A very special happening occurred tonight [1/21] at the Richland
Community Center at their annual Volunteers Appreciation night.
Each year a person is picked that they feel has made outstanding
contributions to Richland.
The winner for they year 2009 was Ralph Myrick Class of 1951!
The unusual part is that for the year 2008 the Volunteer of the
Year was me - Betty Bell Norton, also class of '51.
A nice prize for our 1951 Class!
Ralph was as speechless as I was!

After sending my condolences to all who've lost loved ones
recently, and wishing good health to those many who are fighting
against ill health, I want to share a happy surprise: tonight
I went to the party honoring the Volunteers at the Richland
Community Center. Shortly after Carolyn Voohees (who had invited
me) and I walked into the building, I saw a woman I sort
of recognized. I didn't say anything at first, but finally
approached her and said, "I think I should know you…" She said,
"Maybe you do, I've lived here all my life." I asked, "What's
your name?" "Norma Myrick." "Oh my gosh, I DO know you! I'm
Marilyn DeVine, class of '52!" We talked for a few minutes and
Carolyn and I went into the party room and chose seats at a table
with one of our Friday night Pinochle players.
The evening progressed and different important people were
introduced. Then came time to name the 2009 Honoree... but lots
of clues were given first. Including that "he graduated from
Columbia High School, now Richland High School." I was looking
around, wondering if it was someone I might have known.
Low and behold, the Volunteer of the Year is our own Ralph
Myrick, class of '51!!!
Later I went to their table and introduced myself. He didn't
exactly remember me but did remember the name and my sister
Sharleen ('50-RIP) and my brother Terry ('52). Norma sort of
remembered me and my younger brother Richard ('57-RIP). I asked
Norma if she was going to put this in the Sandstorm and she
explained that she is totally over-emailed due to involvement in
the Washington Operation Thank You, an organization most of you
have likely heard of: they are a group of Patriotic Americans
supporting our military and their families, collecting items and
sending packages to the military serving in Afghanistan. So I
told her I would put a note in. We talked further about the
horrendous conditions in that part of the world and how sad we
are that our young men and women have to be there. (Maren would
censor me if I included the whole conversation.) Anyway, if
anyone wants to find out more about them and their project, just
get in touch with them at http://www.waoperationthankyou.com/
Another WOTY member I met is Doris Ayres. I want to give a
personal Thank YOU to the groups who actively support our troops
in one way or another.
Best Bomber regards to each and all,
-Marilyn "Em" DeVINE ('52) ~ Richland

Re: Big Pharma and cancer
In '66 I was medically retired from the Navy and faced with the
requirement of going to work for a living. For some reason, I
chose Pharmacy and entered Pharmacy School at the U. I started
out in retail and migrated to hospital work, where I mixed toxic
chemicals for injection which were called chemotherapy. I have
since done a lot of reading in alternative medicine and if
faced with a diagnosis of cancer, I would investigate all three
remedies which I am going to mention. It has become evident that
too many of our fellow alums and families are facing this
problem.
#1 "Graviola Tree Extract", this natural product was discovered
in the Amazon and Big Pharma tried to duplicate it for seven
years and couldn't. The company filed it to forget it, no profit
possibility. Several years later an employee with compassion,
found it and divulged it.
#2 There are a couple of Japanese mushrooms that seem to
have healing power or at least increasing immunity. They are,
"Reishel" and "Maitaki".
#3 And most interesting, "Essiac".
This story demonstrates how the FDA has been fighting natural
products for a 100 years. This story makes interesting reading
and all three can be had on the internet.

Re: Weather
Yep, Carol, we are getting LOTS of rain, also snow in Tehachapi
and the Frasier Park areas, along with snow on the grapevine
(they closed it, yesterday, for about 5 hours)... that is the
route from here to Southern CA. I know it is causing lots of
flooding in Southern CA, but I LOVE this weather... we need the
rain. only thing I don't like is the blasted winds that we are
having... 40+ mile an hour winds and they are causing all sorts
of problems... power outages, trees being blown over (even blew
over a huge eucalyptus onto a couple cars on the 58 freeway...
did damage to two vehicles, but nobody was hurt), fences blown
down (good, old grape stakes), and debris all over the place! We
are supposed to have this weather til Friday... Thursday will be
our 5th or 6th storm, so far. not sure if we are due more or not,
but am loving it!!!!!! *grin*

Re: Jim NOLAND ('64-RIP)
As I was reading the Obituaries in last Monday's Tri-City Herald,
I saw the names of two people I knew from our days at RHS: Joy
BURKE Toner Stiles and Jim NOLAND!
Joy and her first husband (Mike Toner ('66-RIP)) were classmates
of mine. They were very special people who shared a special love!
Many years later, Joy and I bumped into each other in a hallway
at Battelle's ROB Building, where we both were working. Over the
past 20+ years, we'd 'reconnect' every five years at the Class of
'65 Reunions, catching up on family news and such! She was a
wonderful lady, a proud wife and Grandmother, and a lifelong
friend to everyone who knew her! She'll be sorely missed!
I remember Jim as a tall/skinny, outgoing, smart young man with a
wonderful smile, who graduated the year before I did! However, I
was even more shocked when I realized that the "young" Jim NOLAND
was Jim NOLAND who worked for the same company I did... Lockheed
Martin in Richland! We worked in different departments in
different buildings, but our paths frequently crossed! For the
past several years, we both worked on (and at) the Lockheed
annual IT DAY event at the Tri-Cities Convention Center!
Jim was dedicated, hard working manager, who respected (and was
respected by) the people he worked with! His job involved a lot
of travel, especially in the past year or two. He was out of
state when I Retired last August, so I didn't get the chance to
say 'Good-bye!' Now, I'll say a different kind of "Good-bye" this
weekend as I join his family, friends and coworkers at his
'Celebration of Life.'
And so, my friends, as Jimmy Durante always sang: "Thanks for the
Memories!"

My deepest sympathies to the family of Jim NOLAND ('64-RIP). They
grew up next door to me on Torbett Street.
I remember when I was shipping out to basic training in the Army,
January, 1974, there was a gal from Walla Walla who was headed to
Ft. McClellan, AL with me. There were 2 other gals headed to Ft.
Jackson, SC for basic as it had just started taking females for
basic training. One of the gals was from Wapato and spoke highly
of Jim. I recall her calling him "Jim" and not "Mr. Noland" and
he was her English teacher at Wapato High School.
