If you go take the Wallace-Kneeland off of (I think it is hiway 3) and it will come out next to Wal*Mart and we are between Wal*Mart and the High school. We go all out for this one. There is some of virtually everything we have in the magazines and it takes two days to set up with a large crew. There is always a big crowd as the show is always a big hit. The size and grandeur of the show is a not very well kept secret among the locals as the crowd keeps growing every year. "Happiness is the sky in bloom" -J. On a less important note, Ginger and I are leaving on a Mediterranean cruise in two weeks. We are boarding in Venice, then to Athens, Istanbul, Ephesus, Mykonas, Naples, Rome, Florence, Toulon and Barcelona. We are staying in Barcelona for a few days after our cruise to tour the city. We've done the touristy things in most of these countries already. Now this is not a real easy chore as I set the bar pretty high at the start and need to pace myself since she's only eighteen or at least she has the same energy she had 50 some years ago. I long ago conceded the fact that she's cooler than silver teeth, more fun than an "A Ticket" ride at Disneyland and the perfect hostess who keeps you up waaaaay tooooo laaaate 'cause she has another card game she wants to play. Happy Birthday to Carolyn ROE DeJong ('63), ain't no bigger fan than us except A.J., but he's family. Love you, girl. I remember as a Soph, back just a couple of years ago, I was totally enamored with the Bomber-babe environment I had stumbled in to that first morning at Col-Hi... Ricky WARFORD ('65) had me by the collar and was introducing a bunch of us to the upper- classperson Bomber-babes... I've told the story many time as still don't understand why I didn't know the babes from Chief Jo... it may very well be that I did but was just so caught up in all the glory it seems different over time... The b-day Bomber-babe's sis ('64) was one of those... as time has gone by I've become close to the B-day babe and her Big Kahuna ('63) and enjoy receiving email and cards from their numerous trips to the Islands... He and I knew we were on the same wave-length when we both knew "Eddie Would Go"... I remember blowing MADDY ('67) away one time in Huntington... when he showed me a plaque of a surfer on the street and wanted to know if I had any idea who the Kat was... I simply said: "Eddie would go"... Many of you may recall at R-2K when the old DI messed up half the reservations for the weekend... I always hit town on Thursday so I had been through the "your reservation is for next week... month... year" or whatever they were telling everyone... the day before... I was picking up my illugitumutt son's key for him so I'd have it when I picked him up... I'm afraid I was not any too kind to the girl at the desk to have to go through the BS again... I let her know in no uncertain terms that I had made the reservations at the same time and they were for THAT weekend... the B-day babe and her Kahuna were behind me... he looked the girl in the eye and said "What he said"... went quite smoothly for them as I recall... I have so many wonderful memories of those two and I'm always just thrilled to say: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Carolyn ROE ('63) on your special day, June 1, 2013!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am totally confused now as at last Club 40's reunion we had been told that the bomb was no longer to be recognized and dutifully retired it. Now I have new hopes that this is not the case and we can return to our roots and let the latecomers forget the Day's Pay Bomber as a symbol (which came way later). We expect to have MAYBE one day each in Sydney before and after the cruise. The dates are December 7 and December 22. Does anyone have suggestions about where to visit in one day? So far, we have heard about the zoo and opera house and something about the penal colony. I'd love to tour the Blue Mountains area, but doubt that we want to spend the extra day before the cruise, and after we will be eager to get home for Christmas. I've voiced my opinion many times and have been rebuffed by some Bombers who do not share my love for the one and only version of Louie Louie for the airwaves... (tho I give PR and the Raiders a high runner up... first met those guys when I lived in Camas for 15 minutes of my Jr year... crammed more fun into that 15 minutes than I can describe... nothing more fun than being a mystery kid from a "big" school in a little school and running with other mystery kids from big schools... we did and got away with more than we could ever have got away with in our own schools... my girlfriend was a rather well endowed young beach bunny from one of the beach cities (have long forgotten which one)... she drove my mother crazy!... reunited with them while Mark was still with them in Vegas, they always opened for the Righteous Brothers and I never missed Bill and Bobby so Paul would look and if Sarah was with me he'd march up to her and plop a three cornered hat on her head... she would just beam!), I really enjoyed the article Pitts ('63) shared the other day... that's what happens when the garage band from the wrong sida the river records a song without learning the rather simple words... they coulda asked Richard Berry with the Robins, Rockin' Robin or any number of others before pushing "record"... oh well... I won't get started on that again... honest... besides... I'm smarting just a tad from what I believe they call a sun burn... now I've only had one sun burn that I recall and I can't even remember the event so I guess it was pretty minor... I've never used sun screen so Thursday morning when I jumped into a little '27 Ford roadster for a trip to Manti, Utah for the yearly Rat Fink Reunion, I didn't even consider it... I've driven this car all over the west coast with no problem... But I've never driven an open car from 