Getting closer to the "Big" birthday party. Only we aren't
gonna be at Rosy's. which is a shame. Hope that situation
clarifies soon. I would guess the Girls of '54 are gonna
hafta join the "Guys" at the Burger and Brew place. There's
always the Atomic Brew Pub in the former A&W building on Lee.

But enough about that. We are here to celebrate the birthday
of a Bomber whom I graduated with. Neat guy who did things.

With all that being said; a tip of the ol' propeller beanie
and a "Happy Birthday!" shout out for Carl VOLMER ('54) [on
9/6] with the hope that he will show up at the modified "Big"
birthday party in Red Lion dinning room. I am assuming that
this is the Richland Red Lion, not the one in Kennewick or
the one in Pasco. I dont think they have one in Burbank.

Re: Tri-City Herald

Am I wrong, confused, or just getting old? Didn't the Tri-
City Herald used to be an afternoon paper and the Columbia
Basin News a morning paper? Or maybe it was the reverse. I
know several years ago I used to subscribe to the Seattle
Times (evening) and the Seattle P.I. (morning). Then the
Times switched to mornings to kill the P.I. (which they
eventually succeeded in doing). Now the Seattle Times
(printed locally) still can't get a final score for the
Mariners or an update in the standings if the game at Safeco
Field runs into extra innings.

Cheers

Re: Gene Bernard

Thank you, Maren, for searching out Floyd MELTON's ('57)
picture from Lewis & Clark. I LOVED Mr. Bernard. He taught
science when I was in junior high at Chief Jo. I took an
early morning science class from him in 8th and 9th grade.
We studied geology and aviation. Our field trips were GREAT
FUN. When I returned to Chief Jo as a 9th grade English
teacher, he became a good personal friend. By then, he was
the vice-principal - the enforcer. One of my favorite stories
of him was when some boys skipped class and were outside in
one of the evergreen trees. Gene went out to have a smoke,
but they thought he was on to them and were so scared that
they fell out of the tree! Gene took full credit for "smoking
them out."
