>>From: Marilyn "Em" DeVINE ('52)

The special way I got to spend my Birthday [11/7] morning:

The Trip Coordinator of Rambling Rovers (a Travel Club I'm in)
planned this bus trip to visit the old town sites of White
Bluffs and Hanford. It just happened to fall on my birthday.

My family, Dad, Mom, Sharleen ('50-RIP), Terry ('52), Richard
('57) and I ('52), lived out there about 3 miles beyond White
Bluffs from Hanford from December 6, 1943 (I know exact date
because it was Terry's 10th birthday) to June, 1944, in an old
abandoned farm house.

Some of you may not know about the government making all
residents leave when it took over the thousands of acres that
made up the "Project." It was a pretty crummy house: one
electric light, no running water, worn walls, ceilings and
floors, no bathroom, no grass, huge dead trees just outside
the screened "sun room" where Terry, Sharleen and I slept, etc.
Richard had a crib in our parents' bedroom. The barn was down
a bit of a hill from the house and on laundry day or bath day,
Terry and I would haul water up from the well (in the barn)
using our "Red Flyer" wagon. Red Flyer? I think that was
it. A gift from relatives a few years before we moved from
Ellensburg. The government built us a water barrel for drinking
water and a new Outhouse.

Because of the massive influx of families for the war effort,
the Hanford (town) High School was turned into a grade school.
We went in double shifts. We DeVines were in the morning shift,
which meant that we had all afternoon to play and explore. This
is when we became friends with Luana IVERS Portch ('52-RIP). I
didn't like our 4th grade teacher, a Mrs. King. Sharleen was in
6th grade and her teacher was so awful, she and little brother
Richard, moved back to Ellensburg for the rest of the school
year. I have incredibly wonderful memories from those 6
months!! We took our dog. The folks bought 5 chickens so we
always had fresh eggs. We also bought 2 kid goats, "Tack" and
"Lucky". They were a lot of fun. At one point, Terry and I
hitched "Tack" to the wagon and tried to get him to pull it. He
would only go backwards. So we hitched him up backwards... that
didn't work, either!

There was a small gravel pit near the house and Terry would
stand at the top and throw large rocks down to break them open,
I stood in the pit and would inspect them to see if there was
anything interesting. Not that I would have KNOWN if we found
anything truly interesting. There was a Meadowlark nest in the
field by the house. It had 4 eggs. As time went by they hatched
and grew until they were old enough to fly away. I happened to
be there at the time and was amazed to see each one fly in a
different direction.

I will try to send some photos from my iPhone.

Re: Mid-Columbia Swim/Dive Honors ~ 11/17/16 Tri-City Herald

      "The Mid-Columbia Conference on Tuesday
announced Richland's Claire SCHAEF ('18) as its
swimmer of the year and fellow Bomber junior
Alyssa WHITTINGTON ('18) as the diver of the
      year.

SCHAEF ('18) was a first-team selection in the
200- and 500-yard freestyle - events in which
she placed in the top four at last weekend's
Class 4A state meet in Federal Way.

      WHITTINGTON ('18), a first-team diver, was 22nd
      at state."
