[10/3/14] It pains me to see "no entries" in the Alumni Sandstorm. There is so much to "talk about". We are in the process of moving back to Richland - I left in January, 1952... just bought a home here we expect to occupy in 10-14 days or so. At lunch today [10/4] I joined the "old timers" group whom gather weekly.- mostly '52 folks - but a few of the "younger crowd" from the mid '50s also attend. We talked of the past - of Garmo's Grocery, Diamond Variety Store, of Col-Hi Bombers who went off to the Air Force - Navy - Marines - Coast Guard (Bill Tracy ('51) and I went to USCG boot camp together spring '52)... of those who stayed and watched the area change. This area has become fascinating... grapes, orchards, wineries. The biggest cold storage plant in the U.S. is under construction.. theaters, parks, shopping centers, maybe 125,000 folks living in the Tri Cities now. West Richland is a bonafide city - parks and all. Richland has spread south into the hills... Still a lot of government-funded presence, but not like the '40s through the '70s. Site cleanup is the "big thing" the government pays for, but there is high-tech R&D stuff going on as well... North Richland, once a trailer park and Army barracks, is now a high tech area with broad streets, manicured lawns, stately trees... nicely constructed permanent buildings... Col-Hi (aka Richland Hi) looks modern... Fran Rish Stadium is right where it was before it got named for our legendary coach of the early/mid '50s. I could ramble on, but the area has a new fascination for me... It isn't like the place I left over 60 years ago! -Dick WIGHT ('52) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) Seems there has been a dearth of entries lately. Or at least, very terse entries. Probably because we haven't heard from the Junior Gyrene, which may be a blessing. At any rate, I trust this will get through and be published on the proper date. The reason for the proper date is that a fellow classmate and Bomber Babe is celebrating her 22nd Birthday. This is important, as she hopes to be carded for the first time and can have a private chuckle about it. Therefore a tip of the ol' propeller beanie is in order, along with a hearty "Happy Birthday!" cheer for Jan BONDURANT ('54). Keep on keeping on. -Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ Mount Angel, OR where fall is pleasant thus fat. **************************************************************** **************************************************************** That's it for today.
