARGAR; and junior Calvin DOUGLAS. The three basketball-
isn't-my-primary-sport (but I'm good at hoops too!) are seniors
as well: Mike DUNFORD, Hayden HILTY, and Garrett GALLINGER. The
full-time varsity squad is completed by senior Derik BRIGGS (a
transfer from Pasco) and junior Grant GALLINGER (Garrett's
brother). Three kids from the JV join the varsity for games:
juniors Jake McKINNEY and Bob Imhoff; and sophomore Colter QUICK
(aside: the three JV players rarely get into games, not because
they aren't good enough -- they could start for some schools'
teams -- but because they get "quartered" (a player can play in
only four quarters against a given opponent; if they play any
time at all in each of the four quarters of the JV game they are
ineligible to play in the varsity contest); this has been a
failure in the Bomber program for as long as I can remember.
This team can score a LOT of points! Three different players
have led the team in scoring: McCARGAR (6 times), DUNN (1), and
RADLIFF (1). Everybody can score: there have been four kids in
double digits in three of the games; five players have scored ten
or more in at least one game. The most amazing scoring game was
the most recent: 98 against a decent Hermiston team; they shot
68% (11 of which were 3's) from the field.
It is a real pleasure to watch this crew at work. If you can
possibly tear yourself away from whatever trash-tv is on, come to
a game.

Re: Ernie's Typewriter Shop
Ernie's Typewriter Shop was at one time The Hobby Shop. I think
earlier rather than later. I recall a glass globe toy dispenser
that was priced at five cents. But initially the coin slot only
accepted pennies, and I remember a few after-school (Lewis and
Clark) visits harvesting little nickel toys-in-an-egg for a penny
each when the owner wasn't looking. I was probably in the fifth
grade, so the year was 1954-'55. Fortunately this was not the
beginning of a life of crime.

I also attended the Father-Daughter banquet in 1959 which was
held at the Kennewick Social Club. I felt pretty special since I
had two sisters and somehow I got to be the one to attend. I got
Reagan's autograph that night as well.

In 1967 I worked for the California Legislature and I would wait
each day at quitting time for the bus and while waiting, Governor
Reagan and his CHP driver would come out of the big parking
garage and drive past the bus stop. He always waved to me. Nice
man.

RHS cafeteria on the 13th of January until about 8:00 if needed,
we need volunteers from each class. The registration form will be

I have two grown sons who are body builders and they use a
product they get from Costco called EAS Premium Protein. It comes
in a 6 lb gold and purple bag and costs around 32 dollars. The
vanilla is the best, I think anyway. It is 54% protein and tastes
good! I've tried some of the other proteins they have used over
the years and this is the only one I could stand drinking.
