Pam and I celebrate #44 (TODAY) February 1. [44 years ago] it was a bad time to get married: all the roads in the state were closed due to the winter weather. We almost didn't make it from Pullman to Richland for the wedding (arrived in Richland at 3am, rehearsal at 12 noon, marriage at 7pm, honeymoon scheduled for Spokane revised to Pasco). However wintery the start (-52° F in Pullman), the last 44 years have been wonderful, even with the difficulties that life hands us. -Tedd CADD ('66) and Pam HUNT Cadd ('66) -Tedd CADD ('66) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Brad UPTON ('74) Hey Bombers, I'm coming to Richland and doing a benefit show. Stan the man Musial died at 92. Just a terrific man and ball player. If there was a community effort in St. Louis, he was in on it. Always my favorite ball player ever. I was born in St. Louis, and went back to visit relatives in '45 and '49... went to the ball games at Sportsman park where I saw Stan and Red Schoendist (still alive in his 90s) and the rest. Great teams. The Cards trail only the Damn Yankees in World series wins.. In recent years Stan would show up at the park, and they would put him in a golf cart to circle the field to a standing ovation. Every time. Patty Andrew of the Andrew sisters died at 94. Wow. WWII. My biggest nostalgia hit from them was in 1943: "Rum and Coca Cola", playing at Richland's new rec hall on the juke box. Makes me feel warm all over. Also when I lived in Mound, MN for five years from grade school, Jr. high and just starting hi School, I would walk by a house that, it was said, was owned by their Uncle. I never saw them there. I thought it was just folklore. Then, hearing about Patty, I brought them up on my internet, and a whole para was devoted to their going there often, to get away and enjoy Lake Minnetonka at their Uncles Ed and John. So the stories were true. In the recent Club40 DustStorm there was a letter from Karen SULLIVAN Schwebke, ('73). She is Chair of the Class 40th reunion this year. Heck, Karen, I know you! You are the daughter of John SULLIVAN ('46-RIP) and Helen BARTLETT Sullivan Mowery ('52), both grand old friends. Problem is, Karen came to the Club 40 last year to check it out, and didn't look me up. I hope she brings her '73 class this year and then I will look her up. So there. -Dick McCOY (From the Tin Can Class of 1945) ~ The fog is just now lifting to another nice day then back to the rain. **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Jack GARDINER ('61) 54 years ago February 3, 1959 (The Day That Music Died) -Jack GARDINER ('61) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Dennis HAMMER ('64) Re: Four Chaplains Day Seventy years ago today at 12:55 a.m. February 3, 1943 off the coast of Newfoundland in the North Atlantic the troop transport ship Dorchester was torpedoed by the German U-boat U-223. There were approximately 900 men aboard including four chaplains: George L. Fox (Methodist), Alexander D. Goode (Jewish), Clark V. Poling (Reformed Church of America), and John P. Washington (Roman Catholic). The torpedo knocked out the ships electric system and panic ensued in the darkness. The four chaplains worked to calm the men and help them into life boats, passing out life jackets until they ran out. They then removed their own life jackets and gave them to others. Witnesses say the four linked arms and sang hymns as the ship sank, along with those unable to get off. With the water temperature of 34° F most of the men died of hypothermia, but 230 were rescued. In 1988 Congress established February 3 as "Four Chaplains Day." There was an attempt to award Them the Medal of Honor, but their actions were not during combat since the torpedo had already struck, so on July 14, 1960 congress authorized a Four Chaplains Medal with only four to be issued and presented to the next-of-kin. In 1948 a United States Post Office stamp was issued honoring the four chaplains. As a Cub Scout I needed a hobby so I picked stamp collecting. To me one of the stamps that stood out was the four chaplains stamp and the adults told us, "They were the ones who gave their life jackets to others on a sinking ship." For years that is all I knew about the story, but then is seems that the event started coming to my attention every few years, either a magazine article or something. All this time I had never heard or read anything from the survivors. Then just over a year ago I came across a website with a video that has some of the survivors telling their stories. http://immortalchaplains.org/Video/video.htm -Dennis HAMMER ('64) ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. His name is on a memorial in New York City dedicated to those lost in the Atlantic during WWII, and also on a memorial in the Catholic cemetery in Salt Lake City where my grandparents and parents are buried. It was a troop transport ship heading to