2000 feet to 7200 feet in the summer... luckily I had my leather helmet (WWI USMC flying helmet... I say USMC cuz I got it unused and since it says "USN"... and I'm the only one who ever wore it... it must be a Marine helmet rather than a squid helmet... makes sense to me), large goggles and one of those things skiers use to keep their ears warm sitting next to me... around here I just wear my rat fink wayfarers (one of the stripers in Manti puts a teeny tiny rat fink on each side of them for me)... well, when I hit 5000 feet I learned the meaning of cold and "wind burn"... tho I was able to put on my gear without stopping, when I went to bed my face, lips and hands were still tingling... I'm sure Mike SAM's ('65) Biker gang knows better than to do what I did... Hot Rodders may be stupid... but we're... stupid... it was in the 100's on the ride back and the sun block, chap stick, gloves, helmet and rat fink bandana didn't keep me totally out of harm's way, but they helped... I'll bet by now that kid from the class of '52 is rattling the windows with his snoring... Ok... OK... She passed away peacefully, early Saturday morning, June 1st, with her husband, Dr. Gary Johnson, by her side as well as her daughters Pam and Jennifer. The final obituary has not yet been finalized, but I will post it here when it has been completed. She is the first of our siblings to pass on; her brothers Mike ('60) (Seattle) and Steve ('69wb) ("Kelly" -- Richland) and myself ('77) (Puyallup) could never forget what an incredible sister she has been to us. A celebration of her life is planned for Tuesday, June 25th, from 4 to 7 pm at Hillcrest park Lodge in Mt. Vernon. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the National Alzheimer's Association or to the Lincoln Theatre in Mt. Vernon, WA. A personal thank-you to the many old friends and classmates who passed on their thoughts and good wishes to us since last year's class reunion, which Peg was unable to attend. And a special thank you to Grenada McCOY ('62), who made and sent to Peggy a very nice horse-pattern comforter last fall. She did indeed appreciate it and had it with her constantly. That touched us all more than you can imagine, Grenada, and she was wrapped in it when she passed. Thank you so much. Again, more details on the official obituary will be posted here soon. I have so many fond memories of being with Peggy over the years, from the pajama party sleepovers Jan NELSON ('62) used to arrange for us at her sister's house in Pasco... to her bleaching my hair silver for Carol RICE Forister's ('62) wedding in l964 (silver hair looked good on a 20 year old, now I dye it back to what I used to frost it to get away from)... to her driving me from Seattle for our 20 year reunion, which doesn't seem like it could of been so long ago, could it?... To more recent memories when I was able to finally get to see the tulips in bloom in Mt. Vernon, and visit Peggy's remarkable B&B cottage that faced the sound. (One time I drove over from Brewster, WA and ended up helping her clean the cottage for guests who were due to arrive.) and with Peggy, every get-together has a fun story to relate... I will miss her so much. I applaud you too, Grenada McCOY ('62), for making the quilt, while I've been wondering how to connect with her... I knew we were losing her to that awful disease, but it shocked me that we lost her so soon, but then sadly, it is best, as she didn't have a good prognosis... I'm so sorry, I won't be able to come to the services on June 25th, I will be there in my mind... Again my sympathies to the family, especially her husband who took such good care of her the years they have been together and appreciated Peggy, for the kind and loving person she was. The oncology office never did and I was glad she took the time to call me. It seems they found an incidental finding; a nodule on the right lobe of my thyroid. I had an ultrasound study of it on Tuesday. There is a very small nodule, think she said 9 mm and I need another study in 6-12 months. I was praying they wouldn't recommend a biopsy as that is all I would need. On another note; I've made Amtrak reservations for the end of the month to get over to Richland and look at possible places to live so I can get moved over there sooner rather than later. I'm sure my oncologist will release me after my last chemotherapy treatment next Monday as she knows I want to move. She will get me a referral with the clinic in Kennewick as it's in my insurance network. Anyone in the Tri-Cities know if Comcast is available there? As the Grateful Dead once sang, "What a long strange trip it’s been" - full of countless twists and turns, surprises, a few triumphs, and, probably like most of us, more disappointments and rejections than anyone should encounter. At the risk of being terribly self-indulgent, I would like to offer a reminiscence on these long years - the things I learned - most of them too late - and the things I never wanted to know. Perhaps you will see some of your own experiences here. Because this grew so lengthy, I have divided it into two parts. Today is Part I, and tomorrow, if I have not worn out my welcome and it doesn't slip my mind, I will submit Part II. PART I CAREER I never had a career. I've always envied, and still do, those lucky people who discovered a passion early on, made it their major in college, and went on to establish rewarding, happy careers as doctors, or scientists, or artists or whatever. I never had this. That didn't worry me when I graduated from WSU because military service - join or be drafted - was staring me in the face, and I knew I wouldn't be dealing with the civilian world any time soon (for four years, as it turned out). I figured that by the time I got out of the Air Force (as an E-5 Staff Sergeant, I'm proud to say), I would have my life's direction nailed down. Wrong. My career consisted of trying to