Re: Bomber basketball – State Tournament 2015

Richland Bombers - 54 ..... Davis Pirates - 59

The Bombers looked like they were sleep-walking for most of the
game. They were missing both layups and 3 point shots and most
everything in between. They had Davis in foul trouble throughout
the game, but couldn't take advantage because of poor free throw
shooting. Their team defense was almost non-existent, allowing
Davis to drive the lane for easy layups time after time. The
Bomber's shot selection was terrible. They were taking wild shots
and shots under heavy pressure on possessions where they needed
to be looking for a clean, open shot. And they were turning the
ball over way too much.

They were down by ten going into the fourth quarter, and things
didn't look good. But then, for a stretch of two or three minutes
on the game clock, they started playing like we expect Bombers to
play. They started finding some open looks at the basket and
knocking down a couple of three pointers, they played some great
defense and got a couple of turnovers and all of a sudden they
had tied the game up, and the Bomber crowd was going crazy. Sad
to say, that was the end of the line. After that little burst,
they fell back to all the same bad problems they had shown all
the rest of the game and ended up losing by that five point
margin.

I hate to say it, but to be truthful, the Bombers didn't look
like a well-coached, disciplined team. They just didn't look
ready to play at a State Tournament level. Too bad, I really
thought this was going to be their year to go all the way.

Bombers will now have to win two games in a row just to finish in
fourth place. Hope they can do it.

To: Mike FRANCO ('70)

A while back I attended one of Prof David Domke's notable (in
Seattle) lecture series, and a friend told me she'd have me meet
someone I most likely knew. Sitting in Kane 130 at UDub, there
was Mike FRANCO ('70). We had fun reminiscing about many of
people we knew, especially those stalwarts of the Jewish
community in the Fifties and Sixties. One of the most famous of
course was Larry CORYELL ('61), my estimable campaign manager
when I ran for ASB office and formidable editor of the Sandstorm.
Also Larry was a state champion high jumper. Incidentally, he was
also a pretty good guitarist.

And there was Howard KIRZ (60-RIP) who was ASB President and
later Group Health's Chief of Medical Staff. Howard left us way
too soon.

No where did Peter BAUGHER's ('63) name come up. I met Peter the
same year Dianne KORNBERG ('63), Lynn JOHNSON ('63) and I were in
"The Diary of Anne Frank", a production of the Richland Players
in the old Village Theater [on GWWay] in 1959. Even though all
three of them were Warriors, we were friends before we made our
way to Col-Hi. Dianne was "Ann", Lynn was the production's
prompter, and Peter was their friend. Over the years I have known
Peter I have never heard him refer to a Jewish background.

And he's just as intelligent, thoughtful and interesting--or more
so--than he was over fifty years ago.

As for people who "look like they're a Jew"-- well, I guess I do.
Some time ago, when "In the Beginning" quilt store here in
Seattle was still a going concern, Laurie Schifrin (published
quilt designer) asked me to applique a menorah and a dreidel. She
said "You're Jewish, aren't you?". I said, "Not that I know of,
but I might be. Who knows what the ancestors in Spain were up
to--they could have been converses.". She said, "You look
exactly like a Jewish woman I know in NYC.". And I told her that
probably sealed the deal!

That was quite a bit different than saying that I looked like a
Jew. Right, Mike?

-Rosann BENEDICT ('63) ~ Seattle where we're having cherry
blossoms and tulips very early. Sadly, the snow pack is
      just about non-existent.

Re: RHS vs Davis State Basketball State Basketball Quarter Final

Tough game for Richland who lost 59 – 54 to the Davis Pirates
Thursday morning. It was uncharacteristic for Richland who only
shot 13 of 28 from the free-throw line for 46%, with 29½% from
the floor. Landon Radliff had 19 points, Steven Beo had 13, Chad
Miller with 9, Jeff Ostler with 7 and Carson Miller with 6.
Richland now will play Friday morning at 9 AM against Kentwood in
the consolation bracket for 4th or 6th place. Davis will play
Woodinville who beat Kentwood 58 – 57 at 3:45 PM Friday.