Europe, and was sunk off the coast of Greenland. He had been trained as a decoder. My grandparents lived on E. 9th S. across from Liberty Park in SLC, and my grandmother said she was looking out the living room window and saw a Western Union boy riding past the house on a bike and said "He's going to the wrong house". The boy turned around and came to the door with the telegram that John had been lost at sea. John was an amateur golfer, and had won a few tournaments while in college. His life plan was to compete in golf and eventually go pro. I have one of his books from high school "A Tale of Two Cities", in which he had drawn on one of the fly leaves a plan for a golf course. -Mary Ann VOSSE Hirst ('63) ~ Lacey, WA where I'm off to church and then to a Super Bowl party **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Maren SMYTH ('63 & '64) Re: 2013 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race (#41) http://www.iditarod.com/ - Official Iditarod Site 26 (or so) days before the Race Start: 3/2/2013, 10am, Anchorage Official Re-Start 3/3/2013 2pm at the Willow Community Center. My longest friend ever (we met each other in 1951 at Jefferson Elementary), Ron RICHARDS ('63), has just learned that he has lung cancer and it appears to have metastasized. He will be having a pet scan and MRI this next week. He has never smoked... he did, however, work as a chemical engineer at Rocky Flats (in Colorado) for 6 years in the '60s. On his behalf (and mine), I'm wondering if anyone has had any kind of experience with non-smoking types of lung cancers and if you could recommend any treatment centers, books, doctors... anything you know might help him at this very difficult and scary time. He is very healthy and strong in all other ways. He left engineering to become an attorney, and, the last 8 years, he has taken his salmon fishing boat to Alaska and fished for salmon and halibut for 5 months out of each year. He and his wife, Nina, live in Port Angeles, WA and today (2/4/13), heard this preliminary report from an oncologist in Seattle. I asked his permission to put this on Sandstorm. If you would like to talk with him or write him, please e-mail me and I will send you the information. Prayers for Ron and his family would be much appreciated. We lived only a few minutes away in Silverton, OR at that time. It seems to me that we went as a class project, being bussed to Salem. I remember that it was a major event. I probably was as impressed as much by the train and locomotive itself as I was by the historical significance. (I was only eight years old.) It is at the Stoller Winery on McDougal Road. Through Newburg and west out of Dundee to where 18 takes off to the left/South and McDougal goes off to the right. The Stoller Winery is on the hill on the right about 1/4 mile. I don't have the right to invite you on the property but you will have a clear view from the road if you stay a bit east of the winery buildings you can see from the road. It is very open country and you can see for seal miles in some directions. The display is about 13 minutes of very hot fireworks. I will be firing from our new Mobile Gun Platform. It is a flat bed trailer I have converted and will hold all of the main battery of the display. If anyone does watch it I am always interested in a critique. I know, Vegas is warm compared to some places but for me once it reaches a certain temperature... that's it... I'm done! Of course given that it is the (hmmmmmm can't use the O word) first of the 4 W's b-days, that also means that it is Mary Lou WATKINS' ('63) Mom's b-day too. ML had a little minor surgery recently so I hope she can celebrate her Mom's b-day without too much trouble... 'cides, I sent her "Oklahoma Hills" by Michael Parks to recuperate by so she may be doing a jig (jig, Leo ('63)) at this very moment. Each classroom (I was at Marcus Whitman) was to elect someone to go and that person would be given the day off to go visit the Freedom Train, and was to report to the class afterwards about his or her experience. Not being particularly popular, I of course was not chosen. But ol' Direct Action Dick usually never takes no for an answer, and I found a way to get over there and see this remarkable early Cold War era attraction designed to communicate the superiority of the American Way over that of the Communists. I can't remember whether I was marked truant for so doing and I really didn't care, because it was something I wanted very much to do. As a later historian I am glad I did so. I even still have in my collection of memorabilia a plastic Freedom Train button with a bronze medal on a chain that I bought at the event. -Dick PIERARD ('52) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) Re: Freedom Trains Following the end of World War II, someone came up with the idea of taking various documents and artifacts around the country. It was figured