After our two years in the service, Pete took a job with the U.S. Corps of Army engineers and we were sent to The Dalles, for a year (1955), where he trained during the building of The Dalles Dam. Your treasured picture of Celilo Falls (pre dam) took my breath away, and brought back many memories. While we were there I took many pictures of the Indians, standing on their platforms (breath taking!) fishing, with huge salmon in their nets. These pictures are historical treasures now, as is your painting. After The Dalles Dam was completed (which is west of the falls) the falls disappeared for us to see, forever. The Umatilla and Nez Perce Indians fished there for 11,000 years. These remaining pictures, of that time are true treasures. That was one of the best $10.00 you ever spent! Bomber Cheers, -Pat UPSON Tervooren ('49)~ in VERY sunny Portland, OR where the Blue Angels have been lifting my rooftop, at the Hillsboro air show for two days! Please note, people: WE HAVE, AT LAST, A FEMALE BLUE ANGEL FLYING WITH THEM THIS YEAR!!! It's about time!!! *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Jim RUSSELL ('58) To: David DOUGLAS ('62) Re: Celilo Falls above the Dalles Dam I envy your photo! http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Dou/150719-TheDallesDam.jpg On our way to Portland to see my grandparents, my parents, with brother Jack ('60-RIP) and I, often stopped at the Celilo Falls on the Columbia to watch the Indians fish. All this changed on the morning of March 10, 1957, when the massive steel and concrete gates of The Dalles Dam closed and choked back the downstream surge of the Columbia River. Six hours later and eight miles upstream, Celilo Falls, the spectacular natural wonder and the age-old Indian salmon fishery associated with it was under water. I've always mourned the loss of this beautiful and spectacular part of the Columbia. Cheers -Jim RUSSELL ('58) ~ Mountlake Terrace (hot, hot, hot) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Ruth MILES Bruns ('59) Re: Picture of "Dalles Dam" NOT http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Dou/150719-TheDallesDam.jpg David DOUGLAS'('62) picture is not of The Dalles Dam. It is Celilo Falls before the dam was built in the mid-1950s, and illustrates how the tribes fished for perhaps a thousand years. -Ruth MILES Bruns ('59) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Larry MATTINGLY ('60) To: David DOUGLAS ('62) Re: The Dalles Dam http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Dou/150719-TheDallesDam.jpg That picture is of Celilo Falls just upriver from the City of the "Dalles" OR, and the Dalles Dam that has backed up the river and covered the Falls and, the traditional fishing ground of the local Indian tribe. YouTube: 1956 Indians fishing w/dip nets at Celilo Falls YouTube: Celilo Falls 1915-1957 - 27 minutes long The Friends of Celilo Falls is on Facebook AND on the WWW: http://www.friendsofcelilofalls.org/about.html 2005 Mt. Hood w/Celilo Falls in the foreground I think I was about 7 years old when we went down with 3-4 car loads of relatives to see the Indians on the flimsy platforms netting huge salmon and I remember the smell of the 100s of salmon hanging in the sun to cure. I also remember that just before the dam flooded the area my Dad and Bob Anderson (father of Holley ('64) and Rob) and I fished under that railroad bridge that is just above the dam. The bridge was about 60 feet up on concrete pillars that were on some big rocks in the river. The river was quite swift and we were crossing from rock to rock on narrow wiggly boards. I liked to fish with Dad and Bob, but that trip terrified me at about 8 years old. But we did each catch a nice big salmon that day. Getting that 28 pound fish back across those boards was enough to convince me that no fish was worth THAT trip. Olympia Area Alumni... Sunday night the 19th, is the large Lake Fair fireworks display over Capitol Lake. We will be firing 8 and 10-inch shells. Showtime is 10PM sharp. -J. Larry MATTINGLY ('60) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: David DOUGLAS ('62) Thank you to Maren and all the others who corrected the description of the painting I purchased at the auction. It shows Indians fishing from wooden platforms at Celilo Falls before the dams submerged them (the falls, not the fishermen). That makes the picture even more valuable. I reserved the walls of the hallway leading to the bedrooms for western motif pictures. We have pictures of a cowboy and a Wells Fargo stage. I've wanted one of Indians and now we have one. Bomber Alumni are great! -David DOUGLAS ('62) ~ Mesa, AZ *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Donni CLARK Dunphy ('63) To: David DOUGLAS ('62) Re: The Dalles Dam http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Dou/150719-TheDallesDam.jpg David your picture is of Celilo Falls. You Are looking at Washington and that is the Dallas Dam they are constructing. Sadly the government covered those falls, the Indians primary fishing spot without any warning to the Indians. We attended a play called "The Ghosts of Celilo" in Portland shortly after moving up here about 5 years ago. It is a very interesting but sad story. The Indians who lived there depended on the fish they got from that spot. You can read more about it if you Google Celilo Falls and maybe even see your picture. -Donni CLARK Dunphy ('63) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Dennis HAMMER ('64) To: David DOUGLAS ('62) Re: The Dalles Dam http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Dou/150719-TheDallesDam.jpg I suspect whoever labeled your photo had not heard of The Dalles, Oregon, and labeled it Dallas. I read years ago that "The Dalles" is one of only two, or maybe three, cities in the United States with "The" in its name. A better name for the photo would be "Celilo Falls," which was covered up by the lake behind the dam in 1957. Just to make sure it was Celilo Falls and not some similar looking place I did a Google image search and found a similar picture from somewhat different angle and was able to match three different features from the terrain on the Washington side confirming it to be Celilo Falls. I have read they really built the dam not for the electricity (I'm sure it all gets used now), but for improved navigation so they would not have to use the Cascade Locks and canal. In the '50s parents drove by many times and I always had to watch the Indians fishing and the construction on the dam. Always hated that they built that dam, destroying