survive in the work place, as I drifted from one temporary thing to another, seeking where I could fit in, searching desperately for a passion of my own. As the years went by, periodically I would look in the mirror and see a man who was older but no wiser. There was one particularly bad stretch where I felt the only reason I was still alive was that God wasn't through tormenting me yet; that perhaps I should look in the obituary to see if my name was there. Who was it that talked about men leading "lives of quiet desperation" (John Donne?). That was me. Life had become a sentence to be endured rather than a thrill to be lived. There were times I was on the verge of panic as I grew in years and saw my chances to reinvent myself diminishing. The primary reason? Like a lot of writers, I suffered from depression. Most of my adult life it was severe and untreated. I kept searching for a work environment that I would find fulfilling and make me happy, not realizing I wouldn't feel happy anywhere. It took me until age 55, with a lot of Rx drugs and a lot of counseling (highly recommended) to shake the depression and consciously come to grips with the fact that, for better or worse, I was born to write, and would never fit into those niches and cubicles I kept trying. To this day I wish I had used my GI Bill to pursue an MFA in creative writing. I knew I had a flair for writing from early childhood, but at that time couldn't never figure out how I to make a living at it. In that I was more prescient than I knew. Instead I spent my GI Bill returning to college for yet another degree, this time in professional portrait photography, a skill I learned well but didn't have a natural flair for. I didn't realize that in returning to school, I was also hiding out from the work place as long as I could. It was something I really didn't want to face. I was a professional wedding and portrait photographer off and on for about 18 years (and was very good at it), and then I let it go, for reasons space prohibits here. By this time I had about given up on achieving fulfillment in the work place, and was just trying to find a place I could hang on to and ride out the rest of my working life. My refuge in the end turned out to be working for the state. God bless government; they'll hire you when no one else will. That's where I've spent most of the last 33 years of my life. So I retire with a modest pension, but given all the turmoil depression laid on my working life, it's a miracle I have any pension at all. WORKING LIFE It has surprised me throughout my working life how rare good managers are. It's the old Peter Principle at work: people are promoted to their level of incompetence. Managers often seem to be former underlings who always followed the book; a toady to the system. For this they are rewarded with promotion to manager. But they too often don't seem to be evaluated for the ability to manage people, and that skill doesn't seem to be taught in managerial training. Quite the opposite; in Department of Motor Vehicles (my last job) first-level management training, they're taught to crack the whip. I've always wondered how it would feel to have one eye on your work and simultaneously the other eye on your workers. Is it painful? It has been amazing to me how many managers choose intimidation as a management style. Fear is never a good motivator. You might get people to tow the line, but they'll never respect you, and the good job they do will never be for you. It should be every manager's holy grail to earn the respect and admiration of their staff, so that when staff gives the job their all, when they go the extra mile, they're doing it in part for you. You have to earn that. How? Below are my 5 laws for good managers: 1. THOU SHALT NOT MICRO MANAGE. Of all the management sins, I hate this the most. There seems to be an assumption among some managers that their workers are errant children, prone to go astray without constant guidance, and incapable of performing properly without a manager's constant observation, or hand in every last detail. There is magic in allowing workers, to some extent, a free hand to do what they were hired to do. They are not children. Or if they are, your hiring screening needs work. 2 THOU SHALT NOT REGARD STAFF AS INCOMPETENT UNTIL PROVEN OTHERWISE. Your first assumption should not be that a new worker is no good. It should be the opposite. Assume competence until one proves otherwise with his or her performance. The good ones will respect you for it. 3. THOU SHALT NOT BE MORE CONCERNED FOR THE PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING OF YOUR CUSTOMERS THAN YOU ARE FOR THAT OF YOUR WORKERS. Scenario: A customer is angry and combative and your staffer is having a hard time coping, so you go to great lengths to comfort the customer: Yes, Mr. Smith, please allow me to fix this; Right away Mr. Smith, I'm sorry for the problem; and on and on. Then you take your worker in the back room and yell at them for their incompetence. Worker goes home that night distraught and wound up like a clock spring. NO MANAGER HAS THE RIGHT TO SEND A WORKER HOME WITH A KNOT IN THEIR STOMACH, OR IN TEARS. EVER. YOU DO NOT HAVE THAT RIGHT! THAT OLD LINE, "THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT" IS CRAP! IF THE CUSTOMER IS AN ABUSIVE JERK, SCREW 'EM! If I get a little carried away on this, it's because I experienced that knot a few times. I've always wanted a boss who had my back. Didn't always get them. 4. THOU SHALT NOT TREAT YOUR STAFF AS ROBOTS. If possible, allow them to personalize their work space; to create an environment that is pleasing to them. Give them freedom to perform their tasks in a manner that is most efficient for them. Consult with them as to how a new performance requirement or procedure affects them and their ability to perform at maximum capacity. People are not machines. Treating them as such will not yield good results. 