I guess I'm holding up fairly well in appearance... considering I'm 76. I just kinda thought an old missionary wouldn't be a "Babe". We are a smidge different than most. To: David RIVERS ('65) You're right. You won't ever "catch up" in age! -Ann BISHOP Ousley ( '56) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Dave HANTHORN ('63) To: Bill SCOTT ('64), Betti AVANT ('69). And Brad UPTON ('71) Re: The Big Nine Sheeesh! (as Mr. Juricich used to say when someone managed to put the safe-driving car into somebody's front lawn) Where is Roger FISHBACK (‘62) when you need him. Guess it's up to me to try to straighten things out for the younger kids. So pay attention, I'm only gonna do this once! In 1963 (which, besides being the Gold Medal Class year, was the last year of the “big school” 16 team State Tourney) the Big Nine schools were Richland, Kennewick, Pasco, Sunnyside, Toppenish, Wapato, Davis, Eisenhower, and Ellensburg. The district playoffs were held at Eisenhower in Yakima, and in the District Championship game the Bombers beat Ellensburg 103-59 and went on to the State Tournament at Hec Edmondson Pavilion in Seattle where they finished third in the State Tourney. There were no “Regional” playoffs in those days, teams went straight to State from their District tourneys, so no games involving the Bombers were played in Spokane at the end of the season. In 1964, The WIAA "crippled" the State Tourney and instituted the "Regional" playoff system. The Big Nine remained the same as before, and once again the Bombers won the District Tourney. They then advanced to the "Regionals" in Spokane, which they won, then went on to the "shrunken" State Tournament in Seattle at the Seattle Center, where they once again finished third in the State. In 1965, they changed the league to The Big Six (Walla Walla, Kennewick, Pasco, Richland, Davis, and Eisenhower) The Bombers lost out in the District Tourney and didn't make it to the "Regionals" in Spokane or to State in Seattle. In the ensuing years until present the "big school" league in the Yakima Valley has undergone many name changes and membership changes, and even has been two separate leagues the past few years. If ya need any details about that, ask Roger!! Bomber Cheers, -Dave HANTHORN (Gold Medal Class of '63) ~ from a wet and cool Mercer Island, where the rainy season is upon us and we may not see the sun again for months!! **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Betti AVANT ('69) Re: Big 8 It seems too that Moses Lake and Wenatchee only joined in the fall of '66 but may be wrong with that. It was the Big 6 up to that point. We did play schools like Ellensburg and Sunnyside when it came to the playoffs before regionals in Spokane. {...read Hanthorn's ('63) entry this issue. -Maren] -Betti AVANT ('69) ~ Richland **************************************************************** **************************************************************** >>From: Mike HOGAN and Lori SIMPSON Hogan ('70) Re: Irene WALDNER Russell ('69) question about the Big Nine We looked through the 1968 to 1970 Columbians and there were only 8 teams. The big nine must have started in 1972 and included Kamiakin. {...read Hanthorn's ('63) entry this issue. -Maren] -Mike HOGAN and Lori SIMPSON Hogan ('70) **************************************************************** **************************************************************** Bomber Memorial >>Mike FURNER ~ Class of 1968 ~ 1950 - 2014 Bomber Memorials **************************************************************** **************************************************************** That's it for today.