the falls and breaking one more promise to the Indians. -Dennis HAMMER ('64) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Gary BEHYMER ('64) To: David DOUGLAS ('62) Love your photo from yesterday! http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Dou/150719-TheDallesDam.jpg Guessing it was Celilo Falls? http://www.critfc.org/salmon-culture/tribal-salmon-culture/celilo-falls/ -Gary BEHYMER ('64) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: David RIVERS ('65) Re: I've seen Fire and I've seen rain... Well, Friday we headed off to Moldy Marvin's Rat Fink Extravaganza a few miles outa Palmdale, CA... Thank goodness for Google maps... I had charted our course early... we could go thru Cajon Pass or we could take a two lane from Apple Valley... I opted for Apple Valley... Cajon has been torn up for the last few trips and V E R Y slow... off we went and arrived around 1PM... rooms weren't ready so we ran over to the place where the show would be the next day to make sure we knew the route... coming back we learned: A) people in cars in the Palmdale area are nuts; and B) the off "ramp" from the 14 on to Palmdale Blvd. is actually a "merge" with traffic lights and a sign "oncoming traffic does not stop"... you have less than say 50 feet to merge and then... WATCH OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only used it once... once was enough... Checked in and every channel was nothing but the entire Cajon Pass on fire... The whole danged thing... ain't seen fire like that since Vietnam!... Off to dinner at Red Lobster... (One of daughter Sarah's favorites)... then a short trip to the grocery store... more like the demolition derby... seriously... people just aimed at us... one and only trip to the store... next day headed for the show... light turn out because of the fire and threat of rain... no threat... downpour... Rat Fink Fans can survive... dancing (not me) in the rain and one of our favorite 16 year olds was the "pin up" winner and sold a piece of art for the charity for 100 smackers... her grandma also sold a piece for $85... we were thrilled... while Moldy went bust on the cost the rest of us hadda ball... trip back to the motel was harrowing... rainex was not sufficient and my turn signal switch bit the dust on the way to the show that morning... when safely back in the room we opted for the restaurant near the motel rather than brave the demo derby again... Left early for home and had a fairly cool drive home Sunday... Realized I hadn't done an HB for Rod PETERSON ('63) for Sunday {7/19]... arrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh! Yes, I'm still doing the same silly stuff as I did back then... ah but I'm not rock climbing in jeeps like someone I know... HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Terry WERNER ('65) on your special day, July 20, 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -David RIVERS ('65) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Loretta JENSEN Kusak ('65) To: David DOUGLAS ('62) David, The photo of the dam that you sent to the Sandstorm so reminded me of the Celilo Falls area on the Oregon side of the Columbia. I used to watch the American Indians fish for salmon in this area when I was a little girl. My family and I would stop at Celilo Falls to buy salmon on our way home to Richland after visiting my Grandma and Grandpa in Portland. I went on line and looked up the area showing the American Indians fishing at Celilo Falls. This was the area that became the Dalles Dam. Of course, I do not know if it is the area of the photo you bought but it sure reminded me of Celilo falls looking across the Columbia River to Washington. http://ohs.org/education/oregonhistory/historicviewer/CeliloFalls/index.cfm [This link is cool... you can do some "click and drag" to see how things have changed since The Dalles Dam went in. -Maren] -Loretta JENSEN Kusak ('65) ~ Mercer Island, WA *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Shirley COLLINGS Haskins ('66) Re: Letters at Richland's Fran Rish Stadium ~ 7/18/15 Herald "Visiting high school football fans at Fran Rish Stadium in Richland will have access to improved bathrooms and their own concession stand thanks to newly built visitor bleachers. There will also be a familiar sight, absent from last season, sitting in the hillside on either side of the bleachers: a yellow 'R' and a purple 'H.'" Looking forward to the Allied Arts Show in Howard Amon Park next Friday and Saturday plus the hydro races on Sunday. -Shirley COLLINGS Haskins ('66) ~ from a very warm Richland where we will be back to the triple digits for a few days *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Lee BUSH ('68) To: David DOUGLAS ('62) Re: The Dalles Dam http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Dou/150719-TheDallesDam.jpg Regarding the picture you purchased at the auction. I opened the link, that you provided, to view the picture you purchased. As you probably already know, it's a great photo of Celilo Falls where tribal Indians built platforms, which they stood on, to use their "dip nets" to fish for salmon. I remember seeing them, as a child, when our family drove by them on our way to the Oregon Coast. Celilo falls became submerged, on March 10, 1957, by the backwaters of The Dalles Dam. If I'm not mistaken, there is a similar photo in the indoor dining area of 'Miner's Drive In' in Yakima. Thank you for sharing the photo. -Lee BUSH ('68) *************************************************************** *************************************************************** >>From: Betti AVANT ('69) To: Marilyn "Em" DeVINE ('52) I'm not sure what the place will look like after they do the rebuild of Lewis & Clark. I imagine there are pictures some where though. I know the place on Van Giesen is supposed to be ready in August with Marcus Whitman and Lewis & Clark in 2016. The older schools just need to be replaced as they aren't practical any longer and really aren't modern so to speak. Glad you had a good time, bring some pictures to the next Bomber lunch [on 8/8/15]. -Betti AVANT ('69) ~ from sunny Richland *************************************************************** *************************************************************** Memorial SERVICE Information only >>Nina ANDRE Barlow ('48-RIP) A grave side service will be held at Sunset Gardens on Tuesday, July 21, 2015 at 1pm. *************************************************************** *************************************************************** That's it for today.