5. THOU SHALT NOT WRITE A WORKER UP FOR EVERY INFRACTION. Some companies or government entities seem fond of this write-'em- up-for-everything system. The DMV does it. It is so wrong I find it hard to know where to start. For one thing, it fosters resentment among staff and creates a staff-versus-management furrow. Not writing people up at times but merely taking them aside in private and discussing their errors and how to correct them (in other words treating them like adults capable of acting on a word to the wise) will produce amazing returns down the road in terms of attitude and performance. The one manager who did that for me earned my undying loyalty. You can't buy that kind of loyalty, or demand it. Write-ups do little good to improve performance. Again, fear is a poor motivator. One manager admitted to me that write-ups are really for the purpose of laying a foundation for future punitive action by management if "necessary". Criticism should be constructive in nature; not a written punitive recitation of how you screwed up. In summary: managers, treat your workers as the human beings they are: flawed, but capable of great things in a supportive environment. Assume the best about them until they prove otherwise. Don't treat them like errant children. Choose your criticisms carefully, and make your remarks constructive. And if all of the above still doesn't produce results, examine your hiring processes, because you're hiring the wrong people. You screen for experience, but do you screen for evidence of maturity, responsibility, stability? I think you should. Earn the respect and admiration of your staff, foster a team spirit, and give workers some rein to do their best for you, and you'll have something very special. Here is the promised Part II of my Retirement reflections: It is going to be so strange to receive a pay check each month and not have to go to work to get it. Since I was old enough to push a lawnmower and mow the neighbors’ yards, I've been working for money. Later it was a morning newspaper route (remember the Columbia Basin News? Lousy paper). Then on to the pea harvest in Dayton for a couple of summers in high school. And after that... a long and winding road. But you know, I think I'll catch onto this pension stuff real quick. So, looking back from so far now, what have I learned? There is the matter of... stuff, and what to do with it all. Cherrie TEMPERO Scott ('64) and I were about 20 years behind our peers in most everything, and it took us a long time to catch up. Marriage at 39, children at 43, a house (finally) at about 58. The house thing went south when the housing market collapsed some years back, and we had to bail. We'll never be homeowners again, and as far as I'm concerned, that's a good thing. But we did manage to acquire a lot of stuff over the years, to the point that I finally one day said, "maybe there's too much of it." It took me a long time to learn that stuff doesn't bring happiness, because it took so long to acquire it. But there was a time when everything I owned in the world would fit inside my Dodge van. Sometimes I miss the simplicity of those days, the ability to pack up all I owned and hit the road if I had to. There is wisdom in simplicity. Another thing I've learned is that it doesn't pay to get mad at people. On the very few occasions I was ticked off and forgot that other people are just like me at heart—maybe having a bad day, or beset with personal problems, or not feeling well—I've regretted telling them just what I thought of their incompetence. It didn't make me feel better or vindicated; instead I felt like a jerk. I painfully learned my lesson there. It has become evident to me that we boomers grew up in a Golden Age in American history. We are so fortunate. At the end of WWII, America was the only significant world economy left standing. From 1946 to about 1973, American industry had no serious competition from abroad, provoking a long period of growth. A golden age of the economy ruled, with endless expansion, and with it all the prosperity that followed for most. We may never see its like again. Now we fear that our children will live less well than we. The future for them is full of apprehension and unpredictability. I hope I haven't seemed too self-indulgent in writing this and taking up all of this space on the Sandstorm pages. It is my wish that perhaps some of this might strike a familiar chord with your own experiences. Perhaps you shall be moved to comment on it. It's been a great pleasure to journey through life with my fellow Bombers, and I'm excited at the prospect of seeing some of you at the 50th reunion (OMG!) next year. Now, it's time to get started on those retirement projects—if I can remember where I put them. In the film version of Hermann Hesse's great novel Siddhartha, the title character at last comes to the final years of his life, whereupon he and his life-long friend Govinda have become two aged, poverty-stricken ferrymen pulling rope ferries across a small muddy river. Govinda says to him one day (I'm paraphrasing): "Siddartha, in search of happiness in your life, you've tried pleasures of the flesh, you've tried asceticism, you've tried wealth, you've tried poverty. What have you learned?" Siddhartha looks at him and says merely, "Be at peace, Govinda. Be at peace." May it be so for all of us. -Bill SCOTT ('64) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: The joke was on me The b-day Bomber-babe has left the building. In reading my Club 40 bulletin [The DustStorm] and checking my calendar I see Jackie and I will be in Sioux Falls (yes, for fireworks and meetings) and not able to attend Club 40 this year. However... if I can make contact with someone from the west side to carry them, I will raid my wine cellar for a couple of bottles for auction/door prizes or whatever goes on. Actually it is