Re: Wow, the tower!
 http://alumnisandstorm.com/htm2010/Xtra/Any/100113-P-3484.jpg

Boy...does that bring back memories. Click on the added site and
what a pic! You can see Williams coming from right to left, and
then Thayer from the bottom up to the left side. The tower is at
the upper left. That first finished block in the center with the
"A" house setting biased to he empty lot across Williams was the
first block occupied. That empty lot shows the first construction
of the Randall Doyle grocery store and Morgan drugs.

Moving from Williams up Thayer, we were the third "B" house,
right side. In the first court to the right, lived the Snapps and
later the Richeys. Also Shorty Hoffstead, the Cop. (I understand
he won the lottery as to what Hanford was about.)

But the Tower! When we kids would pass a house under construction
we would notice little signs, "ok by plumbing", "ok by elect"
etc. I would add "ok by dick" to add to the confusion. This
became my icon ending up on test papers at school, etc. (see my
addy above). One moonlit nite, I talked Pinky Bloomer and Bobby
Snapp into accompanying me up the tower to tag it. I had a large
chunk of carpenters chalk, and I put the "okbydick" up on the
first black stripe. It was up a bit and I had to stand on the
railing some. Pinky held on to me. (Talk about nuts.) I put the
sign in large letters so we could see the art from a distance.
It worked fine, except everyone knew who did it. Happily, there
were no repercussions. Dad never mentioned it, but I know he
knew. Nowadays the statute has passed.

Some years later, they repainted the thing, covering the letters.
However, they were written in chalk with a lot of lime which sort
of burned thru. One couldn't make it out as well, but from a
couple blocks, there it was.

Such was the life in early Richland.

I climbed that tower a couple times if only to see my bro's
"OK by Dick" scrawled on it.

It seems to me there were two water towers in Richland when I
lived there. is that true??

I remember hiding a bottle of apple juice in an old car parked
under the water tower on Thayer and Torbett. JB Choate and I were
trying to ferment it and make some sort of apple jack. We added
raisins and sugar and let it cook. Just when it was looking
really vile, JB's brother found it and threw it away. he probably
saved our lives.

Re: Bomber Hoops

Well, the "great confrontation" between Kamiakin and Richland
came to pass; and, it wasn't much of a confrontation. There was
just this sort of inevitability of a Bomber victory which ran
through the course of the contest. The affair went back and forth
for the first 12 minutes or so, then the Bomber machine kicked
in and Kamiakin was toast. The only question became how dark
the bread would be toasted. The game was broadcast on KONA-610
(evidently you can get the broadcast over the internet; google it
to see how) and Don Meneeley, the analyst (and dad of the
Kamiakin coach) paid proper respect to the Bomber team .... his
assessment: Bombers are good .... very good.

Coach Streufert and Dylan RADLIFF ('10) and Garrett GALLINGER
('10) were on the post game show. Garrett let the cat out of the
bag: the guys wait around, confident that as the plays develop
Dylan will find one of them for the easy basket. Radliff is
without a doubt (I'm going to get into all sorts of trouble
saying this) the best basketball player Earl has ever coached,
and likely one of the best Bomber players ever. He is a pure
point guard and will be a much better college player than he is
a high school player -- the key metric: he has enormous (I mean
HUGE) hands; his control of the basketball is simply amazing.
I'll have more to say about him later.

The guys go to Walla Walla tomorrow for a key match up. Wa-Hi won
at Eisenhower last night to go 8-2. Bombers ought to win; Wa-Hi
is a two-and-out squad: two good players (both D-1 signees) and a
bunch of kids, none of whom could make the Bomber team. But, the
game does have to be played and Wa-Hi won't roll over and play
dead. I may miss this game for the first time ever since I moved
back to Richland; my truck has an electrical problem so I have
to take the bus to WW today for a VA eye appointment (no problem)
and I likely can stay overnight; but, if I go to the game on
Friday I would need a ride back to Bombeville. Anybody want a
grumpy old man in his/her car Friday night? (Well, not all that
grumpy; but, he does talk a lot.)

Oops, almost forgot to note: first AP poll is out. Bombers are
#4. But note that there are only nine voters in the poll; take
the result with a huge grain of salt.

I guess I was WRONG about that being sister, Kate ('61) sitting
next to Mom. Sal thinks it's herself with contacts, which I'd
forgotten she wore in the '60s. Kate must have been on a date,
and I don't know where Colleen ('56) was. You'd think I'd know
my own family members...

Re: Sorenson Pic #024

See the water tower (third picture from the top):
  http://allgallery.tripod.com/0000s/RichlandRes.html

The water tower can also be seen in this picture:
  http://alumnisandstorm.com/htm2010/Xtra/Any/100113-P-3484.jpg

I think the picture of the water tower was from my family's yard
at 1500 Thayer Drive. I'm amazed at Maren's picture, taken in
June, 1944, shows what appears to be our house. I guess I had
just assumed that we had moved from Yakima, in August, 1945, to
1500 Thayer when it was new and became available. We lived next
to the Doyle and Nadine Keller family so hopefully Gene (Buddy)
or Bev can shed some more light on the matter for me.

Although we lived at 1500 Thayer only until I was in first grade
what wonderful, fond memories I have of all the kids and their
parents in the neighborhood. Every house had several kids and
we seemed to be all about the same age. Kids were everywhere.
I remember walking to kindergarten and first grade at Sacy
(until Jason Lee opened) and home from the Village Theater with
my brother Mick ('61-RIP) and Pete Overdahl ('60). Through the
years I have wondered how my mom allowed me to walk so far home
from kindergarten by myself. So recently I re-drove our path and
found that is was actually only a half mile to school. Ah, so
many great memories!

On another subject, does anyone remember where the "Bubbles" were
located. I remember many a summer night going to the "Bubbles"
with friends after the drive-in and going for a swim. It had to
be a diversion canal because one canal went one way and one the
other and when you jumped in the water at the bottom shot you
downstream.

I was also wondering if and when we got our driver's permits. I
remember getting my driver's license on my 16th birthday but I
don't recall ever having a driver's permit. I remember driving
around before my birthday though because one time I was driving
my girlfriend's (Pat Rice) parents' Chrysler 500 and we had to
change places when we saw a police car turned around and quickly
stopped us in the Highlands. Another narrow escape! What fun
memories!

Re: Sorenson's Picture #626
  http://alumnisandstorm.com/htm2009/Xtra/Sor/091228-626-Who.html

Well, finally I'm getting around to writing in about photo #626
after all the Christmas activities and company. On December 28th
in Sorenson's installment of 8 my father, Alden Greninger, was in
the middle of the group of men at the table. He's the one with
the very dark summer tan. Hank Carlberg, one of our neighbors
on Harris Ave., is behind him to his left.

Thanks very much for including this photo in your group. Since my
father died 12 years ago, it is wonderful to see this photo.

Re: Water Tower

I thought that looked like the water tower at Thayer and Torbett
as I was raised on that corner. As to when it was taken down; I'm
thinking the '60s (perhaps the middle of that decade). A couple
then bought the lot and built a new home on it. I was in the old
neighborhood in August while there for my reunion and it has
really changed. That part of Torbett is still very narrow, in
fact I wanted to take some pictures of my "old house" and went
around the corner and parked on McPherson as it is wider in that
area. I never quite figured out how they broke up those backyard
areas though. When I was really small all the backyards ran
together into one big asphalt parking area. Then they broke them
up and I think our yard was the smallest but then thinking about
it we were the furthest house from the central area. Ah, the good
old days of growing up in Richland, Washington, USA.
