A 65 year graduation party is an occasion to remember!. Those attending were Don and Marti MEYERS, Murray and Carol DUNCAN, Annette BRADLEY and Don FORSYTHE, Pat PATTON and her granddaughter (name not caught) from Marysville, Nancy GRIFFIN Cutshall, Irl FRENCH, Nadine ROBERTS Hackney, Bob and Barb HARMAN, Bud BARTLETT, Stan BJORKLUND from Loveland, CO, Richard LOCKWOOD, Bill and Janet McCUE, Betty BELL Norton and Dr. Chet GETTINGS. Don and Marti Meyers brought a lovely floral tribute to our classmates no longer among us. Lots of laughter and remembering - truly an afternoon to remember! -Betty BELL Norton ('51) ~ Richland ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) It's a funny thing about birthdays; they seem to happen every year about the same time. Some people use them to keep track of their age. Probably a lot better than sawing yourself in half just to count the rings. Others say to themselves "Oh boy! Birthday cake!" They would like to have their cake and eat it too. And then there are Bomber birthdays which are very important to many. This is one of those occasions. Happily to say I knew the Bomber Babe in question although we did not interface all that much back then. She was a cheer leader then and still is in many ways today. At the recent "Big" birthday party someone asked if she could do the splits as she had done. She declined since she wasn't in "uniform" and would need some warm up time. But she still could, even at the ripe age of 22. Let me now tip the ol' propeller beanie and say "Happy Birthday!" to Norma MYRICK ('54) on this occasion. She will probably be at the Richland Applebee's come this Friday for the girls lunch. This is a trial run for the lunch group since Rosy's is closed (and the space up for lease). The guy's will still be at Bob's Burgers and Brew (or is it Bob's Brew and Burgers?) -Bob Carlson, aka Mike CLOWES ('54) ~ Mount Angel, OR where preparations for Oktoberfest continue as opening day will be Thursday the 15th. The weather is supposed to remain dry with temps in the eighties. ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Mike BRADLEY ('56) Re: Club 40 Reunion, 2016 Hats off to all the people who contributed their time and effort to make the reunion a success. Especially those classmates from my class of 1956. It was great to see all of those '56ers who attended. -Mike BRADLEY ('56) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Ed QUIGLEY ('62) Re: Bernard vs. Barnard vs. Saur Oddly enough, I checked in on the Sandstorm Archives tonight, for the first time in a couple of years, and found that my name had been invoked by Pete BEAULIEU ('62), regarding "spats" from Gene Bernard. Now, as I remember it, I was a perfect student who would have never done anything to deserve such repercussions, but... OK, I cannot tell a lie; I wound up with a fairly well calloused butt at the end of my 3 years at Chief Jo, and received the ultimate punishment several times from Mr.s Bernard, Barnard & Saur, and not just once from each, but several times! Despite that, I loved and respected all 3 of them, and Pete, thank you for reminding me of that stunt; it had disappeared from my memory. However, I got back at Saur, the last time I received one from him, and it was perfect. If I remember correctly, he spent a couple of weeks working on a 2-3' rosewood paddle, spending many hours cutting, drilling holes (for aerodynamic reasons; I'm sure that it never crossed his mind that those little holes would raise welts on the behinds of those blessed enough to receive his gentle attentions!) and polishing that thing in class. I don't remember what I did that aroused his ire, but I was "invited" to assume the position for the honor of the inaugural swing, which I'm sure he delivered with his usual panache (I really couldn't see from my perspective), but the sound of the paddle splitting was enough to thrill my teenage heart, and put a grin on my face, despite the sting at the other end, and to really put the icing on the cake, was the look of frustration on the man's face as he gazed upon his now useless paddle! -Ed QUIGLEY ('62) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Wayne MYERS ('62) Re: Tri-City Herald in the Old Days Especially for Jack GARDINER ('61) In ninth grade ('58-'59), I was the manager for the Chief Jo varsity basketball team. A sports reporter from the Herald asked me to call in immediately after every game with the box score. I did this for several games, then we played Walla Walla in Walla Walla. They killed us 22-4 (?). It was so humiliating that I didn't make the call to the paper. Somehow (I've forgotten that part), the reporter tracked me down to get the information. At the end of the season, I was shocked--the Herald sent me a check, paying me $2 for each game of the season, including that Walla Walla game. I had had no idea that a 14-year-old kid could earn money that way. -Wayne MYERS ('62) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From:Duane LEE ('63) Re: Tri-City Herald Last Friday was the kickoff of all the high school football games. Saturday's Herald contained no stories, pictures or