the easiest way to do this was by rail. So, a collection of modern (read streamlined and light weight) cars be put together along with a modern passenger style diesel engine. As I recall, the entire train was painted silver with accents of red, white and blue. In the spring of 1948 the train arrived for its west coast portion of the journey stopping in several major cities along the way. It was called the "Freedom Train" and various companies made and sold or gave away all sorts of memorabilia. I mentioned earlier that Chevron had replicas of the Constitution and the Declaration. I feel certain that other portions of the Standard Oil conglomerate also did this. Sometime in 1974 or '75 a decision was made on the government level to send forth another "Freedom Train" in celebration of the nation's bi-centennial. The cars and their contents were roughly the same as before. The difference being that each car had a moving floor which kept the crowds moving along, and an admission charge was levied. For what ever reason, it was decided that the motive power for this train would be a steam engine, the principal engine would be the city of Portland, OR's, former Southern Pacific class GS-4 number 4449. This engine, along with three or four other steam engines (assisted by diesel engines) toured the country in 1976. Books have been written about the latter train, but I'm not sure if there is anything in print on the first. -Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ Mount Angel, OR where the sunny weekend never arrived. He drove for the Richland School District for 37 years beginning in the '40s. Your web site was recommended to me by Steve Aagaard [Richland School District Communications Director]. Several years ago I found Eldred's Autograph Book in the Penny Pinchers Thrift Store in West Richland. It was given to him in 1939. He was 15 years old and living in Pelican Reef, MN. Having enjoyed my own autograph book from 6th grade I felt the need to return Eldred's book to him or a family member. All I had to go on was the name Eldred. No last name. One thing lead to another and I was able to reach a reporter with a Pelican Reef, MN newspaper. He ran a column seeking information on Eldred. I learned that Eldred's last name might be Demshen and that his family moved out west somewhere during WWII. A long story short, I was able to find Eldred's son Dennis DAMSCHEN ('62) living in West Richland. Eldred passed away at the age of 74 in 1998. Dennis, his daughter and 9 year old grandson were excited to receive the treasure. I want to follow through with a story for The Ruralite and The Tri-City Herald. It would be nice to talk to someone that might remember Eldred. If you or any of your subscribers can share a memory of Eldred it would be great. As to the present state of the price of a barrel of oil... I thought to pass on a couple of things I have learned when filling my tank as much as 3-5 times a week some weeks. For the last 30 years as a salesperson, teacher, consultant, and private investigator, (I periodically do investigations of incidents with fireworks and some explosives, for attorneys.) I have averaged 48 to 60 thousand miles a year covering a 4 state territory in the lower 48, (and Alaska the last 16 years). Long story short: here are some things I do to save on gas. First I have an engine heater that I plug in at night. This keeps the engine from going down to ambient air temps at night and thus the engine warms up to the more gas efficient temps faster. Now... if you have a smart phone, get one of the several available apps for gasoline availability. I prefer "Gas Buddy". It uses my location to tell me where the lowest price is in my area. Today, on Gas Buddy I found gas 8 cents a gallon lower then any other within a 10 mile radius. It was less then 2 miles from me and in the direction I was going to do an errand. Also... get a "rewards card" from Safeway, Fred Myers, or other such places that have groceries and gas. After you spend some given amount of $ at the selected outlet your discount on gas goes up more then just the normally competitive price. So along with the base price I received another 8 cents a gallon today off of the pump price of 54.9/gal. One thing I noted is that the price varied widely from one Safeway to another in Tacoma. If you have a Costco card you can find a lessor priced supply to feed that hole in the fender of your auto. Costco accepts only Debit cards, NOT credit cards. But Safeway and Fred Myers both will take credit or debit cards. I use my Alaska Airlines Visa for most of my purchases each month and get an additional 2000 or more miles a month in added mileage. I am off to Costa Rica for a few days in the next couple of weeks and the flight to Dallas to change planes is paid for with mileage. An added potential to some of the gas apps is that if you take the time to make a timely report