To: Dennis HAMMER ('64):

Construction of The Dalles Dam was not meant to by-pass the
Cascade Locks. That was sort of accomplished by the building
of Bonneville Dam many years earlier.

On another note, the spell checker lists Dallas as an
alternative spelling of The Dalles. Not too sure what the folks
in Big or Little "D" [Dallas, TX or Dallas, OR] think of that.
Bye the bye, Little "D" [Dallas, OR] is west of Salem, OR.

-Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ Mount Angel, OR north and
      east of Salem.

Re: Celilo Falls, OR

Note that Miner's in Yakima has an excellent display of Celilo
Falls artifacts and pictures. I remember watching the Indians
dipping salmon.

Re: Lewis and Clark Rebuild

Sigh. You know you're old when you attended the ORIGINAL Lewis
and Clark Elementary School, the one that existed BEFORE the one
they're tearing down!

I have a faint memory of going to kindergarten there (or was it
pre-school?). I remember that some time during the day we would
lie down for a nap on little rugs our parents provided. Mom gave
me a pink one (maybe that's been my problem).

I also remember that nearby sat the ORIGINAL Richland High
School (or was it Columbia? [NOT Columbia till 1943. -Maren]).

I remember it as a square two-story building, and recall looking
in the window and seeing a classroom with stacks of student
chairs. Anyone know when that building was torn down?

Re: Celilo Falls at the Dalles Dam

I so wished that I could have seen the falls in person! The
first time that I heard of them was when I read a book (sorry, I
don't remember the name) about the Denny family and others
heading for Seattle back in the 1800s to settle there. The
Oregon Trail was along the river. Many families took the
'river' route. I don't remember where they put into the river,
but of course, before getting to Celio Falls, they had to get
out of the river. Someplace past the falls, they resumed going
by river to Olympia. Getting back to the Denny family... just
the women and possessions where on the boat. The captain was
drinking heavily and fell asleep. He was awoken by the people
when they heard the falls up ahead. If you are interested in
reading about the Denny family, just Google them. Very
interesting on how they settled Seattle and the early years.
