Re: Ganzel's Barbershop
I think I had my first haircut in Ganzel's at about age 15 (1949
or so), and certainly remember both him and Otis, the black man
who gave shoe shines. Otis was, I think, one of the few black men
in Richland, as I remember it, and was a truly affable fellow. My
father almost always got Otis to shine his shoes, whether they
needed it or not. As a teenager, I was uneasy about having my
shoes shined, but Dad urged me to do so, saying Otis could use
the money to better advantage than I would! So when home from
military school on a holiday break (Hill Military, Portland, OR),
I'd get Otis to shine my dress shoes.
The barbershop was downtown in those days, for sure.

To all who have sent helpful information about Protein Powder:
A Big THANK YOU. Sandra is now 6 weeks behind on her chemo
treatments due to low platelet count. This is a nightmare... but
then I think of Larry MATTINGLY ('60) and his family and the loss
of his daughter. And so many others! Sandra's "2nd annual 49th"
birthday is next week. I have been watching old home movies for
hours so Janet can make the "traditional" 50-year DVD. The rolls
I chose are at Sight & Sound, in Kennewick, being put on a DVD
for Janet to work with, besides many still photos loaded from my
computer into her 'whatever it's called'... (my computer
illiteracy is showing!)
On another subject:
Have spend 5 hours trying to get my Cruise and flights cancelled
because of Glenn's pending (unexpected) surgery. Something to do
with his kidney not getting enough blood. We were to leave Monday
morning at 5:00instead, he will be entering a hospital in Yakima
on Monday with surgery on Tuesday. I have to take this part of
the "package" with Caribbean Cruises before I can give Sandra &
Bobby the 2nd part, which is a trip to Puerto Vallarta. Perhaps
we can go next month. Who knows?!?!?

Kinda suits my mood.

Re: Ganzel's Barber Shop
So much talk about Ganzel's Barber Shop brought back memories. My
dad, Clyde, got me a job there as a cashier when I was 16 (1952).
I can remember sitting on a big tall stool by the register. I
don't know exactly how many barber chairs there were in there,
but it was a lot. Must have been at least a dozen. I can remember
feeling overwhelmed with all of the men around! It was my dad's
favorite shop. I think I mostly worked on Saturdays. Can't
believe it is still in the Parkway. Must go in one day and see
if it brings back any memories!!

getting some freezing rain & possible snow mix on Friday night.

There was a nice article about the 2010 Bomber team with special
emphasis on senior Colton McCARGAR ('10) in Friday's TCH:
http://www.tri-cityherald.com/1358/story/855060.html
There was a photo with the article:
http://www.tri-cityherald.com/959/gallery/115765-a855724-t3.html
A note about the photo: Colton is wearing one of the Bomber
practice uniforms -- black/silver reversible jersey, black shorts
-- his game uniform number is 20.
I waited for last night's score from East Wenatchee: Bombers 58
Eastmont 54. The team is 9-0 going into tonight's game against
9-0 Kamiakin at Dawald Gym.
Golly, TCH had the mini box score online before midnight, so here it is:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Richland 58, Eastmont 54
RICHLAND (58)
Dunford 8, Radliff 13, McCargar 7, Hilty, Dunn 3, Grant
Gallinger, Garrett Gallinger 15, Douglas 12.
Totals 20-49 15-18 58.
EASTMONT (54)
Gausman, Thomas 9, Robinson 6, Spaeth 10, Crawford 2,
Malachi Roberts 20, Higuchi 7.
Totals 21-46 5-11 54.
Richland 12 15 17 14 58
Eastmont 10 14 13 17 54
Highlights Rebs: Rich 37 (Douglas 10), East 22; Radliff 7 assists.

Re: Ganzel's Barber Shop
I fondly remember my Dad, Walt Smyth, taking me to Leo Azure at
Ganzel's to get haircuts. Leo's son Mickey was in our class of
'62 and was in my Cub Scout den. I think Mickey had an older brother.