not a cellar but racks installed in a closet. But I have room for more then 120 bottles or so, that I have in there. I love to prowl the wine shops and even some grocery stores for the odd bottle or two overlooked at bargain prices. So I will donate at least one properly aged bottle from either France or Italy and another from the US. Jackie and I spent last weekend wandering about Mt. Baker in the North Cascades. Much conversation came to the conclusion that after 11 years off and on, we will be married before the end of the year. Probably in August. We both love fireworks (She has her own display company in Alaska) we travel both national and international, we have investments together and will probably start an import business together in the near future. Based on an idea we had some time back I have 2 binders full of a complete business plan for another business we may also start. And most importantly, we have finally made our peace with each other. Our lives together will be full. Alaska Airlines should love us as we are up and down Seattle/Anchorage frequently. As I write this she is packing to go north this afternoon as she has a 4th of July display for Wasilla. Our last 40 ft. container of fireworks from China will be at our warehouse tomorrow so we are fully stocked for this 4th of July. I will be doing the Umatilla "Landing Days" fireworks on the 22 of June. They are celebrating the landing of Lewis and Clark during their famous "Voyage of Discovery". Entertainment Fireworks will be presenting about 140 displays in the 5 NW states over the 4th. As previously mentioned we will welcome crew member Chuck LOLLIS ('64) to our Legends Casino and Yakima city displays. Chuck has already said he would not miss Umatilla. I will make my usual sojourn to Dutch Harbor, AK for the 4th. Each year when I leave "Dutch" and fly to Anchorage, Jackie and I take a couple of days to fly somewhere in Alaska. This year it is Nome. I have been a Elk for 37 years now at Tacoma lodge #174, and look forward to the opening of the new "Allenmore Event Center". It is so called as it will have the Pro Shop for Allenmore Golf Course (owned by Elks 174) and a fancy new restaurant overlooking the course in the building, It is a beautiful building of classic NW design with a great blend of stone and wood. The Elks will have a private area downstairs. There is also a very nice Pavilion close by that will great for a variety of events including weddings. Larry MATTINGLY ('60) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: growed ups and other sech nonsense I'm afraid the Senior Chief ('54) missed my point. Ya see... there is a huge difference between the honor and respectability of Bomber-babes and "ladies". I admire and respect Bomber-babes to the fullest. But in the vernacular of the young at heart and spechally when we was kids, a "lady" was someone older than we were that we didn't know. It was not so much a sign of respect as a a word chosen cuz we wuzn't sure what else to call her. She coulda been Clyde's Bonnie and we'da still called her a lady. Bomber-babe is a term of endearment which passes all understanding save in our tight knit little Bomber-group. Jest like getting growed up. Many of us were forced to "grow up" due to circumstances beyond our control. That don't mean we wuz growed up... just meant we hadda face real life on life's terms. I just finished driving a roadster 600 some miles in the middle of the summer. Ain't no grown up in his right mind would do that. My Pop sure wouldn't have done it. I can't wait to do it again and after almost two weeks I still can't get my lower lip to heal! I've made some very bad choices in life for which I will continue to pay the consequences for my choices. I drank my way outa the largest Law firm in Arizona and did the same from the largest in Nevada... the guys in Nevada actually paid me not to come to work. I hadda live with that shame or admit I was powerless over alcohol and that my life had become unmanageable. I don't think I've ever admitted that to any of you. But that is part growth and healing. I mean, hell, I want you guys to like me and think I'm an OK guy. I want some of you to be proud of me. Just something one must do in order to grow and mature. But if you think I'm a growd up ya gotta nuther think comin'! If anyone thinks that I don't have the greatest admiration for our Bomber-babes, I'm sorry to have given the wrong impression. Now that don't mean I don't get that itchy twitchy feelin' bout them... they got me rockin' and a reelin' (apologies to Bobby Hendricks fer stealin' his line)... I love the feeling of being among friends... Bomber friends regardless of age. This is all kind of interesting, as about 12-14 years ago I was driving around up there making some sales calls and stopped at Port Ludlow. They directed me to the "lady in charge" at the time and she assured me I need never call on Port Ludlow as all the old folks living there would not tolerate having fireworks. So I have steered clear of there when in the area. I heard some one in our office say we needed a pyro for a show in Port Ludlow and I said I'll do it. When asked why I would do a little show like that I said, "I have Bomber friends up there". The next question was "How can you have so many Bomber friends in so many places? How can you even know where they are?" When I explained the Alumni Sandstorm, Bomber Lunches, The Bomb, Club 40, and the like, Everybody just kind of shook their heads. Bob, these are some of the pieces of you that are pieces of me forever… --Making me your daughter, when you already had a family --Playing with your crew cut and letting it tickle me --Believing for years and years that crew-cuts and dads always went together --Teaching me to stay out of the street on Birch --Building us a whole houseful of doll furniture and the blue games table, which I thought was one of the cleverest things