even just scores of any games. The Sunday edition had all the stories and coverages of the Friday games. I wrote a letter to the editor complaining and was sent this reply. The McClatchy Company that owns the Herald and many other newspapers nation wide has implemented a policy moving up all their evening deadlines. They are catering to online readership and most of that occurs during the day. Their cutoff deadline is 9 PM which in reality means that nothing after 8 PM is going to make the next day's edition. The Herald's hands are tied and they do not like it either. I get my paper at 3:30 AM! The only alternative is to subscribe to their online version. It is almost as if the McClatchy Company is trying to put the newspaper out of circulation. Too bad, I enjoy reading the "real" newspaper. And what are we supposed to line the bottom of our bird cages with anyway? Re: Mr. Bernard He was so cool. Darrell RENZ ('63)nicknamed him Arabian Fabian because he had a slightly dark complexion or was just well tanned from always fishing or being outdoors and Fabian was popular at that time. He did give some spats to a few girls in our class. I had some from him and Mr. Barnard and Barnard was the champ! Both great teachers. -Duane LEE ('63) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Maren SMYTH ('63 & '64) Re: OS 10 To Do, or Not.. I use MyCompouterWorks.com to help keep my computer in tip top shape... Received this notice from them today (9/13/15): "Your iPhone or iPad had a software update... iOS 10 was released this afternoon [9/13/16]. Stop! Don't do it! Or at least wait a little while! According to numerous complaints that our techs have received, the new operating system release for iPhone and iPad is causing quite a few problems. The best advice we can give is to "wait". Let everyone else fully vet the new software before risking locking up your own devices. Apple has already issued a revision, claiming that "it should be safe to update," now. If you're one of those that absolutely must have iOS 10 today: BACK UP your device first! This has been a public service announcement from your polite, friendly, American based tech support team." -Maren SMYTH ('63 & '64) ~ Gretna, LA ~ 87° at midnight ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Shirley COLLINGS Haskins ('66) Re: Chelsea McCLAMMER ('12) ~ 9/13/16 Tri-City Herald "Benton City's Chelsea McCLAMMER (and RHS '12) will compete for her second Paralympics medal in three days Tuesday when she races in the finals of the 1,500-meter T-54 wheelchair final in Rio de Janeiro. A day after taking silver in the 400, McCLAMMER on Monday finished second in the fast heat of the premlims, with her time of 3 minutes, 22.76 seconds nearly identical to the 3:22.75 posted by fellow American Amanda McGrory. The winner of the other heat, Americans Tatyana McFadden, finished in 3:27.41. McCLAMMER is in the midst of a busy week, also competing in the 800, 5,000 and 4x400 relay." -Shirley COLLINGS Haskins ('66) ~ Richland ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Myra WEIHERMILLER ('67) Re: '67 reunion posting The 50 Year Class Reunion for the Class of '67 will be the weekend of September 15 and 16, 2017 (NEXT YEAR). I will actually make a trip to Richland to see that!! Those of us who graduated before 1975 will remember a lot of the stuff first hand, I'll bet! It will be so cool to see so much of OUR history. -Lynn-Marie HATCHER Peashka ('68) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From:Peter TURPING ('70) Re: Gene Bernard Going from Christ the King to Chief Jo for one year before heading to Col-Hi was quite an adjustment. For eight years at CK we were pretty isolated and taught mostly by nuns. While at Chief Jo Gene Bernard came to my rescue a couple of times and he made the experience easier. I got sick in the hallway one time and Mr Bernard took me to his office until my mom picked me up. He was so personable and made me feel at ease with the situation. Another time I had a teacher accuse me of not returning my text book and she was going to charge me $5 for it (big money back in the day). I went to Mr Bernard and he asked me if I had turned it in. When I told him I had he said "then let's go find it". We went to a room filled with books and we went to the shelves with the books for that class and started to go through them as they had the names of the students from the last quarter. We just hung out and went through a bunch of books until we found the one with my name in it. I thought it was pretty cool that a school counselor would do something like that for one student. I later found out that Mr. Bernard had introduced a couple who went on to marry and have a family, the oldest being my wife. I guess I owe him big time for that. On a different experience at Chief Jo I had Mr. Sauer for mechanical drawing and remember he would carry around his finely crafted paddle much of the time just waiting to dispense a hack or two just for fun. -Peter TURPING ('70) ************************************************************* ************************************************************* That's it for today.