Re: Father-Daughter Banquet
My sister and I attended the Father-Daughter Banquet. I got my
first pair of high-heel shoes for that event; trust me, they were
not very high. Ronald Reagan was with G.E. at the time, which is
why he was here. The banquet was held at the Social Club in
Kennewick (in the building that is now Walker Furniture, corner
of Clearwater and Morain. There was a bowling alley behind, but
it burned down. Winco was in that building until they built the
new one further up on Clearwater. I saw The Fleetwoods there
once. I wonder if that was at the banquet?
Re: The Love of my Life
On December 30, 2009, I re-married (renewed our wedding vows) the
love of my life. We had a nice mini-wedding. Although I did all
the planning, I had excellent helpers for the event: Judy WILLOX
(61) took care of the Guestbook, Larry HOLLOWAY (64) took
pictures, Mary MASSEY Holloway (64) and Dena EVANS Harr (64)
cut cake and poured punch (and took care of many other things
that popped up), Ruby Klein (nab) made the flowers (corsages,
boutonnieres (boot-in-ears - lol), and bouquets), Jan Schaeffer,
and Carol Droppo (nab) decorated. Dena arranged flowers around
our unity candle and it was lovely. We walked in together to
Pachelbel's Canon, which is a piece of music I really love. We
wrote vows to say to each other, which was really special. We
walked out to Chopin's Polannaise, which is a piece of music we
both love. He bought me a new diamond wedding set and it is just
beautiful (we've always had bands). Armand is the love of my
life. He is definitely a keeper! Someone at the reception told us
that if we ever split up, we'd have to get divorced twice! lol
Not gonna happen! I can't even think about being married to
anyone else. Armand is my fourth husband and I am his third wife;
we've been married over 33 years, so I think we finally got it
right. He always says, "number 3 on my scorecard, but number 1 in
my heart." How could I not love him?!

Re: Bomber babes Rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's time again for another Bomber-Babe birthday... this doll
from the class of '64 has been feeling kinda puny lately and we
have all wished her the best... soon as I heard I shot Jimbeaux
('63) and SIMPSON ('65) a note cuz these guys have kind of a
lil club goin' to keep people's spirits up and give little pep
talks as they are needed... musta worked... she seems mo betta
lately... Did I tell ya my Bowling story? I only have one bowling
story because I never went again after my one awful experience...
I was with some group but have no clue what group it was...
maybe we even went for PE (?)... who knows... all I know is Linda
MONTGOMERY ('65) was bowling in the lane next to me... I swung
the ball behind me for a great shot (do you make "shots" in
bowling???)... anyway... yes you already guessed it... the ball
slipped outa my hand... into Linda's lane and hit her in the
leg... that was it... no more bowling for the kid... my next
memory of a bowling alley is coming home from V-nam... I guess
the barber shop in Okinawa musta been in the bowling alley...
I hadda get my hair cut since it hadn't been cut in months...
wouldn't let them shave me tho... I still wasn't sure I was in a
safe zone yet... as I walked out "Love is Blue" was playing on a
juke box... dunno why that memory stays with me... my daughter
used to bowl so I used to take her to the Gold Coast on
weekends for that... but I never touched a ball after my first
experience... so why we talkin' about bowling? Cuz the birthday
girl is a top notch bowler and she always gives me a call when
she's in Vegas with her [bowling] team... and I just love the
attention, of course! So HAPPY BIRTHDAY Linda REINING ('64) on
January 9, 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Protein Powder
It was being talked about protein powder. Do you have Fred
Meyer's where you live? I found some "Designer Whey" protein
powder there a lot cheaper than GNC and just as good. I use it on
occasion for an afternoon snack on the NutriSystem diet. Because
I use it for part of a diet I have to mix it with water but
sometimes add my fruit serving and some ice in it and it makes
for a nice drink.

Re: "Casket" Commercial a Doritos Crash the Superbowl Contest Finalist!
I have a good fiend who is trying to break into commercials in
Los Angeles. She appears in a commercial that has made it to the
top 6 to appear during the Superbowl She has asked her friends to
help spread the word. I am reaching out to the Bomber community
to help in this effort. If you go to
http://voteforcasket.com or
http://voteforcasket.com/how-can-i-help/
You can watch the commercial and vote for it. Maybe someday I
will be able to post entries about my friend Doreen - the way
that David RIVERS ('65) gets to do with Terence Knox [aka BOMBER
Terry DAVIS ('65)... David writes all his own copy. -Maren]...
by the way, she attended Ferris High School in Spokane but let's
not penalize her for that. Thanks for any help you can provide.
