When I was a kid you got a sore throat, and you had three kinds of cough drops to choose from, Smith Brothers (they of the beards) Wild Cherry, Black Licorice and Luden's Horehound Menthol. Pretty easy squeezee choices. Today, having contacted the cold they were saving for Judas, I was confronted with no fewer than nineteen options on the board at Fred Meyer. I've "postulated" that there are considerable other options in the Natural Herbs and Medicines Department of Mr. Meyer's Emporium, but didn't feel sufficiently motivated to investigate. They all cost like four bucks, which is probably 4000% of William and Andrew's offerings of 1958. There was probably a dozen Ricola choices, all of which I passed on because they had not been dry hopped, aged in oak or breathed on by Virgins. I don't think we could buy lozenges at other than Thrifty Drug or mercantiles of that ilk. At Fred Meyer you can get Baby Wipes, Shot Gun Shells, Dog De-Worming capsules and Easter Candy all on aisle 18. When did it all change? -jimbeaux -Jim HAMILTON ('63) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Carol CONVERSE Maurer (Magic Class of '64) Re: The Mattingly Wedding Congratulations on your wedding, Larry ('60) and Jackie!! They don't work very well, IF you let the cold "get ya". *grin* Also another good remedy is Zicam. An old remedy is Vick's VapoRub, on the bottom of your feet, then put socks on, and go to bed! I know, it sounds weird, but it really does work... also rubbing Vicks' on your chest. my grandmother would rub it on our feet when we'd get a cold and my youngest daughter has always put it on her son's feet, when he'd get a cold... it's even been on the internet and Face Book, and you know they can't put anything on the internet that isn't true. The Bride (Pam HUNT Cadd ('66)) and Groom (lucky me), Best Man (Gary BUSH ('66)) and Maid of Honor (Peg WELLMAN Johnson ('66)) almost didn't make it home from Pullman for the wedding. (We did miss the rehearsal.) The day of the wedding all the roads in Eastern Washington were closed. Our honeymoon was supposed to be in Spokane, but we didn't make it any farther than Pasco. I don't know how snow compares with rain in predicting marriage longevity, but we've made it 44 years so far with no end in sight. It was some 56 years ago today that "Leave It To Beaver" aired for the first time. Villages remind me of 1920s, mostly dirt roads, but Moscow w/it's mostly new cars and 4 turn lanes in downtown is just short of surreal. Our Double Secret Probation is still being enforced, but we will again muster at 10am on Saturday the 7th of December at River's Edge Restaurant on the grounds of the Tumwater Golf Course in Olympia. As per tradition we will start with the Fred SCHAFER Memorial Group Grope and most - if not all - of the new business will be old business. Frank WHITESIDE's annual plea bargain for not attending, while not yet received, has been accepted. Put it down in ink and we'll see you before you know it. There are two more Saturdays to take the Grandkids to have French Toast with Santa, so that one won't work this year. They were amazed at how I looked including the doctor and I even got a few hugs. Now I know my hair is definitely coming back as they made the comment about how much it had grown since they first saw me the end of June when I had my consultation to see if I needed radiation or not. It hasn't been touched since early June except to remove a few long hairs over the ears and the back of my neck. I'm thinking it's about where it was before I started losing it, 13 days after my first chemotherapy treatment in April. I will get a picture taken some time late this month or early next month to put on a Christmas card so family and friends can see the "new me". The only difference is the hair is basically white and has some curl to it. The 3 pictures I sent into the Sandstorm last spring were on a card I had made for my new address. http://AlumniSandstorm.com/htm2013/Xtra/Ava/130511-Hair.jpg I still have 2 doctor appointment in December and my yearly mammogram (right side only) a few weeks before those appointments. Our Double Secret Probation is still being enforced, but we will again muster at 10am on Saturday the 7th of December at River's Edge Restaurant on the grounds of the Tumwater Golf Course in Olympia. As per tradition we will start with the Fred SCHAFER Memorial Group Grope and most if not all of the new business will be old business. Frank WHITESIDE's annual plea bargain for not attending, while not yet received, has been accepted. Put it down ink and we'll see you before you know it. The results were that L1-3-5 (lumbar vertebrae) had "moderate to severe arthritic degeneration". The advice from the doctor was to stop lifting anything more then 10 pounds or invest in a good wheelchair. I was also told not to jog, run, or hike with a back pack. The rest of the story was that my knees were badly worn also and should be replaced. Additionally I was not to use my climbing spikes going up trees and poles hanging various fireworks apparatus. There are several forms of danger in loosing the use of a knee 40-60 feet off the ground on climbing spikes. Ok... so I stopped climbing and cut back on lifting and began to think about what was I going to do. Watching the office manager of my fireworks company go through near torture in a knee joint replacement was scary to say the least. Months of being disabled, and now 2 years later she still has pains and limited use. Stephanie DAWSON Janicek ('60) and husband, George, hosted Jackie and I for several hours in