It met four times, on Saturdays. I missed one session due to a prior engagement. We used the paperback book Facts of Life and Love for Teenagers by Evelyn Millis Duvall. I don't recall that I learned anything from the course. I didn't learn much from the school classes either. The only thing we learned in 5th grade was that babies didn't arrive via storks, which I already knew as I had a brother en route. I learned a little in 7th grade, but not the crucial things, like how a sperm and ova got acquainted. Around ninth grade my parents gave me a book written for boys, since I never expressed any curiosity about sex. That's where most of my information came from. I learned more about sex in 7th grade PE swimming class than I did in Health, but that's another story. Patty BEZZIO ('63-RIP) and I talked about sex occasionally. She also learned from a book, written for girls. Since I didn't have any sisters and she didn't have any brothers we decided to trade books. (She made me put a book cover on mine so her mom didn't see what it was. That would have ended our relationship very quickly, she was sure.) Mine was more complete than hers. Mine explained about puberty in both males and females, hers only in females. I loaned her my copy of Facts of Life and Love to read as well. She wanted to make sure she knew everything I did. We developed a 'philosophy of sex,' although we didn't call it that. I may write more about that on her birthday next July. I taught sex education to fifth graders in Hawaii one year. That was an experience. I was part of a team of 8 teachers. The other teachers (females) wanted me to take all the boys. I refused and would only teach my homeroom class. I decided it was important for the kids to learn about the opposite sex in addition to the facts of life. For some reason, about 2/3s of 5th graders were girls, while 2/3s of fourth graders were boys. I had 4 boys and 17 girls in my homeroom. We used a fairly conservative video series from South Carolina. The kids certainly learned a lot more than I did in 5th grade, or 7th grade. I had a problem with the other teachers over the video. The kids giggled when the video showed the drawing of a nude boy. One of the teachers turned off the video and told the kids they were not to laugh or giggle or she would stop the video completely. After school that day I told her if she ever did that again I would embarrass her in front of the whole group by telling my homeroom students they could giggle all they wanted as long as they listened at the same time, and the video would NOT be turned off. I didn't have any more problems after that. -David DOUGLAS ('62) ~ Mesa, AZ ************************************************************* ************************************************************* >>From: Darlene NAPORA Shuley ('69) Re: Birthday A very special Birthday wish for Betti AVANT ('69).
