Re: Skool dayz

How well I remember my very first day of school... Jefferson
grade school... well perhaps I should be a little more
clear... I have no memory at all of my "real" very first day
of school... I think by now it should be clear to most who
have read anything I have written over the last umpteen years
that in my early years I was not a good listener... especially
do's and don'ts... My mother always said, and I have no reason
to doubt her, that before I turned 5, she explained to me time
and again that I would not be going to school when I turned
5... Never the less, on my 5th birthday I awoke singing a
little ditty which may have been entitled "today I go to
school"... I was ready... I headed next door to Johnny REED's
('63 kinda) to walk to school... now Johnny had always
considered my mother and all growed ups to be full of baloney
to put it mildly... he didn't tell me I would be allowed
inside the school but he did convince me that going was a good
idea... We walked to school and when the bell rang, Johnny
told me to sit on the teeter tater and he would be out
later... it was a rather long wait and some bigger kids than
I came along and knocked me around a bit... finally some
nice people came along and asked where I lived... "In a pink
house" was my reply... they finally found the right house on
Haines and I waited till I was 6 to go back... As for the
really first day... no clue... musta been anticlimactic by
that time... now I had a second similar experience... in 1966
I was tapped to go to the Naval Academy... sounded good to
me... eventually, during what I recall as my last interview,
someone finally noticed I was half blind... as you can
imagine... I did not attend... ahhhhhh but guess what...
Thursday, I will have my second cataract surgery... assuming
all goes well, I will have 20/20 vision... now... If I apply
again or get an appointment... I could have myself a career in
the Navy or Marine Corps... I figure 10 months for prep school
and then 4 more years for a degree... I'll only be about 75 or
76 at graduation... ... Oh boy I'm going to Annapolis yippee
kaiyey... oh boy oh boy... Some of us just never learn... so
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Mary MASSEY ('64) on your special day, April
5, 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