their home recently and along with catching up on news of families, she told me about the Zimmer process. Small incision and inserting a plate that she has in her knees works well and it quite satisfactory after several years. I admit to being a bit of a coward thinking about surgery on my knees. but a few months ago facing increasing pains in the knees I started looking for a surgeon. I searched the far recesses of the internet gathering info on candidates. I finally settled on what seemed a rather obscure orthopedic surgeon at Mason Hospital in Shelton, WA. Facing Dr. Fredrick Davis in the exam room I found a very affable guy with a genuine happy face. He asked what brought me to Shelton and I said I checked him out and decided I was going to trust him to keep me walking for a few more years. He asked if I ever did fireworks at a certain harbor and I said yes and asked if that was that where he kept his sailboat. He asked how I knew he had a boat. I said "I did really check you out." He laughed and sat on a little stool and rolled over to my chair and said "Put your leg up on mine." I had worn shorts for convenience and he thought that was cool. He asked me what I wanted him to do and I said "Whatever needs to be done with minimal cutting preferred." He replied that cutting my knees would only be done as a last resort. He turned on a large screen on an "arm" and brought up my xrays from that AM. He then asked me which one I thought looked worse. I pointed to the right one that was bone on bone. But the left one is the one that hurts to move. He said he could take away the pain in 5 minutes. He proceeded to stick a needle in the side of my knee and extracted about 50 CC of "water" that was causing the pain. Using the same needle he injected some kind of lubricant. He said "Walk around outside a few minutes while I take care of another patient and we will discuss your knees." I will have an MRI Monday on my left knee as he feels I have a torn meniscus that he can repair by scope in 30-40 minutes. He then said that knee is not a candidate for Zimmer or any other kind of appliance. He said "Let's get that left knee under control and useful before worrying about the right one." Then he brought out a full sized model of a knee joint with the NEW style Zimmer installed. Only if all else fails will we cut into you knee and install the device. He described the operation as making a 3D MRI of your knee and making a perfectly matched Zimmer that take about a hour and 30 to 45 minutes to install in the bone of your knee with one 3-inch incision. But we are going to try a new series of injections in my right knee first. 5 injections 2 weeks apart. They have found a way to manufacture the actual fluid in knees and can now replace it and fix many knee problems without surgery. Now here is the incredible part of the story. Later that day I was watching FOX National News and there was Dr. Fredrick Davis in the same exam room I had been in, explaining his part in the development of this new Zimmer insert, requiring minimally invasive surgery, to the TV interviewer! So I am feeling a sense of relief and confidence in my ability to walk in the future. And I can now go upstairs normally without dragging my left leg. -J. I want to thank Larry MATTINGLY ('60) for his careful information about the knee treatments. As a long time athlete I have had knee pain in the recent years and do not run or play tennis anymore, dance only infrequently. I was told in 2005 that my choice was complete knee replacement. Not liking that idea I cut back on loved activities yet still doing them. Cutting back meant weight sneaked on. After a dance foot injury side lined me again I took up hot yoga (not Bikram) and over a 2-3 year period reduced swelling and pain significantly. I am still with it. I ultimately lost some middle age weight (15 or so pounds) and my knees do not hurt and I can do longer yoga holds, climb stairs at Green Lake which were impossible in my eyes. Camelot had nothing on us... and we know what the simple folk do, they love one another to pieces. Some of us share our grief, pain and fears easily and some keep them to themselves or share them with a very select few. I became close to this Bomber because he was close to a Bomber-babe I love and cherish. He had his doubts about me at the beginning, as I am a lower-classman. I am always amazed at how my friends I ran with in school know so many kids I never met or never got to know. Part of it is the fact that when I went to the Marine Corps I only returned for a short visit after boot camp and then stayed away from my home for 20 years for some unknown reason. I think I wanted to "be somebody" before I returned. I didn't know the much loved Bomber-babe until I happened to be in the wrong place and the right time and her best Bomber-babe friend (with whom I'd been madly in love since 7th grade) yelled at me for being there. I have not met my dear friend face to face to this day, but have come to love and admire him as a brother... in fact we are brothers, we share a similar ethnic heritage, we are Bombers and we are Viet-vets... how much closer can ya get? So it is possible I could end up getting thrown in the river or made to sleep in the cold in Oly in December for sending this post. I think it is much more likely that Bombers and Bomber-vets will respond and give this guy their love and prayers as I do here. They told us the shorter, steeper trail was closed for repairs. I befriended a nice lady who is just starting out with her radiation treatments so neither one of us