Hello, everybody;
Looking at the water tower photos from last week took me back
more than 50 years, and made me realize that Dick McCOY ('45) was
part of the McCoy family that lived behind us, in the 1300 block
of Thayer. The photos of McPherson are taken looking north up the
1300 block. Between very early February of 1945 and the fall of
1958, the Ford family (Joe and Chris and their sons Joe ('63),
and David ('66), aka Dicky) lived at 1319 McPherson. The photos
show two "A" houses set perpendicular to McPherson, on the west
(left) side of the street. Between them and concealed by the
nearer "A" house was a "B" house set back from the street; 1317
and 1319. The near "A" house was the residence of the Hoisington
family (Alvin was the kid I remember) and the Wittebort family
(Wanda ('53) and Chuck (NAB)). The far "A" house was the home of
the Cross family (Carol ('64) and Bob ('62)) and the Dreher
family (Leslie ('63) and Randy ('71)) Across McPherson were the
Blakeneys, the Lattins, the Haskins family, and others that I
can't remember. The water tower loomed a few blocks away to the
north, and had a companion tower at the south end of Thayer.
In 1958 we moved to the corner of Barth and Falley in the south
end. The photo of the yellow "H" house with green shutters (at:
http://hanford.houses.tripod.com/houses/h99Chimney.jpg was
home until I left for school and other pursuits in the '60s.
Father Joe and mother Chris stayed on there until they passed
away. The dogwoods in front were my Mother's Day gift in about
1972. One was supposed to be pink, but alas, it bloomed a year
later in dogwood white.
Seeing the photos of old home space is oddly moving. Thanks so
much to Don Sorenson (NAB), Dick McCOY ('45), Rod PETERSON ('63),
John ADKINS ('62), Maren SMYTH ('63 & '64), and others who
contributed.
And hello to Dick ('45) and Pat ('55) McCOY, from another guy
from the old neighborhood.
-Joe FORD ('63)

Re: Why Me
why me alla time... can't remember who used to say that... it was
funny when he said it tho... kinda like Crazy and the Mr. Dunahey
routine... so here I am... thinking I'm way ahead of the game,
got my room... got HEIDLEBAUGH'S ('65) room and the Dear Ms. Ann
('63) tells me she is the FIRST to sign up for R2K+10... I coulda
been a contendah... oh well... so I went to the Bomber site and
couldn't find the sign up sheet... now I'm figuring I missed
reading something in the Sandstorm and have no clue what to do...
just like when I didn't know I hadda sign up for the SAT and
hadda sit outside while all the other kids took the exam, I'll
be sitting outside the school while everyone else is having Chile
and Cimmommen rolls... or is it cornbread? Maybe Ray STEIN ('64)
will take pity on me and send a helping to me while I'm sitting
on the Group W bench... waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah... well, at least
I can do one nice thing before I go... specially since the
birthday girl today is a very special Bomber-babe... not just to
me but to a whole buncha people... I just feel so blessed to have
so many good buds with wonderful big sisters... The kids in her
famblie are just the coolest... her Bro Jackson ('65) and I
have been buds since we were about 4 or 5... she throws a mean
surprise party and is always there to sing Bass (that really
sounds wrong... let's see... Papa sang bass... yup... just can't
be right... )... hey maybe she and her Bro Gus ('57) will sneak
me in to the Bomber Bowl so at least I can get my picher took
with the rest of the kids... yeah... Patti ('63) could start
something to distract everybody and the others could sneak me
right in... perfect idea... once in, the Marines in the group
would never let them kick me out... youreeka! So I gotta say
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Missy Keeney ('59) on January 18, 2010!!!!!!!!!

Dear Fellow Bombers,
I am sad to report the loss of another Bomber and good friend.
Jim NOLAND ('64) passed away yesterday (1/16) after a courageous
battle with cancer. Jim and I met in high school and became
friends while working at the Mayfair stores back in the '60s.
After many years away from home we moved back in 2001 and found
that Jim was our next door neighbor. How lucky we were! Since
then Jim and I became the best of friends enjoying many days
fishing and many more afternoons/evenings solving the world's
problems over a beer and smoked salmon. We have been blessed with
his friendship these past few years and we will miss him
terribly. He is one of the most thoughtful and caring men I have
ever known.
Please keep his lovely wife Sheri and their family in your
thoughts and prayers.
Rest in Peace, Brother Jim,
-Mick HEMPHILL ('66)

Separations refers to 200 Area operations. This is where
plutonium is separated from irradiated uranium. Plutonium is
further processed into weapons parts. Your dad was intimately
involved with the most classified portion of Hanford Operations.
Where I've seen your dads name is on documents pertaining to
234-5 operations, or PFP as its referred to in the Herald.
