The other day I was at a reception for a young woman who had
just returned to North Carolina from an unsuccessful stint in a
job somewhere out west. I heard her describe how terrible it
was: cold winters, super hot summers, no trees, wind all the
time and so forth. Suddenly I realized that she was talking
about Richland, my home town. I guess every one can't love the
desert but I did and it was sure a great place to grow up.

As a '52 Bomber I was an indifferent student but one teacher I
remember was Mrs. Harmon (?) who actually praised my writing.
Since leaving and facing the world I have become a marine
scientist with 45 oceanographic cruises and a number of books
to my credit (the latest is "The Last Beach"). Interesting how
many colleagues in my specialty grew up, as I did, far from the
ocean breezes.

I've enjoyed keeping up with the Sandstorm; some great stories
and some great writing... lots of interesting interactions. It
seems however that messages from the early fifties graduates
are becoming less frequent.

Good ol' Tooter, never fails to amuse and still suffers from
"foot in mouth" disease. Sure hope the Class of '65 doesn't
refund his money for the big week end.

Which brings me to the reason for this entry. It the birthday
of one of the younger Bombers, who may or may not be a very,
very, very, very, very, very distant relative. And if he lives
on the east coast, he could be even more distant. Can't say
I've ever met him, but I will tip the ol' propeller beanie and
say "Happy Birthday!" to "cousin" Gary CARLSON ('64).

-Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ Mount Angel, OR where we
are now under a "heat advisory", like we really needed
it. What the whole West Coast needs is a severe "rain
       advisory."

Re: Bomber "R"

I just came past the Bomber Bowl and saw that they are
putting in the forms to pour concrete for the new "R" and
"H" next to the new stadium seats. It looks that they will
be bigger and closer to sitting area.

Re: Link to obituary for Thomas W. PEASHKA ('68-RIP)

Thank you for putting this in the Sandstorm, which was
responsible for how Thomas and I came to meet again in 2001,
33 years after graduation. We married in 2004.

Blessings,

Re: ahhhhhhhhhhhh love

As I write this little piece, I imagine the CARLSONs ('64)
sitting in a moon lit spot enjoying a romantic evening
celebrating Judy's birthday... hey nice stuff huh... specially
considering I am actually writing this in 109° with the sun
blasting down but by the time you read this the first part will
have occurred and it will be on to the next celebration... what
a cool deal... Now I know Judy's good pal Diane MURPHY ('65)
and her little buddy MOUTON ('65) make a month out of it, but
I think the Carlsons planned it just right... the picture of
the b-day Bomber in his tux on Judy's face book page is just
about as cool as it gets... almost a "Bond, James Bond"
moment... now I'll say I don't look bad in a tux... but mine
has been gathering dust for a while... in fact the last time
I wore it I was having dinner with Herman Cain (NAB) so that
tells you how long that has been... as we chatted I remember
thinking what a nice "older" gentleman he was... then he told
me he was a year older than I... gasp I sure hope I look like
a nice "older" gentleman to others! So HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Gary
CARLSON ('64) on your special day, August 18, 2015!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Tom PeashKA ('68-RIP)

News of Tom's passing was jarring as he was one of my heroes.
The musicianship and style he exhibited set the mark for quite
a few of us who followed. My best musical memories (to this
day) include an Isle of Phyve dance at the Community House
in Spring '67. While the Summer Of Love might have been
revolutionizing music in San Francisco, Tom, Keith, Lynn,
Robert and Randy were doing it for me on GWWay. Simply put,
he & they were the real deal.