knew if we'd get all the way to the top to release our balloons. Come to find out she's a Richland Bomber class of '74 and I think she said she now lives in Benton City (if you read this. email me please as I never caught your name). Well, we both decided after several stops to rest a bit, we were going to make it all the way up. We hardly ran into others with pink balloons and wondered if, indeed, the other trail was open after all. When we got to the top, one of the doctors and others from the clinic were there to greet us with water and apples. They took a picture of each of us with a very large pink balloon display fastened with a tether. I also got them to take one of me with my camera and I ended up with 3, don't think they thought my camera was working as I had issues earlier with batteries but thankfully a had several spare ones with me. They told us the environmental people nixed the balloon release at the top as planned. They had however purchased biodegradable balloons and string. We each wrote something on our balloon and with the doctor looking the other way we released our balloons (shh it's a secret). They told us the other trail actually was open and even though it's steeper we went down that way. About halfway down every time I'd step on my right foot it felt like my big toe was going through my shoe. I got home and took off my shoe and sock and found a large hematoma under my big toe nail. I thought I best have it checked especially with the cancer diagnosis. I went to a clinic and the doctor used a probe and got most of the blood out but as he was doing so he noticed the nail was pushed halfway back. He elected to remove the entire toenail and said I had runner's toe which I had heard of. I was lucky I guess as only the one toe was affected. He put some antibiotic cream on it and showed me how to change the dressing and what to look for in case any infection sets in. He also said it may be a year before the nail comes back totally. A word to the wise. He asked me when my last tetanus shot was and I told him '05. I guess starting in '06 they started adding the whooping cough vaccine to the tetanus one so if you haven't had one since '06 perhaps it's time you update your shot. -Betti AVANT ('69) ~ Richland ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for today. Upon my arrival in the Republic of Viet Nam, after being nearly brought to my knees by the heat and smells, I swore I would never again take one of what was rumored to be Lady Bird's DC-8s. That is until 42 years ago tomorrow, when in Cam Ranh Bay, my name came up on the Freedom Bird board for a Seaboard World Airlines flight back to the World. After passing the newly imposed "departure test", this time I couldn't board fast enough. The wheels came up, we sang "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and some of us wept. Not so much for ourselves, but for those who looked forward to but never knew that feeling of relief. I have often thought about what I took to Viet Nam and didn't bring back as well as what I didn't take but brought home. About the results of my time in country and the effect it has had on other people's lives. And finally who might I have been had I never gone. On my last assignment before retirement from the Air Force, I worked for a POW that was in that bunch that was released in 1972, Col. Willard Gideon. He was shot down over North Vietnam in 1966 and was a POW at the Hanoi Hilton until his release in 1972... I was looking for him in the video but didn't see him. He was such a nice person, not at all like some of the other officers I'd worked for... see the link below. As it turns out, when I retired from the Air Force, I went to work at EDS Corporation and my recruiter was very familiar with Ross Perot's desire to help veterans. So, when I flew to Dallas for my final interviews my recruiter said "I want to show you something." He took me to the seventh floor of the EDS building where Ross Perot had his office and just outside of the office was a huge painting of a Vietnam pilot, signed by many of the POWS and to the left of the pilot's head was the signature "Will Gideon". I was so impressed and have always looked fondly at Ross Perot for his desire to help vets... like Col. They were a large heavy 4 drawer file with one drawer having a combination lock. They had a good fire resistance time also. There must have been hundreds of them in surplus as things closed up. Does anybody know if there are any for sale anywhere? We would like one for personal papers in our house. The only good buys on safes in Seattle-Tacoma areas are gun safes. Regular file safes and other useful sizes and configurations with any kind of fire protection time are all well over $1000. Yes there are small safes available at reasonable but the fire time is short and if you don't anchor them in concrete the thieves just carry them off. Re: Interesting side tale about a safe What seems like eons back in time... I was a manager for SRO Theaters at the time. Late one night a large truck with Acme Safe Company on the side, parked on the sidewalk in front of one of Seattle's largest theaters. "Love Story" was on if I remember right and the safe was full of $. The "Acme" crew in grey coveralls with the name on the back, was lowering the safe down the stairs from the office and it got away from them and crashed through a glass door. But they boarded it up solidly with plywood and loaded the safe into the truck, and disappeared. Police did see the truck but thought all was OK as that kind of moving work is often done at night