I had ever seen. Being my Santa Claus… --Hiking with me up the mighty FLAT TOP and the nearly insurmountable RATTLESNAKE --Watching you open the brown plastic wallet with the horsehead surrounded with "shiny diamonds" and saying in a totally sincere voice that "it was beautiful, a most special Christmas gift" and finding it several years later wrapped in tissue paper (still special) in the oak buffet. I bought it at Newberry's for $1.99 after deliberating for two hours. --Staring as you sharpened your straight razor with a two-foot leather strap and being amazed you never cut yourself. You let me sit on the edge of the pool for over a year until I was ready. --Teaching me to swim --Swimming miles and miles of breaststroke with me at the pool and in the Columbia River --Building the 'Doghouse' (his sailboat) and understanding much later why you couldn't call it the Cathouse (even though our cat Snooper, slept there all of the time) --Teaching me to sail, to lower the centerboard, to let out the jib, to tack and of course to "HEEL Toby! HEEL NOW"! --Feeling joy and freedom running with the wind and never wanting to go in, even when we were soaking wet and shivering. --Hot summer vacations in the 'a/c-less' Studebaker and '53 Oldsmobile, driving always to visit a mother who was never my mother --Yellowstone Park-Old Faithful, feeding the bears gingersnaps (surreptitiously) through the window while you were driving. I learned 'how to iron', on your handkerchiefs--always ready when we needed one, whether for magic tricks or wiping tears from bicycle scraped knees. --Your kindness to Gramma when she needed you --Lost car keys, forgotten suitcases, Cannon Beach and Uncle Ruben --Camping, fishing, building campfires, Lake Chelan, Mount Rainier, American River, Friday Harbor, the San Juan's. --Carrying me on your shoulders and not worrying about the blood covering you after a tree and I butted heads sledding on Col-Hi Hill --Asparagus picking, buckeye collecting and sharing your ice skates (stuffed in the toes with tissues) on frozen muddy ponds --Teaching me that I could be whatever I wanted to be, and that being a girl was not a limitation in life --Reading Scientific American with me, and helping me with the really long words. --Eating my one-inch high, 'scratch' Angelfood cake and saying it was delicious, as well as plasticized macaroons cooked on waxed paper instead of parchment paper, explaining to me why parchment and waxed paper are 'not the same'; --Father-Daughter banquets year after year --Dinner at the Desert Inn with Paige and me for our straight As You made me proud to be your daughter. --Spending hundreds of weekends on the islands --Hours of helping me with Algebra, Geometry and Trig. --Teaching me creative ways to look at things and solve problems --Helping me with science fair projects year after year --Teaching me to ski --Teaching me to drive and NEVER yelling even when the temptation must have been insurmountable --Telling me my 'natural' father was a nice, friendly, extroverted man that everyone liked --Offering to 'find him' for me if I ever needed to... I never did. --Hugging me, and saying, "Is that all?" after I told you I was pregnant. --Being proud of me and not disappointed --Visiting us in Bangkok, klong exploring, temple hopping and Pattaya --Laying flowers and lighting incense in front of the Erawan Buddha for you year after year to 'cover your bases', --Working on world population control and discovering all three of your daughters pregnant at the same time! --Having my daughter on your 58th birthday --Whidbey Island, building 257, impossible steps to the water, a typical 'Bob' thing to do... showing your creativity, the spark that makes you special and different, and always will. These are just a few of the pieces I have of you Bob, and I know you have pieces of me too. Our jigsaws will never be finished, one more piece is always missing…to be found perhaps tomorrow, the day after tomorrow or in the sunrise on the sand. You are part of me. I love you too. My husband and I were in St. Petersburg in 2004 and we attended a ballet at the castle that is also a museum that was built by Catherine the Great. I'd say be sure to attend a ballet, we went to a state ballet company of Swan Lake and it was beautiful. Also the art museum there was good. And we loved walking in Red Square in Moscow. We took an overnight train twice in Russia which was really an experience, but I don't know if you will have that kind of time... I'm sure many of the fellow Bomber travelers can give you lots of tips. I'd say go to the castle and the wonderful gardens in Copenhagen, which were closed when we were there in the dead of winter. Seeing the castles along the Rhine River which were all lit up at night when we were there is something I will always remember. If you are going to Austria, I'd also recommend going to the village of Stams for a wonderful tour of the monastery there where the Hapsburgs are buried... Beaver's ('65) wife, Jane has been handling the details. I'll be at the Marriott beginning Thursday (today as you read this)... Lyman ('65) is refling a game at some school I've never heard of Friday around 1:00 so I expect a bunch of us will go over and check out the boy's skills and yell: "Are you blind, ref... kill the ref... who the HE double toothpick taught you to ref??????" and other kind words of to show our appreciation... yes, girls, my illugitumutt son will be there for the weekend in case you need autographs (for your children of course)... dunno if he's bringing any 8x10 color photos suitable fer framin'... but he'll be there... gotta catch him between naps tho... hey what else is new... he's fine, he's just only hadda "on" and "off" switch all his life... ... Congrats to Donna BOWERS ('63) on almost 50 years (plus two) with the same guy... I been married a few years but not to the same chick... prolly cuz none