Reading Joe FORD'S ('63) description of homes on McPherson brings
back a few old memories to me to, as we lived briefly with our
Cross cousins in l948 until our ranch house on Olympia was built
and we moved into the spanking new home... I think we moved in
before school started in l949, because I was crushed I couldn't
go to school with my new friends at Spalding that fall, so they
either didn't have kindergarten that fall, or I was crushed at
not being able to physically be in school all day with my new
girl friends, as they were all older than I was by a few critical
months... I've always remembered Joe FORD ('63) as being a part
of "Auntie Phyl's and Uncle Bob's original neighborhood, that we
used to visit often before they too left for a ranch house, not
sure when that was...

I'm still feeling the effects of a childhood injury I had when
someone threw a ball that hit me in the face because whoever
it was didn't holler to let us know it was coming. I had a
successful root canal done when I was in junior high school, but
recently that tooth broke off, so I need a replacement for the
temporary I've now had for a few months. As the current dentist
says, "You certainly got your money's worth out of that repair."

On a lighter note, we've just returned from l0 days at
Leavenworth with our oldest son and his new wife and our
new 5 year old grandson. (he and I had fun sledding while the
others boarded and skied...) I didn't make it to the Tri-Cities
because I was able to meet my brother, Roy CROSS ('65) and his
wife and their freshman age son for his basketball game against
Wenatchee while we were there, visiting my Mother in law... who
is not doing so well at Colonia Vista there...

All in all we did get to meet some other friends around the state
and had a good vacation, and I always love being in Washington
state. It was hard to come back to the Christmas decorations...
but that is life in the fast lane...

Happy New Year's Late, guess, I should say Happy Martin Luther
King day, on time.

My husband is now starting seriously on his final plans to be
ordained in the Methodist church this summer...

Our best,
-Helen CROSS Kirk ('62) ~ back in Indiana, but rarely by the
lake, and sometimes by the river, the Ohio that is...

Since the first of the year I think I've qualified for some kind
of a Sandstorm "Trifecta", in that I worked at the Bon Marche,
still use a fountain pen and tried on several occasions to climb
the water tower in the Southend. As I recall it was in a rather
huge field behind Chico Taylor's house. Chico lived on Adams
about the 300 or 400 block. I'm pretty sure I never made it to
the top, but do remember that getting onto the ladder itself
was a challenge. I'm pretty sure none of us was over five foot,
and I'm sure the ladder was higher than that. Somewhere in the
recesses of that part of my mind that remains undamaged by warm
Oly, I remember someone who ran out of courage while above me
on the ladder. Might have been Norman HILL ('63), or Richard
FLORA ('63). I didn't know any of the girls whose names were
painted on the tank, nor do I recall when said water tower was
taken down. I did participate in numerous commando raids into the
old Richland High School that was behind Lewis & Clark, in search
of pigeons. Bobby & Billy Chipmunk ('63-RIP) were after some
pigeon merit badge, which was the impetuous for our missions. I
think we left Kenny WRIGHT ('63) in the dark gym in the basement
there a couple of times, but he got even with us by selling $6.00
a pint Popov Vodka at the Camlin in '63.

p.s. Speaking of the Camlin. Sister Mary Katherine Roe is now
living just across the street from that Olive Street Palazzo, on
the twenty somethingth floor of some tony condo.

To: Don Sorenson (NAB)

Thank you very much for your explanation of "separations".
When I asked my father what he did at Hanford, his answer
was, "I sign papers."

I appreciate your sincere answer, although perhaps at that
time he couldn't tell me the truth. My son also gave me the
explanation that you did. Thank you.

Re: Sorenson's picture 029
 http://alumnisandstorm.com/htm2010/Xtra/Sor/100118-029-Where.html

The building in picture 029 at the corner of Swift and Stevens is
the old Kadlec Hospital. The kitchen was on the Stevens' side as
I worked there as a candy striper.

It's fun looking at these old pictures and trying to recall where
or what they were. A lot of them were either before "my time" or
places I've never seen.

Thanks, Don, for sharing them.
