In the spirit of Mike FRANCO's ('70) entry in yesterday's
Sandstorm, I am currently reconfirming that it is always hotter
in Thailand than it is in Seattle any time of the year (but my
wife, Noi, and I are having a great time nevertheless).
-Dave Hanthorn (GMC '63) ~ from hot, hot, hot Bangkok, where we
are staying cool with the air conditioner and lots of icy
cold Singha beer!

Re: George "Pappy" SWAN ('59)
Back in October (10/28 to be precise - I've been cleaning up
OUTLOOK) you responded to Dennis HAMMER's ('64) "the older one
gets, the faster time flies." Well, I listen to a National Public
Radio station on the way to and from work when I'm out of range
of the music station I like. They spoke of recent research that
validates that maxim: Apparently the brain's ability to judge
how fast time is passing changes as we grow older, and it was
validated with properly documented studies on various age groups.
Children are reasonably close in judging how long it takes for a
minute to pass, while we elderly usually think it's been a minute
in the 80 to 90 seconds range.
Think about it: The time it takes for discrete events to occur
doesn't change, but if your brain perceives 60 minutes have
passed when in reality it's been 80-90 minutes, then it will seem
like more than 30%+ additional events have occurred during what
we perceive to be the same old minute/hour/day/week/year/whatever.
They haven't determined whether it's a physical issue with
changing synapse function as we age or something else or a
combination of factors, but it's reassuring to know that time
isn't really compressing on us.
Regards, ecb3 - from central Virginia where we are in
about the 12th hour of what portends to be another
record-breaking storm for the next 24+ hours; I've
already shoveled over two inches of heavy, wet snow off
the 220-foot driveway - this is only six weeks after the
record-breaking two-foot snow on December 20 (the
mountain of bulldozed snow in one strip-mall parking lot
in Charlottesville had still not disappeared as of the 6-
inch snowfall last weekend). Yes, I know, this is nothing
compared to other places, but we become accustomed ...

Re: Schafer Sisters
Don't know if these are the two girls. They were cousins
of my husband, Fred SCHAFER ('63-RIP): Barbara and
Dorothy Schafer. Barbara lives in Benton City and Dorothy
is deceased. Their dad was Bob Schafer and mother was
Virginia both deceased.

Re: One of God's own lunatics is havin a birthday
If'n ya ain't familiar with the term, I think I'll send the clip
with this email. Or maybe I hafta send it like a picture... yeah
I'll do that...
[Too big for the Sandstorm... I googled and came up
with this link... you'll have to click the arrow to
start the sound. -Maren]
http://pitchpull.blogspot.com/2010/01/gods-own-lunatics.html
When Brad Wear ('68) sent it to me I opened it and had pretty
much my normal reaction to the sound... wanted to barf... had the
same reaction when our local airport got really huge... had only
been sober a few years and was driving at night and all of a
sudden saw what appeared to be flairs surrounding the town...
almost barfed that time too... it was planes circling but didn't
realize that at first... Naturally when this came to me the
first time I hadda pass it on to one of my favorite of God's own
lunatic's... glad I did... haven't seen him as often as I used
to... he and Vicki ('66) used to visit Vegas with the GREER's
('65; '66) every year and it was always a kick to have dinner
with them... not a big deal, just a nice quiet evening with
people who have been special to me all of my life... which brings
to mind a little incident that happened at my Constitutional
Class the other night... for those who are new, I always
introduce myself and tell where I grew up... I mean was raised...
I explain that it was a town not of neighbors but of family... a
town where if one kid gets cut, the rest of us bleed... hard for
many people to understand... anyway I always explain the three
"secret cities" during the War... well two of my "students"
had to jump in... one was from Los Alamos and the other from
Oakridge... what a small world... they fully understood our love
for our heritage and the honor it carries... Our birthday boy is
one of those family members I may not see enough, but my love for
him never dims... he is a hero to me in every way... growing up,
that term was often reserved for "older kids" (no ML ('63) not
Bomber-babes... they never get old... by the way... Our own
Number 10 ('64) mentioned the other day that he noticed I had a
"thing" for ML; he even suggested some palindromes that might
allow me to pledge my undying affection for her... darn... I
forgot to use them... arrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh... always a day late and
a dollar short)... anyway, as we have gained in years, the term
hero is no longer reserved for the older kids... so on the 6th of
February, please join me in wishing Johnny (ok... John) COLE
('66) a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 29 Palms
To: Mike Franco ("70)
Yep! You got the right place. The one base no Marine ever wants
to get stuck at. You drive east from the town of 29 Palms into an
even bigger nothing. In the summer when we were out in the field
for a week or so we would have to stay inside tents from about
1pm to 5pm because it would get so hot guys would collapse. Even
after being there for a year getting use to the heat. Our yearly
20 mile hike was always in June I believe and was not looked
forward to. Palm Springs was about 75 miles away but none of us
could even afford to buy a drink unless we saved our money for
months. I can't remember exactly which year '71 or '72 when Nixon
gave us enlisted men a huge pay raise. My pay went from $160 a
month to $320. We all thought we were rich when we got that
first check. They did have to go out looking for guys after that
weekend. Our base general would not allow us to be paid on a
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday because he knew half the
men would not show up the next day. We always got paid Friday
at noon and did not have to come back to base until Monday at
noon. It's the only base I saw where when we had a Lt. General
inspection we had to spray paint all the dead grass green. Of
course we were not painters so sidewalks, sides of building,
roads, power poles etc. got to have a green haze to them. It
looked soooo bad! Never understood the logic in that. Was the
Lt. General that dumb? Made me wonder who was leading us. All
considered it was a great time in my young life and I'm glad I
experienced it.