the price of gas at the location you got from the app, you get entered in the weekly drawing for very worthwhile prizes. The Gas Buddy Prize is $100. This is their way of giving you the most up-to-date-time price of fuel. This works really well if you are not familiar with the area and sources for fuel. Re: Oregon Show report A couple of Alums asked me to report how the display in Oregon was Tuesday night on my new Mobile Gun Platform went? According to my client, Terrific, Fabulous and numerous other simi liar terms. He and the 40 or so other people at the private affair (business celebration dinner) were totally pleased. I was impressed by the fact that most of the attendees were millionaires or better. They were excited by my choreography. We did a large display with main battery (on the trailer) and a 5 position "front", 3 positions, for special comets, a large cluster of multi-shot devices on the ground and a great finale, in less then 12 hours on site. Arrival at about noon and set-up and loading by 4 techs to finishing clean up and driving away before midnight, I think I proved the point. I am already planning another display on it in about 3 weeks. Getting the experience of the first display will make us even more efficient for the next one. It was a drag driving over 5 hours including dropping the trailer at our facility south of Olympia to get to bed at 5 AM, but the client's check in my pocket made it feel better. Teams will leave the official re-start line in the same order as they left Anchorage the day before. Re: Who do I cheer for... pre race thoughts... I kinda root for just about everybody that I "watch"... I'd like to have seen Lance Mackey win FIVE IN A ROW, but that didn't happen... Lance could tie Rick Swenson if he wins another one... same for Martin Buser and Jeff King... 5-time winner Rick Swenson needs another win to pull ahead of EVERYBODY... would love to see DeeDee Jonrowe win her first... Doubt Newt (the black guy) will ever win, but he's a hoot... saw a video of him a few years back talking about the "people" that he saw waving to him on his route... he was so sleep deprived that he was looking at (and waving back to) TREES.... and telling about it and just laughing at himself... Maybe Aliy Zirkle... she was #2 last year... And look at 2012 winner Dallas Seavey... in 2005 he was the youngest in history to run the race... he turned 18 that year right before the start of the race... last year he was the youngest winner in the history of the Iditarod... pretty amazing young man. 2008 holds the record for number of teams started: 96 - and 78 actually finished... so starting 69 this year isn't a record... I sometimes think about the number of dogs dumping in Anchorage right before the race... (I'm easily amused, huh?) mushers can (and most do) start with 16 dogs... but they bring 20 (or so) to Anchorage with them and narrow down to 16 that they start with.. so (conservatively) 16 dogs times 69 teams.... my calculator says that's 1104 dogs pooping before the race... I bet Anchorage (around the start anyway) STINKS.... and I didn't know till last year that they have those dickie warmers for the boy dogs!!! Common sense might have told me that earlier, but I never thought about it before.... What I love about this race so much is that ANYTHING can (and does) happen... 2004 had 4-time winner Doug Swingley scratch from the race due to a frozen cornea.. or something as simple as one of the girl dogs in heat so the boys don't pay attention to their job (that was Lance Mackey last year)... In 2005 Martin Buser had a "discussion" with his table saw about 2 weeks before the start of the race... and mid race, he was in so much pain that he had one of the vets (they have one at every check point) finish the job he started and cut off the tip of his finger... he finished 13th that year... can you BELIEVE he finished??? That would have been a good reason (in my book) to scratch!!! Marilla was one of the most loving, giving, caring people we knew. As chief RN instructor at CBC, she made sure her nurse trainees knew how to give the best care possible to their patients. Marilla volunteered for many church and civic activities, including Meals on Wheels and Hospice fund-raising. With all that has happened, it has been hard to keep up. So, I will start with this February lunch and I will just write an entry describing each one. We have had some new faces appear and I would really like to acknowledge them. This month we had a lot of fun and had some new faces that we were delighted to see. Hopefully they will return and be a part of our little gathering in the future. We also had some guests, with the youngest one being four months old. On his name tag, it did say, "Not a Future Bomber". We heartily welcomed him anyway and he was quite the draw. Those attending were Pat DORISS Trimble ('65); Joseph CHOATE ('60); Anita Choate (spouse - '60 Bradford, PA); Sue McELHANEY Stewart ('54); Betty McELHANEY Hudspeth ('57); Barbara ISAKSON Rau ('58); Fred KLUTE ('58); Marie RUPPERT Hartman ('63); Lorin St.JOHN ('55); Phyllis St.John (spouse - '70 Glacier Hi, Seattle); Glen ROSE ('58); Carol Rose (spouse - '62 Sunnyvale, CA); Derrith PERSONS Dean ('60wb); Deedee WILLOX Loiseau ('64); Margaret EHRIG Dunn ('61); Judy WILLOX ('61). These last four were our new attendees this month: Dennis "Grizzzz" BARR ('58); David THOMPSON ('60); Bill McKAY ('65); Charlotte CASE Kallio-McKay ('65). Our guests - compliments of Deedee WILLOX Loiseau ('64) were Christie Carlson (Guest - '91 Kennewick Lion); Alanna Carlson (Guest - '13 Gonzaga Prep); and David James Kuhn (Guest - 2030 who knows?). David is the youngest guest we have ever had, and was a delight. He is a very good baby. We are picking up speed with the lunches and are happy about that. We would love to see more and more new faces in the months to come. And we kind of celebrate the theme of the month. This month was Valentines' Day; next month comes St.Patrick's Day. This month Pat DORISS Trimble ('65) brought chocolate roses to us gals. And I am always handing out bumper stickers or something. We do have a lot of fun. I kinda knew better than to go but... won't be going again real soon... Watched a really fun show on one of the cable channels the other night... History of the Eagles. I remember years ago (probably '71 or so) going to a concert... they were the replacement for the replacement for the replacement 1st act at a Sly Stone concert... .Second act refused to go on till they KNEW Sly was in Las Vegas for sure... the Eagles sang their ten songs and the second act refused to go on... Don Henley asked if we would mind them playing their ten songs again as they were the only ones they knew... heck no we wouldn't mind and we didn't mind when they sang them twice more each... I think there was a run on their first album the next morning... I know I was there buying my copy... next time I saw them was "Hell Freezes Over" and have had the pleasure of seeing them a couple more times since... corse the faces had changed (except for Don and Glen) but the music was just as wonderful... The illustrious Mr. Knox ('65) sent me a picture of the finger he almost lost helping some poor old lady carry her basket... pretty gross so I won't share... He's doing a movie in Seattle then has another that starts shooting somewhere (sorry I forgot where) in July... I know the one in Seattle he plays his former girl-friend's son's grandfather... they auditioned for it at the same time (not planned... just happened)... the people at the audition were amazed at the connection between them... The approach to handling tank waste in 1977 was a little different. 250 ml bottles dipped into a million or 1/2 million gallon underground tank to sample its contents were placed into lead "pigs" about 2 inches thick. Some pigs used depleted uranium for shielding and were twice as heavy. The pig would arrive in a lidded stainless steel box bolted in the back of a pickup truck. It would back up to door 10 on the north side of the lab. The operator would take it out of the ss box and put it on the tailgate and we would take it from there and into about the middle of the decon room where a large open faced hood sat. R M's Dave Plummer or John Gile (deceased) would be in attendance so we could take the lid off the pig. A dose rate would be checked prior to lid removal. When the lid was removed two C P readings contact and 12" were taken. The C P would read about 1 to 2.5 rem at contact and on average two to 350 milli-rem at 12". What happens next could sometimes be adventurous. We decided to leave them in until Monday as there is still a small amount of drainage and she'd rather leave them in a little longer than pull them and then have fluid accumulate and it would need to be aspirated with a needle. On to the good news; the pathologist called while I was still there as they were changing my dressings. It seems she thought she took 6 lymph nodes with the tissue she removed and actuality she got 8 and all 8 are negative. Somewhat good news #2 - He also found a 3rd area of invasive cancer that if I had elected to do a lumpectomy it may not have been found since it wasn't seen on any of the imaging studies they did. She's going to talk with the radiologist who preformed my 2nd biopsy and see why it wasn't seen and if indeed it may not have been close to the other 2 we knew about. So my decision to just remove the entire breast was a wise one. I see the oncologist again 3 weeks post-op and see where I go from here. I'm looking long and hard about moving back to Richland and know I could get treatment there but it would be a matter of starting it here and transferring there or holding off and beginning it over there. The breast patient navigator said the oncologist will