I trust you all have had a wonderful Presidents' Day. I remember
back in the day there at least three celebrations in February:
Lincoln's birthday on the 12th, Valentine's day on the 14th and no
school on the 22nd (at least in the State of Washington) - wonder
if they still do that. And now we come to "Fat Tuesday" or Mardi
Gras as it is known in some quarters. Around here and in Bavaria,
its called Fasching and in Rio its known as Carnivalle. Just brace
yourselves for Lent.

In other places it is known as Curt DONAHUE's ('53) birthday. So, a
tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a hearty "Happy Birthday!" to
an old chum. I wouldn't call either of us disciples of Cousin Ben,
but I do believe we were in that orbit at different times.

is no rain in sight, nor snow in the mountains until at least
      the end of the month.

We are returning to ice and snow, after our fun Florida vacation.

I've attached a few photos. one is of me with Joy Hendrix Wilson
who I met at CUP Koinonians in 1963 when I returned from being an
exchange student in Holland. We really enjoyed being in Florida,
are already thinking of coming back next year.

I know the Smyth kids will love their Florida reunion next week

Re: 2015 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race XLII (#42)
  http://www.iditarod.com/ - Official Iditarod Site

EVERYBODY READY???

Lack of snow has forced the official restart of the 2015 Iditarod
to Fairbanks. Since the ceremonial start is in Anchorage on March
7th, everyone needs an extra day to get to Fairbanks for the
restart on Monday, March 9th.

What NORMALLY happens is the ceremonial start is the first Saturday
in March... (this year March 7th) then the official re-start the
following day (Sunday). HOWEVER, the Iditarod trail Committee has
moved the re-start to Fairbanks after concluding that there isn't
enough snow on the traditional route this year to maintain safety
for mushers and dogs.

The 2015 route is 979 miles.
The traditional Southern Route (odd years) is 998 miles.
The traditional Northern Route (even years) is 975 miles.

Mushers draw for starting position on March 5, 2015.

Two reasons why I love this race:

1) 4 time Iditarod Champ Jeff King Speaks from the Heart
http://iditarod.com/jeff-king-speaks-from-the-heart/
about his ordeal (and eventual scratch) from the 2014 Iditarod

2) King's 2014 helmet cam footage thru Dalzell Gorge
Gale WALDKOETTER Skaugstad ('72) sent it to her mom,
Doreen HALLENBECK Waldkoetter ('51) who submitted to the SS:

Re: David TAMPIEN ('58-RIP)

It is with sad heart that I tell you that my brother David passed
away Sunday morning, 2/15. David had been diagnosed with pancreatic
cancer in October. He didn't want to go through chemo therapy and
radiation, so he fought it with faith and letting nature take its
own path.

There will be a memorial service in Moses Lake, WA on Saturday,
February 28th. When the final arrangements are made, I will pass
those on.

Re: One a them dayz

Been one a them dayz where I started out great guns and then just
petered out into a nice nap... dunno why some dayz are just like
that... I mean it ain't like I just laid on my butt all day...
hmmmmm well maybe part of the day but not all day... watched a
great movie about the Court Martial of Jackie Robinson last
night... had no idea... ah ha... and there's the reason... when I
go to bed way after mid-night I tend to be a bit lethargic the next
day... and got up at 5 a.m. and went to donuts Saturday, stayed up
late and stayed up late last night too... ahhhhhh I'm not good
fer nuthin' and lazy after all... dang if only my dad could hear
that... today's B-day guy comes from the class of '57... now I
gotta say... the class of '57 musta been a great time to grow up...
haircuts were of two major brands... duck tails and flat tops...
way cool... Kinda like lookin' at Terry WEBB's ('63-RIP) Senior
picture over and over... ... I can just see the guys in the barber
shop picking number 7 and 12 (I can't really remember the little
poster on the wall I'm faking it)... the owners of two of my
favorite cars inna day were in that class... Charlie RAFFETY ('57)
with the ultimate '57 Olds, especially after he painted it black...
OK mainly after he painted it black and Stuart ZIEGE ('57) with the
way cool '58 Impala... same caviat... My next door neighbor baby-
sitter was there, Sharon REED ('57-RIP)... I remember when Sharon
died... hit my mom really hard... Gus KEENEY ('57) was there...
CW BROWN ('58) was a Junior that year... Lyner the Spinner ('57)
and straight flush... what a blast that musta been... so now we say
a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Floyd MELTON ('57 Flat top) on your special
day, February 17, 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
