Re: Peter BAUGHER ('63)

One of my favorite memories of Peter was from third-year French
class when we were sophomores. A number of us had first-year
French in eighth grade at Chief Jo: All but me had committed to
five years of foreign language by graduation, which was the
requirement to get a language class in eighth grade at the time; I
was there because my first choice elective, "General language,"
and the alternative/second choice "Latin," were full and the
registrar moved me into French without asking - giving me one of
the defining opportunities of my life to study under Mrs. Sonja
Harmon (RIP) http://rhs63.tripod.com/63columbian/ss/143.html I
wound up taking five years anyway, three of French and two of
Russian (again from Mrs. Harmon). When I dropped in on the '61
class reunion to chat with Dave STEIN ('61) while attending the
R2K+1 all-years gathering, my wife needed the restroom, so I
showed her where it was. When she came out, she was amazed that I
was among a half-dozen-plus of Sonja's former students, singing
Russian folk songs she had taught us almost forty years before.
Many of us kept in touch with her for the rest of her life, she
was that influential, and her daughter Sandy (Sasha) ('62) wrote
personal letters to us when she died, thanking us.

Backtracking off the rabbit trail, we took second-year French in
ninth grade, while Peter took his first year that same year, then
he took intensive second-year French at (I think) the University
of Chicago during the summer. He joined us for our third year
of French as sophomores with Mrs. Compton. She was such a bad
teacher that I was told some parents of students that year
ensured the school board did not renew her contract. By the end
of the year, Peter was so advanced beyond most of us that he
actually took on some of the teaching, and did it well. The one
good thing Mrs. Compton did was to include in the curriculum Le
Petit Prince, d'Antoine de Saint-Exupéry ("s'il te plait, dessine
moi un mouton;" "c'est trés estrange, le pays des larmes").

Another memory is the nearly monotonous start to the roll call
during most of my Chief Jo core classes most years: "ANDERSON
(Paul); ARMSTRONG (Phil); BAUGHER (Peter); BENNETT (me)"
...
Regards, ecb3 - from a 100-year record cold winter in
central Virginia, where last week's snow is hanging on
stubbornly as we sigh at a predicted new accumulation
tonight of 1-3 inches, while being reminded to "spring
forward" this Sunday. Check out a concept new to me
      this week, but intuitively sensible:
      "Meteorological spring".

Re: What's this cold stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dang... this winter crap is really getting in my way... There's
dandruff all around Vegas and rain inna middle... not just
rain... freezing rain... yuk... my daughter and I have a fun
contest going on between us... each gift giving event we try and
find a new "I love you more" item... after the last one I
gave her (I think I gave her two that time) I figured I was
waaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead... today she joined the delinquents for
lunch and gave me a late V-day card... she also gave me a sweet
ring (she had it on a chain thinking I would prefer that)... it
was the same ring I gave her last time... only hers said "I love
you MOST"... uh oh... the hunt is on...

So today we gots us a couple a dudes celebrating... well one
isn't with us but I can see him now guzzling Pepsi's with Pook
('63-RIP), Freddie ('63-RIP), Ralph ('63-RIP), Dick ('63-RIP),
Shelley ('63-RIP), Chuck ('63-RIP) and a ton a other guys and
Bomber-babes... Now yer gonna say "what was he thinking?"... but
this guy was a long time bud and mentor of sorts... he was the
one who helped me decide to join the Marine Corps... as he put it
"at least you'll know your body will come back"... I remember 4
of us had these really cool Pendleton jackets without lapels...
the b-day guy hadda red one, his brother Gary ('64) hadda green
one, I hadda green one and Terry DAVIS ('65) hadda black one...
ahhhhhhh the good ol' dayz.. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Terry WEBB ('63-RIP)
and Brad UPTON ('74) on your special day, March 4, 2015!!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Hanford tour registration starts March 9 ~ 3/3/15 TCH

"Registration begins at 9 am March 9 for Hanford tours
this year with initially a choice of two tours.
Visitors can choose between a tour focused on Hanford
environmental cleanup, which includes a look inside B
Reactor, or a more in-depth tour of B Reactor, which
will include a drive past pre-World War II sites on
the nuclear reservation. In April, registration will
start for a third tour to be offered for the first time
this year. It will focus on the sites where settlers
lived before they were forced to give up their farms,
homes and businesses for the secret Manhattan Project
to produce plutonium in WW II."

Every time I read reference to Karl Marx I smile remembering Fire
sign Theater, a VERY politically incorrect comedy group that put
out some outrageous albums in the '60s..

One of the album covers titled "All Hail Lennon and Marx". Of
course underneath that title was pictured John Lennon and Groucho
Marx.

Anyone remember those albums?

Re: Peter BAUGHER ('63)

Didn't know Peter BAUGHER but grew up with his younger brother
Paul ('72). Paul is a big mountaineering guide, and ran Crystal
Mountain's ski patrol for a long time -- he may still. Paul's
also an avalanche expert; he even gets to set off charges to
create avalanches, improving safety around the ski areas.
