I'll be heading back to Richland on the Red-eye Sunday night.
It's been a great 3+ months. I could easily stay another 2
months to help my daughter with more stuff, but "home" calls.
A neighbor suggested that I could come back in October after
my trip with Rambling Rovers to Branson, MO. Maybe, but...
uh... probably not. Maybe, though.

Looking forward to seeing some friends who will in town for
Club 40. I'm not going to the shindig, but they may go to
Sterlings on Friday for our regular get together. Oh, and
there's Pinochle, too. One of the gals in the daytime game
has started Dialysis, so our time, which used to be from 1 to
3 pm, is changed to 9 to 11. Ha... I'm not used to playing
cards in the morning! The game is important, but it's the
people that matter most. Instead of cutting my lunch
short to get there by 1, I'll be able to stay for the whole
time to visit with so many of my old Bomber friends. And I'll
order a regular lunch instead of just a cup of soup. Not
great on the budget, but I can pinch pennies somewhere else.

Hoping everyone enjoys their Labor Day weekend and that all
stay safe.

-Marilyn "Em" DeVINE ('52) ~ in gorgeously beautiful
Anchorage, Alaska. We've broken a few records for
      sunny days and reasonable temperatures.

Re: update

Probably time for a final final on the list of attendees
for Club 40... a couple that I know who paid are not in...
certainly by Monday... I think that the classes of the '50s
have an excellent amount attending..

-Jim McKEOWN ('53) ~ from sunny Sacramento where the temp
has been super... 10° below normal for the past couple
      of weeks...

Looks like the Junior Gyrene ('65) in almost back to "normal".

Be that as it may, today we celebrate the birthday of a
fellow inmate of Mr. Wheeler's Home Room for at least two
years. There was a change in the order of business in my
senior year in which 1st period became the home room
regardless.

A tip of the ol' propeller beanie and a "Happy Birthday!"
shout is in store for Dennis CHAPMAN ('54). Perhaps we will
see each other and the "Big" birthday party later this month.

-Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ Mount Angel, OR where
we did have rain during State Fair week, and may have
      some more later on.

I always love reading the Sandstorm; don't know what happened
to my long entry I sent yesterday, but as the picture arrived,
let me introduce Jaime, our exchange student living with us
for the school year.
    http://AlumniSandstorm.com/Xtra/Cro/160902_Jaime.jpg

he is a junior and a soccer player (so I'm playing soccer mom
again after 25 years or so. our small school of about 200
loves exchange students, so he is one of ten at our school.
he is from Madrid, Spain, and in the photo he is showing a
Spanish omelet he made to take to an exchange student get
together.

He is a nice young man... it is an adjustment for us two old
grandparents to have someone so young living with us. I'm sure
he sees us as old, because when I was an exchange student at
18 for a year in Holland, I saw my Dutch parents as old, and
they were in their 60s. Warren and I are 10 years older, we
could even be older than his Spanish grandparents, but we are
trying.

-Helen CROSS Kirk ('62) ~ from Hope, IN where the tornados
fortunately didn't touch down, but we've had tons of
rain, so our lawns look like we are in Ireland, instead
      of the Midwest!!

First, a belated but heartfelt Happy Birthday [on 8/30] to
Kathy HOFF, one of my all-time favorite ladies of the Class of
'64. She is indeed the "class" of '64. Hope it was memorable,
Kathy.

Second, the 70th birthday bash brought to the top of my murky
mind an old encounter that was amusing. Wish I'd shared it
with our class at the 70th, but here it is now: I spent my
freshman year in college ('64-'65) at the U. of Puget Sound in
Tacoma. Naturally, I had a roommate in the dorm. One weekend,
thinking we had nothing better to do, we decided to take a bus
ride to Seattle and poke around. So we did. We were the only
two people in that big bus. We sat in the rear seat and
pretended we had a very large limo for the day. Well, we got
to Seattle and proceeded to wander around the streets. Walking
down one sidewalk, my roommate, who had an eye for the ladies,
poked me in the ribs and whispered, "Bill, check out these
girls coming toward us." I looked ahead and saw that there
were indeed two attractive young ladies headed our direction.
Then I looked closer, and my eyes got big. It was Dawn BERN
and Jamie WORLEY! When they got close, they recognized me, and
there was an eruption of happy smiles and effusive greetings
all around. We went our separate ways minutes later. My
roommate was speechless. But I could tell underneath that
grumpy silence there was a strong current of jealousy. Not
only did we run into two attractive ladies, but I knew them
well! Just too much for him to bear.