wuz Bomber-babes... but I am looking forward to the '63 50th in September... got my fake ID ready to go... I put Jimbeaux's ('63) picture on it from the '63 year book... since nobody in attendance is gonna look like that I figured nobody would know... they'd just figure it was a bad face lift when they checked me out and compared with the picture... I mean who would recognize Kenny Rogers or Phyllis McGuire... right? Sorry again to the B-day kids for doing a nuther group hug... funny I hadda do one a the Bomber- babe's running mate the same way... She'll be fine with it since she's been celebrating since 6/15 already... Oh by the way, after next Friday, my Bridger Ave. address will no longer be any good along with my old phone number but my 702 375-6961 cell is still good for anybody who needs to find us this weekend and will continue to be good after that unless "retirement" is not kind to me and Verizon shuts it off... Sure hope to run in to a whole bunch of you this weekend... Roger GRESS ('61), if Terry and I miss you on Friday we'll catch you Saturday... I can't tell you how excited I get when I come home and I'm sure it doesn't show... so you'll hafta take my word for it... now where wuz I... oh yeah... b-days... It sounds like you've had a great life, and I wish you many, many more good years together. I haven't been to any of the intriguing stops on your upcoming tour and am a little jealous! But I do travel in nations further south and have found the internet to be a wealth of travel information, and consistently more up to date than all but the newest travel books. One site worth consulting when you travel to a new location is wikitravel.org (or, in your case, wikitravel.org/en/Belarus, wikitravel.org/en/Lithuania, and wikitravel.org/en/Poland). There are usually sections toward the end of sometimes lengthy entries entitled See, Do, Buy, Eat and so on that are usually brief, helpful and accurate. Also, you'll also meet fellow travelers along the way who will share their recommendations. Just beware of those well- intentioned folks who insist you must go to Restaurant X because it had the best food ever during their last visit in 1967! Just like in the U.S., owners, managers and chefs come and go, so places change. But that's part of the adventure! As I said, I cannot attend. I will give them to Chuck LOLLIS ('64) and trust he will pass them on to the right person. To give everybody time to think about having one of them, here is the write up I did about them. To: Club 40 Committee, for the annual gathering From: J. Larry MATTINGLY ('60) As promised I am donating 4 bottles of wine from my "cellar". I like to prowl the wine shops and even some grocery stores for the odd bottle or two and close out prices. I don't drink the heavy red wines as I don't get along well with the tannins. But I buy reds when I see a bargain and give them as gifts. So any info below about reds, is what I heard from those I gave bottles to. I store all my wines on their side. It might be a good idea to open the reds and let them breathe a bit before serving. · COLUMBIA VALLEY CABERNET FROM FRENCH CREEK CELLARS 1993 VINTAGE I bought a case of this wine at a close out sale from the winery in 1993. I put it down and did not open the case until Christmas 2003. While it might have been an unknown average wine when it was young, I am told it has aged well. My brother Mark ('77) said it was quite good, I had given Mark and Stacey a bottle for Christmas. As of now I have only one bottle left. · A TASTY MERLOT FROM REDWOOD CREEK WINERY 2004 VINTAGE I found 3 of these in a wine shop in San Francisco 5-6 years ago. I am told it is "a rather tasty Merlot". I thought they were priced too high and told the owner of the shop I would offer less and the amount and he said "sold". He admitted he knew nothing about the wine as he bought a dozen bottles at an estate sale. This is the last bottle. · ORVIETO CLASSICO FROM FONTANA CANDIDA IN ITALY 2009 VINTAGE This one I spotted in my local grocery store several months ago. There were 12-14 bottles so I bought 2 and opened one with my dinner. Yum Yum! Not fancy, but VERY drinkable. I immediately drove back to the store and bought the 4 remaining bottles. Then I drove across the city to another of the same small chain and found 3 more bottles. I gave one to my kindly neighbor who takes in my mail when I am on the road. No, I will not part with the remaining 2 bottles. Serve this one chilled. · A RED WINE, CRIANZA, >FROM THE LA MANCHA REGION IN SPAIN 2005 VINTAGE I was served a glass of this wine many years ago in Spain. For a red it was OK. But I switched to Chardonnay to the rest of the evening. I spotted it in my local grocery store and bought a couple of bottles. I gave one to my kindly neighbor (they are the kind of neighbor you always wished you had, so I try to take good care of them.) They said it was very good and seemed a little expensive to be giving away. So I took that as a compliment to the wine and next time in the store bought the remaining 2 bottles. I put them down for a year or so to see what age will do for them. I hope this helps a very good cause. "Happiness is the sky in bloom" -J. Landed Thursday after flyin' in with Ronnie (Big boy name "Ron") SLEDGE ('65) and his better half and ran over to Jimmie ADAIR's ('65-'67) ta pick up the '55 Chebby Gasser... ran it over to the DQ where I put fer sale signs and a list of the goodies which make it up on the windows... John CAMPBELL ('63) (and his better half... much better) pulled in along with Bill BLANKINGSHIP ('62) in his coupe sans wipers... the rain came and went... ran in to Roger GRESS ('61) and half of Richland... DAVIS ('65) finally pulled in from Seattle and we all began to wander... Ceci's new hip began to bother her so she sat in the Gasser and got many offers IF but only if she came with the car... I couldn't talk her in to it so no sales... I