Re: BBB Alerts Consumers about U.S. Census Workers:
Be Cooperative, But Cautious!
http://video.bbb.org/bbb_console.php?campaignId=18262&bureauId=1393
For years, Better Business Bureau has educated consumers
about not giving out personal information over the telephone
or to anyone who shows up at their front door. With the
U.S. Census process beginning, BBB advises people to be
cooperative, but cautious, so as not to become a victim of
fraud or identity theft.
The first phase of the 2010 U.S. Census is under way as
workers have begun verifying the addresses of households
across the country. Eventually, more than 140,000
U.S. Census workers will count every person in the U.S.
and will gather information about every person living at
each address including name, age, gender, race and other
relevant data.
"Most people are rightfully cautious and won’t give out
personal information to unsolicited phone callers or
visitors, however the Census is an exception to the rule,"
said Steve Cox, BBB spokesperson. "Unfortunately, scammers
know that the public is more willing to share personal data
when taking part in the Census and they have an opportunity
to ply their trade by posing as a government employee and
soliciting sensitive financial information."
The Census data will be used to allocate more than $300
billion in federal funds every year, as well as determine a
State’s number of Congressional representatives. Households
are actually required by law to respond to the Census
Bureau’s request for information.
During the U.S. Census, households will be contacted by
mail, telephone or visited by a U.S. Census worker who will
inquire about the number of people living in the house.
Unfortunately, people may also be contacted by scammers who
are impersonating Census workers in order to gain access to
sensitive financial information such as Social Security,
bank account or credit card numbers. Law enforcement in
several states have issued warnings that scammers are
already posing as Census Bureau employees and knocking on
doors asking for donations and Social Security numbers.
The big question is - how do you tell the difference between
a U.S. Census worker and a con artist? BBB offers the
following advice:
• If a U.S. Census worker knocks on your door, they will
have a badge, a handheld device, a Census Bureau canvas
bag and a confidentiality notice. Ask to see their
identification and their badge before answering their
questions. However, you should never invite anyone you don't
know into your home.
• Census workers are currently only knocking on doors to
verify address information. Do not give your Social Security
number, credit card or banking information to anyone, even
if they claim they need it for the U.S. Census. While the
Census Bureau might ask for basic financial information,
such as a salary range, it will not ask for Social Security,
bank account or credit card numbers nor will employees
solicit donations.
• Eventually, Census workers may contact you by telephone,
mail or in person at home. However, they will not contact
you by e-mail, so be on the look out for e-mail scams
impersonating the Census. Never click on a link or open any
attachments in an e-mail that are supposedly from the U.S.
Census Bureau.

I had not heard of this school, or of STEM schools at all, until
I checked this out.

Maren, I'm trying to find out information about a 50th class
reunion for the Class of 1960. Have searched the fantastic Bomber
website and can't find anything. Can't believe there won't be a
reunion. If there is, I'll be there, coming all the way from
Southern California. Any info you can give me would be
appreciated.
Thanks!

Re: Delta High School

Delta High School in Richland is a small high school focused on
science, math, and engineering-type subjects. It is located in
the old CBC building next to the Richland library. There were
hundreds of applicants for 100 positions, and the selection was
strictly by lottery, if I remember correctly. Someone else may
know more or even have a student in the program.

Re: THE day
Where were you when... so many of those questions out there...
my favorite... : "Where were you in '62"... I remember my first
"mixer"... as Tony Harrah ('65) and I entered gym, "Oh Donna" was
being played and I just knew that I was in the right place at the
right time... on the weekends while working on this or that in
the garage, I love Norm N. Nite's show, as he visits specific
dates in specific years... what a kick... coming home from the
Grand National Roadster Show this past weekend (where Jimmy
Heidlebaugh's ('65) "Spudnut Racing" "Tub" was prominently
displayed outside the Suede Palace... and the "Golden Rod"
Bonneville speedster we sold at Bakersfield a few years ago
was displayed in the building dedicated to racing in wonderful
restoration (to be sure much nicer than when it was built in
Colorado for a total cost of $950.00)), I slipped in "Two Car
Garage"... and listened to Kent and the boyz and the Ventures
play songs that spanned my school years... .what a blast... the
last Ventures song I bought was at State in '62 or '63 (I have
NO clue about sports and no recollection of the month)... Ricky
Warford and I were coming down the escalator in a department
store where I had just purchased "Perfidia" and Vonnie Reed ('60)
was going up the escalator... wow... small world! I remember
when the President was shot and I was in Contemporary World
History, we had a sub and a girl came in with a note and the sub
cried... Johnny Crowder ('65 RIP) and I went out to his car and
listened to the news report on the radio... and I don't recall
where I was when the news about the plane crash occurred (since I
didn't have a transistor radio!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!... ooops... that
was before any of us had them... nevermind... and I do NOT harbor
resentments!!!) but I recall the next weekend when a fellow did
impersonations on the Ed Sullivan Show and was instructed NOT to
do the Big Bopper... well, poor guy... that was his act... when
he did ol' J.P., Ed had him yanked off the set... poor guy... so,
yes... there are many of those moments... walking on the moon...
first kiss... first kiss... first kiss... opppppps sorry... "Gee
we're gonna miss ya, everybody sends their love... "