in busy downtown areas. The "perps" were never caught. However... months later two young boys playing near a cliff that they should not have been close to... spotted a safe in a ravine. It was identified as the safe from the theater. It had been beaten, drilled, and torched. Officials decided it was not worth getting a crane to haul it out of there and started to leave when one of the boys asked what about the money in the safe? The officials said the money is long gone from that safe. The small boy said no it isn't, look. With that he stuck a small stick in a hole and wiggled it and opened the door. If nothing else the old magnesium ball shaped safes were near impossible to get into. The money was intact. The boys and their families got lifetime passes to SRO theaters. We were in port in Subic Bay, Philippines when the first group of POWs landed at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. Many of the squadron pilots went to Clark Air Force Base to see if any of the POWs were MIDWAY pilots that had been shot down during the war. There were one or two POWs that were from the MIDWAY and it was the talk of the ship during our return to the San Francisco Bay area. He showed up at our lunch Friday (10/18/13) to celebrate "his" birthday. His way of celebrating was to buy everyone's lunch!!! Thank you, Lefty!!!!! From all of us!! Some ladies couldn't be there, but will take a "rain check"!!' Jim MEFFORD came with his wife, Jeanette DUNCAN ('54) and got in on the deal! Everyone keep Marguerite GROFF Tompkins ('54) in your thoughts and prayers, as she is not doing well. In hospital for a couple days with bladder infection, and as some of you know she is suffering with Alzheimer's, so she gets upset easily. Thanks to her daughter, Pam TOMPKINS ('74), who lives with her, she is being well taken care of at home. To: Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) Have meant to thank you, too for always mentioning date of our ladies '54 lunch a few days before. Can you believe, I forgot this last one, but made it in time, 30 minutes late, to have a sundae for dessert, since Lefty was buying!!! Appreciate!!! To: 1954 Classmates 2014 is our 60 year class reunion as I'm sure you all are thinking about!! Any local classmates who are interested in starting our planning, please contact me or Jim MEFFORD ('54) so we can get some meetings set up to collect ideas and make our reservations wherever we are going to celebrate!! Never too late to plan ahead!!! Call me or e-mail me or Jim. Let's plan a fun reunion!!!! btw... I will do another bio booklet if it's what everyone would like. At least I would like to do one with everyone's up-to-date name, address and contact information. So that can be sent to me and I will get started!! Hope everyone is in sturdy health to be able to travel next September for this BIG SIX OOOOO!!! Thanks. -Marilynn WORKING Highstreet ('54) ~ Pasco where it is freezing at night but so pretty and sunny in the daytime. Nice fall weather in 50s!! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) I would be remiss in not tipping the ol' propeller beanie in honor of a senior Bomber Birthday. He is a gentleman know quite well by many generations of Bombers. Heck, I even went to school with his younger brother (although not in the same graduating class). So, let's have three hearty cheers and a Happy Birthday for Rex DAVIS ('49). Keep on keepin' on, Rex. -Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ Mount Angel, OR where the battle of the falling leaves continues **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Ernie TRUJILLO ('59) To: Helen CROSS Kirk ('62) Re: Pat Trujillo No, Helen, she's not a relative that I know of :) I've seen a Patricia Trujillo on one of my Facebook genealogy groups that I belong to but I never knew her in High School so have never communicated with her. I always wondered if we might be related... I'll send her a message. -Ernie TRUJILLO ('59) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: Two Good Buds We gots us some b-day guys spanning quite a bitta time, both of whom I consider good friends... Each of these Bombers has very distinctive characteristics and can be spotted by them at a distance... the younger of the two had a fantastic sense of humor and wore these great Buddy Holly glasses... the elder of the two looks like the younger of the two and that is NOT a commentary on the younger's looks... the elder looks younger than most of us... he never ages... I am pretty darned convinced he has a portrait of himself hidden somewhere and someday I mean to find it! I spent hours of fun with the younger during our school years, but am pretty sure I only knew the elder from seeing him around here and there... we certainly never had a class together and I don't think I ever had a class from him... I recall my PE teacher quite clearly and can still hear two comments he made to me as though they were yesterday...: In third grade it was: "David Rivers, you are the slowest human being on the face of the earth."... a true statement... and the other always was uttered as I walked in to Hi-Spot my Jr and Sr years...: "OUT!" Ah, the trials and tribulations of youth... I sure hope these two Nevada Day guys enjoy their day so HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Rex DAVIS ('49) and Bobbie "Tuna" MATTSON ('64) on your special day, October 31, 2013!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -David RIVERS ('65) ******************************************* ******************************************* That's it for the month.