told her I'd be right back... David RIVERS ('65) saying he'll be right back when there are so many friends to see is not something one should bank on... outa sight outa mind as they say... someone finally reminded me I had left her inna car without telling her how ta work the doors... Ran into Bobby IRWIN ('62) and learned that he had just turned 70!... I think is was on the 18th but I need someone to confirm that. Talked to Jerry ('58) the next day and found he'll be 73 inna couple of months... how is this happening????... it finally got just a tad chilly for cut offs and t-shirts so off we went... Friday started with Spudnuts... how else does a Friday start off in Richland... now it was beginning to get nice and chilly with a great rain... started the Chebby and the gas pedal decided to go out so hadda get with Doc 40 (now Doc '54 with the San Antonio Rose in his possession) to save my bacon as he has so many times in our lives since we began as pals at 15 years of age (I finally figured out why I didn't know him before... he was in Ideeho before...) and went to some underground parts house and picked me up a new foot feed... varoom... he also decided to change the plugs... I think I have only put fresh plugs in that '55 once since I had the new exhaust run... after pulling the headers on the driver's side things got much easier... pretty soon a good bunch began to show up for the parade and we set up alla chairs so we could oooo and aaaah like we used to at the Bomber Bowl on the 4th of July... CAMPBELL soon got a little uneasy about being the only Senior inna buncha underclass people... I told him the DeJONGs ('63) would be along soon, but they got stuck in traffic... I think alla "young stuff" made him feel a little like being at a sock hop in '63... wait... there were all guys and only one or two girls... oh well whatever... after the parade we all headed to the back yard where Jack KEENEY ('65), Dick STEVENS ('66) and Jimmy HEIDLEBAUGH ('65) jammed about a possum inna head lights (ain't gonna hafta kill no chickens nor open no cans)... we finally broke up near midnight which was way late for this poor boy... Saturday more Spuddies and meeting a greeting friends... Chuck LOLLIS ('64) headed to do some fireworks but left me a little care package at my hotel... was sorry to miss him but enjoyed the care package as I always do! Tho Friday morning had been freezing, Saturday was cut off weather alla way. Louis HOGAN ('65) and Lyman ('65) hosted a BBQ... I made the mistake of sitting in Ceci's recliner at about 1:00 after all that sun (Alex CLARK ('65) showed me how ta make the foot rest go up) and woke up about 4:30 or so... time enough for showers and head over to Ruth Simpson's for the Saturday nite party which was another great get together... her daughter made some little pastries that were mouth watering... I ate them and ate them and they kept filling the plate so I ate some more! SIMPSON's ('65-RIP) plaque was not ready so no dedication. As his plaque is going to be larger than the others and as they hafta cut a round hole for the square plaques, a special vote must be taken on Steve's plaque... duh... it's for SIMPSON, nuff said... the ayes have it! Sunday it was breakfast with HEIDLEBAUGH and Ceci and then off to meet Ron and his wife for the trip back to Vegas... I'm sure I've forgotten about half of what took place and like I said... if I even mentioned half the kids we saw this would not be the great literary work I'm sure you will find it to be in its current form. It is a large and complex display but I have an exquisite crew up there that make my work easy. I design the display and send them the set-up notes and diagrams and all that is left is to fuse and load the shells. I fire the show electrically. I hope to get a good video of it this year. I have a wide angle lens that I finally have the adapter ring for. We are always in hopes for cooperation from the rather fractious Bering Sea weather. The display is always a big hit with the folks living in the middle of nowhere with little enough for entertainment. When I get back off island to Anchorage, Jackie and I are going to continue our exploration of Alaska. She is not going out to Dutch with me as she has her own J4 display to fire for Wasilla. Each year we fly to some place in Alaska for 2-3 days. We rent a car (or pickup if available) and take as many pictures as possible. This year it is Nome. We still have not decided exactly when, where, or how, but we are looking forward to our wedding. Probably in August. Jackie and I wish all Bombers and families a safe celebration of our nation's birthday. Since I never drink the day of a show I will just have hot dogs and diet coke at the "Picnic in the Park" after the annual J4 parade. Anybody or anything can be in the parade as long as it is wrapped in Red White and Blue. From toddlers on trikes to a concrete tuck. Old fashioned great fun. OK I will admit I stash a couple of cans of Bud Lite in a sink full of ice in my room at the hotel. But, by 1:30 - 2am when we get things secured, it's pretty quiet on the island. The ol' propeller beanie gives a well deserved tip to today's honoree. I won't dabble about anymore. I will just tip the beanie and wish Jeanette DUNCAN ('54, and a Bomber Babe) a very happy birthday. Do convince that tightwad you married to take somewhere other than Taco Bell or McDonald's for your dinner tonight. To: Don Sorenson (NAB) Nice trip to the past. I just wonder if that back door to a pre-fab was an approved modification. As I recall, that was usually the first thing the new homeowners did when the pre-fabs were sold. -Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ Mount Angel, OR where preparations are underway for the 4th of July Parade. I will email Carole JOHNSTON Berg who doesn't read the Sandstorm, as she knows and sees the BOSSO twins all the time and can tell us which is which...