have all your information by then as the tumor board meets again 2 days before that so she will give you the best information she can. He had been a long term resident of the bay area in California and was residing in Walnut Creek at the time of his death. The sixties in Richland (and everywhere in the country for that matter) was the decade in which a large part of our generation came of age and great change was occurring. The music scene was obviously a big part of all that. Greg was a major player in the Tri-Cities live music culture and a huge contributor to it. He organized and led bands such as The Esquires, The Parrots, Grandaff, Lenore and Flesh for years and years. He sang, played guitar and drums. His bands were always booked and working mainly through his efforts and many fine local musicians honed their skills in bands Greg put together. He worked his talented rear end off for his music and his passion was a blessing to many, many of us who attended RTA dances at the old Community House, or CYO dances at Christ the King, or Battles of the Bands at the Richland Roller Rink, or RHS post-game mixers in the girls' gym, or homecomings, senior parties, etc. The first live band I ever saw was a performance by Greg’s Esquires in the compound behind Chief Jo for our eighth grade party. I couldn't imagine any activity so certain to ruin forever what little self esteem existed in the soul of an insecure 14-year-old than getting up in front of the entire class and singing... loudly... through a PA system. Well, Greg and his band totally nailed it, blew everybody away performing tunes like "Gloria", "Midnight Hour" and "House of the Rising Sun" and changed my perspective of the power of performance forever. Greg always had a band and that band was always working because of him. Greg was also a talented artist and created posters, band graphics and silk screened T-shirts. He even created custom band letterheads for booking and contract communications. Examples of his work exist in several of the RHS Columbian yearbooks from '66 – '69. I will miss Greg quite a lot but I will never forget him. He made an indelible impression on many and I'm sure that for those of us who were part of the music scene in '60s Richland, he will be remembered as talented, innovative, dedicated and part of the extended family which we comprised. RIP (Rock in Peace) Greg REITEN January 19th, 1950 – February 20th, 2013. -Jeff CURTIS ('69) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Gary SPANNER ('72) Re: Bomber Air Mattress availability in Seattle As you may have noticed in earlier posts and on the Bomber air mattress website, D.A Graphics has offered to sell the air mattresses out of their shop near the stadiums. Teams will leave the official re-start line in the same order as they left Anchorage the day before. Re: Jr. Iditarod There is a Junior Iditarod every year... held the Saturday and Sunday prior to the start of the Iditarod. There were 13 young mushers this year between 14 and 17 years of age. It's a 150 mile route. They start on Saturday and depart at two minute intervals (just like the big kids' Iditarod). They go from Knik to Yentna where they have a mandatory 10 hour lay over. Then they go from Yentna to Willow. Common report from the teens as they checked into Yentna Station for their mandatory 10 hour lay over was that they had a great run – the trail was excellent, their dogs were awesome and the weather was perfect. After the lay over and differential, they headed for the finish line Sunday morning. Noah Pereira of Clarkson, NY, is the 2013 Jr. Iditarod Champion. Noah has been training with Dallas Seavey (2012 Iditarod winner) since his December arrival in Alaska. Noah, Conway Seavey (Dallas' younger brother), and Jenny Greger raced for first place. Noah said "I left Yentna a few minutes after they did and caught up to them." Passing Jenny Greger, then Seavey, Pereira ran the last 10 miles with his team, kicking and poling across Willow Lake for the finish. Of his dogs, all Seavey dogs, Pereira says he was worn out running with them, but they, being used to running 600 miles, could have kept on going. I have said before that as a volunteer I used to fly parts of the route in my Piper Super Cub and about now I was getting that little crate ready for whatever the weather would bring. There is a lot of the Irod that you will never mix up for Honolulu (or Gretna) so being prepared for any event will either win you the race or better yet, save your life. The amount of time and effort from literally hundreds, if not thousands of volunteers is just amazing. All of the little communities along the route are getting ready for any team eventuality, dog issues, musher issues (how do you pee with all of those layers of clothes on?) and preparing for additional people associated with the race to arrive. People open their homes and stock their