Hello Bombers,

I recently visited Gordon Pappas, who directed our music program
while we were at Col-Hi. He is well and enjoying life in his
retirement home, Stoneridge Creek Retirement Creek Retirement
Community in Pleasanton, CA. He recently enjoyed a veteran's
trip to Washington DC to see the WWII memorial.

Mr. Pappas not only led a first-rate musical program, he was
an excellent record keeper. He has an extensive notebook of
clippings, photos and programs from his years at Richland,
1948-1960.

When I looked through this memory book I was reminded of several
highlights from my years there. In 1953 we staged the musical,
"Good News." It is set in the Roaring Twenties at mythical Tait
College. Mr. Pappas went way out on a limb to make some special
arrangements for this. He rented a gold curtain from a theater
supply company in New York City to put some life in our
auditorium. He purchased himself a follow spot so that soloists
could be properly highlighted. The school district later bought
it from him. There are a couple of very familiar musical
numbers: "The Best Things In Life Are Free," and "Varsity
Drag." I handled properties for the show. I became an annoyance
to Coach Rish, because we needed football uniforms, but they
were out for cleaning. The whole experience was great fun.

The other experience of special memory was the Rafael Mendez
concert in April, 1954, just before we graduated. Mendez was a
very fine trumpet player who developed a sort of concert and
teaching program in many high schools. He had many arrangements
of familiar pieces that he had done for trumpet. He came to
spend a week with us preparing for the concert on the weekend.
Mendez was an elegant and polished musician. He inspired us all
to do our best for him. The memory is a highlight of my last
year at our school.

For the people who went to Carmichael Junior High, there is an
obituary for Cynthia Huckstep. Miss Huckstep was also a
wonderful music teacher, dearly loved by her students. Many of
them went on to the music program at Col-Hi.

I have copies from Mr. Pappas' memory book that I will make
available for the Club 40 reunion September 11-12.

Best wishes,
-Karl Bucholz, aka Shyrl BUCHOLTZ ('54)

The momentous occasion on this date was the birth of a Bomber
Babe whom I went to school with. As I recall, we didn't
interface much, if at all, back in the day. I don't think I even
danced with her at a sock hop or mixer or what ever was going
down at Hi-Spot. Probably because I was too scared. I have,
however, spoken to her at several reunions and other Club 40
events in the recent past.

On that note, let me tip the ol' propeller beanie and offer a
"Happy Birthday!" greeting on the 21st birthday of Judi PEARSON
('54), and wish her many more.

It is good to see that more have signed on for the Club 40
Annual Meeting; but if you haven't the deadline is fast
approaching.

eagerly await the promised week end rain. What can I say,
the State Fair opens this week.

Re: Okanogan Complex Fire

Good Morning, Maren,

I read Carol CONVERSE' entry in the 8/26 Sandstorm, so I thought
you might convey to her our thanks for thinking of us, and
maybe, somehow, let her know our family is safe. Our daughter,
Debi and her family, had a scare on last Thursday evening. Had
to prepare for the worst, but with all the green (orchards and
alfalfa fields) around their home they were able to remain
unscathed. However, they did evacuate to our home around
midnight. We live by the hospital in Omak, and we figured they
wouldn't let the hospital burn... felt pretty safe. The smoke
surrounding our county is extremely dense and very toxic. We
pray for those who are still in danger, and our thoughts go out
to those who have experienced total and devastating loss of
their property.

Good talking to you, Maren.

Sandstorm,
Thank you, John ADKINS ('62), for the video about the fires:
  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iDdm3KGPFLU

Just heartbreaking for WA/OR/ID and anyone else who lives there
and others who love that area of the country so much. So glad
Peg SHEERAN Finch ('63) family is made it through the fire.
Glad that Lynn Koenig's men and Peg's husband are OK while
fighting fires. So proud to see women working side by side with
the FireFighters and thankful for all the FireFighters from all
over who came to fight. This kind of neighborliness is so
typical NW. God bless you all!

Re: Okanogan Fires

I went up there yesterday 8/25/15. We only saw one house that
had burned to the ground... it was the Baker place. For those
who live in the area, it's the house on the right just as you
drop over the hill on your way to Conconully. They lost
everything! Please add them to your prayers. My folks' place
is safe & out of harm, so far. My place which is right above
Peg SHEERAN Finch ('63) (off of Hendricks Loop) is safe too!
So thank all Bombers who said Prayers!!

BOMBERS RULE!