larders, no easy task out in the "bush" but they do it. I had some great Moose dinners out there as well as salmon meals from salted down barrels put up in the summer. Yum. The Piper Super Cub was not really "super" but it was one heck of a tough aircraft. Not the most comfortable seats, a little (or a lot) noisy, in need of heat a lot and not easy to get in and out of. It was a "tail-banger," that is to say that it rested on its two main wheels, which were over sized, and on its tail wheel but done right, you could lift that tail wheel and drive between New York and Chicago on the two main wheels without getting airborne. It was an amazing aircraft. To prep for the Irod, I would put in a small alcohol heater, and engine blanket, a spare tire, a little emergency food, and some other pilot safety stuff. Took the back seat out to haul dogs in need or cargo for the route. Took a box of TP one time and dropped rolls all along the route, sort of a "bombs away" moment. The advantage of the Super Cub was its landing and take off capabilities with a load, perfect for the race. I used to take a buddy and we would fly to some remote river around ANCAK (Anchorage, Alaska) and land on sandbars in the river. Make a couple of observation checks and if okay, take 'er down dude. Short landing and even shorter take off if we had a lot of fish. I once took a Nurse volunteer between two race route locations but when she first saw the Super Cub she said "No way." I had put the rear seat back in, cleaned out all of the dog hairs and Coke cans, washed the inside of the windows and hung a new pine scented air freshener, we are talking Super Cub First Class here, and then talked her in to flying with me to where she had to go. She loved it and eventually took flying lessons and bought her own Super Cub, which she took with her when she moved to Montana several years later. She would have been the perfect Super Cub wife but I was happily married, or nearly so, and she got away. This is sounding a lot like a David RIVERS' ('65) story isn't it. Sorry. I guess my point is this, and Maren can confirm it, that what you see and hear about the Irod is really due to the efforts of many, many volunteers all over the state. It just does not pop up one day but is planned and implemented over a long period of time. I am excited and will not miss any of Maren's reports. Re: Volunteers By the end of the 2012 Iditarod season there were approximately 1,200 volunteers representing 21 states and 4 countries donating over 35,000 hours of time! Re: Volunteer Vets With an average of approximately ten days dedicated to the race for each volunteer checkpoint trail veterinarians, over four- hundred days of veterinary professional time are donated by that group, alone. That doesn't even count the consultants, dropped dog veterinarians and other veterinary staff members serving in support roles, including fifteen veterinary technicians. In addition, the time and expense required for travel to and from their homes, adds substantially to the total value of the veterinary staff services. Although most are from the lower 48 states, veterinary volunteers came from as far away as Australia, France and Germany to be a part of Iditarod 2012. Certainly, travel costs can really add up in this day and age! Re: Volunteer Sled Holders Sled Holders are constantly running up to the start line with the teams, holding the sled until the musher and team leave the start and then running back to assist the next musher in line. Re: Volunteers in the Iditarod Phone Room The Phone Room has between 75 - 100 volunteers who take 4 hour shifts 24/7 for 3 weeks. These volunteers receive a variety of calls ranging from musher's families & handlers checking on their musher's Race status and/or dropped dogs, media & Race fans from around the world wanting a variety of information. One unique thing the Phone Room does is take "Musher Grams", messages of encouragement to the mushers. These messages are taken and then sent along the trail via the Iditarod Air Force or hand carried by volunteers going to checkpoints along the trail. Since the Internet has come into play, the Phone Room has downsized from 20 phones that were busy all of the time to 8 phones & computers that stay busy before and throughout the Race. The Phone Room also serves lunch, dinner, snacks & drinks to volunteers & Race staff 24 hrs/day. The Phone Room opens the Monday before Race day and stays open until the last musher crosses the finish line. Well let's get to it and wish HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Lola HEIDLEBLAUGH ('60) and Larry GROSS ('65) on your special day, February 28, 2013!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -David RIVERS ('65) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Jim HEIDLEBAUGH ('65) Sending Birthday Wishes to my sister Lola HEIDLEBAUGH Bowen ('60) Wishing you the Best Birthday!
